Pack your bags: Out-process from Hohenfels with one checklist

Story and photo by Christina Wilson USAG Bavaria Public Affairs The U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria-Hohenfels community has centralized many of their program services in the last several years to simplify and expedite the clearing process. If you are one of the many people who will have an upcoming Permanent Change of Station, you have a lot on your mind and what you are most likely hoping for is a smooth PCS. The out-processing program is designed to assist service mem-

bers with much of their outprocessing needs. Among other things, the Central Processing Facility will: • Assist with out-processing requirements by providing a detailed list with all the agencies involved in the clearing process • Provide a timeline that will show the key dates to clear the garrison The out-processing program is mandatory for all military and civilian personnel, regardless of service branch or civilian affiliation

(applies to GS, NAF and Contractor employees). Anyone who worked in the Hohenfels military community and used local services should clear those services. Civilian personnel will contact their local human resources specialist or Civilian Personnel Office for out-processing requirements. The staff at the USAG Bavaria — Hohenfels Central Processing Facility in Bldg. 10 understand the concerns military members have when faced with relocating to another community. They know, for example, how frustrated people feel when they are handed multiple checklists, often having the

same office appear on more than one list. The CPF staff will guide the service members through the clearing process by issuing the outgoing personnel a set of out-processing papers detailing which agencies service members will need to clear and ensure the mandatory clearance of all agencies listed on the document. Local services that screen outgoing personnel include Army Community Service, MWR Library, Vehicle Registration, VAT and Bank Offices, Housing and the Central Issue Facility, to name just a few. The CPF will continue to work

closely with organizations to ensure that they are aware of their responsibilities regarding personnel departures. Questions or concerns? Ask our subject matter experts at the Human Resources Directorate in Bldg. 10, call DSN 522-1730/4164, CIV 09472-7081730/4164, or send an email to usarmy.bavaria.id-europe.list. hohenfels-mpd-mil@mail.mil. TAKE NOTE When can I pick up my clearance papers? You can pick up your clearance papers 12 working days before your final out date. Soldiers must be in duty uniform (no PTs) when picking up clearing papers and conducting outprocessing business, to include all appointments and walk-ins.

Things to know about mobile, internet contracts in Germany

What do I need to request my clearance papers? You need a flight Itinerary from SATO, your approved DA31 and a copy of your orders. I am not ARMY; do I still need clearing papers? Yes! If you were assigned to the Bavaria community, you need to out-process the community regardless of what service or unit you are assigned to. When I come in for my final out, how long will it take? It will take about 60 minutes. Your final out appointment includes processing through Finance. The staff will look over your clearance papers to make sure you have all the required signatures. If correctly accomplished, we will stamp the clearance papers “complete.” How long before I am leaving should I request my clearing papers? It is ideal that you come see the CPF as soon as you find out you are leaving. However, in order take full advantage of the “Pre Clear” process you need to come in at least 21 days before your departure date. Why do I need clearing papers? Army Policy dictates it. Also, the CPF is responsible for ensuring that Bavaria community members clear accountability areas such as Vehicle Registration, the VAT Office, and Housing properly. What do I do if I have a problem out-processing an agency? Soldiers will contact the Central Processing Facility immediately if there is a problem out-processing an agency. Do NOT wait for your final out appointment. Do not leave Vehicle Registration and Customs for the last two days or you may face travel delays. How does temporary lodging and temporary lodging allowance work when out-processing? Outgoing temporary lodging allowance is not authorized prior to clearance of quarters. USAG Bavaria allows out-going TLA for three days. Requests for more than three days must be approved by the Housing Chief. TLA is not payable for any day a member is on leave away from the vicinity of the Permanent Duty Station or while on permissive TDY, except when one or more dependents remain in the vicinity of the permanent duty station.

Story and photo by Sarah Diepold USAG Bavaria Public Affairs Here is what you need to know about mobile, home or internet contracts in your local area that could affect you when out-processing. As contracts often come with pages of conditions and laws are different in each country, it is necessary to read and understand the terms of contracts you sign. What is the duration of my contract term? The minimum contract term and the period of notice are always specified in your contract. Usually, you can also find them on the last page of your invoice under “important information about your contract periods.” Most German providers, like Telekom, usually offer contracts with a term of 24 months. After the minimum term is over, most contracts automatically extend by 12 months. TKS Telepost Kabel-Service Kaiserslautern is a Vodafone Company, which offers telecommunication services for military sponsors and does not have a minimum term. How long is the term of notice? It depends on your provider, but for German companies, the termination period is usually three months before the end of the minimum term. If you have a fixed line or internet connection with Telekom, you usually have to terminate one month prior to the end of the contract. For terminations of TKS conwww.Bavariannews.com

tracts, whether mobile, home or internet, you must provide onemonth notice. Whether you submit your termination on the first or last day of a month, the termination always becomes effective at the end of the following month. How do I terminate my contract? Terminations of telecommunication contracts with local providers can be submitted in writing, by email or by fax and must be submitted within the term of notice. If sent in writing, it is recommended to use registered mail with delivery receipt. The termination request for TKS can be submitted by the contract holder either by letter or email. You can also terminate your contract in person at a TKS store. The exact address of where to send your termination depends on the individual provider. Always have a look at terms and conditions, or at the provider’s online help page. What if I PCS or move abroad? According to Section 46 of the German Telecommunications Act, you have a special right of termination when moving abroad, such as when PCSing. Telekom has a three-month term of notice for mobile contracts, but will grant a term of notice of only six days for fixed line or internet connections. If your move abroad is permanent, you always need to submit the termination in writing. Telekom also needs one of the following documents: • De-registration certificate • Certificate by the employer • Military orders TKS still requires the one month

