‘An Open Letter to Bavaria’ By Brigadier General Christopher R. Norrie 7th Army Training Command Bavaria – thank you for the privilege of serving and living here, it has been one of the highlights of my life, and I’m deeply grateful to you all for your friendship and leadership during these difficult times. I am very proud to have humbly served in Bavaria on this very difficult journey over the last two years. When I assumed Command of the 7th U.S. Army Training Command, I believed that our path ahead was very straightforward: train, further build readiness across Europe, and strengthen relationships with friends and partners. While the path through my time in Command certainly included those quite existential and fully consuming tasks, it also included things we could not have imagined. My personal journey, which I had hoped might include social connections and the discovery of new things, was largely filled with sleepless nights spent hoping for the safety of our Soldiers, Families and communities throughout Bavaria, and the difficulties of continuing to choose from a menu of all bad options in the midst of a pandemic. In this, my experience has been the same as so many - our journeys together have been difficult, strewn with obstacles and hardships, and I leave deeply grateful to have had the privilege of crossing paths with you all here in Bavaria, and the honor of serving in this very special place. Our number one priority at the 7th Army Training Command is readiness, and while I’m proud of our units and Soldiers for their commitment to the mission and their hard-earned military prowess, I am equally proud of our communities’ commitment to the same principle of protecting each other in tough times.
We worked hard to hold up our end of being a good neighbor, doing our best to limit the spread of the virus. If how we treat each other in difficult times most reveals who we are as people, then Bavaria is the greatest team in the world. Together, we have selflessly served to ensure the safety of everyone, while working together to further build readiness to deter aggression, in a very uncertain world. We can all be very proud of how we have treated each other – I would not trade this experience for anything, because Bavaria has revealed the very best in our human spirit, the quality of our character, and a determination that will sustain us all for a very long time. We got to experience what truly makes this place special: friendship, and seeing the heart and spirit of the Bavarian people. For generations, American soldiers, civilians, and families have worked, lived, and celebrated side-by-side with the Bavarian people. Through the pandemic we shared loss, challenge, and now relief as we continue to work together to keep each other safe. As Soldiers, we like to think of ourselves as the protectors from external threats, and that’s the foundation of our presence here in Bavaria as part of the NATO Alliance. In the case of COVID-19, it was truly Bavaria that protected our American military community. From the policy-makers in Munich that consistently make tough decisions, to first responders and essential workers that keep us safe and with services running throughout, to everyday people doing their duty to follow the restrictions and share in the struggle. You’ve truly treated our community as one of your own, and you have our eternal thanks. I will forever be so grateful.

The friendships we’ve created here, born out of both tragedy and triumph, will continue. Our Soldiers and Families look forward to returning to experience more of the rich cultural traditions of this amazing area. Personally, the entire Norrie family leaves Bavaria will a full appreciation and understanding of what makes the Bavarian people so
special, and with deep admiration and thanks for the depths of the bond of our friendship. Thank you again for welcoming my family, and the hundreds of thousands of American Soldiers and families like ours over the past seven decades. Habe die Ehre und auf Wiedersehen. Army Medicine Europe makes steady progress in COVID-19 vaccine distribution efforts By Kirk Frady Regional Health Command Europe Vaccination appointments are available for all eligible members of the military community, and Army medical treatment facilities in Europe continue to make steady progress in offering vaccines to everyone who wants one. To date, approximately 30 percent of the military community in Europe have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and about 16 percent have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “Our goal is to be able to offer at least one dose to every member of the Army military community by the first week of June,” said Brig. Gen. Mark Thompson, Regional Health Command Europe commanding general. “In addition, everyone who wants to be vaccinated should be fully vaccinated by the middle of July.” On Dec. 18, 2020 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for the Moderna vaccine, thus making it available to the Department of Defense for distribution and administration to DOD personnel. “On Dec. 28, just 10 days after the emergency use authorization was issued, our MTFs at Vilseck and Grafenwoehr were administering their first vaccines to healthcare workers and first responders,” said Thompson. “That’s a testament to the outstanding work done by the

