Exclusive: UM Accuser Predicts NCAA Death Penalty lipped waiting for more information to come out, possibly as soon as Tuesday evening. But, he did reveal who he thinks is at fault and some of the things he was able to do with the program. “The university, because of the desire to put money first, I was given carte blanche to do things I shouldn’t have been able to do,” Shapiro told CBS4. “I led the team out of the tunnel twice in the Orange Bowl.” Reporting Tim Kephart MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Former University of Miami booster, and federal convict, Nevin Shapiro said his evidence will spark the NCAA’s most severe punishment that could bring about the end of football at the University of Miami. In an exclusive interview with CBS4’s Jim Berry, Shapiro said the information the NCAA has in its possession is “going to be so detailed and to the truth that it will be impossible for any former players or current players to go around it.” Shapiro said for the first time that not only was it players who sought favor with him, but also Hurricanes football staff was involved. According to Shapiro’s attorney, Maria Elena Perez, the information first came out under questioning by federal officials and bankruptcy trustee attorneys. Shapiro is at the heart of an NCAA investigation and his involvement with the school dates back to 2001-2002. Shapiro’s attorney has claimed that he provided UM players with the use of a yacht and various other favors. In the interview with Berry, Shapiro was tight-
In CBS4’s video archives, Shapiro is seen in front of the tunnel as the Canes entered the field before a game. He is also shown getting excited after a kickoff return was taken back for a touchdown and jumping onto the field. Shapiro said that he was “hurt” by his treatment by the very players he once thought of as friends. But, “there’s no jealousy or envy of the money they make, their position in life, none.” Shapiro continued revealing a little about what he did, but he also had a critique of the players themselves. “I helped in certain ways. They’re gifted ball players, but just because you’re gifted doesn’t mean you have the mental also,” Shapiro said. “I helped them in a lot of other ways. I felt more than a friend, felt like a family member. With certain guys I felt like a father figure.” Perez gave more details about the culture that was going on when Nevin was dealing with the University of Miami and its student-athletes. “The players would seek him out,” Perez said. “The players would look for Nevin; Nevin became the in-thing. It was cool to hang out with Nevin. They wanted to be with him, because he was paying. Nevin thought this was
standard operating procedure, I’m not inventing this. Nevin is not going to be the first booster. This probably happens in 99.9 percent of the schools.”
Perez also said that she didn’t think “anyone was a victim, everyone participated in this.”
Perez also addressed whether Nevin was seeking favor with the schools and the athletes and buying his way into the program.
When Shapiro was asked what he might say to UM president Donna Shalala, he was very complimentary of her.
“There’s no benefit of that because he’s paying all the bills,” Perez said. “What’s the benefit of going out and spending twenty thousand of your dollars. On any given night you’re drinking thousand dollar bottles of wines, you got 12 people, you’re going to clubs, and you’re paying for dancers. You’re paying for a lot of things that are expensive. This wasn’t a onetime thing; it was repeatedly over a long time.”
“I respect her very much,” Shapiro said. “I think she’s a wonderful woman and is all about education. I’m sorry that she has to deal with this situation now.”
Perez said Shapiro didn’t want to be known as the guy who brought about the end of football at Miami, but rather as someone who changed the rules to protect the program from boosters. “Nevin would rather be known as the guy who established standards and procedures to prevent future people like him from being able to penetrate a school,” Perez said. Naturally, the first question from most fans is why anyone, including the NCAA, should believe anything that a felon may say. “You don’t have to believe anything he says,” Perez said. “A lot of these statements are statements against interest that people usually don’t make unless they’re true; because by making these statements he’s implicating himself as well.” Perez continued, “Take it for what it is, don’t shoot the messenger. Nevin didn’t invent this, this isn’t the first time the university has gotten
in trouble for this.”
As for Shapiro, he said he has come to grips with his situation and is comfortable with his life now, but gave the Hurricanes a warning. “I sleep so peaceful at night,” Shapiro said. I take my blame. I do what I did. The NCAA has a 10-month head start on what the University of Miami is about to run into.” As for the former coaches who would have been involved during the time the alleged allegations occurred, former UM coach Larry Coker, who is now the head coach of the University of Texas-San Antonio, said he had not been contacted by the NCAA or the University of Miami. Coach Coker said he had no further comment on the issue. When Shapiro was asked what will happen to the University of Miami’s team, he pulled no punches. “I can tell you what I think will happen,” Shapiro told CBS4, “death penalty.” Berry asked Shapiro if he has a smoking gun of information that’s going to shut down the storied program at “the U.” Shapiro responded simply, “a tsunami.”