notice as specified above, but does not need any proof if you want to terminate your contract when leaving Germany. Terminations always become effective at the end of the following month. What if I continue to receive bills even though I terminated my contract? When terminating a contract, you have to consider the term of notice and the minimum term of the contract. German providers will still charge you for the rest of your minimum contract term after receiving the termination or at least for three more months if you are granted the special right of termination according to Section 46 of the German Telecommunications Act. If you have terminated your contract according to the term of notice and minimum term of the contract and still receive bills or even a debt collection notice, you can always ask your Legal Assistance Office for help. Contact information can be found at www.7atc.army.mil/SJA. If you are unsure about your contract conditions, contact your provider.

Pet owners: What you need to know

when PCS-ing out of

By Bavaria Branch Veterinary Services PCS-ing is incredibly stressful, which is only compounded by ensuring your children and pets have what they need prior to travel. Your on-post veterinary treatment facility is here to help you. It’s important to call us months

in advance with any questions so that we can help you iron out the kinks well before it’s time to PCS. In Grafenwoehr and Vilseck, dial DSN 476-2370, CIV 09662-832370. you PCS. This is not something you want to be scrambling to fix at the last minute. 2. Health certificate A health certificate is required to PCS — and to clear the VTF. It must be issued within 10 days of your arrival at your destination. This can be done on- or off-post. To get your health certificate issued by the Vilseck Veterinary Treatment Facility, you’ll need to call to schedule an appointment. Schedules for each month open on the 15th of the month prior (or the first business day following the 15th). Call as soon as you know your flight date — the earlier the better. You will not be able to clear the VTF before your pet’s health certificate is issued. An airline reservation for your pet is insufficient. This is because your pet is not guaranteed to be issued a health certificate just because you have scheduled the appointment. 3. Clear the VTF Other documents that are acceptable to clear the VTF are: (a) proof your animal is deceased, (b) transfer of ownership paperwork signed by yourself and the new owner of your pet, (c) proof your pet already returned to the U.S., such as the health certificate, and (d) a memorandum signed by your commander taking responsibility for any animals you are unable to take with you when you leave. Feel free to call the VTF if you have any questions about clearing procedures.

4. Specific OCONUS Requirements Certain OCONUS areas have more stringent import requirements, particularly in regard to rabies vaccination and may also require blood testing. If you get orders to certain rabies-free OCONUS locations — such as Hawaii, Guam, South Korea, or Japan — call the Vilseck VTF with any questions you have and we are happy to provide you with information pertaining to the importing and exporting of animals. However, the responsibility to meet all travel requirements is solely that of the owner. So be proactive. We are here to help. 5. Do your homework The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service pet travel website is a helpful tool. This site contains up-to-date information for traveling to or from the United States with animals and gives country- and state-specific guidance. This website can be found at www.aphis.usda.gov/ aphis/pet-travel. The veterinarian cannot sign anything designating your pet as an emotional support animal. ESA’s are like any other beloved pet at the vet, and we want to ensure they are healthy and vaccinated prior to travel, but we cannot sign airline documents requiring information other than medical care and vaccine history. By MilitaryInGermany.com Germany’s natural scenic beauty, its spectacular landscapes, historical sites, robust cuisine, and superb accommodation make the country a prime choice for family vacations. All of these appeal to travelers of different budgets, interests, and proclivities. Consider including these top 10 attractions in your itinerary.

1. Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria, the “Fairytale King,” in honour of his favourite composer, Richard Wagner, with many of the interiors of the rooms designed with Wagner’s opera characters in mind. Travel Tip: Remember to get the €2 Neuschwanstein Castle commemorative coin to bring back home.

2. Europa Park

Travel Tip: Discounted ticket packages are available and the entry fee is cheap. The adults can enjoy the Gladiator Stuntshow, the Varieté Show with acrobatics, dancing and magic illusions, and the Ice-Show.

3. Deutsche Märchen Strasse

Established in 1975, the German Fairy Tale Route, or Deutsche Märchen Strasse,

is 600 kilometres long and runs from central Germany’s Hanau to Bremen. Locations of where the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, creators of Grimm’s Fairytales, lived and worked are the route’s focus. You and your children can visit the homes of the Pied Piper, Sleeping Beauty, and the Bremen Town Musicians on the route. Travel Tip: Check out the events being held until the end of 2013 to celebrate the bicentennial of the Grimm Brothers’ first published work, “Children’s and Household Tales.”

7. Olympiapark

Designed in 1972 for the 20th Olympics held in Munich, Olympiapark’s different athletic areas – swimming pool, Olympic stadium, and ice skating rink, among others — are still being used, by tourists this time. Travel Tip: Adventurous children and adults can do the roof-climb, a tour on the Olympic Stadium’s rooftop covering.

