7th MSC’s 209th DLD gets new commander
Oh say, can they sing!
By Sgt. Daniel J. Friedberg 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs Office
Col. John E. Dethlefs assumed command of the 7th Mission Support Command’s 209th Digital Liaison Detachment in a ceremony held at the McCully Barracks’ Fitness Center in Wackernheim Sept. 10. In his first speech before his new Soldiers, Dethlefs, expressed surprise that he would be actually chosen for command in Germany. “I felt like I had won the lottery,” Dethlefs said, when he found out he was going to command a DLD in Germany. Dethlefs explained that the only thing that was better for him than leading Soldiers, was leading Soldiers in Germany. “We are team builders,” said Dethlefs, “our country will ask us to do the same thing; to go embed with an ally, to help and advise them. Live free, never surrender.” Brig. Gen. Steven W. Ainsworth, the commanding general of the 7th MSC, officiated the assumption of command ceremony.

Lisa Young is acutely aware of the struggles military families face when moving to a new place — from securing a home and getting the kids settled in school and having adults they can count on to finding a niche in a new community. That’s why she has put so much effort into reaching out and supporting others. “I vowed that no spouse would have to

learn the hard way, like I did.” It is because of Young’s tireless work helping others, and that of her husband, Maj. Craig Young and their three children, Zachary, 16, Abigail, 13, and Benjamin, 10, that they are the recipients of the Association of the United States Army Volunteer Family of the Year award. The Youngs were nominated by the General C.W. Abrams Chapter of AUSA. David Fulton, director, Mission Support
Element, U.S. Army Europe, wrote the nomination for the Young family, touting their “contagious enthusiasm” in the organizations they help support. “Major and Lisa Young, along with their children, are stalwart volunteers within the Wiesbaden Military Community. Their passion resides in developing the youth in our community through an enriched Boy Scouts of America program.” Maj. Young serves as cubmaster and

Legal service process different overseas By Wiesbaden Legal Center Service is a process indicating that a defendant or respondent in a case has been given reasonable notice of the court proceeding and provided an opportunity to appear and present their case. Service is required in civil court cases. Each state and federal court has its own rules on how a person can be served. Some rules require a sheriff or peace officer to serve an individual, while others may allow a hired process server or service by certified mail. Plaintiffs normally cannot proceed with a case until adequate service is accomplished. Service internationally is more complicated. The U.S. and Germany (and various other European countries) are signatories to the Hague Convention of Nov. 15, 1965 on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extra-Judicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters, a.k.a the Hague Service Convention (HSC). The HSC addresses
service of process across international borders. Under the U.S. Constitution Supremacy Clause, regardless of the local rules, if service does not conform to the provisions of HSC, it is improper and a court order stemming from that case is voidable. Compliance with the HSC for service in Germany requires a certified court filing and a German translation before transferring the packet for service. Packets are mailed to a Central Agency with the German “Land” (state) affected to achieve service of process. Plaintiffs attempt other means of service, whether it is purposefully in violation of or unaware of the HSC. While a defendant is free to waive HSC service requirement, if there is no waiver, service is not allowed by certified or regular mail through APO system or Deutsche Post. Service is also prohibited by handing the defendant the packet or having someone else deliver the packet. U.S. military installations in Europe are not “U.S. soil” locations exempt from HSC. Under AR 27-40, U.S. military and legal office personnel are not permitted to assist in service of process attempts that do not comply with HSC and the NATO SOFA. If assistance is provided, that individual may be punished under German law. Most importantly, non-HSC service attempts are improper and subject to dismissal. If you are served with legal papers by any means, whether through the Legal Office or by mail or in person, you should immediately consult with a lawyer regarding your rights and responsibilities.
Customs allows donations of food, clothing, toys By Robert Szostek
U.S. Army Europe Customs Executive Agency
American military communities throughout Europe have done great work in providing clothing and other aid to refugees flooding to the continent in the greatest numbers since the end of World War II. Around one million asylum-seekers fleeing Syria, Iraq and other countries filtered into Germany by the end of last year, according to the Stars and Stripes. “However, U.S. Forces personnel in Germany must remember that the items they buy at the commissary or post and base exchange are generally tax and duty-free,” said Tim Sellman, acting director of the USAREUR Customs Executive Agency in Wiesbaden, which is responsible for customs enforcement in Germany. The same may apply to the household goods they imported when they moved to Germany or any other item purchased tax or duty-free while stationed in Germany. Therefore, giving used personal belongings or items bought at U.S. Forces sales facilities to people who are not eligible for customs exemption under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement for Germany is subject to certain restrictions. But customs experts say U.S. Forces personnel and organizations in Germany can donate foodstuffs, clothing and children’s toys to refugees without any restrictions based on an exception granted by German customs authorities.

