Just in time for summer break, teens on Clay Kaserne now have an easy-to-reach place to hang out with friends or find a needed break from any post-school boredom. The Clay Kaserne Teen Center opened June 12 and is ready to entertain teens in middle and high school, providing a convenient location for teens living on the main part of the garrison. Those teens currently using the center on Hainerberg need not worry, though; it will remain open, according to Clay Kaserne Teen Center Director Karen Seitz. “I’m excited we have a facility on Clay so that the youth here have somewhere to go and have fun,” Seitz said. OCP pattern for ACUs slated for Wiesbaden AAFES this fall By Bob Reinhart
U.S. Army Garrison Natick Public Affairs
While certain bases will be receiving the new Army uniform pattern beginning in July, Soldiers in Wiesbaden will have to wait a little longer to be garbed in the new pattern. Dan Barriga, Wiesbaden Army Air Force Exchange Service general manager, said the uniforms can be expected here around midSeptember, along with most other Europe locations. “The uniforms will be released in three waves, Wiesbaden is part of the second wave release,” Barriga said. Starting then, the Operational Camouflage Pattern available for the Army Combat Uniform in the Military Clothing Sales stores should be available. The new pattern will replace the current Universal Camouflage Pattern. The UCP has been used for the past decade. The transition period for the new pattern will extend from July 1 to Sept. 30, 2019. The entire Army will be in the Operational Camouflage Pattern by Oct. 1, 2019. New Soldiers will receive ACUs with the new pattern beginning in January 2016. The Operational Camouflage Pattern will be available to the National Guard, Army See ‘Uniforms’ on page 5

For the Wiesbaden High School Class of 2015, June 5 marked the end to four years of hard work, homework and harried mornings. But it also
marked the start of the next stage of their lives. One hundred fifty-four students graduated at a commencement event held at the Kurhaus in downtown Wiesbaden June 5 amongst their friends, family and faculty.
“Over 20 years of students have graduated here,” said WHS Principal Greg Hatch. “I feel privileged to stand here in this setting. The faculty of Wiesbaden High School is proud to share tonight with our graduates. See ‘Graduates’ on page 3
Commentary Ask the commander
USAG Wiesbaden community, thank you for your comments and continued support of USAG Wiesbaden. Your comments are value-added when it comes to assessing the community’s needs for safety, awareness and most of all, appreciation. The Garrison leadership can’t be everywhere; therefore, your taking the time to send in comments helps us to be where we you are. In that, I invite you and a friend to attend our next Community Information Exchange (CIE) on June 23 at 9:30 a.m. in the Community Activity Center (or Little Italy). The CIE is an information-based exchange that allows for questions, answers and discussions about anything happening in and around the Garrison. Additionally, please use our website (www.wiesbaden.army. mil) and Facebook page to stay up to date in our community for all things Garrison. Again, thank you for your continued support as we moved forward to progress the community. Editor’s note: Have something you’d like to share with the commander? Send an ICE comment or contact the Commander’s Hotline (click the Feedback link on the garrison home page).
Closures on holidays
Anonymous said: Once again, countless hours are wasted by members of the community because no one has advertised or shared information regarding closures to key customer service organizations on a German holiday. Today, the vehicle inspection point is closed. Of course, I wouldn’t be aware of that unless I had driven down there at 6:30 a.m. (along with a host of others) to find my time had been wasted – i.e. it was closed. Is there a reason this community can’t take a repeatable approach to sharing closures on these holidays? I’m not German; I don’t know the holiday scheme. More to the point, I don’t know how the holiday will affect offices on the garrison. To me, this is just a regular Thursday. Will you please find a way to send an email to all addresses on the garrison two-three days prior that announces (in a comprehensive way) which offices and organizations will be closed due to the holiday? I believe this is a responsibility — not just a “nice to do.” Response: We apologize for your inconvenience; however, there are several means available to verify if an office is opened/closed on German and American holidays. I would remind you to check the hours of operation for offices that have a large majority of host nation employees as they will usually be closed on German and American holidays. I recommend you add both German and American holidays to your outlook calendar as a reminder to assist in alleviating time wasted while travelling to an office that may be closed. Thank you for your comment!