4. Marienplatz Munich

Founded in 1158 by Henry the Lion, Marienplatz today has a promenade where visitors can stroll the time away marvelling at the New Town Hall’s Gothic façade or gawking at the 43 bells of the glockenspiel with a face depicting the wedding of Renata von Lothringen and Duke William V. Travel Tip: The glockenspiel’s performances – with life-sized figures atop a 260foot tower – are 15 minutes each and go on at 11 a.m., noon, and 5 p.m.

5. Chocolate Museum

Young and old alike can satisfy their sweet tooth in the Chocolate Museum of Cologne. Made of aluminium and glass, the museum is a showcase of chocolate’s 3,000-year-old history with exhibitions that range from its beginnings as “drink for the gods” in ancient

Aztec and Mayan cultures, to its pre-eminent status today as energy fuel disguised as candy. Travel Tip: You and your family can dip waffles provided by the museum into the chocolate fountain, which measures 10 feet in height, for a taste of the delicious chocolate. A selection of German chocolates is available at the shop inside the museum.

6. Hannover Zoo

Stroll around Hannover Zoo and experience torturous pathways, caves shrouded in mist, and a hanging bridge. See gazelles, antelopes, blue-necked ostriches, and zebras race together across 12,000 square metres of beautiful landscape. Travel Tip: The children can safely learn how animals are trained from the expert professional animal trainers at the zoo.

7. Nuremberg Christmas Market

Walk through the Nuremberg Christmas Market, which opens during the last week of November, amidst 180 stalls handcrafted from wood and festooned with fresh garlands, twinkling fairy lights, and white and red fabric. Travel Tip: Children will thoroughly enjoy the steam engine train and carousels.

8. Volkswagen Factory

The largest automobile plant in the world is that of the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, an hour’s ride from Berlin. This gigantic car museum has displays of the various Volkswagen cars throughout the years, driving courses for both adults and children, a hotel and a restaurant. Travel Tip: The children will be fascinated by the all-glass elevator that takes visitors to the top of Car Tower, with a height of 160 feet, as well as more than 800 Volkswagen cars in actual production.

4.

9. Haribo Gummy Bear Factory

Were you even aware that the gummy bear candy you ate as a child was made in Germany? Haribo’s gummy bears were manufactured in Bonn in 1920 and Haribo has since become the world’s largest producer of gummy sweets. While visitors to the current factory are not allowed, you and your family can visit the original Haribo factory just beside the factory store, which has an exhibit that chronicles the history of Haribo. Travel Trip: The gummy sweets are a whole lot cheaper than the ones sold in candy shops and food stores.

10. Senckenberg Naturmuseum

One of the biggest exhibitions of the largest dinosaur skeletons in Europe is at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum, or the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History in Frankfurt. Egyptian mummies and fossil amphibians are only some of the thousands of exhibits found at the museum. Travel Tip: The museum’s shop has miniature stuffed toy dinosaurs, a large selection of literature natural history topics, and the popular Senckenberg fan t-shirts (discounts may be requested when purchasing in bulk). A stay of two weeks in Germany with the proper travel insurance in a reasonably-priced accommodation can spell the difference between memorable and frustration. Quite frankly, a few days will not allow you to see the beauty, culture, attractions, entertainment, or taste and savor the food (sausages) and beverages (lager), of Germany. Maximize time with your family by making wise decisions on your itinerary. Choose accommodation that has proximity to museums and other places of history and culture, restaurants, travel insurance offices, churches, the cinemas, pharmacies, hospitals, and police stations.

By Thomas Warner MilitaryInGermany.com You’ve likely been to the Champs-ÉlysÊes in Paris or seen the cathedrals at Strasbourg and Cologne. You’ve surely been able to stand up close, beside Big Ben in London and all those were indeed fabulous trips for you and your family. But have you ever seen the world’s tallest cathedral spire or the looked through the world’s oldest piece of stained glass? Have you sought out some not-so-popular destinations during your stay here in Germany? Germany has so much to offer and many exciting things close to us get overshadowed by all the must-do touristy trips we end up taking during our time here. All of the spots listed below are easily accessible from autobahns, with many hotel and lodging opportunities, and not too costly to undertake. Have you ever been to Bamberg? It’s a small town close to Nuremberg where the long-preserved St. Michel’s (Michelsberg) Monastery is

currently undergoing revamping and improvements. Parts or all of the church are visible from the outside but entrance might not be available depending on work schedules. Tap into a smoked beer or other refreshment at one of the old town pubs and decide what else suits your fancy. Bamberg is also home to the often-overlooked Altenburg castle, several other free or inexpensive cultural buildings, and lots of baroque architecture that gives an old-world feel to the city. Bamberg is less than 60 kilometers from Nuremberg, the site of the post World War II criminal trials and makes for another destination while you are in the area. The Voelklinger Iron Works tour near Saarbruecken is time well spent. The compound gives a glimpse of what life was like as this region evolved away from an agrarian dependence and toward the Industrial Revolution. While there are similar sites that are older, the Voelklinger Works is surely the best-maintained because it was in operation until the 1980s.

