Specifically, this event will showcase the wide variety of boats well-suited to Ohio’s inland lakes and rivers, ranging from popular pontoons to family runabouts, along with displays of related water sports equipment. The atmosphere will be “summer beach party,� complete with daily steel drum musical entertainment.

Area fishermen aren’t left out, either. A wide variety of fishing boats will be found throughout the show. And this year, clinics on area fishing, for example largemouth bass which is Ohio’s signature fish, have been added to the list of show features. “It’s a no-brainer to have this show in Akron,� says Ralston, “with so many popular waterways within easy reach of the greater Akron-Canton area, it was long overdue to have a show of this kind in the heart of that market,� said Ralston.

From paddle boards and kayaks to high performance tritoons and personal watercraft, the 2nd annual Progressive Akron Boat & Water Sports Show will again dock in downtown’s John S. Knight Center with more boats and the addition of fishing seminars and wakeboarding clinics. “Whether you want to make waves or ride on them,� says show manager Bryan Ralston (left), “the variety of water sports being enjoyed by families today keeps increasing, and it’s why we anticipate nautical enthusiasts from through northeast Ohio will converge on our boat show this year.�

The attendance at last year’s first-ever run of this show documented its acceptance by area boaters and anglers. It’s also attributable to the fact that the market for water sports boats and equipment, including fishing, is enjoying double digit growth for the boating

If you assume the rapid expansion of wakesurfing is a sport being enjoyed just by the young, you’d be dead wrong! That’s why it will be a key part of the 2018 Progressive Akron Boat & Water Sports Show slated for March 2-4 in the downtown John S. Knight Center.

The fact is, wakesurfing is being recognized as a way to get teenagers off the couch and away video games to more healthy outdoor activity. But, here’s the surprise – the aging baby boomers are reportedly being drawn to this activity as are the Generation X’ers and the Millennials.

Boomers say they’re finding wakesurfing has a far lower physical impact on them than hanging on to the tow line for wakeboarding or traditional water skiing. Essentially, the wakesurfer stands atop a special wakesurfing board and skims along close behind a boat designed to provide the ideal wave height for genuine hands-free surfing.

Not surprising, major boat builders have quickly responded to the wakesurfing trend by designing new models. These boats take the well-established tow boat design and modify it to allow the driver to operate the boat so it produces the best wakesurfing wave. They’ll be part of the fleet on display at the boat show and will include brands like: Malibu’s Wakesetter and Nautique’s G-21 with “Surf Select Switch”; Regal’s new RX Surf models; and others majors including Vortex and Supra.

If names like Voodoo, Slingshot, Big Easy and Liquid Force entice you, these are examples of the wakesurfing boards and equipment that will also be part of the boat show scene.

models can also feature functional granitetopped wet bars, mood-setting illumination, motorized mooring covers and even built-in grills that would leave old grandpa shaking his head!

The show will boast everything from $15,000 basic pontoon models to the ultrafancy ones carrying a price tag of than $50,000. Ohio’s largest pontoon dealers slated to exhibit in the boat show will including Charles Mill Marina (showing Starcraft, Apex, Quest, Sunchaser); Atwood Lake Boats (Harris, AquaPatio); Boat Masters (Bennington); and Ravenna Marine (Manitou), among other dealers.

Whether you’re interested in the latest fishing boats, family runabouts, tow boats or pontoons, the dozens of boats being displayed in the show by northeast Ohio dealers will feature the latest technology that’s proving to be hot buttons for today’s boaters.

None are hotter sellers or exemplify more the exciting high tech designs in today’s boats than the good old pontoon boats.

Warning: If you’re picturing something like your grandfather’s old slow-mo floating platform, be prepared for a shock!

Today’s pontoons and newest tritoons (a third float chamber) do more than just putter along. With high horsepower outboards on the stern, they’re now towing water skiers, knee boarders and tubers around the lake all day long. But it’s the amenities topside that will really leave you wide-eyed.

I-LYA welcomes aboard Mike Powers as their 125th Commodore Mike Powers, of Monroe, Michigan, is the Inter-Lake Yachting Association’s 125th Commodore. His homeport is Monroe Boat Club, located at Bolles Harbor, Michigan. He previously served the I-LYA as Trustee in 2015 and as Powerboat Chair in 2016. Mike was honored by being named Mid-America Boating’s Skipper of the Year in 2016.

