They call it a boat show, but perhaps it might be better called the season kick-off party when the Progressive Catawba Island Boat Show docks at the prestigious Catawba Island Club for three days, April 27 – 29.

Marking its 14th anniversary, the show at CIC has come to mark the opening of northern Ohio’s boating season. It boasts a fleet of nearly 100 boats, most displayed in-the-

One of the prime benefits for show visitors is seeing and boarding 2018 models that have been arriving at dealerships since the boat show in Cleveland last January. Obviously, the in-water format also allows dealers to show larger models that couldn’t be trucked to or displayed at the indoor show. Moreover, the selected pre-owned boats headed for the show are mostly larger models, too.

Another benefit of the CIC event is the ability of dealers to provide demo rides and sea trials. Unlike other in-water shows, no boats at CIC are blocked in and can, therefore, be demonstrated.

“It’s as much a spring boating party as an expo,” explains Bryan Ralston, president of the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association. “It features food and entertainment and it’s the

From pontoons to motor yachts, the Progressive Catawba Island Boat Show, April 27-29, will boast a fleet of nearly 100 power and sailboats this year.

The boats will range from 8’ inflatable dinghy’s to 50-foot-plus motor yachts. The attraction of this annual show is that visitors can climb aboard many new models that local dealers have received since the big Cleveland show last January, or were simply too large to be displayed at the indoor event.

Many new models make a splash at the show

Boston Whaler 350 Realm Heading to the show with a big display of 14 models, the flagship of the Clemons Boats (Sandusky) exhibit this year will be the allnew Boston Whaler 350 Realm which is expected to arrive from the factory just at Showtime. The Realm will be accompanied by several other Whaler models including the new 345 Conquest.

For excitement, Clemons will also feature the new Bennington 25Q Tritoon powered by a 350 hp Mercury Verado! Other brands in the Clemons lineup will include Albemarle, NauticStar and Cobalt.

Fishing machine, sailboats, pontoons and more will be dockside for the weekend when the exclusive Catawba Island Club opens its grounds to the public for the 2018 Progressive Insurance Catawba Island Boat Show, Top dealers from northern Ohio will be showcasing and demonstrating their latest models from dinghies to motor yachts.

For example, Reed Yacht Sales (LaSalle, MI) will be premiering Weldcraft, a new brand to the Great Lakes market. Built of heavy gauge aluminum, Weldcraft has been an iconic brand of fishing boats in the Pacific Northwest since 1968 where anglers fish year round in all weather. Weldcraft features 29 models from 16 to 30 feet. At CIC, Reed will be displaying Weldcraft’s 280 Cuddy King, 240 Maverick and 210 Revolution, along with a Ranger Tug R-23 and the Zodian Medline 660.

Brands that are well-known to anglers

include Regulator, World Cat and Key West boats. They’ll all be dockside at CIC from Catawba Moorings (Port Clinton), led by the Regulator 34 Center Console with triple 300hp Yamaha outboards and the Regulator 28 CC with twin 300hp Yamahas.

New to Catawba Moorings this year is the World Cat brand and the 295 Dual Console model with twin Yamaha 300’s will be displayed along with two Key West models, the 239 FS and 219FS both with Yamaha power.

Castaway Yacht Sales (Port Clinton) will be docking four of their Tidewater Boats, ready for sea trials. These will include the 23 Tidewater LXF, 220 LXF, 220 Center Console and 210 LXF. The LXF models boast family-friendly forward seating and the 232LXF also features a large rear seat with a walk-thru transom door.

Tidewater hulls feature the “Carolina Flare” for a dry ride.

The fact is center consoles designs, once not popular in the northern Ohio market, are now the mainstay of fishing models being purchased by anglers. So, it’s no surprise this show will boast a big choice of makes and sizes ranging from triple engine performers to rigid hull inflatables ready to chase Walleye, Perch and Smallmouth.

Of course, one can fish from virtually any boat, any size, including the latest in cruisers and motor yachts that will be dockside at CIC. Like the newest Formula Yachts being displayed by Marine Tech Concepts (Port Clinton); the Prestige Yachts line from Sima Marine (Eastlake); cruisers and motor yachts from Sea Ray, Azimut, Galeon and Sailfish models displayed by MarineMax (Port Clinton).