The world’s oldest examples of stained glass date back to the 11th century and can be found inside the Augsburg Cathedral in southern Germany, just above Munich. These “Prophet Windowsâ€? are extraordinary and give the visitor a sense of time and place, considering all the people that have come and gone through those halls since medieval times. Also in Augsburg is the Fuggerei, a housing estate created by fabled Jakob the Rich and a community unto itself. For only â‚Ź4, you can tour the maze of apartments and other dwellings that became a centerpiece for affordable living while all properties around it routinely escalated in price. Afterwards, visit the Riegele craft beer

brewery. Family-owned for almost 200 years and with a history tracing even further back, Riegele is a place to relax and take inventory of locally created as well as select imported beers that are popular in the region. The Gothic-themed town of Regensburg is also within an hour of Nuremberg and rests peacefully on two sides of the Danube River. Many buildings and monuments in and around the city date back hundreds of years and the area has been given UNESCO Heritage status. The town is home to a university and the population is over 150,000. There is a homey, laid-back feel to this city and the ones adjacent to it. While in Regensburg, a memorable stopping point is the Historische Wurstkuchl. This is a sausage-themed restaurant that has been serving regional delicacies for nearly 900 years. Ask the counter person for a suggestion of a well-known meaty menu item and several senf (mustard) offerings are sure to pique your tastebuds. See OFF THE BEATEN PATH, Page 16

By MilitaryInGermany.com The ancient city of Nuremberg has a lot to offer visitors, including a rich history, castles, museums, great restaurants and a beautiful Christmas Market. It’s beautiful in the summer, but winter is also an ideal time to visit this wonderful city. Nuremberg belongs to the state of Bavaria, in the administrative region of Middle Franconia. Located 110 miles north of Munich, it is situated on the Pegnitz River and the Danube-RhineMain Canal. Nuremberg is the second largest city in Bavaria and the largest city in Franconia with more than a half a million people. History and the Nazi Era The first documented to mention of the city dates back to 1050 as a location of an Imperial castle. The city is remembered in history for its strong connection to the Holy Roman Empire; the general assembly and courts of the Roman Empire were held at the Nuremberg Castle. Between 1050 and 1571 Nuremberg increased in size and significance, and expanded drastically as a result of its position at the heart of vital trade routes. As HItler rose to power in Germany, Nuremberg became the Nazi Party’s site for its mammoth conventions known as the Nuremberg rallies. It was also the place where the Reichstag was ordered to pass laws that revoked citizenship for all Jews and others deemed inferior by Hitler. Throughout World War II, Nuremburg served as the Nazi’s military district headquarters (Wehrkreis XIII) where military tank engines, submarines and aircraft were also manufactured. As a result, Nuremberg was strategically and heavily bombed by Allied Forces between 1943 and 1945. On January 2, 1945, in fact, ninety percent of the medieval city was destroyed in just one hour by British and American air forces with 1,800 residents being killed. One month later approximately 6,000 residents were killed by additional air raids. The once heavily fortified city was captured in 1945 by a fierce battle between German soldiers and several U.S. Infantry Divisions. The Americans had to fight block by block and moved from one house to the other as they defeated the dwindling German resistance. This fierce street battle caused additional urban devastation to the already bombed and shelled buildings. Post-war, the city was restored amicably, including some of the medieval buildings. PAGE 10

offer beer gardens and they are wonderful spots to enjoy a cold drink in the sun.

The Nuremberg Trials The city is perhaps most synonymous with the post-war military tribunals that were held by Allied Forces in 1945-46. The basis was to prosecute a number of political, military and economic leaders of Nazi Germany who were accused of Crimes Against Peace, Planning & Initiating Wars of Aggression, War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity. Known as the Nuremberg Trials, these tribunals where the first of their kind and set a precedent for the establishment of a permanent International Criminal Court as well as influencing the development of international criminal law, namely the Geonocide Convention, the Universal Convention of Human Rights, the Nuremberg Principles (which codifies what constitutes a war crime) and the Geneva Convention. In all, 24 men were brought before an international group of judges to face justice at the Nuremberg Trials. The primary argument the defendants used was, “I was only following orders.” This phrase has been used in defending accused war criminals for centuries and has become known as “The Nuremberg Defense,” referring to any attempt to deflect personal responsibility for a crime onto institutions like an army or the state. Twelve of the accused were sentenced to death, seven received prison sentences (ranging from 10 years to life in prison), three were acquitted, and two were not charged. Sadly, many of the key architects of WWII and the Holocaust such as Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler and Joseph Göbbels all committed suicide and escaped justice before the indictments were signed.

Cuisine It is hard to be in Nuremberg and to miss its two main unique cuisines which are famous around the world. The first is the Nürnberger Bratwurst, the grilled thin and short sausage. Second is the Nürnberger Lebkuchen, the gingerbread that is mostly enjoyed during the Christmas holidays.