Mike started in small sailboats with his father at Kiser Lake Sailing Club, north of Dayton, Ohio. He continued sailboat racing while attending the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, sailing a variety of boats ranging from 12 foot cat rigged dinghies to a 73 foot offshore racing ketch. Mike also sailed on the USCGC EAGLE, a 295 foot barque, while at the Academy.

During his career with the U.S. Coast Guard, Mike served on three icebreakers on the Great Lakes, including the USCGC MACKINAW, Cheboygan, MI; the USCGC MOBILE BAY, Sturgeon Bay, WI; and as Commanding Officer of USCGC NEAH BAY, Cleveland, OH. His last shipboard tour was on USCGC POLAR SEA, Seattle, WA. While aboard POLAR SEA in 1994, the ship became the first

United States surface ship to reach the North Pole and, in company with the CCGS LOUIS S. ST-LAURENT, they were the first surface ships to cross the Arctic Ocean. Mike worked in communications, information systems, and electronics support while ashore. He retired in 1998.

Following his Coast Guard career, Mike was an Electronics Engineering Technology instructor and Dean with ITT Technical Institute and an Assistant Professor and Electrical Engineering Technology Department Chair at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI. He retired from teaching in 2013.

Mike and his wife, Kathy, arrived in the Monroe area in December of 2006 and joined the Monroe Boat Club in January of 2008. He has served as Power Fleet Captain, Financial Secretary, Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore, and Commodore in 2014.

Mike and Kathy can often be found either sailing aboard their J/24, MARINER, or cruising around western Lake Erie aboard their boat, VOYAGEUR. MAB

With about 70 percent of all boats used for fishing at least part of the time, angling will be a prime topic at the Progressive Akron Boat & Water Sports Show, March 2-4, in the Knight Center.

New this year will be a series of on-stage fishing clinics by local experts. They’ll be surrounded by dozens of the latest fishing boat models from major brands. While many on display will be boats well-suited to fishing on Ohio’s myriad of inland lakes, others, like models from Boston Whaler or NauticStar shown by Clemons Boats, can chase walleye on “big lake” Erie, too.

Expert fishing advice will also come from tournament-tested pros that are manning dealer exhibits and are ready to freely share

Fishing boats and clinics share the spotlight at this year’s boat show their tips on fishing for everything from bass to Muskie.

For example, Vic’s Sport Center, named the #1 Ranger Boats Dealer in the nation, will showcase not only the extensive Ranger lineup, but StarCraft and Starweld brand fishing boats as well. And, the boats will be manned by angling experts daily who’ll enjoy nothing more than to talking about this summer’s fishing outlook.

The same will hold true in the Ravenna Marine display that will feature fishing and runabout models from Crestliner. The big news from Ravenna is the introduction of a new line of high quality, all-aluminum fishing boats powered by Mercury outboards. These Thunder Jets range from 18 to 28 feet in Open, Pilot House and even a unique Landing Craft models! Rounding out the Ravenna display will be a selection of Manitou pontoons from 18-23 feet.

Boat Masters Marine (Akron & Lake Milton) joins the fishing group by feature a wide variety of Alumacraft angling models, along with the popular Robalo brand boats, among other major boat brands.

More fishing boat models will be found in the Buckeye Sports Center exhibit featuring Lund and Bayliner boats, along with other boats including pontoons from Apex and Harris that are used as much for fishing as cruising around the lakes.

With the economy in expansion mode and the boat dealers seeing a big increase in demand this year, it’s notable that the show dates are critical for boat buyers to be certain that they can order a new boat and get it delivered by the boating season. Any later order may not be met by spring because many manufacturers are already notifying dealers their programmed 2018 production is nearly exhausted.

When show visitors need a break from talking fishing and climbing aboard boats, they’ll be able to relax and enjoy some live steel band music and “summer party” food and refreshments. MA

Lately I have been asked by a few different women what my go to products are for looking fresh in the summer and while boating. It all started with a conversation I had with a customer who stopped in our facility with her husband to pick up their new boat trailer. They were a younger couple and brand new to boating.

She was a little terrified of being on the water

without any experience and was looking for advice and pointers in all regards.

