the art of organization MIAMI — There are few better examples of the marriage between organization and art than Closet Factorys’ design for this wall unit. Closet Factory had a vision: displaying their vast collection of art and art books around two large paintings. Collaborating with the clients and using the two paintings as centerpieces, we designed a 20 ft. by 20 ft. wall unit largely comprised of equally sized square cubbies. A rather pedantic design, admittedly, however, with the use of our imagination, we were able to transform the unit and breathe life into it with little touches. We varied the thickness of certain shelves. We installed a rolling ladder so books and objects higher up wouldn’t just be eye candy — they could be accessed and felt, adding substance to the otherwise visually stunning result. Of course, we had a little help. Closet Factory was lucky: our clients had spent years carefully curating their collection and had accumulated a number of interesting objects. With a minimal, clean design, we were able to appreciate the aesthetic value of the wall unit’s contents itself. The unobtrusive wall unit keeps the focus on the art and acts as a vessel, rather than a centerpiece. After all, there are two magnificent paintings. What goes into a unit can be just as important as the design of the system. As great as a design is, if you stuff it full of clothes or bring in clashing elements, it loses the identity of what it’s trying to convey. Curation is important. By designing around the art collection, Closet Factory designed a wall unit that was actually custom — it was built for their art collection — and was able to transcend expectations. No easy feat when priceless pieces are at play.

Survey: Only 1 in 5 Workers Get Enough Sleep Each Night
M
ost American workers are used to going to work sleep deprived.
Jon Hanford heads to work most days feeling a little tired. He says he gets about six hours a night if he’s lucky and about four if he’s not. Adults are supposed to get eight hours of sleep each night but a new CareerBuilder survey found only 1 in 5 workers actually reaches that goal. That means millions are working on too little sleep and most say it has an impact on their job. “It’s definitely harder to concentrate when you’re tired or your’re constantly having coffee to stay awake,” said attorney Annette Lalic. In the survey, people said being tired makes them less productive and less motivated. It also affects their memory and makes them crabby.
people said they dream about work. One in ten say it happens often. Lalic said they’re nightmares. “Occasionally, I’ll have nightmares that I forgot a deadline,” said Lalic. Kevin Judge said being tired makes the day move slower. “You feel like the whole day is going by and you can’t wait to get to sleep that night,” said Judge. But worrying you’re not getting enough sleep can make things worse. “You get stressed about not sleeping and it makes it harder to sleep again,” said Digital Producer Jon Hanford. Ironically, half of those surveyed said thinking about work keeps them up at night. The study also shows one in five workers has called in sick to get some sleep.
Many people can’t escape work, even when they’re sleeping. About 65 percent of

Social Media Focused
Millennials Turn To Botox
A
picture may be worth a thousand words but for some millennials on social media it defines who they are to their friends and followers. Carly Crosbie, 23, says she has no regrets getting botox.
“I’ve had botox in here, above my lip,” said pointing. “And I’ve had lip injections probably about six times.” Crosbie was 21 when she had her first procedure. She says social media was a big influence on her decision to book the appointment. “I think it influences me a lot to be honest. Everywhere you look there’s girls who look absolutely perfect skin, no wrinkles, nothing,” said Crosbie. She added that she knows other women her age who have also gone under the knife, often more than once. “Literally the first time I ever got it done I went back ten days later and I was like, ‘okay, I need more done’,” said Crosbie. Dermatologists say Crosbie is part of a growing trend of women, and men, who are influenced by social media to get this kind of work done. “If you look at this age group, they are social media environmentals. And they’re bringing in pictures, they’re influenced by what they see on TV,” said Dr. Earl Minuk. Minuk said sometimes their expectations can be a little unrealistic, often comparing themselves to celebrities who have millions of dollars of work done. “The problem is Kim Kardashian might have three syringes or three or four times the amount of product in her lips than what the individual in my office might be willing to spend to receive,” said Minuk. Minuk said no matter what their age, he stresses the importance of doing research, and knowing what kind of side effects are involved, before having any work done.

Active Authentication Might Replace Passwords Soon
T
he average computer user has 27 passwords and it can be tough to keep track of them all. Researchers are working on a solution.
It involves using sensors in our phone to track our unique biometrics from the way we swipe to the way we walk. All professor Vishal Patel did was ask a student to walk across campus at Rutger’s University then hand his phone to another student who walked back. The little difference in how they walked back was enough for the phone’s accelerometer to detect someone else was using the phone. “You had two different people walking in the same path but as you can see their signatures are very different,” said Patel. Researchers like Patel are trying to use biometrics to make our devices more secure with a process called “active authentication” that constantly and passively monitors the user. The phone was also trained to recognize the unique way its owner scrolls down the screen. So, let’s say you want to use another person’s phone but it will be able to tell just by you swiping the phone if you’re the owner of the phone or not. If you’re not, in just two swipes, it will lock.
Why isn’t this active authentication active yet? It could drain our batteries, or fail to work in certain settings. For example, the camera can’t see you in the dark and some of the methods, like tracking our pattern of life, could turn off users. “Once you have this information, you can sort of learn where the person will end up in the afternoon or at night,” said Patel. It’s something that some consider creepy. “It is creepy, but it is very powerful,” said Patel. Joseph Atick helped invent facial recognition technology 25 years ago but today, he says tracking users is so valuable to marketers that tech companies can’t be trusted to self-regulate their use of biometrics. “I believe it’s inevitable,” said Atick. “What guarantees me someone isn’t using my biometric data to do surveillance on me?” Questions like that will need to be answered soon. Researchers believe biometric data could start replacing our passwords in the next few years.

South Florida Survivor
Woman On A Roll To Find Cure For Spinal Cord Injuries
J
By Lauren Pastrana • lpastrana@cbs.com
essika Kattah loves to work out She always has. “I was very active and very fit before,” she said. “I was a gym rat. And I liked to run.” And she always will.
“I can do everything I did before, I just do it differently. I can’t dance with my legs, but I dance with my heart,” she said while twisting in her wheelchair at the adaptive gym at Markham Park in Sunrise. Jessika is paralyzed. She was first diagnosed with a benign lipoma tumor on her spine when she was 14 years old. “They removed 75 percent of it successfully. I went back to school as my able-bodied self,” she said. “Never thought of it again. I led my life not thinking it would ever come back.” But it did come back. When Jessika was 26, she noticed she was losing sensation in the lower half of her body. The tumor had grown to its original size. She had surgery again, but the outcome was different. “I didn’t want to believe I was paralyzed. In my head, I still thought I was going to recover. I didn’t want to believe the truth,” she said. Jessika says through intense rehab, she did walk again. Doctors were calling it a miracle. But over time, she found herself relying on her chair more.
“I went back and the MRI showed the tumor grew back a third time,” she explained. Jessika decided she wouldn’t let her spinal cord injury stop her from doing what she loves. She still works out, takes vacations to Disney World, and even scuba dives. “This whole process is 90 percent mental. If you’re not in a good mental state, it’s going to affect your physicality. Especially since we’re sitting all the time, it’s very important to stay active and keep our bodies, whatever we can do, keep it moving,” she said. Jessika keeps moving as a “Wings For Life” ambassador. The organization is determined to find a cure for spinal cord injuries. “Wings For Life is just to give us a second chance at life. Those of us that are paralyzed. We’re looking for a chance to walk again,” she said.
“I can do everything I did before, I just do it differently. I can’t dance with my legs, but I dance with my heart.” Jessika Kattah

Jessika has participated in the Wings For Life World Run since it started in 2014. “The second year of the world run I came in second place in my category… It was a 5k. 3 miles. It’s intense. I roll. But you can run you can walk,” she said. “My boyfriend, who happens to be in a chair as well, last year did 13 miles. Which is a half marathon.” Their team, which is named “It’s That Wheel Kind of Love”, is already recruiting members for next year’s event. Jessika blogs about her experiences in hopes of showing people living with paralysis they’re not alone. “I felt like that. Initially. You’re not alone. There are other people going through the same thing,” she told CBS4’s Lauren Pastrana. ” It’s easy to give up. It’s a lot harder to continue and fight. I think that’s what makes me a survivor. I never gave up.” Visit her website www.jessikakattah.com for more information on how you can sign up to join her team.

