OLD MACDONALD HAS A FARM...EE-I-EE-I-O, AND ON THIS FARM HE RAISES SUPER-WEEDS! Don’t laugh. This is no fun-time nursery rhyme. Here’s the story: Some years ago, biotech company Monsanto developed an herbicidetolerant (HT) gene, which was first spliced into soy seeds. “Hey Mac,” Monsanto crowed, “plant our soybeans and spray them with our Roundup. The weeds will die but your protected soybean crop will flourish.” Mac believed them. And the promise came true. His GMO soybean plants grew while the weeds died. Not only did the weeds die, but he was able to use smaller amounts of pesticides because the GMO seed seemed to attract fewer bugs. That put extra money in his pocket. “This is great!” Mac cheered. “EE-I-EE-I-O!” Fast-forward and let’s visit Old MacDonald’s farm again. What is this? Workers are in the fields pulling weeds? “What’s going on, Mac?” you ask. “Don’t rightly know,” he replies. “Been sprayin’ more and more herbicides but it don’t seem to faze them weeds anymore. In fact, they seem to thrive on the stuff. I’m also havin’ to use more pesticides. Bugs are gettin’ worse every year.” “Did you ask Monsanto about it?” “Yup. They told me to spray more often. They also said they were comin’ up with more potent stuff. But that’s got me worried. I know all

that toxic stuff is gettin’ into the groundwater and then into my well. I also question how healthy the food is I’m raisin’, some of which goes to feedin’ my family. “Has me thinkin’ about Ben, who has a farm down the road,” continues Mac. “Made me laugh when he took up organic farmin’ some years back. Uses some kind of bugs to kill other bugs. Cultivates more often than I do to keep the weeds down. Even grows stuff indoors. “Every chance I got, I was needlin’ Ben about how hard he was workin’ while I was lettin’ science do a lot of my work. But the joke appears to be on me. I’m havin’ to use more and more chemicals, which means my costs are goin’ up. Plus, my land ain’t producin’ like it used to. Takes all the EE-I-EE-I-O out of farmin’. “Didn’t help none when I drove by Ben’s the other day. He has some fine-lookin’ crops. They look a lot like the way mine used to look before gettin’ involved in GMO seeds and toxic chemicals.” I have to sympathize with Old Mac. Seems like the only people getting rich off his land these days are the chemical and GMO companies. It all goes to prove that you can’t cheat Mother Nature. The bill always comes due.

2 GROWING MEDIUMS Pick something proven, stable and consistent that works with a variety of nutes and additives. Pros add their own nutes; the growing medium anchors the plants. Avoid heavily fertilized grow mixes.

3 BASE NUTES (FERTILIZERS) Going with a proven program, where all the components are guaranteed to work together, is always a good choice here. Look for base nutrients that are engineered for application on the types of plants that

you are growing. The ratios of the different elements supplied are very important. 4 ORGANICS SECTION Growing 100% organic is a great way to enhance crop quality, improve your health and put less of a dent

into the earth. Make sure that your nutrient program choice is complete and doesn’t leave your plants lacking for any specific nutrients like calcium and magnesium. 5 FANS & VENTILATION Without a fan, humid-

I wasn’t surprised to see that HID lighting is the lighting that most growers still prefer for their crops (“2013 Buddy Awards,” issue 26). It’s hard to argue with lights that have been working for decades. But I’m writing to tell you about the success I’ve had with induction lighting. It could be the dawning of a new day for agriculture thanks to a fresh kind of greenhouse that is environmentally friendly, economical and allows for growing of some the cleanest food imaginable. David Chelf is the mind behind Airstream Innovations, creators of a controlled environment structure that he claims will create ideal growing conditions for your plants, including an insect-free environment. It sounds like magic, but the concept is surprisingly simple. Airstream greenhouses are inflated by a steady flow of air. Besides maintaining the building’s structure, the design “creates an ideal growing environment,” according to Chelf, “by providing airflow that’s optimal for plant health.” Of course, growers already know that maintaining airflow is important to a grow room. If your plants are too wet, diseases like mold can flourish; if they’re too dry, photosynthesis suffers. Chelf’s design allows for perfect transpiration, which is essential for optimal nutrient uptake from plant roots. But that’s just the beginning. His structures are also wind-powered, which allows for lower energy costs. And outside temperatures are not a factor either, as the Airstream system allows growers to either cool or heat the incoming air as needed. While all of the above is already pretty wonderful, perhaps the most advantageous facet of Chelf’s design is that it offers an insect-free environment. The air moving through the structure creates pressure that keeps a breeze blowing through any exhaust or breaches (rips or holes in the fabric) at such a rate that insects can’t enter the environment. That means growers don’t have to do battle with bugs. “For a quarter of the cost [of other growing structures] you can grow without pesticides, even organic ones,” says Chelf, which is why he describes Airstream Innovations as “an economical way to grow beyond organic.”

ith spring upon us, nothing better illustrates the season than pregnant flower buds giving way to prolific blooming. These beacons of springtime bloom thanks in part to a process called vernalization. Vernalization is the exposure of plants to a defined period of cold temperatures in order to enable flower production. This means that some plants, mostly those in temperate areas, require an interval of cold within their life cycle to initiate flowering. The appropriate duration and temperature of this cold period varies between genera. Every plant that depends on exposure to cold as part of its seasonal workings does so due to a set of genes called VRNs. In the absence of VRN genes, vernalization isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t needed to initiate a reproductive cycle. Vernalization can take place in perennials, biennials and annuals alike. Familiar perennials that use vernalization to flower include species of phlox, euphorbia, anemone, columbine, coreopsis and lavender. Light also plays a decisive role in blooming. Plants that do not use cold to discern flowering time generally rely on photoperiods instead. The measure of daylight hours compared to hours of darkness induces flowers either by long or short days. Some plants that undergo vernalization will also incorporate photoperiods to calculate seasons.

Vernalization can take place within one season or stretch over two. Perennials will flower, fruit, seed and become dormant for the winter, returning the following year to repeat the process. Biennials, however, will only produce leaves and roots in the first year, then flower, fruit and seed after a winter season. Many of these biennial plants are agricultural staples such as cabbage, broccoli, kale, beets, carrots and winter wheat. Botany has found its way around this problem, modernizing agriculture and horticulture to how we know it today. Agricultural vernalization has shortened biennial crops to one season by discovering that a partially germinated seed that is chilled for a time will result in productive crops within the same year. In horticulture, understanding temperatures and chill periods particular to plant species means the ability to manipulate seed and flower output throughout a growing season and the cultivation of attractive, flowering plants to send to market.

