Brumbaugh, Jim Stedke, Travis Hartman and Lance Valentine will lead a lineup of 10 name pros presenting seminars on walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass and, new this year, Muskie fishing. The popular in-depth Walleye College as well as the in-depth Bass College returns, too. Don’t leave the kids at home. For them, there will be shows with Capt. Willie, the Great Lakes Pirate; the Water Rollerz pool where kids make like floating hamsters; lot of hands-on activities at each exhibit in the Public Service Section; a special Metroparks Nature Tracks adventure; meet Mermaid Rachel; and the popular Kid’s Fishing Clinic. The iconic treat of Put-In-Bay, the Boardwalk’s famous Lobster Bisque, is sure to put show goers in a Lake Erie Islands kinda mood daily. But if that’s not enough, opening night (Thursday, January 14) will be a special party in the Put-In-Bay section of the show where the Island’s best entertainers will show up to jam for “Put-InBay Night.”

This boat show has everything!
At no time in recent memory has the Progressive Mid-America Boat Show offered boaters more than it will this year when it docks in the I-X Center for five big days, January 14-18. Ohio’s largest winter boat show will feature more than 400 boats surrounded by events and activities certain to keep show goers engaged and entertained. Indeed, visitors will have to carefully plan their day at the show if they hope to see and do everything. Boats on display will range from the plush 48-foot Cruisers Cantius to a Walker Bay sport inflatable kayak. Between those extremes show visitors will see a myriad of new designs that major boat builders are unveiling for 2016 – new models from brands like Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, Cobalt, Tiara, Starcraft, Moomba, Harris Floteboat, Pursuit, Scout, Manitou, Four Winns, SeaFox, F o r m u l a , Everglades, Catalina, Hunter, Jeanneau, and many, many more. In fact, not since the start of the Great Recession has there been more emphasis on designing new models by the boating industry. It has resulted in a bigger show this year and it’s sure will be a boat shopper’s dream! In recent years, the show has been rebranded into a mid-winter family boating experience. There’s literally something for everyone. For example, this year the DEMA Scuba Diving Pool makes its first appearance at the show. Scuba wannabes will be invited to put on the gear, plunge into the “Be A Diver” pool, and get their first scuba lesson with expert instructors from Cleveland’s Just Add Water or Aqua Action, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. There will also be a record number of boating seminars and clinics in the “College of Knowledge” with titles like: “The End of Your Rope”; “Be a Great Gilligan’; “The Apps Have it”; and “Great Cruising Destinations,” to name a few. You’ll find the best lineup of professional anglers set to share their knowledge on the Buckeye Sports Fishing Stage. Fishing tournament champions like Mark

Top talent is set for Put-In-Bay Night at the boat show It’s the Lake Erie Islands’ brand of musical talent that will take center stage when Put-InBay Night rocks the first evening of this year’s Progressive Mid-America Boat Show at the IX Center, January 14-18. The night will feature Put-In-Bay’s popular entertainers, Mike “Mad Dog” Adams, Ray

Fogg, and Westside Steve. And, if the music isn’t enough island atmosphere for you, you can complete it when you sip a cup of the Boardwalk’s iconic Lobster Bisque. It’s become a boat show tradition. Each day, kettles of freshly made Lobster Bisque are brought in from the Boardwalk. It sells out every night. This year, the Boardwalk will be donating 50 cents for each cup sold to the Lake Erie Improvement Association, directly supporting the organization’s mission to improve the quality of Lake Erie’s waters. “Mad Dog” Adams’ unique style has put him on stage with such legendary artists as Johnny Cash, Alabama, Loretta Lynn, Starship and Charlie Daniels, among many others. He’s also appeared on the Nashville Network, Comedy Central, Nightshift, Sunday Funnies and local radio/TV stations across the country. Put-In-Bay favorites Ray Fogg and Westside Steve will be joining “Mad Dog” at the party. Fogg records for Sweetwater Records and has entertained thousands over 20 years at “The Bay”. He presides over the official opening and closing of the season in the island’s famous Round House Bar.

