Members of U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden gathered for an all-hands meeting recently to recognize a few high-performing garrison employees. The event, held July 15 in the Tony Bass Auditorium, began with remarks from Col. Todd J. Fish, USAG Wiesbaden commander, where he thanked the assembled employees for their hard work during the recent German-American Friendship Festival. “We had a great German-American Fest, all because of you,” Fish said. “I’d especially like to thank [the Directorate of Emergency Services] and [Family and MWR]. It really took a joint effort to make that happen.” Fish also asked those assembled to take a moment to fill out the ongoing Command Climate Survey, which closes at the end of August. “I ask for you all to help,” he said. “We do [this survey] so we know what we can do to support you.” After the commander’s remarks, awards were presented to some of the assembled employees. Wilfried Peters, former member of the Plans, Analysis and Integration Office, received the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service, for his time with the garrison. Peters received the award in part because of his “extraordinary leadership, competence and professionalism,” according to the citation. The Second Quarter Fiscal Year 2016 Customer Service Award was presented to Ezekiel Waan, Child and Youth Program Assistant with Family and MWR. The Team Excellence Award for this quarter was presented to the Postal Service Center Team members for “their outstanding customer support for 17,000 customers of the Wiesbaden and surrounding communities,” according to the citation. Recognized were Howard Tessier, Chucky Young, Jonathon Palmer, Andreas Seelinger, Kendra Vin-

News and features South Gate/ Pedestrian gates
Ask the
Anonymous said: Is the old south gate on Clay Kaserne ever going to open back up? Right now, it’s a problem to get double strollers back on post through the pedestrian gates. In addition, walking with a stroller to the main gate along a regularly-traveled road without a sidewalk is not safe. If the old south gate isn’t going to be reopened, is there any possibility of getting just one larger pedestrian gate installed, preferably near the housing community? Thank you for your time and consideration of this matter. Response: At this time there are no plans to reopen the south gate. With the opening of the Clay Main Access Control Point, three former gates were consolidated into one. As for the pedestrian gates, acquiring new larger gates is not a viable option. Aside from cost, the problem is that the companies who manufacture these types of gates do not make a large version. By design, they are intended to be small to limit access to a single pedestrian. The guards at the gate are able to grant access once you have entered the booth by using the call button. This is, of course, providing that you and the stroller can fit inside the booth at the same time. Unfortunately, if the size of a stroller does not permit this, then the only access option would be to enter the installation at the main ACP.
ID card system down

ID cards cannot be issued due to technical complications. I understand that these instances can’t be helped. But why wouldn’t a phone call or email be posted out to the people who have these appointments prior to them arriving and being informed that the system is down? Why can’t there be a community wide email that says ID cards can’t be issued until system is back up? And when the system is back up another email is sent out so whoever has an appointment still that day after the up time can make it, and those who had to have their appointment canceled can reschedule as early as possible. Response: Thank you for your comment, and the ID Card Office apologizes for the issue and the impact on you. When these problems occur, they never know how long the issue may last; sometimes it’s only a few minutes, sometimes it can last a couple of days. The ID Card Office cannot get a commitment from the agency that runs the system as to when a certain problem might get fixed, only that it is being worked and will be resolved as soon as possible. An email to the individuals with appointments is something that the ID Card Office has now looked into and will be pursuing. Army announces new policy on rolled sleeves By David Vergun Army News Service
Effective June 28, commanders may authorize Soldiers to roll up the sleeves on Army combat uniforms, according to a memorandum signed by Lt. Gen. James C. McConville, deputy chief of staff, G-1. The new policy pertains to the universal camouflage pattern, operational camouflage pattern and Operation Enduring Freedom camouflage-pattern ACUs. “We’re going sleeves up, camo out,” said Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey. The sleeves will be rolled above the elbow, right-side out with the camouflage pattern showing. They should be rolled no more than three inches above the elbow, according to the memo, and this method will be used primarily in garrison. Soldiers on U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden should speak to their units about whether sleeve rolling is authorized, according to Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Larry Addington. “Each unit commander will make that decision,” he said. In addition, during field training exercises or operations, upon approval of the commander, sleeves may be opened and cuffed inward above the wrist on the forearm. “It’s often referred to as a Delta roll or SF roll,” Dailey said. This second method of staying cool is specifically for Soldiers in a field or deployed environment, he emphasized. Soldiers have to remember, though, that these authorizations are only good when not precluded by safety, Dailey said. “Like when you’re in a combat vehicle, the sleeves have to go down.” There will be no time restrictions on the new policy, Dailey said. “For instance, company commanders in Hawaii can make the decision to go sleeves up any time of year.” While the decision to roll sleeves rests with unit commanders, he said that the Army-wide policy has changed due to input from Soldiers. “The overwhelming support from Soldiers around the Army was a big factor in coming to this decision,” he said. Soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, were given permission earlier this month to begin rolling up their sleeves for a 10-day period, when visited by Dailey and Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Mark A. Milley.

