THE MESSAGE FROM MIKEY’S UNCLE BY M ICHAE L STRAU M I ETI S

While growing up in a farming community outside Chicago, Illinois, we lived close to an uncle who insisted on calling me Mikey. I hated that name because it made me sound like a little kid. I think he knew the nickname bothered me, but I have to admit that it got my attention. Even today, I can see him looking down at me and saying, “Mikey, when you get, you have to give.” I never understood that because there wasn’t a lot of getting in my young life. But the words stuck with me. They never rang so loud and clear as they did last November. I had been in New York and the city was alive with the holiday spirit. I then flew to Bulgaria and was stunned by the contrast. There were a few decorations, but little of the spirit. I happen to feel very strongly about Bulgaria and its people. Not only is it a beautiful country, but they have one of the best plant research facilities in the world. Unfortunately, 20% of the Bulgarian people live below the poverty line. As a result, it has one of the highest mortality rates in

the world, right behind Afghanistan and Somalia. This is due to widespread poverty and the lack of adequate health care. Boy, if ever there was a need for giving, this was the place. But you know what? Unlike in Western nations, there was no such thing as corporate-funded charities in Bulgaria. Not that there isn’t a number of successful companies in the country. But corporate-funded charities have never been considered by any of them. So last year, I met with Gino Yordanov and Robert Higgins, the other two founders of Advanced Nutrients, and suggested a program for feeding needy families in Bulgaria. As I expected, they were enthusiastic about the idea. The program was named Holiday Heroes and ended up feeding 1,000 needy families last Christmas. But that wasn’t the real cause for celebration. We had introduced the concept of corporate giving and the idea was catching fire. To further fan the flames, we helped sponsor Holiday Heroes again during the Easter season. But this time, it was on a much more successful scale. The fundraising revolved around a televised benefit concert featuring some of Bulgaria’s top talent. It was a smash hit. Corporate donations came rolling in from CocaCola, Helli, Josi, AGI, Bilka and Metro Cash & Carry. We even received assistance from the U.N., with volunteers coming from such countries as Russia, Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey, Afghanistan, Tunisia, Lithuania and India. These volunteers helped pack and deliver food to Bulgarian families. Also coming on board were the Bulgarian Food Bank and the Bulgarian Red Cross, along with such government agencies as the Metropolitan Municipality of Sofia and the BulgarianAmerican Chamber of Commerce. And this is just the beginning. I can’t help feeling that by the end of the year, corporate giving will be an established concept in Bulgaria. So, between Holiday Heroes and a number of other charities supported by both Rosebud and Advanced Nutrients, I think my uncle’s instruction to give is flourishing. He’s no longer with us, but I like to think he’s up there watching and saying, “You done good, Mikey. Keep it up.” Talk soon, Big Mike :)

Summer is most growers’ favorite season. We may love indoor horticulture with all its exact science and precise controls to cultivate the finest flowers, but let’s be honest—who wouldn’t prefer to spend a day tending to giant plants out in the sun rather than being stuck inside under the hum of indoor lamps? It’s a no-brainer. Of course, working outdoors means interacting with nature’s unpredictable ways. Problematic pests and persistent heat are problems all outdoor growers face, which is why we dedicated several articles in this issue to confronting those challenges head on. Knowing thy enemy is the best way to defeat him (or it, as the case may be), so be sure to read all the information we offer in this issue. It’ll make your outdoor garden a summer success story. lants are far from the helpless greenery we perceive them to be. Over millions of years, our herbaceous friends have developed an ample arsenal of defense systems as diverse and unique as the botanical world itself. Pheromones are one such adaptation, a chemical sign language used by plants that is undetectable to pests and predators. To this day, pheromones in plants have not been thoroughly researched. While there is evidence that plants are capable of inducing the social responses that pheromones are known for, examples from vegetative life remain few. Scientists know that plants generally use pheromones in a reactive sense, as an alarm induced by the damage of a grazing predator or as a repellent to fend off such attacks. How a plant utilizes pheromones to its advantage is clever and mysterious. In trees, pheromones have been linked to increased production of tannin and phenolic

compounds, two bitter substances that acidify foliage to the point of being inedible, and also lethal. In closed studies, Sitka willows, sugar maples and acacias have all been observed to increase tannin levels in response to being attacked by pests, thus degenerating their leaf quality. What activates a pheromonal response, however, is the mimicked behavior of neighboring trees that also raise their tannin levels and degenerate their leaf quality congruently, without yet having been physically harmed by invading pests. This suggests that trees will release an alarm pheromone, possibly in the form of ethylene, to alert trees of the same species of an impending

attack. Curiously enough, an increase in tannins and phenolics is induced only when plants are damaged through foraging, suggesting that plants also possess the ability to detect pheromones of insects and animals and discern chemically between being bitten and being affected by environmental forces. In some instances, plants will use an insect’s own pheromones against it. Wild potato, when preyed on by aphids, can synthesize components of the insect’s alarm pheromone to generate a false alert. When released back into the air, a wary aphid will flee the area believing that the imitation pheromone is a warning transmitted by its own kind. Carnivorous plants are just as cunning, simulating insect pheromones to lure them into a trapping mechanism. Sundews, butterwort and pitcher plants each secrete a mucilaginous fluid with bogus pheromones that line their soft tissue. An insect attracted by the scent will either fall into the deep cup of the pitcher plant or adhere to the sticky exterior of the sundew and butterwort to be digested slowly over time. Although it may seem like the pheromone warfare waged by plants and their insect predators could be of value in the agricultural world, an effective insecticide has yet to be developed using plant pheromones. Since the chemical language between insects is far better understood, pest control has instead learned from the method in which plants use insect pheromones to trick them into avoiding a certain crop or be baited into a pheromone trap. We still have much to learn about plant pheromones, but their very existence offers great potential for growers to assist their crop using nature’s own methods.

I suggest using neem oil because it’s all-natural and safe for your plants. Neem coats the leaves, making it harder for pests to penetrate them. One of the most common and frustrating pests that like to come pay your outdoor grow a visit is the dreaded caterpillar. These usually cute and harmless bugs like to burrow through your stalks, sometimes even causing your stalk to break. They also like the taste of your sweet flowers. This is good news for the entire hydroponics community because, although they should still be used with caution, organic pesticides are much safer than their conventional counterparts. The latest advancements in organic pest control have come from our ability to identify and isolate particular organic compounds and innovative technologies used in extraction methods. Many “new” organic pesticides are derived from herbs or plants that have been used as homemade insecticides for years. By isolating the particular compounds within these herbs or plants and then concentrating them or combining them with one another, scientists are deciphering the safest and most effective possible pest controls. A closer look at some of today’s most popular organic pesticides will give a better understanding of the recent advancements made in organic pest management.

When garlic is cut, crushed or processed properly, it activates a special enzyme, alliinase. This enzyme metabolizes alliin contained within the garlic into allicin. Allicin is a powerful biologically active compound that has a natural fungicidal property and also acts as an effective contact insecticide. Although products containing garlic extracts have the ability to kill on contact, it seems to be most effective as a fungicide. Manufacturers are finding benefit in combining garlic extracts with other plant extracts to maximize the effectiveness of garlic’s insecticidal properties.

CLOVE OIL Clove oil is comprised mainly of eugenol, a clear or yellowish oily liquid that gives cloves their distinct aroma. Eugenol works as an effective contact killer on a wide variety of insects. It also has become a popular additive to many plant-based insecticides due to its pleasant odor. As with many organic products, clove oil’s insecticidal effectiveness is entirely dependent on the source of clove oil and the way it’s processed. Manufacturers who use fresh cloves combined with cold extraction processes will retain the highest concentration of eugenol, making these products most effective as insecticides. Manufacturers who use dried cloves or harsh chemical extraction processes will produce an end product that may be effective as a deterrent but is ineffective as a contact killer.

ROSEMARY EXTRACTS Special compounds found in rosemary block the octopamine receptors of many insect varieties. Octopamine receptors are specific to insects and are very similar to receptors found in a vertebrate’s central nervous system. In other words, these receptors allow for most of the insect’s functions. When an insect comes in contact with rosemary extract, it usually becomes immobile. The fatty acids within rosemary extract also contain salts that

disrupt the permeability of the insect’s cells. This causes the cell to leak its contents, thus killing the insect. Rosemary extract works great as a contact killer on a wide variety of insects, including spider mites.