Night Life in Nuremberg Setting aside its difficult past during the Second World War, the modern city of Nuremburg is one of the best places to be for night in Europe and arguably the best in Germany. A couple of popular hot spots include Club Stereo, with its huge guest list, music and drinks, and Club Goija with its stylish contemporary interiors and one-of-akind atmosphere. If you have time, you can also pop into a number of fancy and well-known clubs in Nuremburg such as the Cafe and Bar Celona Finca, Karaoke Bar Hallertor, O Shea’s Irish Pub, Mata Hari Bar, Bar 77, mach1 and many others. During the summer most of these places also

Where to Eat There are numerous restaurants to enjoy local cuisine, German delicacies and international dishes of all kinds. You can start your culinary quest at the Goldenes Posthorn, which has served the city since 1498. Here you will find high-quality typical Franconian dishes such as sausages, pig knuckle and roast. The historical Bratwursthausle restaurant has its own butcher shop and cooks the famous little sausages on an open beech-wood grill. The Hutt’n is the perfect place for a candlelight dinner while enjoying traditional delectables such as sauerkraut salad (Krustenschaufele), dumplings, crackling and roast pork. Other favorites in the city are the Italian restaurant Bardolino, the American Boogie’s BBQ Smokehouse and the Chinese restaurant BaShu. Must See Places Nuremberg Castle should be your first stop when touring the city! It is made up of three sections: the Imperial castle, some buildings of the Burgraves of Nuremberg and the municipal building of the Imperial City. Along with the city walls, the Nuremberg Castle is considered to be one of Europe’s most formidable medieval fortifications. As the city where the Nazi party had such a strong presence, and where it was ultimately brought to justice, the Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitags-gelände or the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rallying Grounds is a museum located at the former Rallying Grounds. The permanent exhibition called Fascination and Terror (Faszination und Gewalt) provides an insight into Nazi Germany. It explores the causes of the Nazi regime, connections, aftermath and consequences, particularly in reference to the city of Nuremberg. The Kaiserburg Castle offers the chance to take a glimpse into the life of a Roman emperor during the Middle Ages. Here you can visit the imperial apartments in the main building where you will find paintings from

the 16th and 17th centuries, tapestries and furniture, the Romanesque double chapel, the Sinwellturm tower and an extensive collection of weapons and tools. To truly discover Nuremberg’s history, the Tucher Knight Games should not be missed. This large medieval fair is much more than knight tournaments. You can watch history come alive with entertainers dressed in costumes as traveling minstrels, witches, merchants, maidens and many other medieval characters. Founded in 1852, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum has the largest collection of items relating to German culture and art spanning from prehistoric times to present day. This museum is Germany’s largest culture museum and has more than 1.2 million items. Here you will be able to see the Cloth of St. Gereon, the oldest existing European tapestry that dates back to the early 11th century. Schöner Brunnen is a beautiful fountain dating back to the 14th century. Located in the city’s main market next to the town hall, it is one of the main attractions in the historical area. Try your chance at some luck! It is believed that spinning the Nuremberg Ring that is welded on the fountain’s iron fence will bring good luck. Each Christmas season, more than two million visitors from around the world attend the Nuremberg Christmas Market, which is held in the Hauptmarkt square located in the historic district. Visitors can absorb the medieval charm and sample the festive delights of gingerbread, Glühwein and roasted macaroons. More than 200 stalls offer a vast array of items including traditional wares such as gingerbread, fruit loaves, bakery goods as well as Christmas articles such as Christmas tree angels, Christmas tree ornaments, candles, toys and much more. This year’s market will take place from November 28 to December 24. It will be open daily from 10am9pm except on Christmas Eve (10am-2pm). A visit to the city of Nuremberg is a walk into a tourist’s paradise. This once ancient Roman city has a lot to offer including a rich history, castles, museums, many restaurants serving up Nuremberg and international cuisines, one of the largest Christmas Market and so much more. How to Get there By car, Nuremberg is approximately three hours east of Kaiserslautern, just under 2 hours and 30 minutes east of Wiesbaden and just over 2 hours northeast of Stuttgart. Making the most of Munich

By MilitaryInGermany.com

Munich, or München to use its German name, is the capital and largest city of the German state of Bavaria, which also happens to be the biggest state in Germany. No stay in Germany is complete without at least a weekend exploring this worldrenowned city on the edge of the Alps. Munich is a beautiful green city that offers plenty of parks and open spaces, but its wealth and opulence is perhaps what is most noticeable upon arrival. It’s true to say that Munich is very prosperous and Germany’s fastest growing city – many corporations host their European headquarters here and no major fashion label is without a flagship store in this trendfocused city. Munich has attractions to offer for all ages and tastes. Discover art, architecture, history, modern technology, shopping, beer (of course!) and great food. Use our guide to discover the top sights that you should visit while in Munich.

Parks

Englischer Garten The English Garden is one of Europe’s biggest city parks and is even larger than New York’s Central Park. In the beloved park, one can see locals and visitors walking, jogging, cycling, street musicians performing, children playing, students sprawling about and so much more. It consists of 910 acres and has mature oak and maple trees as well as meadows of lush grass.

At the park you can find the Japan teahouse and Japanese garden which were created on a small island in celebration of the Summer Olympics in 1972. The teahouse was given as a gift to Bavaria by Japan. Celebrated by a Japanese tea master, a traditional Japanese tea ceremony is held regularly. Kleinhesseloher See, a beautiful lake located in the center of the park, provides a place to absorb nature. Near the lake is a beer garden to unwind and relax with a pils. Leave your modesty home as many Münchners legally bask nude in the sun! Surfing can be found at the southern tip of the English Garden. Catch a wave on the artificial surf produced by a water pumping mechanism. The surfers are PAGE 12

such an attraction that they are included in tourist brochures. You will often find crowds of people leaning over a bridge cheering on surfers clad in wetsuits. According to the park director, surfing may soon be a thing of the past. Surfing and swimming are actually officially forbidden because the raging torrent has dangerous current and undertows, but it seems the surf bums have yet to hang up their boards.