A Soldier demonstrates how to roll up ACU sleeves so that the top portion can be pulled down over the roll for camo out. At the time that permission was given midmonth, the sleeve-rolling was considered an experiment for a possible Army-wide policy, according to a G-1 spokesman. That spokesman, Lt. Col. Jerry Pionk, said “feedback from Soldiers resulted in us wanting to do a trial over the next 10 days to see the feasibility of updating AR 670-1 and incorporating in the future for the force to give commanders flexibility in wear based upon their unit’s mission.” Soldier feedback on the issue has been populating social media sites for the past two weeks. For instance, in a June 21 post on the Army Facebook page, the question was asked: “Let your voice be heard!! If you’re a #USArmy Soldier, the #15th SMA wants to know what you want: Camo in or Camo out?” One commented: “Go back to the good ole days! It was an art to roll those sleeves!” She was referring to 2006, before the Battle Dress Uniform was phased out. At the time the camouflage pattern remained on the outside. Most, but not all, of the sentiment appeared to be “camo out.” Some didn’t agree at all with rolling them up, but that appeared to be a small minority. That Army Facebook posting generated a lot of interest. Twitter and other social media sites generated similar outpourings. News and features Beware of misfires with government travel card By Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Foiles U.S. Army
VICENZA, Italy — Department of Defense policy is that the Government Travel Charge Card will be used by all DoD personnel (military or civilian) to pay for all costs related to official government travel. A major benefit of using the GTCC is limiting out-of-pocket expenses associated with official travel. In order to avoid common mistakes and pitfalls when using the GTCC, it is important to stay abreast of current regulations and policies. An excellent way to stay current is by taking the “Program & Policies — Travel Card 101” training just before traveling. Travel Card 101 highlights the official position for GTCC usage and cardholder responsibilities. Another excellent resource is the organization Resource Manager and/or Government Travel Card Agency Program Coordinator. This person can answer most frequently asked questions and help cardholders determine what is or is not an allowable expense. Use of the GTCC is a valuable privilege a person can lose if he or she misuses the card. Another area that may cause travelers some confusion is determining what is considered an incidental expense in regards to official travel. ATM fees, baggage tips and transportation tips are part of daily incidental expenses and cannot
be claimed under a separate expense. Incidental expenses do not include mission-related purchases or products or services purchased/used for personal hygiene (e.g., barbers, hairdressers, toothpaste, haircuts, manicurists or other similar items or services). Before travel, a best practice is to review the “Incidental Expense Policy” in Appendix A of the Joint Travel Regulations. This will ensure that cardholders are up to date on what is and is not an allowed purchase with the GTCC. Finally, remember that all claims have to be submitted within five days of completion of your travel. Actions available when military personnel misuse the travel card include counseling, admonishment, reprimand, non-judicial punishment (Article 15, Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ)), courtmartial and administrative separation. Civilian personnel who misuse or abuse the travel card may be subject to appropriate administrative or disciplinary action up to, and including, removal from federal service. Willful misuse of the travel card by DoD personnel (military or civilian) may constitute a crime punishable under federal or state law. Remember, a host of resources is available to assist when someone is on official travel. Do not fall back to the “I did not know” excuse. Be a professional and use available resources. Safe travels!
A guide to some common misuses •Do not use the GTCC to exceed allowable daily meals and incidental expenses (M&IE) rate. •Do not use the GTCC to make non-travel related purchases: i.e., books, magazines, gym fees, gifts, room service, movie tickets, registration fees or tuition and souvenirs or non-reimbursable items, such as tires or repairs to your POV while on TDY status. •Do not use the GTCC for personal expenses associated with “leave in conjunction with official travel.” If you are not on official travel, DO NOT use the GTCC. •Do not take cash advances from the ATM more than three working days before scheduled departure dates of any official travel, or for an amount that exceeds allowable M&IE expenses or after the TDY terminates. Travelers may use their travel card at ATMs to obtain cash needed to pay for “out-of-pocket” travel-related expenses. Valid “out-of-pocket” expenses are those that cannot be charged on the travel card.
Prior to traveling, remember to contact the travel card vendor to establish a personal identification number to gain ATM access. •Do not use the GTCC to pay for meals for spouse/family/friends who are not on the official travel orders. •Do not use the GTCC after the time the TDY terminates, only when in a travel status. •Do not claim mileage when driving a rental car or claim mileage reimbursement when you are a passenger. •Do not use the GTCC at establishments or for purposes that are inconsistent with the official business of DoD or with applicable standards of conduct. •Do not claim fuel expenses when driving a POV (you can claim mileage only). •Do not claim the full meal rate when a portion or all meals are provided. •Do not allow the monthly bill to become overdue — submit travel voucher within five days of travel.