“Foodstuffs, clothing and children’s toys can be donated either directly to a refugee or to organizations which collect items for refugees, such as the Red Cross, without the requirement to effect customs clearance,” explained Rula Strumpen, who leads the Executive Agency’s NATO SOFA Office. Coordination with German Customs or U.S. military customs offices is not necessary as no taxes would need to be paid, she added. Items bought in German stores are taxed by German authorities and so can be donated to any charitable organization without restriction. If you have any questions dealing with customs, you can find your local customs office online at http://www.eur. army.mil/opm/customs/gercustoms.htm.
Passport, birth certificate processing begin at local office By Emily Jennings
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs
The Wiesbaden Military Personnel Division Passport Office advises U.S. ID card holders to not go directly to the U.S. Consulate in Frankfurt for passport and birth abroad services. “The U.S. Consulate located in Frankfurt, Germany has very specific guidelines when dealing with U.S. ID card holders. They will not see any ID card holder until that person has been processed here at the Military Passport Office,” said Gary Beatty, MPD supervisor. “Unfortunately, any customer that goes to the Consulate before visiting the Military Passport Office will be sent away without any action being
taken by the Consulate,” Beatty said. “The Consulate has agreed to assist us if you encounter an emergency where unexpected travel will occur and need a passport.” U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden community members who need new or renewed tourist passports or have had a baby in Germany and need a Consular Report of Birth Abroad have a few options to get these items processed locally. U.S. tourist passports generally take 4 to 6 weeks to process. For new parents, once your baby is born and you have his or her Geburten register (not to be confused with the Formula A birth certificate or the geburts urkunde), you can then make an appointment with
the Wiesbaden passport office for your CRBA. Please contact the Passport office at DSN 5481603/1605/1606 or civ (0611) 143-548-1603/1605/1606 or by email at: usarmy.wiesbaden. imcom.list.passport-office@ mail.mil for more information. Their office is located on Clay Kaserne, Bldg. 1023 East, room 162. At this time the wait for an appointment is about 45 days, Beatty said. “But we expect that to change drastically once we have another agent trained. We will be doubling the number of appointments at that time.”
Passport outreach day
If you have all your documentation ready, you might consider taking advantage of
the Passport Outreach day here in Wiesbaden, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Bldg. 1029. (Processing will take place in a room near the library. Signage will be posted). U.S. Consulate representatives will process tourist passports and Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) applications. There is no need to register for the event, but passport officials ask that you come prepared with a typed application from http://travel.state. gov/, originals and copies of required documents, passport photos and payment.

Fees for registration, drivers license go up Oct. 1 U.S. Army Europe release Starting Oct. 1, the U.S. Army Europe Registry of Motor Vehicles is increasing the vehicle registration fee in Germany by $5 to $35 dollars. Driver license fees are also going up to $20. Licensing fees were last increased in 1986, and the registration fee was raised to $30 in 2006 to fund the change to German license plates. The increase is necessary because the costs for personnel, supplies, data processing and equipment have continually grown over the years. The registry is a supplementary mission non-appropriated fund entity based in Sembach, Germany. The fund does not generate profits but must recover operational costs and maintain fund solvency. The fund has sustained losses for the past three years and can no longer absorb the losses without increasing fees. ‘BeThere’ to prevent suicide By M. Lorenzo Heller
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden ASAP Program Manager
September is Suicide Awareness month, when we take a little extra time to reflect on the loss of our friends and family members who have taken their own lives. It is also a time to reflect on how we can make a difference to help those who may be contemplating suicide. This year the Department of Defense’s theme is “BeThere.” How can we “BeThere”? First, “BeThere” for yourself — it is as important as the care you give to others. “BeThere” for yourself by connecting with family and friends, get outdoors for a workout, volunteer for a good cause, and get plenty of sleep. Secondly, “BeThere” for others by remembering just how important the act of a simple conversation can allow one to feel connected in life and make a big difference to someone’s day, week or month. Don’t assume someone else will make an effort; be the one who reaches out by calling, sending a text, inviting someone for coffee or a walk, or just stop to ask someone how they are doing when you run into them. Third, know when to “BeThere” by remembering that changes in behavior could mean that a person needs help. Reach out if you notice your friends or family members posting negative thoughts on social media, acting out of sorts or not being their normal selves, having relation-
tion of reward.” The family heads to Washington, D.C., next month to receive their award at the AUSA Meeting and Exposition.

