The explosion of pink is everywhere reminding us that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With special focus on breast cancer awareness during the month of October, it is important to remember that breast cancer can occur at any time.

The American Cancer Society estimates about 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women for 2016 in the United States while about 61,000 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer), and about 40,450 women will die from breast cancer. About one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, only lung cancer kills more women each year. The chance that a woman will die from breast cancer is about 1 in 36 (about 3%).

Death rates from breast cancer have been dropping since about 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of finding breast cancer earlier through screening and increased awareness, as well as

better treatments.

The good news for those diagnosed with breast cancer, is that the survival rate is high if it's found and treated early.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into nearby tissues or spread to distant parts of the body.

Breast cancer happens mostly in women, but men can get it, too.

The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or a breast mass.

According to the American Cancer Society, other potential signs of breast cancer include: • • • •

Swelling of one breast or an area Skin irritation/dimpling Breast or nipple pain Nipple retraction (turning inward) • Redness, or thickening of the nipple or skin of the breast • Spontaneous, bloody nipple discharge (not associated with lactation) • Swollen lymph nodes under the arm or above the collar bone The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 40 - 44 should have the choice to start breast cancer screening with annual mammograms if they wish to do so. They also recommended that women ages

45 - 54 have mammograms every year for breast cancer screening. Women aged 55 and older who have had normal mammograms can have breast cancer screening by mammogram every two years, or decide whether to continue annual screening.

Mammograms are not the only screening tool, clinical exams, selfbreast exams, MRIs and ultrasounds are also used in the detection of breast cancer. Early detection allows for early treatment, which helps prevent cancer from growing and potentially spreading to other parts of the body.

If you notice any changes such as a lump, swelling, dimpling, pain or redness during your self-breast exams, see your health care provider right away.

Finding one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have cancer; your health provider will be able to offer you additional information and next steps.

Talk to your primary care provider about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member has had breast or ovarian cancer.

Fire Prevention Week: Don’t wait, check the date

As part of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9-15, U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart Fire Department visited the Kelley Barracks Child Development Center and Child, Youth and School Services Strong Beginnings class, and Robinson Barracks Elementary School kindergartners and Strong Beginnings students to teach them about fire prevention and fire safety.

U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart Fire Department held its annual fire prevention week Oct. 9-15. The weeklong event is designed to teach children the importance of fire safety and prevention.

This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait, Check the Date.” Fire Department officials ask that everyone Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” to better educate the public about the critical importance of knowing how old their smoke alarms are and replacing them once they’re 10 years old.

During the week fire fighters visited the exchange on Panzer Kaserne at lunchtime to pass out information on fire safety for kids and parents.

Fire fighters also visited Panzer Kaserne, Robinson and Kelley Barracks. They made stops at the Kelley Barracks Child Development Center and Child, Youth and School Services Strong Beginnings class, then continued on to visit Robinson Barracks Elementary School kindergartners and Strong Beginnings students teaching them the importance of fire safety.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250

people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.

The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.

According to popular legend, the fire broke out after a cow - belonging to Mrs. Catherine O’Leary - kicked over a lamp, setting first the barn, then the whole city on fire. Chances are you’ve heard some version of this story yourself; people have been blaming the Great Chicago Fire on the cow and Mrs. O’Leary, for more than 130 years. But recent research by Chicago historian Robert Cromie has helped to debunk this version of events.

Like any good story, the ‘case of the cow’ has some truth to it. The great fire almost certainly started near the barn where Mrs. O’Leary kept her five milking cows. But there is no proof that O’Leary was in the barn when the fire broke out - or that a jumpy cow sparked the blaze. Mrs. O’Leary herself swore that she’d been in bed early that night, and that the cows were also tucked in for the evening.

But if a cow wasn’t to blame for the huge fire, what was? Over the years, journalists and historians have offered plenty of theories. Some blamed the blaze on a couple of neighborhood boys who were near the barn sneaking cigarettes. Others believed

that a neighbor of the O’Leary’s may have started the fire. Some people have speculated that a fiery meteorite may have fallen to earth on October 8, starting several fires that day — in Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as in Chicago.

