There will also be a wide range of fishing, water skiing, wake boarding and pontoon boats on display by the largest group of dealers in the show in years. A few examples include: Buckeye Sports Center (Lund, Monterey, Harris, Mooba); Boat Masters Marine (Bennington, Chaparral, Robolo, Alumacraft); Vic’s Sports (Ranger, Starcraft); Parma Marine (Alumacraft); Portage Lakes (PolarKraft, Regal); to name some. Education is also big at the show. The “Lake Erie University” seminars run from using smartphone apps to cooking on board, all hosted by Sam Insalaco and Mark Gagyi along with corps of speakers daily. Meanwhile, over on the “Anglers Alley” side, names like Jim Stedke, Mark Brumbaugh, Randy Eyre and more will talk fishing topics from walleye to bass.

Willie Pirate Show; the Water Rollerz pool; and other hands-on activities at each exhibit in the Public Service group. Monday is the Martin Luther King Holiday and it’s also designated Lake Erie Day where $1 from each ticket sold will go to Stone Lab at Put-In-Bay, a part of Ohio’s Sea Grant program. Sea Grant will have its hands-on educational exhibit at the show again this year. A bigger boat show anchors in Cleveland

An all-new “Boating Experience” Pavilion, more boats, more special events and more entertainment will draw an estimated 40,000-plus visitors to Ohio’s largest boating exposition, the 2017 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show in Cleveland’s I-X Center, January 12-16. A fleet of more than 450 boats will be surrounded by events and activities that make the show what it’s intended to be – an escape from mid-winter to a boating rendezvous that will keep show goers engaged and entertained. Besides the boats, nearly everything boaters could want to learn about -- marinas, insurance, clothing, sailing gear, waterfront properties and much more – will be on display, too. Speaking of learning, the first-ever “Boating Experience Pavilion” (BEP) promises to be a very popular addition to the show. It will be a special area for boaters and wannabes to talk with other boaters about everything boating! Designed to engage adults and children, it covers a wide range of opportunities to learn everything from how to get started in boating to where to boat. The new “BEP” is a special center for a variety of exhibits and activities with something for all ages! Take the helm on the power boat simulator of the U.S. Power Squadrons; climb onto the kayaks and rowing scull in the Cleveland Metroparks area; learn how to cast fishing lines from a runabout, pontoon boat or sailboat; try to properly tie-off or place spring lines; kids will build their own model boat; all while watching the popular Capt. Willie’s Pirate Show, and much more. But it’s the stars of the show that draw the boating faithful and this year’s fleet at 450 is the largest in many years topped by the “Queen of the Fleet”, the French-built 45-foot Prestige Flybridge Motor Yacht displayed by Sima Marine. But, boats in the show will range down to the size of an inflatable yacht tender or a kayak. Virtually every major boat brand will be included as dealers from throughout Ohio showcase their newest models. For example,

The show puts you face-to-face with new models big and small It won’t matter which aisles visitors cruise down at the 2017 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show, they’re guaranteed to come face-to-face with a myriad of new models being displayed for the first time. According to show manager Bryan Ralston, “Our dealers have increased the size of this year’s show to present more boats and, especially, more new models than in recent years. It’s the result of steady boat sales increases in Ohio and nationwide and the competition among boat builders to come out with new designs is pretty intense.” From inflatables to motor yachts, pontoons to ski boats, first showings in the Ohio market will abound, topped by the “Queen of the Fleet,” the big Prestige 450 Motor Yacht displayed by Sima Marine. But that’s just one of the stars on display at the I-X Center for 5 days, January 12-16. The large multi-brand exhibitors are coming loaded this year. Clemons Boats (Sandusky), for

