Celebrate Hispanic Heritage in Wiesbaden
5th Signal hosts event to highlight diversity, history, achievements Herald-Union Staff From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 the Wiesbaden community is invited to celebrate the history, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America during Hispanic Heritage Month. September 15th was chosen as the starting point of Hispanic Heritage Month because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on Sept. 16, and Chile on Sept. 18.

ASAP clinical care realigns to Health Clinic Oct. 1 By Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic Starting Oct. 1, a significant change is taking place across the Army in how care is provided for beneficiaries who struggle with substance use issues. The Army Substance Abuse Program clinical care portion will be realigned under the U.S. Army Medical Command as Substance Use Disorder Clinical Care, or SUDCC, to integrate substance abuse care with the Behavioral Health System. The change comes following a comprehensive review of the program and is a directive from the Secretary of the Army.
Inside Retiree Appreciation Day
Basic medical and dental services will be provided, see page 5.
Responsibility and policy oversight of ASAP drug testing and deterrence, alcohol and drug abuse prevention training and the ASAP training curriculum will remain under the Installation Management Command. Substance abuse and substance use disorders have increased in the Army since 2001 due to the cumulative and continued stressors of a persistent conflict. The realignment of the ASAP clinical care portion ensures holistic and integrated treatment across the Army in accordance with Department of Defense policies, national standards and clinical best practices.
The integration of clinical services with behavioral health addresses cooccurring mental and physical illnesses and substance use disorders to allow for effective and evidence-based early intervention. “The ASAP clinic already has an outstanding relationship with the behavioral health clinic,” said Nicole Walton, current chief of the ASAP clinic. “This realignment will allow us to improve coordination and care management for patients with substance use and behavioral health conditions. We believe the realignment will lead to fewer treatment failures and better substance use disorders outcomes through earlier detection

and intervention,” Walton added. In Wiesbaden, SUDCC counselors will be made part of Behavioral Health teams no later than Oct. 1. Two multidisciplinary clinics will be established for Soldiers, families, and other beneficiaries to receive Behavioral Health care. The clinics will be located in Bldg. 1526 (near the Welcome Center — previously the ASAP building) and Bldg. 1041 (adjacent to the main Health Clinic — current BH clinic). Regardless of behavioral health or substance abuse condition, commanders and Soldiers will have a single point of entry for care, education and relapse

Speak up. Be part of the solution: October is DVAM U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Commander’s Proclamation: Domestic Violence Awareness Month is recognized October of each year. Domestic violence is never OK. No one deserves to be abused and anyone can be a victim. Any time an Army Family member suffers from abuse, we fall short of our goals for readiness. Everyone plays a role in upholding the Army values and standards that support safe, healthy relationships for everyone in the military community. Without every one of us doing our part, we cannot say our Army is fully ready to meet the mission
of preventing domestic violence. Therefore, the message to everyone in the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden community for Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2016 is clear and simple: Speak Up. Be Part of the Solution. Simple actions can help protect victims. Have the courage to speak up and do the right thing. Learn safe and appropriate ways to raise the issue of domestic violence with family, friends, co-workers and community members. Join me in making this October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month the beginning of a year-round campaign
to end domestic abuse. Let the USAG Wiesbaden Family Advocacy Program be your partner in preventing and reducing the risk of domestic abuse, and restore valued relationships that are deteriorating. Take a stand to stop domestic violence and keep our community safe.
COL Todd J. Fish Commander USAG Wiesbaden
Know the facts and where to get assistance In the United States, an average of 20 people are physically abused by intimate partners every minute. This equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been physically abused by an intimate partner. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have been severely physically abused by an intimate partner. 1 in 7 Women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Domestic victimization is correlated with a higher rate of depression and suicidal behavior. 19% of domestic violence incidents involves a weapon. Only 34% of people who are injured by their partners receive medical care. Domestic violence victims lose nearly 8 million days of paid work per year in the U.S. alone — the equivalent of 32,000 full-time jobs.
‘Light the Way’
Light the Way is a community effort to stand as a unified front against domestic violence. Beginning Oct. 3, LED candles will be placed in various unit and community locations through the garrison. The candles will be accompanied by information, including the number for the domestic violence hotline.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, FAP and ACS will be offering self-defense classes to the community. Each class will teach critical skills such as diffusing the situation, safely escaping, and defending oneself against physical attack. FAP outreach at Main Exchange
Domestic violence affects more than 12 million people each year. When strangulation (sometimes referred to as “being choked”) is used as a tool of abuse in domestic violence, the victim often does not show visible symptoms. A domestic violence victim who has been strangled in the past is seven times more
likely to eventually become a homicide victim. Throughout the last two decades, studies have repeatedly shown that domestic violence is a more frequent and severe problem in the military than it is in the civilian domain. Information sourced from Domestic violence national