New safety concept for the 2016 Oktoberfest
By Oktoberfest.de The Munich Oktoberfest takes place from Sept. 17 to Oct. 3. In the light of recent events, security experts have reevaluated and updated the safety concept for the 2016 Oktoberfest. A security fence will be introduced and backpacks and big bags will be prohibited. The new measures for 2016: • Backpacks and heavy bags are strictly forbidden, • a corresponding check is performed at all entrances, • in addition, access controls and luggage checks (of smaller bags) may be performed there, • the open flank at the slopeside along Theresienhöhe is closed by means of a security fence in order to prevent avoidance of the checks, • the entrance at the Theresienwiese subway stop is modified in such a manner that no guests are able to enter the festival area unchecked. “With the adjusted security measures, we react to recent
events without changing the basic character of the Oktoberfest,” said Mayor Josef Schmid. Control of luggage at the Oktoberfest is enforced by prohibiting any bags with a capacity of more than 3 liters. Exceptions will be made for justified causes like for example waitresses, handicapped people, competitive marksmen and members of the parades. Small handbags remain legal in general. There will be luggage depositories around the fairground. Security at the entrances will take care that prohibited luggage won’t be brought to the fairground. This means that the number of stewards will be significantly increased. During peak times, up to 450 security wardens will be on duty. By that, the city of Munich significantly increases their contribution to the Oktoberfest safety partnership. To keep uncontrolled luggage off fairground limits, the slope at the Theresienhöhe will be closed off by a mobile fence. The security fence can be

removed in less than a minute. The area at the Theresienwiese subway station will be reorganized. Visitors will be guided to the Bavariaring by stewards, signs and a fence. From there, the usual entrances can be accessed. The ban of backpacks will be added to the Oktoberfest regulations. As before, baby strollers / buggies are not allowed on the festival grounds on Saturdays, “German Unity Day” and past 6 p.m. on any other day. Still prohibited: Glass bottles, pressurized cans with potentially dangerous, corrosive or coloring contents or any item that could be used as a thrusting, cutting or clubbing weapon. Mayor Josef Schmid about the adjusted safety concept: “I’m glad everybody involved could reach consent about a conclusive safety concept for the Oktoberfest. The adapted safety concept adequately reacts to recent events without changing the basic character of the Oktoberfest. The necessary luggage checks can only be enforced without uncontrolled access to the fairground, which alone is reason enough to close the side at the slope at the Theresienhöhe. This will be achieved by a mobile fence, which can be removed in less than a minute. That way, opening a quick escape route is still possible.” “Our common goal in this new situation was to increase safety at the Oktoberfest”, said
Dr. Thomas Böhle from the Department of Public Order. “Recent events like the killing spree at the Olympia-Einkaufszentrum and the bombing at Ansbach made us reevaluate
the Oktoberfest safety concept. Banning backpacks and big bags from the fairground is an essential part of that. However, there is no guarantee for total safety anywhere.”
Oktoberfest Safety Tips: Along with registering with the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden AtHoc mass-warning notification system, festgoers should have the following emergency numbers and resources handy to stay safe.

I ask you to not just look to the past in remembrance, but to the future and all that we can accomplish together.