entire COVID vaccination team, starting with the Defense Department and all the way down to the medics who put the first shots in arms.” Col. Scott Mower, force health protection officer for Regional Health Command Europe, says the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in Europe has required close coordina-
tion between RHCE, U.S. European Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa, Senior Responsible Officers and U.S. Army garrisons. “The SROs, garrisons and other DOD partners continue to play a very active role in the COVID-19 vaccination process,” Mower said. “Their efforts are vital to our ability

to report vaccination requirements, manage tier distribution, and they play a key role in many of our vaccination events. We could not do this without them.” While it has taken some time to work through priority tiers and offer the vaccine to everyone in the military community, vaccines are now widely available at MTFs across the theater. “Getting vaccinated not only protects you, but it helps protect your family, your battle buddy, your unit and your community,” Thompson said. Military leaders are also working on a plan to bring a limited supply of Pfizer vaccine to the military community in Europe, specifically for the adolescent population. “As you may have heard, the Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer vaccine currently includes 16-17 year olds,” said Thompson. “We expect a shipment of Pfizer vaccine in mid to late May. “Initally we will move forward with vaccination of 16-17 year olds, and if the Pfizer Emergency Use Authorization is extended to 12-15 year olds we will vaccinate that age group as well,” Thompson said. Details of those plans are being finalized, but information on how and where the Pfizer vaccine will
be offered to the adolescent population will be provided as soon as it’s available. For those who might be on the fence about deciding whether to get vaccinated or not, the additional benefit of getting vaccinated, is being able to return to many pre-COVID activities. “Our host nations and the United States are making it easier for vaccinated people to travel, eat at restaurants, shop in stores and participate in other activities, so I’d encourage you to get vaccinated,” Thompson said. “However, those privileges for vaccinated people are only valid 14 days after receiving the Janssen vaccine, or 14 days after the SECOND Moderna shot, so don’t skip that second shot.” “In addition, it takes about six weeks from the time you receive your first Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to achieve full effectiveness,” Thompson said. “That’s because you have to wait 28 days between the first and second doses, and it takes 14 days after the second dose for the vaccine to achieve full effectiveness.” That means that those who want to take full advantage of those civilian travel and host nation privileges this summer should get vaccinated as soon as possible. US Army offers COVID-19 vaccination to local nationals By Julian Temblador USAG Bavaria Public Affairs U.S. Army Medical Department Activity-Bavaria, in collaboration with U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria, 7th Army Training Command and the tenant units within the USAG Bavaria footprint, conducted a weeklong COVID-19 Vaccination drive starting on May 3, 2021, at the Multi-Purpose Center on Rose Barracks. According to U.S. Army health officials, the ongoing vaccination drive has been a success. Lt. Col. Sarah Eccleston, commander of U.S. Army Health Clinic Vilseck, stated that this event required great collaboration between the tenant units within the USAG Bavaria footprint. “We’ve been waiting months for the approval to get our local nationals the vaccine,” said Eccleston. “It’s a big win. We work alongside local nationals every day. We’re glad we’re able to offer the vaccinations to them today.” Breslin Gillis, a clinical nurse and officer in charge at the Vilseck Health Clinic, and her team — comprised of volunteers and medical professionals from all over the USAG Bavaria footprint — played a vital role in the drive’s success. “We draw the Janssen vaccine so that they can be administered by the vaccinators. It’s a really good process we have here,” Gillis said. “Especially now, since we can now offer vaccines to local nationals. We’ve had a really good turn out from them.” Offering the vaccines to local national employees was no small feat. During the last few months, U.S. Army leaders in Bavaria have been working with the German government and the Bavarian works council to devise a plan to provide the vaccines to local national employees.