Parents, Doctors Warn Of
Fidget Spinner Dangers
F
idget spinners have become the hot toy of the summer, but now there are reports that they may present a choking hazard.
Shane Holtsclaw, a firefighter, recently had to rescue his own daughter Emma. “You don’t think that would ever happen,” he said. “It was just one of those freak accidents.” Like millions of kids, Emma has a fidget spinner. She was playing with it a couple of weeks ago when one of the metal bearings inside the toy came out and flew into her mouth. Emma started choking. Her dad gave her back blows until she started breathing. At the hospital, an x-ray revealed that she had ended up swallowing the metal piece which was about the size of a quarter. Her story is not the only one of something like this happening.
Houston a 10-year-old needed surgery to remove a bearing caught in her esophagus. In Oregon, Cayden Boyd also needed surgery after swallowing a fidget spinner bearing. “I think parents need to educate their children about the danger of these,” said Dr. Nina Shapiro. “I think they should not give these to younger children, children under six, and for older children, to really explain that these are toys but they also have risks, they should not be put in their mouths, they should not be taken apart.” Holtsclaw said he came forward with his daughters’ story for one reason. “I don’t want to have to see a parent go through what I went through, I don’t want a kid to choke,” he said. Experts say there are also smaller fidget spinners on the market now that can be dangerous for young children.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating incidents involving fidget spinners. Last month in

SUPPORTING THOUSANDS FOR BACK TO SCHOOL
SOME NEVER SLEEP IN BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK
Neighbors 4 Neighbors along with our partners at the Children’s Services Council of Broward County are working once again to make sure that kids in South Florida go back to school with more than just the essentials. With your contribution of just $35 dollars, a child in need will receive a backpack filled with supplies perfect for their grade level, a set of uniforms and a brand new pair of shoes. These children are selected from the neediest, by social workers in the school systems. Then, along with a team of community partners and volunteers, these excited kids, are given these supplies just in time to start the school year. In addition, the parents of these great kids are offered information on crucial resources especially for them, putting the whole family on track for the best school year yet. Last year with your help, 6000 children were assisted in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Join us again this year and make that number even higher. For more details and to make a tax-deducible donation, visit our website. www.neighbors4neighbors.org/back-to-school.
Inside Biscayne National Park are magical creatures like the majestic Spotted Eagle Ray, flying under the water’s surface like a bird. Reaching widths of over 11 ft, the Spotted Eagle Ray is one of the largest of the ray family. These rays are always active, swimming tirelessly, rarely resting like their cousins the Southern Stingray. They are coastal creatures, staying near the reefs of Biscayne National Park and other areas, where they hunt and breed. Bringing awareness to these creatures and the area they call home is a passion of Neighbors 4 Neighbors and our partners at the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation. Help us protect this area, understand its importance and become an advocate of your own. To find out more about our efforts, how you can volunteer or just visit this magical place in our own backyard, please visit our website at www.neighbors4neighbors. org/Biscayne-National-Park.

Study:
Red Onions Kill Cancer Cells And Promote Healthy Heart
C
an red onions help fight cancer? According to a new study published in Food Research International, yes, they can.
The study looked at five different types of onions grown in Ontario, Canada and found that Ruby Ring onions were the best at combating cancer cells. Red onions had been known to help with heart problems and diabetes because they had an abundance of quercetin. Now, they’ve been found to be rich in anthocyanin. “We found onions are excellent at killing cancer cells,” said Abdulmonem Murayyan, lead author, in a press release. “Onions activate pathways that encourage cancer cells to undergo cell death. They promote an unfavorable environment for cancer cells and they disrupt communication between cancer cells, which inhibits growth.” Their research tested how onions reacted with colon cancer cells as well as breast cancer cells, and they excelled at both. Murayyan wasn’t surprised to find that red onions would be the best type of onion to help fight cancer. “Anthocyanin is instrumental in providing color to fruits and vegetables, so it makes sense that the red onions, which are darkest in color, would have the most cancer-fighting power,” said Murayyan. Next, according to Murayyan, is to introduce onions to human trials.

Exercise May Not Be Completely Linked To Weight Loss
I
t’s possible that weight loss isn’t directly pushed by exercising, according to a study conducted by Loyola University of Chicago.
Working out promotes good health across the board but not necessarily weight loss. Losing weight includes burning calories, but when the body burns more calories, the hungrier it gets leading those lost calories being replaced. Studies have also confirmed that notion as well as burning calories through exercise doesn’t make up the majority of your body’s calorie burning. “Our study results indicate that physical activity may not protect you from gaining weight,” said Lara
Dugas, lead author an assistant professor of public health at the Loyola. The study examined 2,000 people from five countries over three years. They were measured by weigh ins and activity monitors. “Researchers did not find any significant relationships between sedentary time at the initial visit and subsequent weight gain or weight loss,” a press release from the University stated. “The only factors that were significantly associated with weight gain were weight at the initial visit, age and gender.”

Yoga May Be Best Prescription For Lower Back Pain Relief
N
ew research finds yoga can be the best prescription for millions of Americans suffering from chronic lower back pain.
Judith Zaborowski attends yoga class at Samamkaya Yoga in New York City. “I apparently have a spine that is covered with arthritis,” said Zaborowski. The 74-year-old says the practice helps ease her back pain. “I’m much more comfortable with movement,” said Zaborowski. Now a new study from Boston Medical Center backs that up. Researchers looked at more than 300 low-income patients with chronic lower back pain. Some took yoga classes designed for back pain once a week while others did physical therapy. “We found the yoga was as effective as physical therapy for reducing pain intensity, improving people’s physical function, and perhaps most importantly reducing pain medication use,” said study author Dr. Rob Saper.
Instructor Debby Green said yoga cultivates balance in the body, which can relieve back pain. “We have the equipment and we use it and it’s really helpful, but you could do it without equipment and yes everybody can do it,” said Debby Green with the Samamkaya Yoga Back Care & Scoliosis Collective. Carol Shapiro has scoliosis and has suffered with back pain for much of her life. “When you’re in severe pain – I’m really not one for medication, it is truly debilitating,” said Shapiro. She said yoga has allowed her to be much more mobile. “I feel really strong powerful, connected,” said Shapiro. It’s movements students say are helping them physically and mentally. Researchers say based on this study, they hope more doctors will recommend yoga to treat chronic back pain.

Report:
Not Everyone May Benefit From Fish Oil
M
illions of people take fish oil supplements in the U.S. but a new report from the American Heart Association shows not everyone may benefit.
Forty-four year old Anurag Mehta checks in with his cardiologist every few months since suffering a heart attack at a young age. “I had high cholesterol and I was 33 so I kind of, more of less, ignored it. I’d gotten quite sedentary in terms of lifestyle,” said Mehta. Doctor Ravi Dave put him on daily Omega-3 fish oil supplements. Now, the American Heart Association said the supplements may have lifesaving benefits for heart attack patients like Mehta and as well, as heart failure patients. “And they found evidence in patients with congestive heart failure, a weakened heart muscle, it helps reduce their risk of death and reduce their risk of repeat hospitalization,” said Dave. When it comes to the average person, the association said it cannot recommend fish oil to prevent heart disease because there is not enough research to support the idea. Fish oil supplements are very popular in the U.S. with 19 million adults taking them. Doctor Dave recommends fish oil for all his heart patients, especially if they don’t eat fish. “Fish oil is an easy way to supplement your diet that may be lacking in those necessary ingredients,” said Dave. “I’ve never stopped. For 11 years, I’ve been taking it every day,” said Mehta. Mehta credits fish oil and lifestyle changes for keeping him healthy since his heart attack. Experts recommend heart patients talk to their doctor before starting any supplement.