CINNAMON OIL The cinnamon oil ingredients identified to have the greatest insecticidal properties are trans-cinnamaldehyde and trans-cinnamic acid. Transcinnamaldehyde and transcinnamic acid have the ability to disrupt an insect’s neurotransmitters. This will immediately cause the insects to flee or die. Cinnamon oil extracts are generally not sold individually, but are usually combined with other plant extracts to increase effectiveness. Cinnamon oil should be used with caution; in high concentrations it will cause severe leaf burn.

THYME OIL Thyme oil contains thymol, a compound associated with thyme’s unique aroma. Thymol has been shown to have insecticidal properties on a wide variety of pests, including cutworms and thrips. As with clove oil, the extraction method is key to preserving the effectiveness of thyme oil’s active compound.

SPINOSAD Spinosad is an organic compound based on the bacterial species Saccharopolyspora spinosa. These specialized bacteria disrupt the nervous system of many different insects. However, spinosad’s effectiveness varies depending on the insect variety and the particular stage of the life cycle the insect is in. Spinosad seems to work best on the larvae stage of most insects. Outdoor growers can take advantage of spinosad’s effectiveness on caterpillars.

AZADIRACHTIN Azadirachtin is the isolated compound found within neem oil. It is the concentrated azadirachtin that makes neem oil an effective insecticide. Azadirachtin naturally functions as a deterrent. If insects sense azadirachtin on the leaf surface, they will go elsewhere. Azadirachtin also works as a growth regulator by compromising an insect’s ability to molt. This means that eggs can’t hatch, larvae won’t turn into adults and the life cycle of the insect is broken. Most importantly, azadirachtin works as an anti-ovipositor. Insects will refuse to lay their eggs if they sense azadirachtin.

FREQUENCYINFUSED WATER The most intriguing of all the new organic pesticide breakthroughs is frequency-infused water. These pesticides are based on the findings of Royal Raymond Rife from the 193040s. Rife found that pathogens can be weakened or destroyed by energetically exciting destructive resonances in their constituent chemicals. In other words, all things contain resonance or frequencies that, when matched or excited, can be used to alter or destroy them. The best example of this phenomenon is when an opera singer breaks a crystal glass with her voice. As soon as the pitch of the singer’s voice matches the destructive frequency of the glass, the glass will shatter. Now think of the pest insect as the crystal glass. If we are able to match the destructive frequency of the pest insect, then we are able to destroy it. This is the line of thinking behind frequency-infused water technology. These nimble mammals may be cute and fuzzy, but this savage beast is capable of cutting down high-value crops faster than you can say “Bambi.” Spray a liquid deer deterrent around your garden, or surround the garden with electric fencing or deer netting. DEER

These slimy mollusks will strip small plants down to stalks and completely obliterate seedlings. Preemptively create a barrier of protection (slug poison, copper ribbon, etc.) to prevent slug problems. Found in zones 2-8. Most problematic in northern and southeastern regions.

ne of the nice things about growing outdoors is the free sun and water. However, many outdoor growers prefer to control their water supply personally, especially in locales where the summer may be an especially wet and stormy season. Our plants need water, but they don’t need to drown. Using planter boxes or other raised gardens helps to facilitate water drainage and avoid water-borne pathogens. However, if an outdoor grower wants to also protect those precious plants from the elements above the soil level, a rainwater cover can be a good option. Even better, your cover can serve double duty as a rainwatercollection system so there’s plenty of high-quality H2O for those dry days. And you can make it yourself in an afternoon.

STEP 1: PLACE YOUR PVC PIPES

In order to make this a water-collection cover, you need to create a spot for water to easily roll right into your collection device, so part of the tarp needs to dip down a bit. This is done by placing two of your poles closer together than the other two. The water will flow down and over the part of the cover that hangs down. Push the PVC pipes as deeply into the soil as you need to make them sturdy. Two pipes should be placed in the corners of the bed.

The other two should be placed three or four inches from the side of the bed.

WHAT YOU NEED STEP 2: PLACE YOUR COVER

If you only need to cover the top, add in a water-collection bin below that dip and you are ready to go. However, most rain does not fall straight down, so you may want to include side flaps to this design as a protective measure.

Four PVC pipes (the stronger the better). 2” is a good width; height will depend on your plants; 4-5 feet is usually good.

To attach the side flaps, you can either secure them from one end to the other with tarp tape, or cut the tarp to fit your dimensions. Good tarp tape can repair a ripped tarp as long as you properly tape the side panels. The side of the tarp that hangs lower will cause a little bit of overlap on either side of its protective side flap, but that’s fine. Avoid taping the sides to one another (if you feel that you need to connect them, consider Velcro) because you will want to be able to fold the flaps up for ventilation.

STEP 3: PUT IT ALL TOGETHER

Waterproof tarp at least as large as the garden.

One roll of all-weather tarp tape.

Your completed rain cover should look something like this. We tested the design in a pretty heavy deluge of water and it held up like a champ. Just be sure that you get the strongest “schedule” (tensile strength) of PVC pipe, and plant those poles firmly.

eneficial bacteria are not a base food for your plants. A lot of folks see these higher-priced items at the hydro store and think, “Is that really needed?” You can see where these guys are coming from. Figure that you are already giving your plants base nutrients, bud enhancers, carbohydrates and probably several other products to encourage crop performance. So why then do you need to add beneficial bacteria? Isn’t the plant getting all it needs? The answer is yes; the plant is getting what it needs. But what about what it wants? Beneficial bacteria serve many purposes, foremost of which is to supercharge your plants’ appetite and growth. You see, when you add these products, the plant can respond in big ways. These products are basically the difference between a mediocre basketball player and Kobe Bryant. Kobe can afford the top supplements, the best workout equipment and the most skilled trainers. This certainly gives him an advantage at game time. It’s very much the same with plants. NAUGHTY NUTRIENTS POPULAR PRODUCTS PULLED FROM SHELVES AMID SAFETY CONCERNS BY MAR S EA TR UAN

f you have been to your local hydroponic store lately and noticed a few popular items missing from the shelves, you’re not going crazy. Most stores have voluntarily removed at least five plant supplements from their shelves. And while there has been a lot of chatter on message boards about this, there still seems to be a lot of partial or incorrect information going around. So why were these products removed, and is it safe to use them if you have them already? Let’s clear it up.

THE PROBLEM WITH SOME PGRS The products affected in this recall are ones that contain a synthetic version of plant growth regulators, or PGRs. Scientifically, these chemicals affect three types of plant hormones that control various aspects of plant growth: gibberellins, auxins and cytokinins. Typically, these PGRs are used on grass or ornamental plants to either slow or stop vertical growth. They’ve also been used in the past on fruits like apples to keep them from ripening too quickly and help them stay crunchy for long-distance transport. In this instance it was discovered through independent lab research by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) that several products contained undisclosed levels of two toxic PGRs, paclobutrazol (typically called paclo) and daminozide (also known as alar), in violation of federal law regarding labeling of nutrients. Both chemicals have been shown in studies by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to have adverse health effects when consumed, and neither are approved for use in either the U.S. or UK on consumable products. These concoctions were advertised as nutrients that keep your plants short and bushy and your flowers thick and dense. In the absence of the federally mandated warning, it’s tempting to use these products that you believe will give you a leg up on the competition. Without knowing the possible harm, why wouldn’t you use a “nutrient?” Daminozide, the one that was most commonly used to preserve fruit, has been banned since 1989 for use on anything other than ornamental plants because it has been deemed a likely carcinogen, with other unknown health effects when consumed. Makes you feel pretty good about all that fruit you ate prior to 1989, doesn’t it? Paclo has been shown to cause cancer and massive liver damage in rats, and the EPA has not approved it for use in anything consumable. These chemicals are intended for use in ornamental plants and grass, period. Yet the offending companies not only included these PGRs in products that they knew would be used for consumable plants, they failed to warn consumers, and many charged over $100 per liter. That’s one pricey poison.

