“It’s much more than Ohio’s largest boat show,” says show manager Bryan Ralston.

“Besides being bigger this year, it’s a mid-winter rendezvous for all boaters and anglers. It’s an escape from the cold, a chance to climb aboard the latest boats, learn all about fishing or cruising, and meet up with summer boating friends. We’ve incorporated activities and entertainment that make for hours of enjoyment at the show.”

The stars of the show are the more than 400 boats on display by dealers from across northern Ohio. Included in the fleet are many 2018 models being shown to the public for the first time. They range in size from a oneman kayak to cruisers and motor yachts that will accommodate the biggest family, including all those guests who hope for an invitation.

More than 100 exhibits of boating equipment and accessories are always popular with show goers. These include displays from the top marinas and clubs, nautical clothing, the latest electronics, maintenance services, insurance, education, publications, public service exhibits, and more.

All-new this year is the addition of a spe-

cial show within a show dubbed the Fish NOW Expo. It’s centered around the giant 5,000-gallon glass-sided Berkley Tank; boasts a daily line-up of top angling speakers on the Buckeye Sports Center Fishing Stage; features a new hands-on casting pond; includes the popular Kids Fishing 411 Seminars with Dan Armitage; displays from charter captains, fishing equipment, and more.

The rendezvous kicks off in a big way opening night because it’s traditionally “Put-InBay Night at the Boat Show” with a party in the Put-In-Bay section. This year, the Thursday night festive mood will be set by favorite island entertainers, Ray Fogg and Westside Steve. Visitors will be rockin’ to the tunes and sipping The Boardwalk’s iconic lobster bisque brought in fresh from ”the Bay” every day.

Once again the boat show’s title sponsor, Progressive Insurance, will take center stage with its FLO-BOAT exhibit. A hands-on mockup of a fishing cruiser, three visitors at a time man fighting chairs aboard FLO BOAT and catch big Marlin or Sailfish, albeit on fancy simulators. It is a unique, interactive display

We know boaters fish and fisherman boat! So, this year we’ve expanded by adding our Fish NOW Expo, offering a significant increase in fishing activities, seminars and exhibits, all built around the first-ever appearance of a giant 5,000-gallon aquarium, the Berkley Tank.

From the island’s entertainers like Ray Fogg and Westside Steve Simmons jamming on stage on “Put-In-Bay Night” to the unique DEMA “Scuba Now Pool,” not an hour will go by that there isn’t some special event or hands-on activity going on.

We planned the show to have a boating festival atmosphere surrounded by more than 400 gleaming boats of all sizes. Plus, we’re featuring more than 100 accessory and service displays of everything from electronics to nautical wear.

New boats take center stage at the 2018 boat show If a boat show’s success is judged by the number of new models on display, this year’s Progressive Mid-America Boat Show seems certain to be declared a winner when it moors up at the I-X Center.

The sheer number of new models visitors will see will leave no doubt boating is booming! From kayaks to motor yachts, pontoons to ski boats, the show will be loaded with new boats getting their first showing in the Ohio market. “Boat builders are investing heavily in new designs and improved models,� explains show manager Bryan Ralston. “Show visitors will see new hull designs, engines and models boasting the latest in electronics already built-in. It’s like none of the major brands wants to be left behind these days.�

For example, Clemons Boats will exhibit a record 16 Boston Whalers. Flagship will be the all-new 380 Whaler Outrage. But, on the other end of the size range, Whaler is bringing back two of its iconic models the Montauk 170 and 150, albeit up to today’s standards.

The Whalers will join Albemarles, Cobalts, NauticStars and Benningtons in Clemons’ 30boat exhibit.

New boats will also be the focus at South Shore Marine as the new Pursuit 408 gets its first Cleveland showing. Along with other Pursuit models, the exhibit will premiere two new Grady White models, a 236 Fisherman and a 216 Fisherman. They’ll be joined by the all-new Regal 3300 Bow Rider, 26 OBX and 21 OBX. Moreover, South Shore will be calling attention to its all-new customer showroom just completed in Huron.