Pontoon boats have been the boating industry’s top sellers for 3 years running and the boat show will be flush with them. Charles Mill Marine has one of the largest displays of pontoons from Starcraft, Quest and Sunchaser, while Ravenna Marine will feature Manitou Pontoons from 18-23 feet alongside their conventional-hulled Glastron and Crestliner models. Performance pontoons and Tritoons are hot sellers, too. Apex Pontoons and Harris Flotebote will be featured in the Buckeye Sports Center exhibit, while South Bay Tritoons will be shown by Castaway Yacht Sales and G3 and Sun Catcher Tritoons from Huron Lagoons Marina (Huron) will join still other brands. Put-In-Bay Night opens the show with the spirit of “The Bay” It will be a cup of the Boardwalk’s iconic Lobster Bisque and some Lake Erie Islands trademark musical talent that will rock the opening night (Thursday) of the Progressive Mid-America Boat Show at the I-X Center. Music makers Ray Fogg and Westside Steve Simmons will headline the evening and fill the Put-In-Bay section of the show with songs and banter that make them among the most popular entertainers enjoyed by thousands of boaters who head for the island each summer. Another boat show tradition is the kettles of freshly made Lobster Bisque brought in daily from the Boardwalk. Literally hundreds of cups sell out every night of the boat show. Ray Fogg records for Sweetwater Records and has entertained crowds at “The Bay” for over 20 years. He presides over the official opening and closing of the season in the island’s famous Round House Bar which was originally built in Toledo, disassembled, taken to “The Bay” and reassembled. Westside Steve has been dubbed the “PutIn-Bay Ambassador” because of his many TV appearances in which he never fails to promote the Island. During the spring and fall, Steve is usually on another island, Key West, Florida. But he’s always promoting Put-In-Bay there, too. In Key West, he’s a regular at the popular Rick’s Bar, while during the summer he’s making music at the Crescent’s Patio Bar. Watch out for the party crashers! While no one knows in advance, other popular entertainers have been known to drop in unannounced and offer some songs. Last year, Alex Bevin, guitar in hand, joined the winter

reunion on stage. When all that musical talent starts rockin’ the house, it always seems like no one wants to go home! The Put-In-Bay section of the boat show, which also features other displays from the Island, will definitely be where visitors will be singing along and reminiscing about summer days spent on the crown jewel of the Lake Erie Islands.

From kayaks to motor yachts, pontoons to ski boats, the 2017 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show will also be loaded with new fishing boats, many getting their first showing in the Ohio market. While the bigger boats always garner publicity, new designs at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show will be found in every size category. And, since fishing is so popular in Ohio waters, new fishing models at the show are bound to get lots of attention. The Cleveland Metroparks turns 100 this year and the centennial celebration will kick off at this year’s Progressive Mid-America Boat Show with a large interactive exhibit featuring something for everyone. More than just a display, it will offer a variety of “experiences” for show visitors. For example, the Metropark’s “elCee2” Water Taxi will be center stage and open for boarding. Kids will be invited to "fish" for magnetic fish off the “elCee2” and win small Metroparks trinkets and prizes. But there’s a lot more. The exhibit will include a sail boat and related information to introduce a new Metroparks Sailing Program. And, the Metroparks Argo Amphibious Off-road Vehicle used by the aquatic biologists will be on display, too. Special presentations by Michael Durkalec, M.S., Metroparks Aquatic Biologist, will feature two discussions for show visitors: "Steelhead Fishing Opportunities in Cleveland Metroparks"

and an “Overview of the Cleveland Metroparks Fisheries Program." Cooking will also be included in the display for the first time Metroparks will be offering 2 cooking demos titled: "Lakefront Eats with Cleveland Metroparks". These cooking demonstrations will highlight dishes from the various lakefront restaurants in the Metroparks. The cooking demonstrations will be Saturday and Sunday only at 2 and 4 pm. Complete information on marinas and all aquatics programs offered, as well as information about where and how to come out a play in the Metroparks System will be available. Moreover, interested visitors who would like to work in the Metroparks will have a chance to receive information and discuss open positions like Water Taxi First Mates and Seasonal Marina employees.

