With tax center services limited, USAG Bavaria provides other options USAG Bavaria Public Affairs U.S. Army Europe and Africa will not offer face-to-face tax preparation and filing services this year, due to fiscal constraints and manning shortages. But there are free online services available to active-duty service members; alternatively, service members may choose to hire a commercial preparer to file their taxes. Regardless of the method, individuals remain responsible for filing a complete and accurate return. So here’s what you should know:
What you need to know about this tax year The tax filing season began Jan. 24, and for most taxpayers the deadline is April 18, 2022. U.S. citizens living abroad are granted an automatic two-month extension. The extended deadline is June 15, 2022. As a reminder, do not forget that you must attach a statement to your return when you submit it — explaining why you qualify for the extension.

USAG BAVARIA DOUBLES DOWN ON WATER, ENERGY CONSERVATION by Julian Temblador USAG Bavaria Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria pivoted into 2022 with a more dedicated focus on energy and water conservation around its installations. This shift in priority comes after Army Materiel Command hosted its first-ever Energy and Utilities Summit on Dec. 15-16, 2021, at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. During the summit, Gen. Edward Daly, commanding general of AMC, stated, “The operationalization of energy at installations is absolutely critical. We have to have resilient, hardened and modernized installations to project power and protect our force.” At USAG Bavaria, energy manager Paul Hlawatsch is committed to expanding conservation efforts and improving the durability of the water and energy supply across all four installations. “We’ve been increasing our measures to reduce the energy and water consumption and implementing renewable energy technology across USAG Bavaria long before this new focus from AMC,” Hlawatsch said. “Now, we are able to double down on making the installations more energy-efficient, work towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensure our resources here are enduring.”

PAGE 4
In 2020, USAG Bavaria received the Secretary of the Army Energy and Water Management Award for installing two combined heat and power plant units at the Hohenfels installation — which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 2,640 metric tons per year and saves over $1.2 million annually. In addition to the newly installed power units, USAG Bavaria recently replaced over 1,800 streetlights and 36,000 lighting tubes across the footprint with energy-efficient LED lights. To minimize the amount of unnecessary lighting in administrative offices among the four installations, motion/infrared sensors were installed. And the new housing units on Rose Barracks were built with state-of-the-art cooling and heating technology, solar panels and STAR-rated appliances to reduce energy consumption. But energy conservation on USAG Bavaria does not stop there. To meet the expectations laid out in President Biden’s Executive Order 14057, The Federal Sustainability Plan, USAG Bavaria aspires to trade its non-tactical fleet of gas-powered automobiles to electric-powered vehicles by 2035. Hlawatsch and the USAG Bavaria Directorate of Public Works are already working to prepare the framework to support the incoming fleet of electric vehicles. “We have installed roughly 75,000 square feet of roof-mounted solar panels,” Hlawatsch stated. “And we are already working with energy contractors to establish electric vehicle charging stations on our facilities.” Going forward, USAG Bavaria will continue to have a significant focus on conserving energy and water.

USAG BAVARIA FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE GERMAN FAMILY

“We train e w together, her et work tog t gh and we fi ...” together,
U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria firefighters rescued three local Germans from an off-post family house fire on Thursday, Jan. 20, along Alte Amberger Strasse in Grafenwoehr. It was a shocking surprise for the residents of a multi-story house in Grafenwoehr, when massive amounts of smoke flooded the apartments at around 7:45 a.m. One person from one household escaped via the regular stairs, while three people from another household remained trapped after escaping to the secondstory balcony. Alexander Richter, who both works for the USAG Bavaria Fire Department and is the fire chief of the Grafenwoehr voluntary fire department, reacted quickly and requested additional support from the garrison fire department – through the Host Nation Emergency Dispatch Center – as soon as he received information that people were in danger. Within the immediate area, both the garrison fire department and the Eschenbach volunteer fire department own ladder trucks. Even though this emergency occurred off-post, the proximity of the USAG Bavaria Fire Department allowed firefighters to respond immediately and make a quick deployment to the scene. So just minutes later, the garrison’s fire department arrived with the turntable aerial ladder truck and another fire truck to work handin-hand with the other host nation fire departments. While garrison
firefighters took care to rescue the trapped residents, others put on respiratory protective devices to locate the source of fire and other possible residents. According to Tobias Zwicker, USAG Bavaria Assistant Fire Chief, the fire was caused at the heating system in the basement; moreover, host nation firefighters quickly neutralized it. Luckily it was determined that nobody else was in the smoke-filled house. After all four residents and a police officer from the inspection unit in Eschenbach were examined by the emergency doctors for smoke inhalation, officials said they were unharmed. Werner Stopfer, head of the Eschenbach Police Station, estimate that damages totaled around 120,000 euros. “Despite the uncertain and maybe risky situation at the beginning, this mission ended successfully and no one has been injured,” said Zwicker. “Training together – with the off-post volunteer fire departments – pays off in a situation like this.” The USAG Bavaria Fire Department has official partnerships with multiple local fire departments neighboring installations in Grafenwoehr, Vilseck and Hohenfels. “We train together, we work together and we fight together, onand off-post,” said USAG Bavaria Fire Chief Josef Rodler. “The teamwork and relationship is excellent.”