Scientists Opt For Fish Skin To Treat Severe Burns
R
esearchers in Brazil are experimenting with a new treatment for severe burns using the skin of tilapia fish, an unorthodox procedure they say can ease the pain of victims and cut medical
costs.
Frozen pig skin and human tissue have long been placed on burns to keep them moist and allow the transfer of collagen, a protein that promotes healing, but Brazil’s public hospitals lack human and pig skin supplies. Instead, gauze bandage, which needs regular changing – often painfully – is the norm. Tilapia is abundant in Brazil’s rivers and fish farms, which are expanding rapidly as demand grows for the mildly flavoured freshwater fish.
Scientists at the Federal University of Ceara in northern Brazil have found that tilapia skin has moisture, collagen and disease resistance at levels comparable to human skin, and can aid in healing. The tilapia treatment can speed up healing by several days and reduces the need for pain medication, the Brazilian researchers say, adding that the treatment costs 75 percent less than the sulfadiazine cream typically used on Brazilian burn patients. The researchers hope the treatment will prove commercially viable and encourage businesses to process tilapia skin for medical use.

What is Genesis?
D
r. Ferdinand Cabrera, Owner and Medical Director of Genesis Health Institute, first recognized the need to incorporate a more preventative style of medicine while practicing as a board-certified internist for over 20 years. When the opportunity to exclusively practice functional, integrative and anti-aging medicine arose, it was just a matter of time before Genesis Health Institute was born. Genesis... “the beginning.” Our mission at Genesis Health Institute is to promote the healthiest and highest quality of life for our patients. This simple premise translates into one common goal for all our patients including men and women, regardless of age, weight or current medical status. Our practice works synergistically between medical anti-aging therapies and aesthetic age management treatments that are focused on having our patient’s look and feel their very best! This year we celebrate our 10th anniversary and we’re proud to note that we were the first full-service, anti-aging facility to open in the community during a time when many people encountered very tough financial situations. That is why we are now, and have always been, very conscious of our patients’ financial situation. Even though there are many new anti-aging centers, medical spas and aesthetic centers opening around us, we still place a large focus on value, financial integrity and remain the price leader in our industry. Along with our ten years of experience, we have acquired the expertise that cannot be found in those new centers opening around us. Just check out what patients are saying about us online. Our reputation speaks for itself! At Genesis Health Institute we offer a wide variety of medical therapies. Our most popular being Testosterone, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), Growth Hormone (HGH) and Intravenous (IV) Nutrition Therapies. Study:
Being Drunk Doesn’t Change Your Personality
B
laming last night’s actions or decisions on excessive alcohol consumption is commonplace and a moderately forgivable offense. However, there isn’t much science to back up this conventional wisdom. Booze doesn’t alter your personality, it simply exaggerates it, according to a study published in Clinical Psychological Science. In the study, 156 participants were studied. Some were given non-alcoholic drinks and others were given drinks designed to bring the blood alcohol content to .09, which would be over the legal limit to drive. The participants, as well as observers watching a video feed, reported their observations. The drinkers reported a lower rate of agreeability and openness to experience but higher levels of extroversion. But, the observers observed only a difference in extroversion. “We were surprised to find such a discrepancy between drinkers’ perceptions of their own alcohol-induced personalities and how observers perceived them,” said Rachel Winograd, lead researcher and psychological scientist of the University of Missouri. “Participants reported experiencing differences in all factors of the Five Factor Model of personality, but extraversion was the only factor robustly perceived to be different across participants in alcohol and sober conditions.” The next step, according to Winograd, is for research to continue somewhere outside of a lab and in natural settings, such as bars and parties. “Of course, we also would love to see these findings replicated outside of the lab – in bars, at parties, and in homes where people actually do their drinking,” said Dr. Winograd. “Most importantly, we need to see how this work is most relevant in the clinical realm and can be effectively included in interventions to help reduce any negative impact of alcohol on peoples’ lives.”

Consumer Alert:
Importance Of Wiping Your Smartphone Before Letting It Go
T
here’s an important consumer alert out for anyone who owns a cellphone.
Another phone had pictures and the owner’s name in a document. Serapiglia says that type of information can be used to steal your identity.
Millions of smartphones are being purchased each year, which means millions of smartphones are being traded, sold, donated or discarded. Those phones hold lots of important data.
“It’s a treasure trove for identity theft. Thieves are trying to build a story around you, so they can impersonate you, so they can open accounts in your name and make a good story,” says Serapiglia.
It’s important to make sure those phones are wiped clean of information before they are turned over to someone else.
Before you give your phone away or sell it, Serapiglia says you need to do a few things to clear it.
Research being conducted at Saint Vincent College shows that not everyone is as careful as they should be when it comes to getting rid of phones. “The phones of today are more powerful than the laptops of eight years ago,” says Dr. Anthony Serapiglia, assistant professor of computing and information systems at Saint Vincent College. “For most people, their primary computing device is their phone, not their desktop or a laptop, so their entire lives are on this.” As part of a research project, Serapiglia and students at Saint Vincent College tested 80 phones that they purchased for just $83 from Goodwill’s online auction site. Using software that anyone can buy, they were able to extract data from 47 of the 80 phones. Pictures, text messages, emails and documents were just some of the items recovered from phones that had been given away by their owners. “We found one that had been damaged and donated down in Alabama. It belonged to a drug dealer. There were drug deals on it, prostitution and gambling all in emails and text messages,” says Serapiglia.
Here’s what he recommends: • Remove all added storage (MicroSD cards) • If you have not already encrypted the phone, do so. It will only take a couple of minutes. Again, it’s built into iOS for iPhones and Android after KitKat. • Remove the SIM Card if possible. • Perform the factory reset. Each phone is different – check the websites for your manufacturer or your cell phone provider. A reset should take less than five minutes. • Set up the phone again and then transfer several large data files to it. Use files that contain no identifying data on you. Movie files are easiest because they are large. Move as much over as will fill the entire storage capacity of the phone. Doing this will ensure that the previous data stored on the phone is entirely overwritten by new data that has nothing to do with you.

Lauren’s List:
Helpful Hints Before You Travel
S
By Lauren Pastrana • lpastrana@cbs.com
ummer travel season is here! Some aviation experts are predicting a record 234.1 million passengers will travel the world on United Statesbased airlines between June 1
and August 31.
We put so much thought into booking flights and hotels and packing our bags, that we sometimes overlook important things at home before we hit the road. Today’s “Lauren’s List” has some helpful hints of what you should be doing any time you leave town for a few days or more. 1. Give Your Bank Notice- No one wants to hear those dreadful words, “I’m sorry. Your card was denied.” Especially not while on vacation. If you planned ahead, you should have plenty of cash, but you can avoid that headache all together if you just call your bank ahead of time to let them know you will have some unusual activity from a specific location that isn’t your hometown. This is especially important when traveling abroad, but even just across state lines. My card was waived for fraud once because of a $10 bagel and coffee in New York City! 2. Unplug- We usually try to unplug while on vacation by stepping away from our smartphones and tablets. But in this case, I mean you should literally unplug those appliances and electronics that could be sucking up power while you’re out of town. Kitchen gadgets, TVs and DVD players
don’t need to be plugged in when they’re not in use. 3. Keep Up Appearances- Make sure to put your mail on hold or have someone set to pick it up. If your grass is due to be cut, make sure the lawn service still shows up as planned. Also, rather than just leaving your porch light on at all hours, set a timer so it goes on and off at the usual times. Another interesting tip, security experts actually suggest leaving some blinds partially open. If all the blinds are closed, it looks like no one is home. Just make sure you can’t see any expensive electronics through the blinds you do leave open. 4. Prep Food For Homecoming: This may seem counter-intuitive, but now that I’ve read up on it, I’m definitely doing this for my next trip. Definitely get rid of anything that will expire while you’re gone, but it stinks to get home to an empty fridge after a long travel day. You probably don’t want to cook, or spend even more money on take out, but if you have a meal prepped, frozen and ready to just throw in the oven, it will definitely make for a nice homecoming. Even better, have some frozen breakfast ready for the next day too, so you don’t have to wake up extra early just to go to the store. What’s on your list of things to do before going on vacation? Tell me on Facebook or Twitter. If you have an idea for a future “Lauren’s List”, send it to: lpastrana@cbs.com.