The drive event opened up to local nationals on Tuesday, May 4. Hubert Graser, a supply technician for the 7ATC Property Book Office, was one of the many local nationals to get the vaccine from the U.S. “Everything was easy. I filled out a few forms and waited in line.” Graser said. “I saw a lot of people waiting outside, but it went by fast. I want to say thank you to the U.S. Army for offering this.” USAG Bavaria garrison commander Col. Christopher Danbeck also made statements on the joint effort. “It’s a collaboration,” said Danbeck. “Besides the logistics and physical messaging, we also had our mission partners — USO Bavaria and American Red Cross — at the drive making people more comfortable while they waited for 15 minutes after their shots.” Kate Woodward, a volunteer for USO Bavaria, was one of the many volunteers who helped make the vaccination drive a success. “We are here today providing everyone who has gotten the vaccine with snacks and drinks,” said Woodward. “It’s just something to put a smile on their face and let them know we appreciate them.” The COVID-19 vaccines are still available for local nationals through ongoing vaccine drives. Talk to your chain of command or contact the local army health clinic to learn when the next vaccination event will occur. If you are a local national employee and booked an appointment through the DHA appointment portal, please go back and cancel the appointment. During the vaccination events, please bring your IMPFPASS (German immunization passport) and completed DHA 207 Form.

Farmers’ markets offer healthy alternatives By Molly Hayden USAG Bavaria Public Affairs Growing everything from the famous white asparagus to the eponymous Hallertau hops, Bavaria continues to be the most important agricultural state and the largest producer of food in Germany. But farming in Bavaria is more than sustenance, it’s tradition. For centuries, townspeople have flocked to the local markets to purchase fresh produce, dairy, bread and Bavarian specialties. Today, locals and tourists alike fill baskets to the brim with traditional items and much more. The scents from blooming flowers and colorful spices flow through the market as farmers and artisans peddle their wares. Local honey, farm-raised meat and seafood, pastries and seasonal produce make the farmers’ market a one-stop shop. If you are new to Germany, you may come across items you haven’t seen before. If you’re unsure how to prepare a certain fruit or vegetable, simply ask the farmer. They usually have a few tips on how to make the most out of what they are selling. Below is a list of local farmers’ markets near USAG Bavaria. If any of the listed days is a German holiday, the markets are usually held the day prior. Most markets run from April-October; although, hours vary depending on the weather. • •

By Sidney Sullivan USAG Bavaria Public Affairs Motorcycle Mentorship Safety Day was hosted by the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Safety Office on Friday, May 14. This event consisted of morning riding drills at the Vilseck Airfield and an afternoon group mentorship ride off-post. “We are really happy that we can hold the event this year, because it was unfortunately canceled last year due to increased COVID-19 density rates in the surrounding area,” said USAG Bavaria Safety Director Deborah Gonzales. “This event brings the installation together. It promotes mentorship, and it allows people the opportunity to have safe fun.” To kick-off the event, USAG Bavaria Commander Col. Christopher Danbeck shared a few opening remarks. “Have a lot of fun, and be safe out there,” Danbeck told the attendees. “Mentorship for motorcycle riders is very important. When you go back to your organizations, please continue to watch over the younger guys. You know the real deal – how to stay safe.” He also drew the winning raffle tickets for five Harley Davidson T-Shirt prizes.
Then the group received a blessing from USAG Bavaria Chaplain Col. Shawn McCammon. Before starting the hands-on drills, vehicle inspections were

USAG Bavaria Motorcycle Safety Day was open to all Department of Defense cardholding motorcyclists, which includes installations at Grafenwoehr, Vilseck, Hohenfels and Garmisch. Even motorcyclists from U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach partook in the event. “We [motorcyclists] have a very tight knit group since there are only so many riders in the military community,” said Master Sgt. Robert Lewis, motorcycle safety program coordinator of 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “At the start of the season, it is all about refreshing basic skills, remembering safety protocols and building camaraderie.” The Safety Office is looking for rider coaches, mentors and volunteers to assist the program. DES, Polizei strengthen bonds during training By Julian Temblador USAG Bavaria Public Affairs The Upper Palatinate Polizei and U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria’s Department of Emergency Services held a joint Law Enforcement Weapons Training and Qualification exercise in the Grafenwoehr Training Area on May 18. Soldiers from DES and local Polizei went through the American LEWTAQ to strengthen bonds and train with each other.
