Surviving The Season (NAPSA)—If you are looking for ways to make the holidays more manageable, advice from the experts may help. Here are a few tips from bestselling cookbook author David Venable. •Decorating: It can take hours—if not days—to decorate for the holidays. To make the most of your efforts, start early—the weekend after Thanksgiving is ideal.
From food to music to decor, comfort is key when entertaining during the holidays. •Entertaining: Make entertaining easy by preparing foods in advance. Select cookware that can go from oven to table, such as the Temp-tations ® Vintage Grace Baker with Wire Rack. •Comfort: Comfort is key when having guests over for the holidays. Help your guests feel at home by finding out their favorite recipe ahead of time and surprising them with the dish. • Gifts: Fill containers with the ingredients for one of Venable’s recipes. Add a personalized gift tag and you’re good to go! •Present wrapping: First, find all your favorite holiday music. Second, mix yourself a cocktail (try Venable’s classic holiday eggnog!). Third, make sure you’ve got paper, boxes, tape and scissors. It’s easiest to tackle the wrapping by doing a little here and there when you can. Venable is the author of the best-selling cookbook “QVC’s Resident Foodie Presents: Comfort Foods That Take You Home.” Each week, he gives millions of viewers an inside look at his “kitchen” as the host of QVC’s most popular cooking show, “In the Kitchen with David®,” which airs every Wednesday at 8 p.m. (EST) and Sunday at noon (EST). To learn more, visit www.QVC. com/ITKWD.

Medical Community Takes Fresh Look At Hormone Therapy For Menopause Symptoms (NAPSA)—It’s a fact: up to 85 percent of menopausal women suffer from hot flashes. 1 While hot flashes and other symptoms are a common rite of passage in menopause, opinions on treatment with hormone therapy (HT) have been anything but universal—but that is changing. Recently, 15 top medical organizations issued a statement of agreement that HT for the treatment of menopause symptoms is acceptable and relatively safe for healthy, symptomatic, recently postmenopausal women. 2 The statement was prepared by The North American Menopause Society (NAMS), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and The Endocrine Society and jointly endorsed by 12 other leading women’s health organizations. According to its authors, the purpose of the statement was to provide reassurance in the decade-long debate about HT, which began with the publication of the controversial Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in 2002. “We believe that too many symptomatic women are missing out on the proven benefits of hormone therapy because the results of the WHI, which studied the long-term use of hormones to prevent chronic disease, were misinterpreted for women with menopausal symptoms,” Dr. Margery
Women bothered by moderate to severe menopausal symptoms should speak with their doctors about treatment. Gass, executive director for NAMS, said in a press release about the joint statement. “Women and clinicians are frustrated by the many conflicting recommendations. That’s why we initiated this effort to bring these notable medical organizations together in agreement regarding the use of hormone therapy.” Health experts encourage women who are bothered by moderate to severe menopausal symptoms to speak with their doctors about the possibility of treatment with HT. “Physicians can help patients determine, based on their own particular characteristics and history, whether or not they are good candidates for hormone therapy and what type of HT will pro-
vide them the greatest relief at the lowest risk,” Roger Lobo, MD, Past President of the ASRM said in the press release. If a woman thinks hormone therapy might be right for her, she should ask her doctor about prescription estrogens which continue to be the most effective option for relieving the discomfort of hot flashes and night sweats associated with menopause.3 The FDA recommends the lowest effective dose with any estrogen therapy for the shortest amount of time to achieve personal treatment goals.4 A physician may prescribe Divigel® (estradiol gel) 0.1%, a bioidentical,5 transdermal estrogen gel with the lowest FDA-approved dose of transdermal estradiol gel or spray (0.25 mg/day estradiol) for hot flashes.6-9 Divigel® is used to treat moderate to severe hot flashes due to menopause. Generally, women should be started at 0.25 mg/day of Divigel®. For patients who are prescribed Divigel®, saving money is easy and just a few clicks away at divigel.com. Patients can print the Patient Savings Coupon, bring it to their local pharmacy, and pay no more than $25 on their Divigel® co-pay amount. The Patient Savings Coupon is for eligible patients only and limited to a maximum savings of $25 each on 12 Divigel ® prescriptions. Offer expires on June 30, 2014.