Spc. Connor Working’s name is engraved on the Wiesbaden Fitness Center’s wall. The 529th Military Police Company Soldier is the first athlete to officially lift 1,000 pounds in 2016. “This is just like in a powerlifting competition,” said Alexander Kuepper, a fitness program specialist, powerlifting official and former competitive lifter, explaining that to join the elite ranks of the center’s 1,000 Pound Club, a lifter must hoist a total of 1,000 pounds in the dead lift, bench press and squat disciplines. “For most people the hardest is the squat,” said Kuepper, explaining that anyone can attempt to join the 500- or 1,000 Pound Clubs simply by making an appointment at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center and ensuring they have a couple of spotters on hand during the lift session. “I tell them what is expected and explain the standards for each lift – how they have to be performed and how to get ready,” said Kuepper. Lifters have three attempts in each discipline to qualify successfully on any one day. The 500 and 1,000 Pound Clubs were started at the Wiesbaden Fitness Center in 2012 as a way to gain more visibility for the sport of powerlifting. “A lot of people are intimidated by this type of sport,” said Kuepper, adding that anyone can enjoy the benefits of lifting with a little advice from the fitness professionals, the right attitude and dedication.
“It’s been a three-year process for me,” said Working. “I just got into lifting when I joined the military.” Working added that while the Army has a viable physical training program, its intended to sustain a level of fitness. “To improve your own physical fitness you have to put in your own time. “I like it (powerlifting). It’s a great stress reliever, it’s relaxing, a way to let the tension out and cool down after work,” Working said, adding that he regularly changes his fitness routine to “shock his body” and continuously improve his overall physical condition. “As soon as I heard about the 1,000 Pound Club, I decided to try it. I think it’s a good way to get there to represent myself, my unit and my community,” he said. For his achievement, Working’s name has been added to the official plaque at the fitness center and he was presented with a T-shirt. “We don’t give out this award easily,” said Kuepper. “You have to earn it. What he accomplished is a real achievement.” “Making my last lift really felt good,” said Working. “I had to make my weight. You really have to be committed to the sport. It’s hard work.” “Because you have three events, you have to make sure not to over-rate yourself,” said Kuepper for others interested in trying to join the elite lifter ranks. “Don’t over-estimate yourself. … You need a strong core. The squat is the most extreme exercise for the body and performing it properly is so important.” For more information about the 500 and 1,000 Pound Clubs, tips on powerlifting and other fitness advice, stop by the Wiesbaden Fitness Center on Clay Kaserne.