TSA Making Screening Machines At MIA Less Invasive MIAMI (CBS4) – Changes are coming to Miami International Airport to make specialized screening by the Transportation Security Administration less invasive. On Tuesday, it was announced that the TSA would be installing new software on its millimeter wave Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines which would eliminate passenger specific images. Once the upgrade is installed, the machines will show a generic outline of the passenger with potential threats identified by an Automated Target Recognition program. By eliminating the image of an actual passenger and replacing it with a generic outline of a person, passengers will be able to view the same outline that the TSA officer sees, according to the security agency. Also, a separate TSA officer will no longer be required to view the image in
a remotely located viewing room. “This software upgrade enables us to continue providing a high level of security through advanced imaging technology screening, while improving the passenger experience at checkpoints,” said TSA Administrator John Pistole in a written statement. As with the current version of AIT, if a potential threat is detected, the area will require additional screening. If no potential threats are detected, an “OK” appears on the monitor with no outline, and the passenger is cleared. Miami International has four millimeter wave AITs.

Miami-Dade Launches Storm Surge Simulator shore by the force of the winds swirling around a hurricane. County residents can now use the Storm Surge Simulator which combines historical data and modern day technology to see what storm surge can mean to them and their property. Storm surge is the primary reason why Miami-Dade residents are asked to evacuate prior to a hurricane event. New Visual Tool Allows Residents to See Their Vulnerability MIAMI (CBS4) — As South Florida tracked Hurricane Irene and recognized the 19th Anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, a new tool has been launched for MiamiDade residents regarding the threat of storm surge. Storm surge is the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane. It occurs when water from the ocean is pushed toward the
With the new Storm Surge Simulator, residents type in their address, pick the intensity of the hurricane (Category 1-5), select the image of a person or home, and let the simulator do the rest. For those living in Evacuation Zones, the simulator is a reminder of the potential impact of storm surge. More than a half a million people live in one of Miami-Dade County’s three Hurricane Evacuation Zones. “Miami-Dade residents are encouraged to
use the Storm Surge Simulator to educate themselves on their vulnerability to storm surge and put an appropriate hurricane evacuation plan into place,” said Curtis Sommerhoff, Director of the Miami-Dade Department of Emergency Management. “Understanding your risk can help mitigate the impacts of a disaster. The launch of the simulator is especially timely as we are in the middle of a very active hurricane season.”

Rolladen Customers To Get Refunds In Deal With State HALLANDALE (CBSMiami) – One of South Florida’s most well known hurricane shutter companies, in trouble with consumers and the state for allegedly taking money without installing shutters, will be giving customers more than threequarters of a million dollars in refunds after reaching a settlement for the Florida Attorney General’s office.
Rolladen must provide the refunds within 90 days.
Hallandale-based Rolladen had come under fire for allegedly taking $790 thousand in deposits, but in many cases, failing to finish installations. Rolladen is best known for it’s pricey powered rolldown shutters that were especially useful above the ground floor of buildings. The state was prepared to consider shutting the company down before reaching the settlement
Hoffman and Rolladen are also named in nearly a dozen lawsuits filed regarding his business practices.
Under the agreement with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, Rolladen owner Robert Hoffman will return the deposits and stay out of the shutter business for a year, prohibited by the settlement from marketing or installing shutters.
This does not end Hoffman’s problems. The president of the 42-year-old company was arrested in July by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, charged with running an organized scheme to defraud based on the way he had run his company.
Rolladen customers who have questions about the settlement can call the Attorney General’s office at 866-966-7226.