Vernalization is a critical seasonal cue. Without it, many plants would flower erroneously, meaning instant flower death due to improper environmental conditions and a failed reproductive cycle. Plants have also come to bloom at determined times in order to coincide with pollinators. Blooming on time is crucial to maintaining synchronization with bees, moths, beetles, wasps and other insects. Both seasonality and pollination are most likely responsible for the evolutionary development of vernalization in plants. Curiously enough, devernalization is also possible. To devernalize a seed, first keep it chilled and then expose it to high temperatures before sowing. This deflects energy to root and leaf development, and is especially useful for vegetable production, namely onions. Nature has finely tuned itself over the course of millions of years, thereby delivering the joy of seasons and thus flowering, all part and parcel of vernalization.

t’s that time of year again, when we get to grow outside in the warm, sunny weather. If you’re like me, you’d rather spend your summer at your growing site or at the pool than waste quality daylight hours in the hydroponics shop. That’s why I’m going to go over the equipment and accessories that will make your entire outdoor grow season a fun and profitable one. These products will ensure a great grow from start to finish — and also make the process a little easier. First, decide what size container you’re going to need. When using pots outdoors, I suggest getting the biggest ones available. Even a 55-gallon trash can is a good choice. If you decide to go the old school way by just planting directly in the ground, make sure that your plants are at least five feet apart so they will get enough light as they get bigger through the growing cycle. Dig holes about twofeet-by-two-feet and two feet deep, layer 2-3 inches of hydroton at the bottom for better drainage, and then fill the hole with a soil of your choice. Next, let’s get your nutrients picked out. I’ve used Heavy Harvest in the past, but this year I’m going to switch to Jungle Juice 2-Part from Advanced Nutrients. The switch to liquid fertilizer might take a little more effort this season, but it offers control that you just can’t get with a time-release pellet fertilizer. I love relaxing during summertime, but I’ll happily trade a few hours rest for healthier plants and bigger yields.

Now is a good time to prepare your stakes as well. Your plants may be small right now, but as they grow they’re going to need extra support for all those heavy flowers. Six-foot bamboo stakes are what I use. Just imagine your crop growing straight upward like a tree! And while you are preparing, stock up on natural pest control that you will certainly need as your crop starts to look extra-delicious come high summer. I even prepare a tarp to protect from the heavy rains that can come late during the blooming season. With all that done, I’m ready to enjoy summer like a kid at camp. And more importantly, I know I’ll be able to enjoy my outdoor crop come autumn harvest time.

Many outdoor organic growers have a heightened knowledge of individual organic substances, which allows them to tailor their soils to the specific needs of their high-value crops. In order to build that perfect balance of essential elements, plant hormones, vitamins and beneficial microorganisms, a grower must understand each individual ingredient, its nutritional value and how it affects the composition of the soil. Some of these ingredients provide similar nutritional value but may release at a different speed. A soil with a good balance of organic ingredients will provide sustained nutrition for high-value crops throughout the entire growing season.

BENEFICIAL MICROORGANISMS It has become second nature for modern organic growers to supplement beneficial microorganisms in their soils. The benefits are multifaceted, but to put it simply, sufficient amounts of microorganisms ensure nutrient uptake happens at the fastest rate possible. The three most common beneficial microorganisms used by horticulturalists are trichoderma, mycorrhiza and bacteria.

WORM CASTINGS

FEATHER MEAL

This wouldn’t be much of an organic ingredients article if there were no mention of worm castings. Worm castings, or vermicompost, contain a significant amount of nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. Hailed by many organic growers as the best soil additive available, worm castings are known to enrich soil and improve disease resistance in crops.

Feather meal is a slow-releasing nitrogen source. It’s a great additive for plant varieties that require high amounts of nitrogen over a three-to-four-month period.

ORGANIC NITROGEN (N) INGREDIENTS Organic ingredients rich in nitrogen are commonly associated with vigorous, green growth. Plants generally consume the greatest concentration of nitrogen during the vegetative stage. BLOOD MEAL

Blood meal is a very rich, fast-releasing nitrogen source. It is great for plant varieties that require high amounts of nitrogen, especially in the initial stages of vegetative growth. FISH MEAL

Fish meal is also a fast-releasing nitrogen source. Fish meal is a great nitrogen additive that enhances microbial life in the soil. Some of the fish meal available also contains a significant amount of phosphorus, which helps trigger root development.

SOYBEAN MEAL

Soybean meal is another slow-releasing nitrogen source, but not quite as slow as feather meal. This additive is becoming the slow-release nitrogen source of choice for growers of high-value crops. Soybean meal also contains a little phosphorus boost to help promote the initial stages of flowering. BAT GUANO (HIGH-NITROGEN)

Bat guano comes in a variety of compositions, including high-nitrogen bat guano, which also contains micronutrients and beneficial microbes. Many growers choose this type of bat guano as their primary nitrogen source because of its multiple benefits.

ORGANIC PHOSPHORUS (P) INGREDIENTS Ingredients rich in phosphorus are known to promote root growth, trigger particular flowering hormones within the plant and directly influence flower size. BAT GUANO (HIGH-PHOSPHORUS)

High-phosphorus bat guano is known to not only increase the amount of flower

sets but also their size, aroma and flavor. Most varieties of high phosphorus bat guano also contain calcium, which makes this additive doubly advantageous.

BONE MEAL

Bone meal is primarily a phosphorus source but also contains a significant amount of calcium. This additive is revered for its ability to promote strong root development and large flowers.

Greensand is a very slow-releasing potassium source. Unless it’s being used in an outdoor environment where the growing season is especially long, greensand is used to improve a soil’s condition rather than boost potassium content.

FISH BONE MEAL

Fish bone meal is also a great source of both phosphorus and calcium. Like bone meal, fish bone meal is known to promote large blooms and root development.

LANGBEINITE

Langbeinite is a water-soluble naturally occurring mineral rich in potassium, sulfur and magnesium.

SEABIRD GUANO

Seabird guano is an excellent source of phosphorus and micronutrients known to increase the amount of flower sets and their size. ROCK PHOSPHATE

Rock phosphate is a slow-releasing phosphorus source. This additive is best for plants that need a slow and constant release of phosphorus. Some longer-blooming varieties respond well to rock phosphate.

ORGANIC POTASSIUM (K) INGREDIENTS Sufficient potassium is needed throughout the plant’s entire life and is crucial to healthy flower development. KELP MEAL

Kelp meal is a good source of potassium and also provides a variety of micronutrients and plant hormones.

ORGANIC CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM AND TRACE ELEMENTS Secondary minerals and trace elements are just as important to optimizing plant performance as NPK. Growers use additives with secondary minerals and trace elements in their soil mixes to complete the necessary diversity found in healthy soil in nature. OYSTER SHELL

Oyster shell is an excellent source of calcium that will accelerate root development and, in turn, improve nutrient uptake. Oyster shell also works as a natural pH buffer, helping to keep the soil from becoming too acidic.