Westside Steve has been dubbed the PutIn-Bay Ambassador because of his many TV appearances promoting the Island. During the spring and fall, Steve is on another island, Key West, Florida. But he’s always promoting Put-In-Bay there, too. In Key West, he’s a regular at the popular Rick’s Bar, while during the summer he’s making music at the Crescent’s Patio Bar. Beware of “Party Crashers!” There’s no way of knowing in advance, but “party crashers” have been known to show up unannounced on Put-In-Bay Night. Last year, it ended up being a winter reunion as the likes of Pat Dailey and Alex Bevin, the biggest names in the logbook of the Island’s entertainment, showed up to join party. Features and attractions engage kids at the show Education, hands-on activities and entertainment will keep the youngsters engaged at this year’s Progressive Mid-America Boat Show. “We want kids to look forward to a good time at the show,” says show manager Ken Alvey, “so we take care to build in activities just for them. After all, boating is America’s number one family sport. The kids are just as important as their parents,” he adds. Here are some highlights: Capt. Willie! It’s called “edu-tainment” because it combines facts about the lakes and water safety with musical entertainment and stories that gets the kids literally parading around as wannabe pirates. Shiver me timbers, even adults are often seen jumping
into the fun. When the kids hear “Arrrrrgh,” they’ll know it’s the start of another Capt. Willie stage show. His stage schedule is: FRIDAY at 4:30pm and 6:30pm; SATURDAY at 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 5:30pm and 7:30pm; SUNDAY 2:00pm and 4:00pm; and MONDAY all pirates rally in West Lobby at 1:15pm for Pirate Parade. Local tournament anglers Travis Hartman, Dan Gies, Randy Eyre and Matt Davis will conduct the Future Anglers Foundation “Kids Fishing Clinic” on Sunday (1/17) at 1:00 PM for youngsters up to 16 years old. Their goal is to create excitement in kids for fishing. They keep the kids engaged with games and prizes that also help develop skills. Sailing your way around the boat show Catalina, Hunter and Jeanneau are name brands that will drop anchor at the 2016 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show. A pair of Catalina Yachts will be displayed at the show by Freeman-Eckley, Vermilion. An all-star lineup of fishing experts is set to take the “Fish School” stage, sponsored by Buckeye Sports Center, at the 2016 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show, January 14-18 in the I-X Center. “Surveys show nearly 70 percent of all boats are used for fishing at least part of the time,” says Ken Alvey, boat show manager. “So, it’s no surprise our ‘Fish School’ is one of the most popular sections of the show, and this year’s featured speakers are the best we’ve ever had.” From walleye to bass fishing, “Fish School” has it covered, including the special “Kid’s Fishing Clinic” for youngsters up to 16 years old. While there are pros on stage nearly all the time, three special fishing events are slated for
this year. First, a special Bass College is set for Saturday (Jan. 16) from 11:30am to 2:30pm. It features bass tournament winner, Jared Rhode, among other bass pros. Second, the ever-popular Cisco Fishing Systems Walleye College is back, this year conducted by tournament champions Mark Brumbaugh, Travis Hartman, Jim Stedke and Dan Gies. It will also be held on Saturday (Jan. 16) from 3:00pm to 6:00pm and it will be full house again. Finally, last year’s Future AnglerFoundation’s Kids Fishing Clinic” was so successful, it will be held again on Sunday (Jan.17) at 1:00pm. Suit up and Be a Diver at the show’s DEMA Pool “Let’s get wet” will likely be heard throughout this year’s 2016 Progressive Mid-America Boats Show but it won’t have anything to do with the gleaming new boats on display. The Diving Equipment & Marketing Association (DEMA) will bring its “Be A Diver” pool to the show for the first time. And, while the snow may be blowing outside the I-X Center, show goers who want to sample scuba diving will be able to don wetsuits and literally head for the bottom. The DEMA 30-foot, 15,000 gallon mobile pool tour is being sponsored by the Cayman Islands which are noted for their crystal clear waters offering superb scuba and snorkeling. The special DEMA exhibit is complete with all the newest diving equipment including wetsuits, fins, air compressor and more. “Be A