Recession Made Many South Floridians Small Business Owners sometimes I ask when did I start doing this? I’m a trucker.” Yepes used to be a graphic designer. “It was really tough. One day I didn’t like it. I was working for the money but I didn’t enjoy what I was doing so.” So she left to make and sell her own gelato, and Dolce Peccati was born.
Reporting David Sutta dsutta@cbs.com NORTH MIAMI (CBS4) – It’s a Tuesday night in North Miami and food trucks are lined up as usual. It’s a phenomenon that’s exploded in South Florida over the last couple of years and not by chance. So, did gelato truck owner Natalie Yepes ever envision herself running a food truck? She laughs and says “No! Never. Actually
startup companies, has found entrepreneurship is at a 15 year high. More people are giving up their day job for “Plan B” and there is a lot of envy out there. James Tuney, a construction worker told Sutta, “I hope that someday I can own a truck like this and wear flip flops and not have to climb ladders.”
Much to her surprise it was not a piece of cake.
David Medina has actually looked into the trucks as a business for himself.
“It’s not easier but I enjoy it.” Yepes told CBS4’s David Sutta.
“You could succeed or you could fail. Me personally if I had the capital I would go for it,” Medina said.
Yepes works seven days a week. When she’s not on the road she’s cooking, accounting, and marketing. That’s life in a second career born out of the recession and she’s not alone as the field is packed with no less than 30 trucks. “It used to be eight to ten trucks. But now every week there is something new.” Dozens of people who used to do something else are now their own boss /truck driver. The Kaufman Foundation, which tracks
Damian Davis, a chef, explains it makes perfect sense. “When it really comes down to it it’s all about your happiness. If you can’t survive being some place and you really don’t like it then you might as well barely survive doing something you love.” And so one scoop at a time, Yepes is surviving the recession.
“Yeah, I’m gonna make it. I love it and I’m sure it’s going to work.” She says. And that’s her advice to anyone out of work or just miserable: find something you like, like gelato, and go for it. On the web: www.dolcipeccatigelato.com.

Rent Your Stuff, Make Some Money Campbell rents hers out all the time. “I’ve had several really positive rental experiences,” she said. She just lists it as available on www.SnapGoods.com, one of a growing number of web sites that allow owners to post their possessions for rent. You can find anything from cars to cameras to disco balls
Reporting Al Sunshine SUNSHIA@wfor.cbs.com
“If you’re the person who owns the items, the ability to deflate costs on something that you spent a good deal of money on is great, particularly if you’re not using it.” said Ron J. Williams, of SnapGoods.com
Web sites help you rent your possessions for cash
People have started to figure out that spending a ton of money on something they may only need every now and then is no longer practical.
MIAMI (CBS4) — Think about how much stuff you own, and how little you use it. Wouldn’t it be nice to make some money on items just sitting around your house? These days it’s easier than ever due to a new trend — renting your stuff.
“If I don’t have to buy a $15,000 HD red camera, and instead can get it for $500 for the week or the day. I win, you win.” said Williams
Need a car for a day, or a weekend? Kristin
It’s not just stuff you can rent out. On sites such as www.parkatmyhouse.com you can make money off your driveway or extra lot.
“It’s really popular if you live near a ball park or stadium.” said Kyle Taylor of www.thepennyhoarder.com. There’s also www.singlespotcamping.com, and even www.storeatmyhouse.com. “People are renting out their extra closet space and attic space.” said Taylor. So what can you make by renting out your stuff? You could get over $200 a month for a
driveway, $300 for your car for a week or $20 for your Kitchen Aid mixer for the day. Typically, prices vary depending on several variables, including the owner and renter. But you still need to follow some precautions. Be sure the site you rent your stuff through offers you protection in case something goes wrong. And check your own insurance policies and zoning laws to make sure it’s ok to rent out your car, or a parking space, for that matter.

Miami-Dade School Cafeterias Get High-Tech, Healthy Makeovers
MIAMI (CBS4) – Miami-Dade students returned to the classroom last week to find some of their cafeterias had undergone high-tech, healthy makeovers to battle childhood obesity in South Florida. The Miami-Dade County Public Schools Department of Food and Nutrition installed a reimbursable meal vending machine at Miami Beach Senior High on Friday.
It’s one of 45 high schools and 10 middle schools that will receive the wireless and cashless vending machines that are scheduled to be installed throughout Miami-Dade County by October 2011.
Students access the Star Food Healthy Express machines by typing in their student ID and birth date to receive a healthy meal of their choice that is ready in about 20 seconds.
The vending machines serve up healthy meal options made from local ingredients.
The machines don’t take cash. Parents set up prepaid accounts that students can access from the vending machines to buy complete meals made that day. If the account is set up online, parents can get an itemized list of the foods purchased.
An estimated 17 percent of American kids ages 2 to 19 are obese, and the MiamiDade County Health Department received almost $15 million in federal stimulus funds for obesity prevention through the Community Putting Prevention to Work program. Some of the grant money is being used to install the Star Food Healthy Express vending machines. Alberto Carvalho, Miami-Dade County School Superintendent, said the focus is mainly on minority children. “This is our response to pervasive obesity in America and right here in Miami-Dade, which unfortunately is hitting mostly minority children.”
Although each student account is attached to a meal account, more than 50 percent of students in the district are on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s reimbursable meal program. The technology allows students not to be singled out in the cafeteria line. In addition, the school has partnered with a variety of local celebrity chefs, including the Food Network’s Michelle Bernstein, to offer quick healthy options. From Caribbean wraps to yogurt parfait – the most popular item for sale – more than
58,000 lunches have been sold through the machines during the trial period that ran from April until June. School systems around the country have been using Star Food Healthy Express on a smaller scale for the last few school years, but Miami-Dade is the first to implement the machines district-wide. They are also the first to tie in local chefs with the program. Each vending machine holds 90 meals at a time and is usually restocked once during a lunch period