Crosswalk request
Anonymous said: The lack of a crosswalk between the parking area and the sign-in office at the newest installation access point on Hainerberg is a safety issue. There is a lack of crosswalks and even the lack of a walking space (sidewalk) on the opposite side of the road, forcing us to walk in the road ways. To the best of my understanding and experience, other installations provide a safe and secure location just inside of the guarded area to park and exit vehicles while walking safely to the guard booth. It seems as though this garrison has and continues to give this community a false sense of safety and security and us always falls back on the excuse of “installation transformation.” My recent issue with new access control point is one of many seemingly glaring safety

I had the tuna wrap for lunch today and it was outstanding. I asked if the tuna salad was canned or made in the kitchen. I was surprised to learn that the food and beverage manager made it himself — I want the recipe! Very tasty.

Continued from page 1 “I’m proud of each and every one of you.” Salutatorian Victoria Strunk thanked the teachers of WHS and the parents of the students who shepherded them through their tenure there in her speech, and had words of advice for her fellow graduates. “All of the students graduating tonight have very different paths in front of them,” she said. “There is no wrong direction if what you choose to do leads you to a life of happiness. Happiness is the greatest gift you can give yourself.” The guest speaker at the event, former member of the Central Intelligence Agency Valerie Plame, also offered her advice and congratulations to the graduates. “Your hard work has paid off,” she said. “Here you are today with your cap and gown and all the promise in the world. Attack life, don’t waste a minute and
don’t leave any chips on the table.” She also offered some more humorous, yet extremely important advice to those attending college next. “If you’re not a morning person, do not take morning classes,” Plame said. “And even if you are a morning person, do not take morning classes!” For the graduates, many are going on to colleges in the U.S. and abroad, others are joined the armed forces and still more are weighing their options. But according to their now-former principal, whatever they tackle they should keep the memories they’ve earned the lessons they’ve learned close. “As you move on to the next stage of your life, I urge you to think often of your most memorable teachers, the support of your parents and of the friends you’ve made,” Hatch said. “And keep this in your hearts: Once a Warrior … always a Warrior.”

Fireworks safety tips for July 4 By U.S. Army Technical Center for Explosives Safety Special to the Herald Union
Fireworks are a Fourth of July tradition. To celebrate our nation’s independence, many Americans will gather at professional fireworks events while others will choose to hold a personal pyrotechnics extravaganza in their own backyard. Have you ever wondered what makes those pretty colors when a skyrocket explodes? There are a lot of different chemicals used, but some of the most common are aluminum (produces silver and white flames and sparks), barium (green), copper (blue), lithium (red) and sodium (gold or yellow). In the air, these chemicals help create an eye-catching display. On the ground, however, they’re nothing more than explosives and pyrotechnic materials. Fireworks are classified as dangerous substances under the
Federal Hazardous Substances Act. In fact, consumer fireworks are generally considered more hazardous than military explosives. The military spends considerable resources throughout the life cycle of ammunition and explosives to ensure they’re safe and reliable. While the safety of fireworks continues to improve, many manufacturers’ standards do not achieve this same level of safety, quality and reliability. Take firecrackers, for example. Many people have probably lit 1½inch firecrackers. Were all the fuses the same length? Did they burn at the same rate? Did they sometimes fizzle out, leaving an even shorter fuse intact? In commercial firework demonstrations, have you seen low bursts or even ground bursts? Safety is very important, whether it’s a big show or backyard use of fireworks with family and friends. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates about 11,400 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for
injuries associated with fireworks in 2013. For personal use of fireworks, some generally accepted safety rules include: • Read and follow the instructions on how to use the item. • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fires. • Maintain adult supervision. • Have a designated shooter. • Do not drink while initiating fireworks. • Use eye protection when shooting fireworks and do not let any part of your body cover the fireworks. • Fireworks should only be used outdoors. • Never throw or point fireworks at another person. • Do not handle or try and relight duds. Wait 20-30 minutes, soak the duds in water and then properly dispose of them. Fireworks can liven up any Independence Day celebration, but they should always be treated with respect.