U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Soldiers, who are transitioning from the military into the civilian workforce, may be granted up to $1,500 towards the U.S. Army’s Career Skills Program. This support was made newly possible as of December 2021, when Army Emergency Relief allocated $3 million in grants to aid Soldiers approved for the CSP, worldwide. During a Soldier’s last 180 days of service, the CSP affords retiring and separating Soldiers the opportunity to gain skills training to improve their civilian employment options — resulting in a “high probability of employment in high-demand and highly skilled jobs,” according to AER. This training is largely offered in the form of apprenticeships, internships, on-the-job training and shadowing with an approved civilian employer. Transitioning Soldiers currently stationed at USAG Bavaria may qualify for a grant up to $1,500, because they will need to travel from outside the continental United States to participate in a CONUS CSP. Once funds are approved, AER Assistance may cover costs related to OCONUS CSP as follows:

USO Grafenwoehr reopened its doors with a brand new look on Feb. 4, just in time to celebrate the USO’s 81st birthday. In cooperation with U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria leadership, the Directorate of Public Works, tenant units and local contractors, USO Grafenwoehr worked tirelessly to remodel its new home on Tower Barracks. During the opening ceremony, USO Area 4 Director Carly Harris detailed the long journey USO Grafenwoehr undertook to get to this point. In October 2019, an underground pipe burst beneath USO Grafenwoehr — wreaking havoc and causing the organization to shut down temporarily and lose a large portion of its operating space. Since then, the organization worked tenaciously to remodel and upgrade its facilities, while also maintaining the ability to provide services to the community. “Since that day, we have worked very closely with USAG Bavaria leadership and DPW to lay out the planning for this beautiful center that you see today,” Harris said. “This is the best birthday present the USO could have. We are so grateful!” USO Grafenwoehr celebrated the USO’s 81st birthday and the ‘respawn’ of the organization’s facilities on Feb. 4. In attendance were Gen. Joseph Hilbert, commanding general of the 7th Army Training Command, and Col. Christopher Danbeck, garrison commander for USAG Bavaria. “Thank you for what you do for the community, every day,” Danbeck said. “We are so happy that our community members can now have the full USO Grafenwoehr experience.” Hilbert also shared remarks during the ceremony, reflecting on 81 years of USO history. He shared a memory from his childhood explaining how his grandfather, a Marine that served in WWII, had photographs from a USO event in Hawaii before he deployed in 1943.