Wiesbaden Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers members took survival skills to the next level during a special course in Otztal,Austria,Aug. 11 to 14. The advanced BOSS Life Skills Survival Course was a followon to a past course the Wiesbaden Soldier organization conducted. “BOSS members wanted to do an advanced life-skills survival course,” said Wiesbaden BOSS coordinator Steve Eclavea, explaining that a past course was extremely well received. “Last time it was a pilot program, and this time we wanted to do a little more intense training. The course trainers built it to meet our needs,” Eclavea said. “As soon as we got there, they unpacked, put on their survival gear and ruck-marched to the training site – Area 47,” he said, describing some of the feedback he got from the 18 Wiesbaden-area service members who participated. “It was a ‘great experience, great teachers – loved the in the woods experience,’” BOSS members reported. While the aim of the training was to provide BOSS members with a way to enhance resiliency, develop character, improve overall health and fitness – it also sought to help individuals grow to become more effective future leaders, Eclavea said. “They took away a lot of life learning experiences – how to survive, shared camaraderie, friendship and team building,” he said, adding that participants also had time to enjoy some down-time at the site’s water park featuring a beach, water skiing, high dive and other attractions. “It was a pleasure doing this trip for the Soldiers. We all had fun,” said the BOSS coordinator. “We’re still getting calls from Soldiers asking about when’s the next one – just one of the many events that BOSS features.” BOSS has a host of activities in store in the coming weeks including a free Italian Night Sept. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m., free DJ lessons Sept. 29 from 7 to 9 p.m., swimming Oct. 11, an X-Box Tournament Oct. 12, go-kart racing Oct. 28 and a trip to Berlin Nov. 11 to 13. News and features Teamwork key to preventing Soldier suicides, experts say By David Vergun Army News Service
WASHINGTON — Staff Sgt. Miguel Sierra vividly recalls himself and his staff handling logistical matters in the aftermath of a sailor committing suicide. As a behavioral specialist and the noncommissioned officer in charge of the Army Health Clinic at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Sierra said this experience impressed upon him the importance of teamwork and the need for Soldiers to maintain awareness of signs of distress among their fellow Soldiers. Sierra recalls that just nine years ago, Soldiers would receive “after the fact training,” meaning that units provided suicide education only following a suicide. “When that happened enough times, people realized the issue was more serious than it was,” he said. “Now, commanders and NCOs are getting the word out about suicide prevention. They’re being more proactive and less reactive. These days, commanders are more respectful of the advice of psychologists, psychiatrists and other health professionals who are trained to identify suicide risk factors and conditions that can serve as precursors to suicide like traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder, he said. Sierra’s current job involves offering “reintegration program” guidance to Soldiers returning from deployment. He sits down with them and discusses the challenges they will face in the peacetime environment and briefs them on the services that are available should they feel depressed. However, he is quick to add that, just because a Soldier hasn’t deployed, that doesn’t mean the Soldier isn’t at risk. There was a time when Soldiers felt too ashamed or embarrassed to seek help for suicide, depression, PTSD and other behavioral health issues, he said. That only further alienated the person, and besides, it just isn’t true. “It is still not easy for Soldiers to come and see us but over the last five years,” he said. “We’ve done a good job in telling them it’s not a sign of weakness to seek help.” Now, even commanders and first sergeants are sharing with Soldiers about their own struggles with depression or PTSD. “Their testimony is even more effective than what I do,” he said. “The message is, it’s okay to seek help.”
include a simple change in demeanor, the manifestation of unusual behaviors, or a Soldier avoiding interaction with his or her children, spouse or coworkers. Fellow Soldiers are perhaps best positioned to detect such signs early on, according to Lt. Gen. Nadja Y. West, Army surgeon general and commander of the Army Medical Command. “Who knows what a person is like better than the person you’re with every day? That person can sense a demeanor change,” West remarked at a Defense Writers Group Aug. 18. The first time a behavioral health specialist meets with a person, the specialist will be unfamiliar with the person’s usual behavior and personality and, for that reason, may not immediately recognize a difference in attitude or outlook. A battle buddy or spouse who interacts with the person every day, on the other hand, might easily notice such a difference.
Buddy Aide Program
Sierra said that the Army has been implementing ACE training for some
time, with ACE standing for “ask, care, escort.” ACE teaches individuals, such as a fellow Soldier, to “ask” if the buddy is doing okay and is trained to “care,” watching for outbursts, signs of depression, giving away possessions or talking about feelings of helplessness. That buddy can then “escort,” or get that person to the chaplain or behavioral health expert for care and treatment, he said. Soldiers are also trained in ways to engage that person so they don’t fear “what if I mess up when I approach them,” he added. West said the Army has seen a dramatic increase in behavioral health visits by Soldiers, from 900,000 patients two years ago to over 2 million within the past year. The increase doesn’t mean the problem is getting worse. It means the word is getting out that seeking help is okay, she added.
Embedded Behavioral Health
Another defense is the Army’s embedded behavioral health program.
Behavioral health teams are embedded in units to ensure that Soldiers won’t have to leave work to access services at a clinic or hospital. There are 62 teams supporting 176 operational units now, West said. The Army’s goal is to reach 65 behavioral health teams in 197 units. West would like to achieve an even number, but funding and manning restrictions must be taken into account. “I’ve been out to various areas and they were very well received. The line really appreciates it,” West said of the embedded behavioral health teams. “We’ve found there’s a decrease in hospitalization rates as well for behavioral health issues. So where before you had to send Soldiers to a hospital and got to a point where they were in such a dire position that they had to be hospitalized — that decreased by 40 percent.” The teams, she said, are composed of psychologists and psychiatrists and social workers. A total of 1,700 of these providers are embedded in units and in military treatment facilities, a number that’s doubled over the last several years.

The Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic wants to optimize the health of Soldiers, families, and retirees all year round by initiating a special focus on Preventive Medicine. The goal of this initiative is to build a strong Army community that understands the value of preventive health care services and one that seeks care not only for acute needs. The WAHC team of professionals along with new WAHC Commander Lt. Col. Nelson So, invite you to take charge of your health and join this very important mission. Many patients may have already heard the term HEDIS being used among health care organizations. HEDIS stands for Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set. It is a tool put out by the National Committee for Quality Assurance and is used by more than 90 percent of America’s health plans to measure performance on important dimensions of care and service. The goal is to transition from a health care system that focuses on treating someone who is ill, to a system for health that promotes both health and prevention. WAHC is following these standards of care and looking closely at the monthly data being collected on specific health care measures. The HEDIS measures address a broad range of important health issues, from management of low back pain and diabetes to screening for cancer to well-child visits. Patients may have already gotten phone

calls or a “Relay Health” message from nurses stating you are “Due” or “Overdue” for different cancer screenings, chlamydia testing, diabetes care, or well child visits. Or perhaps during a recent visit, the diligent WAHC medics identified you are due for a mammogram, colonoscopy, or pap smear. The clinic providers are looking at chief complaints for patient visits and taking a holistic approach by considering, “Is my patient up to date on their preventive medicine screenings?” Medical Director Lt. Col. David Escobedo meets weekly with staff and specifically reviews staff performance on preventive services. Escobedo evaluates areas where the clinic is excelling and areas for improvement. “We want our patients to get the preventive services they need, and if they are not, we need to look at why,” said Escobedo. Synchronizing resources is a major component of the initiative. A Population Health Nurse Practitioner recently joined the health care team to coordinate efforts to track preventive medicine services, educate clinic staff on each measure, and raise community awareness on when patients should get screened and what options are available. “This is a clinic-wide multidisciplinary approach to partner-up with our patients and help them stay up to date on preventive health care,” So said.
Other clinic departments such as Physical Therapy or Wellness Center appointments currently send reminders to patients for specific preventive medicine services. The clinic believes it may be easier for patients to proceed to their health care team and simply schedule an appointment while already in the facility. We want to help make getting your screenings done as easy and seamless as possible So said. For those patients that have had screenings done outside the Military Treatment Facility, the clinic asks you to bring copies of all records to the TRICARE office in the clinic so the reports can be added to your medical
charts and given to your primary care provider for review. If they are in another language they will be sent for translation. The clinic is asking patients to review the HEDIS measures and consider, “Am I due for a screening?” Appointments can be scheduled through the Central Appointment Line at civ (06371) 9464-5762 or sign up for “Relay Health”, the WAHC secure messaging system and sends your health care team a message to discuss options. The WAHC looks forward to working with you to build a strong, healthy, and prevention driven community.

Bridget Jones’s Baby — Oscar® winners Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth reprise their roles in the next chapter of the world’s favorite singleton in Bridget Jones’s Baby. Directed by Sharon Maguire (Bridget Jones’s Diary), the new film in the beloved comedy series based on creator Helen Fielding’s heroine finds Bridget unexpectedly expecting. Patrick Dempsey joins the cast for the third installment, and longtime collaborators Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films produce alongside Debra Hayward. Universal Pictures will distribute Bridget Jones’s Baby in North America and select international territories.
Storks — They deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.
Movie plots Suicide Squad — It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself? The Wild Life — On a tiny exotic island, Tuesday, an outgoing parrot lives with his quirky animal friends in paradise. However, Tuesday can’t stop dreaming about discovering the world. After a violent storm, Tuesday and his friends wake up to find a strange creature on the beach: Robinson Crusoe. Tuesday immediately views Crusoe as his ticket off the island to explore new lands. Likewise, Crusoe soon realizes that the key to surviving on the island is through the help of Tuesday and the other animals. It isn’t always
easy at first, as the animals don’t speak“human.” Slowly but surely, they all start living together in harmony, until one day, when their comfortable life is overturned by two savage cats, who wish to take control of the island. A battle ensues between the cats and the group of friends but Crusoe and the animals soon discover the true power of friendship up against all odds (even savage cats). Snowden — The story of an American whistle blower who heads to Russia and the back and forth between the leaker and his lawyer as he waits while that country considers his request for asylum. The Magnificent Seven — Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’and Columbia Pictures’ “The Magnificent Seven.” With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns - Sam Chisolm, Josh Farraday, Goodnight Robicheaux, Jack Horne, Billy Rocks, Vasquez, and Red Harvest. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

