Refinancing Student Debt: Is It Right For You?

or many, graduation marks the end of college and the beginning of paying down college debt. It is estimated nearly three-quarters of people who go to college graduate with student debt and the “average” graduate owes nearly 30 thousand dollars. “It was a little daunting,” said Jason Clark, who has student loans. However, there is a new startup promising to lower those loan payments by finding the best refinancing deal. Ten years after his graduation, Clark decided it was time to speed up the repayment process by refinancing his student loans with Credible. “It gave me about five or six different offers,” explained Clark. Credible bills itself as an online marketplace for loan offers working with about 15 lenders, including a new crop that specialize in refinancing student debt. “It’s a Kayak or Expedia or Amazon for loans,” explained Stephen Dash, the founder of Credible. Dash says the average user saves $18,000 over the life of their loan.

by refinancing their student loan to a lower rate,” Dash said. But Suzanne Martindale of Consumers Union warns refinancing isn’t right for everyone. “People who are likely to have a high debt to income ratio may not even qualify,” Martindale said. In addition, she says borrowers with federal loans could lose important protections if they refinance with a private company. Options like the ability to delay payments and loan forgiveness after 10 years in public service. And she says refinancing college debt is a relatively new and untested industry. “That tells us that we have to proceed with caution,” Martindale said. So far, Clark is happy he refinanced a portion of his student loans after reviewing his options on Credible. He calculates his 1 percent interest reduction and shorter loan term could save him about $10,000. “It felt really good to see there was a light at the end of that tunnel,” he said. Unlike mortgages, there are no fee or points to refinance a student debt. Credible earns a fee from the lender if the refi takes place.

CDC: 40 Percent Of U.S. Cancer Cases Linked To Being Overweight

A

new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is drawing a disturbing connection between obesity and over a dozen forms of cancer.

According to the department’s latest edition of Vital Signs, at least 13 different types of the disease have been linked to being overweight or obese. U.S. health officials say 40 percent of all cancer diagnoses in the country were associated with obesity in 2014. Older Americans were at even great risk as two-thirds of the cases were in adults between 50 and 74. “A majority of American adults weigh more than recommended – and being overweight or obese puts people at higher risk for a number of cancers,” CDC director Brenda Fitzgerald said. “By getting to and keeping a healthy weight, we all can play a role in cancer prevention.” The findings also pointed to the number of obesityrelated cancers growing over the last decade. The study found that cancers tied to obesity increased by seven percent between 2005 and 2014. That number did not include colorectal cancer. Cancers that weren’t associated with obesity declined in the U.S. by 13 percent.

South Florida Survivor Works To Boost Education in Haiti

lipping through photos of young smiling faces, Christa Remington feels connected to each one.

“We have 103 kids on our waiting list,” she said. Each child is waiting for an education and Remington, an FIU graduate with a PhD in Public Affairs, is doing everything she can to give it to them. “Education is empowering. When we educate that child, then the tools are in their hands to succeed,” Remington told CBS 4’s Lauren Pastrana. Remington first traveled to Haiti on a community service trip when she was 15 years old. “I saw children my age not in school. I went on summer vacation, I saw 12, 13, 14 year olds who hadn’t even gone to kindergarten,” she said. “It changed my entire outlook on the world. I wanted a career that invested in humanity.” So she started “The Mission Haiti”, a nonprofit that provides scholarships to Haitian students to cover the cost of tuition, exam fees, uniforms, and shoes. She made countless trips to the impoverished nation as part of that mission, but in 2012, she got sick.

