Market Outlook for Wireless Charging Technology Highlights

The application of wireless charging can be roughly divided into 5 segm devices, consumer electronics, electric vehicles, industrial applications, applications. And the industrial applications and consumer electronics a segments.

Applic Mobile Phone, Portable Product & Accessories 

The charger can support 1 or more charging devices

More and more peripheral products equipped with wireless charging claim it as the new selling feature 

Audio Products

Wireless chargers will be installed anywhere; e.g., in coffee shops, kitchens, airports, cars, etc.

Anywhere, Everywhere

Technology Highlights I 05

ments: mobile , and military are fast-booming

cations Wearable Products ď Ž

Elimination of the charging connector increases the robustness of wearable devices

Electric Vehicles ď Ž

Charging stations are a major concern for electric vehicles. With wireless charging technology, chargers can be implemented under the road to provide for constant power supply

The Vision of Wireless Charging

The vision is to provide electricity anytime, anywhere, without power cable limitations. But keeping the user safe from extensive electromagnetic exposure is a challenge.

Wireless charging could potentially reduce surgery for patients with implanted medical devices.

Technology & Major Alliance Technology Highlights I 07

There are 3 main alliances: WPC, PMA, and A4WP. WPC defines the Qi standard which is the most popularly used in the market. A4WP and PMA announced that they had joined forces in early 2014. The 2 parties plan to launch a dual mode solution against WPC.

Technology Readiness & Limitation

PMA

     

WPC

Charging in the low freq.<125Khz Commercialized solution Power output 5W Transmission distance 5mm EMC Pass Low cost

A4WP

- No unified test standard - No perfect solutions so far

     

Charging in the high freq.~13Mhz Product concept stage Power output 60W Transmission distance 1m EMC Fail Expensive

Technology Highlights I 09

Example: Tablet Charging Time Assumption w/ Qi Std.

WPC

  

RX: a tablet w/ 3200mAh battery and its charging voltage is 4.2V TX: Qi compliant charging IC and w/ 70% charging efficiency: power output is 5Wx 70%= 3.5W So, charging current is 3.5Watt/ 4.2V= 0.8A The charging time of tablet is 3.2Ah/0.8A= 4hr
