After the ceremony, Edwards, an aviation operations specialist with Company Echo, 1-214th Aviation Regiment, said that the moment was special for him as he approaches the one-year-mark of his Army career and reminded us of why we are celebrating today. “Being a Soldier means being able to hold yourself at a level not many people can. Not many people can say ‘I am a U.S. Soldier.’”

It wouldn’t be so bad being outside all day except that it gets as hot outside, and my babies still nap and they sleep best in their own beds. I am requesting that rolladen shutters be installed to help block out the heat like both Newman Village and the German locals have. Thank you for taking this issue into consideration. Response from DPW Housing: You’ll be happy to know there is currently a project to have rolladen shutters installed in bedroom windows. However, from the initiation of a project to completion can take several months or longer. In the mean time we recommend using curtains. Keep the windows and curtains closed during day time to avoid letting the hot air come inside. Once the sun sets and the air gets cooler,

Dog park request

Anonymous said: A dog park/dog run is needed on Clay Kaserne for all the apartment tenants. The field next to the old south gate and the tennis courts/roller rink would be the perfect place. Response from the Directorate of Public Works: Thank you for your inquiry. DPW Master Planning division has identified three potential locations for creating a dog park for the community on Clay Kaserne. One of them is the location that you have recommended. The other two are adjacent to the tennis courts at the intersection of Heerstrasse and Weberstrasse, and adjacent to the Newman Village Sports Field. However, due to resource limitations and garrison infrastructure maintenance priorities, we are unable to create a dog park at this time.

Secretary of the Army earns his Army birthday cake in Poland By 1st Lt. Hilary Klotz 16th Sustainment Brigade

TORUN, Poland — Eric Fanning, the 22nd Secretary of the Army, visited the Knights Brigade, June 14, to help celebrate the Army’s 241st birthday and learn the many ways the 16th Sustainment Brigade is “Sustaining a Strong Europe.” The Knights Brigade had been sharing #EarnYourCake clips, a campaign encouraged by Sgt. Maj of the Army Daniel Dailey, and the secretary of the Army, who decided to make an impromptu visit and verify that 16th

Sustainment Brigade was Army Strong. Fanning was given a tour of Logistical Support Area Warhammer, which houses a ration break point, water supply point, and fuel system supply point supporting all combat units participating in Anakonda 16. Fanning also showed off his driving skills by loading a 20-ft container onto a trailer with a rough terrain container handler, also known as a RTCH with the help of Soldiers from 240th Quartermaster Company. “It was an honor to host Secretary of the Army, Eric Fanning,” said Col.

Michelle M.T. Letcher, brigade commander for 16th Sust. Bde. “His engaged leadership during the visit inspired young leaders and allowed the brigade an opportunity to explain our diverse mission set.” During his tour, junior leaders in the brigade briefed Fanning. “I was given the opportunity to share my experiences building our fuel capabilities with our Allies through interoperability of our equipment,” said Spc. Juan Gonzalez, a motor vehicle operator in 515th Transportation Company. “I would never imagine myself briefing

For almost 20 years, students at Wiesbaden High School have started the next phase of their lives in the Wiesbaden Kurhaus, and recently 117 more of them took the next step of their journeys. The students’ four years of hard work culminated in a commencement ceremony June 12, with family, friends and other guests in attendance. “We are proud of each and every one of you,” said Greg Hatch, WHS principal. “As you turn the page (on your time here), I urge you to remember the teachers who supported you … your parents, and the friendships you’ve made.” Class of 2016 Salutatorian Claire Torza, has attended three high schools over the last four years, and has only been a student at WHS this year. During her speech, she said as a military dependent her least favorite question became “Where are you from?” Her time at WHS helped change that. “Thank you Wiesbaden, for making me feel at home,” she said. For a community whose students are almost entirely transient, “home” can become a relative term, according to the class’s valedictorian, Sophie Parker. In fact, only four of the Class of 2016 students have been a part of it since kindergarten. “Our community is not based on geography,” Parker said, “but on our parents’ decision to serve their country.” The guest speaker at the event, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Commander Col. Todd J. Fish, began by congratulating the students and emphasizing the various courses their lives will take from here. “It’s exciting to think about the many paths ahead of you,” Fish said. “Some of you will be going to college, some may join the workforce immediately, while others may choose to immediately join one of our fine military services. I recommend the Army, personally.” Fish emphasized that the transitions the students have faced, and the challenges they’ve encountered, are assets the students will take with them into whatever direction they choose to follow. “I have one last piece of advice for you,” he continued. “Stay the course. You may make mistakes, or stumble, but don’t let that stop you.” The class valedictorian echoed remarks by Fish, saying their status as the children of military members has equipped them in ways their civilian counterparts could only wish for. “You’ve experienced nothing but change in your lives,” Parker said. “You’re uniquely qualified to handle whatever life throws at you. Class of 2016, we are ready to face anything.”