“I got typhoid while I was in Haiti and I couldn’t come home. It was an awful experience. That same year I also got dengue fever. So I think both of those intense illnesses back to back damaged my nervous system,” she said. “It is fatigue and pain. It’s fatigue to a level that I cannot describe it. Some days I can’t get out of bed.” But Remington doesn’t just keep getting out of bed, she keeps going back to Haiti. “I have to. That’s my family there. I have six godchildren there. I have two nephews there. It’s home to me. This community that I’ve invested so much of my life in, I can’t imagine not being there,” she said. She says the disparity between the medical treatment she received here and the health care available in Haiti gives her more reason to continue on her mission. “In our program we have about 400 kids. We had 40 lose a parent this past year, this past year, mostly from preventable diseases. We had a little girl die. It’s the first time we’ve

had one of our students die, just from a fever,” she explained. “That’s one of the reasons we push education. All the statistics show just going to kindergarten increases life span.” The program’s first graduate is now in medical school. Remington says she shares the title of “survivor” with him, and many others. “I would say the real survivors are these kids. And their parents. We have parents who have all the challenges that I have times 10,” she said. “I still have challenges on a day to day basis, but I’m not stopping. I know people who live with debilitating illnesses and they’re not stopping either. They’re not going to let this derail their existence.” To find out how you can help The Mission Haiti, visit themissionhaiti.kindful.com.

Broccoli May Be Key To A Healthy Gut

F

or many, the stigma about eating their broccoli goes all the way back to their childhood dinner table. A new study is giving stubborn eaters and veggie lovers a fresh reason to eat their minitrees: it may be the key to a healthy gut.

According to researchers at Penn State University, a diet filled with broccoli may help patients to cope with digestive issues such as leaky gut and colitis. The Penn State study was carried out with mice, who were found to be much more capable of tolerating digestive issues than those who weren’t put on a broccoli diet. The scientists added that the results could be a breakthrough for humans, as digestive problems can reportedly lead to other severe issues. “There are a lot of reasons we want to explore helping with gastrointestinal health and one reason is if you have problems, like a leaky gut, and start to suffer inflammation, that may then lead to other conditions, like arthritis and heart disease,” professor of agricultural sciences Gary Perdew said in a statement. The scientists explained that eating broccoli produces a chemical compound known as indolocarbazole (ICZ). The compound is a catalyst that creates a healthy balance in the gut and immune system. Perdew and his team switched out 15 percent of the mice’s diet for broccoli, which would reportedly be the same as a human eating three and a half cups of broccoli each day. “Now, three and a half cups is a lot, but it’s not a huge amount, really,” Perdew added while also offering an alternative vegetable to try. “Brussels sprouts have three times as much (ICZ), which would mean a cup of brussels sprouts could get us to the same level.”

‘Mutant Chickens’ Laying Eggs Full Of Cancer-Fighting Drugs

W

hich came first, the mutant chicken or the cancer-fighting egg? That’s the interesting new question scientists in Japan are experimenting with in the quest to cure cancer.

Researchers from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan’s Kansai region are using genetically engineered hens to lay cancer-battling eggs. To create the medicated eggs, scientists modified the chickens’ genes so they will produce eggs full of the disease-fighting drug interferon beta. Interferons are a type of protein that is used to treat various diseases like multiple sclerosis, hepatitis, and cancer. Cancer patients can take the drug through injections three times a week to prevent cancer cells from multiplying and fight tumors. The treatments are extremely expensive and can reportedly cost between $250 and $900 for just a small amount of interferon. According to reports, there are three females that are each laying eggs every few days. The research team hopes to be able to regularly produce eggs carrying up to 100 milligrams of interferon beta in each one. The breakthrough of easily produced drugs would likely result in dramatically reduced costs for the cancer-fighting agent. “This is a result that we hope leads to the development of cheap drugs,” Osaka University’s Hironobu Hojo told The Japan News. “In the future, it will be necessary to closely examine the characteristics of the agents contained in the eggs and determine their safety as pharmaceutical products.”

Smartphone Apps Can Reduce Depression

A

new treatment for depression may have been found and the prescription could be to simply look at your smartphone more.

According to a new study, published in the journal World Psychiatry, the use of mental health apps by people dealing with depression has resulted in significant improvement in their conditions. Researchers from the U.S., Great Britain, and Australia studied over 3,400 adults between 18 and 59 years old who were all suffering from mental health issues. The patients took part in a number of trials involving 22 smartphone apps focused on improving mental health. “The data shows us that smartphones can help people monitor, understand and manage their own mental health. Using apps as part of an ‘integrative medicine’ approach for depression has been demonstrated to be particularly useful for improving mood and tackling symptoms in these patients,” Professor Jerome Sarris said. The study’s co-author added that the work highlighted the importance of opening up self-managing avenues of care for people with depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety. Climate Change Will Triple Turbulence On Flights

By Giovanna Maselli • gmaselli1@cbs.com

Y

our flight may get a whole lot bumpier in the future thanks to climate change, according to a new study.