News and features International license required outside Germany Story and photos by Amy L. Bugala
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs
The long days of summer are finally here, and Europe is at your doorstep – sounds like the perfect time for a road trip, right? Before setting that navigation system to a destination outside Germany’s borders, military and DoD personnel stationed in Germany are reminded they will need an International Driver’s License, or IDL, in addition to a U.S. Forces Certificate of License (USAREUR license) and a valid stateside driver’s license to make the trip. Wiesbaden’s Driver Training and Testing Station personnel want to help you get the proper documentation in hand in time for your vacation. “For incoming personnel and family members the priority is to get a USAREUR Driver’s license, to operate a POV on and off installations in Germany,” said Pascal Correc, drivers training instructor, at the Wiesbaden Driver Training and Testing Station. However, at the start of every POV orientation Wiesbaden’s instructors tell students to not delay getting their IDLs and obtaining the signed application from their office is the first step. “Every student who completes the POV orientation here, passes the written test and receives their USAREUR driver’s license should return to our offices for an IDL application if they plan to drive outside Germany’s borders,” Correc said. An IDL can’t be obtained using the temporary USAREUR license issued immediately after passing the written test. To apply, visit the Wiesbaden DTTS located on Clay Kaserne, building 1023W, 3rd Floor. Applicants should bring their USAREUR license and a valid stateside license. The application must be completed in person and signed by DTTS personnel. It takes approximately 10 minutes. No appointment is required; however, you can call ahead to determine staff availability at DSN 546-6076/6077 or civ (0611) 143-546-6076/6077.
Next, bring the signed application, a single passport photo, your USAREUR driver’s license, official or tourist passport (red or blue), valid stateside driver’s license, your Department of Defense ID card and 15 euros or a credit card to the off-post KFZ-Zulassungsstelle facility (This is the German equivalent to the Department of Motor Vehicles) located in Wiesbaden-Schierstein. “No additional drivers test is required to get an IDL. Just some paperwork, valid documentation and 15 euros,” Correc said. Some navigation systems may direct drivers past the facility to the “Federal Mogul” building; however, the vehicle entrance to the KFZ-Zulassungsstelle is immediately past the blue sign for “TÜV Hessen Service Center” on the right-hand side of the street. Free parking is available. “They offer extended evening hours until 6 p.m. on Wednesdays which makes it a convenient time to visit the facility,” Correc said. When you enter the building look for a small electronic kiosk in the waiting area to get a number. The kiosk screen will say “Warteticket.” Press the orange button with the word “Fahrerlaubnisbehörde.” A paper ticket will print with a customer number that begins with the letter “F.” Pay attention to the screens on the wall. When your number comes up, your appointment will be upstairs on the first floor (1. Stock) in the room (Raum) indicated on the screen. After processing, you will return downstairs and pay at the “Kasssenautomat” before the IDL is issued. The self-service pay station works like a parking meter or “Parkschein Automat” and accepts euros or credit cards. An International Driver’s License costs 15 euros. Passport photos can be taken at self-service photo booths located at the food court on Clay Kaserne and the Hainerberg Exchange Mall. There is also a booth located in the entrance of the KFZ-Zulassungsstelle facility, in case you forget to bring one. Four photos cost 5 euros. You will need scissors to cut one photo from the page.