Researchers Find Smelly Feet Attract Mosquitoes Reporting Cynthia Demos CDemos@cbs.com MIAMI (CBS4) – If you’ve been getting a lot of itchy bumps on your legs, your smelly feet may be to blame. A Dutch researcher found that mosquitoes use foot odors to guide them to the best biting places. The Remco Suer report states that Mosquitoes might somehow be attracted to the bacteria in your sweat soaked feet and that finding a way to isolate these odors could reduce their nuisance and even slow the spread of disease. The findings are especially important in places like South Florida, who’s incessant rain during the summer makes any standing water a haven for skeeters.
“The mosquitoes are terrible,” said Carlos Santa Maria, a camp counselor at Coconut Grove’s Kennedy Park. CBS4’s Cynthia Demos spoke to some local podiatrists who say the reason they smell is because they sweat. So if you can cut down on the sweat, you can cut back on the problem. First, wash your feet well. You can use an anti-perspirant to cut back on the sweat or any powder will do, especially those made for foot odor. Doctors say if they over the counter remedies don’t work you can get something like Drysol, prescription medication for excessive sweating. “I’ll take advantage and powder next time,” said Santa Maria.

Reporting Vanessa Borge MIAMI (CBS4) – South Florida is in the midst of a culinary love affair with food trucks, but with dozens of food trucks serving up your favorite grub, it can be hard to keep track of them all, until now. South Florida’s first iPhone app for finding and mapping the vast fleet of convenient cuisine on wheels is now being launched.
“People are always chasing us, which is a good thing. The app definitely makes it easier for them,” said David Garcia, owner of the Fish Box food truck. South Florida foodies can celebrate the launch of the Food Truck Tracker App at a launch party Friday night at Tamiami Park. More than 50 trucks will be there from 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. “You see all these families, they bring out
their tailgate gear. It’s a great experience. That’s what they should do tonight,” Garcia said. The party also features Burger Beast giveaways, including an iPad2 with the Beast’s app pre-installed. Casey Anthony’s Parents To Break Silence On Dr. Phil
Cindy and George Anthony Sit Down with Dr. Phil McGraw for an Exclusive Interview HOLLYWOOD, Calif. George and Cindy Anthony will appear on the season premiere of Dr. Phil on Monday, September 12th which will air on CBS4. “Cindy and George have suffered a horrific
loss with the untimely death of their granddaughter Caylee, and they have since endured an unprecedented public attack on their family,” said Dr. Phil. “Have these attacks been warranted, or not? I looked them straight in the eye and asked some very tough questions. Despite living under a ‘media microscope’ for years, Their story has never really been told and there’s so much more to it than we’ve heard in the media,” said Dr. Phil. “Throughout this extensive interview, we explore every detail of their ordeal, and they answer every question I know will be on our viewers’ minds. Nothing is off limits during this interview.” Cindy Anthony said she knew that she and George would want to speak at some point and figured there was no better place than with Dr. Phil. “We are hoping that by doing this interview, we will be able to help other people who may be experiencing struggles of their own,” said Cindy Anthony. “We certainly don’t want anyone to experience what we have these last three years.”
George Anthony continued, “We appreciate the way in which Dr. Phil has helped others, and we trust him enough to completely open our hearts in telling our story. He is a professional that understands the uniqueness of our family situation. There’s no one better to do this interview than Dr. Phil. We knew he would ask the difficult questions, and we were right.” The Anthony’s did not get paid for the interview, but asked only that a donation be made to a charitable organization currently being formed to honor their granddaughter, called “Caylee’s Fund.” It will be a federally sanctioned 501 (c) (3) focused on educating the public about and advocating for grandparents’ rights, as well as missing and abused children. Teach For A Day To Raise Money For Education School, while Nancy Mulshein taught social media safety to a group of high school students at Robert Morgan Educational Center. Mulshein and Casanova are not teachers but are business professionals.
Reporting Jawan Strader JStrader@wfor.cbs.com MIAMI (CBS4) — There’s nothing like the memories of our first day of school. But we often don’t think about what the first day is like for teachers. Well now you can thanks to a non-profit organization that lets you become a teacher for a day while helping to raise money for education. Mr. Casanova taught science to first, second and third graders at Royal Palm Elementary
Mulshein is an executive at FPL and Casanova is a branch manager at HSBC. They both took part in the Education Fund’s Teach-A-Thon; a Walk-A-Thon with a twist to raise money for the Education Fund by becoming a teacher for a day. Mulshein is one of the programs top fundraisers. “I absolutely encourage people to take part in it. It’s a worthwhile cause,” said Mulshein. While today’s teachers are faced with massive budget cuts and little recognition, the Teach-A-Thon is a way to recognize teachers for all of their hard work and dedicated efforts.
Now in its seventh year, the Teach-A-Thon is gaining popularity from local businesses. Vanessa Hassele with Whole Foods said several of her team members will be teaching a number of topics in the Teach-AThon. “The classes are going to range on topics from healthy eating to organic farming and the impact of recycling in our own