The all-new Cruisers Yachts 50 Cantius has been named “Queen of the Fleet� at this year’s show, making its premiere in the Skipper Buds exhibit. The “Queen� boasts a large, unique entertainment area aft and luxury accommodations forward. Skipper Buds will also introduce the new outboard-powered Tiara Yachts Sport 38LS that’s leading this esteemed yacht brand into new territory. In all, Skipper Buds will feature boats from 17’ to 50’ in an exhibit that was named “Best of Show� last year.

The 385 HTS is a Eurostyled hardtop express cruiser from English mega-yacht designer Tony Castro, whose designs for Galeon have consistently earned European Powerboat of the Year awards. But MarineMAx, the nation’s largest boat dealer, will also exhibit a fleet of Sea Rays and Sailfish center consoles, among others.

While the big boats often garner lots of publicity and show visitors love to climb board, new designs at this year’s boat show will be found in every size and style category. Take pontoons, for example – they’re the industry’s top selling category and the show will reflect it.

Ravenna Marine, for example, will show off the large Manitou pontoon lineup from 18-23 feet. But Ravenna’s big news is the first showing of a new line, Thunder Jet. These boats, built of heavy-gauge aluminum, are Mercury-powered and boast models from 18 to 28 feet in Open Bow, Pilot House, and Landing Craft designs.

Ravenna will also display Crestliner and Glastron boats.

Meanwhile, Charles Mill Marine, one of Ohio’s largest pontoon dealers, will display models from Starcraft, Quest and Sunchaser. Given that “performance pon-

toons� and tritoons are hot these days, Buckeye Sports Center will lead the way with its display of Apex Pontoons and Harris Flotebote tritoons. Tritoons from South Bay will be shown by Castaway Yacht Sales and G3 Tritoons will be featured by Huron Lagoons Marina, among other exhibits.

Inflatable boats have never been more popular, so it’s no surprise Islander Marine Sales will show off the largest selection of Brig Inflatables. Now the world’s largest manufacturer of rigid inflatables ranging from an 11-foot yacht tenders to 26-foot high performance center consoles, all three of Brig’s series – the Eagles, Falcons and Navigators – will be on display.

Overall, the more than 400 boats in the show will surround a wide variety of accessory and service displays ranging from marinas and clubs to electronics and clothing. The special public service exhibits area will include hands on activities, and the line up of boating and fishing seminars is the most extensive in the event’s history. It’s Ohio’s largest winter boat show and more than 45,000 boaters are expected to make the party this year.

The show rocks with the spirit of “The Bay” on opening night Popular Put-in-Bay entertainers Ray Fogg, Westside Steve and Pat Shepard will headline the live musical entertainment for the gala opening night of the 2018 Progressive MidAmerica Boat Show in Cleveland’s I-X Center.

“It’s become as much a tradition on boat show opening night as it is all summer at Putin-Bay for top name entertainers to gather for a mid-winter party,” says show manager Bryan Ralston. “Coupling their unique music while sipping a cup of the Boardwalk’s iconic Lobster Bisque is what packs the special Putin-Bay exhibit area every first night.”

Ray Fogg has entertained thousands for more than 20 years at “The Bay” on South Bass Island. In fact, each year Fogg presides over the party for the official opening and closing of the tourist season annually held in the island’s famous Round House. He records his unique music for Sweetwater Records.

Westside Steve has been dubbed the Island’s Ambassador because of his many TV appearances in which he never fails to promote Put-in-Bay. And he doesn’t do it only in Ohio. During the spring and fall, Steve is promoting “the Bay” while he’s entertaining on another island, Key West, Florida. There he’s likely found at popular Rick’s Bar, while during the summer he’s usually found making music at the Crescent’s Patio Bar. Pat Shepard will be found at “the Bay” entertaining in Frosty’s Bar. With his original songs, he hopes “most of the people have seen or experienced the stuff I am singing about.” He holds that a performer can’t just play the guitar and sing. “People come to have fun and that’s what I bring to the table

“Put-in-Bay Night is always a great kickoff for the show’s exhibitors and visitors alike,” says Ralston, “because it represents all the excitement of summer boating on Lake Erie. In fact, it draws together boating friends and Island talent for some mid-winter fun. And, the Island’s trademark Lobster Bisque, brought in fresh daily from the Boardwalk, sells out every night.”