By 2050 to 2080, climate change may cause nearly three times as much clear-air turbulence – something pilots cannot avoid since it is invisible to the naked eye and undetectable by sensors on board, the study says. If you’re taking a flight over the north Atlantic, their research shows you’ll likely experience about 180 percent more sever turbulence and 124 percent more light-tomoderate turbulence. Flights over North America will experience 112 percent more severe turbulence, the study published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal says. For flights over Europe, there’s expected to be about 160 percent more turbulence – making that euro-vacation way more bumpy. This means more ‘potentially hospitalizing in-flight bumpiness’ due to clear-air turbulence which is one of the largest causes of weather-related incidents on planes. While the study, does give a forecast of what may come, researchers had so far only looked at transatlantic flights that were about 39,000 feet during winter. Despite that, the study says, they used multiple computer models that found turbulence is on the rise around the world, through the whole year and at different altitudes. Researchers said this highlights the need to improve turbulence forecasts and flight planning to limit passenger and crew injuries. Even though the rules don’t take effect until April of 2018, Prasad’s card company did return his money, and he was able to stay in his apartment. Prasad isn’t sure how criminals were able to drain his account. The new rules were supposed to take effect in October of this year, but were pushed back six months to give the industry more time to comply.

Lauren’s List:

Online Dating Lingo Explained

T

By Lauren Pastrana • lpastrana@cbs.com

he dating app Tinder celebrated its 5th anniversary recently. Other dating sites have been around for decades already. But a new generation of online daters are looking for love on their smartphones, with as many as 27% of 18-24 year olds saying they have used online dating tools.

Of course, these younger users have brought some new lingo into the mix, so today’s “Lauren’s List” breaks down some key words and phrases you need to know if you plan to jump in the online dating pool. Cuffing Season It’s upon us! Cuffing season is the period between October and February when it’s cooler out and people want to cuddle up for the holidays. The terms is so widespread now, that it’s actually the name of a rap song and album. Negging I’m surprised and somewhat disturbed that this this is a “thing”. Negging is the online act of semi-insulting potential lovers or giving them backhanded compliments to start with so they’ll feel insecure and more open to advances. Not cool, online daters. Not cool! FBO You’ve probably heard that a relationship isn’t official until it’s Facebook Official, and that’s what FBO stands for. Many people hold off on posting their dating status on Facebook until things are really serious. Ghosting This is a coward’s way of ending a relationship. Someone who “ghosts” simply disappears without warning or explanation. Similarly, exes who suddenly pop up months later texting you or liking your posts are called “zombies”. What other words did you learn from your online dating adventures? Tell me on Facebook or Twitter. If you have an idea for a future “Lauren’s List” send it to lpastrana@cbs.com.

PUPPY LEAVE Company Offers ‘Puppy Parental Leave’ For New Owners

P

arental leave is not something new but how about paid time off for you and your pup.

A craft beer company called Brew Dog is now offering ‘Puppy Parental Leave.’ It’s paid time off for a week for you and your new furry friend as you both get acclimated to each other. Employees can also take it as a time to train their cute pooch.

The company says workers are welcome to bring their dogs to the office which already has about 50 ‘office dogs.’ According to their website, the company said they started the work perk after noticing their employees really cared about two things above all others – “our beer and their dogs.” The company also says they offer enhanced paternity and maternity leave for “two-legged arrivals.”

What about after that week? Employees won’t have to say so-long to their cute pup.

IRS Warns Of Another Phishing Scam Targeting Tax Professionals

T

he IRS has issued a warning about another phishing scam, this time targeting tax professionals and their clients. There may be variations but it tends to follow the same pattern.