When I needed a break, that’s where I would go to hang out.” Hilbert said. “I’m certain that all of you out there have your own USO stories, either from your family’s history or your own personal experience… To the USO team that’s here, thanks very much. To be a home away from home for Soldiers — that’s what the USO has done for the past 81 years.” Danbeck and Hilbert were joined by USO Grafenwoehr Center Manager Gabe Foist and Pfc. Axel Sandoval, a small arms artillery repairman with Bravo Company, 553rd Division Sustainment Support Battalion, who is on a rotation from Fort Hood, Texas, to cut
the cake in celebration of USO’s 81st birthday. USO Grafenwoehr’s newly remodeled facility features a movie room, a gaming room (with four PlayStation 5s), a ping-pong table, a pool table, the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program and a children’s area. Additionally, readily available are snacks, drinks and food, multiple TVs, computers, chairs, tables and booths to relax in. This location will also serve as the region’s gaming hub, where service members can participate in online gaming events. Some fees for MWR services set to rise April 1 by Mark Heeter IMCOM-Europe Public Affairs The fees for five Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs and services in IMCOMEurope will increase beginning April 1, to offset years of rising costs of maintaining them without price increases for the customers. “Fees for some MWR services have not been adjusted over five to seven years while many costs related to provide our services have increased,” said Jeff Wertz, IMCOM-Europe Assistant Chief of Staff for Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “After many years of keeping prices at a very low level, we have reached a point where we must
PAGE 10
adjust our fees to retain the ability to provide quality services to our members,” Wertz said. In Germany, the cost of a Value Added Tax (VAT) form will rise from $5 to $7 for purchases under $2,500, and from $65 to $90 for purchases over $2,500, respectively. Also, the hunting course fee in Germany will increase from $200 to $250. The established VAT program processes and fees in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy will not change, as they are guided by different Status of Forces Agreements and in some cases offered by the Host Nation. As the proponent for the VAT and Outdoor Recreation hunting programs across military installations in Germany, these
new fees will also take effect at Air Force installations, according to Rafael Wunsch, business consultant with IMCOM-Europe, who oversees the VAT and hunting fees. “The VAT program is one of the most popular and widely used MWR services, and we have not raised the price of these forms in eight years,” Wertz said. In a typical year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, IMCOMEurope garrisons issued roughly 300,000 VAT forms, used for an average savings of €57 on the average purchase price of €300, according to Wunsch. Additionally, for the larger scale purchases of €2500 and more, the average purchase price ranges from €12,000 to €25,000,

resulting in significant savings to the individual €2,280 to €4,750 in tax avoidance, he added. “Many local stores even permit collecting or combining of receipts within one month, resulting in even greater savings to an individual at a very small cost,” he said. The minimum fees for three additional programs across IMCOM-E will also increase: storage units, car washes and Auto Skills Center bays. “We conducted extensive analysis of the off-post markets for these services to ensure the increases are fair and reasonable,” said Steve Pelletier, recreation program manager for IMCOM-Europe.
“The (Auto Skills) bay fees were standardized in 2019, but the storage fees have never been standardized,” Pelletier said. Some car wash facilities have continued to charge $3 for a basic wash, while comparable off-post car washes charge approximately €10, according to Pelletier. Despite fee increases, MWR will still provide desired services at approximately 25 percent lower cost compared to services in local communities, according to Wunsch. The adjusted prices will take effect as of April 1, and prices for existing storage unit contracts will remain in effect for the duration of the existing contract or the end of 2022, whichever comes sooner.