Prepaid Debit Cards To Be Awarded Same Safeguards As Traditional Ones
M
illions of people without bank accounts rely on prepaid debit card to pay their bills. However, those cards don’t protect you from fraud like regular credit and debit cards do.
Living without a bank account, Alvin Prasad has his paycheck directly deposited onto a prepaid debit card. But when he went to access his money, Prasad said, “I felt sick to my stomach.” He says someone fraudulently drained his card, leaving him with no way to pay rent. “I’m going to get kicked out. I’m going to need a new place to live,” he said. When he called the card company, he said they told him there wasn’t much they could do. “I had no idea what to do. I’ve never been in a situation like this,” Prasad said. Credit and debit cards offer protection from fraud. Prepaid debit cards, used by 23 million Americans, don’t have those same protections.
But that is set to change next year. “Now, a new rule from the Consumer Protection Bureau will make sure prepaid cards are safe to use like debit cards,” a Consumer Protection Bureau video states. The rules would force financial institutions to investigate fraudulent claims tied to prepaid cards. And money will generally be protected if the card is lost, stolen or wrongly charged. “They extend a lot of the same coverage that you see with credit cards or with debit cards,” said Matt Schulz with CreditCards.com Even though the rules don’t take effect until April of 2018, Prasad’s card company did return his money, and he was able to stay in his apartment. Prasad isn’t sure how criminals were able to drain his account. The new rules were supposed to take effect in October of this year, but were pushed back six months to give the industry more time to comply.

HELPING KIDS COPE Four-Legged Grief Counselors Help Kids Cope At Tomorrow’s Rainbow
L
By Rick Folbaum • rfolbaum@cbs.com
ogan Whitaker is a painter with a purpose. His older brother, Luke, is one as well as he shows off his creation, the word ‘Mom” painted big and bright.
Logan and Luke met CBS4’s Anchor Rick Folbaum at Tomorrow’s Rainbow, a small non-profit organization which provides free support to children grieving the death of a loved one with the help of miniature horses and other small farm animals to comfort the children. Logan and Luke come every two weeks. “We love coming,” said Luke. “Because I want to see the horsies,” said Logan. And because, “It helps us grieve,” said Luke. “It helps us. My mother passed away,” he explained to Rick. Luke and Logan’s mother, Rebecca, died suddenly last year of a massive heart attack. Their dad moved the family to South Florida where other family lives. Their aunt found Tomorrow’s Rainbow and it’s really helping. “This place helps me feel better because other kids have a mom who passed away, and we’re not alone,” said Logan. Luke agreed. “It helps you feel like you’re not alone.”
Abby Mosher founded Tomorrow’s Rainbow in 2003 after the death of her husband. She struggled to help her son and found there were no grief centers in her community, so she opened one using therapy animals to help the kids open up. It’s really hard for the children to tell their story in the first person. So when they’re grooming their horse, I can ask them, ‘How’s Boo doing?’ And they can say, ‘He misses his mom’, or ‘He got into a fight with his dad,’ or ‘He had a fight at school.’” Abby explained the kids are really talking about themselves. Tomorrow’s Rainbow gets all of its funding from private and corporate donations. There are over 200 active volunteers that help 500 kids and families each year, free of charge. Every year, Tomorrow’s Rainbow hosts an event called “Hope Floats.” The idea is to decorate paper boats and dedicate them to lost loved ones. And just as the children are not alone in their grief, the boats form a flotilla, sailing down Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal in a powerful show of love, loss and hope. Hope for Luke, Logan and all of those who are working through grief.

Vets Want You To Know How To
Prevent The Spread Of Dog Flu
W
ith summer travel on many pet owners’ minds, vets are asking owners to take precautions and make sure their pets are vaccinated against the dog flu. Doctor Mark Hayes said the canine flu presents itself like kennel cough, making it difficult to identify and it spreads easily.
“It’s usually transmitted dog to dog but it can also linger on clothing from animals that have been handled so the human that has handled that dog, their clothing could stay infected for 24 hours,” said Hayes. Doctor Hayes says vaccination is key to protect your dog. The shots target both the H3N2 strain and the H3N8 strain that have been infecting dogs across the country. The vaccinations are only effective if they are followed up by a booster shot. Doctor Hayes said timing may be a problem. “We are in the midst of summer so it’s a little bit of a problem because if you have a vacation scheduled in the next week or two, even if we vaccinate your dog today, we can’t get that booster in for three weeks,” said Hayes. Researchers analyzing the dog flu said the strains have the potential to infect other animals as well. “It has been shown to infect cats and perhaps ferrets,” said Veterinarian Melissa Kennedy. Doctor Hayes said if you’re going on vacation, take precautions now to keep your dog and other pets healthy. “Plan ahead. If you know that you’re planning to board your dog in the coming months, it would be best to start now do the vaccine, get your booster in two to three weeks, and then hopefully your dog will be protected when it goes to the kennel,” said Hayes. This comes as Florida health officials confirmed a dozen cases of H3N2 canine influenza in Florida, saying it spread among animals at two dog shows.

Taste Of The Town:
French Eatery From Dubai & London Makes Its Way To Miami
By Lisa Petrillo • lpetrillo@wfor.cbs.com
F
rom the owners of Zuma and Coya, comes the third international concept restaurant to Brickell Bay Drive – La Petite Maison. It’s one of London’s and Dubai’s most popular restaurants.
The 4,600 square foot space with an eyecatching oversized bar is a blend of casual elegance with a homey feel. “We wanted something that was simple and timeless and based on the original La Petite Maison”, said Executive Chef Raphael Duntoye. Duntoye, who is also part owner, knew Miami was a natural place for it. “After being very successful in London and in Dubai I felt that there was only one place to go. We had Zuma here and knowing how well they did, we thought why not,” he said. Back in the kitchen, Chef Raphael leads his team, cooking what he calls simple French food. No heavy sauces. Just clean and fresh.
“Most of the dishes you find, is that we don’t really do too much to the food. We don’t play around with it. We get the most fresh food we can find and serve it almost naturally. We do things to enhance the flavor. It’s light, not heavy,” Chef said. It’s experiencing fine dining without the attitude. There’s no fancy flowers on the table. Diners will find an edible centerpiece of fresh tomatoes lemon, oil and salt. Something they can slice into before they even look at the menu. “It’s a good way to start. It’s like a cleanser,” Chef Raphael said. First up was a side dish of asparagus – simply blanched and served with a shallot dressing and marinated goat cheese. “That’s a breath of fresh air, because it’s not a soggy asparagus, which I cannot stand,” said CBS4’s Lisa Petrillo, after tasting. “It’s the best asparagus I’ve ever had in my whole life. I’m not kidding!”

