We also believe in listening to our clients and actively engaging with stakeholders. We utilize proven facilitation techniques to understand the issues, challenges, and trends affecting their organization, campus, real estate portfolio, or community. Strategic thinking requires both experience and a broad perspective. Solving today’s real estate, facilities, land use, and infrastructure challenges requires a team that can look beyond nearterm concerns. Our team is recognized for thinking big, for tackling tough problems, for building consensus, and for creating clarity from complexity. As outlined in the following pages, APG offers strategic thinking around the creation of resilient places at every scale. A complex world is better when it’s in balance. Using a framework of 16 filters, the EcoPlan model ensures that the foundation of all projects are built upon a balanced foundation of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. This foundation gives us the power to evaluate and measure design and planning solutions for outcomes that are as feasible as they are resilient.
THE PEOPLE. Public Engagement A solution is only as strong as the people experiencing the outcome. Successful plans are grounded in meaningful community engagement with a broad group of stakeholders. Our goal is to understand local issues, incorporate community knowledge, and build consensus around a vision. This process is invested in as an opportunity to cocreate innovative solutions with those people for whom it hits closest to home.
THE OUTLOOK. Jacobs + Smart Cities The best environments are those that can adapt for the future. The Jacobs + Smart Cities effort rises to the challenge of optimizing resources – especially time and space – by offering a full spectrum of program management services and partnering with other Smart City consultants and experts. We apply this thinking as a way of creating dynamic places that incorporate horizontal smart infrastructure and smart building asset programs to become affordable, accessible, and engaging for all citizens.
THE TECHNOLOGY. Jacobs Connected Enterprise Technology is advancing quickly, and so is the need to harness advancements for better decisions and brighter solutions. Jacobs Connected Enterprise provides unique value through capabilities and experience in both operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT). Our team understands market challenges and this strategy allows us to bridge the gap between services provided by an engineering company and a technology group to create fully integrated decisions and solutions in an accelerating digital world.
THE CATALYST. “Sprint Start Programming Great ideas require momentum. Our experience with clients, authorities, and industries of all kinds has proven that interactive planning sessions work. Through Sprint Start Programming, critical issues and opportunities are identified early-on in projects and consensus is built around a path to exploring solutions and delivering results. Sprint Starts allow for the immediate understanding of shared goals, leading to solutions that can be implemented quickly and effectively.

Portfolio + Facility Planning Portfolio Planning is a process that considers existing conditions, business drivers, and future requirements for the organization. The process helps clients develop a long-term plan to support operations and informs investment decisions. Facility Planning, including architectural programming, defines the details and requirements for project implementation. Our facility planning team uses the Problem SeekingSM process to categorize and analyze project information. This process includes the following steps: Establish Client/User Goals; Collect, Organize, and Analyze Facts; Uncover and Test Concepts; Determine Needs; and State the Problem. Major outcomes of the programming process include clearly defined space and adjacency requirements and the associated block and stack diagrams, which form the foundation of design solutions as well as move and relocation strategies.
Strategic Sustainability Long-term Value Driven by Transformational Sustainability + Resilience Global water stress, climate change, and resource constraints are creating complex challenges for public and private sector leaders that require innovative solutions. The business case for action includes growing expectations among citizens, consumers, and investors for higher levels of risk management and sustainability performance as well as helping to achieve United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development goals. Our approach is to partner with our clients to co-create implementable solutions that reduce risks, increase resiliency and create shared social, environmental and economic value. We not only design innovative solutions, but also implement them using our global architecture, engineering, construction, operations and maintenance capabilities.
Planning Our planning team applies a systems-based approach that integrates complex natural and man-made systems to achieve social, environmental, and economic sustainability. We provide a framework that examines overlapping, interdependent systems influencing the triple bottom line of a project, organization, or community. In order to respond to client needs to meet business drivers and market demands, our framework is flexible and can accommodate changes in density and use over time. We are also sensitive to the unique cultural and environmental needs of a site and formulate place-based responses. We leverage technology such as GIS and BIM to create smart tools for decision support.
Urban Design Our urban design team articulates urban form, character, and quality, creating dynamic places for people. We work at various scales – from the suburban town center to the small town and the urban core – with sensitivity to the components which ultimately define these areas. We strive to design vibrant, mixed-use environments that support desired densities and respond to market conditions, and we leverage important elements such as public open space and transit to create value and attract people. We believe in the importance of a community’s walkability and the presence of high-quality streets and street networks to promote connectivity.
Landscape Architecture The art and science of landscape architecture balances creativity with complex ecological systems. A sustainable landscape contributes to human well-being, yet conserves valuable natural resources, maintains diversity of species, and prevents the destruction of ecosystems. Our team is driven by a deep respect for natural systems, and inspired by human constructs and the social interactions they influence. We see projects differently – through the lenses of environment, social, and economic sustainability. Our projects are recognized for their solutions-oriented design, client-focused process and exceptional functionality. We examine the initial concerns and site context and work with clients through the realization of of the built vision.

Visual Media Services We offer a comprehensive set of design visualization services for our clients. From a simple 2D illustration to 3D animation composited into live video to interactive online custom software and mobile applications, we work to provide the highest quality and most cost effective solution for your needs. Starting from existing client-provided content or from scratch, we produce high-quality products. Using 3D/4D/5D models, animation, photo-simulation, and infographics, our visualization experts create engaging, compelling imagery that provides a window into the future and allows clients to envision how a project or process will occur over time. Visualization provides an accurate method of examining alternatives at the planning and design stages, when options are most open. Early communication of design alternatives, made possible by design visualization, helps identify, explore, and resolve issues so projects can move forward. Graphics and visualization services are particularly valuable for public involvement and information programs, where the goal is to build consensus and communicate design intent.

Community + Regional Planning The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is the core concept that drives Jacobs’ approach to community planning. Planning is a complex enterprise no matter the scale: city, town, or region. A wide array of systems – land use, utilities, transportation, natural features, housing, economic and social – must be analyzed and addressed comprehensively in collaboration with the community. The unique cultural and historic context of a place must be recognized, respected, and included. We understand a comprehensive approach is essential to ensure that the overall benefits will exceed the trade-offs of actions and investments. We bring a collaborative spirit, innovative ideas, and the realistic mindset required to build thriving and sustainable communities – communities that its residents desire.

Such plans are visionary, fiscally attainable, and sustainable, both financially and environmentally. We work with clients to develop viable long-term plans that guide and catalyze this type of project, providing the tools to build the required consensus amongst the various stakeholders for success.