“What we are doing for the Germans is to show them how we do [LEWTAQ],” said Staff Sgt. Simonis Gordon, the operations noncommissioned officer for DES. “And how you’re going to be moving and shooting with your patrol rifle at those closer engagements.” This qualification exercise tests law enforcement officials for realworld scenarios. From moving failure drills to weapon transitions, the partici-
pants test their proficiency with both pistols and rifles. The rifle qualification consists of 12 tables, where the participants conduct firing drills from various distances ranging from 50 meters to 3 meters. The pistol qualification consists of 11 tables, where participants shoot a total of 50 rounds from different positions and varying distances (from 2 meters to 25 meters). “I wanted to show [LEWTAQ] to our officers,” said Hubert Beer,
weapons and tactics instructor for the Upper Palatinate Police. “They can use that training to make our weapons qualifications more efficient.” But this exercise was not just about weapons training — it further strengthened the relationship between the two services. “It’s always a good opportunity to work with DES,” said Beer. “We’ve done numerous training events together, and we’ve actually built friendships. It’s a good
opportunity to train together [and] know each other in case anything happens.” According to Simonis, DES supports the Polizei, and the Polizei does the same for DES. “There is a certain camaraderie and brotherhood with all law enforcement officers, and it’s the same here,” said Simonis. “It’s a great opportunity to pick their brain and share our knowledge so that we can better serve the community.”

Hohenfels volunteers recognized for continuing efforts, support By Christina Wilson USAG Bavaria Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Hohenfels honored 58 local volunteers at the 2021 Volunteer Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday, May 18. This annual event brings attention to the continuing efforts, and support, of all volunteers across the Hohenfels military community. Without volunteers, Hohenfels would not be able to provide all the services made accessible to the community during the COVID-19 restrictions. Volunteer of the Year Award Winner: Local National – Georg Weishaupt with Hohenfels Community Spouses Club Nominees: • Family Member – Stephanie Potter with Elementary School PTA • Family Member – Erin Walsh with Hohenfels Community and Spouses Club • Family Member – Jared Wiggins with FMWR Sports & Fitness U.S. Army photo
“Volunteers in our military community help to bridge the gap and vastly improve our daily lives,” said Michelle Turner, president of Hohenfels Community and Spouses’ Club. She said that reduced resources have decreased services in the community. “Volunteering is not always easy. It takes your time and your energy — mentally, emotionally, physically, and sometimes financially. I know this because I have volunteered in many different capacities over the years.”
From left, USAG Bavaria-Hohenfels Deupty Garrison Manager Patrick Rothbauer, volunteer nominee Erin Walsh, Volunteer of the Year Georg Weishaupt, USAG Bavaria Commander Col. Christopher Danbeck, JMRC Commander Col. Anthony Murtha and JMRC Command Sgt. Maj. Alexander Yazzie are present at Hohenfels’ 2021 Volunteer Recognition Ceremony on May 18.