USAG Bavaria recognizes S 3/5 employee for excellent service to the Garmisch community by Andrea Griesser USAG Bavaria Public Affairs The U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Garmisch community recognized Harold A. Zarecki for his excellent service to the local military community. In a small ceremony on Feb. 10, Zarecki was presented the Army Professional of the Year - Level II award for 2021 by Michael Daniels, deputy to the commander for USAG Bavaria. our closest Medical Treatment Facility is over 3 hours away in Hohenfels.” Zarecki started right at the edge of the 2020 holiday season. Shortly after the new year, he quickly oversaw COVID-19 operations, in addition to his regular duties. As the single liaison between the local U.S. medical personnel and the German health authorities, Zarecki developed new, unique and tailored protocols and safety measurements. His tireless efforts and many extra hours of work were vital to the organization’s success during the past two years, especially while the pandemic made life harder for all community members in Garmisch. “Sonny’s dedication to the mission, his commitment to our community, and his exceptional ability to communicate with both our U.S. personnel and also the local German health authorities has been the key to our success,” said Hemming. “Sonny fills a vital role and he does it with a smile, which we can all appreciate during what has been a challenging time.” Zarecki organized several vaccination opportunities for the community of Garmisch, and he developed a great partnership with the German Gesundheitsamt — even leading to after-work leisure meetings, as much as COVID-19 restrictions would allow. “It’s been a pleasure supporting the Garmisch Community during COVID operations. The positive support of the community has made my job much easier,” Zarecki said. “I hope I left a positive impression on everybody that needed support during that time.” Every quarter based on two grade levels, installation employees are recognized for organizational work and behaviors that support and further the mission, goals, values and initiatives of the garrison. USAG Bavaria recognizes DHR employee for stellar job performance, dedication
by Sidney Sullivan USAG Bavaria Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria recently announced its 2021 Army Professional of the Year winners. The Level I recipient, Melisa R. Silva, proudly works for the Directorate of Human Resources on Tower Barracks. Silva is both a fingerprint coordinator and a DEERS verifying official for human resources. She was bestowed the USAG Bavaria Army Professional of the Year Level I award, after winning the first quarter honors in fiscal year 2021. “Mrs. Silva is an integral member of the MPD team,” said Military Personnel Division Chief Michele Crawford. “Her passion and commitment to the MPD mission, and the Army, is invaluable.” While Silva is a relatively new civilian employee with USAG Bavaria – transitioning from a contractor position to a federal position in August 2020 – her overall contributions to
Command system is temporarily nonoperational. “I provide digital and hard copy fingerprints for service members, civilians and family members,” Silva said. “These are used for security investigations, employment screening, naturalization, childcare background investigations, licensing credentials and various other reasons.”
“It’s a learning process – working with the military community amidst this pandemic. The key point is to provide the best possible service, while doing everything to stay healthy.” In addition to fulfilling the DHR fingerprint mission, Silva oversaw the day-to-day operations of the DEERS and ID card office – providing front door services for all community members across USAG Bavaria. “We handle all new ID cards that are a necessary tool for all employees and service members, we enroll new spouses, we enroll children that are born abroad, and we assist with updating DEERS profiles,” Silva said. “Even a simple task of unlocking a CAC must be done in our office.” Last but not least, Silva volunteered countless after-duty hours to ensure that ID card workstations obtained peak operational performance while finding solutions to troubleshoot issues. While the announcement may not be a shock to her colleagues, Silva said the award was a “complete surprise,” and she was extremely flattered to be recognized. “I have been fortunate to work with some great people! I like my job, and enjoy coming to work,” Silva said. “It’s a learning process – working with the military community amidst this pandemic. Armed Services Blood Program hosts its annual Grafenwoehr Blood Drive by Brea DuBose PR and Publicity Lead with American Red Cross Bavaria The Armed Services Blood Program traveled from Landstuhl, Germany, to conduct a two-day mission-essential blood drive at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria’s Tower View Conference Center on Feb. 7 – 8. Stacy Sanning, a blood donor recruiter with ASBP-Europe, said it is more important now than ever for military communities to give blood. “There is a national blood shortage going on in the U.S.,” Sanning said. “A lot of people don’t realize that actually could impact our military’s own blood supply. In addition to always needing blood, a constant supply is important because [blood] does expire.” According to Sanning, the donated blood gets sent to U.S. military hospitals in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The blood helps Soldiers on the battlefield and military families in their time of need. “The blood becomes very important — not only from a mission standpoint, but also a taking care of families standpoint,” Sanning said. Volunteers, from the American Red Cross in Bavaria, supported the blood drive by assisting with patient intake and providing snacks to those who donated. They checked in registered donors, and processed walk-ins to ensure they were
qualified to donate. ARC staff also sanitized the donor beds between patients, and transported donated blood to the processing table. This blood drive was community member Jamie Roney’s first day volunteering with ARC Bavaria. Roney managed the recovery station waiting area. After giving blood, donators were required to sit for at least 15 minutes of observation to ensure their safety. During this time Roney gave out snacks and ASBP swag, such as water bottles and t-shirts. “I thought it would be a good way to give back to the community,” Roney said. Sanning encourages community members to take advantage of drives when they are offered. “Because we’re the only donor center for all of Europe, we have to travel to many military installations,” Sanning said. “We spread [our visits] between the