While the Great Chicago Fire was the best-known blaze to start during this fiery two-day stretch, it wasn’t the biggest. That distinction goes to the Peshtigo Fire, the most devastating forest fire in American history. The fire, which also occurred on October 8th, 1871, and roared through Northeast Wisconsin, burning down 16 towns, killing 1,152 people, and scorching 1.2 million acres before it ended.

Historical accounts of the fire say that the blaze began when several railroad workers clearing land for tracks unintentionally started a brush fire.

Before long, the fast-moving flames were whipping through the area ‘like a tornado,’ some survivors said. It was the small town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin that suffered the worst damage.

Within an hour, the entire town had been destroyed.

Those who survived the Chicago and Peshtigo fires never forgot what they’d been through; both blazes produced countless tales of bravery and heroism. But the fires also changed the way that firefighters and public

officials thought about fire safety. On the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals Association), decided that the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire should henceforth be observed not with festivities, but in a way that would keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.

The commemoration grew incrementally official over the years.

In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. According to the National Archives and Records Administration’s Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925.

USAG Stuttgart to test emergency response

U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart will conduct a combined Force Protection and Emergency Management Full Scale Exercise Oct. 22 at the Stuttgart Army Airfield with various scenarios.

This exercise will measure the Host Nation’s Fire, Deutsch Rote Kreuz, Polizei

and garrison's ability to properly handle emergency situations. “The exercise provides us an opportunity to train together and address issues that may arise in a real emergency,” said Daniel W. Spencer, USAG Stuttgart Emergency Manager, Protection Branch.

During this exercise there will be heightened security patrols and force protection measures will increase at the gates, and

heightened security measures will be implemented at on-post facilities. “As with any real emergency there will be some inconveniences such as temporary gate closures as we transition from FPCON (Force Protection Conditions),” said Spencer.

The exercise helps USAG Stuttgart to identify shortcomings in its preparedness and correct those in the event of an actual emergency.

Holiday season heightens importance for vigilance During the upcoming holiday season, beginning with Halloween through New Year’s Eve, events with large gatherings and cultural significance present attractive targets for terrorists. U.S. and DoD interests continually faces an active terrorist threat, although there is no specific, actionable threat

to the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart military community members and facilities remain attractive targets worldwide.

Lone offenders inspired by the international terrorist organizations ideology maintain an unwavering intent to attack the westerns abroad. The recent activities of lone offenders and international terrorist groups

warrants a renewed emphasis on antiterrorism training, awareness and education.

Antiterrorism awareness is a critical aspect of our profession both on and off duty because the threat of a terrorist incident is real.

The probability of collateral injuries from an incident has increased over the past few months, especially at transportation hubs. Terrorism remains an enduring, persistent, world-wide threat to our Armed Forces. One of our most effective techniques to prevent a terrorist attack is training and awareness of all of our key personnel: military, civilians, contractors and family members.

Maintaining awareness in all activities both on and off post will help ensure the safety and security of the USAG Stuttgart community.

“Our Soldiers and their families know what they’ve signed up for, and they know the type of business we are in, but we can all help watch each other’s back. AT Awareness focuses on training; this is

critical in protecting our people and enabling our missions. Awareness is our most certain defense against an act of terrorism. If you see something – say something,” said Robert J. Daul, USAG Stuttgart’s antiterrorism officer.

Report Activity

Reporting suspicious activity is also a very important. Any suspicious activity should be reported through the unit chain of command, the Military Police and/or Military Intelligence channels such as

the IReport/IWatch mobile app.

What else can you do?

Safeguard your Common Access Cards (CAC) and ID cards. These can be extremely useful to someone with bad intentions. Not only does it allow access to the installation and its services, but also grants access to USAG Stuttgart’s network.

Practice good OPSEC (operations security), be aware of what you post on social media (including pictures), and ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your home.

Soldiers of U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart celebrated the U.S. Army Military Police Corps' 75th anniversary with a 75 km Esprit de Corps run, Sept. 28 at Husky Field on Patch Barracks in Vaihingen.