Reserve and Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps in summer 2016. Using Soldier feedback about improving the UCP, the Army in 2010 began providing the Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern, or OEFCP, to Soldiers deploying to Afghanistan. The Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center also began developing the new Operational Camouflage Pattern. The Operational Camouflage Pattern testing and evaluation effort has been described as the most comprehensive done across operating environments. Various terrains, vegetation, seasons, and times of day were studied. Though not considered a new uniform, the Operational Camouflage Pattern ACU will incorporate other design changes to the collar, pockets, knee and elbow patches and trouser waistband. Instead of the current sand color, the
Operational Camouflage Pattern will be worn with a tan 499 T-shirt and belt and coyote brown boots. Those needing special size requirements will be able to put in orders after the wave rollout, and will have plenty of time to do so before the mandatory wear date, Barriga said. Because the new pattern will replace the current UCPs and OEFCPs only as they wear out, the change is viewed as fiscally responsible. The Operational Camouflage Pattern ACUs are expected to cost Soldiers about the same as the UCP ACUs. “All enlisted Soldiers receive an annual stipend for the purchase of uniforms and accessories,” said Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey. “I myself will wait until I am issued my clothing allowance before purchasing a uniform with the
Operational Camouflage Pattern. “ I e n c o u rage all Soldiers and leaders to do the same by budgeting for a new uniform, belt, boots and T-shirts as you receive your clothing allow-
............... ance over the next two to three years.” During the transition period, Soldiers may mix and match items with either the OEFCP or the Op-
erational Camouflage Pattern. They can also wear OEFCP Flame Resistant ACUs during that time. “Presenting a professional appearance is very important to Soldiers, but we will not inconvenience or burden our troops,” Dailey said. “We will still be the most lethal fighting force the world has ever known, even if our belts don’t match for the next few years.” (Editor’s note: this is a localized version of an article originally Rein written by Bob Reinhart from U.S. Army Garrison Natick Public Affairs). When students at Wiesbaden Middle School heard about the earthquakes that hit Nepal this year, they wanted to do what they could to help. Eleven students, members of the school’s Junior National Honor Society, set to raising funds with the goal of donating it to the American Red Cross to support their relief efforts in Nepal. “We thought they needed help,” said JNHS President Joy Kim. “The kids here at Wiesbaden Middle School are really supportive.” The students decided on a chain war, a fundraiser they’d used with much success in the past. According to the JNHS Sponsor Mary Anne Allen, the fundraiser involves selling paper chain links, in this case for 25 cents, and seeing which class can build the longest chain. At that price, students at WMS purchased 5,600 chain links made of paper and donated $1,400 to the American Red Cross. “It’s incredible what you guys did,” said Wiesbaden American Red Cross Station Manager Bethany Haworth. The classes which won the chain war were that of sixth-grade teacher Kathleen Edwards, seventh-grade teacher Kellie Klaver and eight-grade teacher Todd Cook. The winning classes were treated to an ice cream party for their efforts.

Three WHS seniors complete STEM/CSI program By William B. King
5th Signal Command Public Affairs
Three Wiesbaden High School seniors were recently recognized for their participation and accomplishments in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics/Cyber Security Initiative (STEM/CSI) program, a unique partnership between 5th Signal Command and Wiesbaden High School. Col. Jimmy L. Hall Jr., commander of 5th Signal Command, and Sgt. Maj. Robert Brown, 5th Signal Command G3 sergeant major, presented achievement awards and 5th Signal Command coins to seniors Angelica Doby, Jonah Friel and Kyle Barry at the Senior and Junior Student Recognition & Celebration June 3 at WHS. During the yearlong STEM/CSI program, students learn in the classroom and get hands-on training at 5th Signal Command in design, implementation and management of integral computer hardware, software, telecommunication devices, tactical and strategic local and wide area information networks (LAN & WAN), programming languages and encryption security policy and procedures. Chief Warrant Officer 5 Eugene Gardner, 5th Signal Command senior
signal warrant officer and manager of the STEM/CSI program, said the program provides incredible opportunities for the students. “It is an opportunity of a lifetime to experience and learn from on-the-job training in a real working environment,” Gardner said. He said 5th Signal Command also benefits through the teaching and personal interactions with the students, and by building trust and friendship between the command and students, parents and the high school. “We have the rare opportunity to be part of their education in the very complex fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Gardner said. Doby, who will be a freshman at University of West Florida in the fall studying cyber and graphic design, said the STEM/CSI program provided her with an insight into information technology and security and their related field of work. “It was a great experience that I could’ve never received without the help of STEM. The 5th Signal Soldiers were very knowledgeable and made the program interesting,” Doby said. The STEM/CSI program instructors,