Fishing models from Robalo and Alumacraft will also be ready for boarding in the Boat Masters Marine exhibit. Boat Masters, which will also be showing Chaparrals, Benningtons and Hurricanes, will be calling attention to their newest satellite sales center and ships store that has opened in Lake Milton. They’ve also completed a new 78-slip marina on Portage Lakes and a 10,000 sq. ft. addition to their service and storage facilities at the main Akron location. More fishing models will be found at Burroughs Marine showing a group of six Starcrafts topped by the 196 Fishmaster model, while Beaver Park Marina will display a variety of Sea Fox center consoles. No name is bigger in center consoles than

Regulator, and Catawba Moorings will be premiering the all-new Regulator 31CC alongside other Regulators, as well as a group of Key West fishing machines. Similarly, Parma Marine will show off a series of Alumacraft Boats, while Vic’s Sport Center will be displaying Ranger, Starcraft and Starweld models. Other fishing models will be found in the exhibits of MarineMax showing Sailfish, and Portage Lakes Marine displaying Polar Kraft boats. MarineMax also features Sea Ray and Azimut yachts, while Portage Lakes will display a series of Regal Boats, too. The boat show features daily fishing seminars by tournament-winning pros. These sessions cover subjects from Walleye to Bass.

Is the Boat Show for kids? If kids like the wacky antics of a Great Lakes pirate or participating in a variety of handson activities, they won’t be disappointed at this year’s Progressive Mid-America Boat Show in the I-X Center, January 12-16. “Kids are a big reason we own our boats,” says show manager Bryan Ralston, “and boating is America’s number one family sport. We want them to expect a good time at the show so we take care to build in activities just for them.” Here are some highlights: All-New Kids Casting Fun! New this year in an expanded kids zone will be a kids casting demo area where they’ll get to cast at targets. Conducted by local fly-fishing expert, Craig Wood, in addition to the casting challenges, Wood will also conduct workshops on fly fishing and steelhead fishing basics for kids. Oh, yes, and adults can sit in, too!

The Capt. Willie Show! It’s a unique combination of education and entertainment – call it “edu-tainment” -- combining real facts about the lakes and water safety with music, stories and the zany personality of Capt. Willie, the Great Lakes Pirate. “Shiver me timbers,” before each show is over, he’ll have the kids literally parading around as wannabe pirates. Why even adults are often seen jumping into the fun. When the kids hear “Arrrrrgh,” they’ll know it’s the start of another Capt. Willie stage show. His schedule is: FRIDAY at 4:30pm and 6:30pm; SATURDAY at 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 5:30pm and 7:30pm; SUNDAY 2:00pm and 4:00pm; and MONDAY all pirates rally in West Lobby at 1:15pm for a special Pirate Parade. “Get wet” could easily be a theme of this year’s Progressive Mid-America Boat Show, but it won’t have anything to do with the more than 450 sparkling new boats on display at Ohio’s oldest and largest boating exposition. The “Go Dive Now” touring pool that was brought to the show for the first time last year will be back again. “We under estimated how popular the ‘Go Dive Now’ touring pool would be last year,” explained Bryan Ralston, show manager, “so it’s a no-brainer to bring it back for another year.”

The special pool and exhibit comes from Diving Equipment & Marketing Association (DEMA). While snow may be blowing around outside the I-X Center, show attendees who have always wanted to try scuba diving are invited to don wetsuits and all the gear and literally head under water with a certified instructor coach. The DEMA 30-foot, 15,000 gallon pool and exhibit is complete with all the newest diving equipment including wetsuits, fins, air compressor and more. “Go Dive Now” will be

manned by professional instructors from area dive shops and schools. Show visitors wanting to get the free scuba lesson should bring a swim suit and towel. DEMA is a 1,300-member international organization dedicated to the promotion and growth of the recreational scuba diving and

snorkeling industry through consumer awareness programs and media campaigns. Winter steelheading: By Richard Martin Steelhead trout fishing was generally good last winter whenever the rivers weren't flooded, and they're likely to be as good or better this winter assuming decent weather. These big fish are vicious fighters and high leapers, and many will stay in those tributaries until early spring, which makes them the best game in town over winter months. There's little question that more boating anglers would like to try for these up to 20 pound fish, but don't because likely their craft have already been put away for the winter, and wading or small boat fishing for them would call for complicated gear and even more complicated techniques. But it isn't true, and a fisherman I met on the Vermillion River one day knew that well. He started seeking these cold water lunkers just last fall for the first time, and fell in love with the sport. This near amateur fishes mainly in the Vermillion River around the Mill Hollow area which is much closer to where he lives than the east of Cleveland tributaries, and he's already had some success. He fishes spawn sacs when he can get them, but is coming more and more to like live bait.