Although there is no way of knowing in advance, the party has often been “crashed” by other entertainers who are synonymous with summers at “the Bay.” It can become an even more unique evening with lots of island talent in one place at one time! MAB

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349 For those who want the ultimate hands-on experience in boating, there’s no better answer than sailing, and it will be an important part of this year’s Progressive Mid-America Boat Show.

Sailboats, sailing schools, sailing clubs and an exciting new community outreach program named The Foundry that focuses on sailing and rowing will all be getting the attention of show visitors.

If large sailboats are your passion, Riverfront Yacht Sales (downtown Cleveland) will be displaying a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389 and the smaller Sun Odyssey 349. The 12-meter 389 was designed by Marc Lombard and is a spacious cruising boat reputed to be stable and render good seakeeping.

The Jeanneau 349, like her bigger sister, is considered a perfect combination of performance and comfort. She’s well-suited to family cruising with three cabins, a roomy salon and big cockpit.

Sailing has taken on a new meaning in Cleveland with the development of The Foundry, a non-profit outgrowth of the original Cleveland Rowing Association. Headquartered in an 1893 foundry building, with a clever slogan “Where Athletes are Forged,� the program boasts a state of the art rowing center on Columbus Avenue that houses the best rowing tank in the nation (second best is at Yale!).

Now, The Foundry has rapidly grown to include sailing. Last year it took over the old Coast Guard See Sailing at the Show page 16

The Progressive Mid-America Boat Show has always been about family boating, so it’s a nobrainer that the show includes activities and entertainment for the kids.

Kids Fishing 411 Seminar: New this year, Ohio’s best-known outdoor author and radio personality, Dan Armitage, will bring his popular Kids Fishing 411 Seminar to the boat show. He’s passionate about sharing fishing with kids of all ages. He’ll show kids hands-on how to rig and use a simple cane pole, get the kids to handle live bait like worms and minnows, and keep them fully involved by flashing his World’s Largest Bobber and the World’s Biggest Fishing Hook! He ends each show by taking a child up on the Berkley Fish Tank, demonstrates how to properly fit a personal floatation device, and catch and release largemouth bass in the 5000-gallon glass-sided aquarium. His weekly radio show, “Buckeye Sportsman with Dan Armitage,� is heard every Saturday on 24 Ohio stations. station at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River to develop the sailing program. Aimed at high school and college students, the overall program currently has 4 high school rowing teams and 6 sailing teams including 1 college sailing team.

The sailing fleet is made up of 420’s (most popular double handed learn-to-sail boat), Tartan 10’s, J-22’s and RS Quests. Looking ahead to next summer, The Foundry sailing teams will be competing in the Inter-Lake Yachting Association’s events.

Moreover, The Foundry program has partnered with Edgewater Yacht Club and the Cleveland Metro Parks to increase participation in the learn-to-sail programs. More information about The Foundry program will be found in show in The Foundry booth and at the nearby Metro Parks display.

Other show exhibitors centered on sailing include Harbor North (Huron) that represents Hanse, Walker Bay and Hunter sailboats; Erie Islands Sailing School; Doyle Sailmakers and Great Lakes Rigging; Ullman Sails-Cleveland; Highlander Class Association; Cleveland Metro Parks Sailing; North Coast Sailing Singles; Sandusky Sailing Club; Edgewater Yacht Club; Cleveland Amateur Boatbuilders, among others. An all-star lineup of boating and fishing “professors” will be holding classes on the “Lake Erie University” stage, sponsored by Buckeye Sports Center, at the 2018 Progressive Mid-America Boat Show, January 18-21 in the I-X Center:

Masters Marine exhibit. Boat Masters, will also being exhibiting Chaparral, Crownline, Bennington and Godfrey models. Meanwhile, Beaver Park Marine will boast an all-center console display of Sea Fox Boats including the 186 commander, 226 commander, 249 Adventure Side Console, and 266 Commander. Regrettably, all new 286 Commander won’t be available for the show, now expected in February.