Vietnam pilot recounts rescue mission By Elizabeth M. Collins Soldiers Magazine
WASHINGTON — The bullets came in fast and furious, a hail so thick it seemed like rain with a fog of green tracers. The men of the 176th Aviation Company were used to hot landings after months in Vietnam, but this, this was something else. A battalion’s worth of fire seemed to be trained on the Hueys all at once, clipping rotors, windshields, fuel lines. Still the pilots flew, their blades whirring and thunking as they approached the landing zone. They had been flying back and forth all day, bringing in fresh troops and ammunition, taking out the wounded as the battle went from bad to worse. Forty-four Soldiers were on the ground, outnumbered, outgunned and desperate. It would take a hero — several heroes, actually — to rescue them, to get them home safe to their parents, wives and children. It would take daring, bravery and guts. It would take someone like now-retired Lt. Col. Charles Kettles, who led the rescue — and then went back again — and received the Medal of Honor for it in a White House ceremony on July 18.
BORN TO FLY
Kettles was born to be a pilot. His Canadian-born father served in the British Royal Air Force during World War I and the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He raised his son around planes, and Kettles grew up assuming “everyone would want to fly.” So when Kettles received a draft notice at the close of the Korean War, he was excited. It was an escape from two fulltime jobs and an opportunity to “sleep in to as late as 6 in the morning.” It was also a chance to fly. He served in post-war Korea, Japan and Thailand. He married and had children, one of whom would eventually fly for the Navy. He opened a Ford dealership back home in Michigan with his brother. Then he volunteered for Vietnam.

Maj. Charles Kettles (left) stands beside his heavily damaged Huey helicopter after a battle near Duc Pho, Vietnam, May 15, 1967. “The Army was in need of pilots,” he explained. “They had spent a great deal training me. … I think we all have an obligation in this country to respond where the need may be.”
VIETNAM
Then-Maj. Kettles deployed to Vietnam in early 1967 as a platoon leader and aircraft commander with the 176th, part of 14th Combat Aviation Battalion, Americal Division. “You questioned why anyone would be at war,” he remembered. “They had so much territory that seemed to be unused. … It was an absolutely beautiful country.” The war started for the company in earnest a few months later when it was assigned to support the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. The infantry unit always seemed to be in some sort of contact and it was the pilots’ job to transport and supply them. Then-Sgt. Dewey Smith was in the weapons platoon of B Company. His unit spent two, three, even four weeks straight in the field. “They were always in action,” said retired Lt. Col. Ronald Roy, then a pilot and warrant officer. Pilots typically flew 10 hours a day, although 16 or 17 hours wouldn’t be unusual. By the second week of May, things got “pretty hairy,” near Duc Pho in the highlands, said Smith. His platoon confronted more than 100 enemy soldiers
May 13. Another company was overrun the next day, while six other Soldiers found their reconnaissance patrol compromised. Kettles and another pilot managed to rescue them from a B52 bomb crater minutes before another bomb strike. Kettles earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions, an award that would be overshadowed by events the very next day, May 15.
CHUMP VALLEY
That’s when the 176th inserted another reconnaissance patrol in a valley Soldiers nicknamed “‘Chump Valley,’ because someone said only a chump would go there,” Kettles remembered. The men soon confronted a large enemy force, and Smith’s weapons platoon and his company’s 3rd platoon were called on as reinforcements. The battle raged for hours, and even heavy artillery and airstrikes couldn’t dislodge the enemy. Pilots from the 176th made several trips, bringing in ammunition and reinforcements and evacuating the wounded. “It was like rain … coming straight up out of the wood line,” described Roy, who earned a Silver Star. “Without hesitation, we flew through it.” The fire was so withering, Roy continued, that Soldiers couldn’t even leave the limited safety of the trees to deliver the wounded to his helicopter, which touched down in the middle of the LZ. He maneu-

Meanwhile, two wounded Soldiers had dived onto Kettles’ helicopter just as a volley of bullets sprayed the aircraft, leaving about 30 rounds throughout the Huey.
RESCUE MISSION
By late afternoon, the 176th Aviation Company was down to one working helicopter and 44 Soldiers who were fighting for their lives in Chump Valley. Kettles ignored orders to stand down. He coordinated with the 161st Aviation Company to obtain more helicopters and crews, scraping together six helicopters. The last pilot in the formation confirmed they had all the Soldiers, and the helicopters took off. But he was wrong, dead wrong, someone from the command and control aircraft yelled over the radio. Eight Soldiers had been left behind.
NEAR DISASTER
From the ground, Smith watched the last helicopter take off: “If it’s possible for your heart to fall into your boots, that’s what mine did.” Horrified, Kettles turned his helicopter around. Smith thought for sure the helicopter would either be shot