Live bait can work, too!

The man does his fishing with floats and a 9 foot Medium-light action rod with a medium sized spinning reel that has a good drag. On lines end is a small No.10 or 12 hook with splitshot along the line above it, just enough to keep the bait a foot or less above the bot-

tom. He uses shiners primarily and has had good success on the lively little fishes. His technique is simple, just a matter of scouting the river and looking for places that might be holding fish, then casting to the head of the hole and letting the bait drift through as

close to the bottom as possible. Some veteran guides on rivers from the Chagrin to Conneaut Creek do much the same, using shiners whenever possible. One said "I believe they hate minnows which often steal See Winter Steelheading page 28

Winter steelheading from page 22 their eggs, and strike just to kill them." Simple, but effective and other readers who'd like to try their luck on winter steelhead can do the same. Here's a second thought for winter steelheading that might surprise some readers. I've heard several anglers say they don't seek the big trout because they don't like to wade wearing hip boots or chest waders in often swift water, and the answer here is, "You don't need to" â&#x20AC;&#x201C; though wading is usually more effective. One old timer whose past his wading days, as well as walking rough country to reach holes, does well bucket fishing and simply tightlining on the bottom of deeper pools just as he would for summer catfish. He uses two rods and rigs one with a quarter ounce sinker with a swivel below and a two-foot leader tipped with a No. 10 treble hook and a juicy double hooked nightcrawler. The second rod has a

black hair Foo jig with a red head and three or four maggots on the hook. He tosses them out, puts the rods in forked sticks and relaxes on his bucket, changing pools every hour or so if nothing happens. On one trip he picked up five fish in just a few hours â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this while other anglers up and down the stream were catching one or none. You'll see fishermen on one river or another occasionally sitting on a five gallon bucket and tight-lining too, and the oldster offered

one warning â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you've got to be right beside your rods all of the time. A steelhead takes off like a freight train, and if you're not watchful your rod, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; s likely to go sailing into the river. To forestall this, he holds one in hand and uses about 20 feet of trotline cord on the other with one end tied to a rod butt and the other to his wrist, then fishes both on a light drag. If a second steelhead hits while he's fighting the first (it's happened) he just lets it go, subdues the first fish, and often gets the

See it at the show In Europe, the Prestige 450 has been called “as seaworthy as a French sailor, as elegant as an Italian design, and more livable than any other boat of comparable size. But here in the U.S., it’s being called the “Queen of the Fleet” for the 2017 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show. To be displayed by Sima Marine, the French-built Prestige Motor Yachts enjoy world-wide success with more than 2,500 yachts cruising waters around the globe. “The Prestige success is really founded on a few simple concepts,” explains John Sima, “like, all living spaces on one level, full 360° panoramic views, an independent owner’s suite with private stairway, and other subtle innovations that enhance life onboard.” Prestige yachts could be dubbed the UN of boats. The 450 includes work from Italian designers Vittorio and Camillo Garroni, combined