Hofgarten The Court Garden is a garden located between the Residenz and the English Garden. Built as an Italian-style Renaissance garden, it was commissioned by Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria in 1613-1617. Gorgeous fountains, radiant flowerbeds, lime trees, gravel paths and benches attract locals and tourists alike. After the destruction during WWII, the garden was rebuilt and partially redesigned into a compromised design between the landscaped character it had during the 19th century and the original 17th century design. The main attraction of the garden is the Temple of Diana, a pavilion that was designed in 1615 by Heinrich Schön the Elder. The pavilion has eight arches and from each arch radiates a footpath that divides the garden into eight individual sections. On top of the pavilion is a bronze statue called Tellus Bacarica. The statue is a symbol of the Bavarian land treasuresgrain, water and salt. Olympiapark The Olympiapark is located in north of the city where soldiers once paraded and where the world’s first Zeppelin landed in 1909. Constructed in 1972 for the Summer Olympics, the park serves as a venue for cultural, social and religious events. Olympiapark annually draws people to concerts, festivals and sporting events. The swimming hall and the iceskating rink on the same site are open to the public. It is advised to first stop by the InfoPavilion for information, maps, tour tickets and a model of the complex. MP3 players can be rented for a self-guided audio tour. Tickets are available for a 90-minute guided Adventure Tour that covers the entire park by foot or on a toy train.

The Olympiaturm (Olympia Tower) stands 291m and weighs 52,000 tonnes. At the tower is an observation platform where visitors can see the breathtaking backdrop of the Alps. Also at the tower is a small rock & roll museum with memorabilia including a guitar signed by Ozzy Osbourne, a poem penned by Jim Morrison, Britney Spears’ glitter jeans and more. Additionally at the height of 182m is a revolving restaurant that seats 230 people.

Landmarks

Schloss Nymphenburg Nymphenburg is a must-see if you get to Munich. This lavishing palace sprawls around 5km northwest of the Altstadt. The Baroque palace served as the main summer residence of the rulers of Bavaria and the House of Wittelsbach. It’s noteworthy to mention that the head of the once royal Wittelsbach family, Franz Duke of Bavaria, still resides in an apartment on the premises today.

5 p.m. from March to October) millions of tourists annually cram into the square to see the animated Glockenspiel, a beautiful carillon over 100 years old in the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall). The carillon is a neo-Gothic fantasy festooned with gargoyles, statues and a dragon scaling the turrets. It has 43 bells and 32 figures that perform two actual historic events — the story of a knight’s tournament in 1568 and the story of the Schäfflertanz.

Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) Altes Rathaus is located east of Marienplatz. Built between 1470 and 1480, the Gothic building has been known as the Town Hall and today represents the Munich city council. What is actually seen today is the third restoration of the building designed by Jörg von Halspach of Frauenkirche fame because of a lightning storm in 1460 and then WWII bombing. The Town Hall is the site where Joseph Goebbels in November 9, 1938 gave his hate-filled speech launching the nationwide Kristallnacht program. The interior of the building is known for its masterpiece of medieval design. It has beautiful barrel-vaulted timber roof and gorgeous decorative beams and golden stars. Today a large collection of rare and precious toys from Europe and the U.S. are housed in the building’s Spielzeugmuseum.

There is an entry fee to enter the palace. Though only a few rooms are open to the public, it is worth the entrance price to see the Gallery of Beauties (Schönheitengalerie) containing 36 portraits of attractive female friends of the then King Ludwig. The most popular image is of beautiful Helene Sedlmayer, the daughter of a shoemaker, who is adorned with a lavishing gown given to her by the king. There is also a portrait of Ludwig’s alluring and notorious lover Lola Montez. The palace’s grounds are beautiful and have magnificent gardens in the rear. The gardens are an amazing place to relax as you will find benches and paths throughout. Additionally, there are several buildings in the palace gardens. Marienplatz Marienplatz, the heart of the Altstadt, is a central square that’s a popular gathering spot which bursts with a lot of personality. Marienplatz is named after the Mariensäule, a Marian column that was erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation. From the center visitors can explore many old and wonderful buildings, churches and landmarks. At certain times of the day (11 a.m. and

The Jewish Museum was built in 2004 and is run by the city. The museum provides an insight into Munich’s Jewish history, life and culture for all ages. The permanent exhibition introduces the diverse aspects of Jewish identity with a careful selection of objects. There is a special focus on annual Jewish festivals and rites of passage as an integral part of Jewish identity. The museum is part of a complex (designed by architects Rena WandelHoefer and Wolfgang Lorch) consisting of three buildings — the museum, a learning center and a library. The museum is situated between the main synagogue and the Jewish Community Center which is home to the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, and houses a public elementary school, kindergarten, youth center, community auditorium and a kosher restaurant. Residenzmuseum The former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs of the House of Wittelsbach is the largest city palace in Germany and is Munich’s most popular attraction. The royal living rooms are preserved and can be visited by appointment only. The original