Diver” will be manned by professional instructors from area dive shops and schools. Show visitors wanting to get a free scuba lesson should bring a swim suit and towel. Ages 10 to 15 will be required to have an adult in the pool with them. Teens 16 and up must be accompanied by an adult who is not required to be in the pool. DEMA is a 1,300-member international organization dedicated to the promotion and growth of the recreational scuba diving and snorkeling industry through consumer awareness programs and media campaigns. Since 2000 the DEMA pool has crisscrossed the nation encouraging thousands of new scuba enthusiasts. Smile, you’re on camera! Another unique feature of the DEMA pool is a remote controlled submarine. You say your friends will doubt you were scuba diving in Cleveland? You’ll simply show them the picture the sub will take after it maneuvers into position to record your dive. For those who have never tried scuba and are unsure whether they would want to learn more, the “Be A Diver” pool attraction is a great way to “get your feet wet.” The boat show runs for 5 days in the I-X Center, January 14-18, and will feature more than 400 boats. This year, dealer are set to display more new models and designs, and increasing sizes. The boats will range from kayaks to motor yachts. Show goers who want to sample scuba diving will be able to don wetsuits and try scuba diving.
Cleveland Metroparks’ interactive Nature Tracks featured at show Visitors stepping into a special Nature Tracks from the Cleveland Metroparks will be surrounded by interactive exhibits depicting a temperate forest habitat at the 2016 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show. The display will immediately immerse participants in nature. Particularly aimed at kids, SMARTboard and touch screen technology will abound to teach environmental lessons. Mounted native animal species and laboratory experiments will provide hands-on experiences that will connect youngsters to nature. But the special exhibit doesn’t stop there. There will be a small critter display and water samples. Visitors can watch and learn about the Watershed Stewardship Center’s conservation efforts. In addition, the Metropark’s elCee2 Water
Taxi will be on display and show goers can climb aboard to check it out and meet Captain Mike Bobincheck. It’s a good family photo op! And, speaking of photo ops, visitors will also be able to pose inside a 6-foot-plus Leafman and share the photo with family and friends on social media using #lifesizeleafman. An “on-water” kayak simulator will round

out the wide-ranging Metroparks exhibit. The kayak will be “floating” on tubes and kids can sit in it and fell like they’re on the water. New boats abound around this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show The sheer number of new models visitors will see at the 2016 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show will leave no doubt boating is back from the great recession! From kayaks to motor yachts, pontoons to ski boats, the show will be loaded with new boats getting their first showing in the Ohio market. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The steady increase in boat sales over the last couple of years has resulted in boat builders investing heavily in new designs and models,â&#x20AC;? explains show manager Ken Alvey. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No builder wants to be left behind these days.â&#x20AC;? It begins with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Queen of the Fleet,â&#x20AC;? the new Cruisers 48 Cantius Motor Yacht being shown by Skipper Budâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (see page 30). But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only one of many that will star in the I-X Center. The new Tiara 39 Coupe and the Four Winns 350 Horizon Big Bow Rider will also be ready for boarding. Even the most traditional brands are thinking new. For example, Clemons Boats will show off Boston Whalerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new 320 Vantage (above right) with joy stick control. It's a big dual console model in keeping with the trend toward more versatile boats as opposed to pure center consoles. It has an overnight area tucked under the console. Among the other boats from 23 feet up that Clemons will be showing will be the Cobalt 336, a new big bow rider design with a variety of amenities, like sleeping quarters under the helm.