with an experienced French marine designer, all in collaboration with an America naval architect. The hull has been specially designed for a pod propulsion system which redistributes weight onboard, limits noise and vibrations and improves fuel efficiency by 20%. The joystick control makes handling easy. Moreover, Prestige offers power specifications from Swedish or American engine builders, Cummins and Volvo, including the popular Volvo IPS propulsion POD. Sima Marine is located in Eastlake, Ohio. The Prestige 450 Flybridge will be among the largest boats on display this year at the boat show. second, too. Anglers who like their sport more active can do equally well with live bait, especially at times when the water is clear and low and pods of fish visible. Wear polaroids for good visibility and dull or camouflage clothing, walk the shore until you see fish, then wade out well upstream with a lip hooked 3 to 4 inch minnow. Let it drift down until it's right in a steelheads face, then move it back and forth. Odds are good that, as the guide said, they'll try to kill it. Do the same with a nightcrawler and they'll likely eat it. Remember that winter streams are almost devoid of food and a fish that hasn't eaten in a month (literally) probably wont let a likely meal pass. Finally, don't forget the old time jig and maggots or waxworms. They're not used much these days since many fishermen favor spawn sacs, hardware, or flies, but a tiny jig well baited and drifted through a pool just skimming the bottom can sometimes produce when nothing else will. Remember, sometimes a fish will bite and jerk the float under, other times it might bounce the bobber just like a bluegill, so strike at any change in the floats drift. And don't forget to change colors if your first choices don't work because steelhead can be picky on any given day. But there are some things to keep in mind when wading or even boating, and one is to do it slow and easy. To aggravate a cold blooded fish swimming in near ice water, you'll need to keep your offering in his face as long as possible, and do it without splashing or sudden movements. Whatever your choice of live bait you'll find the fishing easy with not much skill needed. But results can still be excellent. They're simple rules for an actually simple fish.

Salute to a founder

Take a good look at the display area of the North Coast Ohio Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society during the boat show. This year, the Chapter salutes Les Demaline, one of the four founders of the Chapter back in 1995, along with Richard Baratha, Bob Otto and Jack Lynett. Les has served the Chapter continuously since its formation as President and Director at different times, and always as an advisor to any member whose restoring an old boat. By Jack Lynett

Les Demaline was the moving force behind the Chapter because of his many years in boating and his love of wooden boats in particular. You will see only a few of the many boats Les has owned and restored during this show but a good recollection will remind us all that the Demaline boats have been in all the shows, since they began. Les began his love of boats when he joined a Sea Scout Troup as a teenager. In 1952, Les came upon an old kayak that was in need of repairs. He brought it home to his parents basement are replaced most of the frame but had to order the canvas for the outer shell from a local awning company. That boat offered many days of fun at a local pond for Les, and remains in his possession still to this day. After high school, most of his time was consumed with starting the Willoway Nursery business, and boats took a back seat to the

operation of the largest wholesale nursery in the state. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t till the late 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that Les was able to resume his love of boating and acquire boats large enough for Lake Erie and the other great lakes. Les and his wife Marilyn travelled often to Michigan to attend wooden boat shows, and Les took the time to look for further boats that needed restoration, He located boats like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whippersnapperâ&#x20AC;? a 1961 Chris Craft Continental full at an old boat yard in Marblehead, and after a winter of restoration, it was ready and produced winning awards at Mt. Clemens Michigan and Toledo Ohio. As a result of these shows and the contact with other wooden and classic boat owners, Les developed an interest in the Antique and Classic Boat Society, leading to his desire to form the local North Coast Chapter. He served as its President and continues as a Director, as well as serving as a Director on the Board of the international association. See Salute to a Founder page 32

Sea Gar Go: 1947 Gar Wood 18â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Sedan; Hull #8009; Power, Chrysler Crown 6 cylinder, 115hp; Built in Marysvill, Michigan; Production position in Series, 37 of 44; Class, Classic Utility; Owners, Les and Marilyn Demaline. This boat was used on Lake Champlain at a local camp. It was sunk there for several years before a local marina raised it and offered it for sale. It was purchased by late NCO member Bob McEwen, who brought it back to Cleveland. He began its restoration, but sold it to Les Demaline â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all parts and pieces. A difficult boat to restore, there arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t too many of this model left. A gentleman from Fremont, Ohio purchased two of these in the ‘80s and took them to Saulte St. Marie, Michigan where they remained until 2008 when they were purchased by Les Dmaline and Jack Lynett. Recently, Lynett donated his Lyman to the Boat Museum in Clayton, New York.