The cybercriminal, impersonating a legitimate cloud-based storage provider, entices a tax professional with a phishing email. The tax professional, thinking they are interacting with the legitimate cloud-based storage provider, provides their email credentials including username and password. With access to the tax professional’s account, the cybercriminal steals client email addresses. The con then impersonates the tax professional and sends emails to their clients, attaching a fake IRS insurance form and requesting that the form be completed and returned. The scammer receives replies by fax and/or by an email very similar to the tax professional’s email – using a different email service provider or a slight variation to the tax pro’s address. The subject line varies but may be “urgent information” or a similar request. Here’s an example of a sample email: Dear Life Insurance Policy Owner, Kindly fill the form attached for your Life insurance or Annuity contract details and fax back to us for processing in order to avoid multiple (sic) tax bill (sic). The cybercriminal, using data from the completed form, impersonates the client and contacts the individual’s insurance company. The cybercriminal then attempts to obtain a loan or make a withdrawal from those accounts.

ooking up in the kitchen at the all new ‘Etaru’ on Hallandale Beach, New Zealand-born chef Hamish Brown has been at the helm of it’s well-established sister restaurant in London called ‘Roka.’ Etaru is all about modern Japanese “robatayaki” cuisine and their state of the art, multi-level robata grill. “We want to cook with heat as much as fire,” said chef Hamish. “The idea of this grill is we have different layers and can control the heat and how we actually cook.”

Japanese food,” the chef replied. “We believe we are really approachable Japanese cuisine.” The robata grill makes it the every day dining experience. “It’s something fresh for the area,” said chef Hamish. “We’re really excited about it.” Chef Hamish knows his customers are savvy when it comes to the food, thanks to the internet generation.

The oceanfront space, with warm woods and soft tones, features dining inside and out.

“The general public’s knowledge of cooking techniques and how to cook has changed dramatically over the last 10 years, especially here and in the U.K. People know more than the cooks in my kitchen, I tell you,” he said.

“What are you going to do to bring in the locals to this space, which is so beautiful,” asked CBS4’s Lisa Petrillo.

Vision Impairment A Growing Problem With Preschoolers

A

recent study shows tens of thousands of preschoolers are struggling with untreated vision problems For 7-year-old Peyton Gifis, visits to the eye doctor are now like clockwork.

And it’s for good reason.

At just two and a half years old she was diagnosed with a condition called strabismus, a misalignment in her right eye that forced it to turn inward and required corrective surgery. “It was scary, it was definitely scary,” said her mother Devon Gifis. Since then Peyton has been getting annual, comprehensive eye exams, which Doctor Saysha Blazier says go far beyond the simple eye chart test at school or in a pediatrician’s office. “If a kid can read far away, they can usually pass those eye tests,” said Dr. Blazier. “But when it comes to reading up close, they may have major difficulties that are not detected. The words might look like they swim around on the page.” A recent study published in Jama Ophthalmology finds more than 174,000 preschoolers have vision impairment and the problem is growing. “Every child should have an eye exam,” said Dr. Blazier. “The American Optometric Association recommends at six months, to get the first exam.” “It now has just become one of those yearly examinations, rather than waiting for a problem – it’s now part of our every year routine,” said Devon. Peyton hasn’t had any issues since her surgery. “I’m happy that I don’t have to get glasses because I don’t want them,” Peyton said. And now she’s focusing on second grade. Eye doctors say if parents notice kids are holding a book too close, squinting or frequently rubbing their eyes, those may be signs of an eye problem.

all the ties sold in our store are 100% handmade in Italy throughout each stage of their creation. The fundamental cutting and bending techniques employed, give fluidity, lightness, ease and value to the fine fabrics utilized during the process.

The stitching is completed entirely by hand in order to obtain elasticity, without any rigid constraints that may diminish the beauty of the fabric. All our ties are equipped with a “filo di frizione”, an essential accessory to keep every tie looking its best. The “filo di frizione” is an element that belongs to the ancient Neapolitan tailoring tradition. It is aadelicate thread that with only a simple tug, aad keeps the tie sturdy, and returns the structural stitching of the tie to its original position, making it look brand new. This aspect of the tie also avoids the manual adjustment of a worn tie, in which one could risk damaging the delicate silk. The “filo di frizione” in the t Añel seven-fold tie has truly managed to revitalize this revolutionary sartorial tradition.