Most striking among the changes, which go live on the Army’s birthday, June 14, is the implementation of a “responsive grid” design. “The idea of a responsive website is that it displays correctly on every device, including smartphones, tablets, and a variety of browsers,” said Zack Kevit, the Army.mil project manager. “All of the design decisions, the layout decisions, the coding decisions, and the framework we use to display the content, has been driven by the goal to make the site more mobile-friendly — because that’s the direction our audience is moving.” About 40 percent of the site’s visitors now come from mobile devices. Treat fireworks with respect By U.S. Army Technical Center for Explosives Safety Special to the Herald Union

Fireworks are a Fourth of July tradition. To celebrate our nation’s independence, many Americans will gather at professional fireworks events while others will choose to hold a personal pyrotechnics extravaganza in their own backyard. Have you ever wondered what makes those pretty colors when a skyrocket explodes? There are a lot of different chemicals used, but some of the most common are aluminum (produces silver and white flames and sparks), barium (green), copper (blue), lithium (red) and sodium (gold or yellow). In the air, these chemicals help create an eye-catching display. On the ground, however, they’re nothing more than explosives and pyrotechnic materials. Fireworks are classified as dangerous substances under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. In fact, consumer fireworks are generally considered more hazardous than military explosives. The military spends considerable resources throughout the life cycle of ammunition and explosives to ensure they’re safe and reliable. While the safety of fireworks continues to improve, many manufacturers’ standards do not achieve this same level of safety, quality and reliability. Take firecrackers, for example. Many people have probably lit 1 ½-inch firecrackers. Were

all the fuses the same length? Did they burn at the same rate? Did they sometimes fizzle out, leaving an even shorter fuse intact? In commercial fireworks demonstrations, have you seen low bursts or even ground bursts? Safety is very important, whether it’s a big show or backyard use of fireworks with family and friends. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that about 11,400 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with fireworks in 2013. For personal use of fireworks, some generally accepted safety rules include: • Read and follow the instructions on how to use the item. • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fires. • Maintain adult supervision. • Have a designated shooter. • Do not drink while initiating fireworks. • Use eye protection when shooting fireworks, and do not let any part of your body cover the fireworks. • Fireworks should only be used outdoors. • Never throw or point fireworks at another person. • Do not handle or try and relight duds. Wait 20-30 minutes, soak the duds in water and then properly dispose of them. Fireworks can liven up any Independence Day celebration, but they should always be treated with respect.