Buster: 1964 Chris Craft 17’ Super Sport; Hull #CUF170012C; Power, 327 Chevy (original); Built in Cadillac, Michigan; Class, Classic Utility; Owners, Les and Marilyn Demaline; Restored in 1994 by owner. ‘Buster’ was found in a storage barn at Portage Lakes, Ohio. ‘Buster’ has been taken to shows including the 2004 Annual Meeting held on Lake Lanier, Georgia. The Demalines found that she especially likes the “speed Zone” shen travelling on the Portage Lakes. The boat was named for their grandson, Eric, who used to call his grandmother, “Mrs. Buster,” when teasing her.

Rather than see them demolished with the building, Les hauled them back to Avon, where he and Eric worked many hours, restoring the kit boat and naming it “Bullwinkle”. In 2001 Eric won the Junior Craftsman Award for the boat at the Vermillion show, and “Bullwinkle” was displayed here at this IX, show many times.

Les has a total of 17 wooden boats stored in the barns at Willoway Nursery, of which he has restored a total of seven. The eighth a 1936 GarWood, split cockpit speedster is awaiting movement into the shop, for restoration. One of the most interesting of the boats in Les’s collection, is the “Boat-in-a-Box”. The story goes that at a Chris-Craft meet-

ing, Les overheard conversation about the existence of two 1957 Lyman boats, that were never in the water. He explored the story and found out that a fellow in Southern Ohio had bought 3 boats from a dealer, and only put one of them in the water. His employment required that he be transferred, and the two boats stayed in storage. Upon his retirement, he moved to Green Bay Wisconsin and had the boats shipped there. He wanted to sell them according to the story, so Les checked further. He had one of the Willoway trucks in the area, and when the driver reported back that they were indeed “in the box”, he made an offer which was accepted, and the boats

were on the way in a day. In his generosity, he permitted me to buy the 13 foot boat while he kept the 15 footer. After a year or so of dragging the smaller one to boat shows across the country, it was donated to the Antique Boat Museum, in Clayton New York. North Coast Ohio has grown from the original four to over a hundred twenty members, thanks in a large part to Les’s continued assistance. He has been recognized by the Antique and Classic Boat Society with the prestigious Mary Herwig award for his work on the chapter level, and is honored with this Founders presentation at the 2017 show.

Demaline restored and repaired it to nearly original condition. “Whippersnapper” has won several awards, but is mostly used on river trips sponsored by ACBS and NCO, including the Hudson, Ottawa, Tennessee, Sandusky and Mississippi Rivers and the Rideau Canal.

This winter, while you venture out to the boat shows to scope out the new boats, product innovations and marine gear, be sure to keep an open mind for items and luxuries that may seem different or unique. Being in the marine industry we are always searching for new ways to provide value added options to our customers to help ensure they are safe and secure while towing and using their trailer. Similarly, many boat manufacturers, marinas and dealers are trying to do the same. For todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard-working class, everyone seems to be busier, with less time to enjoy

specifications and to match their customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs. This ensures a trailer built to their specific needs as possible, while always making sure the safety of use is the highest priority. Custom trailer manufacturers build trailers for boats ranging from 17â&#x20AC;&#x2122; in length to 52â&#x20AC;&#x2122;, with boat values ranging from $15,000 to $3M, so every trailer is truly unique and has to be customized accordingly. They are finding more often than not that customers, no matter the dollar value of their boat, after having faulty trailers with issues will request that the manufacturer customize their trailer exactly to their needs providing them peace of mind while on the road. The true value of a boat is not what a book tells you it is, it is what it means to you! Occasionally, manufacturers will get the shocking customer that just spent $300,000 on a new boat, but wants a cheap used trailer. However, those customers are

fortunately becoming less and less frequent. It is so imperative that we all protect our investments. Now a days it seems there is an insurance for everything, and a similar concept is to ensure the items we hold most dear, that we work so hard to afford are properly taken care of. Keep an eye open, take a look around and really look at what products are being offered of value with the purchase. Is a dealer trying to sell you a gorgeous, new, expensive boat with a cheap, unsafe trailer? Do they provide the proper warranties and do you trust their customer service? Are they willing to listen to your unique needs and work hard to find an offering that fits them perfectly? At times, it can be a struggle to really understand the value you are getting but with due diligence you should walk away with a smile on your face and excitement in your heart. Happy boat shopping!