DOLOMITE LIME (SWEET LIME)

Dolomite lime is a great pH buffer for any soil composition and, as with oyster shell, acts as a pH buffer ensuring that the soil’s pH doesn’t turn too acidic. Dolomite lime also contains calcium and magnesium. GLACIER ROCK DUST

s much as we’d like to just have the sun on a switch, we can’t make that happen. So, for the moment, we’re left with HID lights. Although there are other technologies coming of age, HID (High Intensity Discharge) lighting is what most growers use because it’s reliable, productive, and compared to alternatives, relatively cheap. Behind every HID light is a ballast, and most grow forums are full of questions and misinformation about what they are and how they work. What are the different design choices in building one? How can you tell a good one from a bad one? Is there any real difference between brands? What should they cost?

Second, and this isn’t all good news, current and voltage move close to 90 degrees out of phase with each other across an inductor. The good news is that the inductor doesn’t heat up like a resistor would. The bad news is that the power loss is atrocious. Power is voltage multiplied by current, and if they are out of phase, you don’t get the use of all that power you’re paying for at the meter. Electrical engineers refer to this as “apparent power,” which is to say that if you have 4.16 amps reading on your amp meter and 240 volts on your voltmeter, you’d expect 1,000 watts at the bulb (240 * 4.16 = 1,000 watts). Problem is, with current and voltage out of phase you may be getting as little as 700 watts to the bulb — not what we had in mind. Power Factor (PF) is a measure of how far out of phase voltage and current are in a circuit, with a PF of 1.00 being perfectly matched. Core-and-coil

LET’S TAKE A LOOK:

WHAT IS A BALLAST? An HID light, be it HPS or metal-halide or something similar, requires a high voltage to ionize the stuff in the bulb. By high voltage, we’re talking 4000 volts, enough to leave a permanent burn should you grab it, so be warned. Once the bulb contents are ionized, an arc strikes and you have a nice, bright, and very unstable arc light. The unstable part is where the ballast comes in, and is why they’re called ballasts. A ballast is used in a circuit (or on a sailboat) to make things stable. As the bulb warms up, we need to limit the current flowing or the breaker will trip (we hope) before the bulb turns into a small incendiary device. Once at operating temperature, the ballast needs to hold a constant power level by varying the duty cycle, voltage or some combination thereof to maintain constant brightness. Ever balance a broom on your finger, inverted-pendulum style? That’s the ballast’s job – to maintain a stable operating point in an unstable arc light. There are a few ways to go about making this happen. Let’s start by looking at the easiest of these.

CORE & COIL If you take a big coil of wire and wind it around an iron core, you make an inductor, which resists the rate of change of current flowing through it. If you wire one in series with your HID bulb, two things happen: First, an inductor charges up when current flows through it, and dumps all that energy when the current stops. It’s the same technique we use to fire spark plugs in a car, except that the AC line stops and starts 60 times per second, so we get a bunch of inductive spikes to help start the arc.

ballasts have a capacitor wired in to help rein in the power factor although the end result is not very efficient due to the loss in all the wire in the coil and the PF that remains. You end up somewhere in the 80% range with a good, wellcompensated ballast. If those 1,000-watt bulbs don’t looks as bright as you’d expected on the old core and coil, it’s because they’re probably putting out quite a bit less energy than you’d like.

ELECTRONIC BALLASTS As prices on power semiconductors came down in the 1990s, engineers started pushing forward with switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) since a switching supply running at high frequency requires smaller transformers and inductors (the expensive parts) than an SMPS running at a lower frequency. As designs got better and better, electronic ballasts became a practical answer to running HID lights. A good electronic ballast has a power factor over 0.98, which is almost perfect, and runs at better than 90% efficiency. All of this is to say that you’ll push around 1,100 watts into an electronic ballast to get 1000 watts out.

Do you actually get 1,000 watts out of a 1,000-watt ballast?

This is closer to the 60 Hz the bulbs were designed to handle, but a little higher, so you don’t perceive flicker like in fluorescent lights. The downside of LFSQ is that it takes four stages to do properly and is very difficult to design at high power levels. But considering the advantages — less electrical noise, ability to use any bulb you want, cooler running and greater efficiency (since engineers can run the third stage much, much higher in frequency and not worry about the bulb exploding as the bulb is driven by stage four) — look for more of this technology in the near future.

The short answer is: not always. It takes some sophisticated gear to really check out a ballast and, as we discussed above, you may not be measuring what you think you are. A proper ballast test rig integrates the waveform so that you know what’s really going on. Here’s a commonly used ballast tester, which produces curves like the ones in the next section:

We’ve tested a bunch of them and one well-known 1,000-watt ballast puts out as little as 920 watts. Not earthshaking, but 1,050 watts in and 920 watts out means 87.6% (920/1050) efficiency. That only goes to show that you can’t always believe what’s on the box. Here’s a part of a test run of a well-known ballast running at 120 volts:

C’MON, FEEL THE NOISE

Note that the output power of this 1,000-watt ballast is only 969 watts. We tested a few of these units, and this is typical. The output voltage should be closer to 230 volts, according to the bulb maker, which means that this ballast will show more blue spectrum than expected with a given bulb.

LOW FREQUENCY VS. HIGH FREQUENCY Another frequent debate about ballasts is whether high or low frequency matters. Highfrequency is the most common of the two, using a switched-mode power supply running at around 35 kHz (35,000 cycle per second). This is a low-tech approach to building a ballast. It takes three stages to do properly, and the output is a high-frequency AC sine wave that lights the bulb. The upside of this design is that it is inexpensive to build. The downside is that 35 kHz is high enough in frequency to generate a lot of electrical noise and make the ballast its own unwanted radio station. A bigger concern is that HID bulbs are expecting 60 Hz, not 35,000 Hz, which means they can literally

shake themselves to pieces through a phenomenon known as acoustic resonance. Musicians are familiar with resonance — pluck a guitar string and the bass across the room vibrates too. HID bulbs have much more complex resonances since, unlike a guitar string, they are made of different materials and pieces welded or brazed together. Ever hear of digital bulbs? They were made to survive digital ballasts, which is to say that they are sturdier than traditional bulbs, so they don’t shake to bits. There’s nothing magic about them; they’re simply designed to withstand high frequencies from by digital ballasts. General Electric and other companies are pushing for a low frequency square wave (LFSQ) ballast to provide a 150 Hz output.

The Federal Communications Commission has a strict set of standards that all electronic ballasts must meet. These standards limit the amount of radio-frequency noise a ballast can radiate or push back through the power lines to potentially disrupt communications, computers and the like. Having tested a fair stack of ballasts in the shop, we’ve discovered that most of them don’t meet FCC guidelines, and some don’t even come close. One factory in China that manufactures private-label ballasts for several well-known U.S. brands specifically deleted noise-reducing parts from the bill of material to save money since “they never check anyway.” Well, some of us do, and we’ll show you how. In the next installment, we’ll get into how to do a quick series of tests to determine if that new ballast you’re looking at is one they “never check.” You’ll be surprised what you find. HARVEST ON DEMAND? There’s an increasingly popular trend of tinkering with your plants’ photoperiod in order to trigger the flowering process out of season. The benefits are obvious: You get precocious amounts of flowers whenever you please and you get them more times per year than is possible using a natural light cycle. However, this advanced method of growing offers some challenges based on your setup as well as the attention you can pay to your crop on a daily basis. Do you grow indoors or outdoors? How consistently can you stick to a schedule for your photoperiod? What kind of plants are you growing? But before we get into those details, here’s a little bit of history about the harvest-on-demand technique known as...