National Safety Month A message from your Army leaders

June 2016 After nearly a decade of steady decline, on-and off-duty fatalities are on the rise across the Total Force. Soldiers and Army Civilians at every level must increase their awareness of safety issues and apply measures to minimize both on-and off-duty accidents. Senior leadership put forth a call to action earlier this year and the number of accidents stabilized. This indicates that leadership efforts and those of Soldiers and Civilians taking care of their teammates at all levels must continue to combat preventable loss. We need everyone to redouble those efforts throughout the summer months — historically the most critical time of year when off-duty accidents occur. The Army safety team provides safety and risk management expertise to preserve readiness through the prevention of accidents that result in loss of our vital resources — our Soldiers, Civilians, and Families. During our annual observance of National Safety Month, use the Fiscal Year 2016 (FY16) Army Safety and Occupational Health Objectives to refocus and target your safety programs to known danger challenge areas, most notably motorcycle mishaps due to rider inexperience and indiscipline. Our long-term goal is to help eliminate preventable motorcycle accidents through the establishment of Army-wide Motorcycle Mentorship Programs (MMPs). This emphasis has proven invaluable in reducing motorcycle accidents and losses at participating installations. More information on MMPs, the remaining FY16 safety objectives, and a full multimedia campaign in support of National Safety Month are available online at the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center at safety.army.mil. A key component to reduce loss to injuries and loss of life is to communicate relevant risk management information from leaders to our Soldiers, Civilians, and Families. We are confident that an engagement strategy, coupled with proactive and adaptive risk management measures, ensures safety and buttresses overall readiness for the Total Army Team. Thank you for what you do every day in this complex environment to keep our Soldiers, Civilians and Families safe. Army Safe is Army Strong!

Festival offers 5 days of fun

The Wiesbaden Family and MWR German-American Friendship Festival on Hainerberg is a family-friendly event with food, entertainment and rides. Story and photos by Karl Weisel

Wiesbaden Family and MWR Marketing

“We work very hard to make this a family festival.” That’s how Wiesbaden Family and MWR Special Events Manager Joe Harris described the upcoming 2016 GermanAmerican Friendship Festival. Featuring five entertainment-packed days of friendship and fun, Harris said this year’s fest offers something for everyone. “We always try to change up the rides every year, and this year we’ll have a roller coaster, giant swings and a Ferris wheel,” among a host of other amusements. “Americans can bring their German neighbors (or people can come on their own), and hopefully the fest will play a role in building lasting friendships,” Harris said. Scheduled to be held in the former shopping center in Hainerberg Housing June 30 through July 4, the fest welcomes everyone daily from noon to midnight. A wide range of live and DJ music from classic rock to rockabilly, reggae to old school funk and country is slated for all five days. The fest concludes with a spectacular fireworks display on July Fourth in celebration of the United States of America’s 240th birthday. “This year the beer garden will be larger than last year,” Harris said. Food and drink specialties will include traditional American fare — hamburgers, cheeseburgers, pizza, corn dogs, ribs, chili, chicken tenders, margaritas, daiquiris and tacos. International fest food offerings include European specialties — wursts, Italian pizzas, garlic bread — and a rich assortment of sweet treats such as cotton candy, ice cream, slushies and more.

“Due to the fact that it’s five days this year, we’ve really packed in the entertainment, amusements and other offerings,” Harris said. “The close-out, of course, is the big Fourth of July celebration with fireworks.” Everyone attending the fest is encouraged to use public transportation or to walk, Harris added, explaining that no parking will be available at the fest site or in Hainerberg Housing. “Visitors can take the bus to the Berliner Strasse bus stop and enter through the pedestrian gate,” Harris said. “People who decide to drive should follow signs to off-post parking locations and then likewise enter through the pedestrian gate.” Harris added that no large bags, coolers, backpacks, bottles or pets will be allowed on the fest grounds. There will also be a required bag check at the two access points. A special Family Day will be featured on Thursday, June 30, with 50 percent off all rides and games. A free soda will be available that day with the purchase of a meal at Family and MWR food booths. Organizers said that in addition to the entertainment, amusements and culinary offerings, visitors can also enjoy military and civilian static displays. “The German-American Friendship Fest is the garrison’s opportunity to open our doors and offer some American hospitality to our German neighbors and friends,” said Col. Todd J. Fish, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden commander. “This is our chance to say ‘Danke Schön’” to the city of Wiesbaden and celebrate a friendship that has grown over many decades and we hope will continue well into the future.” For more information go to wiesbaden.armymwr.com or check out Wiesbaden Family and MWR on Facebook.

