About ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 Series

Fanless Compact Embedded Computers, Ready for Versatile Applications Advantech’s ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series of Compact Embedded Computers are designed to give developers fast, convenient and simplified solutions for industrial and embedded applications. The embedded design, rugged features and powerful computing technology deliver reliability and flexibility. These computers are targeted to satisfy customers looking for a robust and compact computing platform with an industrial design and built-in I/O to handle diverse applications.

Reliable

• Aluminum Casing Designed with aluminum casing and fins, the ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series not only come with superior heat dissipation capability but also excellent corrosion resistance. This ensures the reliability in outdoor environments.

• Fanless Design Without rotating parts, such as a CPU fan, system fan, power supply fan, the Compact Embedded Computers are designed with extended MTBF and require very low maintenance.

• Limited Internal Cabling For general embedded computers, cables are used for wiring between connectors and CPU boards. These internal cables may increase the risk of system failure due to broken cables, loose contacts, or mistakes in assembly. But since connectors on the ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series are soldered directly on the PCB, the internal cabling inside every embedded computer chassis is strategically optimized.

Ruggedized • High Tolerance to Shock and Vibration Designed with onboard CPU, memory, flash and strengthened connectors, the ARK-1000/3000/ 4000/5000 series endure up to 70G of shock and 7G of vibration under operation, and are MIL-STD810F compliant. For even greater resistance, DRAM optionally can be glued into position for use in environments specially prone to shock and vibration.

• Superior Thermal Design Advantech’s Compact Embedded Computers are designed with heat pipes and aluminum thermal fins, supporting wide operating temperatures from -40 to 75° C. The ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series also come with low-voltage CPUs, industrial-grade components to meet mission critical applications.

Easy Installation

• Compact Size Unlike the traditional IPC with sizeable chassis, the ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series are compact, slim and light-weight, saving space in working areas.

• Multiple Mounting Options To meet the demands of various applications, the Compact Embedded Computers come with multiple mounting options. From DIN-rail and VESA, to wall-mount and desktop, the ARK-1000/ 3000/4000/5000 series make an easy, hassle-free fit into your system.

Product Feature Highlights

• Harsh Environment Proof Advantech offers a range of services that enable the ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series to operate in harsh conditions. Combined with additional services such as component qualifying and manufacturing in-process testing, these services allow increased support for outdoor, military, aerospace, transportation, remote monitoring, and any mission critical application where the cost of failure is high.

• Wide Operating Temperature The ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series are housed in a specially cast and milled solid aluminum block with thermal fins, which help dissipate heat. Its specially designed fanless thermal solutions with embedded heatpipes allow wide temperature operation without active cooling. Furthermore, Wide Temperature Testing Solutions are in place, including Phoenix operation and Phoebus Design, for dynamic and static testing to ensure the ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series meet extreme temperature requirements. Phoebus Design uses pre-qualified components to design SBCs that operate in extreme temperatures. Selective boards undergo four hours’ extreme temperature testing to ensure the boards continue to operate and boot-up properly at -40 ~ 70º C. The ARK-4000 series with Phoebus Design operate perfectly in environments where heat, extreme cold or thermal shock are frequent.

• High Tolerance to Vibration and Shock The ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series are designed with high tolerance to shock (up to 70G) and vibration (up to 7G) for harsh environments, such as in-vehicle, transportation and fleet applications. Industrial-grade components are specified starting with the original product design. Also, onboard CPU, memory, flash, and strengthened connectors are in place to reduce the potential risk of system failure due to vibration or shock. In addition, a glued DRAM service may be adopted to keep memory secure in environments prone to shock and vibration. These Military Standard MIL-STD-810F Compliant Testing Solutions are further applied to ARK-1000/4000 series to strictly certify ruggedization: • Vibration Test: MIL-STD-810F, Method 514, Procedure I • Shock Test: MIL-STD 810F, Method 516.5, Procedure I

• Boot Safe: Protect from Storage Crashes As part of the Embedded BIOS services, Boot-Safe is Advantech-patented BIOS technology that can store an OS, such as Windows CE, Linux, FreeDOS, or QNX, inside the BIOS. With the OS stored in BIOS, the system boots up without relying on any HDD, USB storage, or a CF card. Boot-Safe makes boot-up both safer and faster. Using only a motherboard, BIOS, and memory, the system can boot directly to the OS, effectively saving hardware seek time. And because the system boots every time from the same pristine OS, it is totally protected from boot virus attacks. Boot Safe includes the Himem and Format programs. It also provides the following commands for application developers. • BEEP • BREAK • CHDIR • CLSn

• COPY • DATE • DEL • DIR

• LOADHIGH • MKDIR • PATH • PROMPT

• RMDIR • SET • TIME • VER

More DOS commands could be customized upon request. ARK-1370 and ARK-4153 have Boot Safe technology built into the BIOS. For other models, Boot Safe is available upon request.