When asking Hohenfels volunteers why they spend their time and effort volunteering with the community, many said that they feel connected, appreciated and can help others during hardship or separation from loved ones. Collectively, volunteers with the Hohenfels military community donated 54,216.81 total
hours in 2020. This saved the government approximately $1,474,697.23 last year. The Volunteer Management Information System is a tool, found at the Army Family Web Portal, to manage volunteer hours within the military community. If you would like to volunteer, register at

Surviving tick season: Tips for dressing properly, avoiding key areas Courtesy Story USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs During spring, ticks transform from larva to nymph with only one catch … the need for a blood meal. Typically, ticks live in brush close to the ground and engage in opportunistic feeding on small mammals, birds and sometimes, humans. Although most ticks are not infected with human diseases, some ticks can carry such diseases as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and viral diseases. The transmission of lyme disease peaks during the months of May to August, however, Jennifer Steele, U.S. European Command infectious disease subject matter expert, advised that ticks have been out since February this year. Disease transmission occurs during the nymph stage when ticks are the size of a poppy seed. Their incredibly small size allows delivery of a painless bite to feed. Feeding is required for at least 24 hours to transmit lyme disease to humans via infected saliva. Symptoms of lyme disease typically develop one to two weeks after infection. Early symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and depression. Late symptoms include arthritis, hand
pain, foot pain and swelling of the brain. These occur when patients fail to receive prompt antibiotic treatment. A characteristic bull’s-eye skin rash occurs in 80 percent of people. The easiest way to prevent tick bites is to avoid wooded areas, leaf litter, high grass, weeds and brush, however, since this is not always possible, here are some tips to avoid tick bites: • Use insect repellent on exposed skin • Wear protective clothing with long sleeves, long pants, a hat. Tuck pants into socks or boots. • Treat socks and pants with permethrin-containing insecticide. • Wear light-colored clothing for easy visualization of ticks Always inspect the entire body for ticks after outdoor activities and remove ticks immediately by pulling them straight out with tweezers. Ticks prefer soft skin and hairy areas. Conduct a self/buddy check behind ears and knees, hair line, underarms, and between fingers and toes. The Army Public Health Center (Provisional) provides a tick identification and testing service for DOD health clinics. This service is known as the DOD Human Tick Test Kit

It’s true to say that Munich is very prosperous and Germany’s fastest growing city – many corporations host their European headquarters here and no major fashion label is without a flagship store in this trendfocused city. Munich has a lot of attractions to offer for all ages and tastes. Discover art, architecture, history, modern technology, shopping, beer (of course!) and great food.
Parks Englischer Garten
The English Garden is one of Europe’s biggest city parks and is even larger than New York’s Central Park. In the beloved park, one can see locals and visitors walking, jogging, cycling, street musicians performing, children playing, students sprawling about and so much more. It consists of 910 acres and has mature oak and maple trees as well as meadows of lush grass. At the park you can find the Japan teahouse and Japanese garden which were created on a small island in celebration of the Summer Olympics in 1972. The teahouse was given as a gift to Bavaria by Japan. A traditional Japanese tea ceremony, celebrated by a Japanese tea master, is held regularly. Kleinhesseloher See, a beautiful lake located in the center of the park, provides a place to absorb nature. Near the lake is a beer garden to unwind and relax with a pils. Leave your modesty at home: many Münchners legally bask nude in the sun! Surfing can be found at the southern tip of the English Garden. Catch a wave

on the artificial surf produced by a water pumping mechanism. The surfers are such an attraction that they are included in tourist brochures. You will often find crowds of people leaning over a bridge cheering on surfers clad in wetsuits. According to the park director, surfing may soon be a thing of the past. Surfing and swimming is actually officially forbidden because of the raging torrent has dangerous current and undertows, but it seems the surf bums have yet to hang up their boards. Hofgarten The Court Garden is a garden located between the Residenz and the English Garden. Built as an Italian style Renaissance garden, it was commissioned by Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria in 1613-1617. Gorgeous fountains, radiant flowerbeds, lime trees, gravel paths and benches attract locals and tourists alike. After the destruction during WWII, the garden was rebuilt and partially redesigned into a compromised design between the landscaped character it had during the 19th century and the original 17th century design. The main attraction of the garden is the Temple of Diana, a pavilion that was designed in 1615 by Heinrich Schön the Elder. The pavilion has eight arches and from each arch radiates a footpath that divides the garden into eight individual sections. On top of the pavilion is a bronze statue called Tellus Bacarica. The statue is a symbol of the Bavarian land treasuresgrain, water and salt. Olympiapark The Olympiapark is located in north of the city where soldiers once paraded and where the world’s first Zeppelin landed in 1909. Constructed in 1972 for the Summer Olympics, the park serves as a venue for cultural, social and religious events. Olympiapark annually draws people to concerts, festivals and sporting events. The swimming hall and the iceskating rink on the same site are open to the public. It is advised to first stop by the InfoPavilion for information, maps, tour tickets and a model of the complex. Audio players can be rented for a self-guided tour. Tickets are available for a 90-minute guided Adventure Tour that covers the entire park by foot or on a toy train. The Olympiaturm (Olympia Tower) stands 291m and weighs 52,000 tons. At the tower is an observation platform where visitors can see the breathtaking backdrop of the Alps. The tower also offers a small rock & roll museum with
memorabilia including a guitar signed by Ozzy Osbourne, a poem penned by Jim Morrison, Britney Spears’ glitter jeans and more. Additionally, at the height of 182m is a revolving restaurant that seats 230.