Easter traditions in Germany

Things you didn’t know:
by Molly Hayden When it comes to celebrations in Germany, colorfully decorated trees are not just for the Christmas season. Roughly four weeks before Easter, which falls on April 17, 2022, handcrafted eggs dangle from the branches of birch trees — symbolizing new life and fertility. Towns of all sizes are painted in a sea of pastel. Public wells and fountains are elaborately adorned with greenery, garland and florid Easter eggs to welcome the spring season and offer thanks for life-giving water. Each town seeks to make its decorations bigger and brighter than the next, and one local village located 18 km south of Vilseck holds bragging rights. In 2005, the small town of SulzbachRosenberg entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the most eggs used to decorate an “Osterbrunnen,” or Easter fountain. The townspeople managed to hang a total of 16,500 eggs, beating out the previous record of 11,600 held by Baden-Wuerttemberg. This particular fountain is available for viewing from April 10 through May 1, 2022. For other Osterbrunnen locations within the county of Amberg-Sulzbacher, view this map. While the ornamentation comes early, the official Easter holiday in Germany begins on Gruendonnerstag (Maudy Thursday). Gruendonnerstag translates to “Green Thursday,” and it is believed to be the day on which the Last Supper was held. It is tradition to clean your house thoroughly on this day — a custom possibly linked to the preparation of a Passover Feast. Furthermore, green foods such as spinach, kale, cress, leek, chives and other herbs, are traditionally eaten on this day. In both American and German cultures, Good Friday is a day when Christians reflect on the crucifixion of Christ. But in Germany, the day is known as both Karfreitag meaning “sorrowful Friday” and Stiller Freitag meaning “quiet Friday.” Additionally, in Germany both Good Friday and Ostermontag (Easter Monday) are national holidays. While there are apparent differences,
many other German and American traditions overlap throughout the multi-day celebration. Easter eggs are dyed and children anticipate a visit from the Easter Bunny, or “Osterhase.” Outside of a COVID-19 environment, Ostersonntag (Easter Sunday) brings church services, family gatherings complete with culinary overindulgence, rousing Easter egg hunts and baskets filled to the brim with chocolate and candy. One uniquely German experience is the Saturday night bonfire — a symbol for the sun as the giver of life. Additionally, braided sweet bread in the shape of a wreath, or “Osterbrot,” can be found in German bakeries around the holiday. But America holds her head high as the birthplace of the infamous chick-shaped marshmallow treat, because nothing says “Happy Easter” or “Frohe Ostern” quite like a candy Peep. Bavaria
Need-To-Know Word Courtesy Story MilitaryInGermany.com You’ve been meaning to add new words to your German vocabulary, want to get to know key parts of Bavarian culture or you’re simply looking to learn some fun facts about Bavaria? Look no further, as this article will provide you with all kinds of general and niche knowledge on this special German state, and it’s even organized alphabetically. Altstadt – This is a term for Old Town, a historical downtown that many older German cities have. These are often full of gorgeous, historical buildings from different eras but you’ll commonly find timber-frame structures in German Old Towns. Some of Bavaria’s Old Towns are even part of UNESCO World Heritage, like Bamberg’s Altstadt, or have been used as locations for Hollywood movies, like the one in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Brezel – Pretzels (German singular: Brezel, plural: Brezeln / Brezen) have long conquered international markets, so chances are you had one or two in your life before you went to Germany for the first time. But, as Germans will reassure you, pretzels in Germany are much better than pretzels abroad. The most common type of pretzel you’ll find at every bakery is a lye pretzel (Laugenbrezel), the salty, hearty kind. Another popular type (traditionally eaten plain or with butter a day after New Year’s for example) is a sweet pretzel made from yeast dough, called Hefebrezel. Christkindlesmarkt Nürnberg – This is what Nuremberg’s huge Christmas Market is called, the literal translation would be Christ Child’s Market. It’s one of Germany’s PAGE 16
biggest Christmas Markets, with 180 booths welcoming over 2 Million visitors every year. Even if you’ve seen a couple of German Christmas Markets, this one is still an outstanding experience. Dirndl – A Dirndl is a traditional catholic costume for women, created in 19th century Bavaria and Austria. Nowadays, it’s widely seen as a traditional costume for Alpine regions, which brings me to an important point: Not all German women ever wear a Dirndl, but very few do so on a day-to-day basis. Since the 1990s it’s become popular to wear modern versions of it to Bavarian and Southern German folk festivals, the original Dirndl however were much heavier in fabric, more high-necked and often floor-length. The bow on the Dirndl’s apron can symbolize the wearer’s relationship status: a bow tied on her right side can symbolize that she’s taken or married, a bow tied on her left side can mean that she’s single. Erlangen – Erlangen is Bavaria’s smallest major city but widely known for its traditional annual beer festival Erlangener Bergkirchweih (called Berg – mountain, for short), which takes place in Summer. Erlangen is also worth a visit for their beautiful baroque Schlossgarten (castle garden). Fränkisch – Fränkisch means Franconian and it’s a regional Bavarian dialect which, in my opinion, sounds like a mixture of a Hessian and proper Bavarian dialect. Something you’ll hear in both Franconian and Bavarian dialects is the word fei (pronounced rhyming to ‘rye’), which can mean “really, indeed, too (certainly)”, and “by the way” depending on context.
Gerupfter – Gerupfter (literal meaning, probably referring to its texture: the one that’s plucked), more commonly known as Obazda, is a traditional Bavarian cheese delicacy. The main ingredients are soft aged cheese (usually Camembert or Romadur), butter, a small amount of beer, paprika powder, salt, pepper, and optionally onions or cream cheese. It’s typically eaten as a spread on pretzels and you’ll find it at lots of Bavarian Beer gardens. Heimat – Heimat can be translated to homeland, a place that you feel deeply connected to and call your home even when you’ve moved. Bavarians seem to have an especially strong rootedness in their state and culture, often seeing themselves as “Bavarian, not German”, something other German states would perhaps describe as being overly proud of one’s home state. Isar – The Isar is a river that flows through parts of Austria and Bavaria. Anything bigger than a raft isn’t allowed to frequent this river, but it has still become quite the tourist attraction. There’s a 25km raft channel from Wolfratshausen to Munich, frequented by large rafts that are furnished with tables to have a snack at. Another hotspot along the Isar is the so-called Eisbachwelle (Eisbach wave) near Prinzregentenstraße, where professional surfers can ride some waves without having to leave the city. Click here to find out more about what you can do while you’re in Munich. Jodeln – Yodeling is a form of singing without words, often produced by repeating meaningless syllables and rapidly changing between lower and higher pitches (click on the link for a short example). It is an old, mostly rural singing tradition local to www.Bavariannews.com
the German and French Alpine regions, the Bavarian, Harz and Thuringian Forest as well as some Austrian regions. The most common yodeling melodies can be traced back to the 18th, 19th and 20th century. Nowadays, yodeling is mostly present in folk music (see Volksmusik). Kirchweih – Kirchweih means parish fair, a folk festival originating from Medieval times when citizens came together to celebrate the consecration of a church in town. Historically, many German regions began to celebrate a more general and not church specific Kirchweih once a year to avoid the numerous church festivals that would’ve otherwise taken place all over the year. These days, there are manifold regional varieties within Germany and their names vary – these are the most common ones you might hear: Kirmes, Kerwe, Kerwa, Kärwa, Kirb, Kerb. Lederhosen – This is the male equivalent of a Dirndl, a traditional German garment for men. Although leather breeches were widely used as a sort of work uniform in many countries and different German regions, Bavarian King Ludwig the II and the Bavarian noble family Wittelsbach took liking to the idea of regionally varied, traditional costumes during the Romantic period. Leather breeches became more popular over time and reached their height as the most popular boys’ and men’s garment in Germany and Austria during the years following the second World War, replaced only later by jeans. Lederhosen are scarcely worn on an everyday basis these days, but you’ll see them at lots of Bavarian folk festivals. Maß – Maß is short for Maßkrug, a handled glass vessel
used to drink beer out of. You’ll find these at every Southern German Beer garden and folk festival, but Bavaria’s Oktoberfest is especially overflowing with them. The modern Maß holds a little over a liter of beer and often bears the brewery’s logo. If you’ve never drunk from a Maß before, you might be surprised by its weight: an empty glass weighs 2.9lb (1.3kg) and a full one weighs about 5.3lb, so get ready for sore arms! The world record in Maßkrugstemmen (Steinholding) is about 45 minutes. Nürnberger Opernball – Nuremberg’s annual opera ball is famous for attracting lovers of classical music as well as lots of celebrities, models, and entrepreneurs. With tickets starting at 169€ per person, this is a rather pricy event but still fun to watch on TV. In the past, Nuremberg has also hosted a parallel open-air event with free admission where you could get traditional Bavarian food and have some fun away from the extravagant crowds. Oktoberfest (Wiesn) – Oktoberfest, also known as Wiesn (a regional word for meadow), takes place in Munich annually and is the world’s biggest folk festival. The first Oktoberfest was hosted in 1810 and it’s only become more popular since then, attracting more than six million visitors each year. Because Oktoberfest is so immensely popular, planning ahead is key if you want to attend – we recommend starting to plan a year ahead! Click here for a summary of the most important things to know, or here for an experience report. Prinzregententorte – This tongue twister translates to ‘prince regent’s tarte’ and it’s about as fancy as it sounds. The tarte was SPRING 2022