The issue is that only products that were found to contain undisclosed PGRs were pulled from most shelves, so there are likely still some of these dangerous substances lurking in your local hydro store. One to be aware of is General Hydroponics’ Bush Load. Bush Load contains paclo, but GH does at least have the decency to tell consumers that its product contains this potentially harmful chemical, and also offers a warning in its brochure that reads: “Warning: Bush Load is for expert use only. Contact GH for usage recommendations.” One would hope that those recommendations include: “Do not use this product on anything you plan to consume!” However, while Bush Load remains in most hydroponic stores (some have pulled it, label be damned), several popular growth-inhibiting or flower-hardening products have been pulled from most stores in the U.S., EU and Canada because they contain one or both of these dangerous PGRs yet said nothing about them on the label.

Growers are pretty familiar with vague nutrient labels, as some companies make nutes that contain proprietary formulas or are limited to what beneficial ingredients they can include on their labels by outdated regulations. However, vague labeling can also hide ingredients that companies would prefer you not know about. Such is the case with Emerald Triangle’s Bush Master and Gravity, both of which contain relatively high levels of paclo (271 ppm and 516 ppm, respectively), along with Dutch Master’s Phosphoload and Green Planet Wholesale’s Top Load (which, as far as we can tell, has been pulled by the company, as it is not available on its website anymore). Phosphoload contains a whopping 17,800 ppm (no, that’s not a typo) of daminozide and 20.6 ppm of paclo; Top Load contains more than 3,000 ppm of daminozide. Perhaps the most egregious example of misleading labels is the case of a product called Flower Dragon, whose slick packaging and catchy name attempted to push what would appear to be a basic P-K (phosphorus and potassium) supplement, commonly used during the flowering phase to increase size and density of flowers. However, when investigated, Flower Dragon actually doesn’t contain much phosphorus or potassium (645 ppm P, 2,490 ppm K), yet the solution had a massively high ppm reading. Clearly there was at least one unlabeled mystery ingredient. The answer was found during those laboratory tests, when researchers determined that in addition to its small quantities of P and K, Flower Dragon

contains over 18,000 ppm of daminozide. In reality, this chemical, which is banned for use in most of the plants for which Flower Dragon was marketed, was the main ingredient, yet it appeared nowhere on the label.

BUT DOESN’T FLUSHING REMOVE ALL THIS JUNK? The quick answer is no. Flushing will mostly remove salts that have built up in your plants, but chemicals like paclo and alar are not flushed thoroughly, or sometimes not at all. This is one of the reasons why certain nutrients, pesticides and other chemicals should not be used more than a few weeks into the vegetative stage, and not at all during flowering, the beginning of which is when these products are meant to be applied. A good flush is an absolute must for quality hydroponic plants. However, when you don’t put crap into them in the first place, you don’t have to attempt its removal. Anecdotally, many growers have complained of unpleasant taste from plants grown using these chemicals. PGRs may be effective at regulating growth and keeping plants short and bushy most of the time, but at what cost? There are other ways to keep your plants small and ensure a bountiful harvest, including controlling light, training and topping, and using a bud bulker like Advanced Nutrients Big Bud®. Big Bud, along with several other AN products, was also tested by the CDFA and was found to not contain paclo or alar.

SO HOW DO I KNOW IF MY NUTES ARE SAFE? The main thing that you want to pay attention to is whether you are buying any product that is marketed to keep your plants short and bushy, or your flowers thick and tight. There are companies like Advanced Nutrients whose entire line of products have tested negative for any of these potentially harmful ingredients, so you are good to go with any of their stuff. But other companies make perfectly safe nutrients as well. What’s important is to do your research. Start with the bottle itself (the more honest companies like GH tell you right there), and then get online and conduct more research. If you do not get satisfactory results from the Web, call the company’s customer service number. If they don’t have one, or they take a message and never call you back, just move on. We’ll give you a hint though: If the product is meant to inhibit growth in some way, it likely contains a plant growth regulator. Your best bet is to stick with known safe methods until (and if) we discover a plant growth regulator that is proven safe for consumable plants.

ne of the biggest challenges growers face outdoors is the heat. Even in climates as mild as Central and Northern California, temperatures can reach over 100°F (38°C) outdoors. And if the internal temperature of your plants reaches 85°F (30°C), they are already beginning to feel significant stress. At 95°F (35°C), major photosynthetic processes begin slowing, if not completely shutting down. Of course, the external temperature and the internal temperature aren’t necessarily the same. Just because it’s 96°F outside doesn’t mean that your plants are cooking inside. But that is exactly why it’s important to manage your root zone well—so that despite external conditions, your plants stay cool, stressfree and productive.

PLANT WELL-BEING BEGINS IN THE RHIZOSPHERE Besides inoculating the rhizosphere (root zone) with beneficial bacteria, microbes and sugars (fuel for the bacteria and microbes), your best bet for managing a plant’s stress levels from within the rhizosphere is a capable B-vitamin supplement. Air conditioning is one of the most complex and costly parts of an indoor growing operation. Knowing the facts can mean the difference between a profitable operation and a very expensive error. That’s why Rosebud got the straight scoop from Brandon Burkhart, the owner of Hydroponics Inc., the makers of the Aura Systems line of split A/C units designed specifically for grow rooms. Rosebud: This is an incredible unit. Tell me a little bit about it. Brandon Burkhart: We’ve got four basic models: 12,000 BTU; 18,000 BTU; 24,000 BTU and 36,000 BTU. The question most growers ask is which unit they need for their particular setup. Each model cools up to a different wattage [of lights in your grow room]. We recommend 3.6 BTUs per watt for growers using a vented hood on their lights and 5.5 BTUs per watt without a hood. So when you’re doing the calculation, here’s the breakdown: On a 12,000-BTU unit, you’ve got 3.6 BTUs per watt, so it’ll cool 3,000 watts, vented. It doesn’t matter if you’re using 600- or 1,000-watt lights. You just want to make sure you’re using 3,000 watts total.

Wow, so you could cool up to 10,000 watts of lights. What really intrigued me is that you guys are the only ones making an air conditioner that stands up to the 24-hour pounding of heat that we all produce with our grow lights. What did you do differently to make this thing so good at standing up to all that energy? Mainly what we did was make sure we have high-quality internals. We use Japanese internals, pure copper line sets and Toshiba

compressors. We offered some units with different functions specifically for your grow room, like our shut-off LCD display screen on your indoor unit, or our new quickconnect units that just came out, which are killer, especially for guys on the East Coast or Midwest who want to install their A/C by themselves, without having an HVAC guy come to their house or anything like that. It makes it real simple; it’s just plug-and-play. Your line sets are already vacuumed down so you don’t have to do any of that. It’s ready to go. And for the guys out there who just want to hire an A/C guy to handle it, we offer nonquick-connect. In the grow industry, we’re the first mini-split company to offer that. A lot of growers I know like to do everything on their own. So providing the option for a guy to install his own air conditioner, by himself, no HVAC guy needed, is a no-brainer to me. Can you guys tell us a little bit more about some of the other features? We have a pre-charged condenser, so you don’t have to bring it out there and charge

Cooling or a condensate pump, and just pump that water wherever you’d like. Some guys use the water because you’ve got like 13 to 15 PPM on the water coming out of the unit. We don’t recommend it. There are other things in there that you probably don’t want to feed your plants, so we recommend just throwing that water away.

it; it’s all ready to go for life. We offer 25-foot line sets for installation, one-year warranty on parts, five-year on the compressor. Can’t go wrong. All Japanese, all ready to go. Another huge thing is the auto-restart. You’re able to plug it into a controller and it auto-restarts. So as soon as the power comes back on, or the unit gets power, it’ll automatically restart. I don’t know if a lot of people know the difference between your conventional, regular portable unit and the benefits of going with a ductless mini-split. It’s a massive difference because, on a portable unit, it sits in your room, so it’s taking up ground space. That’s area you could use for growing. You can be making money right there. Not only that, but regular A/Cs have your duct in and duct out. So you’ve got hot air coming through your tubes and going out into the attic. It’s heating up your attic, you’re heating up your duct tubes, and in turn heating up your room. The A/C is actually working against itself. With the ductless mini-split, it’s completely sealed. Air comes in from the top of the unit and goes out from the bottom, with a 25-degree temperature drop. In turn, you’re not having CO2 leaving your room. Unwanted smells stay inside the room. You’re not blowing air out of your room. It’s definitely the way to go when you’re trying to cool off some lights. A lot of people don’t realize how efficient they are. Some of our units are rated at 13 SEER; others are even 15 SEER rated.