Other fishing models will be found in the exhibits of MarineMax showing Sailfish, and Portage Lakes Marine displaying Polar Kraft boats. MarineMax also features Sea Ray and Galeon yachts, while Portage Lakes will display a series of Regal Boats, too.

Pursuit Boats are famous for their fishing designs. The new Pursuit 408 center console model with triple Yamaha 350’s will lead a large South Shore Marine exhibit. They’ll also have two Grady White premiere showings of the 216 Fisherman and the 236 Fisherman, among other models.

All anglers, whether expert or novice, are expected to applaud the addition of the “Fish NOW Expo” to this year’s Progressive Mid-America Boat Show. It’s the largest fishing orientation in the boat show’s long history.

Highlights include the first-ever appearance of the 5000-gallon glass-sided Berkley Tank featuring daily seminars by well-known Ohio anglers Jay Gillsillan and Jim Vitaro; two special presentations of “Kids Fishing 411” by outdoor broadcaster Dan Armitage; and angling seminars by tournament champions like Mark Brumbaugh, Jim Stedke, Travis Hartman, Ray Buddie and John Hageman.

Seminars and angling exhibits notwithstanding, fishing boat models ranging from the increasingly popular fishing kayaks to the triple outboard-powered mega-center-consoles will be found throughout the show.

For example, Cabela’s, a name synonymous with fishing and outdoor gear, will join the boat show for the first time. And, in a big way – displaying fishing machines from Mako, Tracker and Nitro (also Tahoe sport boats and pontoons from Regency and Sun Tracker).

No names are bigger in center consoles than Regulator and Key West. Catawba Moorings will have its largest exhibit to date boasting a Regulator lineup that includes the 34, 31, 28 and 25foot models. In addition, Key West will unveil a brand new 263 Center Console displayed with the Key West 21FS, 23FS and 23DFS. Fishing models from Robalo and Alumacraft will also be ready for boarding in the Boat

Celebrating their 24th year of being one of Ohio’s biggest fishing boat dealers, Vic’s Sports Center will present a large exhibit of Ranger, Starcraft, and Starweld boats. They’ll also display the Ranger Reata pontoons that come complete with rod racks and seating with fishing in mind. Meanwhile, Happy Days Boating, with its traditionally large display, will offer the newest models from Parker as well as center consoles by Robalo and Tidewater. cheaper â&#x20AC;&#x201C; using less material and inferior quality material. Buyers may purchase a NAME they know or have owned in the past; not realizing it does not have the same quality.

As the CEO of a salvage and repair company, I saw many changes in boat construction. I encountered boats poorly built in the past, now ranked among the best. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. Some boats that were among the best built are now selling on name only and their quality may be greatly diminished. The quality or lack of it means purchasers may not be buying what they expect.

All this may lead you to think, there is always the warranty. This is another area of a boat purchase the buyer needs to look into before he signs on the dotted line. A problems that has always plagued the boat building industry is warranty service. Problems stem from a variety of reasons. Dealers are not paid a fair amount for correcting factory defects thus they are reluctant to do warranty work when they can make a better profit on out-of-warranty repairs. Another problem for the servicing dealer is he may replace or repair a boat under warranty only to find out the manufacturer disclaims responsibility and the dealer is left without reimbursement.

Another problem with warranty service is getting parts needed for repairs. If a manufacturer can only get enough parts to keep his assembly of new boats going, he may back order replacement parts. The dealer therefore, although willing to make the repairs, cannot get needed parts. I have

This time each year, boat shows pop up everywhere and fishermen and women and all those who enjoy going boating start thinking about a new boat. One of the best places to check them all out is at the Cleveland Boat Show.

I have repeatedly advised, when buying a used boat, purchasers should request a survey or at least check with a marine consultant before buying. Problems are often encountered with a used boat purchase. Seldom do you have an option of going back on the seller â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a fact that usually provides the incentive to take the plunge and buy a new boat.

Buying a new boat could also present risk. If this statement leaves you confused consider this, many major boat manufactures have changed hands, some more than once. They have sold out for a variety of reasons. A major one could have been lack of profits. It is a certainty a new company taking over will have the bottom line as an objective.