By Sgt. Shannon S. Ball Joint Task Force Guantanamo Public Affairs

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba — Joint Task Force Guantanamo troopers got the opportunity to showcase their skills as Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey visited U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay for the first time in Cuba, to attend the 241st Army Birthday Ball, tour various JTF GTMO and NSGB facilities and speak with troopers, June 11 and 12. “I got to experience everything from my reception to the time I traveled around to see all the great missions that our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen are doing across the island,” said Dailey. “It has been a great opportunity for them to really showcase their professionalism.” Dailey visited with service members from all branches of the military as part of his tour of JTF GTMO. U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Kelley Yang, a JTF GTMO Trooper, joined several Soldiers for lunch with the sergeant major of the Army. We are all part of the same family at JTF GTMO, said Yang. The Navy, Army, Coast Guard and Air Force all work together every day to complete the mission here. During a luncheon with junior enlisted Troopers, Dailey answered questions and

got feedback on current and possible future policies for the Army. Troopers asked Dailey questions ranging from education to changes in promotion requirements. “We are working a lot of policies as always in the United States Army, but some of the most recent that we are working that are going to affect the Soldiers that I am really excited about is Army University,” said Dailey. “It is truly going to give us the ability to give our Soldiers academic equivalent credit for the work that they do and their institutional training, as well as their technical training. We’re working on accrediting them so they have a future for job opportunities in those technical skills once they get out of the Army.” Command Sgt. Maj. James Hummel, the command sergeant major for the Joint Detention Group, headed the JTF GTMO tour for Dailey along with the Joint Visitors Group. “He met with 600 plus Soldiers and Troopers at their work places and throughout Joint Task Force Guantanamo, fielding countless questions ranging from future force structure, Noncommissioned Officers Education System, physical training and quality of life issues,” said Hummel. “He met with all levels of the task force and took the time to answer

every question asked of him. He even promoted a Soldier to private first class, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Solider and the others who witnessed it.” Not only did Dailey tour JTF GTMO facilities and work spaces, he also toured the Troopers’ housing and living areas, including the Gold Hill and the Camp America Housing Units. “We got to get barracks here if this is going to endure,” Dailey said. “That is what we need. Our Soldiers are around the world, all over the globe, doing tough missions, just like the Soldiers here in Guantanamo Bay. Their mission is a critical part of our success as the Army.” Troopers are still commenting about how much they appreciated him visiting JTF GTMO and remain impressed with how he was engaging with them, said Hummel. “My hope is that, at every level, we follow his example of engaging Soldiers in the down to earth fashion he demonstrated, talk with them and listen to their concerns as the Soldier is our most important asset,” said Hummel. “On behalf of all the Soldiers and troopers, I thank the sergeant major of the Army for spending time visiting with the Soldiers. His message of ‘Readiness’ is burning strong in each one of us.”

The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning for all of Europe. Military members and their families should stay informed as they make travel plans. By U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs The borders between Germany and France will see increased border security checks in conjunction with the 2016 European soccer championship, which began June 10. Due to the present security situation in France and an expected strong influx of soccer fans from all over Europe, German Federal Police will increase their border policing as part of required additional security measures. According to the U.S. Department of State website, “France will host the European Soccer Championship from June 10 to July 10. Euro Cup stadiums, fan zones, and unaffiliated entertainment venues broadcasting the tournaments in France and across Europe represent potential targets for terrorists, as do other large-scale sporting events and public gathering places throughout Europe. France has extended its state of emergency through July 26 to cover the period of the soccer championship, as well as the Tour de France cycling race which will be held from July 2 to 24.” German Federal Police and their French counterparts will establish various check points at German-French border crossings, including trains, to screen for suspicious persons traveling into France. The German Federal Police emphasized that U.S. military affiliated personnel should carry their passports with them when crossing borders into France to identify themselves and help prevent delays. The website also provides the flowing recommendations for U.S. citizens: • Exercise vigilance when in public places or using mass transportation. • Be aware of immediate surroundings and avoid crowded places. • Follow the instructions of local authorities, especially in an emergency. • Monitor media and local event information sources and factor updated information into your travel plans and activities. • Be prepared for additional security screening and unexpected disruptions. • Stay in touch with your family, have a plan if you are separated and ensure they know how to reach you in the event of an emergency. Baby your baby: Summer safety for kids By Alexandra Snyder