FORCED DARKNESS For at least the past 10,000 years, human beings have been farming. During almost that entire time, the fundamentals were the same: dirt, water and light. But as any grower knows, there’s a lot more you can pay attention to in order to maximize your yields. Strangely, it wasn’t until about World War I that anyone noticed (or at least recorded) that plants respond to darkness just as much as they respond to light. In fact, given the right kind of plant, the response to darkness can be pretty dramatic. The same way that muscles respond to positive (work) stimulus such as lifting weights, and negative (rest) stimulus that happens during sleeping (where growth actually happens), so too do plants balance a cycle of stimulus and rest to produce big, juicy fruits. In his book Reaching for the Sun: How Plants Work, author John King credits this discovery to Julien Tournois, a doctoral student in Paris who first recorded the discovery of the forced darkness phenomena. Tournois noticed that in winter his plants were blossoming like crazy. He figured that since the day is shorter in winter, its blossoms might have to do with longer periods of darkness. Tournois took a scientific approach to testing his theory by screening out light for consistent periods of darkness. It worked like a charm. He even found that the most

effective photoperiod was 18 hours of darkness and only six hours of light, at least for the plants he was testing at the time. After testing his theories on both the Japanese hop and hemp plants, Tournois was convinced that it was “the length of the night, not so much the shortness of the day, that was the deciding factor in when his plants flowered.” Sadly, Tournois died in service to his country during World War I, before he could figure out all the details. But his research was continued, most significantly by the United States Department of Agriculture. Working for the USDA, two botanists, W.W. Garner and H.A. Allard, published their findings in a paper titled “Experiment Station Record.” Working mainly with tobacco and soybeans, but also with a variety of other plants, Garner and Allard confirmed Tournois’ theory that the photoperiod — the specific ratio of hours of light to hours of darkness — is indeed what determined the flowering in most plants. Therefore growers could control the flowering of their crop by artificially inducing periods of darkness. This breakthrough led to the classification of plants according to photoperiod responses. Garner and Allard came up with three basic categories: • Long-day plants flower naturally when the photoperiod favors more hours of light than darkness. • Day-neutral plants can flower year-round, based on criteria other than photoperiod. • Short-day plants flower when the photoperiod favors more hours of dark than light. As testing continued, researchers noticed something curious. It wasn’t the intensity of the light that made a difference in the plants’ flowering response. It was the consistency of the darkness. This made evolutionary sense given the extremely reliable cycles of darkness throughout the year, more so than the less consistent intensity of light that can naturally vary from season to season. The Earth doesn’t randomly face the sun in the middle of the night. It spins at a steady rate of one rotation every 24 hours, steady as she goes. It has for eons. Equally consistent is the length of night found during each season. Plants learned to identify the seasons changing. As autumn approached and nights got longer with each passing sunset, it was guaranteed that their life cycle was coming to an end. That means it’s time to cash in and yield fruit. On the other hand, temporary periods of darkness are indicators of something more fleeting – cloudy weather, or a physical obstruction, rather than the change of the seasons. Plants aren’t so fickle as to give up their fruit for anything but their definite end. They’ve got to be sure. Once they are, the priority of the plant’s apical meristems (or growing tips) switches from producing leaves and stems, known to growers as the vegetative phase, to producing fruit, which is the flowering phase. Armed with this knowledge, clever growers learned that they could artificially

activate this natural process as long as they consistently created uninterrupted periods of darkness for their crops.

WHY USE FORCED DARKNESS? The best reason to use forced darkness is for commercial purposes. If you sell a cash crop, like poinsettias for example, then it is a huge market advantage to be able to cause blooming on demand year-round. In fact, commercially, growers of poinsettias are famous for using forced darkness to stay ahead in the market. Forced darkness also allows growers of high-value plants to be able to harvest more times per year than the competition. This way, you have the advantage of timing as well as volume. Imagine being able to supply a full shipment of product while your competitors are still dragging their feet through the veg phase.

THE IDEAL FORCED DARKNESS SETUP Forced darkness can be used by almost all ingenious growers. However, because of the strict adherence required to mimic nature’s natural light cycle, outdoor greenhouse gardens are the best setup. This might be surprising to indoor growers who have complete control over their lighting and plenty of mechanisms that easily deliver exact timing. However, the energy cost of maxing out your veg phase with 16 hours of daylight and then sticking

to a down-to-the-minute schedule of darkness to trigger flowering can be the opposite of cost-effective if you’re not growing enough product. Ok, so without further delay, here’s what you do: Start by moving a heavily vegged plant into the greenhouse, and use whatever means possible to make sure that the greenhouse is dark for 12 uninterrupted hours or more per every 24 hours. Seriously, even a few minutes of light will undo all your effort. Tarps are the industry standard, but configuring how your tarps are drawn over the greenhouse is something to consider. There are companies out there like Harvest Excel that make automated canopy greenhouses. This takes the element of human error out of the equation because you set the canopy of your greenhouse on a timer and voilà, every 12 hours on the button, you have sufficient darkness in your greenhouse to trigger big ol’ flowers. There’s also the option of manual labor. But that means you need a dedicated work staff that will pull those tarps exactly right, almost to the minute, every day, twice a day. With a fair amount of diligence, any grower can soon take control of their plants’ flowering period. While we love the amazing crops that nature has given us, the most successful growers take control of their plants and use their natural proclivities to maximize their productivity.

Take one of the 4’x5’ pieces of black plastic and spread it over one end. Tape the smaller piece to the bigger piece using the all-weather tape.

As you go along, remember to remove all of the tape that you used to secure the first piece of plastic to the frame. You want the plastic cover to be easily removable.

Repeat on the opposite side. Make it snug on the frame, but not so snug that you can’t easily lift the cover off during light hours and slide it back on at lights-out time.

STEP FOUR: KEEP IT FRESH With anything that blocks airflow, humidity can rise and invite disease, so be careful that your plants get enough fresh air. Make sure that you take the cover off as often as you can, for example after the sun goes down, to allow for fresh air to reach your little friends. Just remember to put it back on before dawn if your photoperiod requires more darkness.