MarineMax, the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest boat dealer, will headline the new Sea Ray Sundancer 40 Sport Yacht. It will be accompanied by the Sundancer 37â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and 35â&#x20AC;&#x2122; models. In addition, the new Sailfish 32â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Dual Console will lead three other Sailfish models, a 27â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Dual Console along with 29â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and 27â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Center Consoles, among the dozen boats from 19â&#x20AC;&#x2122; to 40â&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the display. The dramatic blackhull of a new Regal 42 Sport Coupe (left) with twin IPS will top the South Shore Marine display, but it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t end there. Hot off the new designs line will be the striking Pursuit OS355 Express that will be shown alongside another new model, the Pursuitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s C238 Center Console. New Scouts, including the exciting 320 LXF Center Console, and Grady Whites will also be shown. For those who lean toward the more traditional look, Riverfront Yacht

And speaking of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s designs, the lineup of seven Formula Boats (left) ranging from 24 to 37 feet will be on display by Marine Tech Concepts. They will include bowriders, performance cruisers and crossover models. While the bigger boats often get all the publicity, new designs at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boat show will be found in every size and style category. Take pontoons, for example â&#x20AC;&#x201C; theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the industryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top selling category and the show will reflect it. Celebrate the 10-year anniversary and statewide expansion of the Ohio Clean Marinas Program at the boat show
A decade of boating stewardship will be recognized by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) in partnership with the Ohio Sea Grant College Program and Lake Erie Marine Trades Association (LEMTA) at the annual Progressive Mid-American Boat Show being held in at the I-X Center in Cleveland January 14-18. A ceremony will be held Thursday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. on the Lake Erie University stage/Anglers’ Alley stage to recognize marinas for their commitment to protecting and enhancing our freshwater resources. The eight marinas (listed here) who have achieved Certified Ohio Clean Marina status for 10-years or longer and newly certified/received marinas will be recognized during the ceremony that acknowledges successes and looks forward at opportunities to reach additional marinas and boaters. Those opportunities hinge on the August 2015 expansion of both the Ohio Clean Marinas and Ohio Clean Boater programs statewide to include the Ohio River Watershed. The Ohio Clean Marinas and Ohio Clean Boater programs began in 2004 with the help of many partners including the ODNR Office of Coastal Management, Ohio Sea Grant and LEMTA. At that time, the programs focused solely on Lake Erie, with the first marina certifications occurring in 2005. In August 2015, an expanded partnership with the ODNR Division of Watercraft generated the staff and resources to offer the voluntary best management practices certification program to all marinas in Ohio. Today, more than 45 marinas in the Lake Erie Watershed are certified as Ohio Clean Marinas, and an additional 35 have committed to meet the program’s certification standards. In fall 2015, Lake Logan Marine was the first Ohio River Watershed marina to achieve program certification, while others have also pledged to meet program goals. From educating marina owners on how to implement environmental best management practices, to encouraging boaters to take action to protecting our shared water
resources, to implementing programs to keeping boat shrink wrap out of landfills to date, the Ohio Clean Marinas and Ohio Clean Boater programs have created a culture of responsible boaters and marina businesses along our Great Lake and throughout the Buckeye state. The Lake Erie Marine Trades Association has named Bryan Ralston to the newly created position of Director of Sales and Marketing. The announcement was made by John Clemons, chairman of the associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board of Trustees. â&#x20AC;&#x153;LEMTA is clearly going into a growth mode now,â&#x20AC;? said Clemons, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and we are excited that Bryan is aboard to be a major contributor to our future, and that of the Ohio boating industry.â&#x20AC;? In his new post, Ralston will be responsible for the development and marketing of LEMTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 4 current annual boat shows in Ohio and Indiana. They include the Cleveland MidAmerica Boat Show, Catawba Island Spring Boat Show, the DEMO In-Water Boat Show at Cedar Point, and the Michigan City (IN) In-
Water Boat Show on Lake Michigan. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also direct the expansion of association services and marketing programs for LEMTAmember companies. Ralston spent 13 years with the Cleveland Cavaliers Operating Company, developing marketing and sales programs for the Cavs, the Lake Erie Monsters, Cleveland Gladiators, the Canton Charge and the Quicken Loans Arena. His experience also includes sales of digital and print advertising with the Northeast Ohio Media Group for The Plain Dealer, Sun News and Cleveland.com. He is a graduate of Ashland University with a Degree in Public Communications and Business Management. He, his wife Nicole, and their daughter Olivia reside in Westlake.