Fort Belvoir Community Hospital Public Affairs

Summer is right around the corner, which means safety should be a top priority for everyone, especially parents with small children. Miguel Serra, supervisory medic and operations manager at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, said emergency personnel often respond to events that are avoidable. For example, he said, paramedics and other first responders will respond to children who have overheated in unattended vehicles — a mistake that can cost a life. “A car parked in direct sunlight can reach 131 to 171 degrees in 15 minutes,” he said. “On average, 37 children die in hot cars each year. Some parents think it’s okay to leave a child because the errand is only going to take a few minutes. But, even that amount of time is too long for a child or animal. This type of

death is 100 percent preventable.” Parents should also be mindful of the frequency of injuries that occur around the water, he added, and make sure to take the proper precautions. Children should wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while on boats, around open bodies of water, or when participating in water sports, he said. “Swimming aids such as water wings and noodles are fun toys for kids, but they should never be used in place of an approved life jacket,” Serra said. “Adults should always monitor any children in their care while they’re in the pool or water. Accidents can happen in a second and, in water-related incidents, those seconds really matter.” Lia Anderson, a clinical nurse specialist at Belvoir Hospital, said parents should know basic life-saving skills, should an accident occur. “Parents have a million things to do, but learning

CPR should be on the top of the list,” said Anderson, who noted that many military hospitals and fire stations offer CPR classes for free. Additionally, healthcare providers should be aware those requiring renewal or retraining of American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support are no longer able to challenge or “test out,” effective immediately, according to new guideline updates. The AHA states, “Students cannot challenge a course until two years after the Guidelines Update, or before November 2017.” Those requiring renewal during this mandated period will be required to attend classroom offerings. “Staying up-to-date on Basic Life Support is so important,” Anderson said. “With time, requirements can change, skills can get dulled. But when you’re providing life support care, you’re working on someone’s loved one. It’s important to be competent and sure in that care setting every single time.”

IACH, Fort Knox monitor mosquitos through summer By Rachael Tolliver

Ireland Army Community Hospital Public Affairs

Ireland Army Community Hospital’s Preventive Medicine Services, which includes the Environmental Health Department, started capturing mosquitos for testing in May and will continue to trap them throughout the summer. Lt. Gildelbrandt Martinez III, the chief of environmental health for Fort Knox, said the mission of EH is to help identify potential disease outbreaks, such as those in food, water and arthropods, and enact preventative measures so the Fort Knox community and local area can remain a safe place to live and work. And with the spread of the Zika virus in some places in the world, and the onset of summer, Martinez and his staff are on the hunt for mosquitos. “I am setting up different traps to collect a variety of species of mosquitos — different mosquitos breed in different environments,” he explained. “Some only bite at night and some only bite during the day. Aedes aegypti and Ades albopictus mosquitos carry the Zika virus, they are day-biting mosquitos, and are container breeders meaning they will breed in tree trunks, tires, gutter, cups — anything that is container size and holds water.” He said that in May the EHD started a program to weekly track mosquitos. The results can help provide important predictive indicators for the potential transmission of mosquito borne diseases. He explained that the trapping sites selected included areas around neighborhoods and schools located on Fort Knox. Traps are set twice weekly using CDC light traps and a gravid traps — traps that capture night biting and Culex mosquitos. In the first one a light is used to attract them, and the gravid traps are a container of water with a trap over it to attract them. Once specimens are collected they are identified and shipped to Preventative Health Command. But the mosquitos that spread Zika, known as the Ades aegypti and the Ades albopictus, are day biting mosquitos and require different tracking methods. “The OVICUPS with velvet strips inside catch the eggs of the mosquitos that carry Zika,” Martinez