Getting your gear into your location is a challenge. By definition, payloads are very hard to move around without being seen. And you don’t want undesirables to see you going in or out of your outback grow. Nothing ages you faster than wondering if some stranger may have observed you bringing your payload into your amazing location and might be lying in wait to take your supplies or spoils at the end of the season. It all begins with how you choose your locations — whether or not it is out of the visible corridor of foot or road traffic. It is always best to choose spots that you can access by pulling off the beaten path

on a somewhat overgrown road that clearly does not get traveled anymore. If you are indeed exposed and vulnerable to passersby, the wee hours of the morning are the best time to load in, before people wake. Even then the “drop method” is always best. A drop is when you pull to the closest point between the road and your patch, jump out, stash your stuff beyond the tree line, then go hide your vehicle so that you can return and melt into the bush to do your grunt work out of view. While parked and unloading at that vulnerable time, create subterfuge by getting your tire jack and spare out to explain why you are arbitrarily parked on the side of the road at odd hours in the middle of nowhere. Do not give the casual passerby the indulgence of wondering what you are doing; answer that question visually before he can entertain it. If someone does come, abort your mission and leave the area for the day. Never risk that same vehicle seeing you in that same place on their return. If you have no choice but to park your vehicle in plain view while working, be sure to go a half-kilometer or so out of the area, then access your spot through the bush. Never park for hours on end with straight access to your garden. If you have an open box in your truck, always cover your payload. Having things visible like a mountain bike or fishing gear is a good distraction – anything to throw off prying eyes and to maintain your privacy and protect your crop. Growers love to tell horror stories of crops gone wrong. These are some of the worst we’ve ever heard. Don’t learn from your mistakes. Learn from these instead.

1) INDOOR STRAIN FAILS TO FLOWER BEFORE WINTER An old mentor of mine made this mistake with 1,000 plants when he was a beginner. He was counting his money all the way until the fall when he began sweating bullets because winter was on the doorstep and there were no flowers on his massive plants. Be sure you plant outdoor genetics that flower according to where you are in the hemisphere.

2) PLANTING IN SOMEONE’S BACKYARD I traveled over four hours into the woods to get to a spot I thought was foolproof, only to lose it all to residents of a nearby reserve that was down a road I had never traveled before. Get out current satellite maps of the area or Google relevant topics such as population base or hiking activities. Distance does not necessarily mean remoteness.

3) WHERE’D THE WATER GO?

DO NOT choose a spot near electric lines. They are watched and maintained by the government and sometimes sprayed to kill vegetation around the lines and towers.

DO NOT plant near water. Undesirables look for water first when they are looking for you because they know your crop needs it. Unless you are super-remote, bring your water in or pump it from very large distances over tough terrain. Always capsize your setup after each watering.

You have to determine if your water source is permanent groundwater or runoff that will dry out when the snow melts off the mountains. In a lot of cases this means waiting a year to check for standing or flowing water in the fall.

you do not cut a swath directly to your plants. It is tempting to take the shortest route when going through thick bush with a heavy payload, but it can cost you. If you must beat a trail, have a disconnect between it and the main access point.

4) WORRY ABOUT WEATHER

Never leave your fully matured plants with heavy flowers out in bad weather and assume that they will be fine for “just one more day.” I have seen entire patches destroyed by pathogens in a matter of days. Your plants are governed by their biology and react to conditions regardless of your schedule. Build your life around your garden. It may cause a divorce, but it will save your pocketbook and separate you from the amateurs.

You need a southerly exposure with at least eight hours of direct sunlight. Bring a compass so you can orient yourself. If you love the location, spend a day there and clock the hours of direct sunlight. It may seem like a lot of trouble, but if the fall comes and your plants have not flowered completely because of too little sunlight, you will wish you had.

DOES YOUR CROP REALLY HAVE FEELINGS? BY DAVI D HAM B LI N G

nimated vegetables like Triffids are confined to science fiction, and we have little trouble distinguishing animals from plants. However, biologists have long known that plants do sense and react in ways that resemble animals. But how much do the researchers really know, and can they answer the perennial question, “Do plants feel pain?” This was a topic that interested Charles Darwin. His 1880 book The Power of Movement in Plants attempted to show how plant behavior adapted to any environment. Like others, he noted how plants were sensitive to light, gravity and touch. He was particularly interested in the radicle, the growing tip of a seedling, and suggested that plants had a nervous system: “It is hardly an exaggeration to say that the tip of the radicle thus endowed, and having the power of directing the movements of the adjoining parts, acts like the brain of one of the lower animals; the brain being seated within the anterior end of the body, receiving impressions from the sense-organs, and directing the several movements.” The celebrated Indian botanist and physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose, who developed a device called a crescograph to record the movement of the growing tip of a plant at high magnification, carried out further work in this area. In 1907 he published a paper on the electrophysiology of plants and showed that they produced an electrical potential in response to contact or damage. The obvious conclusion was that they possessed the same sort of nervous system as animals.

Mimosa pudica

The flagship for plant feelings is the “sensitive plant,” Mimosa pudica, a tropical plant that reacts to being touched by folding up its leaves. This seems to be a defense against heavy rainstorms, and it shows that plants are capable of animal-like reactions to their surroundings. The Venus flytrap, which snaps shut when trigger hairs are touched, is a more specialized example, and both plants have been studied intensively. However, in the 1960s, scientific work on plant feelings was overshadowed in the media by less rigorous work with more immediate appeal. If Bose could attach instruments to plants, so could others. Cleve Backster, an ex-CIA operative and chairman of the Venus flytrap

Research and Instrument Committee of the Academy for Scientific Interrogation, was inspired by Bose’s work to hook up a polygraph to plant leaves. Backster claimed that not only did plants respond to damage, but they also responded to the threat of damage, and even other plants or animals being damaged nearby. Not one to be left out, L. Ron Hubbard created headlines about “screaming tomatoes” in 1968. He attached an e-meter, the Scientologists’ favorite electronic device for measuring electrical resistance, to plant leaves. The media were intrigued. While much of the coverage was frivolous, with interviewers like Alan Whicker asking Hubbard if rose pruning should be allowed, he garnered plenty of publicity for his research and was featured in Life magazine. The Secret Life of Plants, by Peter Tomkins and Christopher Bird, which covers various plant phenomena, was a bestseller in 1973; Stevie Wonder released his soundtrack to the subsequent documentary as an album. Lyall Watson’s Supernature, also a bestseller in 1973, helped popularize the same findings. The cumulative effect was to lodge screaming plants firmly in the public consciousness. The “amazing but true” phenomena are regularly wheeled out by nature lovers as a sign of the unity of all living things, and even more regularly used to taunt vegetarians that cabbages have feelings too.