Pinakothek Museums West of the English Garden is an ensemble of three museums, each of them highlighting a different period in European art. The Alte Pinakothek is one of the oldest galleries in the world and houses some of the most famous collections of Old Master paintings. It is the home of over 800 masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the end of the Rococco. Works by Albrecht Duerer, Peter Paul Rubens, and Leonardo da Vinci can be seen. Churches

Michaelskirche (St. Michael’s Church) St. Michael’s is a Jesuit church and is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. The early Baroque-style building was built by William V, Duke of Bavaria between 1583 and 1597 as a spiritual center for the Counter Reformation. The outside building is impressive and contains statues of Duke Wilhelm and early rulers of the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty, cast in bronze in the form of a family tree. The interior represents the triumph of Catholicism during the Counter-Reformation and the church crypt contains the tombs of members of the Wittelsbach dynasty.

Asamskirche (Asam’s Church) Asam was built by brothers Egid Quirin Asam and Cosmas Damian Asam in 17331746. The church is considered to be one the most important buildings of the main representatives of the southern German Late Baroque. Though built in a confined space, every inch of the inside wall has paintings, cherubs, gold leaf and stucco. Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) Built between 1468 and 1488, Frauenkirche serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and seat of its Archbishop. The late Gothicstyle building was constructed from red brick and was designed very plainly, without rich Gothic ornaments. The church can hold approximately 20,000 people, which is among the largest hall churches in southern Germany. No other building in central Munich stands taller than Frauenkirche. From April to October visitors can enjoy Munich’s panoramic cityscape and the breathtaking Bavarian Alps views from the south tower. Garmisch-Partenkirchen

— an alpine adventure

By Michelle Purse MilitaryInGermany.com Located in the heart of the Bavarian State, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the must-see destinations that should be on your itinerary while based in Germany. The town has a long history of association with the American Military (the Marshall Center and Edelweiß Lodge are both based there), which means you can expect a very warm Bavarian welcome when you visit.

History

For hundreds of years, the town of Garmisch was fundamentally separate from the town of Partenkirchen. Essentially, Partenkirchen evolved from Partanum, a Roman town lying on the Venice-Augsburg trade route with its first mention in history around 15 A.D. In fact, the main street of Partenkirchen, Ludwigsstrasse, follows the original road created by Romans. About 800 years later, Garmisch came into the picture as the German District or Germaneskau, indicating that the Teutonic tribe might have settled towards the valley’s west, but it’s not until the 20th Century that the two separate towns would be connected as one. The discovery of the New World, or the Americas, just before the 16th century meant that shipping rose to prominence and overland trade suffered a sharp decline. For Garmisch and neighboring Partenkirchen, the region was plunged into hundreds of years of economic depression as much as the floor of the valley was hard to farm due to being swampy. Lynxes, wolves and bears

were constantly threatening livestock and the region was plagued with periodic epidemics such as bubonic plague. As the fortunes of the area were affected by crop failure and disease, witch hunting grew out of the ensuing misery and notable witch hunts, trials and barbaric executions followed between 1589 and 1596. In fact, 10 percent of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen population at the time or 63 people to be precise, were either garroted or burned alive. A gruesome history indeed!

The Winter Olympics of 1936 Both Garmisch and Partenkirchen remained very separate right until the time when Adolf Hitler entered the scene and forced the mayors of the regions in 1935 to combine their two respective markets in anticipation of the forthcoming Winter Olympic games of 1936. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is famously remembered for hosting the Winter Olympic Games of 1936 where for the first time in history, alpine skiing was featured. Today, lots of alpine and Nordic world cup ski tournaments are held in the region, mostly on the Kandahar Olympic run situated on the Alpspitze mountain. Every New Year’s Day in Garmisch-Partenkirchen there is a ski jump competition within the Four Hills Tournament. It goes without saying that over the years Garmisch-Partenkirchen has always been favored as the top holiday spot in Germany when it comes to hiking, snowboarding and skiing as a result of the region’s great

skiing areas, especially the Zugspitze and the Classic Area (Hausberg and Alpspitze Mountains).

Zugspitze

At 2,962 meters, the Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain and reaching the top requires the use of a number of lifts or the funicular railway. The border with Austria runs right across the peak and it is possible to go up from Germany, and descend using another cable car to end up in a nearby town across the border in Austria. To enjoy the visit to the top, plan to do it on a clear day otherwise you could end up with zero visibility. The skiing on Zugpsitze is fantastic on a good day and there are very few queues for the lifts. There are two blue learning slopes but no nursery slopes so it’s best to be able to do some basic snow plowing before heading up the mountain. Zugspitze is a glacier which means you can ski on it quite early until fairly late in the season, but it is equally beautiful to visit during the summer too. There are a number of summer hiking trails that lead to the top (the last part is actually a more like a technical climb so many people take a short cable car for this bit). To enjoy the thrill of going up the tall-

est peak in German, prepare for a two day hike to reach the summit. There are basic lodgings and food on a number of trails but it is important to book in advance and bring your own camping gear. Climbing and hiking this summit is an attraction that draws tourists from around the world to Zugspitze.

