CASE STUDY
BREAKING NEW GROUND WITH WIRELESS TRIPLE PLAY
“As consumers demand richer, on demand media services, we must constantly innovate and exceed our customers’ expectations. We are among the first in France to offer true high performance IPTV over a wireless network. We were very impressed by the continuous efficiency offered by our existing Cambium network to deliver a high performance triple play offering.” Vincent Carrière, President and Chief Executive of XiLAN
SITUATION Consumer demand for voice and high-speed bundled multimedia services is increasing rapidly. To remain competitive in this fast moving market, XiLAN decided to investigate whether it could also offer video services over its existing networks. The main challenge was to see if the network could overcome the technical barriers that can impair the transmission of video over wireless. For instance, introducing video can lead to network congestion, that in turn, impacts service quality elsewhere on the network. Moreover, television signals are highly sensitive to jitter and if the network fails to provide exceptionally robust and stable transmission, images can break up. In fact, during the testing phase customers also reported this as a significant service issue. When one user was watching television or a video the picture would degrade if another user in the same residence commenced a high-capacity Internet download. SOLUTION Working closely with Anevia, a leader in video streaming solutions and service infrastructure for live TV and video
CUSTOMER PROFILE XiLAN is an innovative Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) who supplies and installs turnkey high-speed Internet networks. It provides research, design and hardware solutions, including network installation and maintenance. It specializes in using wireless technologies from Cambium to deliver broadband services to over 100 towns or villages in rural areas, primarily in the north and southwest regions of France. In these localities residents have no or very limited ADSL access, known in France as “white areas” or “grey areas”.
on demand, XiLAN set up the necessary hardware in its network control center. It also installed set-top-boxes and routers in subscribers’ homes. All participants in the test were able to immediately receive high quality video transmission without an increase in bandwidth. This was possible as the Cambium network has been designed using an OFDM modulation scheme with optimizes interference tolerance and improves the quality of data delivery, irrespective of services offered, obstructions, user numbers or user density. RESULT The successful trial is generating great interest both among XiLAN’s existing customer base and new clients and it is already signing up its first triple play customers. This increased offer leads the way to additional revenue streams for XiLAN and ensures it remains competitive. Moreover, by delivering excellent Quality of Service for voice, data and video, XiLAN is confident that the technology will help cultivate customer loyalty.