However, the world of science was moving away from the idea of plant pain well before Backster. Darwin’s suggestion that the radicle acted like a brain was rejected by plant physiologists at the time, and The Power of Movement in Plants did not attract a following. Scientists from Cornell University replicated Backster’s experimental setup in 1975, but failed to find any evidence for the “primary perception” he had claimed. In the meantime, we have learned much more about how plant senses work. Plants do not have anything that resembles a central nervous system, which rules out feeling in the traditional sense. But they do have bundlesheath cells running along their veins, and these carry the electrical potential measured by Bose. The potential drives the Mimosa pudica’s reaction and many others. Many plants have phototropins, chemicals sensitive to blue light, which can trigger a reaction to lengthen one side of a stem so that flowers turn to face the sun. A different mechanism reacts to red light and allows plants to sense day and night. Some of the mechanisms involved turn out to be highly sophisticated, and get translated into headlines like the BBC’s “Plants Can Think And Remember” or the Daily Mail’s “Plants Can Talk, Say Scientists.” That’s the sound of analogies being overstretched. My computer is not really thinking while the hourglass symbol is displayed, doesn’t play chess intelligently and doesn’t remember the files stored on it. There are still plenty of mysteries around how plants respond and communicate. They signal to each other by emitting ethylene gas and hormones, and there are indications that roots emit and respond to sounds. They can “smell” airborne chemicals and “taste” with their roots, sensing and reacting to other plants nearby. Plants really do have many of the capabilities you would associate with animals, but they work by very different means. They are life, you might say, but not life as we know it.

Andrew Zimmern is not the only celebrity chef who advocates eating locally sourced foods. British health food advocate Jamie Oliver has taken a personal stake in the health and extreme obesity levels of children in the United States, the most overweight country in the world. Oliver travels the country to show simple, good-tasting recipes that can be made at home without much time, effort or money. One of Oliver’s primary concerns is school lunches. Among lower income children, schoolprovided lunch is often the main source of nutrition, with their homes failing to offer reliable access to food. Oliver is so dedicated to improving the healthfulness of school lunches that in one school (Somers Middle School), he instituted a program to grow a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs. The fresh produce augments those sometimes-frightening school lunches. Another man who takes sustainability seriously is Rick Bayless, the world-renowned chef and self-trained rooftop horticulturist whose Frontera Grill in Chicago grows a variety of fruits and vegetables on its roof. The restaurant staff jokingly call it his “salsa bar,” but Bayless’ garden is much more than that.

But more than just sharing personality traits, there’s an inherent connection between the grower lifestyle and the cult of celebrity chefs that has taken over pop culture. Eating like a local is certainly a key to the formula of travel-based celebrity chefs, but utilizing local produce and responsible agricultural practices is a winning formula for everyone, from celebrity chef to local farmer to everyday consumer. Many of the top celebrity chefs are also concerned about the growth of the GMO industry and its impact on food in the U.S. During the last election, more than 100 California-based celebrity chefs, including notable names like Mario Batali, Cat Cora and Jacques Pépin, signed a petition endorsing Proposition 37, the sadly failed California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act. The bill would have required companies to label products that contain genetically altered ingredients and made the state the first in the country with GMO labeling requirements, now commonplace elsewhere in the developed world.

Celebrity chefs have a unique platform to help change the world in meaningful ways. Anthony Bourdain has a personal mission to spread awareness about how the U.S. consumes meat. While he is far from vegan or vegetarian, and actually calls such practices in most situations a “first-world luxury,” Bourdain believes that not only do Americans consume too much meat, we waste it as well. Bourdain wants to increase the popularity of so-called peasant foods, dishes that contain cuts of meat with which most Americans are probably not familiar but would likely enjoy. These are, as the name suggests, meals that have been eaten traditionally by the poorer classes as the rich took the premium cuts, but are often incredibly flavorful, inventive and, most of all, more ecologically responsible. If Americans were to consume meat in a responsible manner, meaning much less frequently, in much smaller quantities and utilizing the entire animal every time, more people could be fed with fewer animals, resulting in a significantly reduced impact on the environment. It is hard to debate the ecological argument against our current meat and dairy industries, not to mention that our insanely high obesity levels would drop right along with our carbon footprint. Small changes, like eating less and more varied types of meat as well as buying local goods, and growing food in our yards or in community gardens, may end up healing a lot of the planet’s ills. Celebrity chefs like Anthony Bourdain are right there to push these causes off the back burners. It may sound crazy, but reality television could save the world.

Despite having the support of so many chefs and others in the food industry, the massively funded GMO machine won this fight, throwing cash around to the tune of about $50 million to manufacture a fearbased smear campaign against the bill. Even celebrities can’t outspend Monsanto. Though the act would not have required chefs or their restaurants to label dishes that contain GMO ingredients, many chefs were interested in the bill passing because they would be able to make more informed choices about the food that they cook. The best chefs are looking to make their meals out of the freshest, tastiest and safest products available. Buying from local business owners, whether farmers or fishermen, is the best choice for these reasons and more. Not only are these sustainability-minded chefs helping to finance local companies and jobs, they are providing the best products to their customers and shrinking their carbon footprint in the process by not supporting companies who ship items halfway around the world. The practice of long-distance shipping is essentially outdated because new technologies are continually developing to allow us to grow plants in places we once thought impossible, from freezing climates to sweltering deserts, into the far reaches of outer space and, of course, in our own homes.

Still, big business rarely learns its lesson the first time. In the wake of public outcry over the dangers of first-generation pesticides, biotech companies like Monsanto and Calgene touted a new solution in their genetically engineered seed strains. The year was 1996, and the sales pitch promised a utopian solution to agriculture’s oldest challenge: genetically modified organisms (GMO) would allow farmers to grow bigger yields with fewer pesticides. It’s been almost 20 years since that promise was made; how has it turned out? The science behind these original claims was admittedly plausible. Through transgenic alterations, genetic engineers were able to stitch a bacterial toxin (Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt) into the DNA of corn and cotton plants. The Bt toxin is an insecticide, harmful to a handful of pests that would otherwise need to be sprayed with a chemical pesticide. Similarly, Monsanto developed an herbicide-tolerant (HT) gene that protects crops from glyphosate, the active ingredient in their Roundup herbicide. The HT gene was first spliced into soy seeds to make them “Roundup Ready” and has since been combined with Bt genes in corn and cotton strains. Monsanto reasoned that a crop producing its own insect-repellent toxin would require less insecticide. And if that

crop could stand up to an herbicide that wiped out every other plant in the field, it seemed logical that Roundup would be the only herbicide needed and that less of it would have to be applied. For the first few years, Monsanto’s promise came true. According to a definitive study by Washington State University professor Charles Benbrook, genetically engineered crops reduced overall pesticide use (herbicides plus insecticides) by about 2% each year in the first three years of commercial introduction. The upfront success of GMO convinced farmers to buy in. Genetically engineered crops were introduced on just over 7 million acres of U.S. farmland. By 2008, GMO crops occupied a whopping 132 million acres. Today, genetically engineered soy and cotton have virtually monopolized the market, representing more than 90% of the total acres planted for each crop, the majority of which are Monsanto’s Roundup Ready lineup. The GMO super-crops created a lot of cash for Big Ag giants like Monsanto, but like any comic book fan will tell you, where there is a superhero, a supervillain will soon appear. With its reliance on a single pestcontrol agent year after year, HT crops have now created their own ultimate enemy. Enter the superweed.