On the other hand, if sailing is your passion, Riverfront Yacht Sales (Cleveland) will be sailing into the CIC show with a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389 along with a Sun Odyssey 349.

Take a break at the show with craft beer offerings and music from Steve Brownell "Beautiful!" is hardly a word used to describe a boat show. Still, it's commonly voiced by visitors at the annual Progressive Catawba Island Boat Show.

Perhaps it’s the show's unique setting at the prestigious Catawba Island Club. Or, maybe it's the fact that this show, first held in 2005, is a sure sign another boating season has begun. But, whatever you call it, fun is a trademark of this event.

Headlining the live music on the entertainment deck overlooking the marina will be singer-songwriter Steve Brownell. He recently recorded his latest album in Nashville titled “No Matter What.” He is one of the boater’s favorite entertainers that regularly appears during the summer at Put-In-Bay. While listening to Brownell, show visitors can also partake in the current popularity of

The Story in Brief NASA rocket explosions and a series of unsolved murders disrupt the idyllic calm of Chincoteague Island, a quiet barrier island on Virginia’s east coast better known for its annual pony swim.

“Chincoteague Island is like Put-in-Bay on valium. What a peaceful setting waiting to be disturbed by my new novel,” Adamov commented. “When I heard that the nearby NASA rocket base had experienced several launch explosions, I had the idea for a plot.”

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Chincoteague Island Volunteer Fire Department.

By Richard Martin It's a magic time of year for boaters who love their Lake Erie smallmouth fishing.

Water temperatures usually reach 55 degrees sometime in May, and that temperature sends these bronze colored, red-eyed, hard fighting, high leaping gamesters into shallow water for that yearly spawning ritual. Fishing this spring will be just for fun, since the Division of Wildlife has a closed season on smallies from May 1 through June 29. That's no problem for most anglers since these bass aren't that great on the table anyway.

But they are indeed fun to catch.

See one doing a hula dance against a Lake Erie sunrise, and it's easy to become an addict.

Smallmouths are caught the length and breadth of Lake Erie, and they can be had as easily off Toledo as Conneaut, but there's no question that the western basin with its multiple islands, reefs, rocky shoals, and riprap shorelines are the peak spot for a day of pure pleasure. And there are several ways to enjoy that day, again depending heavily on water temperature. If bass are still pre-spawn

with water temperatures hovering around 50, a classic tactic is to drift and cast.

Find yourself a good section of rocky shoreline, move out into 20 foot depths and start casting anything from chartreuse tube jigs to twistertail jigs in black or brown, bumping them slowly along the bottom.

If nothing turns up, move into 15 feet, and drift some more, then 10 feet. You should find them eventually, then it's just a matter of holding to that depth and having great fun fighting it out with fish that might reach four pounds plus. When temperatures reach that vital 55

degrees, bass move in close to shore, some into just 3-4 feet of water, more into depths of 5-8 feet, and fan out nests in rocky areas, gravel, on reefs, riprap shorelines, and other areas holding a good mix of rock and silt.

pay off. Don't forget spinners like white Roostertails and Mepps, or sinking Rapalas.

They'll hit live bait below a float too, as many an angler on crappie expeditions has found.

One of my personal favorite tactics is to walk around marina docks with two white maribou jigs, one tied on lines end and another on a short side line about a foot above, and gently bounce the jigs up and down around pilings, along riprap shorelines, and channels. That tactic will not only bring smallmouths, but channel cats, nice perch, bluegill, crappie, and the occasional largemouth. Wherever you fish during spawning season, return the fish immediately to the same place they were caught. They'll return to the nest quickly, sadder, but wiser.

Post-spawn fishing can be the best of all.

Boaters can still drift along close to shore and take fish, but now shore walkers have a chance. Many a boater will leave his craft tied up, walk around the marina and cast here and there to make a fine catch of smallmouth bass. The same baits can be used, tube and regular jigs, but now small crankbaits and dark plastic worms that look like leeches will

dusk to feed up on shallow water minnows, emerging May flies, crayfish, and other tidbits. I've camped on Kelleys Island many a time and used a small canoe to work rock filled waters near the campground. In such thin water, a pearl grey Roostertail spinner, small Rapala, or little crankbaits that imitate crayfish can bring steady action, often with a bonus of white bass and even channel cats.

