UCD CENTRE FOR STUDY ABROAD The UCD Centre for Study Abroad provides a resource to all non-EU students studying at UCD promoting intellectual challenge, cultural immersion and individual growth. The Centre’s team comprises of coordinators from UCD Colleges & Schools, each providing a structured and responsive service to students studying within their discipline. The core ideals of the Study Abroad Programmes at UCD are founded on the key objectives of academic excellence and cultural integration.


Academic Programme

Housing

Typically, Study Abroad students take six modules during a semester. Modules are chosen from an extensive range available from UCD’s undergraduate degree programmes. Study Abroad Students attend regular classes alongside Irish and other international students. Project and study groups are designed to ensure that students are fully integrated into the UCD learning environment. Classes are typically 3 hours per week per module. Grading is a based on continuous assessment and final examination.

On-campus housing Students are accommodated in apartments shared by three/ four persons each with their own single room.

The Centre for Study Abroad facilitates students in suggesting suitable accommmodation. Houses are furnished and within walking distance of Dublin city centre and on a bus route to UCD.

Cultural/Social Program One of the essential elements of the study abroad experience at UCD is for international students to fully understand and appreciate the richness of Irish society and culture. Our cultural/social programme offers Study Abroad students the opportunity to learn about Irish culture through a series of excursions and field trips in Dublin and across the island of Ireland. The country’s rich and complex history has left a remarkably artistic legacy and modern Ireland continues to be a global centre of artistic and cultural excellence. Student Services

Sports The sports facilities at UCD are among the finest in the country and reflect the popularity and significance of sport at the university. All levels of proficiency are catered for in the fifty six official sports clubs. UCD has facilities for soccer, rugby, Gaelic games and hockey, in addition to an athletics track and tennis courts. There is also a large indoor sports centre with squash courts, sports halls and a state of the art fitness suite.

Student Clubs and Societies

Student Health and Welfare The UCD Student Health Centre provides a free and confidential service to all registered students at the university. Male and female doctors are available by appointment and a nurse is available throughout the day. While at UCD, study abroad students may also avail of the support services of counsellors, advisers and chaplains.

An exciting feature of life at UCD is the range of over one hundred student societies and clubs that are all open to Study Abroad students. These provide an opportunity to become more involved in college life and pursue a variety of interests. Library The UCD James Joyce Library has a stock of 1 million volumes, including some 30,000 early printed books, and important collections of Irish manuscripts. From Food Science to Forestry, Horticulture to Human Nutrition, Agribusiness to Animal Science, Engineering Technology and Environmental Science to Equine Science, Crop Production to Sportsturf Management - the Agriculture Study Abroad Programme at UCD provides exciting opportunities to advance your knowledge while studying at Ireland’s leading university. The Agri-Food sector is Ireland’s most important indigenous industry and UCD is the only Irish University offering the Bachelor of Agricultural Science (BAgrSc) degree. Over 50% of our undergraduate students are from urban or non-farm backgrounds, reflecting the wide range of degree programme options available within Agri-Food, Nutrition and the Environment.


FACILITIES

ASSESSMENT

The Agriculture and Food Science Centre provides excellent learning support facilities for our visiting students, including a purpose-built Food Science building with dedicated food laboratories and a sensory evaluation suite. Students have access to UCD’s 250 hectare research farm, Lyon’s Estate, which is located at Newcastle, Co. Dublin and to glasshouse and field research facilities on the Belfield campus.

Formal examinations are set in December, March and May. International students are expected to undertake examinations in accordance with University regulations. Increasingly, project and class-based work forms a component of the assessment process.

UCD CLINTON INSTITUTE FOR AMERICAN STUDIES

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMME

The Clinton Institute for American Studies was established at University College Dublin in 2003 with the support of the Irish government, in recognition of the contributions made by President Clinton and his administration to the Peace Process. The Institute promotes teaching and research on US history, culture and politics and on transatlantic relations.


UCD Clinton Institute Semester Abroad

Assessment

The Clinton Institute Ireland, Semester Abroad is a Spring semester programme of modules tailored for US-based students who wish to gain an international perspective on their own country. The programme consists of several modules which examine America’s global role and it provides students with an opportunity to closely study the perceptions and impacts of the US in another country.

CSI students undertake the same examinations as domestic students in accordance with University regulations. Increasingly, essay and class-based work forms a substantial component of the assessment process.

Credit Transfer

At the end of the semester, UCD provides a transcript of modules attended to assist with credit transfer to the student’s home university.

Students on the programme will take 30 ECT credits, made up of six modules taught at the Institute:

Accommodation

The programme will include a number of social events during the course of the semester. All Clinton Institute Semester Abroad students are encouraged to participate in the events programme of the Institute, which includes research seminars, symposia and conferences - all of which can enrich the learning experience.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMME

The Study Abroad Programme in the UCD Colleges of Arts and Human Sciences was established in 1986. Study Abroad students attend the same modules and sit the same examinations as Irish students to ensure full cultural integration and maximum educational beneďŹ t for all students. Admission is typically for the full academic year, however students are also accepted for one semester.