News and features September is Disaster Preparedness Month: What’s your plan? By Herald Union Staff This year was an important reminder to all of us that disasters can strike anytime and anyplace. Nearly every region of the world experienced some form of extreme weather event, including recent flooding in Louisiana and the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck central Italy in August. When disaster strikes it disrupts our abilities to communicate and connect with family or resources that could assist. As with many life events, preparation is the key to success. When you prepare and practice for an emergency in advance, it makes a real difference in your ability to take immediate and informed action when it matters most. Early action can also help you to recover more quickly. Preparing for disasters is a yearround activity. It’s not a matter of if the next disaster will happen, but when. Start taking action and prepare now! ● BE INFORMED. Use mobile alerts to English language news sources in Europe such as CNN, BBC, The Local, to stay informed. Follow your unit or the garrison’s social me-
dia sites. Sign up for the AtHoc mass notification system at www.eur.army. mil/travelsafe/. ● MAKE A PLAN. Know where your family will go and how you’ll communicate during an emergency. ● BUILD A KIT. Have supplies on hand that you’ll need to live independently for several days. Include food, water, and medicine for family and pets. ● TAKE ACTION. Help others prepare in your community. Taking these four simple steps and having a discussion and/or conducting

Meet your Army
Hispanic Soldier keeps cargo vessels seaworthy By David Vergun Army News Service
WASHINGTON — If a ship isn’t loaded correctly, it isn’t seaworthy, and all sorts of bad things can happen, said Sgt. 1st Class Humberto Castellanos. Castellanos, a cargo noncommissioned officer of the 832nd Transportation Battalion, located on Blount Island, near Jacksonville, Florida, is responsible for ensuring the proper loading and unloading of ships. His military occupational specialty is 88H, cargo specialist. He has served in the Army nearly 17 years. Managing the loading and unloading often requires speaking Spanish to the crew, he said, proud of his Hispanic heritage. The Army is currently recognizing the contributions of Soldiers like Castellanos with its observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

The Army maintains a wide variety of ships, everything from the river dredges used by the Army Corps of Engineers, to the landing craft utility used for ship-to-shore access, to the larger ships like the logistics support vessel that the Army uses to move equipment worldwide. It’s these larger vessels that Castellanos now works on, as well as contracted vessels.
SEAWORTHY ENDEAVOR
During loading, Castellanos must factor in the size, weight, and arrangement of vehicles, containers and trailers. Loading a vessel in such a way that makes it top heavy or too heavy on one side or its end could compromise its seaworthiness. Just as importantly, everything must be secured correctly and tied down so as to prevent any “loose cannons” from moving freely about during choppy seas and stormy weather. Each ship comes with its own onboard crane. The crane operator must move materiel in and out of the ship in a safe manner, which makes skillful supervision key to keeping things ship-

Castellanos’ last duty assignment was at Fort Eustis, Virginia, where he was a platoon sergeant at an Inland Cargo Transfer Company. At Fort Eustis, they were the smaller landing craft utility, he said. Loading the vessels was much simpler than loading the larger vessels he works on today. Castellanos said Blount Island’s Army and contractor vessels ply primarily to Central and South American ports of call, which is where his Spanish language skills come in handy. The crews on most of the ships speak Spanish only. Castellanos’ first language is Spanish. He grew up in Reynosa, a town in Mexico not far from where he was born in McAllen, Texas. As a boy, his parents taught him such values as honesty, trustworthiness and teamwork, values that overlap with those of the Army, which made the Army a good fit, he said. Castellanos married his high school sweetheart from Reynosa. He said she’s glad he decided to make the Army a career. When Castellanos eventually retires, he plans to continue serving the United States as a customs and border patrol agent.