Organic Gardening

Learn what makes something organic, and find out what you need to start your own organic vegetable garden.

Content provided by lowes.com

What is Organic Gardening? The term “organic” describes farming and cultivation practices that enrich the soil, manage and prevent pests and disease without the use of synthetic chemicals and protect heirloom plant varieties. Organic gardeners consider the entire ecosystem as they grow their plants, working in harmony with the water supply, wildlife, insects and local community. Organic gardeners strive to enrich the soil with compost and choose plants suited to the local environment instead of exotic varieties. Gardeners using organic practices are enthusiastic about green living and environmental protection, and many people believe that organic fruits and vegetables contain more essential nutrients than conventionallygrown produce. When you eat organically-grown food, you avoid exposure to pesticides, fertilizers, preservatives and other synthetic chemicals. The satisfaction of growing organic fruits and vegetables in your yard includes a greater connection to the plants’ natural processes. Because you won’t be working with potentially dangerous chemicals, you can feel good about letting your kids work with you in your garden, and you don’t have to worry about your pets coming into contact with pesticides. Organic Seeds For a fruit or vegetable seed to be labeled “organic,” it must be approved by the USDA through a robust testing process. Look for the USDA Organic label to make sure you’re getting organic seeds. Organic seeds are produced through green farming practices. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering can’t be used. Many people believe these practices are healthier, and they are popular with folks who are more earthconscious. These seeds can be a little more expensive, though, because of the extra care it takes to grow organically. If you’re going to spend the extra cash to get organic seeds, it makes sense to continue to use organic methods to grow your crops. The seeds will grow with synthetic fertilizer and non-organic soil,

but you’ll enjoy the satisfaction of knowing your fruits and veggies are 100% organic. Ask your local Lowe’s associate where to find the best organic soils, fertilizers, seeds and more. Insects and Organic Gardening Organic gardeners work with the natural environment instead of against it. So if you are beginning an organic garden, learn about beneficial insects. Bees and other pollinators are crucial to spreading pollen in your garden. You can encourage bees in your garden by planting flowers that attract them, providing a source of shallow water for them to drink and leaving a bit of bare ground for them to make nests. Spiders are also beneficial because they catch and eat other bugs that might eat your plants. While some beetles can be pests in the garden, others, such as lady bugs, are useful because they feed on aphids and mites. Protect these insects by avoiding pesticides or other toxic sprays. Even organic pesticides can harm beneficial insects, so only use them when your crops are being attacked and only on specific plants. Your best option is always to hand-pick insects that are on your plants.. Weeds in the Organic Garden There are organic alternatives to fighting weeds. Be vigilant to pull weeds when they emerge to prevent them from leaving seeds. It’s easier to pull weeds when it’s been wet for a few days, so wait until after you water or a rainfall to make it a no-fuss process – just be sure to get all of the root when pulling up weeds. . You can use compost or other organic mulch to keep the weeds from seeing the light of day, which will kill them. Cover the bases of your plants with a 1 to 3 inch layer of compost, which will also serve as an excellent organic fertilizer. You can also target specific weeds with white vinegar, or look for organic alternatives at your local Lowe’s Garden Center.

How to Patch and Repair Drywall Content provided by lowes.com

B

efore You Shop consider these points and plan your purchases accordingly:

different surface textures appear between the patch and the surrounding paint.

• Decide whether you want to repaint the whole wall or just touch up patched areas. If you’re patching tiny nail holes, you can cover up the repairs by dabbing on touch-up paint with a soft cloth. • If you’re patching a large number of holes and other damage, prime the patched walls before repainting -- especially if you’re choosing a semigloss or shinier finish. The higher the gloss, the more

Caution • Before you begin your repair, it’s important to know the utility placement in your home. Typically, electric wires are attached to wall studs. Locate the wall studs before you begin cutting, drilling or nailing drywall. • Wear protective clothing, work gloves, goggles and a dust mask when working with drywall.