created to honor 19th century Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold and is traditionally made out of eight very thin sponge cake bases, symbolizing the eight Bavarian administrative districts that existed until 1946. They’re covered with a delicious layer of dark chocolate. Prinzregententorte is said to be to Munich, what the infamous Sachertorte is to Vienna. Quartel / Quartl – You’ve already encountered the Maß, this is part two of Bavarian words for alcohol measurements. A Quartel, sometimes spelled without the e, is usually a quarter of a liter of beer, but it can also be used to refer to a quarter liter of wine. Residenz Würzburg – The residence in Würzburg is just one of the many Bavarian castles that are part of UNESCO World Heritage, although UNESCO apparently justified its inclusion by saying that it’s the most coherent and extraordinary of all baroque castles. The 18th century residence is known for its stunning ceiling fresco by Venetian painter Tiepolo and its many magnificently decorated halls. Should you ever visit Würzburg, this sight has to be on your list! Schäuferla – Schäuferla (or sometimes Schäufele) are a southern German traditional food. Its preparation can vary but in Bavaria’s Franconia region this dish is made from a pig’s shoulder meat into which the cook will carve a crisscross pattern. The meat is then seasoned with salt, pepper, and caraway and pot-roasted for two to three hours with root vegetables, onions and a bit of dark beer. When it’s done, the meat should be very soft and easily slide off the bone. SPRING 2022
Tegernsee – Tegernsee is a popular vacation spot in southern Bavaria, a crystal-clear lake encircled by the Alps. There’s lots of things to do near Tegernsee if you’re into sports: hiking, moutain biking, swimming, sailing, fishing, and much more. If you’re looking for a more relaxed stay you can go on a scenic walk or enjoy what is, in my humble opinion as a beer lover, Bavaria’s best beer, a Tegernseer. Unterfranken – Unterfranken is the region of Lower Franconia, located in Northern Bavaria. It is mostly known for its good beer and wine which originates in the vineyards located along the sunny riverside. Locals thus sometimes call it Weinfranken (Wine Franconia) or Mainfranken after the river Main (pronounced like mine). Lower Franconia is also home to many beautiful and historic cities worth a visit, such as Aschaffenburg, Miltenberg, or Würzburg. Volksmusik – This is something many Germans associate with Bavaria: folk music. Although folk music lovers tend to distance themselves from the cheesier Schlager

