Hearing Check Advantage Pharmacy and Australian Hearing have teamed up to offer the community FREE hearing checks. The hearing checks will be conducted by experts from Australian Hearing, and available on selected days at participating Advantage Pharmacies across Australia. Here are some signs that may indicate the need to have your hearing checked: • Ringing sensation in the ears • Constantly having to repeat what people are saying • Finding it hard to hear when there’s back ground noise • Family and friends notice that you talk too loudly and listen to audio on high volume A hearing check takes 15 minutes to complete and measures what sounds you can and can’t hear. The results are mapped on an audiogram which shows your hearing thresholds. If results indicate you may have a hearing loss, Australian Hearing staff will assist you with the next steps you may have to take with regards to your hearing health.

Getting Your Hearing Checked Did you know? We hear noise through vibrations. Sound travels along the ear canal and causes the eardrum to vibrate, which in turn causes movement of the 3 bones in the middle ear. Then, the vibrations also get passed on to thousands of hair cells inside the cochlea which is the hearing organ. These hair cells send a signal to the brain which interprets it as sound. Gentle vibrations make soft sounds, while large vibrations make loud sounds. We can also distinguish pitch through how rapid the vibrations are. Hearing checks test a person’s ability to hear the loudness and pitch of sounds. The audiologists that conduct the hearing checks would chart your results on a graph called an audiogram. Audiologists can assess your degree of hearing loss as well as identifying whether it is caused by problems in certain parts of the ear.

Ask your local Advantage Pharmacist about how you can get your hearing check today!

Ear Wax Build Up Did you know? Ear wax is actually keeping your ears clean! The skin that lines the ear canal secretes a waxy substance called cerumen. It is produced to protect the delicate skin of the ear canal, and its stickiness is designed to trap bacteria, dirt and other irritants therefore it also helps prevent infections. The waxy substance will eventually migrate towards the outer ear. Movements of your jaw through chewing and talking help move the wax out of the ear canal. Unfortunately, sometimes the wax can build up in the ear canal and cause blockage. Some people tend to be more prone to this, if they have a tendency to produce a lot of ear wax. Additionally, since ear wax is designed to trap dirt and bacteria, if your surrounding environment is dusty you may also be more prone to blockage of the ear canals. When your ears are blocked due to a build up of ear wax, you would often experience symptoms such as a sensation of fullness inside the ear and mild deafness. In some cases, it may also cause earache and ringing in the ear. Ear wax build up is harmless in most cases, and can easily be treated by using common Over-The-Counter products which can loosen up the ear wax so it can move naturally out of the ear more easily. Ask your local Advantage Pharmacist on tips of how to best use the ear wax remover products.

Hearing Loss Hearing loss refers to reduced hearing which can considerably affect personal and work life. There are two main types of hearing loss: 1. Hearing loss caused by obstruction due to impacted ear wax or malfunctions in the outer or middle ear. 2. Hearing loss caused by damage to the hair cells in the inner ear which often deteriorates as you age, or the damage can be caused by exposure to loud noise, chemicals, medications, even diseases such as meningitis. Ear care is therefore important, as a range of conditions and events can contribute to hearing loss. Here are some tips to reduce your risk of hearing loss: • Take care when cleaning your ears to avoid damaging the delicate skin in the ear canals • Avoid swimming in dirty water • Dry your ears after bathing or swimming • Avoid hearing damage through injury by taking care when playing sports • Avoid exposure to loud noises or wear personal hearing protection if using loud equipment.

Your Ears Other than to hear, our ears also play an important role in keeping our balance. The inner ear contains the vestibular system which is the organ of balance. Together with our vision and movement sensors in the skin, muscles, and joints, our brain processes the position of our body and thus determines our balance. Unfortunately, our ears can experience problems which affect our hearing and balance. Some common problems include: • Hearing loss or deafness, which can be congenital or acquired later in life • A build up of ear wax which can cause temporary deafness • Dizziness, vertigo, and loss of balance • Sensation of ringing in the ears, also known as tinnitus • Ear infections caused by bacteria

Ask your local Advantage Pharmacist about suitable Over-The-Counter solutions for some of these common ear problems, and get referred to a medical professional if required.