Next up – warm prawns served out of the shell. “What I believe is the food is better if chef has very little to do with it. This is prawns with a nice olive oil, lemon juice and salt,” said chef. “It’s super light and lemon and fresh and it’s a warm prawn – not cold, not hot. It’s the perfect temperature. It’s like a dessert prawn,” Petrillo said after tasting the dish. Next was the Yellowtail Carpaccio with guacamole with shallots and cucumber. “It’s so fresh and that citrus dressing and a little bit of guacamole, hello? It’s very special,” said Petrillo. To sip, try their terrific Tomatini cocktails – La Petite’s version of a lighter Bloody Mary. You can also try chef’s famous grilled Colorado Lamb Chops, seared to perfection and topped with what he called Aubergine caviar. “It’s simple, but elegant with so much flavor,” Petrillo said. Sellers: Here’s How to Update Your Home With Looks Buyers Love Before you list, tweak your home decor and finishes to up your odds of attracting a sale.
By Kerrie Kelly Content provided by zillow.com
W
hen you’re putting your home on the market, you want it looking its best. You know you’ll need to clean and declutter, but what about making cosmetic updates?
Investing in a new look for your home might be well worth the effort. The recent Zillow Paint Colors That Sell Analysis reported that certain paint colors in specific rooms can impact the sale price of a home. And many buyers perk up when they see terms like granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and subway tile in a home’s listing. Let’s take a look at ways to work these trends into your home for maximum impact. More natural, less fussy Today’s buyer is looking for fresh and natural design elements that easily blend between varying styles, from tailored and traditional to ultra-cool and modern. Zillow discovered that shades of cool blue spoke to these home buyers, and offered a semi-blank canvas for them to put their own spin on. A natural blue tone also looks best in listing photos and videos.
Many elements impact a home’s value While Zillow’s research shows that applying a fresh coat of paint to your home helps boost its value, there are many more components that impact a buyer’s willingness to pull out their checkbook.
the countertop or flooring often breathes new life into a space. If you don’t want to dip into construction territory, smaller scale projects like swapping out hardware, adding artwork, or installing stylish storage are all great fixes that signal your home’s been well cared for. Dip your toe We always tell clients who are nervous to jump into a new color or pattern this simple piece of advice: Dip your toe in and try it out. As Zillow found, shades of blue are the go-to for home buyers today. However, that doesn’t mean you have to splash navy blue paint across your walls. If you’re staging your home to sell, or just want to see what the color looks like in your environment, start small with throw pillows, an area rug, or window coverings. These decorative accents are small but mighty, and may offer just the right amount of impact to boost your home’s value. Now that homeowners are gravitating toward fresh, bright and clean coloration, we can expect hues of blue and gray to offer the tranquility potential buyers are looking for. Paired with classic white countertops and cabinets, these shades complement nearly every kitchen and bathroom, making your next home sale a slam dunk — especially if sky blue or periwinkle is involved!
In addition to paint, other elements of the kitchen and bath are important to keep in mind. Updating

Government Backed Mortgage Programs
A benefit to consumers? SOUTH FLORIDA - For years potential home buyers have depended on their financial institutions for their portfolio based lending when it comes to the purchase or refinance of their home. This traditional process, often lasting over 120 days, would result in the customer being declined, mostly due to bank required credit overlays. Newly released mortgage programs, including government backed programs from Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA and VA, allow these same consumers, many of whom have a credit score as low as 600 and a down payment as little as 5%, to bypass their financial institutions and go directly to the source for a loan up to five million dollars.
“M
ost consumers are not aware direct jumbo loan and government mortgage programs are even available.” says John Barry, Mortgage Lending Director at the Government Loan Assistance Program. With real estate prices seemingly leveling off and interest rates at an all-time low, consumers are looking to re-enter the market but are doing so with caution. John Barry adds “Our last study shows approximately 9 out of every 10 individuals who are declined for a mortgage or a refinance from their current banks actually qualify for one
of our programs.” In most Metropolitan areas, such as South Florida, the banks responsible for the large number of consumers being declined for a mortgage program are usually the largest: • • • • • • •
Bank of America Chase Wells Fargo HSBC Suntrust Bank United BB&T
When asked what would be the greatest benefit for a consumer to seek out these newly released
mortgage programs Barry replied “It’s simple, getting approved. Our mortgage programs are specifically designed to approve individuals, many with imperfect credit scores and limited down payments, to secure a low-fixed rate loan of any amount up to 5 million dollars”. In addition, the Government Loan Assistance Program offers a complimentary telephone pre-qualification process. Your Lease Is Up? Here Are 3 Good Reasons to Renew Should you stay or should you go? Think twice before packing up and moving to a new place. By Jennifer Lyons Content provided by zillow.com
I
f you’re approaching the end of your lease, it’s easy to think of reasons to move — new neighborhood, change of scenery, different amenities. But there are many compelling reasons why staying put might be a better choice.
Take these three considerations into account before packing up and making the move. Dollars and cents From security deposits to moving supplies to renting a truck or hiring movers — and even time off work to get unpacked and settled — moving is never cheap. Moving to a new place can cost renters between $2,900 and $4,500 — not including the rent itself, according to Nathan Miller, founder and CEO at Rentec Direct, a company that creates software for landlords and property managers. “And that’s just our sample size in Portland, Oregon,” he notes. “When you consider bigger cities like San Francisco, Seattle, or New York, it could be two to three times that amount, and many people don’t have that much cash available.” Deposits and move-in fees can be double or triple the monthly rent. And while many tenants count on getting the full deposit back to put toward a new deposit, it’s rare to get it all back, even if you’ve taken great care of your unit. “In many cities, landlords aren’t required to refund your deposit for 30 days, so you can’t immediately use that money for your new place,” Miller notes. The ball’s in your court If you decide to move, your property manager has to spend money on advertising to fill the vacancy, plus pay at least two to four weeks of carrying costs until a new tenant moves in and starts paying rent.
Landlords paying attention to their bottom line would rather keep you — especially if you’ve been a good tenant that pays on time — than spend time and money finding someone new. This alone puts you in a great negotiating position, so ask for a discount on your rent, better lease terms, or complimentary amenities like parking. While you negotiate the terms of your new lease, keep this in mind: Many cities and towns put limits on how much a landlord can increase your rent at one time. And given that rental prices are rapidly increasing in many big cities, the new rent your current landlord is proposing may very well be lower than what you’d pay somewhere new. A bird in the hand If you have a good rapport with your landlord, like your neighbors, and are generally satisfied with the amenities your community offers, it may not be worth rolling the dice on somewhere new. “Going into a new community, you don’t always get the personal connection you’re used to,” says Kristen Gucwa, executive vice president of marketing at Richman Signature Properties, a leader in luxury apartment communities. “If you already have a connection with the front desk worker or the maintenance supervisor who always comes right over to help you, there’s a huge benefit there.” Miller agrees. “If you like your landlord now, there’s absolutely no guarantee you’re going to like the new one. You’re giving up something you know for a complete unknown.” If your lease end date is approaching, take some time to crunch the numbers and consider the less tangible pros and cons. You just might find that staying put is the right choice — nobody likes to move, anyway.

Grill and Smoker Buying Guide A gas, charcoal or electric grill lets you prepare easy outdoor meals on your deck or patio. Pair it with a compact smoker to take your outdoor cooking to the next level. Ready to step into the master griller category? Add the right cooking accessories and tackle breakfast, lunch or dinner with ease. Content provided by lowes.com
Gas Grills Gas grills — fueled by liquid propane (LP) or natural gas — make outdoor cooking almost as simple as cooking in your kitchen. Flip on the burners and after a few minutes of preheating, you’re ready to grill. • Most include an ignition feature for easy lighting. • Available features like side burners, prep shelves, warming shelves, tool hooks and even wireless temperature monitoring put all your outdoor cooking needs in a convenient package. • Greater temperature control means you can cook food quicker and more evenly. • Some gas grill come with a fuel tank gauge so you know how much propane you have before you start. • Lowe’s offers a quick and convenient propane tank exchange. • Gas burns cleaner and is less expensive per use than charcoal. • Some models have an option for direct hookup to natural gas. With no tanks to replace, you don’t have to worry about running out of fuel in the middle of cooking. Infrared Grilling Some gas grills are equipped with infrared burners as an additional cooking feature. Infrared heat comes from a radiant heat source rather than hot rising air (convection) used in conventional grilling. Infrared elements heat up faster and therefore cook faster. If you’re new to infrared grilling, experiment, follow directions carefully and keep an eye on your food until you master the technique. Good to Know: What’s a BTU? A gas grill’s heat output is rated in British thermal units (BTU). Because this measurement is related to the size of the burner, it can be difficult to compare BTU ratings of different grills. A large grill with a high BTU rating cooks at a similar temperature as a smaller grill with a lower BTU. The ability of a grill to reach and sustain cooking temperature is more critical than how hot it can get. To ensure the best cooking performance, look for infrared burners that help to seal in juices.
Good to Know: A standard propane tank holds 20 pounds of fuel. Depending on the cooking temperature and number of burners working, a full tank usually lasts nine hours. Charcoal Grills Charcoal grills use charcoal briquettes, wood or a combination of both to produce a more intense, smoked flavor. • Sizes range from small models great for tailgating or camping to large grill / smoker combinations. • Available features such as temperature gauges, shelf space, tool hooks, lid rests and wheels maximize convenience. • Higher-end charcoal grills have air vents or dampers to control cooking temperatures and igniters to eliminate the need for lighter fluid. • Most charcoal grills are metal, but ceramic is also an option. Ceramic grills provide greater temperature control and moisture retention, which produces tender and juicy food. Good to Know: Cooking over charcoal requires time. Depending on grill size and the number and type of briquettes, you should be ready to cook 15 to 30 minutes after lighting. Electric Grills Electric grills offer quick long-running operation but must plug into a power outlet. • If you live in an apartment or an area that can’t accommodate charcoal or gas, you can still cook out with an electric grill. • Some electric grills offer infrared cooking that uses radiant heat to eliminate flare-ups and prevent hot or cold spots on the grill. • You can produce some excellent cookout cuisine using ceramic briquettes and a good marinade.