[For example], I can go buy a window unit, 24,000 BTU for 700 bucks. It’s going to cost me 1,500-1,600 bucks to buy the 24,000BTU Aura, or any other mini-split. But, that first six months to a year of you running it nonstop, all the time, you’re going to save so much money on your energy bill that it’s going to make up for it tenfold by the time you’re done using the unit. It’s the only way to go when you’re trying to cool your grow room, hands down. Window shakers, like the ones that mount inside of the windows or walls, use up to 20% of their own cooling power just cooling themselves, which is pretty inefficient. As far as the portable units, those tubes coming out the back are so hot that you can feel the heat radiating around them. I’ve heard that they can take up to 30% of their own energy just cooling themselves. So a 12,000-BTU air conditioner is effectively like 9,000. That’s not doing a lot of cooling. Also, for growers who live in cold states, we offer a heat pump in our system. So if you need heat in your room during the wintertime, we offer that as well. If I’m understanding correctly, this thing will serve as a dehumidifier to some degree, with its own radiator. Yeah, it’s got a dehumidifying function. It’s got a dry function already built into the remote, so you can put it on dry mode. You have your condensation line built in. You can let the water go into a bucket, a trashcan or whatever,

Lastly, they’re very quiet units. Extremely quiet. You turn this thing on right now and we could have a full conversation. You wouldn’t even know it’s on. Both our inside and our outside units are quiet. It’s made for growing. Period. That is so rad, and needed in this industry. Where do I go to buy one? You can get one at pretty much any local hydro shop. If you’re a hydro shop owner, you can get them through Aura, Hydrofarm, Great Lakes Garden Wholesale and Rambridge is going to be carrying them. Air conditioners cool your grow with brute force. But they can come with a brutal energy bill. Many indoor growers are exploring the benefits of water chillers as a way to keep their crop cool and their costs down. To learn more, we spoke with experts from two companies that know a lot about chillers — Hydro Innovations and Current Culture — to learn how these devices can keep temperatures in check, both in your grow room and in your hydroponic system itself.

GO WITH THE FLOW INTERVIEW WITH HYDRO INNOVATIONS Hydro Innovations manufactures the Chillking® line of water chillers. Brandy Keen, the company’s Vice President of Customer Relations, explains how chillers help you get a grip on your garden temperature. Rosebud: What are the benefits of water-cooling your grow room? Brandy Keen: On average, water-cooling is about 30% more efficient than traditional air conditioning, even with a high-SEER A/C system. This is because the heat capacity of water is four times greater than the heat capacity of air. Water can absorb four times as many BTUs as air before it increases in temperature. The compressor on the chiller system will come on less often than the compressor on an A/C unit because the water in the system will stay cold for a longer period of time than air when the same amount of BTUs are absorbed. This means that you will actually get air conditioning out of a chiller system even when the compressor isn’t running. Water-cooling systems also allow you to run a truly sealed environment because you can recirculate the air in the garden instead of introducing air from outside the garden. This conserves CO2 and reduces the introduction of pests and pathogens. Lastly, using a chiller system instead of a traditional air conditioner can allow you to use a single piece of cooling equipment for air conditioning, cooling your lights and chilling your nutrients. A lot of people view water-cooling as being complicated. What are your thoughts? Water-cooling can be as simple or as complicated as you’d like to make it. Often, it’s as simple as a single cold water line in and a second warm water line out. The manufacturers of water-cooling systems in our industry are usually happy to draw the plumbing plan for you and can even build the water-distribution manifolds for you if that’s your preference.

I have run this system before and I got a lot of condensation. Why does that happen? Condensation is essentially dehumidification. It’s what happens when the water vapor in the air condenses into liquid form. This will happen any time your water temperature is set lower than the dew point temperature in the room (and is actually how an air handler in a water-cooled system provides dehumidification). The dew point temperature is a product of the relative humidity and the ambient temperature. If you leave your water temperature lower than the dew point temperature to encourage dehumidification, simply insulate the cold water lines with black plumbers’ insulation to discourage condensation on those lines. Otherwise, reduce your humidity and/or increase your water temperature to eliminate condensation altogether. Generally speaking, if your humidity is controlled around 50%, condensation is a non-issue.

“With a chiller and the proper heat exchangers, your watercooled system can handle every single cooling need you have.” Is there a savings over traditional cooling methods? Absolutely. While a chiller and a high-SEER A/C will typically consume the same amount of power while they’re running, the chiller will run far less often to achieve the same results, which will result in a dramatically lower electric bill. How do I control the room temps using the Ice Box setup? This will vary somewhat depending on humidity and cooling needs in your specific space, but generally speaking, Ice Boxes will need to run at 55-65°F and air handlers will need to run at 45-55°F. And I can use this system in place of air conditioning, right? Absolutely. With a chiller and the proper heat exchangers, your water-cooled system can handle every single cooling need you have.

Cooling What is the rule of thumb for how much chiller power I need for the amount of lights I’m running? Again, this will vary based on your specific cooling needs but is between a quarter-ton and half-ton per 1,000-watt light. A quarterton per light will usually handle the light heat but nothing else. A half-ton per 1,000 watts will usually handle the light heat and all of the ambient air conditioning as well. If you are in an especially hot climate, round up. If you are in a cool climate, round down. Are marine chillers the same thing compared to the custom grow room chillers? The chillers commonly used for aquariums (or nutrient cooling) are intended for that purpose only. They are excellent for their specific application. However, when you are asking a chiller to cool an entire garden, a more commercial chiller is needed. Chillking and Banks Chiller Systems are heavy-duty, energy-efficient and are intended for this type of use. If you choose to use these other types of chiller in your garden, you should purchase something at least 25% bigger than you think you’ll need to compensate for the lower efficiency. What’s wrong with the aquarium chillers out there? Why wouldn’t they be able to handle the heat? Nothing is “wrong” with those chillers. It’s just intended for a different purpose. When a chiller says it’s good for, let’s say 250 gallons of water, it means it can hold 250 gallons of water at a specific set point against ambient heat absorption only. When you start absorbing all of the heat produced by your lights and other equipment into that water, it requires far more power to keep it cool. Remember, cooling is not its own energy — cooling is simply the removal of thermal energy. So a chiller isn’t adding cold to water, it’s removing heat. All chillers are limited by how much heat they can remove. A 1-hp chiller from Hydro Innovations is rated for 12,000 BTUs of heat removal (and usually does about 14,000 BTUs at

QC check). A 1-hp nutrient or marine chiller usually does about 9,000 BTUs. This is a dramatic difference. Could I use my chiller indoors? Remember that when we cool things, what we’re really doing is removing heat. So the water absorbs the heat from the room, then the chiller removes the heat from the water. That heat ultimately exhausts out the back of your chiller. Like any other piece of cooling equipment, if it’s kept in an exceptionally hot environment, it won’t perform as well. Traditional air conditioners usually begin to lose efficiency when the environment reaches 85°F. Chillers will last a bit longer — usually around 100°F — before experiencing significant performance degradation.

So it’s best to keep your chiller outdoors and in a shaded area if possible. If that’s not possible, they can be kept indoors with the proper venting. There are also window-mount options available for chillers up to two tons. Always keep your chiller out of the garden, though. Some of the chillers you sell are really big. It would seem conspicuous next to my house. Do you have anything smaller coming out? We have a new line of chillers called Banks Chiller Systems that use the same condenser housing as a traditional split A/C system. They are indistinguishable from an air conditioner from the outside and would look “normal” outside of any residence. Can I cycle my pump on and off to save a little electricity? As long as the chiller is powered, the pump should also be running. When you turn your

chiller off is the only time it’s safe to turn the pump off. Should I turn my chiller off with my lights during the dark cycle? You certainly can, but we don’t recommend it. When your lights are off, there is no heat load on the chiller, so even though it’s powered on, it won’t run because there is no heat to be removed. Therefore, turning it off when the lights are out is usually unnecessary. What if I buy the recommended system and it still isn’t cooling my room? What are some other things to look at? Air speed, water-flow rates and insufficient heat exchangers are usually the culprit in this kind of situation. If you got the correct chiller but your room isn’t cool enough, there are usually minor modifications you can make to the setup that will result in dramatic changes. Before you go out and buy another chiller, contact your water-cooling manufacturer and tell them about your setup so they can recommend minor tweaks to get your system running at peak performance. You can always tell if it’s the chiller or the setup that’s causing the problem by checking your water temperature and chiller run time. If your water temperature is being maintained and the chiller is cycling off, your chiller is not the problem. If the chiller runs constantly and/or water temperature is increasing, you probably need a bigger chiller. If this is the case, there are likely sources of heat in the space that weren’t accounted for in the beginning. What do I do if my chiller goes down? Is there a backup? Absolutely. Just incorporate a fresh-water bypass into your plumbing system, which allows you to connect a water hose to your water-cooling system and use your municipal supply for short-term cooling if your chiller needs service. In most circumstances, commercial chillers can be serviced by refrigeration technicians all over the country, so they can be repaired very quickly if it becomes necessary.