Arts and Crafts Center offers numerous activities Story and photos by Karl Weisel

While the great outdoors beckon during the summer months, don’t forget that there are plenty of ways to combine inside and outside recreation. The staff members of Wiesbaden Arts and Crafts hope to meld the scenic beauty of the surrounding countryside with the creative spirit of painting the natural world in their “Plein Air” painting program. “One of the most exciting things for this summer at Wiesbaden Arts and Crafts is that we’ll be getting a new art teacher,” said Erik Kraemer, the center’s manager. “With our Plein Air program we want to go out in groups to get out in nature and paint.” With a new highly qualified art teacher soon to be on board, the center will also be able to offer children’s art classes through the SKIES Unlimited program (Child, Youth and School Services’ School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills). Kraemer said another possible future program is an evening of painting and wine — to be held in one of the community’s other facilities such as the Wiesbaden Entertainment Center or

Without enough sleep, everyone is at increased risk for: • Motor vehicle accidents • Increased obesity, diabetes and heart problems • Increased risk for psychiatric conditions including depression and substance abuse Numerous studies have shown that not getting enough sleep may lead a person to: • React slower • Have trouble focusing and paying attention • Get easily confused • Have trouble remembering new information • Get stressed more easily • Make more mistakes and make poor judgments When Soldiers do not get enough sleep, their ability to judge is diminished. Diminished judgment causes bad tactical decisions, which leads to critical errors such as falling asleep at the wheel, not recognizing a threat or reacting too slowly to it. Weight gain is another problem. A 2008 study in the “Sleep Journal” showed
that people with short sleep times had gained weight and increased their body fat. Lack of sleep has a negative effect on hormones that tell a person when to eat and when to stop eating, leading to a person overeating. The good news is behavior changes can resolve sleep problems. Proper sleep practices that promote optimal sleep duration and quality are important for everyone. A person needs at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. The National Sleep Foundation recommends these sleep tips: • Stick to a sleep schedule. As best as possible, go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. • Reset your sleep patterns by establishing a wind-down routine. Plan time to unwind. Relax with meditation, reading or listening to soothing music. It will help cue your body and mind begin into recognizing when it is time to sleep. • Have a dark, quiet, comfortable and cool sleeping environment. Control light, noise and temperature to promote restful sleep. Do not sleep in areas where there is regular activity. Reduce exposure to noise and light by using earplugs, blackout shades or a sleep mask. • Use your bed only for sleeping, not for other activities such as reading, watching TV, playing computer games or surfing the web. Turn off all electronic devices. • Avoid large meals two to three hours
before bedtime. A large meal can cause indigestion that interferes with sleep. • Avoid caffeine (coffee, colas, chocolate or teas) and nicotine two to three hours before sleeping. These stimulants can cause a person not to sleep for up to eight hours. • Avoid alcoholic drinks before bed. While many people think a drink or two will help them fall asleep, studies have shown that alcohol disrupts sleep. •Avoid medicines that delay or disrupt your sleep. Some medications, such as heart, blood pressure, asthma medications, over-the-counter medications and herbal remedies for coughs, colds or allergies can disrupt sleep patterns. • Do not exercise at least three hours before bedtime. Exercise makes a person more alert and raises the body temperature, which makes it harder to fall asleep. • Do not lie in bed awake. If you find yourself still awake after lying in bed for more than 20 minutes, get up and do something relaxing (like reading or listening to music) until you feel sleepy. • Turn the bedroom clock around backwards if you are clock-watcher who wakes up periodically to see how much time it is before having to get up. • If you are having trouble sleeping after using the above tips, talk with your doctor. Your physician may have other methods to help you to get enough sleep or refer you to a provider for sleep disorders.
Tips for Soldiers
• Sleep whenever possible. Take naps that add up to seven to eight hours for each 24-hour period in order to sustain alertness and performance. • Avoid using over-the-counter “sleep aids,” which leave one groggy but do not induce actual sleep.
Tips for Leaders
If Soldiers are struggling to stay awake, then their ability to function is already impaired. Consider a “resupply” of sleep just as important as ammunition, food and water. Provide time for quality sleep in the operation plans. Develop a unit sleep management program that gives Soldiers at least six and preferably seven to eight hours to sleep out of every 24. Get ready to take on your day by getting a good quality sleep. It benefits everyone and improves military readiness.