Pacino, ‘Scarface’ Cast Celebrate Film’s Legacy Abraham and producer Martin Bregman at a party Tuesday heralding the film’s Bluray release. Part of the charm of the film, Pacino said, is that it wasn’t initially a hit. “It’s one of my favorites because of its whole evolution,” he said. “It (was) sort of eviscerated after it opened by the press. … Nobody was fond of it, except it had good audience participation.” LOS ANGELES (CBS4) — Al Pacino says he got burned while making “Scarface.” Literally, he grabbed the hot barrel of a gun that had just shot 30 rounds during one of Tony Montana’s violent scenes. “My hand stuck to that sucker,” the 71year-old actor recalled. He couldn’t work for two weeks. Pacino relayed the experience during a discussion with “Scarface” co-stars Steven Bauer, Robert Loggia and F. Murray
He said “it’s almost a miracle” audiences continue to discover and appreciate the film. He wanted to make it after being inspired by Paul Muni’s performance in the 1932 original. Sidney Lumet suggested he make the main character Cuban instead of Italian. Pacino’s “Scarface” is set in 1980s Miami, and Tony Montana is an ambitious immigrant who runs a growing drug empire until he eventually collapses under greed and addiction. Pacino’s performance as the
gun-wielding, coke-snorting Montana is among his most memorable. He said that during the nine months he was shooting the film, his character practically inhabited him. When a friend’s yappy little dog lunged at him, Pacino said he cocked back his fist instinctively, as if threatening a punch. “So I love Tony Montana, man, because I couldn’t do that!” Pacino said Tuesday. Bregman called “Scarface” a “perfect, perfect movie.” Its timeless themes of greed, desire and ambition would make it controversial even if it were just released today, Pacino said. Screenwriter Oliver Stone and director Brian De Palma were both “trying to talk about the avarice of the `80s,” Pacino said. “At that time, there was this whole thing about greed, which was Wall Street and everything, and I think that’s part of it. A great character, too, Tony Montana — a
person who dares to do anything, who flies like a Phoenix, like Icarus, close to the sun.” The Blu-Ray will be released Sept. 6. “Scarface” is also set to play at 475 theaters nationwide on Aug. 31 for a special onenight engagement. The sculptures were transported from a workshop near the Everglades to Pembroke Pines City Center and were placed under a 12 foot-high steel gazebo near the new Veterans Memorial located 10300 Pines Blvd. One of Menasche’s featured pieces is a nine-ton Italian marble cube which will serve as a base for the girder and display the four stages of the tragedyon its sides; the shock of the attack, disbelief, grieving and rebuilding . According to the city’s website; “Surrounding this central structure will be massive steel statues breathtakingly
created by artist Felix Gonzalez. It is impossible to view these statues without a rush of emotion. The sculptures pay tribute to the heroism displayed on that terrible day. They include a depiction of the Twin Towers, a firefighter, a police officer, a woman, and a child.” The artworks are meant to portray the emotions of suffering and renewal in
remembering September 11. The collection was funded by donations. The city paid $167,000 to build the gazebos. There will be an official unveiling ceremony of the commemorative artwork at 8:30 a.m. on September 11.