music, it’s still what most people attribute to this genre. Volksmusik, but especially Schlager (literally: hit, meaning: a type of catchy pop music, usually about love or relationships) are frequently played at folk festivals like Oktoberfest. Click here for an example of Schlager that many Germans will claim to dislike but still passionately dance to when it does get played. Weißwurstfrühstück – Weißwurstfrühstück is one of those really long German words for something amazing: a traditional Bavarian breakfast including Weißwürste (‘white’ veal sausages), pretzels, sweet mustard and beer. Although the name literally says that it’s a breakfast, it’s more common to have this as a small lunch or snack, for example at a Beer Garden. It does, however, seem to
work wonders after a night with too many Maß beer. Xaver und sein außerirdischer Freund (1986) – Full disclaimer: It was very hard to find something Bavarian starting with an X and since I stumbled upon this odd movie, you’ll have to bear with me. Xaver und sein außerirdischer Freund means ‘Xaver and his extraterrestrial friend’ and it’s a Bavarian science fiction movie from the 80s, sentimentally filmed in an idealized regional setting. It’s the Bavarian “E.T.” if you will, but with much stranger accents. I personally found
Y — to be honest, we couldn’t find anything for Y so we’re counting on You to let us know Your favorite German word that starts with a Y. Zugereiste(r) – This word is Bavarian for someone who isn’t local to Bavaria, the literal translation means ‘someone who’s travelled or moved here’. Zugereiste is the female form, Zugereister is the male form.