There is a heavyweight player joining the ranks of the Great Lakes marina industry. Take care of your boat trailer By Capt. Fred Davis Most boat owners work fervently on their boats to keep them in like-new condition. They wash and wax them, touch up any chips in the gel coat, polish the chrome. The boats motor always gets a good going over to ensure smooth operation. The boat’s trailer, responsible to carry the pride and joy, often goes untouched. Many trailer problems go undetected until there is a failure and 99% of trailer failures occur on the road. There is nothing capable of ruining a trailer boater’s trip more then a breakdown along the highway. Wheel bearings are usually the most common failure. They can be repaired or easily replaced at home or at a local marina or trailer service center but when you break down on the highway trying to make repairs can be a nightmare. A wheel bearing failure can cause a spindle to heat up and even twist off and this in turn can cause extensive damage to the entire rig. You cannot tell if the bearings are bad just by looking at the wheel. If you have a tandem trailer, take a wedge 5 to 6 inches high, place it in front of one wheel and pull forward. This action will lift one wheel enough to allow you to spin the other freely. If you hear a growl while spinning, you need to pull the wheel off and take the bearings out. If you don’t hear a noise, grab the wheel and try to rock it on the shaft by pushing on one side and pulling on the other. If you have play in the

On a single axle you will have to jack the trailer up, and then proceed to check in the same manner. Bearings are not expensive and can be replaced without special tools. The replacement may take a little time and you may get your hands greasy but the time spent doing the job could save you from a very costly experience. I once noted a trailer being pulled to the ramp area to retrieve a boat. I heard the telltale growl so I walked over and told the owner. He answered, “It’s been that way for years but I only go 17 miles and the bearings won’t heat up in that short distance.” About 2 hours later I happened to be driving down the same highway route the man with the trailer had taken. Sure enough, there he was on the side of the road. The wheel had snapped off and the trailer dropped. The engine propeller and lower unit had been dragged on the pavement and were
severely damaged. I did not stop to check but would not be surprised to learn the boat had been damaged also. Note: Trailers equipped with bearing savers on axles should also be checked once a year. My suggestion is before each boating season you spend a day going over your trailer. Start at the hitch tongue and work back. Check the coupler latch mechanism; make sure it works freely yet snaps securely on the ball. Check your chains for wear from dragging and for proper length. Be certain the ball is secure on the hitch. Check the tongue swivel jack or trailer tongue jack, it must work freely and be properly lubricated. If you have a swivel jack with a wheel, check the wheel for wear in the center pin area. Move on to the winch. Make sure the latch spring is good and the gear runs freely. Lubricate the gears and crank. Pull the winch cable, rope or strap out and inspect it. If you have cable and
locate a frayed area, cut it off and re-secure the hook or replace the cable. A little fray is still a weakness. Do not ignore it because when cable breaks under strain it can give anyone nearby some nasty cuts. A replacement cable can be purchased for about $ 20.00 with a new hook attached. If you have rope on your winch, it may also show frayed areas and if so you should replace it. Ropes wear faster than cable and need replacement frequently but the cost is only about $ 12.00 to $ 15.00. The same damage can occur when a rope winch lets go under load. If your winch is equipped with a strap you need to be aware the strap material weakens when stored taunt, especially in the sun. My strap on my Florida rig, which was only four years old, was showing a very slight wear on the edge. It was not even separated, just looked like there was a rub mark on it. When I tried winching the boat up the trailer, the strap just snapped. It almost appeared as if it were cut. Although I like the strap best for winching because it does not tangle or wrap under itself, I now realize it must be replaced every couple years. Check to see that your rig is equipped with a safety chain running from the winch to the bow eye. This is a safety requirement by law in many states. I am sure glad I had one when my strap broke or I may have lost my boat on the ramp and done a great deal of damage. The next things to check are the wheels and springs and this would be the time to do maintenance on your wheel bearings. Bends or cracks in the spring leafs should be examined. Springs take a real beating especially on rough roads.