• Security ID: Protect Your Application If you are worried about your application being inadequately or illegally utilized during the project development process, or if you feel insecure about your applications being copied by competitors, the security ID API is the answer you cannot afford to ignore. The Security ID API protects your application through ID encryption. With three different IDs, there are three layers of protection for your application. • Board ID: a unique string for each board, ready in the factory - Read Only • Vendor ID: unique string for each customer or project, set in the factory - Read Only • Customer ID: unique string defined by the customer, and input by the customer Also, you can easily change the security ID by modifying the Advantech ePlatform BIOS.

• Hardware Monitor: Protect from Overheating The stability and reliability of a fanless system mainly rely on the mechanism of its heat dissipation and its temperature monitoring system. The Hardware Monitor (HWM) API is a system health supervision API that monitors real-time temperature, fan, and voltage by inspecting certain condition indexes, such as fan speed, temperature and voltage. The ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series are also designed with a thermal sensor to measure and monitor the temperature in the chassis. If the system overheats, an LED alarm is activated and an alarm message is delivered to the management center via LAN. Also, there are log files that record all events, facilitating any potential troubleshooting.

• Power Saving: Minimize Power Consumption With the growing consensus of environmental protection, power saving had to be one of the key design features for the ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series. This Power Management API provides green power settings for maximum energy savings and performance settings for optimum speed. It makes use of Intel SpeedStep technology to reduce power consumption. The system can adjust the CPU Speed automatically depending on the system load. Clock frequency may also be directly lowered to reduce power consumption. This API allows users to lower the clock rate from 12.5% to 87.5%. In addition, when a system is idle for a period of time, the system can automatically reduce display brightness.

• Hotkey: Offer Easy User Interface Facilitating the development of a friendly user interface for system integrators is one of the key design concepts of the ARK-1000/3000/4000/5000 series. The Hotkey utility is a tool for setting short-cuts for GPIO via keyboard/mouse control, touch panel, or voice. General Purpose Input Output function is a flexible parallel interface that allows a variety of custom connections and supports Digital I/O devices. The Keyboard Controller API allows developers to dynamically set short-cuts for different combinations of keyboard events. Customers can also use it to predefine function keys for a keyboard-less system.

Clean Energy for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Facility Management

Wind Power Generation Monitoring System China

Project In preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics as well as future energy demands, China built a wind turbine power plant to provide clean electricity for Beijing and the Olympic Games. Wind power is clean, plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions when it takes the place of fossil-fuel-derived electricity. Wind power can be produced by large scale wind farms connected to electrical grids, as well as by individual turbines for providing electricity to isolated locations. At the end of 2007, worldwide capacity of wind-powered generators was 94.1 gigawatts. Although wind power currently represents just over 1% of world-wide electricity use, between 2000 and 2007 wind power generation increased more than fivefold globally. In 2007, the capacity of wind-powered generators in China was 6.1 gigawatts. Advantech’s ARK-3382 fanless, embedded computer operates the local monitoring system from within each wind power generating device, helping to provide power for Beijing city and the Olympic Games.

Requirements • Built to withstand fluctuating and harsh weather conditions, temperatures (-20~60° C), shocks, and vibrations • Multiple 10/100Base-T Fast Ethernet ports • Compact, fully sealed, fanless design to protect against dust • High processing power (over 1GHz), low energy consumption • Accepts DC power source • Extended life, high MTBF • Connects to a 15” touch screen (DC power input) to show status of all devices • Designed with thermal fins and heat pipes for easy cooling

ARK-3382

Four LAN, Fanless Embedded Computer

System The wind power generation monitoring system in China consists of two major parts – a central monitoring and control system (CMCS) and a local monitoring and control system (LMCS). Each wind turbine has one LMCS. The local monitoring and control systems are connected to the CMCS through a LAN. Attached devices measure wind speed, power generator voltage, current, input/output, rate of rotation, plus the temperatures of bearings and the gear box. With four LAN ports, the ARK-3382 is capable of connecting to various turbine-related devices to collect data. Using a LAN connection, the cable can reach up to 100 meters. In contrast, if a COM connection is used, cable length must be much shorter and quality of transmissions is erratic. Advantech’s ARK-3382 works as the heart of the remote LMCS, controlling and checking turbine functions, in addition to collecting data from various devices. It feeds the system’s status back to the CMCS and records the exact times and conditions of any irregularities; a productivity report is processed at regular intervals.

Conclusion The ARK-3382 fanless compact embedded computer combines four LAN port interfaces and practical industrial functions into a rugged, compact metal chassis for network intensive based applications. Its fanless design increases MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure). That, matched with its features -- reliable, dust-proof, low maintenance, wide operating temperature range -- makes the ARK-3382 extremely suitable for wind turbine applications, which include lack of on-site operators, and a high exposure to dust and broad temperature ranges. Housing plenty of LAN ports, four 10/100Base-T Fast Ethernet with LAN bypass support on LAN 2 and LAN 3, and either a built-in Intel® ultra low voltage Celeron® M or Intel Pentium® M low voltage processor, the ARK-3382 is an ideal solution to supply clean energy to Beijing for the 2008 Olympics and beyond.