CHILL OUT TRICKS Here are a couple of down-and-dirty ways to cool your grow with items you might already have lying around:

SODA BOTTLES

Did you know that you can freeze a 2-liter soda bottle and use it to cool your reservoir? Rotate two bottles between your freezer and reservoir daily for fast and easy cooling of your nutes. Just remember to leave room at the top of the bottle for when the water freezes and expands.

SURFACE COOLING

Aim a wall fan at a cold body of water and bounce the air off the surface. This works great when you have a chilled reservoir or you have half-buried your reservoir.

COOL RUNNINGS INTERVIEW WITH CURRENT CULTURE Chillers can control the air temperature of your indoor grow op. But they can also improve the performance of your nutrient solution. Christian Long, Vice President of Current Culture (makers of the popular Under Current hydroponic system), explains why your crop prefers a nice cool nutrient cocktail. Rosebud: So what is the idea of a chiller, and how is it used? Christian Long: We’ve found over the years that to get the best results out of water culture, it is imperative that you use a water chiller to maintain the cooler water temps for two reasons. The first is that we get the highest levels of dissolved oxygen at water temperatures of about 65-68°F, and the second is that it creates an environment where it is difficult for bacteria and pathogens to thrive and reproduce. I know I’ve read several times that water under 70°F maintains 30% more dissolved oxygen. That seems like quite a bit. Yeah, it’s really an exponential number too. For every degree that the water goes up, its ability to hold onto the oxygen goes down exponentially.

UNDERGROUND RESERVOIR

In most places the ground maintains a pretty steady temperature in the mid-60s. Bury your reservoir to get year-round cooling of your nutrients for no cost at all.

AIR-COOLING

Air-cooling is both cheap and efficient and only requires one fan (in most cases). Hook up a high-powered fan to your wall in order to exhaust the room of heated air, while a passive vent on the other side of the room allows colder air into the room.

Cooling I run my system in the lower 60s, like 64°F, because by the time it gets to bucket No. 16 it’s a little warmer, you know? You’re getting a full turnover about every 10 minutes, so as water makes its way from one end to another it probably goes up a few degrees. So yeah, I think mid- to low-60s. Once you start getting down to the low 60s you could slow metabolism. But once you get up into the 70s you’re opening the door for the pathogens and bacteria. Are there other benefits of keeping the chiller set like this? When you’re chilling your entire system volume, which, depending on the size could be a pretty large volume of water, it acts like a giant heat sink in your room. So it even allows you to maybe run a little bit warmer room temperature because you’ve got this nice cool body of water that’s sitting in your room. We often have growers that will use the little infrared thermometers and they’ll take a reading right off the leaf tent and it’s consistently three to five degrees lower than a plant in a container. As that plant is pulling up that cool water and transpiring it, it’s cooling the whole plant down as well as helping to cool the entire room. We don’t point that out very often, but it’s definitely something that’s interesting. Outdoor plants in Santa Rosa, California, will hit 108°F during the summer. But their roots are embedded in 68°F soil, so they can handle it. Exactly. Should chillers be used in ebb-and-flow systems? Anywhere where there’s a large volume of water that you’re aerating, you’re going to get the benefits of a water chiller. We have some standalone DWC systems where it’s not as imperative because the water isn’t moving. But I think any hydroponic system where there’s a large body of water, you can see the benefit of the chiller.

And is there a chiller that you guys recommend over other ones? I’m going to say Chillking, obviously, on the commercial side. And then I’ll probably give a shout out to the Eco Plus and the Active Aqua from Hydrofarm.

“SALT BUILDUPS ARE THE REASON WHY YOU WOULD ADVISE AGAINST PUMPING SYSTEM WATER DIRECTLY INTO YOUR CHILLER.” How do you install a chiller? For us, you basically just need to pump water from the reservoir into the chiller and then from the chiller back to the reservoir. So for us, because our system circulates and there’s a circulation pump, it’s extremely easy to install a chiller.

One thing to note is that each chiller has a specific flow ratio that it’s looking for. You’re going to want to consult your manufacturer’s recommendation. What are the downsides of running system water through the chiller as opposed to using a coil and keeping it entirely segregated? Salt buildups are the reason why you would advise against pumping system water directly into your chiller. Most of the nutrients we recommend are mineral-salt-based. It depends on the type of metal that’s inside the chiller — some of them are copper, some of them are stainless, some of them are titanium. All of those metals react differently to the mineral salt. We see that most of them on the market now are using stainless or titanium, which don’t really react to the minerals. What would be the best product for breaking down these salts? Any salt-leeching solutions or greenhouse disinfectants would probably do the job. Anything that’s going to break down scale or mineral buildups. What about something like Final Phase or Clearex? That’s kind of what I was thinking when I said “salt-leeching.” Why wouldn’t you guys recommend using a coil? Is it because of the extra cost? Yeah. Really the only time we do recommend coils is if somebody has more than one system they’re trying to chill with only one chiller. How do you gauge the right amount of chiller? The first thing I would do is look at your desired water temp. Say your desired water temp is 68°F and your room temp is 78°F. You’re going to have to chill the water about 10°F. They rate most of the chillers that way. It will say it does 100 gallons/10 degrees or 50 gallons/20 degrees. Make sure that the chiller is adequate to chill the total number of degrees for the room temp and the water temp for the total volume of their system.

In 2008, Lolo Jones, wearing a skin-tight Nike uniform emblazoned with the American flag, crouched down in preparation to run the 100-meter hurdles at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. It was the moment she had been training for her entire life. She had already won the USA Indoor Championships and the European winter circuit and was favored to win at the Olympics as well. She spent her childhood homeless, anonymous. Now, she was dressed in a $1,000 Nike running outfit, the eyes of the world upon her.

Jones is of Native American, African, French and Norwegian descent, a combination that has yielded the natural beauty of an A-list celebrity. But when she was younger, she was teased because of her hair and Salvation Army clothes. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Jones spent the first 18 years of her life without a steady home, moving from apartment to apartment, school to school, because her single mother had five kids and no means of paying rent. For a while, the family lived in a church basement, a living arrangement Jones tried to hide. “I would sneak upstairs before the other kids came around,” she told the Chicago Tribune. Jones excelled in track in high school, winning a scholarship to the powerhouse Louisiana State University. There she had an illustrious career, ranking among the top three women of all time in both the 60-meter hurdles and 100-meter hurdles. Failing to make the U.S. team for the Athens Olympics in 2004 motivated Jones to train even harder. She took humble jobs to pay for training: a hostess at a restaurant, a personal trainer at a gym, an employee of Home Depot. To save extra cash, she’d turn off the air conditioning in her apartment and roast in the Louisiana heat. Using failure as fuel became a part of her outlook on life, an outlook that would be tested yet again in Beijing.