Classic Area

For those who intend to visit GarmischPartenkirchen to learn to ski, head to Hausberg and Alpspitze, which combined make up the Classic Area ski-pass. Hausberg is the lowest point in the area and a superb destination for anyone just starting to ski, but it does get quite busy, especially at weekends. For more advanced skiers you can actually start at the Alpspitze mountain and discover all the runs there before skiing across to Hausberg to join your friends in the afternoon for a rewarding mug of steaming hot glühwein (but be aware that you can’t ski back).

There are some fantastic walking trails over this area (and beyond) in the summer as well as some pretty awesome mountainbike trails for adrenaline junkies!

Accommodation

Garmisch-Partenkirchen has no shortage of high-quality hotels and self-catering apartments to suit every budget and the entire town is very used to English-speaking American guests. Of course you can book into the military’s own facility Edelweiß Lodge, where you will be able to book ski lessons, rent ski clothes and use all the facilities. But to get the best out of Garmisch-Partenkirchen we say get off base and be like a local. An excellent family-run guest house and spa is the Forsthaus Graseck, situated just above the ski jump and ice stadium, nestled in a mountaintop destination and accessed only by it’s very own ancient cable car (unless you have have a 4×4 vehicle). Aside

from a warm welcome, wonderful local cuisine, open fires and very comfortable accommodation, they also offer torchlit tours of the Partnenachklamm (gorge) which is situated at the foot of the hotel and is a magical way to spend the evening.

in advance. For a really magical entrance you could book a pony and cart to take your group on a little tour of the town before dropping you off at the restaurant.

Restaurants

There are lots of places to be in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at night and due to the large number of Americans that are often here during the winter you can be sure of a great party atmosphere. The Underground bar stays open late or pop into the Irish Pub where there is live music on most nights. Garmisch-Partenkirchen has something for everyone. It’s a traditional old Bavarian town that offers modern winter sports facilities and lots of outdoor activities in the summer. It’s very close to Munich, Neuschwanstein and Schwanau Castles as well as Dachau Concentration Camp, so you can tick a lot of must-sees off your list on your way there and back too.

The Eibsee Pavilion at the foot of Zugspitze (out of town in Grainau) is a spectacular way to enjoy lunch in a lovely place with a Biergarten and restaurant section outdoors. For a really traditional Bavarian night out in Partenkirchen town center, book into Gasthof-Fraundorfer. There you will discover delicious Bavarian cuisine, traditional singing, yodelling and alpine dancing in a bustling family-run restaurant that has been hosting guests from far and wide since 1857. It’s very busy and service can be a little brusque, but it’s well worth it for the experience and the food, but you must book

OFF THE BEATEN PATH from Page 9 Also, check out Neupfarrplatz — an underground discovery point boasting exhibits from Roman artifacts to war bunker hideaways. Visitors who make the stop at Voelklingen might continue westward across the border to Metz, France. Aside from the well-documented St. Stephen cathedral and another antiquated religious building, St. Pierre aux Nonnains, flea markets, small wineries, bistros and pubs, and a few childrenthemed places to let the kids blow off steam are scattered throughout the town. The Porte Des Allemands is a 13th-century, twin-towered structure that once stood in the path of invading forces in the region. It features a walking area that winds through the building and several shops and restaurants are situated nearby. Just blocks from the towers is Eglise St. Maximin, one of several churches and noteworthy for its blue-hued, modern stained glass

that was installed under the direction of its creator, 1960s artist Jean Cocteau. Castle ruins in Homburg, just a 30-minute drive along A6 from Kaiserslautern toward Saarbruecken, are the best you might have seen, with drawings and plans that show exact layout and floorplans of what used to be there. There are caves that served various purposes located underneath the castle complex. Dress warm for the caves are at pretty much a constant cool temperature for exploring in any season and they can give the visitor an idea of ways of life from another time period. There is a fun and spacious park close to downtown with an extremely shallow pond that has a children’s pirate ship at its center. Children can get on tiny boats and use poles to push themselves out to examine the ship. The park also has a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, and large, open fields for volleyball, and other outdoor or ball games. Teenagers and younger kids alike will find this place appealing. Northeast of Kaiserslautern is the

Rhine River town of Mainz. It is here that you simply must come before your time is up, for a visit to both the Gutenburg Museum and to trace Martin Luther’s path to reforming religion that still reverberates today. Continue south for 30 minutes and see Worms, where Luther appeared in front of Roman emperor Charles V in high court: this might inspire you to seek out more Luther-related spots in German towns north of Frankfurt. Downtown Worms has a walking tour that traces some of Luther’s steps. The city also has castle ruins that are different from castles on the Rhine River hills, as they are set right in the middle of downtown. There is a convenient parking garage with inexpensive day rates plus many restaurants and shops. Altstadt is the old town portion of Mainz and a place to find authentic servings of sausage and beer, varying representations of medieval architecture, and lots of walking space for shops, pubs, coffee houses and photo opportunities. A day in Mainz

is not enough and it’s probably worth your while to book a room somewhere and stretch the experience. The printing press and ancient Bible memorabilia take time to get a handle on, so plan
