The medical profession has been affected perhaps more than others, taking advantage of advanced IT technology with high networking and integration capabilities and quality image display support. Barcode-enabled Point-of-Care (BPOC) is a system using bar coding to capture data electronically at the point of care for more accurate and timely recording and response.

UL60601-1, EN60601-1 and I EC60601-1 Certifi ed Electronic products for medical use must be designed for safety, minimum interference with other electronic devices, and industrial-grade reliability. More specifically, they must meet the safety standards for the country they are used in; the primary standards at present being UL60601-1 for the United States, and EN60601-1/ IEC60601-1 for Europe. In addition to being the base of many harmonized standards, EN60601-1 is also an FDA recognized consensus standard. The UL60601-1 safety standard contains the full text of EN60601-1 and adds certain US-specific requirements as well.

PACS (Picture Archiving & Communication Systems) Picture Archiving and Communication Systems are networked information systems that facilitate archiving, processing and viewing of digital medical images.

With UL60601-1, EN60601-1 and IEC60601-1 approval, Advantech allin-one Point-of-Care (POC) terminals are scalable computing platforms that are designed for easier integration with existing and new hospital system configurations. The PDC-170 series are a bright medical image display with high contrast LCD for effective use in common medical treatment applications such as CT diagnosis, X-ray and PACS. The PDC-170 series have a DVI port for reduced signal distortion during transmission. The trim knob enables medical professionals to precisely control specific parameters such as doseage, while the touchscreen provides a convenient interface that is easier to clean than a keyboard and mouse.

The Medical Desktop PC series is designed to deliver a high performance image processing/analysis platform by incorporating Pentium速 4 Mobile processors and ATI M9 graphics controllers that drive dual 1600 x 1200 displays. This medical Platform is also designed to be easily integrated into existing hospital solutions by providing extensive connectivity with 4 COM ports, 4 USB 2.0 ports, PCI bus slots, a 100 megabit LAN port and a gigabit LAN port. The cost-effective MDPC-4090 uses an external keyboard, mouse and display, while the all-in-one MDPC-4090CDL has a built-in slide-away keyboard/mouse and 7" LCD screen. The MDPC-4090CDL gives medical professionals more room to work by enabling control functions to be carried out on the built-in screen while medical images are viewed on a single external screen. This space-efficient design makes the MDPC-4090CDL perfect for installation as a control console in cramped equipment racks and trolleys for applications like endoscope or ultrasound image processing.

Application Story Nursing Cart POC Terminal Reduces M edication Errors and I mproves Effi ciency

The rapid advancement of medical technologies and the growing expectation for better healthcare is driving medical professionals to seek new ways to effectively perform administrative duties that help eliminate human errors and save valuable time. In addition, increasing the accuracy, immediacy and pertinence of information during emergencies is an essential element of modern healthcare. Doctors and nurses can satisfy these demands by using computers to deliver critical information in a timely manner.

Splash Proof POC Terminals Applied at the M edical Center Alkmaar

Introduction

Location : Alkmaar, the Netherlands Customer: Medical Center Alkmaar, the Netherlands

The Medical Center Alkmaar (MCA) is a big clinical teaching hospital in the North West of the Netherlands. It has more than 900 beds and serves 600,000 inhabitants. This large hospital provides not only patient care, but also training and scientific research as its core activities. This makes it readily disposed to new ways of improving patient care. At the beginning of 2004, MCA began the "Matrix-1" project to digitalize the hospital. In addition to the aim of increasing medical efficiency, the major concern in this project is how to integrate suitable digital technology into humid hospital environments.

Solution Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan is using Advantech's POC-153 multimedia panel computer to record patients' diagnosis and store treatment history, thus eliminating the hassle of paperwork and storage. The POC-153 is installed on mobile medical carts which allow nurses to key in information as they visit patients without having to return to a computer terminal to input updates. In administering medication, scanners have been added to the panel computer, enabling nurses to scan and digitally record medications given to patients, thus reducing the risk of prescribing the wrong medication. Advantech's POC-153 can be easily cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and other cleaning agents. It is also designed with such features as waterresistance, collision-resistance, and long battery life.

Instead of PCs, MCA has applied Advantech's medical POC terminals because of their certifications. UL60601-1/EN60601-1 certifies electromagnetic radiation prevention, while IPX1 and IP65/NEMA4 certify water and dust resistance. This makes them very appropriate for use in S3 areas, the First Aid department and the plaster room, where humidity is regarded as a constant. After testing a few demo units with their own patient information software, MCA found the touchscreen was an advantage. Furthermore, MCA has installed special water-resistant keyboards for workplaces where a lot of patient information needs to be entered and created dual screen solutions combining a Panel Display console with a Panel Computer. In this way, the orthopaedist and other MCA medical staff are able to see detailed X-ray images and patient information at the same time.

System POC-153 is a 15” TFT-LCD display powered by the Intel Celeron M processor, availab with up to 1GB of SDRAM memory. The two USB ports, four serial ports, two one-wa speakers and one PS/2 mouse and keyboard interface make the POC-153 extreme flexible for adding other peripheral equipment. On fully charged batteries, the POC-1 can run up to eight hours, doubling the previous standard requirement. Option features such as 802.11b wireless antenna and touchscreen are also available upon request.