As the starting shot went off, Jones exploded into the lead, flying over eight hurdles with ease. But as she approached the ninth hurdle, her technique faltered. Extending her right foot forward, she hit the top of the ninth hurdle and stumbled slightly upon landing. It was a millisecond slip-up, but enough to cost her dearly. As she steadied herself, six competitors raced ahead of her. She fell from first to seventh place in the blink of an eye, her gold medal dreams dashed. According to a documentary by the SEC (an annual sports conference), Jones’ “clipping” was due to a spinal injury that affected the way her brain processed sensation in her feet. A doctor who treated Jones claimed her brain didn’t know where her feet were. Jones suffered the sting of defeat, but she knew she would heal. “I want to go home and cry and hide in my house,” Jones told a reporter from the Associated Press after the race. “But I’m just going to go out there and keep running. I’m just going to, you know, try to get faster.” After Beijing, Jones won and lost competitions in almost equal measure. It was as if the universe wanted to give her just enough wins to persevere, but not enough to ever feel comfortable. She triumphed in Germany and England, then injured her hamstring and missed the world championships in Berlin. Then in Doha, Qatar, she set a new American record. As Jones found her way back to the winners’ podium, the media took a renewed interest. Jones is the kind of athlete the public can relate to. On Twitter, she had a natural rapport with fans, joking about everything from

her weight to her dating life. “Alone at home and I got a surprise visit from Drug Testers,” read one tweet from 2012. “Not mad they showed up, I’m mad they knew I’d be home on Friday night #single.” In the lead-up to the 2012 Olympics, Jones landed cover stories on ESPN and Outdoors magazines. But not everyone was pleased that Jones had become a media darling. A few days before she was set to compete in the 2012 Olympics in London, the New York Times ran a hit job on her, saying the attention placed on Jones was not based on her talent but on her “exotic beauty” and was a “sad and cynical marketing campaign.” Commentator Jere

“IF BOBSLED BROUGHT ME ONE THING, IT BROUGHT ME PEACE AND I WAS ABLE TO JUST GET AWAY.” Longman wrote, “Jones has decided she will be whatever anyone wants her to be — vixen, virgin, victim — to draw attention to herself and the many products she endorses.” The Times even suggested she’d embellished her childhood misfortunes. Essentially, the paper was saying that Jones was a fraud. Two days later, Jones placed fourth at the London Olympics. In an interview on The Today Show, she responded to the Times article. “They should be supporting our U.S. Olympic athletes and instead they just ripped me to shreds,” she said tearfully. But instead of wallowing after the media firestorm and

her disappointing finish, Jones chose a new path. In October 2012, she joined the U.S. bobsled team, offering her incredible speed to be utilized as a pusher for the four-person team. She moved from asphalt to ice, lone star to team player. Jones is certainly not the first high-profile athlete to test her abilities in a different sport. Think back to Michael Jordan’s season as a baseball player or Bo Jackson’s famous career in both the NFL and MLB. But the move shocked sports fan around the world because of Jones’ candor about the decision. “If I won a freakin’ medal — if I won any medal — I would not be a bobsledder,” she told HBO’s Real Sports. That motivation might come off as unseemly to purists, but it’s a drive that has to be respected for its singular determination. Jones also loved that, as the bobsled’s pusher, she wouldn’t receive nearly as much attention. That, and she could eat all the junk food she wanted. She bulked up from 133 pounds to over 150. She feels “Hercules strong,” she told USA Today. “If bobsled brought me one thing, it brought me peace and I was able to just get away,” Jones told Sports Illustrated. “I could have just hid out in my house, but with bobsled I was able to actually get out of my house and go to the French Alps, Swiss Alps and just be one of them — a USA bobsled teammate and nothing else.” Jones helped the team win gold at the world championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Now she’s back on the track, ready to take another shot at gold. “I’m inspired by failure,” she says. “The process of defeat — picking yourself back up again is the hardest thing in the world.”

MONSANTO KEEPS MARCHING DESPITE MASSIVE PROTEST, THE LATEST GMO NEWS IS PREDICTABLY PREDICTABLE BY K.E. BORG

On May 25, millions of people staged rallies in cities worldwide against agrochemical giant Monsanto, one of the key producers of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). March on Monsanto comes on the heels of the hugely unpopular “Monsanto Protection Act,” a rider Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO), a legislator with close ties to Monsanto, slipped into a 587-page farm bill. The rider allows genetically modified (GM) seeds and plants to continue being grown or planted even if a court orders a halt on such activities because of possible health risks to the American public. Increasingly, scientific research suggests that GMOs may pose a health risk not only to the public but also to our ecosystems, yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and many powerful people in Washington continue to insist that the production and consumption of genetically modified products is safe. “Anyone who says, ‘Oh, we know that this is perfectly safe,’ I say is either unbelievably stupid or lying,” remarked geneticist and broadcaster David Suzuki in an April 2005 interview with the Regina Leader-Post. “And now we have become guinea pigs.” That’s because no one knows when they consume genetically modified foods. Despite polls that indicate 92% of Americans support labeling GM foods, on May 23, the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to reject an amendment by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to the same farm bill that would have protected states from lawsuits if they opt to mandate the labeling of GM food and products that contain genetically engineered ingredients. “This particular amendment would interfere with the FDA’s science-based process to determine what food

labeling is necessary for consumers,” said Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), chairwoman of the powerful Agriculture Committee, after the vote. “It’s also important to note that around the world now we are seeing genetically modified crops that have the ability to resist crop diseases and improve nutritional content and survive drought conditions in many developing countries.” Stabenow’s statements perfectly illustrate the lockstep in policy between Big Ag and the federal government at the expense of the American public and countless farmers and consumers around the world. Beginning with President Jimmy Carter in the mid-1970s, successive administrations have endorsed Big Ag and presented the emerging biotech industry and their GMO seeds and pesticides as the answer to world hunger. Monsanto controls 90% of the GM food market and has spent decades

cultivating deep ties to Washington. The same company that brought us Agent Orange and polychlorinated biphenyls—they initially claimed those were safe too—has spent millions of dollars on government lobbying and campaign donations. In 2009 alone, Monsanto had more than 100 paid lobbyists in Washington. The “Big Six” agrichemical companies—Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow AgroSciences, BASF, Bayer and Pioneer (DuPont)—have been able to influence legislators and government officials in unprecedented ways. One answer may lie in the revolving door between the very agencies that are meant to monitor Big Ag and Monsanto’s executives and directors. This highly effective arrangement has resulted in unprecedented legislation being passed that benefits Big Ag, big time.

In May 1992, for instance, Vice President Dan Quayle announced that the nongovernmental Council on Competitiveness had identified GM crops as an industry that could benefit U.S. exports. In keeping with that view, Quayle outlined the government’s intent to “speed up and simplify the process of bringing” these foods to market. The White House directed the FDA to promote biotechnology. In turn, the FDA created a new position for attorney Michael Taylor, former counsel to Monsanto who helped that company draft proposed regulations favoring the nascent biotech industry. As deputy commissioner for policy at the FDA, Taylor could see to it that those regulations were implemented. Later Taylor would become a Monsanto vice president. Not surprisingly, the FDA quickly adopted this policy statement on GM foods: “The agency is not aware of any information showing that foods derived by these new methods differ from other foods in any meaningful or uniform way.” In this way, the FDA assured the public that no safety studies were necessary for the new food technology. “Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety,” the FDA said. Since then, Monsanto and the other five major agriculture companies have determined the safety of their products with little or no oversight by the FDA. Further, Monsanto has attempted to intimidate, discredit and silence scientists, journalists and others whose research exposes health risks associated with GMOs. “Sound scientific procedures for evaluating human safety have been disregarded,” Alexander Apostolou, former director of the FDA’s Division of Toxicology, said in a federal affidavit in the 1990s. “I have faced continuous pressure from my … superiors to reach scientific conclusions favorable to the … industry.” A case in point is Calgene’s Flavr Savr tomato, approved by the FDA in 1993. The public believed since the FDA had approved it, that the tomato was safe to eat. Sales soared. But six years later, Steve Druker,

a public-interest attorney, obtained FDA internal files through a lawsuit that indicate that FDA scientists repeatedly cautioned their superiors that the GMO may have difficult-to-detect and unpredictable side effects with risks to consumers. Calgene’s feeding trials showed that seven of the 40 rats that ate Flavr Savr tomatoes developed stomach lesions. A control group of rats that ate natural

tomatoes developed no lesions. FDA scientists urged caution and long-term feeding trials before approving Flavr Savr. Their superiors at the agency dismissed their concerns. Support for Big Ag extends beyond the realm of GMO. During the George W. Bush administration, the Environmental Protection Agency repealed a rule that held corporate livestock owners liable for environmental damage caused by animal-waste pollution. The agency also dropped a requirement that would have forced facilities to monitor for groundwater pollution from their factory farms. A number of agricultural states are currently considering some type of “ag-gag”