Smokers Smokers cook “low and slow,” typically between 225 and 275 degrees F for several hours. Ribs, brisket, pork, poultry and fish are traditional favorites, but vegetables, fruit and even cheese are also possibilities. • Available cooking areas range from 250 square inches to over 1000 square inches, allowing you to cook up to 50 pounds of food at a time. • A wood chip box or water pan allows cooking with different flavors. • Some models offer a dual-use design for smoking or grilling. • Electric models with w-fi capability to let you set up and monitor your meal with ease. • Digital controls, temperature and fuel gauges, meat probes, timers, slide-out shelves, viewing windows, wheels and wood-chip loading systems are available to make smoking food a no-fail experience. • Removable racks, shelves and drip pans mean less mess when it’s time to clean up. Electric smokers can operate as long as you have power, but you need to keep them close to an outlet. Gas smokers are more portable and heat quickly. Look for models with gauges to help you keep them fueled during the cooking time. Electric and gas smokers heat wood chips or pellets to produce the smoky taste. Charcoal and wood smokers are often larger and less portable but offer a flavor that’s hard to beat. More compact, vertical charcoal smokers are also available.

Textured Concrete SteppingStones Content provided by lowes.com
Instructions Step 1: Mark the concrete forming tube 2 inches from one end and carefully saw a ring from the tube. Check the shape of the ring to make sure it forms a circle -- not an oval. Repeat for each stepping-stone you plan to make. Good to Know: An easy way to mark the tube is to stand a factory end on a flat surface.
Rest a permanent marker on a piece (or pieces) of scrap wood cut long enough to raise the marker tip 2 inches above the work surface. Then guide the marker around the tube to create an even line. Step 2: Tear off 4-inch-long pieces of duct tape and use them to tape the outside of the tube ring to the blank corrugated sign. Overlap the tape pieces to make sure the concrete won’t
concrete to cure another 24 hours. leak out. Tape additional rings to the sign as space allows. (You can clean and reuse the sign when you’re finished.) Step 3: Wearing eye and breathing protection plus rubber gloves, gradually add water to about 30 pounds of concrete mix (for two stepping-stones at a time) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When squeezed, a handful of wet concrete should hold its shape but not crumble when pinched. Good to Know: Adding extra water to the mixture may make it easier to pour it into the mold but will weaken the finished project.
Step 6: Remove the duct tape from the corrugated sign and pull the stepping-stone away. Use a utility knife to score the ring from edge to edge and peel off the form. Allow the stone to cure an additional 48 hours before using. Good to Know: Concrete will not stick to the corrugated sign or rubber mat, allowing you to use them to make more stepping-stones. When you’re finished, scrub the mat clean and use it around the house. Experiment with Different Textures Step 1: For an alternative to the wavy-line texture of the mat shown in the previous section, select one with squares of alternating lines. Step 2: Many objects can be used to create textures, as long as they don’t stick to the concrete. For example, cut lengths of 1/2-inch nylon twisted rope long enough to span the mold ring. Place them side by side on the moist concrete and press them into the surface by hand. Allow them to remain until the concrete cures for one day and then remove. Step 3: For a bolder design, select a doormat with a cut-out design. As with the other mats, allow it to remain pressed into the concrete for 24 hours. Step 3: Not all the surface needs to be covered with a design. Here, just a corner of a doormat with a bold design was pressed into the concrete.

Step 4: Pour concrete into one of the rings until the mixture extends just above the edge of the ring. Gently shake or bounce the concrete mold as you fill it to force out any air bubbles. Step 5: Press the design side of the rubber mat firmly into the top of the form and hold it there. Leave the mat in place for 24 hours before peeling it free; then allow the

Square-Foot Gardening:
Minimal Space, Maximum Results
U
Content provided by lowes.com
rban gardeners and others with limited space are gardening by the square foot.
Discover how much fresh produce you can grow in a small amount of space. Here are some tips to make the most of every inch of ground. The best way to maximize your harvest is to give vegetables a happy home. That means welldrained soil with 6-8 hours of sunlight each day. A raised bed is a great solution because it avoids potential drainage problems and warms up faster in spring, allowing for an earlier start. Fill the bed with a rich, light soil mix. A general all-purpose recipe includes 1 part perlite and 2 parts each of topsoil, peat moss, and compost. Mix it well and remember to fertilize plants -- either with a watersoluble fertilizer twice a month or a slow-release granular fertilizer once or twice a season. Or buy a prepackaged mix such as Sta-Green Flower and
Vegetable Garden Soil, which contains a slowrelease fertilizer. Once the bed is filled with a soil mix, fill it with plants. When you have a rich, fluffy soil mix that is never compacted by foot traffic, you can space plants closer together than plant tag recommendations. Use a trellis or obelisk to utilize vertical growing space. And let trailing plants spill over the sides to save space for companions in the planting bed. You can maximize space in a variety of ways. A classic practice for vegetable growers is to sow radishes and carrots together. Once the radishes are harvested (in as little as 30 days), carrots have more space to grow and mature. You can also plant by the season. For instance, start with onions and peas in spring, replace them with beans and eggplants in summer, and finish off with lettuce and spinach in fall.

How to Prepare for Severe Weather When severe weather hits, the primary concern is for your family’s safety. But your house is important too, and it requires protection even though you may be evacuating. Plan ahead to protect your home and family before a potentially devastating tornado, hurricane or other severe weather event occurs. Content provided by lowes.com