down or be forced to turn around. The hail of machine-gun tracers and mortars was that intense, but Kettles never flinched, even when one “mortar round went off almost immediately off of the nose and took out part of each windshield and the chin bubble” and another damaged the tail. The GIs sprinted to the helicopter “pretty dog-on fast,” Smith remembered with relief. They were still under fire, and now they were at least 600 pounds overweight. The Huey fishtailed.
AFTERMATH
When the men finally made it to safety, mechanics counted almost 40 holes in the aircraft. Kettles reluctantly accepted a Distinguished Service Cross for actions he didn’t think were anything special and moved on with life. He returned to Vietnam two years later, commanding the 121st Assault Helicopter Company in the delta. He retired from the Army, went back to school and helped found the aviation management degree program at Eastern Michigan University. “The Medal of Honor is not mine alone,” he said. “You’ve got 74 crewmembers out there. … It belongs to them as much as it belongs to me. “The bottom line on the whole thing is simply that those 44 did get out of there and are not a statistic on the wall in D.C. The rest of it is rather immaterial, frankly.”

“It’s a support system that I need — and the competition is pretty good.” That’s how Khrysta Kluttz described the Biggest Loser program. Kluttz and 16 other community members are nearing the halfway point of the 10-week Wiesbaden Sports and Fitness activity aimed at helping participants enhance their overall fitness while losing weight in the process. “I’ve needed to get back in shape, and I thought this would be a good stepping stone — keeping me accountable,” she said. “It’s been difficult and challenging — in a good way. It’s making us push harder than we would by ourselves.” Kluttz added that understanding how far she can push herself while staying healthy has been an added benefit of the program. “We know we have that safety net, that we won’t get hurt.” Rey Drummond, a fitness specialist and the Biggest Loser programmer, said there was such a high demand for the program that a second group was added when the program began in mid-June. While Drummond leads Team One — Team Two is led by Rachael Pecoraro, facility manager and a personal trainer. “We’ve got individuals who are
post recovering from an injury and those who just want to learn more about cardio workouts,” Drummond said. The program includes seminars, regular workouts, discounted opportunities to work with personal trainers and get massages, weighins and free attendance at Wiesbaden Fitness Center classes during the program — all featuring both a fitness and a holistic approach to encouraging a healthy routine and lifestyle. “Everyone completes a medical assessment before they come on board,” he added, saying that trainers work closely to ensure participants don’t over train and hurt themselves. “It’s high intensity training — interval training — where participants can pace themselves.” Program participants also have the opportunity to take part in structured bike rides, visit fresh fruit markets (and learn which fruits and vegetables to choose) and “a chance to tour Wiesbaden and Mainz if they haven’t already done so,” Drummond said, adding that Family and MWR resources have pulled together to support the Biggest Loser program. “They also receive a fitness binder with a cookbook, descriptions of various cardio exercises, a journal to record their feelings while taking part in the program and a calorie tracker. If they have
any questions they can contact us by email 24/7,” he said. “All of the trainers have been chipping in to help with the program,” Drummond said, likewise praising the participants for their focus and dedication. “They may have a lot of different things going on in their lives — jobs, children — but every time they get together they’re 100 percent. They come with a different mindset. They really want to make a change. “It’s a 10-week foundation program that’s hard and challenging, but not to the point where they want to give up,” he added. “It’s been great,” said Kassandra Gonzalez. “I do really well with competition, and I’m excited to win. The hardest thing has been the burpees, and the easiest is finding motivation because everyone is very supportive.” Miranda Wright said she wanted to take part “to be more fit. I like doing the Tough Mudders, but I’m not good at working out. This gets me out and has introduced me to functional fitness. … I’ve learned a lot.” “They have homework assignments and learn that fitness isn’t just challenging your body but changing your mind as well. … We empower them to be fit on their own,” said Drummond. The winner of the Biggest Loser competition will be recognized during an awards ceremony Aug. 15.