Landmarks Schloss Nymphenburg Nymphenburg is a must-see if you get to Munich. This lavish palace sprawls around 5km northwest of the Altstadt. The Baroque palace served as the main summer residence of the rulers of Bavaria and the House of Wittelsbach. It’s noteworthy to mention that the head of the once royal Wittelsbach family, Franz Duke of Bavaria, still resides in an apartment on the premises today. There is an entry fee to enter the palace. Though only a few rooms are open to the public, it is worth the entrance price to see the Gallery of Beauties (Schönheitengalerie) containing 36 portraits of attractive female friends of the then King Ludwig. The most popular image is of beautiful Helene Sedlmayer, the daughter of a shoemaker, who is adorned with a lavishing gown given to her by the king. There is also a portrait of Ludwig’s alluring and notorious lover Lola Montez. The palace’s grounds are beautiful and have magnificent gardens. The gardens are an amazing place to relax as you will find benches and paths throughout. Marienplatz

Marienplatz, the heart of the Altstadt, is a central square that’s a popular gathering spot which bursts with personality. Marienplatz is named after the Mariensäule, a Marian column that was erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation. From the center visitors can explore many old and wonderful buildings, churches and landmarks. At certain times of the day (11 a.m. and 5 p.m. from March to October) millions of tourists annually cram into the square to see the animated Glockenspiel, a beautiful carillon over a 100 years old in the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall). The carillon is a neo-Gothic fantasy festooned with gargoyles, statues and a dragon scaling the

turrets. It has 43 bells and 32 figures that perform two actual historic events- the story of a knight’s tournament in 1568 and the story of the Schäfflertanz. Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall)
Altes Rathaus is located east of Marienplatz. Built between 1470 and 1480, the Gothic building has been known as the Town Hall and today represents the Munich city council. What is actually seen today is the third restoration of the building designed by Jörg von Halspach of Frauenkirche fame because of a lightning storm in 1460 and then WWII bombing. The Town Hall is the site where Joseph Goebbels in November 9, 1938 gave his hate-filled speech launching the nationwide Kristallnacht program. The interior of the building is known for its masterpiece of medieval design. It has a beautiful barrel-vaulted timber roof and gorgeous decorative beans and golden stars. Today a large collection of rare and precious toys from Europe and the U.S. are housed in the building’s Spielzeugmuseum. Fraunhofer Restaurant This wonderful Bavarian restaurant is one of the city center’s best places to discover regional Southern delectable classic dishes such as roast pork, roast aspic, toasted dumpling soup or pancakes. The menu also features various vegetarian dishes as well as Starnberg fish. Dating back to 1874, the décor is worthy for a visit alone with its lavish chandeliers, stucco ceilings, parquet floors and wall paneling. The restaurant has a cozy ambiance and attracts a wonderful mixture of people, from locals and tourists, to students and actors from the adjacent theater. Kultfabrik Near the Ostbahnhof as Kunstpark Ost, you will find Europe’s largest party zone. Kultfabrik has disco clubs, pubs, after-hour snack bars and several concert stages. The musical range includes house/ electro, latin, soul, hard rock and more. Kultfabrik also combines art exhibitions, artists’ workshop and antiques at

Making the most of Munich regular flea markets as well as children facilities. Heavens Gate (Europe’s largest climbing hall), Capoeira studio Dance’n’Fight and the skate park also offer sports and leisure activities at Kultfabrick. Hofbräuhaus Originally founded as the brewery to the old Royal Residence, Hofbräuhaus continues to be a Bavarian state government-owned brewery. Munich’s oldest beer halls were founded by Wilhelm V, the Duke of Bavaria in 1589. Brewed today are types of beer (ranging from wheat ales to lagers) using original recipes handed down by Wilhelm V. There was a sudden demand for Hofbräuhäuser in other parts of the world after WWII. Hofbräuhäuser can now be found in Italy, Sweden, South Korea, Shanghai, Dubai and various cities in the United States. Famous celebrities that brought home Hofbräuhaus clay mugs include Louis Armstrong, Mikhail Gorbachev and George H.W. Bush.