bill that proposes to make it illegal to photograph or film the operations at massive chicken and cattle pens, so-called concentrated animal feeding operations. These efforts have been spearheaded by the American Legislative Exchange Council, a corporate-funded group that works to secure industry-beneficial legislation. It’s easy to see why the ag industry wants mass-production practices to continue unscrutinized. The respected magazine Mother Jones points to a 2010 Food and Drug Administration report on conditions in several vast egg-producing facilities in Iowa. The report cites “flies, maggots, rats, wild birds, tainted feed, workers ignoring sanitary rules, and lots and lots of chicken shit.” The magazine said the report “portrays the facilities as a kind of fecal nightmare, with manure mounding up in eight-foot piles — providing perches for escaped hens to peck feed from teeming cages — overflowing in pits, and seeping through concrete foundations.” The FDA report came after these operations were implicated in a recall of a half a billion eggs due to possible salmonella infection. The Center for Disease Control’s website says, “1,939 illnesses were reported that are likely…associated with this outbreak.” Despite such horrors, U.S. lawmakers continue to churn out tone-deaf legislation favorable to mega-producers and Monsanto at a time when foodborne illnesses are on the rise. But Big Ag legislation just keeps on coming. A less publicized rider was inserted along with the “Monsanto Protection Act” into the March farm bill. eing old enough to have both lived and loved through the turbulent period that was 1964-1967, Jack Cassin decided to collect rare paper ephemera from this era and form an archive that would detail the rise of youth culture in America. Because San Francisco, and the HaightAshbury district in particular, was the epicenter of that culture, it is not surprising that a majority of the material he found originated there. Many readers are likely familiar with the colorful emblematic posters advertising the weekend shows at the Avalon Ballroom and its more famous neighbor the Fillmore. Drawn by artists like Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley and Wes Wilson, the original cardboard posters and thin paper handbills are now avidly collected and cherished. Some of the more famous examples have been published in countless magazine articles and books, granting them iconic status. The much less known and far rarer handbills, screeds and posters in Cassin’s ’60s archive may not have the words Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service or Grateful Dead written on them, but they memorialize the sociopolitical issues of that period, issues that remain as pertinent as they were 50 years ago. Rosebud sat down with Cassin and interviewed him about his archive, his journey as a collector and his motivations for starting that search.

Rosebud: Why did you decide to move to San Francisco in 1990 and begin collecting? Jack Cassin: I have always been a collector, but the ’60s archive is perhaps the closest to me. I lived through the ’60s and was, let’s just say, “turned-on,” so making this collection was natural. I planned to write a book about the ’60s—a period I call the most misunderstood besides the Biblical period—and then came up with the idea of finding and acquiring some posters to use as illustrations in that book.

Rosebud: So is it fair to say that forming your archive became a larger priority? JC: I guess so. I realized the ones to really collect were not music posters but the ones that were non-commercial and dealt with the hot-button issues of the day, like the consciousness movement, civil rights, freedom, gay rights, artist rights and, of course, the Vietnam War protest movement. I also became aware of the roles the Diggers, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and a number of other organizations and individuals played in contributing to the flowering of a time in history that seemed short-lived but still covertly lives on almost 50 years later.

Rosebud: What was the message that lives on? You know, the ’60s were not about sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll that was the ’70s. The ’60s were all about consciousness and freedom. That was the real message, but because that message was so revolutionary, so anti-establishment and anti-commercial, it was purposely buried under a thick veneer of nonsense hedonistic pseudo-revolution.

Rosebud: What are you going to do with your ‘60s archive? JC: Well, I would like to see it stay intact and end up somewhere like the Smithsonian or a museum where others could see and study these incredible reminders of what really happened in those nexus years, 1963-1967, of one of the most important and influential decades of American history.

JACK TELLS THE TALES BEHIND SOME OF HIS FAVORITE POSTERS Around the same time, he also bought a truckload of posters from Chet Helms, who ran the Avalon Ballroom. Postermat was where I bought the first group of posters. Realizing this was the beginning of something that was going to become important in my life, I had Ben memorialize it by signing the poster. Other collectors thought I was nuts to ruin a rare first print by having Ben scribble on it!

GRATEFUL DEAD AT THE FILLMORE Wes Wilson was Bill Graham’s favorite poster artist. That is, up until this one. Wes once told me he went to see Bill and requested a raise, and Graham turned him down. So Wes got annoyed and used this poster to show him who was the boss. Notice the swastika and the big dollar sign at the bottom. Graham did not notice and allowed the poster to go into production. But after the show, when Graham finally took a good look at the poster, he immediately fired Wilson. My copy is inscribed, “For Jack; 8/9/89/ our first business deal/ Ben Friedman San Francisco.” Ben opened a store on Columbus Avenue called Postermat, which housed the 250,000 posters and handbills he bought from Graham.

THE MOUSE/KELLEY BE-IN HANDBILL I went down to Santa Cruz, California, because someone gave me the name of a guy who supposedly had a stash of old posters. He only had some common pieces, but he told me about a friend who probably had something I might like. We drove around for the rest of the afternoon looking for this guy, Casey, with no luck. So I went to find a place to stay for the night, figuring I might as well do some more hunting the next day. I met an antique dealer who had a small shop down near the pier. He said he knew Casey and could probably find him. Seems Casey had hit hard times and was living in a filthy garage where he had all his worldly possessions, including this picture, the original photo Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley used for their iconic Be-In poster and handbill. Casey wanted to give it to me because he said I could take care of it and if I did not take it, he would end up losing or wrecking it. After trying to pay him for it, with no success, I gave the antique dealer who introduced me to Casey $100, under the proviso that he would buy food and some other things for Casey.

And if you look carefully at the Mouse and Kelley piece, you can see it says, “photo: Casey Sonnabend.” Casey shot the photo of the Sadhu, a holy man, when he had been in India!

He, like many of the avatars of the HaightAsbury community, became disgusted and disillusioned after the Summer of Love. Some successfully left and moved into the countryside, banding together as communes. Others got jobs and re-entered the “real world,” and still others were unable to reconcile their radical ideas with the real world and they retreated. Some became yogis, others drug addicts, alcoholics and “buzzaholics,” to use a phrase a dear friend of mine coined, and they disappeared into the closed world of addiction.

The Haight-Ashbury was pretty much surrounded by black communities, and the relations between them were often strained and difficult.

LOVE BOOK THERE IS ONLY 1 DIGGER Before the hordes descended on HaightAshbury in the summer of 1967, a number of locals knew they had to do something to help manage the situation. One of the most present and important of the groups that took on this mission was the Diggers, who modeled themselves after a combination of the 19th-century utopian movement of the same name and Robin Hood’s merry band of men. My archive contains probably the largest collection of Digger paper ephemera. As a true anarchist group, the Diggers had no real leader, and the phrase “There is only one Digger” was promoted to demonstrate this credo. Actually though, a guy named Emmett Grogan was the foremost “head,” and his energy, drive and commitment were remarkable. He was truly everywhere, and without him the Diggers probably would never have been as successful as they were. In the mid ’70s, Emmett supposedly died of a heroin overdose in New York City.

SAN FRANCISCO MIME TROUPE The Mime Troupe was started and run by a guy named Ron Davis, and the satire their plays provoked inspired many people to break away from established norms. Their plays were mostly performed in the street, often without proper permits, and their brushes with the police and city government are legendary. This play, Civil Rights in a Cracker Barrel, was most famous, and its hard-edged look at race relations was not welcomed by either whites, who preferred to patronize the black community, or the negro community, who were just starting to call themselves blacks, rather than the old negro tag.