For many years now, farmers have started to notice these weeds growing among their GMO crops. In the Midwest, Roundupresistant horseweed has sprung up in 16 states, occupying several million acres of farmland. In the Southeast, the Godzilla-like Palmer amaranth weed has adapted so heartily to glyphosate that farmers are now hiring workers to manually remove the plants from their soy and cotton fields. According to one Virginia farmers organization, just four Palmer amaranth plants in every 100 square feet of planted row can reduce soybean yield by up to 17%. To fight these superweeds, Monsanto has encouraged farmers to spray more heavily and more often. Where a single dose of Roundup was once effective at clearing a field before planting, farmers are now being forced to spray as many as three times per crop cycle. Hardly the reduction in herbicides we were once promised. Compared to other weed-control chemicals, Roundup is a high-dose herbicide, requiring 0.75 pounds per acre to get the job done. This has resulted in a veritable rain of glyphosate. Between 1996 and 2011, herbicide use in the United States has increased by 527 million pounds. STUNTWOMAN GAËLLE COHEN WENT FROM BEING A LAWYER TO A REAL-LIFE ACTION HEROINE BY CASS I E CAR PE NTE R

There’s an old saying that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels. A similar notion describes the career of professional stuntwoman Gaëlle Cohen. This French beauty is often scantily clad and wearing heels while performing death-defying feats for films like Zero Dark Thirty, Rush Hour 3, Sahara and Babylon A.D. Then there was the time she had to dive into a castle’s moat for the TV show Largo Winch during a blustery Parisian winter. “The moat was there since the 17th century and it was freezing,” says Cohen. “The actor wore a smoking jacket over a tuxedo. And the actress was wearing a black spaghetti-strap minidress. So the stunt guy had a full dive suit on underneath and I had nothing but panties. We jumped in the water and did it in one take.” Stunt people regularly get hit by cars, fall off cliffs and get set on fire. Ironically, if they’re doing their jobs, the audience doesn’t notice

their presence. It’s not the most glamorous profession, and it’s a far cry from where Gaëlle started — practicing law. “I focused on medical ethics and Internet copyrights,” she reveals. “But I barely practiced, like only two or three months after I got my degree and that was it. I’m never going to be a lawyer again. I really have an artistic mind. It’s something you can’t fight.” It was precisely Gaëlle’s fighting spirit and experience on the French national fencing team that propelled her into show business and coordinating projects like the Oscar-nominated World War II film Outside the Law and the horror flick Martyrs. Her next appearance is in the upcoming CBS series Beverly Hills Cop starring Eddie Murphy. Cohen reveals to Rosebud what it took to become Hollywood’s hottest new stuntwoman:

heart stopped. They were actually shooting the scene where the Navy Seals were entering Osama Bin Laden’s compound. I played one of the women in the restaurant during a big explosion. We were all on wires crossing the room. That was a tough one. The conditions were not as protected or padded as in L.A. But then I got to meet her. Oh my gosh, that lady! When [Bigelow] enters the room there’s a silence. She’s so powerful, but she has a very quiet voice. Everybody’s afraid of her. One of the costume girls was like, “Don’t look at her or talk to her. Talk to her assistant.” But we had a friend in common. I had just finished coordinating [The Tall Man] with Jessica Biel and we became close friends. She told me, “If you ever meet Kathryn tell her hello from me.” So when I introduced myself, [Bigelow] had a big smile and she was super-nice. She had just shot a commercial with [Biel]. After we finished the scene she came and shook all our hands. I hope I can work with her again.

Rosebud: How often do you get put in these tiny costumes for stunts? Have you ever rebelled against wearing them? Gaëlle Cohen: I could write a book. It’s so funny. Sometimes you wonder if the costume designer is reading the script. One of my jobs in Europe, there were two girls playing bodyguards to a big businessman. In the real world, you’d be wearing a pantsuit and flat shoes to be able to run, kick, react, whatever. Nope. When we came for the fitting the costume designer showed up with super-high heels and skirts that were up to the crotch. I was like, “OK, it would look super-cool if we were in a club. But we’re supposed to give big kicks.” So I did a huge kick in the air in the costume and she was like, “That’s not possible.” You could see my crotch! Women are always put in heels. We have to do everything with no pads or very little pads. Men are so lucky. They always have coats, big suits, but women have to jump over a table in less.

Sometimes the costume designer is like, “OK, I’m going to put you in a mini-skirt.” And I have to say, “I have a lot of scars.” And then they’re like, “OK, wow, pants then.” It’s part of the job. You get scars because you get hurt. Even simple stuff, like a man grabs you and slams you on a table, and you might do it well and get up feeling fine. But part of the metal might have caught your arm and you’re bruised. It’s no big deal, but I have scars. I hope no one ever shaves my head.

Rosebud: What was it like working on Zero Dark Thirty? What sorts of stunts did you perform for it? Cohen: It was one of the best experiences of my life. When they called me it was a supersecret project. They told me I’d find out when I arrived to Jordan. So I showed up and I thought it was a Mummy-type movie and the production manager told me that Kathryn Bigelow was the director and my

Rosebud: What are some common misconceptions about stunt people that you’d like to squash right now? Cohen: When most people see me, they say, “Oh my god, you look good! You look like a woman!” They have an idea of bulky truckers. They think you have to be manly to do stunts. It’s the exact opposite. If you look like a man, there’s no way an actress would accept you as her double. People think stunt people are invincible and you get put in situations where you’re like, “Seriously, dude? We’re still human beings.” [In] one of my first movies I was getting killed by having a wall fall on me. And it was a real wall, so there was going to be a puppet underneath. Then the first assistant director was like, “So you’re going to lie here and then we’ll give you a countdown before the wall falls.” And then the stunt coordinator came over and said we were using a puppet. He said, “There’s no way that wall is falling on her.” And the AD (assistant director) said, “Well is she a stuntwoman or not?” There’s this attitude of, “Oh, they can take a bullet.”

Rosebud: What was one of the scariest stunts you’ve ever executed? Cohen: I am always worried before a stunt — a stair fall, high fall, burn, getting hit by a car, jumping from one horse to another. I always have that little pinch and for me I think that’s good. It means I’m still focused and careful. The scariest was a roof fall with someone else in Spain. We were actually falling from a roof onto another roof together and then falling on the ground. The guy I was doing it with was not very aware of his body so I was scared, not because of the fall, but because of the fall with him. The night before I was like, “How can I make sure I am safe with that guy with me?” He arrived on the ground first and he landed badly. He almost fell on his neck and I landed next to him flat. But if I had been heavier than him he would’ve landed on me.

Rosebud: Stunt people are like professional athletes in that it only takes one accident to end a career. What was your worst injury? Cohen: One of my worst accidents was when I had to jump from a roof onto a car. Everything was rehearsed, so for me it was not scary. When I arrived on the car my leg just exploded, shattered. My tibia was broken in three pieces and totally twisted. I have no more side bone on the tibia. My meniscus came out. I had to lie down and not do anything for 10 months. It’s a very expensive price to pay when something goes wrong. It could’ve been worse; you could be paralyzed or die.