Soldiers tap into careers at Oktoberfest event U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs
Soldiers, retirees, civilians and family members tapped into future careers and education benefits during the Wiesbaden Education Center Oktoberfest open house on Clay Kaserne, Sept. 23. Dressed in traditional Bavarian Dirndl-dress or Trachten, local representatives with Central Texas College, EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University, University of Maryland University College, University of Oklahoma and the Army’s Soldier for Life program served up a “Maß” of information for future enrollees throughout the afternoon as well as a few pretzels. Fall is traditionally back to school time; however, “it’s always a good time to talk about education,” said Cris Weisbecker, Education Services
Officer at the Wiesbaden Education Center. All four contract schools have an open, rolling enrollment throughout the year, so if students are looking to get into a program, there’s no need to wait she explained. Participants who stopped by for a quick lunch were quickly found discussing their future at one of the tables. Pfc. Andres Magallanes, 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade said he stopped by after seeing the event on Facebook and wanted more information about aviation careers. Events like these are really helpful for the junior enlisted said Patricia Mitchell, Associate Campus Director for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University who provide Magallanes with information about the application process, financial aid, and degree plans. Wiesbaden was one of five education centers Germanywide to host an Oktoberfest.

News and features Gold Star mother finds calling after son’s death By Jessica Marie Ryan Family and MWR Command
FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas – Right before his deployment to Afghanistan, Marine Capt. Jesse Melton III told his mother, “Mom, I want to go change the world and make a difference.” At 29, Melton already made a big impact on his family, church and community. He learned to serve others at an early age and was inspired to serve in the military by his father and grandfather. His life, however, was cut short during that fateful deployment in 2008. He and two other Marines were killed while supporting combat operations in the Parwan province. He was not scheduled to be on duty but took the place of a fellow Marine. His mother Janice Chance, of Owings Mills, Maryland, saw his death as a platform to serve others. Calling her son “My Quiet Storm,” Chance saw firsthand the difference he made on others and wanted to continue the legacy of service he started. “I cry, but I don’t drown in my tears, and I am determined not to be paralyzed by my pain. It’s a new normal for us [Gold Star mothers],” she said. “Nothing can replace the loss of a child, but you move forward and make a life of service.” In 2009, Chance became involved with Army Survivor Outreach Services after she was contacted by a coordinator at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. SOS is the official Army program dedicated to providing support services to surviving family members, including those in other military branches. It is an Army Community Service program and is a part of the Installation Management Command’s G9 Directorate. Chance was already familiar with the Army community. Although she is the surviving mother of a Marine, her daughter Jenine — inspired by her brother — became an Army officer and served two tours in Iraq before separating from service. “Our children’s service stopped, but SOS is making sure that they are not forgotten and that we [the parents] are still in the Army family,” she said.
Chance began to attend SOS events and met other survivors at the Army installations in Maryland. She soon found herself helping them. As the president and chaplain for the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. Maryland Chapter, Chance worked with SOS coordinators in welcoming mothers new to the area and to the program. “Because I’m the chaplain, I receive a lot of phone calls from moms who are facing challenges. I link them to the SOS coordinators,” she said. In addition to SOS, Chance volunteered in her community. A retired registered nurse, she spends her days helping veterans through organizations such as the American Red Cross and Veterans Affairs Medical Healthcare System. In the last year, she estimated that she put in over 800 hours and drove over 8,000 miles to conduct volunteer work. To Chance, volunteering is therapeutic. “Grief turned in is destructive,” she said. “When I volunteer at Walter Reed [National Military Medical Center] and when I go the VA [hospitals], I can say mission complete for that day. I made a difference in someone’s life. I encouraged someone. I listen to them. I let them know that I appreciate their service and sacrifice. I think I’m more blessed than they are. I get more joy from serving. I have learned that it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Chance’s work in the community does not go unnoticed. Voncile Farmer, the SOS support coordinator at Fort Meade, Maryland, first met Chance during a Gold Star Wives Day event in 2014. She saw how Chance helped other survivors deal with their grief.
“She puts her heart into the program,” said Farmer. “She gets the word out to educate the community about the survivors, the [Gold Star] pins and SOS. Telling her story helps others heal. Telling her son’s story helps the community and keeps his story and legacy alive.” Chance always remembers her son as “an officer and a gentleman.” She raised him to be a man of service and saw the impact he made on his family, fellow
Marines and community members. “It gives me great pride that my son died doing what he loved to do — serving and defending our country,” she said. “Jesse wanted to go and change the world and make a difference. He did that wherever he served. The world is now being changed through me. I go out and continue to serve in Jesse’s honor. I’m inspired by him and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