Students also have the option of incorporating one elective module into their 30-credit semestrial load. Credit Transfer It is the responsibility of applicants to agree with their home universities any arrangements for credit transfer. PLEASE NOTE it is not possible to extend study in UCD beyond the year for which an application has been accepted or subsequently to register as a full-time undergraduate student in the Colleges of Arts or Human Sciences.

The UCD Quinn School of Business state of the art, modern building was opened in 2002. It has one of the most advanced eLearning infrastructures in Europe. As part of this infrastructure, laptop computers are an integral part of the learning process. If you don’t have your own laptop there is a leasing programme available for Study Abroad students who require a laptop for their semester at UCD.

Irish History In addition to business modules, Study Abroad students are required to take a special module focusing on Irish History and Culture. This module is taught under the same structure as the business modules. Field trips to places of historical interest are an integral component of this module.

The UCD Architecture Study Abroad Programme offers visiting students the opportunity to be part of the longest running Architecture programme in Ireland; which is also the only one accredited by the professional institutes of both Ireland and Britain (RIAI and RIBA respectively). UCD’s Architecture modules offer excellent opportunities to enhance your knowledge in all ďŹ elds of Architecture from technical (Architectural Technologies, Structures, Environmental Science) to cultural (Architectural History & Theory, Ecology, Conservation) and managerial (Professional Studies).


Assessment Architecture Study Abroad students are expected to undertake all assessments in accordance with University regulations. Assessments are based on a combination of continuous assessment, project work and end of semester examinations.

Credit Transfer

Facilities Architecture at UCD is at the forefront of the architectural and urban design debate in Ireland. The UCD School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering provides a unique forum for interaction between research, teaching and the practice of Architecture. The School is located at the Richview section of the campus and boasts its own building laboratory, computer laboratories, library and café. Most of the lectures, tutorials, seminars and other module activities happen in these premises.

Module Selection Architecture Study Abroad students have the opportunity to choose from all lecture-based Architecture modules provided they satisfy any prior learning requirements and there are no timetable conflicts. Registration for design studio modules is restricted but may be possible with the approval of the Dean of Architecture. You may also have the opportunity to take part in Architecture field trips to European cities. Students attending UCD for the full academic session may take up to 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits: typically 8 x 5-credit architecture lecture-based modules and 4 x 5-credit elective modules from other subject areas offered in UCD.

At the end of the Semester, UCD provides an official transcript to the home institution. The home institution decides on credits to be awarded for the modules pursued at UCD. It is the responsibility of incoming Study Abroad students to agree with their home institution arrangements on credit transfer and approval of their module selection beforehand. We will be pleased to provide all the necessary information on the modules offered to enable institutions to make their decisions on credit transfer.

UCD ENGINEERING SCIENCE Study Abroad Programme STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMME

The UCD Engineering Study Abroad Programme offers visiting undergraduate students a unique educational opportunity to participate fully in the academic and social life of one of Ireland’s largest Universities, offering the widest range of engineering disciplines. The Engineering educational philosophy at UCD emphasises mastery of analytical skills and the use of quantitative methods.


Assessment Assessment is based on a combination of in-semester components such as mid-semester tests, laboratory practical reports, projects and homework assignments, and formal examinations which take place the end of each semester, i.e. in December and May. Study Abroad students are expected to undertake all assessments in accordance with University regulations.

Facilities The UCD Engineering and Materials Science Centre houses the UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering and the UCD School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. The UCD Newstead Building is the location of the UCD School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering. Engineering Study Abroad students will attend lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals and other module activities in these buildings, but lectures also take place throughout the UCD Belfield campus, so students experience a variety of locations, lecture theatres, seminar rooms and laboratories.

The Study Abroad Programme at UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems aims to provide an exciting opportunity to advance your knowledge of nursing and midwifery while studying at one of Ireland’s leading universities. The aim of our school is to provide our students with the very best opportunities and supports to pursue studies in nursing, midwifery or health systems and to promote safe, person-centered efficient practice. As the oldest university school of nursing and midwifery in Ireland we have played a leading role in the development of nursing and midwifery education, practice and research nationally. We offer four undergraduate programmes which provide entry to professional practice in general nursing, psychiatric nursing, children’s and general nursing and midwifery. Studying at our school offers you the opportunity to meet other students from many cultures and countries.

ASSESSMENT FACILITIES Our programmes are delivered in a state-of-the art learning environment. The Health Sciences Centre consists of top-of-the range lecture facilities, a purpose built clinical skills centre with interactive video equipment, library, information and computing resources and student resource rooms. Students undertake clinical practice at national centres of excellence and our partner hospitals include: St. Vincent’s University Hospital, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, St. John of God Hospital, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, the National Maternity Hospital and Our Lady’s Hospice.

CREDIT TRANSFER The home institution decides on credits to be awarded for modules pursued at UCD. We will be pleased to provide full information on our modules to enable institutions to make decisions regarding the transfer of credits.

ELIGIBILITY THE MINIMUM GPA REQUIREMENT IS 3.00.

In addition to completing the UCD on-line application process, a transcript of academic record to date and letter of recommendation from an academic referee should be sent to the Science Programme Office before the application deadline.