Of course the first thing I recommended was the she and her husband both took a boating course. I also suggested they speak with their boat salesman and ask them for a detailed lesson on the water with their specific boat. The conversation eventually lead to her asking for tricks to stay looking fresh and not like a wind-blown

My beauty must haves for boating

‘tasseled’ windblown look. When my hair was really long, if I knew we would be stopping to eat or where I would see the public, I would twist my hair into a tight bun, so when I let it down when we reached our destination it was wavy and loose and not a mess.

• Always waterproof mascara, even if you are not getting in the water. Your eyes may water from the wind.

• Awesome, quality sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful rays and glare off of the water.

• Keep a “ball cap” style hat and a cute/trendy sun hat on your boat at all times. In case it is just one of those days where your hair is a lost cause.

• Do not forget a chapstick or lip gloss with spf. I am a fan of using spf chapstick, then I put shiny gloss on top of it.

• If we plan to go knee boarding, tubing etc. where I will be getting wet, I always bring a spray conditioner for my hair when we are done to help get the knots and tangles out.

• Always pack a lightweight windbreaker or long sleeve sun shirt. You don’t want to overdue your sun exposure and of a cute windbreaker and boat shoes can make any outfit look pulled together!

• Girly tip: usually your first tan lines of the summer are the hardest to get rid of so plan accordingly and don’t forget your sunblock!

March and early April bring some difficult choices for Buckeye boating anglers. A nice, sunny day comes along and you'd dearly love a fishing jaunt, but the water is too darn cold. Bass are sluggish, bluegills and crappie still in deep water, and channel cats are holding in the deepest holes they can find.

You might try for steelhead trout in Lake Erie tributaries, and this is a good choice, They're hungry now, thinking about spawning and therefore aggressive, and ready to strike.

But it can be a lot of work, and a lot of walking, and tight concentration on what you're doing. If you're looking for lazy fishing with a good catch most times at days end, you might try your luck on early suckers. Quite often I opt for the third choice.

Suckers start spawning around the middle of March, weather deciding, and continue their spawning runs into early April, which makes anytime from right now to another week or three prime time to try your luck on these bony fish.

Few lakes don't have a large population of suckers and if that lake is fed by a stream, you're in business because they're certain to swim up its length

into smaller and smaller tributaries to spawn in little creeks and rills. They travel up rivers too, and I've caught them in hotspots from the Sandusky to the Kokosing, not to mention below lake dams in the tailwaters, and in creeks small enough to jump across. But the top spot to catch BIG white suckers is in the tributaries that feed Lake Erie. There's plenty of food in the big lake, and fish grow rapidly. I've caught heavy stringers of lunker suckers in such rives as the Huron and Vermillion, and you can, too.

They've got to be the worlds boniest fish and at the same time, one of the most sweet meated and delectable.

I solved this problem with advice from a couple of old timers, and it's worth passing on. The easy way to handle suckers is to push fillets through a meat grinder, and convert the result into "salmon patties". They're mighty tasty that way. Or you can score the fillets

underslung mouth, and enjoy a brisk, though usually quick battle as a pound or so white sucker comes splashing ashore.

If there are any special techniques in this brand of lazy fishing, it's to move occasionally. Cast a line here, wait 10 minutes or so, then cast there, and over that way. If nothing develops in 45 minutes tops, there are probably no suckers in that pool, and you should move elsewhere. Otherwise, and in a good spot, bites will come frequently, and you'll eventually head home with a dozen or so on the stringer.

The first time I caught a mess of suckers, and this was many years ago, I could hardly wait to get home and try them for lunch. The fillets came crisp and brown from the skillet, and I hungrily bit into the first one. Then spent the next several minutes pulling small

nice, sunny day. I fish suckers tightline with two hook rigs. A sinker goes onto lines end, then above and about a foot apart I tie a couple of No. 6 snelled hooks. That's all it takes.

Since suckers tend to move mostly at night and lay up in pools during the day, pools are a prime place to seek them.

So, you find a likely pool, maybe on a river curve, toss out your worm baited rigs, place them in forked willow sticks, then sit back and relax. That's what I like best about sucker fishing. You sit there, maybe on a grassy bank, watch blackbirds fight for territory, a muskrat swim by, and listen to the water chuckle while watching the two rod tips. Sooner or later, one of those tips should start to twitch a little or bend gently as something out there sucks in the worm and moves leisurely off.

Fog banks often move in quickly. Be sure to take note of your present position.

Navigating in fog is not an everyday occurrence in heartland waters but when it rolls in, boaters feel insecure.