Small Dents and Dings Scrape away loose debris from the hole. Cover the hole or dent with fastdrying spackle to bring the spackle level with the drywall surface and let it dry 24 hours -- or the time recommended by the manufacturer’s instructions. Sand smooth. TOOls • Drill • Drywall Saw • Utility Knife • Joint Knife • Tape Measure • Scissors • Dust Mask Materials • Construction Adhesive • Drywall Tape • Masking Tape • Drywall Screws • Joint Compound • Drywall Patch Kit • Drywall Scraps • Drywall Patch Plaster • Drywall Screen • Sanding Sponge

Popped Nail Heads A popped nail isn’t holding in the stud and backs out of the drywall, creating a popped nail head. Step 1 Drive a drywall screw 1 1/2 inches above the popped nail head into the stud to reattach the drywall to the stud. Sink the screw head just below the surface of the drywall so it can be covered with spackle. Step 2 Drive in the popped nail. Step 3 Cover the sunken screw head and nail head with spackle until level with the wall surface. Wait 24 hours or the time recommended in the manufacturer’s instructions. Sand smooth. Small Holes For small holes, like those created by a doorknob, a patch kit may be used. Step 1 Place the self-adhesive mesh patch over the hole. Step 2 Use a drywall knife to cover the patch with lightweight joint compound in a crisscross pattern, feathering the edges so it blends with the wall. To feather the edge, increase pressure and angle on the drywall knife as you reach the outer edges of the patch area to minimize, or thin, the joint compound on the drywall. Step 3 Let the patch dry and apply a second coat of compound if needed. Sand smooth.

Medium Holes For holes up to 6 inches, use the California Patch. Step 1 Cut a piece of drywall into a square shape that’s 2 inches larger in width and height than the area to be repaired. Step 2 Score the back of the drywall with a box cutter or knife about an inch from each side. Step 3 Snap off the gypsum, but leave the paper backing intact. Step 4 Hold the patch over the hole and trace around the gypsum square. Do not include the paper border in your transfer. Cut out the traced square with a drywall knife.

Caution Before cutting, check the hole for electrical wires. Typically, they are attached to studs. Step 5 Apply joint compound to the back of the paper border. Fit the gypsum into the new hole and press the paper edges coated with joint compound into place along the outside edge of the hole. Step 6 Cover the entire patch with joint compound until the lines are camouflaged, feathering the edges. Step 7 This patch may require two coats of compound, with dry time in between coats. Sand smooth. Large Holes For holes larger than 6 inches, you’ll create a drywall patch with a different attachment method for the repair.

Step 1 Cut a piece of drywall into a square a little bit bigger than the hole. Step 2 Hold the square over the hole in the drywall and trace around the edges. Step 3 Cut along the lines on the wall with a drywall knife.

Caution Before cutting, check the hole for electrical wires. Typically, they are attached to studs. Step 4 Inside the hole, attach a furring strip, a small, thin piece of wood, to either side of the hole with screws. Sink the screws beneath the surface of the drywall. Step 5 Set the drywall patch in place and screw it into the furring strips, sinking the screws beneath the surface of the drywall. Step 6 Apply joint tape to the borders of the patch. Joint tape is made of mesh and strengthens the bond between the patch and the wall, reducing movement and helping to prevent future cracks. Step 7 Cover the patch and tape with joint compound, feathering the edges. Allow the compound to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply a second coat if needed. Sand smooth. Corner Bead Patch Corner bead is used where two pieces of drywall meet to form a corner. Corner bead is available in a variety of

materials, including metal, paper and vinyl. Step 1 Cut the damaged corner bead horizontally, both above and below the mar, with a hacksaw. Step 2 Use a utility knife to cut vertically along the drywall, connecting the top and bottom cuts from the hacksaw on the left and right sides. Remove the damaged piece. Step 3 Cut a new piece of corner bead to fill the gap and attach it to the wall with nails or the manufacturer’s recommended fastener or adhesive. Step 4 Apply joint compound to both sides of the corner, covering the bead patch to smooth rough edges and cover any seams, feathering the edges. Let dry and sand smooth. Finish the Repair Step 1 Finish all repairs with a final light sanding to ensure a satin smooth finish and seamless blending between the patch and the wall. Step 2 Cover with a coat of primer, and let dry. Step 3 Finish with paint.