Important Safety Information for Patients What is the most important information I should know about Divigel® (an estrogen hormone)? • Using estrogen-alone increases your chance of getting cancer of the uterus (womb). Your healthcare provider should check any unusual bleeding to find out the cause. • Do not use estrogen-alone to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes or dementia (decline of brain function) • Using estrogen-alone may increase your chances of getting strokes or blood clots • Using estrogen-alone may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women 65 years of age or older • Do not use estrogens with progestins to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes or dementia • Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chances of getting heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, or blood clots • Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women 65 years of age or older • You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with Divigel® Divigel® should not be used if you have unusual vaginal bleeding, currently have or have had certain cancers, including cancer of the breast or uterus, had a stroke or heart attack; currently have or have had blood clots, currently have or have had liver problems, have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder, are allergic to Divigel® or any of its ingredients, or think you may be pregnant. Tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical problems and the medicines you take, if you are going to have surgery or will be on bed rest, and if you are breastfeeding. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following symptoms: new breast lumps, unusual vaginal bleeding, changes in vision or speech, sudden new severe headaches, or severe pains in your chest or legs with or without shortness of breath, weakness and fatigue. New Design For Helping Kids Beat Cancer And Blood Disorders (NAPSA)—While for most young people the teen years are challenging enough, for some, there are further complications—and one such young woman turned those into a way to help others. The Problem Here’s her story: Michelle Nguyen from Johns Creek, Georgia has a rare blood disorder called thalassemia. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with thalassemia have a genetic defect of their red blood cells that affects the cells’ ability to produce normal hemoglobin. Red blood cells use hemoglobin to carry oxygen to tissues. As a result of the defect, most forms of thalassemia produce a chronic, lifelong anemia. Nguyen’s had it since she can remember and needs routine blood transfusions to maintain her strength. Every three weeks or so, she and her mother are off to the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center in Atlanta to go through a process that should never be “routine” for a 14-year-old, but like most child patients, she takes it in stride. What Nguyen really needs is a bone marrow transplant, but in order to have that procedure, she needs to find a match, which is no easy task, especially for someone of Asian descent. In spite of the efforts of such celebrities as Robin Roberts of “Good Morning America,” who have championed the cause, Asians and African-Americans are not well represented on the national bone marrow registry. There are 10.5 million potential donors on the list and only about 7 percent are Asian and another 7 percent are African-American.
Sharing Food. Bringing Hope.
This food is being distributed because The Food Bank is aware of the increased need for food in your community. All our food is given away free so there’s no cost to you or to any food pantry we partner with in our 32-county service area. Questions? Just call The Food Bank at 573-474-1020.
Michelle Nguyen and the adorable holiday duck she designed to help raise money for childhood cancer facilities. Sixty-seven percent of potential donors on the list are white. The Duck Recently, while at the cancer center for her treatments, Nguyen entered a contest to design the annual Aflac Holiday Duck for the 2013 season. Every year, the insurance company produces a plush duck and sells it online at www.Aflacholidayduck.com and at participating Macy’s stores. All the net proceeds go to the nearest participating childhood cancer facility to where it was purchased. So far, the program has raised more than $3 million of the $83 million that Aflac has come up with for childhood cancer.
Nguyen was thrilled to know that her design won the contest and so will help other kids who are going through the same types of trials that she goes through. She wants to use her newfound stardom to amplify the need for marrow donors, the need for improved childhood cancer treatments and additional research. How To Get It Nguyen’s Holiday Duck comes in both a 6- and 10-inch version and will be available through November and December. Four Easy Tips For Prevention
Marc Jaffe, M.D., Kaiser Permanente endocrinologist. ing low HDL (also known as “good” cholesterol) and/or high levels of triglycerides, being a member of certain racial and ethnic groups (e.g., Non-Hispanic Blacks, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and American Indians and Alaska Natives), and being a woman who had gestational diabetes. How Do I Prevent Diabetes? 1)Stay At A Healthy Weight. A healthy weight is one that is right for your body type and height and is based on your body mass index (BMI) and the size of your waist. Losing as little as five to 10 pounds can make a big difference in your risk of developing diabetes, and can also improve your blood pressure, cholesterol, mood and self-confidence. Maintaining your weight is also important, because the natural tendency is to gain weight as you age. So if you don’t gain weight, that’s a victory, too.