Most captains, no matter the size of their vessel, will admit they would prefer dealing with wind and waves to fog.

More than one alarming circumstance is present when fog navigating in fog; visibility is restricted and all vessels in the area are experiencing the same conditions. Some operators believe they can outrun fog by increasing their speed, others immediately head for shore and a few panic. All of these responses are improper and can lead to serious problems.

While working in my salvage business, I received a call from the Coast Guard requesting I determine the position of a vessel calling for help during foggy conditions. The captain said he needed medical assistance so using my RDF I located his boat and began communicating with him. I asked for a slow ten count and calculated he was in dangerous water along a rocky reef.

I instructed the captain drop anchor as I picked my way around the rocks to reach him.

I requested a ten count again but noted the vessel was still underway. The captain yelled, “I am getting out on my own.� About two minutes later he hailed MayDay saying he was

listen for unusual sounds. Insist they make you immediately aware of any sightings or sounds. > Dial your VHF to monitor Coast Guard broadcast channels; listen to learn the area under fog conditions and if boats nearby are in trouble. You will hear them instructing any vessel in shallow water to drop anchor and maintain their position until conditions improve. > Sound the appropriate signals by bell or horn as required by Coast Guard Rule 35 of the Inland/International Rules of the Road. > If you hear an odd sound stop, shut down your power and determine what you heard; another vessel, traffic on shore or perhaps a call for help. > Monitor your electronics; keep aware of your depth and maintain a straight course but don’t ignore the need for looking and listening. If you become uncertain of your position, speaking slowly and calmly use your VHF to ask for assistance. > If uncertain of your position your best option may be to anchor and wait out the fog.

Strong winds are rarely present during fog conditions.

If you spend time on the water, undoubtedly you will find yourself in fog. Be prepared; your cruise may be delayed but you can get in safely. MAB

After we extracted and towed his vessel ashore, the captain had to be hospitalized due to his panic attack. His vessel was extensively damaged and a lengthy repair was required.

If you are on a large body of water, with good visibility, you may be able to spot a heavy fog bank approaching. You may have time to make the next port or safe moorage. How fast the fog bank is moving or how soon it may engulf your vessel is unknown. The best action to take is preparation for reduction in visibility before it arrives. > Verify your position via your electronics; GPS, depth indicator, etc. and constantly monitor them. > Slow to a safe operating speed and be prepared to stop within the distance of visibility. > If you have capable persons on board, appoint them as lookouts. 1. Injuries from ladder falls can be severe but are preventable. When using a ladder to climb aboard your frozen boat, be sure it is firmly planted, secure it with a line to avoid shifting, and have someone hold the base.

Never descend a ladder facing forward or with your arms full. If moving tools, supplies or other objects to and from the deck, lower or raise them in a bucket using a rope.

2. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t trust the nonskid to do its job. Nonskid decks are slippery when covered by snow or encrusted with ice.

Brush away any buildup on the deck where you plan to step, and always hold onto something, just as you would if you were underway. In warmer winter climates, decaying leaves and algae can also make decks slippery.

3. Snow and ice are heavy. One square foot of dense, wet snow can weigh more than 20 pounds, so use caution when going underneath a tarp or winter cover thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s loaded with snow. For even a small boat stored outside, over a ton of weight can be added after a storm, so brush off what you can before climbing aboard.

4. Check your jackstands for proper support.

Jackstands or blocking can shift as the boat gets laden with snow and ice, or due to repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

Never adjust jackstands yourself. Have marina personnel adjust and move supports.

5. Trailer boat frames should be supported at the rear cross beam. This prevents the tongue from lifting off the ground like a seesaw when climbing aboard from the stern. MAB

Marine-tough LED strip lights provide illumination during 1,500 mile trip, enhance safety and functionality for boats and watercraft When Marc Phelps broke the world record for the longest solo journey in a small flat-bottomed jon boat, traveling over 1,500 miles down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, he relied on an advanced new type of ultra-thin LED strip lighting to safely keep his footing in the fast moving rivers, as well as provide quick access to his gear.

“If I needed my whistle, lifejacket, fire extinguisher, emergency tools or supplies, I wanted fast access without fumbling in the dark with a

flashlight,” says Phelps, who piloted the 20’ long, 7.5’ wide jon boat with a 50 horsepower motor down the rivers in three weeks. “The LED lighting made it safer and easier for me to see everything and be seen; it wouldn’t be hard to fall off the boat if I tripped on something I couldn’t see clearly and lost my footing.”