Consider a Storm Shelter If you’re in an area that’s particularly vulnerable to severe weather events, such as tornadoes or hurricanes, consider installing a storm shelter. These impenetrable steel shelters are resistant to leakage and will protect you from high winds and flying debris. They’re fitted with heavy-duty steel slide bolts and an in-swing door to ensure that you’re able to get out even if debris has fallen on top of the shelter. Storm shelters can be fitted with lighting and a power source. Shelters can be used in residential or commercial areas. Depending on your needs, they can be built above ground or in ground, inside or outside of your home. They come in various sizes to accommodate 6-16 people. Also consider your situation. For those in a tornado-prone area, the footprint of the storm shelter can be smaller because you’re not in it for as long as you would be in a hurricane. Some units are equipped with steel outriggers on each end of the shelter and at the bottom to prevent the unit from floating, which is ideal for hurricane-prone areas. Prepare Your Roof Ensure that your roof is in good shape prior to severe weather. Here are a few precautions that you can take: • Disconnect and remove any television antennas or satellite dishes. • Remove roof turbines and cover the holes. Otherwise, high winds could remove them, leaving a gaping hole for rain to enter your home. • Check for loose or damaged shingles. Seal around flashings, chimneys or vent pipes. • Check for loose and clogged gutters and downspouts. Backed-up gutters can send water flowing into your home in the event of heavy rains. Cover the Windows If you live in an area vulnerable to hurricanes, consider installing storm shutters. They’re available in several different types, and they’ll go a long way toward keeping the damaging wind and rain from entering through your home’s windows. Furthermore, they may reduce your homeowner’s insurance premium. If you don’t have storm shutters and a storm is on its way, putting plywood over your windows will help prevent water from getting in or flying objects from breaking the
glass. For the best protection, the plywood should be at least 5/8 of an inch thick. Secure the Doors Steel entry doors provide the best protection for your home. Double doors and French doors are most vulnerable to high winds. No matter what type of door you have, a hurricane panel is your best option to keep damage at a minimum. You can also nail plywood over the doors to help keep out water and debris. Don’t nail yourself inside the house, in case you need to evacuate the area on short notice. If you have double doors that have no structural member in the center between them, install special hardware to secure the doors where they meet. Bolts that secure the door into the framing at both the top and bottom greatly increase the door’s strength. Wedge a dowel or a piece of broom handle into the track of sliding glass doors to prevent them from coming loose in heavy winds. Provide stiffening support for garage doors. The pressure from wind increases with the door’s size, and wide doors in particular need bracing for stability during high winds. Make your own vertical supports by nailing two 2x4s together and attaching them to the inside of your garage door with L brackets. Keep the Yard Clear of Flying Debris Now that you’ve focused on the house, it’s time to look at your yard. Here are a few tasks that you can do to prevent flying debris from damaging your home. • Trim back large tree limbs. Thinning out the branches to allow wind to pass through will also reduce the potential for damage to the tree itself. Remove dead or damaged branches. • Lawn furniture, ornaments, toys, grills and exterior potted plants should be taken inside. • Anything that can’t be brought inside should be tied down. Sheds, doghouses, play houses, swing sets, and boat trailers should be secured with tie-downs, turnbuckles and cable or stout rope. • Concrete tie-down spaces are a good home improvement in areas susceptible to hurricanes. If you don’t have concrete-mounted tie-downs when the weather threatens, screw-type tie-downs secured

deep in the ground must suffice. If you live in a mobile home, it’s particularly important that you inspect and repair your home’s tie-downs. Protect Cars, Trucks and Boats If you live in a low-lying area and a hurricane is coming, move your car, truck or boat to higher ground, preferably to an enclosed garage or warehouse. If you must leave a boat behind, don’t leave it in the water. If the boat is left outside, anchor the trailer tongue of a trailered boat to a firm spot on the ground. Lash the boat to the trailer and let some air out of the tires. Add water for weight, but make sure you keep it below engine level. Stow all loose gear (outriggers, canvas tops, etc.) and remove electronics and other valuables to avoid damage and theft. Cover the boat to keep out additional water and debris. Have an Evacuation Plan Communication Plan For any disaster, have a plan of where to meet and how to communicate with family and friends. An Evacuation Package Make sure to include important family documents, such as birth certificates and insurance policies in your evacuation package. Think about keepsakes and items that insurance could never replace. Place all of these items in a waterproof and fireproof container. Make sure everyone knows where the package is kept and assign a family member responsibility for it in case you need to evacuate. Emergency Contact Pick a friend or family member that’s not in the affected
area to call in the event of an evacuation. This contact can be the person who lets others know where you are and that you’re safe so you won’t have to spend precious time doing so. Good to Know: Take a look at your insurance policies to make sure you’re adequately covered. Keep lists or videos of your belongings as documentation for the insurance company. Prepare a Safety Kit Make sure everyone in the household knows where the safety kit is kept. Include the following: • Battery-powered radio or TV • Flashlight • Extra batteries • Candles and matches • Fire extinguisher • Blankets or sleeping bags • One change of clothing and footwear per person • Protective clothing depending on the weather (rainwear, rain boots, coats, gloves, etc) • Non-perishable food and water (one gallon per person per day) to last three days. Water shouldn’t be more than six months old. • Non-electric can opener • First-aid kit with medications • Extra set of car keys, credit/debit cards, and cash • Sanitary supplies • Cell phone and tablet chargers (home and auto). Also consider a hand-cranked charger that you can use when the electricity goes out. Some of these devices also include a builtin flashlight and a radio.

WHY IMPACT WINDOWS ARE THE OBVIOUS CHOICE
L
iving a walk or short drive away from the beach is considered paradise. But when hurricane season hits, precaution needs to be enforced.
During a storm or windy event, one of the first things to fail any structure are the windows. Those that are non-impact can shatter very easily, allowing for wind to make its way inside and wreak havoc. Not only are interior spaces destroyed, with enough pressure build-up, the roof can be separated in moments. These windows are fragile and pose a very serious threat. Impact windows are the safety measure all homes and buildings need to take. They are effectively designed to withstand flying debris common during severe storms. This prevents any harm or disaster from taking place to either the property or people inside of it. Installing impact windows can also lower insurance premiums by 45%, as they’re not only a defense against harsh weather, but also to unwelcomed intruders. More than just a preventative step, impact windows also increase property value and lower energy costs. They come in several lamination options and provide superior insulating capabilities. In addition to an effectively climate controlled environment, they block 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays. This creates an overall healthier environment and prevents furnishings from fading. Another key advantage they provide is noise reduction. In a world that is getting increasingly
louder, the insulation acts as a noise-cancelling barrier allowing for soothe and calm interiors. There are several obvious reasons and advantages of why impact windows should be everyone’s solution. There’s also one reason that isn’t as obvious, but perhaps the strongest incentive. It’s for their quality. Impact windows are manufactured to resist storms, and by default, the test of time. Built stronger, they last longer and provide many more years of optimal performance. At Ready Window all impact windows are approved by Miami-Dade, Florida Building and the International Building Code. With 25 years of experience in South Florida, they know just how serious a storm can be, and how to prevent all unnecessary damage. Don’t take a risk and visit www. readywindow.com today. Serving S. 16 Bath Trends You Need to Try Now Content provided by lowes.com
F
rom floating vanities to the resurgence of tubs, there are trends you need to know about before refreshing or remodeling your bathroom.
Mix & Match Tile
Floor and wall tile doesn’t have to match. The glazed subway tile is in a zigzag pattern and surrounded by moulding, framing it out. The small black and white floor tile helps to break up some of the grey and offers depth.
Paint & Moulding To create a dramatic look in your bathroom, paint the moulding, doors and window panes all the same color. Patterned wallpaper in the same color scheme completes the look. Bathtubs After years of homeowners tearing them out to replace with larger showers, the tub is coming back.
Beautiful freestanding tubs are statement pieces in larger bathrooms. Types range from the more traditional clawfoot to sleek and modern oval tubs. Floating Vanities Furniture-style vanities have been popular for years, but for more modern homes consider a wall-mount vanity. They make the space appear more open and airy perfect for contemporary bathrooms. Paint Colors There are plenty of pretty white, gray or beige bathrooms. But if you’re feeling more adventurous, consider painting your bathroom an unexpected color. Be especially bold in powder rooms where a deep color such as navy, black or hot pink makes a big statement in a little space. Vanities & Storage Large or master bathrooms usually have one long vanity, but there’s a new trend that’s emerged. Homeowners are taking two single vanities and combining them by placing storage towers or cabinets in between. By customizing to your unique specifications, you get storage and style in one. Wallpaper This bold and cheery wallpaper is perfect for a powder room. It’s best to avoid wallpaper in master or guest baths where the moisture from showers or baths can cause it to peel. Tub Framing If you’d like to modernize the look of your existing tub, consider adding a wooden front that blends in with the rest of the bathroom. Large Subway Tile
grout for a more modern or industrial look. Wall Lighting This type of lighting is not only on-trend, but is more flattering than overhead and better for getting ready in the morning. Side lighting can be installed on the walls or hung as pendants from the ceiling. Moulding & Tile Mix Spice up a boring bathroom with a mix of tile and moulding. This pebble tile creates an interesting border, while the white box moulding polishes off the look. Vertical Shiplap Horizontal shiplap has been a huge trend in the last couple of years. While the classic horizontal look will work, hanging it vertically provides a newer, fresher look. Wood Look Tile Have the look of hardwood floors in your bathroom without the worry of them being ruined. Wood look tile comes in many widths and color variations and looks great on the floors, as well as the walls. Subway Patterns Subway is always a classic tile that’s popular in bathrooms, but try something different with this stairstep look. Tile Work Go beyond the typical halfway point with your wall tile. Running it 60-70% up the wall creates a cleaner, more modern look. Vertical Moulding Moulding adds depth and visual interest in a bathroom. Try hanging it vertically and paint it the same color as the walls to make ceilings appear higher.
This is another take on classic subway tile. The tiles are larger than typical subway and filled in with a dark