A well-known business strategy that contributes to higher profits is purchasing power. A manufacturer of multiple model boats can obtain volume discounts. This helps meet the anticipated profit margin and is just good business.

Another way companies increase profits is by building the same brand name boat

heard of new boat owners missing all or a good portion of a season just waiting for repairs.

When shopping for a boat of any size a buyer usually makes price comparisons. When comparing a number of boats of like size and construction if one is priced well below the other beware, there must be a reason. A buyer should investigate before buying. If a boat is cheaper priced because it is made with cheaper material, it may not be the best buy.

I have encountered boats that manufacturers cut the quality to the maximum in order to stay priced below the competition. In my opinion, purchasers of these models made poor selections and will likely regret their choice for years to come.

Not all boats are inferior but a "brand" name is no longer enough to guarantee a well-built product. If you are purchasing a new boat, check with other boaters that have also made a new boat purchase recently. Ask them frankly if they feel they got the best buy for their dollar. Ask questions about any warranty repair matters.

Carefully check the construction of a new boat before you buy it. If you are not completely satisfied, find a consultant or surveyor to question. There are also information hotlines such as those available through Boat U.S. These sources cannot advise you what to buy, but they will tell you about any major problems or recalls they have been made aware of.

Buying a new boat can be a great experience.

Do not rush into a deal until you have gathered all the information you can get. Your time spent researching may increase the time you have for boating in the future. MAB

The “Go Dive Now” pool has become a popular feature at the boat show and it will return this year for the 61st Annual edition of Ohio’s oldest and largest boat show. It’s actually a special pool and exhibit created by the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association (DEMA). While snow may be falling outside, show attendees inside who have always wanted to try scuba can literally head under water accompanied by a

certified instructor coach.

The traveling DEMA 30-foot, 15,000-gallon pool and exhibit is complete with all the newest diving equipment including wetsuits, fins, masks, compressors and much more. “Go Dive Now” will be manned by professional instructors recruited from area dive shops and schools.

Show visitors wanting to get the scuba experience should bring a swim suit and towel. There are some restrictions: Ages 10 to 15 will be required to have an adult in the pool with them. Teens 16 and up must be accompanied by an adult who is not required to be in the pool. The lesson

Now that their grandchildren are getting old enough to do so, they wanted to be able to provide that fun!

2018 Calendar of Wooden Boats continues to delight The 2018 Calendar of Wooden Boats® featuring the work of internationally recognized marine photographer Benjamin Mendlowitz is now available. The 2018 edition of the Calendar of Wooden Boats® marks its 36th year of publication.

Ice fishing South Bass and the mainland

By Richard Martin The coming of hard water traditionally means no fishing for months to come, but boaters willing to spend some hours peering down an ice hole can still harvest a good catch of walleyes, and coming from very cold water they're even more tasty than usual. You can catch walleyes in a number of inland lakes, but it's become tradition for a modest number of serious anglers to head for Lake Erie when ice is good and fish are biting, and why not? The big lake is

only about an hour or two drive for many offseason boaters, and fishing up there can be an interesting business. Some will soon be hitting Erie marinas for big crappie and perch, others might be working a few miles off Catawba Island State Park or parts more western which can be a little chancy unless ice is thick.

But, other than the marinas, there's one place that's pretty safe, often offers excellent fishing, and lets anglers enjoy their day in a quiet, windswept spot where ice sculptures

drape the shorelines, and sundogs might be seen on sparkling clear nights, a lovely world that's totally unlike hometown farm ponds and lakes. That's territory between South Bass Island and Rattlesnake, a place where the ice is anchored, holds tight, and grows thick, in this strange and almost exotic place.