Up until recently, LED strips were relatively thick and inflexible, making it difficult to conform to contoured surfaces or bend around tight corners.

Now, however, advances in thin-film LED technology are producing much brighter lighting, using paper-thin strips that are flexible enough to bend around corners and contours.

Yet the lighting is rugged enough to stand up to a harsh marine environment, where saltwater, wind, waves, and storms can often be expected.

Such LEDs can also be easily installed into the existing lighting power system or a supplied battery box. As a result, the number of applications and locations for LED safety and functional lighting is skyrocketing for maritime and watercraft use.

In Phelps’ case, he relied on the XTL Marine Kit by Grote Industries, a leading LED lighting manufacturer.

According to Phelps, he opted to install the LED lighting under a lip on his jon boat’s seats, in the benches, and as perimeter lighting on the outside of the boat, in a battery operated solar panel powered application. The product includes patented thin-film technology only 0.5 mils thick (equivalent to a piece of paper) in 34” strips that produce a very high 475+ lumens.

With LED lights on, one can see the boat from about a half mile away at night.

LEDs can also improve visibility for steps, floors, cabins, galleys, bathrooms, and anywhere else that needs more light.

Designed specifically for boats and watercraft, the XTL is designed to meet or exceed established industry standards. This includes being waterproof, submersible, and capable of withstanding pressure washing with hot water, rather than just rain-resistant.

The LED light strips are also resistant to 25 of the most common chemicals associated with watercraft in the event of exposure or spills, including diesel fuel, motor oil and battery acid.

“Typical flashlights, lanterns and lights shined from above casts shadows and usually ties up the use of one hand,” says Phelps. “Having the even LED lighting from below eliminated any issue of shadows, freed up both my hands, and evenly lit the entire inside of the boat. This was key in helping me to safely, quickly access and sort my supplies whenever I needed to throughout the trip.”

There will also be information about the many USPS boating classes offered both on line and in classrooms throughout this spring. USPS boasts more available boating courses than any other such organization.

Enhancing Watercraft Safety and Function For powerboats, sailboats, yachts, kayaks and other watercraft, traveling at night, in low light conditions such as dusk or dawn, or even when overcast or foggy, can be downright risky with only standard lighting.

While traditional green or red safety lights at the front or back of the boat provide some visibility to other vessels, in most cases collision avoidance could be improved with added lighting.

Now LED lighting is providing such supplementary illumination.

“At night you can barely see the green and red safety lights that boats are required to have,” says Mark Turk, who pilots a pontoon boat on a river near his home in Bradenton, Florida. “You can get startled by a boat popping up in front of you that you didn’t realize was there.”

Turk has installed Grote’s XTL LED lighting on all four sides of his pontoon boat.

“With the LED lights on, you can see the boat from about a half mile away at night,” says Turk. “It could also help in a similar way at dusk, dawn, or when it’s overcast, foggy or visibility is not clear.”

To improve safety, Turk also installed the LED lights under the seats shining on the floor, and in key compartments.

“LEDs can also improve visibility for steps, floors, cabins, galleys, bathrooms, anywhere that needs more light,” says Turk. “They also allow us to see into dark compartments much easier.”

As owner of Mad Mark’s Stereo Warehouse in Bradenton, Turk has found that the LED lights also fill a need among his customers who own boats. To date, he has installed them in a number of his customer’s watercraft, including powerboats, yachts, and even a jet ski.

One aspect that has impressed Turk is the flexibility and ease of installation of the new, thinner LED light strips. The product is installed with peel-and-stick tape and can be connected to the existing power system or a supplied battery box.

He was also impressed by the ultra-thin profile of the LED lights, as well as their durability.

“Before, LED lights were a lot thicker and quite inflexible, making it difficult to bend around tight corners,” says Turk. “We often had a heck of a time installing them.”

Not to be overlooked for Turk, however, is the “fun factor” of such lighting, which allows creative uses.

“These LEDs are fun and there’s so much you can do with them, such as light up a party boat, a sailboat’s mast, or even kayaks, canoes, rowboats, or wakeboards,” concludes Turk. “Because they are so bright, easy to use, and require so little power, they give us options we never had before.”