CLEP-a-thon testing event planned at Army Ed Center By Herald Union staff Service members and civilians looking to hasten their path to a college degree and save on tuition costs are invited to attend a “CLEPa-thon” event at the Wiesbaden Army Education Center, August 1 and 2. The two–day testing event hosted by the University of Maryland University College and the National Testing Center is open to anyone in the Wiesbaden military community who would like to start earning credits quickly. “Students have the opportunity to test out of required college courses by taking — and passing— an unlimited number of standardized tests in any of the college-level introductory subjects offered through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP),” said Christine Weisbecker, education services and test control officer at the Wiesbaden AEC. DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs) will also be available at the CLEP-a-thon. Appointments are not needed, so test takers can stop by Bldg. 1023 East, room 13, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day and take as many exams as their schedule allows. And, the testing opportunity is not limited to just current students. “The CLEP-a-thon is an excel-

The 90-minute tests, funded by DANTES are free to service members the first time they take each test. The exams are accepted at more than 2,900 colleges and universities in addition to UMUC. Exam results are available immediately. Civilians pay $80 per test, plus a sitting fee. While the goal of the CLEP-athon is to shorten the time it takes
for service members and civilians to earn a college degree, the event can also bring the community together, especially if some units or offices take the CLEP challenge together. For more information, contact the UMUC NTC at DSN 314-5481311, civ (0611) 143-548-1311 or e-mail ntcwiesbaden-europe@ umuc.edu. The CLEP-a-thon is open to all U.S. military members and their families, and government service civilians with a Department of Defense ID card.

Deployments not as ‘ruff’ with therapy dog By Spc. Angela Lorden Army.mil
CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait — The phone rang. A woman, Grace MacGregor, answered. “Grace, I have your dog.” The phone call was from her friend, who was also a coordinator for a rescue organization in the United States. The rescue had shut down a puppy mill in 2010. Among the dogs rescued was a small, black Scottish terrier. He lived in a cage at the unlicensed-breeding facility for five years. According to the dog’s American Kennel Club paperwork, his registered name was MacGregor. “We found it to be an omen,” Grace said. “A MacGregor dog, five years old then, and MacGregor me. He became MacGregor MacGregor.” The Scottish terrier and Grace, his handler, volunteer at the Resiliency Center and the Combat Support Hospital to promote the welfare and resiliency of service members and civilians stationed at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. “I think MacGregor is another way for the military to care for people,” Grace said. “The more people can relax and the more their life while deployed is normalized, the more they are likely to perform at their best,” Grace said. MacGregor’s transition from a rescue dog to a volunteer animal began with a chance conversation. She said, “I was talking to the Red Cross staff and I mentioned I had a dog. They said, ‘Oh, we need one out here so badly.’ You can’t really have a dog living here. People began encouraging me to try and work my way through the paperwork. So I did.”
MacGregor became part of the Army’s Human-Animal Bond Program. This American Red Cross sponsored program facilitates animal companionship for service members, patients, families and visitors. Master Sgt. Marvin Curtis, the Resiliency Center director and Master Resilience Training Program coordinator with the 1st Theater Sustainment Command, said he asked the Red Cross for permission to have MacGregor be the mascot for the Resiliency Team after seeing firsthand how important the docile dog was to service members. “The interesting part was how soothing he is to people,” Curtis said. “That goes from privates I saw to O-6’s. There’s a lot of people, whether they’re in the fight or in the rear areas that go through a lot and need support. That’s what we try to offer at the resiliency center with the Red Cross.” Grace and MacGregor began providing Soldiers and civilians the opportunity to interact with the furry companion on a weekly basis. “Early in his life he was not a loved dog,” Grace said. “Now he’s a lovedby-everybody dog.” Sgt. 1st Class Melissa Kass, a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialist with the 126th Military Police Company visited MacGregor for the first time July 1. “I think there’s something really comforting for Soldiers when they get to pet a dog,” Kass said. “There’s something about the unconditional love of a dog that eases the soul. All the stresses that go with a deployment, everything melts away. The dog doesn’t judge me for anything.” MacGregor also visits the hospital.

“With the patient’s permission, we put him up on the bed and he just snuggles down so they can scratch him, cuddle him and talk to him,” Grace said. “So many people have said when we leave, ‘Thank you. I really needed this today.’ It does make a difference.” Grace’s husband, William Ostertag, was part of her inspiration to make a difference in Soldiers’ lives. He passed away in 1999 as an Army Colonel with 28 years of service. He rests at the Arlington National Cemetery.
“Sometimes I get a little misty about it,” she said. “He was very much a commander who looked after his troops. It was one of the things I loved about him. I feel like I’m still carrying on part of his legacy.” Soldiers at Camp Arifjan are still part of her family, she said. “When I look around at these Soldiers, I see the best of America,” said Grace. “I see the Army values internalized in the Soldiers. I can come out here and I am unfailingly treated with courtesy and respect.”

MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU AIR BASE, Romania — Logisticians from the 16th Sustainment Brigade’s 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion struck a “Warhammer” blow on behalf mission readiness, forging a path to success in Saber Guardian ‘16, a multinational exercise slated to begin later this month. “Task Force Warhammer,” comprised of 18th CSSB personnel, provided essential equipment and fuel supplies to 1st Battal-

Brigade logisticians to ensure their Soldiers have the proper life support and operational equipment. “Just because we are not in a combat environment doesn’t mean the missions you complete aren’t just as important as the missions downrange,” Sgt. Alfredo Araguz of Brownsville, Texas, a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to the 1st ICTC, told his team at the conclusion of a major movement. “You should be proud of the work you are accomplishing here, as everyone in U.S. Army Europe is counting on each and every one of you to ensure mission success.”

Summertime is wise to immunize By Capt. Andreia Williamson
Vaccine-Preventable Diseases and the Vaccines that Prevent Them
Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic
It’s time to immunize and prepare children for a happy, healthy and successful school year by getting them vaccinated today. According to Army Public Health officials, all school aged children from pre-school to college need vaccines as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at various times according to their age. Most importantly, to keep your children, their friends and classmates healthy during the school year, your child needs to be vaccinated on time. Having your child vaccinated on time can help prevent disease outbreaks such as measles, chicken pox, diphtheria and whooping cough, just to name a few. Parents who choose not to vaccinate their children increase the risk of disease not only for their own children, but also for other children and adults throughout the entire community. For example, those with weakened immune systems and newborns, have a greater risk of catching the disease after being exposed, causing preventable illnesses and even death. If you are not sure if your child is up to date on their vacci-

Immunization is one of the most important things a parent can do to protect their children’s health. nations, check with your child’s doctor to be sure any vaccines required can be given to them before going back to school. Parents can also find out what vaccines their children need and when the doses should be given by reviewing the CDC’s recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule online at http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/ schedules/easy-to-read/child. html#print. If you find your child is behind or has not received one of their recommended immuni-
zations, do not worry. There is an immunization catch-up schedule to help get back on track. Getting every recommended dose of each vaccine provides children with the best protection possible while protecting our community and schools from outbreaks that can cause unnecessary illnesses and deaths. Army public health offers free tick-testing By Army Public Health Center, Provisional As the summer season swings in to full gear, Army public health officials want to ensure that Department of Defense personnel at home and abroad are aware of a free service to help combat the threat of tick-borne diseases. The Army Public Health Center (Provisional) provides a tick identification and testing service for DOD health clinics. This service, available at the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic, serves as a “first alert” for tick-bite patients and their health care providers. Although most ticks are not infected with human diseases, some ticks in the United States and here in Germany can carry
Page 14
Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and viral diseases. Army preventive medicine experts say that prompt removal of a tick is one way to reduce risk of disease transmission. Removal can be done at home or at a clinic. “When patients locate a tick on them, they should not panic and should take their time to remove the tick properly,” said Ellen Stromdahl, an entomologist with the Army Public Health Center. “If you remove attached ticks promptly, you can prevent tick-borne disease.” If you chose to remove the tick at home, Stromdahl recommends certain guidelines. “Remove the tick with tweezers,” said Stromdahl. “Do not burn it or use soap, gasoline,
Herald Union
Vaseline or other chemicals. Once the tick is removed, thoroughly cleanse the bite with alcohol and apply antibiotic ointment to the bite.” Most tick bites cause irritation and itching immediately, but Stromdahl said this does not indicate disease transmission. Finally, Stromdahl said ticks that have been removed from people should be saved for identification and testing. Military personnel and civilians stationed in Wiesbaden should place the tick in a jar or ziplock bag and bring it to the health clinic, where health care providers will forward the tick to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s lab for testing. Army public health professionals will then identify the

tick and perform disease testing. The results of identification will be reported to WAHC upon receipt of the tick, and the test results (negative and positive) will be available within a week.

