UNION

UCD STUDENTS’

If you ever have a question or an issue that needs solving, come into the Students’ Union corridor located in the Student Centre or check out the virtual reception on our website (www.ucdsu.ie) and we’ll sort you out. We also organise nights out and gigs, fundraise for charities that benefit the student body and if need be, represent you in academic and disciplinary hearings. We have a proud tradition of campaigning for equitable access to education both locally and on a national level. Regardless of what you are after, there is no shortage of ways to get involved and shape the overall college experience throughout the year. Whether you see yourself as the class rep who approaches UCD staff on behalf of your classmates, a steadfast campaigner on social issues, or you have a passion for arranging the craic, your students’ union is yours to shape. For more information, check out our socials and catch us at orientation and freshers’ week. We’ll be handing out goodies, holding events and running workshops on how to survive in UCD!

Welcome to UCD from your Students’ Union! You automatically became a member of UCDSU the moment you registered as a UCD student. This means that you are part of an organisation that acts as the voice for students on campus and works to enhance the college experience of you and your classmates. While arriving in college for the first time can be both exciting and daunting, we encourage you to dive head-first into it and get involved in as many aspects of student life as you can. Your students’ union will be with you every step of the way; inside the classroom to ensure that you are getting the quality education that you came here for, and outside the classroom to try and make your student experience as fulfilling as it can be. Should you encounter any issues at all during your time in UCD, your students’ union is here to support you. Established by students almost 50 years ago, your students’ union is an organisation that is led by students, for students. Like the university, UCDSU is constantly changing to meet the evolving needs of the student body. Whenever you have a problem or question in UCD, your students’ union has you covered. From issues with your education to stress levels, to concerns about your landlord, at undergraduate and postgraduate level, we have democratically elected and trained officers to support and represent you.

It’s really important that you and your classmates elect a class rep during the first few weeks of term. Having a class rep ensures that you have your say on how your course is shaped and that any issues that arise during assessments and exams can be dealt with in a timely fashion. Class reps also receive full training, sit on UCDSU Union Council and provide the two-way information flow between issues in the classroom and our full time officers who represent students on every key university committee. If there is anything you would like your SU to work on or campaign for this year, why not run for class rep or ask your class rep to bring a mandate to Council! No previous experience is necessary and Class Reps receive full training and support from the SU. If you think you’ve got what it takes then collect a nomination form from the SU reception or at our Orientation stands, or you can download it online from our website any time before nominations close at the end of September. You will need signatures from five classmates to run and elections will happen early in October.

Behind each campaign coordinator is a campaign crew that any student can join. These are voluntary, unelected positions but still give you the opportunity to be

UNION COUNCIL Union Council is the governing body of the SU and being a class rep isn’t the only way to be a part of it. We have a campaigns forum, made up of campaign coordinators that run events and campaigns pertaining to issues affecting students. We also have an Ents Forum that helps our Entertainments Officer with organising and promoting events. From fundraising to gigs to nights out, there is something for everyone! Union Council is tasked with holding us elected officers accountable, steers the work of the SU and makes decisions on where the UCD student body stands on topical issues. There are still positions available so get in touch with Robyn and Ciara for more information or go to www.ucdsu.ie

STUDENTS’ UNION SHOPS Your Students’ Union runs three shops on Campus. One under the James Joyce Library, another in the Sports Centre and one in the Engineering Building. It’s the perfect spot to grab a cheap coffee or a meal deal for lunch or that pen or calculator you forgot to bring with you! All profits in the SU shops go back to the SU to help fund more services and supports for students.