mensions that make up a human being and seeks to develop the total person concept. This includes enhancing spiritual fitness through reflection and practice of a lifestyle based on personal qualities needed to sustain one during times of stress, hardship and tragedy.” Spirituality is not static; it changes and (hopefully) deepens and matures as we get older. In 1981, Dr. James W. Fowler, a developmental psychologist at Emory University and United Methodist Minister, published “Stages of Faith: The Psychology of Human Development and the Quest for Meaning.” In this book, Fowler proposed that people go through phases in their spiritual development — the faith of a child is different from the faith of an adult, for instance. During the course of his research, Dr. Fowler interviewed Jews, Catholics, Protestants, agnostics and atheists. He suggested that there are six stages of faith, starting with zero (in infancy). According to Dr. Fowler, very few people achieve the highest level, stage six, but he suggests that individuals such as Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi might be examples of those who do. Most of us are somewhere in the middle. But we do not have to stay at the same stage through life. Spiritual growth will be different for each person — what works for one person may not work for another — but activities such as belonging to a worship community, prayer and meditation, and deliberate study of any sacred texts from your own tradition can help contribute to growth. Many people also express their spirituality through volunteerism. You might get an idea of your own level of spiritual fitness from a source such as the “Spiritual Dimension” on the GlobalAssessment Tool, or GAT. Soldiers have to take the GAT each year. But there are many ways to gauge your spiritual resilience. The “Spiritual Fitness Inventory” Technical Guide 360 available from the U.S. Army Public Health Command Spiritual Health website is another tool. Whenever you step on the scale or monitor your exercise, you are taking stock of your health. Shouldn’t your spiritual health be just as important?

After a humiliating command performance at Lincoln Center, the Barden Bellas enter an international competition that no American group has ever won in order to regain their status and right to perform.
Pitch Perfect 2 — The Bellas are back, and they are better than ever. After being humiliated in front of none other than the President of the United States of America, the Bellas are taken out of the Aca-Circuit. In order to clear their name and regain their status, the Bellas take on a seemingly impossible task: winning an International competition no American team has ever won. In order to accomplish this monumental task, they need to strengthen the bonds of friendship and sisterhood, and blow away the competition with their amazing aca-magic! With all new friends and old rivals tagging along for the trip, the Bellas can hopefully accomplish their dreams once again. Inside Out — Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. Max — A precision-trained military dog, Max serves on the frontlines in Afghanistan alongside his handler, U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott. But when things go terribly wrong on maneuvers, Kyle is mortally wounded and Max, traumatized by the loss of his best friend, is unable to remain in service. Shipped stateside, the only human he seems willing to connect with is Kyle’s teenage brother, Justin, so Max is adopted by Kyle’s family, essentially saving his life. But Justin has issues of his own, such as living up to his father’s expectations for him; he isn’t interested in taking responsibility for his brother’s troubled dog. However, Max may be Justin’s only chance to discover what really happened to his brother that day on the front, and with the help of a tough-talking young teen, Carmen, who has a way with dogs, Justin begins to appreciate his canine companion. Justin’s growing trust in Max helps the four-legged veteran revert back to his heroic self, and as the pair race against time to unravel the mystery, they find more excitement—and danger—than they bargained for. But they each might also find an unlikely new best friend…in each other.