K
ids and kids at heart will enjoy an active vacation in Schladming, Austria. This Alpine town is situated at the base of the Planai and Hochwurzen mountains, and while it is famous for its skiing in winter, offers many activities year-round. Besides being a prime location for hikers of all skill levels, Schladming is a great place to unwind and have a little adventure. Whether your group is seeking night-life or family-friendly entertainment, Schladming is a destination sure to please. If you didn’t make it during ski season, the summer season offers activities such as summer sledding (thrilling downhill rides on wheeled carts), downhill mountain biking, glacier hikes (bring a parka and boots, even in July), an ice castle, waterfalls and stunning views of the Alps. Shops, restaurants, and bars dot the brick-paved pedestrian mall in the center of town. In the evenings, visitors will find an array of live music, schnapps tasting and a local wine festival in early August. During the day, kids can play on the many elaborate playgrounds built into the landscape around town and outside various restaurants (a win for parents). Or take a short drive to some of the family-owned restaurants just outside of town that are located on the family’s farmland. Some of these restaurants have playgrounds that house animals such as pigs, cows, rabbits and sheep that children can pet and feed. Indoor and outdoor swimming is also available in walking distance from many hotels. For a reasonable price, families can enjoy

recreation facilities with water slides. Check with your hotel about a Summer Card, which will get you discounts for local attractions as well as free gondola rides. A hike to the Dachstein Glacier begins at the base of the gondola on the nearby city of Ramsau’s main street. A bus from Schladming picks up hikers and meanders up the mountain to the base of the gondola that makes the final journey to 8,858 feet (2700 meters) where on a clear day visitors can see across the Alps from the suspension bridge and the stairway to nothingness, then walk through a cave full of ice sculptures. This is where that jacket and boots will come in handy; it is quite cold even in summer, and the glacier can be slippery. After taking the gondola back down, it is possible to forgo part of the bus ride and hike by trail (petting friendly cows along the way) to various restaurants serving typical regional fare and of course reward yourself with a hearty wheat beer. See Through the Eyes of Lorelei
Story and Photos by Gemma McGowan Contributing writer to MilitaryinGermany.com
Would you like to see through the eyes of the Lorelei, the legendary mermaid? Head to Bornich to take in the spectacular view from high above the Rhein River. You will also have an unforgettable experience driving along the winding road to where the supposedly siren sat. The picturesque views include boats on the river, the dotting of historic towns and several beautiful castles perched above.
The History of Lorelei Lorelei was brought to life in a ballad in 1801 by German author Clemens Brentano and then later adapted by Heinrich Heine’s poem ‘Die Lorelei’. The story describes Lorelei as a siren sitting on the cliff looking over the Rhine; combing her golden hair whiling distracting the shipmen with her beauty and song; and then causing the ships to crash on the rocks on this treacherous bend in the Rhine. Today you can visit a statue of the mythical siren that is located at the end of a jetty. Other famous sirens that Lorelei makes me think about are the sirens in Homer’s book “The Odyssey”, which also caused shipmen to crash into the
rocks. It also reminds me of the modern twist on Homer’s “Odyssey” in the movie ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’.
High Above This time my journey to discover Lorelei is not along the banks of the river, but rather high above looking down like a siren myself. Though I have visited the Lorelei statue before at the jetty and traveled along the scenic road, it was such a treat taken in the beauty up high! This lookout area at top of the Lorelei rock also has everything you could possible want, including telescopes and seats, to have an incredible experience. There is also a rock carved into a chair, which I later realized its use and called it the ‘selfiechair’.
Romantic couples that want to leave a piece of their love in the area can bring a lock and attach it to the fence to symbolize their strong long-lasting love for each other. The lookout allows you to get a perfect 180-degree view of the river and see the sharp bends the boats must overtake. During the time of the Lorelei myth, there was much more of the mountain rock sticking out into the river. It was later blasted away to make less of a sharp turn.
I really love watching the boats going up and down the Rhein from this spectacular height. In the lookout area there is a restaurant that is open in the spring and summer. I will surely come back when the sun is shining and have lunch outside looking at the Rhine Valley. In addition, this area is great for hiking as well as there is an open area concert venue and you can toboggan during the summer! Directly below the lookout point, but on the other side of the river, is a restaurant and gift shop that are popular for tour buses. There you can find nice Lorelei mermaid memorabilia at the gift shop.
I loved my day visiting up high where the so-called legendary mermaid of Lorelei sat, and I guess you can say this siren called me in with her captivating beauty!