The regimental run was coordinated by all MPs in Stuttgart with participants from U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, 554th Military Police Company, Directorate of Emergency Services, Criminal Investigation Command and Customs Office, running laps throughout the day to reach the 75 km goal. The final lap was run in formation led by Col. David J. Segalla, Jr., division chief, ACJ34, AFRICOM. “Seventy-five years, from the

Marechaussee Corps, Washington’s Army and the Continental Army to the MP Corps today, Sept. 26, 1941 is our birthday, but our legacy and history goes back much past that.

Today it is important to remember all those that have come before us, Soldiers, Noncomissioned Officers, Officers, Department of the Army civilians, family members - those that all made it happen in the past. We will continue for another 75,” Segalla said.

“What you represent is the future and the promise to keep the spirit of the MP Corps going forward 'Assist Protect, Defend'...it is not always easy, not always fun... collectively you are serving your country in a noble profession.”

U.S. Army Soldiers from the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa communications directorate held an Africa Data Sharing Network (ADSN) sharing of best practices and validation session with Djibouti Armed Forces (FAD) members Sept. 28, 2016, at FAD Headquarters in Djibouti City, Djibouti.

The ADSN works as an internal network that the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troop contributing countries can use to communicate and share information amongst each other.

“Today we were just finishing up the final validation for the Djiboutians, so we can know for sure that they know how to set up the terminal, use it and troubleshoot it” said Spc. Shawn Wilson, CJTFHOA ADSN technician. “The terminal is used as the Africa Data Sharing Network.

Multiple African nations use it to share information. It’s also used for intelligence so they can combat al-Shabaab.”

The validation training was held to ensure the FAD members are capable of setting up an ADSN satellite, modem and achieving network connectivity in preparation for a deployment to Somalia.

“The network gives them video and voice calling capabilities amongst themselves and with [U.S. forces] at certain locations,” said Wilson, a native of Las Vegas. “So in addition to video and voice calling, they also have teleconferencing capability along with a SharePoint page where they can receive, share and request intelligence, along with a printing capability.”

The training not only covered setup and teardown, but also troubleshooting the terminal.

“This training is very important to us. When we face a problem we have the knowledge of how to solve and fix the problem,” said 1st Lt. Abdoulaziz, FAD communications specialist.

also important to confirm the FAD soldiers had the skills necessary to maintain the equipment.

“They can maintain communications without local support from us because we can’t physically go to their operating locations,” Wilson continued.

“So while they are downrange they can get the intel and information that we disseminate, and it is readily available to them as they need it.”

Service members from both the U.S. and Djibouti also agreed that they enjoyed working and learning with each other.

“It was very nice and a good experience,” Abdoulaziz said. “They are good instructors and we benefited from the relationship with them and the knowledge. I feel they are well represented and patient to explain things to us.“

RAF Mildenhall — Pre-flight briefs, heavy cargo loads, drop zone statistics, personnel guidance, aircraft and equipment inspections – a few of the many crucial steps it took Airmen from the 352d Special Operations Wing to execute a Maritime Craft Aerial Delivery System drop Sept. 27, 2016.

As part of the combined, joint force exercise Night Hawk, these Airmen worked alongside Danish air commandos and a U.S. Navy Special Warfare Combatant-Craft unit to perform two MCADS drops, bundle deployments and air commando jumps over Little Belt Strait in Denmark.

“A lot of work goes into a drop like this, but we routinely work with partner nations in order to hone our ability to work together in an operational environment and build on the relationships we have developed over years,” Maj. Andrew Pickering, 352 SOW MC-130J Commando II pilot and mission commander.

Mission planning, that began weeks prior, led up to successful cargo loads on Stuttgart Air Base, Germany.

Loadmasters and crew chiefs of an MC130J Commando II, assigned to the 67th Special Operations Squadron, worked with Navy crewmen to load two rigid inflatable boats and a bundle onto the aircraft. The RIBs were strategically loaded, inspected and re-inspected in preparation for the MCADS drop the following day.

“The MCADS requires a different type of coordination between the crew and users as far as how it’s executed compared to a standard heavy equipment drop,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Jones, 67 SOS loadmaster.

Tech. Sgt Adam Phelan, 752d Special Operations Group MC-130J Commando II evaluator loadmaster, explained how

the MCADS mission poses unique challenges.

