Rising Cases of Malware Across Business: The Facts Malware is the umbrella term used to describe any form of software designed with malicious intent. This can include viruses, password-stealing software or any other program that will cause havoc within a computer system. It is most often spread unwittingly by users.

Employees Spreading More Viruses The percentage of organizations experiencing a virus due to employees accidentally spreading malware is on the rise. One SOES survey found that 74% of organizations experienced employee-to-employee malware activity in early 2021, compared to 61% in 2020.

The ISACA 2021 State of Cybersecurity report found that more than half of all organizations would describe their cybersecurity team as understaffed, with 14% admitting to significant staffing issues and 47% stating they were somewhat understaffed.

Rise in Ransomware The use of ransomware is also rising across businesses. In 2021, Mimecast identified 61% of organizations in its State of Email Security Report that had experienced ransomware attacks leading to at least partial operational disruption, compared to 51% the previous year.