Since there are no shocks on most boat trailers, the springs take all the shock. Look at your fenders to see that they are well secured. See if there are any bends in the center of the fender. If this goes unnoticed, the result can be severe tire wear or even a blow out. These bends are usually caused by using the fender for a step when climbing in and out of the boat while it is on the trailer and is most common on tandem wheel fenders. You need to check any guides, rollers or pads you can get at. After launching your boat it is easier to make these inspections. If you find cracked or broken rollers, you should replace them as soon as possible. If they should break off during loading or while traveling over the road, extensive damage can be done to your boats hull. The same applies to bunk trailers so be sure to check the bunk supports and replace any bent or rusted brackets. Check the stern hold-downs. There are many types; some are made with chain others with strapping. Both are good but make sure they are snug. Stern hold-downs keep the boat from bouncing on the trailer which has been known to crack and chip boat bottoms. These stern tie-downs are required in nearly every state and many states are very watchful for offenders. Proper wiring and lights are also required by law. You can be driven crazy trying to locate problems with them. I have found if you have light problems beyond bulb replacement, the first place to look is for the ground. If you must replace the tail and brake lights or any other lights that will be underwater when launching or pulling, use waterproof fixtures and make watertight electrical connections. You can probably find a few more things to check like the obvious, tires and brakes. Once again, it is wise to be aware of the law regarding trailers in states you plan to travel. Recently many states have changed laws making it a requirement that trailers have brakes on all wheels. If you have two axles, you must have brakes on both. After completing your inspection and making any necessary repairs, you can be confident your trailer is in good condition and go down the highway worry free.

When Diamonds learns that Moore’s memory is missing, he convinces Moore that he’s Manny Elias, one of organized crime’s top hitmen. Moore/Elias is whisked to the backwaters of Cedar Key, Florida by Mafioso Fat Freddy Fabrizio to be “retrained” in the art of killing. Moore/Elias later surfaces in Ohio where Diamonds uses him to take revenge on former criminal associates in Detroit, Columbus, Cleveland and Chagrin Falls. Completing one deadly assignment after another, Moore/Elias is unable to reveal his identity to a beautiful woman he befriends near his Wooster hideout. A confrontation with rival hitman Santoro leads to the eventual death of one person who holds the key to Elias’ true identity. The novel is fast-moving and actionpacked. It shows emotional turmoil as Moore/Elias struggles with the trauma of his memory loss and an inherent ethical dilemma with cold-blooded murder. The storyline is further complicated when two of Moore’s ex-SEAL buddies, Mike “Mad Dog” Adams and Sam Duncan, find themselves in the crosshairs of Moore’s weapon and Moore/Elias is ordered to kill them in what is another exciting showdown and satisfying
finish to a complex series of twists and turns. Recognition Adamov was the featured author at the 2006 Ernest Hemingway Literary Festival in Key West. At my ripe old age of 32 I am realizing more and more how frequently life typically comes full circle. What we once needed becomes something we used to dream about. Then once we obtain our desired position our need changes and it brings us back around to explore new options. Let me explain: my parents have a large home that was once filled with my brother’s and my friends all through childhood, high school and even on our many visits home while in college. Then, we both moved out and their large home felt quite empty with just the two of them. Now my brother and I both have two children so when we visit them at the same time, their house is filled again with love and laughter. I have also witnessed my parent’s journey in deciding what boat is the perfect fit for their needs. When my brother and I were both small children they had a cruiser style with a safe cabin. Then as we got older and were into water sports they got a center console with ample seating. As we grew older and were away at college my parents got a nicer, larger cabin cruiser so they could take trips comfortably. Once they purchased their Florida home they bought a 26’ center console as well and quickly determined two boats was too much work and financially too much with winterizing, transporting both, storage etc. So, they finally settled on having their “dream boat” built: a larger cruiser so they can safely take day/weekend trips both on Lake Erie and the Gulf, while in Florida. Of course, they had to make sure their boat would safely carry their children and grandchildren. The point is to realize when you are shopping for the ideal boat that, in time, your needs and wants may change so shop wisely! What you may deem your dream boat now may change, and that is ok! Like a new season, our lives shift and oftentimes unexpectedly. So while you are bouncing around the boat shows, meeting with dealers and marinas, boat builders and such keep an open mind and enjoy the process. For those of you whom are fortunate enough to be considering a boat purchase this winter, try to really enjoy the information gathering stage, the price comparisons and envisioning your life with each particular boat playing a relaxing part of it. The tides may change and the winds may shift, but as long as you are with the ones you love enjoying your passion for boating, all will be calm and enjoyable. I have heard people say “who is inside your home is what really matters”, the same holds true for boating. Enjoy the boat shows and anticipation for an early Spring! Create those memories!