“It’s challenging because it’s a combination airdrop, heavy equipment in conjunction with personnel, utilizing a 20,000 pound boat that fills the cargo compartment,” said Phelan. “The MCADS is a specialized airdrop load, which requires experienced and trained loadmasters to ‘be on their game’ to deploy, load, rig, and execute the mission set. It is a very rewarding airdrop to accomplish.”

The MCADS increases special operation forces capabilities.

“Specifically it allows aerial delivery of naval SOF insertion and extraction for underway visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS), maritime interdiction, and support for direct action missions among other capabilities,” explained Phelan.

“The 752 SOG is ready to execute the MCADS mission in a joint environment to deliver combat power anywhere it is required and trains its aircrews to a high standard in order to deliver results; anytime, anyplace.”

U.S. Navy Seals followed the MCADS and bundle drop to setup the equipment post hitting the water. After the RIBs are operational, Danish air commandos performed a static line drop followed by military free-fall from Air Force air commandos.

The exercise tested the capabilities of each unit and demanded attention to detail from all aspects. The service members’ hard work was well worth the effort.

“This exercise allowed our Airmen and their Danish counterparts to practice drops with the MCADS in a controlled environment to enhance our ability to work together and ensure we are successful in a real-world scenario,” said Pickering. “This type of training is invaluable and only adds to our ability to provide combat air power in a variety of locations and scenarios.”

Garrison-wide antiterrorism exercise oct. 22

There will be increased force protection at gates and on-post across all installations. Road and parking barriers will be in place in certain areas to reduce parking movement near the exercise. To maintain the integrity of the emergency scenario training, blocking locations will not be announced prior to the event. Community members will notice a visible increase in Military Police, fire and emergency first responder activity, including casualty role-play. Many Service members will be in full tactical uniforms with equipment deployed around the installations.

Stuttgart High School celebrates homecoming

The sun had set almost an hour previously, but the spotlights on the field illuminated the baby powder still suspended in the air over the crowded stands of spectators; the clamor of the throng almost drowned out the sound of the school band.

After a remorseless two hours of consecutive touchdowns, the Stuttgart High School Panthers defeated the Kaiserslautern Raiders, 33-3, in a spectacular home football game, Sept. 30.

The celebratory homecoming dance was the night after, in the Stuttgart High cafeteria.

The homecoming dance theme this year was the customary black and gold colors, which, to the dismay of most, did not show well in the dark, but the lights and the music seemed to make up for that in the opinions of many Stuttgart student attendees.

Many of the students that had been asked how they felt about the 2016 Homecoming Dance had great thoughts; several even named it “...Way better than last year,” said

Much praise was rallied for this year’s dance by both students and teachers alike, in

spite of its lack of clear theme and chillier temperatures outside.

“I think it’s theme less, but it’s got some nice strobe lights, so that’s nice.” - Victoria Rockwell, SHS senior. It is the “Best ever!!, “said Lisa Gingles, SHS Junior/Senior Counsellor.

“All in all, me and my date really enjoyed it,” said Cameron Phister, SHS junior.

Outside in the Square, a camera crew had set up shop and was taking pictures of groups and couples alike for a small fee of $2.00 for couples and $5.00 for groups. It was a popular decision among the high schoolers who frequented the square hoping to get their group's photos taken!

The cafeteria was devoid of its usual tables (except a few around the edges of the room), clearing a wide open space for dancing and moving around. Though many students milled about outside or in the hallway, the majority of the attendees

stayed in the cafeteria.

Small groups of friends danced in circles, around the sides of the room, but a massive sea of colorful dresses and suits remained dancing right up against the stage for most, if not all, of the event.

The stage held the speakers, the lights, and the DJ; several adventurous students even climbed up on the platform and danced for a while, much to the excitement and amusement of their peers.

The back doors leading to the football field were open to let in some air, and students could wander outdoors if they felt so inclined. The night proved itself to be rather cool later in the evening, complete with sprinkled cold rain for about half an hour after the sun went down.