Students explore art of graffiti By Shayna Brouker U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office
Graffiti artist Rahmann “Statik” Barnes is out to show the world graffiti isn’t vandalism. Statik, as he goes by, was once arrested for vandalism while painting a public mural and has since made it his mission to legitimize the craft. With classical training from the American Academy of Art, his own graphic arts company, more than 200 public murals to his name and a passion for mentoring young artists, the Chicago native comes to Mainz-Kastel, Germany, every year for an international collaboration called Meeting of Styles. This year the theme was “Mind Over Matter.”

Story and photos by Bret Helenius The first thing you notice about Klaus Hartmann is his marquee chef mustache and goatee. It is what you would expect from one of the Three Musketeers, curled at the ends perfectly. Right off the bat, you think to yourself “this guy knows his stuff.” It doesn’t hurt that he is tall in stature and has the compulsory chef’s belly. In one of my favorite restaurants, there is a sign that says “Don’t trust a skinny chef.” This is one of the reasons I trust Klaus unconditionally. Chef Klaus has been beating schnitzel senseless and terrorizing eggs for over 35 years in such highly regarded restaurants such as the Hotel Post in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Born in Baden-Württemberg, he now calls Ramstein home and spends time in Karlsruhe as well. As I sat down with Klaus, the sound of a Porsche 911 thunders by and Klaus remarks “Porsche’s are great, but there is nothing like the sound of a 380 cubic inch V-8 Chevy.” “Cooking with Klaus” is a roving cooking class that Chef Klaus brings to the homes of wanna-be chefs and weekend warriors of the griddle who are interested in learning the secrets from the master. I attended a class with my wife and four other participants in the kitchen of a friend hoping to touch up my amateur skills. As he dons his black chef’s jacket, he whips out a beautiful knife. “There are a number of great knife makers here in Germany, but the best knives come from Japan. There are masters that will only produce a handful of knives a month due to the extreme perfection in the finished product.” A chef’s knife can be related to that of a Samurai’s sword; it is part of them. We were going to learn how to make German standards such as Spätzle, traditional German Potato Salad, Schnitzel and Apple Strudel. I knew this would be a great night once the Ries-
ling started flowing. Klaus likes to have his pupils work hands-on, so we were right in there cutting potatoes and beating eggs. Hand-made Spätzle was a crowd pleaser. It is such a simple recipe (eggs, flour, salt, nutmeg and white pepper) but when homemade, it is delicious. One of the keys is to place the dough on a small flat wooden board, specially made for Spätzle, and shave it off with fast slicing motions so it falls into the boiling water and forms the right random shapes. Once cooked, move it into icy water to firm and then pan fry in a non-stick pan with butter until slightly brown. As the night rolled on, we heard about stories from Klaus’ Harley Davidson biker club days but as Klaus says “I was in the club for brotherhood and to ride. I’m too old for that now.” The schnitzel, which was made from veal, melted in your mouth. Klaus says, don’t cook it took long or it will dry out and become rubber. “I don’t understand why someone would make a breaded schnitzel and then cover it in gravy. You just make it soggy after taking the time to make it nice and crispy.”
the cooking class was getting to eat what we learned about and it was nothing short of awesome. Everything had the right little hint of taste and texture, which made me realize when I usually cook, I am missing something. The “Cooking with Klaus” class was quite enjoyable and gave me something to shoot for in my own kitchen. Klaus Hartmann focuses his classes on German food for foreigners who want to learn the tricks of the trade. If you are interested in setting up a cooking class with Klaus, he can be found on facebook at www.facebook.com/CookingWithKlaus or via email at CookingwithKlaus@web.de
Germany is famous for Apple Strudel and has always been one of my favorites, so when I heard we were going to make it from scratch, I was ready. Making the dough from scratch is a must. Klaus likes to include raisins in his recipe, but the recipe varies from region to region. When asked if he prefers cream or vanilla ice cream, he shrugged and said “I like them both!” One of the bonuses of