As the morning progresses the fish move deeper again, then it's time to work water up to 20 feet deep with bottom bumping Lindy rigs holding lip hooked minnows or soft crayfish. You can still catch them on jigs, but live bait usually produces best.

Where to catch bronzebacks would fill a book, but there are always places better than others. The Bass Islands were named for their huge population of "black bass", so many that anglers in the late 1800's fished for them commercially with hand lines. And one top spot in May is right in Put-In-Bay harbor.

Work your way completely around the harbor ending around Perry's Monument, and don't forget to cast waters around Gibralter Island and Peach Point. Almost equally good action can be found near the other islands, large and small and various reefs.

A personal favorite is Kelleys Island, and I favor casting from the islands south tip clear to the little downtown area. Along the mainland, fish are caught on both sides of Catawba Island and down the shoreline to Marblehead, especially north and south of the lighthouse. And don't forget the outer reaches of Sandusky Bay and country down around Ruggles Beach. Hard to go wrong with May smallmouths, and a great way to spend some lively hours. MAB

Electric vs. Surge Brakes: Double check your state law to see if surge brakes are legal. Many states do not allow surge brakes, including many provinces of Canada. The advantage to surge brakes is you can use pretty much any tow vehicle because you do not need a brake controller.

The advantages to electric brakes are they are legal in all states and Canada, they provide full braking power in forward and reverse, and they instantly activate, where surge brakes have a delay. Surge can be viewed as a hassle because they often lock up on you if you try to back up any sort of an incline.

For Sailboats: Bunks vs Screwpads: For heavier, tall sailboats the screwpads are usually recommended because they are stronger when placed on the structural bulkheads of the sailboat. For most sailboat styles, a keel rest/keel guide is recommended.

GVWR versus Payload: The GVWR is the total combined weight of the trailer and what it can carry. So you have to subtract the physical trailer weight from the GVWR to get the net Payload: (GVWR - Trailer Weight = Payload). Net payload is the maximum boat weight the trailer can support.

Axle Placement: A key ingredient in owning a boat trailer that tows amazingly well is the axle placement. You want to make sure the axles are placed according to the boat’s center of gravity: this establishes proper tongue weight and ensures you get an equal load distribution over the axles. MAB

Galvanized Steel vs. Aluminum: Steel is up to 3 times stronger than aluminum I beam. Also, most aluminum boat trailers are bolted together rather than welded. Additionally, most aluminum trailers come equipped with galvanized cross members and axles so where the galvanized steel makes contact with the aluminum frame, electrolysis can form. In regards to galvanized trailers, they can be made as either the tube steel or C channel steel as mentioned above.

Bunks vs. Rollers: Properly fitting bunks should be shaped to support the keel and hull of your boat. You want a majority of your boat’s weight to be supported around the keel, which is why you want bunks as close to the keel as possible (in most cases).

A lot of boat trailer manufacturers will have two bunks flipped on end so the boat is resting on the smallest side of the bunk, which, in our opinion, is not recommended and can make loading and launching a challenge since the boat sits up so high on the trailer.

Rollers can actually damage a boat’s hull due to pressure points created by the rollers. Some boat manufacturers will void a hull or gel coat warranty if their boat is placed on a roller trailer.

Tubing vs. C-Channel Steel: With tubing steel you cannot protect the inside of the steel, so when moisture gets trapped inside the frame it can actually rust from the inside out. With C Channel steel you do not have to worry about internal rusting issues. Similarly, because all the wiring is secured inside the tube frame of a tube steel trailer, if you ever have a mechanical issue it can be tricky to access the properly wiring for a correct fix. Some people prefer the aesthetic look of tube steel over C channel, however.

Drum vs. Disc Brakes: If you plan to use your trailer in salt water, disc brakes are always recommended. Disc brakes also require less maintenance. Drum brakes are less costly, however, so for use in fresh water, drum brakes are a great option.