Repair Textured Drywall Step 1 Sand your patch area smooth. In a small bowl, mix 4 parts joint compound and 1 part water. Dip a stiff brush into the mixture and hold it close to the wall, bristles up. Step 2 Flick the mixture onto the wall by running a gloved finger across the surface of the bristles. Typically, the faster the flicking motion the smaller the particles on the wall. Good to Know: Practice and perfect the flicking motion on a scrap board before applying to your wall. Step 3 For a knock-down finish -- one where a trowel presses joint compound down to form a texture that’s more mottled than a flat wall -- lightly flatten the particles with a knife as the compound mixture begins to dry. Step 4 As an alternative to flicking compound, you can use textured spray in a variety of finishes. Shake the can and spray the patch area in a circular motion 6-18 inches from the wall. Step 5 Allow the textured compound to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then prime and paint the surface.

Repair Asphalt Driveway Cracks

The forces of nature do their best to break down asphalt, creating cracks and potholes. Repairing driveway cracks is a lot simpler than you may think.

Content provided by lowes.com Repairing Cracks in Your Driveway Cracks up to 3/4 of an inch wide can be repaired with a pourable or tubed asphalt patch product. A tubed product requires a caulk gun for application. Good to Know: Some products seal cracks up to 1 inch wide.

TOOls • Wire Brush • Garden Hose and Nozzle • Utility Knife • Putty Knife • Caulk Gun (for tubed crack sealer) Materials • Asphalt Crack Sealer

Step 1: Remove all dirt and vegetation from the crack with a wire brush, screwdriver, or trowel tool. Step 2: Use a garden hose or pressure washer to flush out any remaining debris and allow the crack to dry before applying any crack filler. Step 3: Next, give the bottle a through shake to ensure the material is completely mixed. Tubed product does not require mixing. Carefully cut the top of the spout to the desired width. Step 4: Fill the crack flush to the adjoining pavement. Smooth out the crack filler even to the height of the surrounding pavement. Good to Know: During the drying process, the filler may soak into the crack and may need a second coat. Allow the crack to dry 24 hours before applying a second coat. In addition, you will need to wait at least 24-48 hours before driving or walking on the repaired area to allow the material to dry. The product may take up to 6 months to fully cure.

Warning: That Used Car You’re Looking At Might Be Under Recall

C

onsumer advocates have a warning for anyone considering buying a used car: the vehicle could be subject to a recall without you knowing it.

New research shows recalled vehicles have become more common at the nation’s largest used car chain – about 27 percent of vehicles inspected at 8 CarMax dealerships. That’s one of every four cars that were found to have an un-repaired recall issue in a new investigation by car safety advocates.

“These are not aesthetics. These are dangerous problems with the car,” said Jason Levine, Executive Director, Center for Auto Safety. Levine says the problems included faulty Takata air bags and GM ignition switches. In a statement, CarMax said they disclose open recalls before selling vehicles and have an easy way to check for a car’s recall status on their website. “Sometimes, those repairs are not even available. So, it’s a little bit deceptive and very unfair to say, well, disclosure fixes the problem. It doesn’t fix the problem and it doesn’t fix the car,” said Levine. CarMax and other used car sellers said they’re not in a position to make the fixes. They’re not required to. New cars that have been recalled can’t be sold, but no federal law stops the sale of used cars under recall. Two Democratic senators have introduced legislation that would make the practice illegal, but the bill has stalled. “We don’t allow people to advertise food that’s been recalled as safe. We don’t let people advertise cribs that have been recalled as safe. It’s not clear why you’re allowed to advertise cars that have recalls on them as safe,” said Levine. Before buying, shoppers can check a car’s recall status by entering its VIN number at safercar.gov.