Parents provided the refreshments: various sweet food items were being sold, such as brownies, cookies, (and who could forget the fabulous cupcakes), as well as water bottles for those brave souls on the dance floor.

Although this year’s dance was, for the most part, fairly well-received, a few students didn’t think so highly: “Mediocre at best,” commented Harrison Aiton, SHS senior.

“Well, this homecoming could’ve been a little better,” said Yariel Perez, SHS senior.

Some had suggestions on how to improve the event in coming years: “Maybe next year there’ll be a little more space; more room to roam,” said Isaac Harper, SHS senior.

Despite the few negative opinions, the dance was considered a success, particularly in comparison to last year’s. The vast majority of the students and teachers interviewed both during and after the dance said they had fun, and that they looked forward to next year’s if it was to be anything like 2016.

Singing, lantern parades mark St. Martin’s Day in Germany

It may be dark and cold in Germany on the night of Nov. 11, but this is not why passersby will see children walking with a lantern.

As they walk, they sing: “I am walking with my lantern and my lantern is walking with me,” the children sing.

“Up in the sky the stars are shining and down on earth we are shining as well.

Saint Martin leads us — labimmel, labammel, labum.”

The song and hand-crafted lanterns part of Saint Martin’s Day, celebrated all over Germany each year to honor Saint Martin, the patron saint of charity.

People in Germany, Bavaria, and Austria remember Saint Martin, a Roman legionnaire who converted to Christianity, became a monk and then, in 372 A.D., became the bishop of Tours.

Legend has it that the Roman Soldier, Martin, was traveling on a cold, winter night on his horse when he saw a freezing beggar. Martin felt compassion for the beggar and divided his coat into two pieces in order to share it with the beggar.

With this donation, Martin saved the beggar’s life and became the patron saint of charity.

Based on this legend, people all over Germany celebrate St. Martin’s Day each year with traditional St.

Martin’s Day parades, the lighting of the Martin’s fire and reenactments of the legend.

Kindergarten and elementary school children craft their lanterns and rehearse songs about St. Martin for weeks in advance and then, during the evening of Nov. 11, light their lanterns and walk through the neighborhood with their family and friends.

This fall tradition has similarities to the American Halloween, since some children collect candies and baked goods. However, there is more to Martin’s Day, also called “Martini Day.” The special highlight of the day is the Martin’s goose. According to the legend, when the people of Tours elected Martin to become bishop, the humble man felt uncomfortable with the responsibility. Therefore, he decided to hide in a goose stall. However, the geese chattered loudly and Martin was found and given the title of bishop.

This is why people in Southern Germany enjoy the traditional Martin’s goose dinner. The goose is stuffed and served with red cabbage and dumplings.

Children prefer baked Martin’s geese made out of cookie or yeast dough as a sweet twist on the original recipe, or the traditional salty Martin’s pretzel. In the Northern part of Germany, children receive a Martin’s pretzel made out of sweet yeast dough sprinkled with sugar.

Community Lantern Walk for “Martinstag” Join the annual U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart Community Lantern Walk, Nov. 7-8 and 10 on Patch Barracks, Robinson Barracks and Panzer Kaserne respectively. The event is open to all ages within the Stuttgart military community.

What began as a Child, Youth and School Services SKIES Unlimited German student’s tradition, has turned into a big event with children and parents participating from across the Stuttgart military community. Walkers bring their own lanterns, or “Lanternelaufen,” and come together to celebrate “Martinstag.”

Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. on Robinson Barracks, meet at the RB Community Club, Building 168.

Stuttgart Theatre Center and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation present a classic murder mystery from world-famous author Agatha Christie, “The Mousetrap” running now through Sunday, Oct. 30.

“The Mousetrap” opened in the West End of London in 1952, and has been running continuously since then. It has by far the longest initial run of any play in history, with its 25,000th performance taking place on 18 November 2012. The play is known for its twist ending, which the audience are traditionally asked not to reveal after leaving the theatre.

The play is based on a short story, itself based on the radio play, but Christie asked that the story not be published as long as it ran as a play in the West End of London. The short story has still not been published within the United Kingdom but it has appeared in the United States in the 1950 collection Three Blind Mice and Other Stories.