Museums BMW Welt & Museum
BMW Welt is a multi-functional customer experience and BMW exhibition facility that opened adjacent to Olympiapark in 2008. The Welt is linked via a bridge to the silver-bowl-shaped BMW Museum and BMW Headquarters. The Welt showcases current BMW cars, acts as a distribution center, and offers an event forum and conference center. Visitors can experience all facets of BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce Motor Cars. The BMW Museum (established in 1973) shows BMW’s technical development throughout the company’s history with more than 125 exhibits. The museum exhibits engines and turbines, aircraft, motorcycles and varies variations of vehicles. Guided tours (also in English) provide exciting insights into the inner life of the global brand and showcase the history of the corporation. The Junior Program offers children creative workshops, tours and insight into
topics of mobility, sustainability, safety, the environment, vehicle technology and design. Jüdische Museum
The Jewish Museum was built in 2004 and is run by the city. The museum provides an insight into Munich’s Jewish history, life and culture for all ages. The permanent exhibition introduces the diverse aspects of Jewish identity with careful selection of objects. There is a special focus on annual Jewish festivals and rites of passage as an integral part of Jewish identity. The museum is part of a complex (designed by architects Rena WandelHoefer and Wolfgang Lorch) consisting of three buildings- the museum, a learning center and a library. The museum is situated between the main synagogue and the Jewish Community Center which is home to the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria and houses a public elementary school, a kindergarten and a youth center as a community auditorium and a kosher restaurant. Residenzmuseum The former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs of the House of Wittelsbach is the largest city palace in Germany and is Munich’s most popular attraction. The buildings were first constructed in 1385. Visitors come from afar for its architecture, room decorations, and displays from the former royal collections. The complex of buildings has ten courtyards and has approximately 130 rooms with antique furniture, art, porcelain, and tapestries spanning through several eras (Renaissance Baroque, Rococo, and the neoclassical) The three main areas are the Königsbau, the Alte Residenz and the Festsaalbau. Königsbau building was built between 1825 -1835 commissioned by King Ludwig I. Königsbau consists of numerous suites of rooms, including the State Apartment of Ludwig I. The royal living rooms can be visited by appointment only. The original royal private apartments were destroyed during WWII. The Banqueting Hall Wing (Festsaalbau) built between 1832 and
1842 for King Ludwig I, served as the royal reception halls. Today Festsaalbau is the primary concert venues for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra as well as it houses the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Cuvilliés Theatre. It will take approximately a couple of hours to see everything at the museum. Free audio guided tours are available. The tours begin at the Grotto Courtyard (Grottenhof) with the Perseus Fountain (Perseusbrunnen). Deutsches Museum The Deutsches Museum is the world’s largest museum of science and technology with about 28,000 exhibited objects. It is located on an island in the Isar River that runs through the city. Visitors can see the first automobile, the first electric dynamo and the laboratory bench where the atom was first split. There are approximately 28,000 exhibited objects including sections on astronomy, mining, photography, printing and transportation. Pinakothek Museums West of the English Garden is an ensemble of three museums, each of them highlighting a different period in European art. The Alte Pinakothek is one of the oldest galleries in the world and houses some of the most famous collections of Old Master paintings. It is the home of over 800 masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the end of the Rococco. Works by Duerer, Rubens, and da Vinci can be seen. The New Pinakothek (Neue Pinakothek) focuses on the late 18th to the beginning of the 20th century European Art and is one of the most prominent museums of 19th century art in the world. There you can see works from Francisco de Goya, Thomas Gainsborough and others. The Pinakothek der Moderne is Germany’s largest museum for modern art and features art of the 20th century, including photography and video.