explained. “Those cups simulate a breeding environment and once they lay their eggs, we come back and collect the strips and send them off for testing. In that way we can tell what the population of that species of mosquito is and then determine the best course of action to eliminate breeding sites for that species.” He added that people can help reduce the habitat in which mosquitos live by turning over unused flower pots, and properly dispose of item like cans, buckets, bottles and barrels so they don’t hold water in which the mosquitos can breed. Martinez said that he works with Mike Brandenburg, chief of the Fort Knox’s Natural Resources Branch, to identify areas that might have a high concentration of mosquitos so they can try, when possible, to eliminate the habitat. “Mosquitos are part of the environment in Kentucky during the warm months of the year, especially from sunset to sunrise daily,” Brandenburg explained. “Mowing in cantonment and housing areas helps (to eliminate habitats) as well as eliminating standing water in areas, to the extent practical. Realize that very small depressions can be larvae habitat so eliminating all of them if impossible (helps). Much depends on the frequency, duration and volume of precipitation.” Brandenburg said Zika has not been identified in our area in mosquitos. But there are five cases in Kentucky and seven in Indiana, all travel related, for example travel to areas in central or South America, where Zika has been transmitted by mosquitos. Martinez said that BG Sentinel traps capture mosquitos that carry Zika — and EH will soon be getting those to use on Fort Knox. In preparation for the mosquito program, Martinez said there have been entomologist with EH during the last few weeks. “Since there isn’t an entomologist on this installation, I reached back to PHC about four months ago and asked the entomologist to come down to help train and refresh the EH section in entomologist surveillance and identification,” he said. According to the CDC website, once a person has been infected he or she is likely to be protected from

But Brandenburg and Martinez both say that area residents should take precautions against mosquito bites and survey their yards and patios for areas that might make good habitats because of standing water. Other precautions include: • Using an insect repellent — but be sure to follow the labeled precautions. After returning indoors and before eating, use soap and water to wash skin that has been treated with insect repellent. • Wear clothing that covers hands, arms, legs, and other exposed skin. Wear hats with mosquito netting to protect the face and neck. Wear socks that cover the ankles and lower legs, • When outdoors, use sunscreen in conjunction with insect repellent For more questions about Zika please see the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/zika/geo/united-states.html.

Independence Day: Resurgence — We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction. © 2016 Universal/ Photo courtesy of Movieweb.com

Central Intelligence — The story follows a one-time bullied geek, Bob, who grew up to be a lethal CIA agent (Dwayne Johnson), coming home for his high school reunion. Claiming to be on a top-secret case, he enlists the help of former “big man on campus,” Calvin (Kevin Hart), now an accountant who misses his glory days. But before the staid numbers-cruncher realizes what he’s getting into, it’s too late to get out, as his increasingly unpredictable new friend drags him through a world of shoot-outs, double-crosses and espionage that could get them both killed in more ways than Calvin can count.