Rosebud: Have you ever been close to quitting? Cohen: I’ve never thought about quitting, but I get fed up. The only thing that would make me quit is to have a baby and start a family.

Rosebud: You’re used to battling bad guys to save the planet, but what about in real life? In what ways have you fought for the environment? Cohen: I have given money to organizations like Green Planet. If everybody is responsible, then everything will be better. Now we have on set someone who’s in charge of making sure everything is green. It’s really cool. I always try to be respectful of stupid everyday things, like don’t use too many towels at hotels, recycling, and thinking about the environment. It’s not as big in Europe as it is here. My sister composts and I’m moving into a house with a garden soon, and I was thinking about having a compost pile. It’s better than putting it down the drain, then you can use it as a natural fertilizer. That’s the best.

As the stories got passed around, the buzz generated by their haunting mysteries seemed to grow more and more alluring. Perhaps the most amazing thing about these urban myths is how universal they were. In an age long before the Internet, kids growing up in ’70s Philadelphia heard the same tales as kids growing up in ’80s Seattle. And so it is with spine-tingling nostalgia that Rosebud Magazine presents five essential urban legends.

POP ROCKS + COCA-COLA = DEATH!

Pop Rocks are a tiny fruit-flavored candy that hit the market in the ’70s. They contained a little carbonation that created a popping sound and sensation in your mouth, which when combined with soda, specifically Coke, was rumored to cause your stomach to explode. This urban legend was usually accompanied by the additional detail that Mikey from the Life cereal commercials had suffered an untimely death from the lethal confection combination. The story gained such strength that General Foods, manufacturer of Pop Rocks, sent 50,000 letters to schools, took out full-page ads in major publications and sent the candy’s inventor on speaking tours to quell the hysteria.

ALLIGATORS IN THE SEWERS Schoolyards were once abuzz with the story of a boy who got a baby alligator as a gift and flushed the pet down the toilet, sending it to the sewers, where it grew to full size and began devouring people. This has been a popular legend despite the fact that it’s essentially impossible for an alligator to thrive in a sewer. But the premise is just credible enough to keep the story going, and even to have produced a campy 1980 horror film, creatively titled Alligator.

MR. ROGERS HAD A VIOLENT PAST

This is one myth that had a few variations. Depending on where you grew up, you heard that Fred Rogers, host of the popular children’s show Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, had either been a Navy SEAL, a top-notch sniper in Vietnam or a child molester. Apparently something about Rogers’ wholesomeness was too pure to be believed. However, nothing nefarious or dark was ever uncovered regarding the beloved children’s host, and since his 2003 death, the rumors have faded.

BLOODY MARY This was a popular story for sleepovers. The legend goes that if you stand in front of a mirror and say “Bloody Mary” three times, you’ll conjure the ghost of a woman executed for murder. In most variations of this legend, anyone who performs the incantation dies, which is a good way to prevent the theory from being field-tested by inquisitive sixth-graders. And thus, the story was only rarely debunked.

GOOD SAMARITAN Here’s an urban legend that continues to circulate to this day, and not just among kids. The story goes that a motorist pulls up to help a guy in a fancy car fix a flat tire. The guy with the flat tire asks for the good Samaritan’s address, and a week later the helpful motorist gets $10,000 in the mail. It turns out the guy with the flat tire was some celebrity, whose identity changes over the years depending on the story. Lately, it’s common to hear that it was Donald Trump.

Or maybe you have been training for years but need a motivational coach who can put you through the paces, dust off the cobwebs of your routine and give you new insights into working out. You want a personal trainer. But personal trainers can be very expensive, anywhere between $60 and $90

Well, it certainly helps if they are a good physical specimen whose body you would not mind owning. Having a degree in kinesiology or any fitness diplomas does not hurt either, but given the choice between someone with book knowledge who is not a very fine specimen and someone who looks the part, my money goes on the latter.

What is just as important is their power of articulation, their ability to express concepts and techniques that may not be readily apparent to the layperson. Sometimes these ideas come intuitively to athletes with great physiques built through exercise and resistance training, but those ideas can be difficult for some people to communicate clearly. This level of expression from a trainer takes creativity, great insight into human physiology and the mechanics of exercise, and a command of language.

Here is how to interview a potential trainer: • Do they appear above average in their fitness and carry themselves well? • Are they articulate and involved in their pitch to you about being your trainer? • Do they provide insights in their pitch – things that had not occurred to you about fitness that make you feel they know their stuff ? • Do they have good energy and a positive, upbeat attitude that is not ego-driven but built on self-confidence? • Are they a good listener who pays attention when you express your goals and needs? • Are they punctual?

Beyond these questions, there are still a few other strategies to picking a good trainer. Ask your potential trainer if you can pay for a session before you commit to a package, and ask if you can do a full-body circuit to test their knowledge of exercise and their coaching style. If they merely give you instructions, then stand and watch you perform the movements, they are probably not a good trainer. A good trainer motivates and encourages you with pep talks as you train. A good trainer will also correct you between sets. If they tend to schmooze between sets, they are likely not engaged enough. A good trainer will engage in small talk but will get you back in the game if you start to ramble and socialize too much. Their goal is to get you into shape. Good trainers are motivators and people we want to emulate. Interview them like anyone you would hire. Also remember that a good personal trainer will not rope you in and make you dependent on their services. Part of their job is to help you get self-motivated and self-sufficient. Pity the person who’s forgotten the pleasure of sticking their hands in the dirt, pulling up weeds and stamping down earth over freshly planted seeds. Gardening isn’t the kind of thing people think of for stress relief, but it seems like there may be something to it. Why else would the near universal childhood memory of getting your hands dirty in the garden stick so strongly? And why do grandmas the world over have such neatly tended plots?

Now that we’re no longer dependent on our skill with soil for survival, gardening has become one of the healthiest, lowest-impact forms of exercise out there. Just 30 minutes in the garden has been shown to burn upwards of 200 calories. Not bad for an activity that basically requires sitting in the sun with a cold drink. Getting your vitamin D on while digging in the dirt has been shown to enhance cognitive performance and naturally boost your mood in the short and long term — those seeds do end up blooming. The repetitive and creative functions of gardening stimulate the creative center of the right brain, stimulating our senses and eliminating negative tension. The pleasurable feelings we get from working in the soil may also have a biological function. A recent study out of the University of Colorado at Boulder found that mice injected with a harmless bacteria found in soil, Mycobacterium vaccae, experienced a serotonin boost. The lead doctor on the study, Christopher Lowry, hypothesizes that this all-natural Zoloft comes from the time when we were dependent on our own cultivation for survival. Now that we’re so far removed from food production, the lack of these bacteria in our environments may have thrown our immune systems (and mental health) for a loop. So get on your knees and dig.