And boat show goer’s this year will be able to admire a completely restored Arabian owned by Mike and Jane Matusick of Hermitage, Pa. The Matusicks found the boat 10 years ago in Oconomowoc, WI. By Jack Lynett It is always hard to verify rumors these days, but can you imagine how to prove a rumor of the 1950s? That being said, rumors in the early 1950s in the boating industry, were to the effect that Chris-Craft dealers reported losing sales to Lyman and Century because no Chris-Craft boats were made with the lapstrake hulls that ran well in rough water and shallow great lakes. The smooth carvel planking method used by Chris Smith for over 30 years was facing competition from smaller companies. Although prototypes were built in Algonac and Cadillac Michigan, a new factory was opened in
Salisbury, Maryland. The original 18-foot built in 1954 promised 30 miles per hour with the 95 horse engine. A 60 horse, 4-cylinder was also available. The 22-footer, also produced in 1954, was advertised to provide a “soft ride” due to the rugged round-bilge design and lapstrake con-
struction. By mid-year 1956, orders far eclipsed the production capabilities of the new factory. Chris-Craft, relying on the knowledge it gained from making plywood landing craft during WWII, utilized resorcinol, an underwater glue developed for the Navy, to bond the 3/8 inch plywood. Later, Chris-Craft developed its own glue called “Sea Skiff Sealer.” This special synthetic sealant was applied to planks and joints. Once applied and drawn tight, the wood was secured with brass screws and copper nails and the compound penetrated the wood. In some tests, the wood shattered under 150 pounds of direct pressure while the joint or seam held up. In 1957, Chris added a 22-footer with a large cabin and V berths and called it a “Ranger.” A 40- foot with lots of mahogany and varnished areas was also added to the available boats. In 1959, ChrisCraft had dominated the market to the point that Lyman was forced to begin adding berths to their boats in order to gain some market competition. Too late for Lyman though – the market had been captured by Chris-Craft. In the years to come, Chris turned to interiors and within less than 8 years, moved to the lead in the field, By 1966, Chris was beginning to pay attention to fiberglass hulls. The 18- and 20-foot Sea Skiffs showed up with fiberglass hulls, and the production was moved over to other locations and called “Corinthian.” In the 60 or so year since the Sea Skiff was
perfected and produced by Chris-Craft, they still remain a boat that is sought after. Even Chris Smith, grandson of the founder, who worked in the business, owns and continues to use to this day a 1957 Sea Skiff christened “Smith Skiff” (above). I recently acquired a 1956 Sea Skiff and am working on the restoration process. As seen in the photograph (upper left), there’s a long way to go. The hull card (left) obtained from the Mariners Museum shows the boat built in 1955 and sent to Columbus, Ohio on the dealer’s truck. It came with seat cushions, convertible top and toilet. Yes – in 1956 such toilets were permitted to discharge straight into the lake. But it has been removed and now complies with the law. The Sea Skiff represents one of the success stories of the antique and classic boat era. The plywood, the construction, the cruising comfort of the round bilge, and the ability to withstand wind and weather will keep the Sea Skiff in demand for years to come.
