Landeskommando Hessen leadership hosted members of the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden command for a day at Hessentag, May 26, to reinforce German-American friendship during the annual festival held in the city of Herborn this year. Landeskommando Brig. Gen. Eckart Klink and Col. Todd J. Fish, USAG Wiesbaden commander, along with members of his family, attended the event to learn more about the Bundeswehr’s participation. Hessentag is the oldest and largest state festival in Germany. It began in 1961 as a place for refugees and migrants to come together with residents of the state of Hessen — which was created less than 20 years prior — in 1946. The state’s then-prime minister, Georg August Zinn, had a motto for integrating the new residents into the community: “Hesse ist, wer Hesse sein will,” or “A Hessian is anybody who wants to be a Hessian.” Hessentag is held in a different city each year. That first year 40,000 people attended, and it has only gotten more popular, with the number of visitors reaching more than a million most years. The festival featured a ferris wheel, street performances, food and drinks and a variety of ways to learn more about the service and capabilities of the German military. Interac-