2)Exercise Regularly. Exercise 150 minutes a week. Try walking 30 minutes a day at least five days every week. It’s fine to be active in blocks of 10 minutes or more throughout your day and week. If you’re able, walk the stairs instead of taking the elevator. It’s wise to check with your physician before starting an exercise program. 3)Eat Healthy. Eat a balanced diet, including whole grains, lean sources of protein, and vegetables. Lose weight if you need to, by eating fewer calories and exercising more. For example, try having a salad instead of pizza. 4)Quit Smoking. Although tobacco does not increase the chances of diabetes, it can increase the chances of heart attack and stroke, so it is especially important to avoid tobacco if you are also at risk of developing diabetes. To learn more about diabetes, visit www.kp.org and click the health & wellness tab. Also, check out www.kp.org/carestories for videos about diabetes and other conditions. For questions and advice about a specific condition, consult with your physician. •Marc Jaffe, M.D., is a Kaiser Permanente endocrinologist and internist at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Medical Center. He also works with the organization’s Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Program, known as the PHASE program, to develop ways to improve cardiovascular health for members throughout Kaiser Permanente.
It’s Complicated: Diabetes And Your Dental Health (NAPSA)—A recent study in The Journal of the American Dental Association found that one out of five cases of total tooth loss in the United States is linked to diabetes. While complications are part of managing diabetes, for the nearly 26 million people in the U.S. living with the condition, tooth loss and other dental health problems are unlikely to be on their radar. When it comes to diabetes and dental health, research suggests that the connection actually goes both ways. On the one hand, because of lowered resistance to infection and a longer healing process, gum disease appears to be more frequent and more severe among those with diabetes. On the other hand, it appears that treating gum disease in people with diabetes can actually help people improve control over their blood sugar levels. “A dentist can be a valuable member of a diabetes health care team, along with a primary care provider and other health professionals,” said Alice G. Boghosian, DDS, and an American Dental Association (ADA) consumer adviser. The American Diabetes Association estimates that 79 million

Are You At Risk For Type 2 Diabetes? (NAPSA)—Diabetes affects more than 20 million people in the United States, and many of those who have diabetes are older adults. A study in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that baby boomers—born between 1946 and 1964—are more likely to be obese and have diabetes compared to their parents, despite significant medical advances during baby boomers’ lifetimes. The good news is older adults can take steps to prevent the more common Type 2 diabetes. “We know based on a large clinical trial, the Diabetes Prevention Program, that the best way to prevent Type 2 diabetes is through making healthy lifestyle choices,” said Marc Jaffe, M.D., Kaiser Permanente endocrinologist. “Even small changes can make a difference, and it is never too late to start making healthier choices.” Below are a few basic questions, answers and tips to help you understand and prevent diabetes. What Is Type 2 Diabetes And Why Should I Care? Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition. It prevents your body from turning food into energy. Diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputation. How Do I Know If I’m At Risk For Developing Diabetes? Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include having prediabetes, being age 45 or older, having a family history of diabetes, being overweight, not exercising regularly, having high blood pressure, hav-

People with diabetes should make sure their dentist is aware of the condition. That way, they can work together to create a personal oral care plan. people, or one in four, may have prediabetes, or blood glucose levels that are above average but not quite high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Additionally, of the nearly 26 million Americans with diabetes, about 7 million are still undiagnosed. With those figures in mind, regular health care checkups should be a priority, including dental visits that may help to identify potential signs of diabetes that appear in the mouth.
“In my practice, I’ve seen severely inflamed gums and cases of gum disease that have, together with a patient’s medical history, prompted a discussion about whether there is a potential risk of diabetes,” said Dr. Boghosian. “Oral health and overall health are connected, and as a dentist, it’s my job to flag signs of poor oral health that might also signal other serious health conditions.” People with diabetes should make sure their dentist is aware of the condition, and together, create a personal oral care plan. Also, be sure to ask your dentist how you can check for signs of gum disease at home in between dental checkups. Regardless of whether you have diabetes, practicing good oral care is essential to a healthy lifestyle. The ADA urges you to make mouth-healthy habits a priority. Be sure to: •Brush for two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste •Floss daily •Eat a healthy diet •Visit your dentist regularly.