Churches Michaelskirche (St. Michael’s Church) St. Michael’s is a Jesuit church and is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. The early Baroque style building, was built by William V, Duke of Bavaria between 1583 and 1597 as a spiritual center for the Counter Reformation. The outside building is impressive and contains statues of Duke Wilhelm and
early rulers of the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty, cast in bronze in the form of a family tree. The interior represents the triumph of Catholicism during the Counter-Reformation and the church crypt contains the tombs of members of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Asamskirche (Asam’s Church) Asam was built by brothers Egid Quirin Asam and Cosmas Damian Asam in 17331746. The church is considered to be one the most important buildings of the main representatives of the southern German Late Baroque. Though built in a confined space, every inch of the inside wall has paintings, cherubs, gold leaf and stucco. The ceiling fresco illustrates the life of St. John Nepomuk to whom the church is dedicated. Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady)
Built between 1468 and 1488, Frauenkirche serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and seat of its Archbishop. The late Gothic style building was constructed from red brick and was designed very plainly, without rich Gothic ornaments. The church can hold approximately 20,000 people, which is among the largest hall churches in southern Germany. No other building in the central Munich stands taller than Frauenkirche. From April to October visitors can enjoy Munich’s panoramic cityscape and the breathtaking Bavarian Alps views from the south tower. A collection of 14th to 18th century artwork from artists Erasmus Grasser, Jan Polack and others adorns the interior of the cathedral. It is the burial place of members of the Wittelsbach dynasty including Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor (reg. 1294-1347) and others.
Getting to Munich Munich is easily reached by Deutsche Bahn and car. By car, it is 2.5 hours from Grafenwoehr, 1 hour 40 minutes from Hohenfels, 2.5 hours from Vilseck, and an hour from Garmisch.

Parkstein’s natural history draws visitors to learn about volcanoes, geology
Just northeast of the Grafenwoehr Training Area, the extinct volcano of Parkstein rises above a tranquil region that includes vast fields and dense forests.
By Christa Rolls USAG Bavaria Environmental Division Much of the region around Grafenwoehr has beautiful rolling hills, making way to quaint villages, vast agricultural fields and dense forests. Just northeast of the Grafenwoehr Training Area, however, is the extinct volcano of Parkstein, jutting out of the landscape and standing out among the smaller hills.
Parkstein sits close to a geological fault line, along with other now-extinct volcanos, such as Waldeck and Rauher Kulm. While lava and steam do not come out of these volcanoes as they did around 20 million years ago, the slabs of rock deep in the earth underneath continue to move at a slow pace, causing miniscule tremors. While these tremors may be too small to feel, Richter scales
can detect them at the lowest levels. Exploring around Parkstein yields a unique history, one worth visiting and learning more about. Starting at the Basalt Wall, see how different rocks in various geometric shapes form after a volcanic eruption. Follow the trail to the church at the top of Parkstein for a beautiful panoramic view of the region, and see the replicated remains of what was once a castle atop this hill.
After enjoying time outside, head over to the Parkstein Volcano Museum to learn more about volcanology and the town’s cultural history. Every hour there is a volcano simulation, with rumbling floors, steam and a Richter scale to see how gases in the air change as an eruption nears. Beware, this could be a little frightening for younger children as the simulation is quite intense. Entrance into the museum is 4 euro
for adults and 11 euro for families. The town of Parkstein has tours in both English and German, by appointment through the Parkstein Volcano Museum. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this iconic Bavarian village! For more cool adventures and hikes in the local area, join U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria’s Environmental Division for their monthly hike. Info announced on their Facebook page.