remarks. A moment of silence was observed before each Pride event to honor those harmed or killed during the recent tragedy at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The observance, hosted by Wiesbaden’s Community of Equal Opportunity Advisors, featured guest speaker Lt. Col. (retired) Joseph Cox who served for 23 years in the military through the initiation and repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” U.S. policy on gays in the military. During his remarks, Cox spoke about what it is like to be a gay service member, he highlighted the history and struggles of the LGBT movement, and shared stories about several male and female servicemembers whose careers were affected by DADT. “Throughout much of our history, being identified as gay would put you at risk socially, professionally, and legally,” said Cox. Gay service members expect to be held to the same standard as every other servicemember he said. “If you’re gay, be the best you can be. Don’t let other people’s ignorance determine your actions,” he said. “Your technical and tactical competence and total professionalism will carry more weight than 100 court cases.” The repeal of DADT in September of 2011 marked a significant turning point for the LGB community who could now serve in the military openly. “We no longer had to hide in the shadows, fearful that someone could destroy our lives based on rumors and innuendo,” he added. The overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act in 2015 further acknowledged that homosexuals deserve the same right to marriage and happiness. The Status of Forces Agreement, or SOFA, policies as they apply to LGBT service members overseas were also clarified during the event. “SOFA status can be granted to same-sex spouses in Germany,” confirmed Skip Nollenberger, attorney with the Wiesbaden Legal Center. “A valid marriage, is now a valid marriage,” he said. Representatives from various other organizations provided information and supported the event to include; the Wiesbaden Library, Military Family Life Consultants, Army Public Health Nurse, the Arts and Crafts Center and the Germany chapter of OutServe, a worldwide organization providing support and resources to LGBT service members. The weekend following the observance, more than 300 runners and walkers also celebrated Pride Month during the third annual Family and MWR 5k Color Run on Clay Kaserne, June 18. Having an opportunity in Wiesbaden to support the LGBT community was important to participants like Karen Beard. “It’s for a good cause, especially after what happened last week in Orlando. We were going to do the run before [the Pulse Nightclub tragedy], but we’re even more inspired now,” Beard said after the event. Pechie also noted the significance of the events this year and the progress the Army is making. “The [Pride] program is going to grow within our Army. Changes are going to come and we have to be able to embrace them,” said Pechie. Cox who also served as the former President of OutServe, encouraged the garrison to keep up the momentum. “The first step is always the hardest, and once you’ve started on the journey it’s easier to stay on the journey,” he said. The last USAG Wiesbaden Pride Month event will be a free showing of the movie “The Bird Cage,” June 23 at 7 p.m. at the Tony Bass Auditorium. About OutServe Lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender service members, Department of Defense civilians, contractors or family members in the Wiesbaden area can find a supportive community through the worldwide organization OutServe – Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. Ashley Carothers, who serves as the Germany Chapter President, said the organization’s mission is to educate the community and provide legal services and resources that help LGBT military members grow personally and professionally as they work toward equality for all. OutServe does this by developing training materials for military installations and units, conducting and supporting various Pride events throughout Europe, and ensuring access to community resources that help LGBT members and their families work through the challenges of being stationed overseas. “LGBT military members overseas have a support group, that’s us. That’s OutServe,” Carothers said. The organization has over 75,000 followers and more than 7,000 active members associated with more than 80 chapters worldwide. Start with the marcarpone mixture and end with the strawberries. On top, garnish with one mint leaf per glass. The quality of the dish will depend upon the quality of your balsamic vinegar. There is definitely a difference between a cheap balsamic vinegar and one that is more expensive. You can also add a touch of balsamic marinade to the top layer of strawberries.

BONN, BEETHOVEN’S BIRTHPLACE

Bonn is one of Germany’s oldest cities and the former capital of West Germany. There is a lot to do and plenty to see in this northwestern German city, famously touted as the birthplace of Beethoven. Beethoven Walking Tour Bonn offers a unique opportunity to see Beethoven’s origins, and they’ve preserved just about everything the man touched. For tourists, the city offers a self-guided walking tour, “Beethoven Walk” which features 16 points of interest all related to the musician. Some stops on the tour are more noteworthy than others; nonetheless, the

walk is a good way to get a lay of the city. You can pick up a pamphlet with a map of the walk from the Bonn Information office (Windeckstrasse 1). Some highlights along the route include Beethoven Haus (the house where Beethoven was born and lived) which is now a museum complete with instruments. Follow the journey through the musician’s life with a stop at St. Remigius Parish Church (Pfarrkirche St. Remigius in German) where a 10-year-old Beethoven played the organ during Sunday service (the organ itself is at the Beethoven Haus). The grave of Beethoven’s mother is also featured on the tour and is an interesting and humanizing historical marker. Also popular is the “Beton” concrete sculpture featuring a bust of Beethoven done by artist Klaus Kammerichs in 1986.

Market Square and Altes Rathaus I’m a sucker for a daily market and Bonn’s market in the center of town is a great one with vendors filling the square outside of the Altes Rathaus. In the evening, when the market clears, you can get a better view of the beautiful Altes Rathaus without the crowds

miss. Out front, giant sculpted heads of Saint Cassius and Florentius lend an ominous and artistic edge to one of Germany’s oldest churches.