At the center of the interior, the brand’s all-new widescreen Information and Entertainment system is available in 6.5 inches or 8.8 inches and offers an intuitive, yet sophisticated series of features all elegantly “hidden” in the instrument panel. Below, in the center console, the rotary controller is ergonomically located and features a simple operation of the entertainment system. Last, the Alfa DNA drive mode selector (featuring three standard drive modes: Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency) is adjacent to the automatic shifter, enabling the driver to easily adjust the Alfa Romeo Giulia’s driving behavior. In addition to the expansive list of standard features in the all-new Giulia, Giulia Ti adds even more luxury and convenience offerings, including standard 18-inch wheels, genuine wood interior accents, front park sensors, an 8.8-inch widescreen infotainment display along with heated steering wheel and heated front seats. With its muscular proportions and a “pure” design ethos of passion, lightness and simplistic elegance “clothing” its class-leading technical layout with near perfect 50/50 weight balance, the all-new 2017 Giulia exudes stunning and functional Italian style with a finesse of Alfa Romeo heritage, athletically taut lines and sculptural details. Does Your Credit Score Affect Your Car Insurance Rate?
Like It or Not, Poor Credit Can Mean Steeper Rates
D
Content provided by edmunds.com • by Jaime Netzer
oes your credit score impact your car insurance rate? It’s a question you might have wondered about before — especially if you have a particularly spotty credit record. Unless you live in California, Hawaii or Massachusetts, the short answer is yes. The explanation of the relationship between credit scores and car insurance rate-setting is more complex, however. What Factors Into a Car Insurance Rate? Obviously, your driving record has an impact on the estimated risk your insurance company assumes by taking you on as a driver. There also are other risk elements that affect your car insurance, according to the Insurance Information Institute: where you park your car at night, your gender,
your age and the kind of car you drive. Also relevant to your rate, according to insurance companies, is your credit score. The practice of using credit scores in setting insurance rates has been around for at least 20 years. According to at least two studies, a 2003 study done at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, and a 2007 study by the Federal Trade Commission, there is a statistical correlation between how much a consumer costs an insurance company and that customer’s credit score. The Texas study looked at a random sample of 175,647 people in the state and found that “the lower a named insured’s credit score, the higher the probability that the insured will incur losses on an automobile insurance policy, and the higher the expected loss on the policy.” The study’s authors noted that they did not attempt to explain why credit scoring added significantly to the insurer’s ability to
predict insurance losses. The FTC study found that credit-based insurance scores are effective predictors of risk under automobile policies. “They are predictive of the number of claims consumers file and the total cost of those claims,” study authors write. “The use of scores is therefore likely to make the price of insurance better match the risk of loss posed by the consumer. Thus, on average, higher-risk consumers will pay higher premiums and lower-risk consumers will pay lower premiums.” It’s also important to note that insurance companies don’t use traditional credit scores. They build their own scores based on FICO or Experian scores: Basically, companies take your score and use it in their own model. But Is This Fair? According to J. Robert Hunter, director of insurance at the Consumer Federation of America, credit scoring was the first classification factor used by insurance companies that was not based on traditional actuarial research. Before this, he says, rate factors were determined by developing a thesis and then testing it by collecting data to determine if it was correct. For example: If the thesis was that drivers with a DUI conviction might have more claims in the following year, actuaries might look at statistical evidence to see if such a thesis was correct. Hunter said that advocates for the use of credit scores in car insurance rate-setting “still cannot explain what they are measuring, coming up with explanations like, ‘Sloppy with finance means sloppy with driving.’ “Of course, when the 2008 financial crisis hit, many people developed worse credit scores that had nothing to do with their sloppiness,” he said. “The fact is that credit is a surrogate for prohibited rate classes such as income and race,” Hunter said. “Insurers are prohibited from using these factors in all states and we think this is their way around the prohibition.” But others argue that insurance is a numbers game and the practice, even if unfair, might be logical. Frankie Kuo, an analyst at ValuePenguin.com, says that insurers are “doing their best to find out whether their future and current policyholders are a good or bad risk to take.” What You Can Do To Mitigate Your Costs Regardless of whether the use of credit history is fair, it is legal in all but three states. So what can you do if your credit score is in less than perfect shape? As always, your best bet is to shop around for an insurance company.
“Insurers always differ in how much weight they put on each rating factor, and I guarantee you consumers will always find one that finds their imperfect credit score less of a problem than other insurers do,” Kuo explains. According to a study by WalletHub, Geico appears to rely the least on credit scores, while Farmers Insurance seems to lean on it the most heavily. For consumers who have difficulty finding coverage at all, in almost every state there is an assigned risk plan that helps high-risk drivers find coverage for a limited period of time. “Even if the rates may be higher than if they obtain a policy in the voluntary market, they will be avoiding insurance lapse, which not only contributes to higher rates in the future, but also possibly legal consequences,” Kuo explained. Finally, improve or maintain your credit history by paying your bills on time and not skipping payments. You also should check your credit report and keep an eye out for possible errors. Consider free credit monitoring with a company like CreditKarma and free annual credit-history reports from AnnualCreditReport.com.

The performance hood features a center air inlet duct flanked by heat extractors, a front lower valence that houses a new coldair duct system and LED fog lamps. Durango GT models equipped with the Blacktop or Brass Monkey appearance package now offer the performance hood, first seen on Durango SRT, as an available option. “Performance is more than stats, at Dodge performance is an attitude that permeates through everything we do,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “And new for 2018, Durango buyers can get SRT attitude with every Durango powertrain – from the 295 horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 to the 360 horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 to the new 475 horsepower 6.4-liter SRT – strengthening the brand’s promise to deliver performance vehicles with world-class power, technology and standout styling our customers have come to expect.” In addition to the new front fascia, Durango R/T is one of only two models to be available in a B5 Blue exterior color (late availability); Durango SRT being the other. Front Park Assist, which uses sensors in the front bumper, is now included with ParkSense® Park Assist System and is now standard on Durango R/T models. New for 2018, Durango GT models now feature a standard power liftgate
and Capri and suede bucket leather seats. Capri leather seats and the Technology Group are also available as standalone options, as well. For 2018, all Durango models feature a backup camera, a new sport steering wheel and driver-oriented electronic T-shifter which provides the driver with intuitive gear selection and offers an Auto Stick selector gate for added control. Customers can also opt for the available hand wrapped instrument panel with accent stitching. Dodge continues to deliver customization and features that its loyal Durango customers love. Durango R/T’s new look is standard with a BeatsAudio nine-speaker audio system that includes a subwoofer and a 506-watt amplifier. This BeatsAudio premium audio system offers studio quality sound in the customer’s vehicle, available on the Durango GT and Citadel, and standard on R/T. The Dodge Durango boasts class-leading towing and driving range, confident driving dynamics, advanced technology, aggressive styling, and with the addition of the new exterior performance fascia on R/T, now offers even more ways customers can stand out in a sea of sameness. Dealers are currently able to place orders and vehicles will start arriving in dealerships in the third quarter of 2017.