flowed as individuals teamed up to splatter color on their comrades while “doing battle” on the paintball range. “This is entirely NCO driven,” said Capt. Amelia Rutkowski, Alpha Company commander, explaining that Sgt. Jared Campbell contacted Wiesbaden Outdoor Recreation with the idea of combining monthly Army Warrior Tasks training with resiliency training. “This translates to what we do as Soldiers and as a unit,” said Campbell while fielding after-action comments from members of the unit. “The purpose of this is to build esprit de corps. That’s what this is about – you’re going to be put in situations where you need to know that you can trust and rely on someone else – your brothers (and sisters) in arms. You guys worked together as a team.” The level of interest and follow-on comments showed that the Warrior Adventure Quest opportunity was well received, Campbell said. “I think that they responded a little more than we expected. There definitely was an increase in morale, and their excitement showed that they wanted to be here.” Comments ranged from “It was a lot of fun and helped us move under fire and communicate better” to “It was pretty awesome” and “It helped us work together as a team … a good learning experience.” “I want to see if I can pitch this to the battalion to get more people involved,” said Campbell. “We should use these resources. I hope to do this again.” “I’ve already told my fellow company commanders about this opportunity,” added Rutkowski. Members of units interested in finding out more about Outdoor Recreation’s Warrior Adventure Quest program can stop by Bldg. 1043 on Clay Kaserne or call DSN 548-9801.

Soldiers returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan remember the various ways the U.S. Army strove to ease the transition back to a garrison environment. The intent was to streamline the redeployment process, reduce stress and to quickly reintegrate service members back into their “normal” lives. One of the tools military leaders used to help Soldiers readjust after (and before) serving in harm’s way was the Warrior Adventure Quest program. The “reset training tool” was designed to introduce Soldiers to life leisure skills such as Outdoor Recreation’s climbing, mountain biking and other “high adventure” activities to serve as alternatives to possible negative behaviors such as drunk driving or other extreme risk taking. “It used to be just for redeploying units, but it has been changed to serve deploying, redeploying and nondeployable units to build esprit de corps and to give Soldiers more life leisure skills,” said Jason Bennett, a programmer with Wiesbaden Outdoor Recreation. Besides encouraging teamwork and communications, the program is meant to “show members of a unit that they can rely on their battle buddies for leadership and support” whether in a combat environment or back at their home base, Bennett said. “Now it’s more about team building – providing things such as paintball, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding and climbing … things that they can use later on in life to deal with stress.” Members of Alpha Company, 24th Military Intelligence Battalion, recently took advantage of the program by spending a morning at Outdoor Recreation’s McCully Barracks Paintball Range. minutes. Add pesto and parmesan. Let this simmer for 1-2 minutes, then add salt and pepper to taste. You can serve this with a nice ciabatta bread and tossed salad with balsamic and olive oil dressing for a nice quick meal.
Ingredients pasta (for 4 people) 1.5 pounds penne pasta, dried ½ cup fresh parmesan, shaved (use a knife to shave the parmesan) 2 cups cream 2 tablespoons green pesto (see recipe from August 19 edition - just delete the lime juice for this recipe) 1 tablespoon olive oil ½ tablespoon minced garlic ½ teaspoon salt for boiling pasta ¼ teaspoon ground white or black pepper
Ingredients dressing (for 4 people) 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons good quality extra virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons water ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon white pepper ½ - ¼ teaspoon sugar ½ cup finely diced red or purple onions Fresh basil to taste
Boil the pasta in salted water. Cook the pasta until it is ¾ done, a bit more than al dente. This is going to be probably around 8 minutes. Strain noodles from boiling water. In a skillet heat olive oil on medium heat. Add pasta and cream and let simmer for 3-4
Mix all ingredients and drizzle on salad. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is made by only using the pressure of the stones pressing on the olives to extract the olive oil. No heat is involved. This takes hours. If heat is used to extract the oil you, then it is robust olive oil.