The Love Book was written by the poet Lenore Kandel. The book was filled with beautiful poetry that surely was not sexy or dirty—it was literature of the highest degree. But because the title seemed salacious to the city government, it was deemed pornography, and the Psychedelic Shop, a famous store on Haight Street that sold all kinds of hippie-trippy things, was raided and all the copies of the book were seized, and the manager of the store, Allen Cohen, was arrested. So was Lenore Kandel later that day. This was one of many really foolish attempts by the city of San Francisco to try and contain, and in fact destroy, the HaightAshbury freedom and love movement. It did not succeed, and the court case resulted in a victory for Kandel and the Psychedelic Shop and a big loss for the city. This was one of many seminal events that in their own small way helped to promote for a brief time that new spirit and consciousness, which was born on the streets of the Haight-Ashbury. Despite a quote like that from its creator, CrossFit continues to grow and shows no signs of abating. With all the fitness fads and gadgets that come and go in our give-it-to-me-now culture, especially the nonsense that preaches doing virtually nothing and getting into shape, CrossFit has become a trend that has taken hold and won’t let go. What is so alluring to the public at large about a workout system that was designed to train the toughest people in the world — police, tactical units and Special Forces? Greg Glassman, founder of CrossFit, opened the first CrossFit gym in 1995 in Santa Cruz, California, after working as a gymnastics coach and trainer to the stars in Southern California. He created the style after concluding that conventional fitness methodologies were inadequate for all-round conditioning that promoted strength, speed, power, agility, balance, cardio, endurance, accuracy, flexibility, stamina and coordination. He created CrossFit Inc. in 2000, and it has since become a mainstream phenomenon. CrossFit is a conditioning program designed to improve “general physical preparedness.” It is done through several types of workouts, including metabolic conditioning (MetCon), which is what CrossFit is famous for. This is usually a combination of multi-joint strength moves like deadlifts, Olympic lifts, gymnastics-based moves (muscle-ups), calisthenics and cardio intervals

(usually runs or rows mixed up in painful ways). These exercises are usually performed against a running stopwatch or for rounds against a countdown timer. Another aspect is the Max Effort day, which usually consists of low-rep sets with max weights designed to increase strength. Then there are workouts that don’t seem to fit into either format, and are all jumbled up in a randomized three-day-work and one-day-rest format. Jesse Sibbald, a certified CrossFit instructor at Global Fitness in Kelowna, British Columbia, who holds multiple fitness certifications, enjoys a robust CrossFit membership in his club. And that membership grows daily. Sibbald took up CrossFit training because of the allround body workout, the intensity and the goal-oriented mindset of the “sport.” (Yes, it is referred to as a sport.) Reebok even recently announced a CrossFit Games taking place this July. The event was sold out by May.

The science of protecting your skin from the harsh rays of the sun is far from perfect. Until the rise of beach culture in the mid-20th century, the preoccupation among a certain class of people was to keep themselves as pale and protected from the scourge of sun-kissed skin as possible, lest they be thought to have spent time working the fields. Growers, of course, spend hours every day of the outdoor season in the fields tending to their crops. So how do you walk the fine line between toasted god and boiled lobster? It’s a fact that covering up is the only sure-fire way to stave off a burn. As for sun protection products? It’s complicated, but with the array of options available, there’s no excuse to get burned.

There is a camaraderie element to CrossFit training, one that utilizes a group dynamic with a workout of the day (WOD) that everyone in the class participates in. Workouts are typically short — 20 minutes or less — but very intense. When asked if there is a downside to CrossFit, Sibbald says that highly trained instructors are crucial, as some of the movements can be dangerous in a competitive environment where you’re always trying to better yourself by doing quicker and more intense movements as your fitness level progresses. Without proper technique, this can become a recipe for disaster. If you really want to challenge yourself with an array of movements, lifts and styles that cover all the bases and change up day to day to promote all-round strength and fitness, CrossFit may be just the thing you are looking for. But beware—it is not for the faint of heart!

The sun’s UVA and UVB rays both damage the skin, but while UVB rays damage the outer layers, causing painful sunburns, UVA rays are the worst offenders, penetrating the deeper layers of skin and re-emerging decades later as cancers and premature wrinkles. Here’s where sun protection gets tricky: Sunscreens contain a number of tried-and-true organic molecules that absorb the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, releasing it as heat, but regardless of the skin protection factor (SPF), a sunscreen will only protect from UVB rays. UVA rays, meanwhile, require sunblock containing zinc oxide, avobenzone or titanium dioxide. Sunblock is generally thicker and less able to absorb into the skin—think of those whitestreaked tourists you see on the beach. When it comes to deciding on SPF, the formula is subjective, based on the level of melatonin in your skin. If you can stay in direct sunlight for 15 minutes before burning, an SPF 20 will offer 300 minutes (or five hours) of relative protection. By the same calculation (time before burning multiplied by SPF), an SPF 30 sunscreen will get you seven and a half hours, assuming you don’t sweat it off in that time. The general consensus among dermatologists is that higher SPF is always better, but no sunscreen offers 100% protection from the sun’s damage. And above SPF 45, the difference in protection offered is so little as to be negligible. Now that we know all this, maybe it’s time to bring back pale chic.

When it comes to martial arts, there are a lot of misconceptions about what works and what doesn’t. Taekwondo looks good in the Olympics, and kung fu makes for some flashy big-screen fight scenes. But when push comes to shove and you’re facing down a brute in a dark alley, are you really going to pull out a flying spin-kick or praying mantis style? It’s doubtful. With that in mind, we present to you five martial arts that favor practicality over tradition. These are systems designed not for tournament fighting, but for real-life combat.

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU The Gracie family made this style of fighting famous by pitting their system against top fighters from other disciplines. Karate fighters and other black belts from traditional martial arts got successively choked out and armbarred into submission. The Gracies showcased their style in the first UFCs, thereby spreading the gospel of ground fighting far and wide. And the world has never looked back. Anyone interested in real-life self-defense now knows to focus a component of their training on grappling, which might also include two other effective disciplines: wrestling and judo.

JEET KUNE DO Bruce Lee is best known as a movie star, but he was also a philosopher, which informed his progression as a martial artist. Lee was a master of some traditional styles, but he was also interested in developing a highly practical system, one that borrowed the best techniques from a variety of arts and was structured to evolve. That focus on practicality and the will to evolve forms the basis of Jeet Kune Do, which was perhaps the first mixed martial art. There are still many misconceptions about Jeet Kune Do, but suffice it to say that only the techniques that work get handed down, and as new information comes to light, the system evolves to reflect those developments in the world of fighting, adding or discarding techniques as the case may be.

BOXING The words “martial arts” usually make you think of a guy in a white uniform with a black belt, not some shirtless dude working over a speed bag. But Western boxing is a highly efficient system of striking, as many mixed martial artists have realized. The majority of high-level MMA competitors incorporate elements of boxing into their repertoire, including not only punches, but footwork and head movement developed over decades by top flight pugilists in the sweet science.

MUAY THAI This style of kickboxing originates in Thailand and is best known for incorporating elbow and knee strikes, which are especially useful in the type of close-quarters combat that often occurs in a street fight or self-defense situation. Known as the “art of eight limbs,” muay Thai focuses on striking hard and efficiently to cause maximum damage. No fancy nonsense to be found here.

KRAV MAGA Krav Maga is a system developed by the Israeli military expressly for no-holds-barred survival. Incorporating elements of other martial arts (including several of the systems mentioned in this article), Krav Maga also imparts lessons in disarming attackers who wield a knife or gun. Necessity is the mother of invention, and living in as hostile a place as the Middle East has given rise to one of the world’s most effective fighting systems.

PACIFIC RIM Director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) puts his unique spin on a concept straight out of Japanese anime in this giant-robots vs. giant-monsters summer blockbuster. That’s right, giant alien monsters invade Earth’s major cities, and humanity creates a squadron of giant robots, led by Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), to fight them off. The concept is purposefully campy, but with del Toro at the helm, the execution promises to be clever and stylish.

ROCKSTAR ENERGY UPROAR FESTIVAL Two of the biggest acts of the ’90s hit the road with some of today’s rising stars. Jane’s Addiction and Alice in Chains headline this traveling festival, bringing back a couple of genres you don’t hear much about anymore (alternative rock and grunge). The event also features prog-rock titans Coheed & Cambria along with up-and-comers Middle Class Rut, as well as a host of other hot bands. This is the perfect blend of old and new, and a great way to spend a rockin’ day off this summer.

ELYSIUM Neill Blomkamp made a name as a director to watch with his South African sci-fi allegory, District 9. Now Blomkamp is back, this time with megastar Matt Damon in tow. Jodie Foster also lends some star power to the proceedings, which take place in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future where the privileged live in great comfort while the masses suffer. Could it be that the film is meant to serve as a warning? Blomkamp can entertain, but he also provokes with every film.

BREAKING BAD: FINAL SEASON PART 2 Breaking Bad has been one of the most compelling shows in the history of television. Its final season was broken into two parts, with the first half of Season 5 airing late in 2012. We’ve had to wait until now to see what will happen between Hank and Walter, while Jesse and the rest of gang continue to barely hang on as the stakes get higher and higher. The best thing about this show is that we have no idea what’s about to happen. But whatever goes down, you definitely don’t want to miss the conclusion of what’s been one hell of a ride.