Lake County Yacht Club completes extensive remodeling

Lake County Yacht Club just wrapped up its centennial year celebration by completing an extensive renovation of its clubhouse facilities and swimming pool area, and is accepting new members. Voted the number one family club on the Chagrin River in Eastlake, LCYC will have an exhibit at this year’s Progressive MidAmerica Boat Show to invite area boaters to consider membership. “We are a club recognized for meeting the needs of boating families, including the chil-

Sea Dooâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance models are the strongest in the industry BRP offers more performance watercraft options with two new 2017 Sea-Doo models including the high value GTR 230 and new GTR-X 230 with Ergolock system. Both models will be powered by the new 230-hp Rotax 1500 HO ACE engine and join the RXT 260, RXT-X 300 and RXP-X 300 to further strengthen the strongest performance line-up in the watercraft industry. The new Sea-Doo GTR-X 230 watercraft becomes the most affordable X-model (extra performance) and is powered by the new Rotax 1500 HO ACE engine that will push this new watercraft from idle to 60 mph (96,6 km/h) in 5.3 seconds, which is 2.4 seconds quicker than the closest competitive model1. The new GTRX 230 model receives the complete Ergolock system that includes the Ergolock seat, Adjustable Ergonomic Steering (A.E.S.) handlebar, and angled footwell wedges. The Ergolock seat allows riders to hold onto the watercraft better by using their stronger leg

muscles to squeeze the narrower seat, thus improving control and reducing upper body fatigue for a more confidence inspiring ride to push riding limits even further. Powering the Sea-Doo GTR-X 230 and GTR 230 models is new Rotax 1500 HO ACE engine, designed with the Advanced Combustion Efficiency philosophy producing 15 more horsepower than its predecessor while maintaining minimal mass for strong power-to-weight performance. The advances in thermal dynamic cooling and overall refinement in the 1500 HO ACE engine elevates the nimble handling of the GTR platform to the next level of value-minded performance watercraft. The new 230-hp Rotax 1500 HO ACE engine follows the 300-hp 1630 ACE engine innovation, including the plasma-coating technology for aluminum-block engines developed by a Rotax team in Gunskirchen, Austria. The plasma coating technology is a thermal

spraying process that deposits a protective coating on engine cylinder walls to create a metallic layer that provides a hard and durable surface to withstand piston friction forces. It improves surface durability, while keeping the engine lighter and more compact with better heat transfer and superior performance, and reduced use of chemicals. The Rotax ACE, or Advanced Combustion Efficiency, engines implement advancements in combustion and cooling efficiency that produce substantially more power without adding mass. The ACE philosophy aids the new Rotax 1500 HO ACE in producing 15 more horsepower power than the previous version to provide strong power-to-weight performance and is optimized for regular fuel resulting in more money saved at the gas station. While the new engine produces 15 more horsepower than its predecessor, fuel consumption remains on par. Adding to the innovation, the new Rotax 1500 HO ACE follows in the wake of itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s big brother,

the Rotax 1630 ACE engine, with a maintenance free* supercharger. All 2017 Sea-Doo performance models are equipped with the second-generation Intelligent Brake & Reverse (iBR), the intuitive braking system that reduces the stopping distance by nearly 160 feet (48.75 m) sooner2 than deceleration without braking. The Sea-Doo iBR is the first and only braking system recognized by the USCG (U.S. Coast Guard) since 2009 for contributing to recreational boating safety and adds to the rider-centric design approach providing maximum control in all conditions. The 2017 Sea-Doo performance models also include race-inspired features such as highperformance Variable Trim System (VTS), handlegrips with palm rest and raceinspired coloration and graphics.