Anglers planning to fly over will call and make reservations at Griffing Airlines (1-419-734-5400) just east of Port Clinton, head up there in the pre-dawn darkness, and wait for a flight. Most will be carrying big buckets holding a couple of short ice rods, a selection of

exotic winter destination, keep in mind that it's not a guaranteed business just like fishing anywhere. There'll be days of storm and high winds when bites are few and far between, and days of calm when they might hit rapidly. I've fished all day up there with never a strike and filled a limit more than once in less than an hour. You never know. But the basic tactic is a simple one. You'll fish with two rods each holding a jigging spoon or other type of jig, the hooks baited with shiner minnows. Lower the rig to bottom, reel up a turn, then start jigging the lures gently up and down a few inches, first one then the other. Strikes might be highly noticeable, but often are just a bit of added pressure as the fish below sucks in your offering. Then strike and start reeling.

that late bite, a total of 10-11 hours. There might be others guiding at least part-time this winter, and Griffing Airlines should have a list. You'll call one of them up, make a reservation, and on the appointed day they'll meet you at the airport, take you out to a shanty already heated with a bucket of minnows handy, and check in from time to time to see how the fishing goes. Then at the proper time they'll haul you back to the airport and see you off, hopefully with a bucket of walleyes..

It's important to have a guide for walleye fishing, and while ice fishing guides seem to come and go on South Bass these days there's at least one on the island, Mike Patterson (419-308-6925). Mike charges $260 per person per day, which seems like a lot, but he furnishes all gear, provides lunch, and lets anglers fish from dawn till dark to pick up

Ice Fishing from page 37 Some dedicated anglers with time enough might like to go later in the day, fish the evening until dark, spend their night at one of several B & B's or other facilities (guides should have lists), and be back in the shanty before the first planes even begin loading. Staying overnight can be a good idea since there's often a serious bite at dawn and dusk, which flying anglers usually miss. And it gives you a chance to explore the abundant nightlife of South Bass, which the last time I was there consisted of one bar, For general information about lodging, food, etc. you can call the Ottawa County Visitors Bureau at 800-441-1271. They should have what you need.

But whatever your choice, a trip to South Bass can be an unusual and fun event. It's admittedly a little pricey though, since even a day trip can run to several hundred dollars. If you'd rather skip plane fare and maybe an overnight, there are plenty of guides on the mainland willing to take you out, One is Jeff Jeffers (330-360-5106) who runs Double J Charters and concentrates his guiding efforts in the Western Basin. Another is Eric Hrizel (419-467-7526) who also guides around the Basin. And you can get a full list by Googling Lake Erie Ice Fishing Guides.

Whoever you pick, call and ask their price, what they offer for visiting anglers, and how the fish are biting at the moment. If you're tired of fighting cabin fever, this whole area can be a sure cure once firm ice arrives. MAB

In addition, GLCC has special ambassadors in over 200 Great Lakes harbors. These ambassadors are their GLCC Port Captains â&#x20AC;&#x201C; dedicated members who have special local knowledge and take pride in welcoming visiting members to their home ports. The Port Captains are a great resource when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re planning a cruise or when out cruising away from home. By phone or e-mail, a member can contact any local Port Captain for advice.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever been out of Lake Erie, you may have seen distinctive blue and white burgee with five interconnected chain-links forming a complete circle. This very special burgee identifies the boatsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; owners as members of the Great Lakes Cruising Club (GLCC).

GLCC members can be found all over the Great Lakes and their tributaries. You can find them on the water from Duluth to Quebec, from Chicago to Buffalo, and from Toledo to Toronto.

Some members are partial to the legendary North Channel, others prefer cruising the secluded wilderness of Georgian Bay or Lake Superior, while others just love to stay close to home and search for one more special harbor.

The GLCC has more than 2,500 members in the U.S. and Canada and their boats can be found in over 400 Great Lakes harbors. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re known to be a friendly bunch of serious boaters who warmly welcome new members. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re happy to share their love of the lakes and their knowledge of how to cruise them.

GLCC was founded in 1934 with the purpose of sharing cruising information among its members. This is still the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s core purpose. The GLCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous Log Book and Harbor Reports contains decades of detailed observations by members who personally visited the areas, anchorages, harbors or waterways described in the reports. These Harbor Reports â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there are over 1,100 separate reports â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are available to members through the GLCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s web site. Each Report is viewable, printable, and savable to your computer or hand-held device for off-line use while cruising.