IN HONOR OF SACRIFICE The United States began observing Gold Star Mother’s Day on the last Sunday of September, in 1936. The Gold Star Wives was formed before the end of World War II. The Gold Star Lapel Button was established in August 1947. Today, the nation recognizes the sacrifice that all Gold Star Family members make when a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or other loved one dies in service to the nation. The strength of our Nation is our Army. The strength of our Army is our Soldiers. The strength of our Soldiers is our families. The Army recognizes that no one has given more for the Nation than the families of the fallen. John Brandt, Scoutmaster for Wiesbaden Troop 106, pins the Eagle Scout Badge on Adam Cloud while Michael Brandt looks on. Both scouts were recognized for attaining Scouting’s highest rank during an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony in Offenbach Sept. 25. By Amy L. Bugala
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs
Two Wiesbaden teenagers took another step forward toward developing their citizenship, character and personal fitness by attaining scouting’s highest rank. The National Office of the Boy Scouts of America recognized Adam Cloud and Michael Brandt as Eagle Scouts of Troop 106 during a ceremony in Offenbach Sept. 25. More than 70 people attended, including 8 adults who previously earned the rank. During the ceremony each candidate showcased their completed community service projects, which are a requirement to achieve the badge. Inspired by his father’s ancestral search and his church, Cloud, a Wiesbaden High School graduate, completed a project to help people conducting genealogy searches or anyone who may be looking for a loved one’s grave-site. Cloud organized a data capture day at a local Wiesbaden cemetery and trained 40 volunteers to upload data to the www.billiongraves.com web site using their mobile phones,
cameras, and the web site’s app. The project took 141 hours to coordinate, recruit and train volunteers and execute. All together the team contributed more than 2,000 grave photos and data files to the publicly searchable image database. “Genealogy is growing in importance across the world and many people are searching for who their ancestors are and where their remains are located,” Cloud said. “Genealogy is also an important part of [the Mormon] religion.” In addition to providing service and fulfilling the part of the Scout Oath, “To help other people at all times,” one of the primary purposes of the Eagle Scout service project is to learn leadership skills, or to improve or demonstrate leadership skills you already have. Cloud said his project tested his leadership skills at every phase. At times he was overwhelmed and pushed out of his comfort zone, but the overall experience helped him build confidence. “Becoming an Eagle Scout, or being an Eagle Scout, shows me I can do difficult things. I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he said. “I’ve
had to work hard to get here but with all the fun I’ve had along the way, it has been more than worth it.” Fellow Eagle Scout Michael Brandt had to overcome different challenges. Brandt, a Wiesbaden High School senior, said as an introvert he struggled initially with the coordination of his project, but learned that good communication is critical to overcome the obstacles he faced to earn his badge. “Being an Eagle Scout means being prepared for life and the hardships it will throw at you, but most important of all is to do your duty to God, your country, and your fellow man,” said Brandt. The goal of Brandt’s project was to help reduce stress on military families transitioning to Wiesbaden, especially children. Brandt’s project took 36 hours and 10 volunteers to complete. The scout coordinated volunteers, and the collection of newcomer materials to include, maps of housing areas, brochures, reference materials, toys and board games to create 13 welcome care packages to distribute to incoming families in his church.

News and features Staff ride teaches history, honors fallen Soldiers in Italy Story and photos by William B. King
2nd Signal Brigade Public Affairs
TORBOLE, Italy — In the final months of World War II, Carlo Bombardelli, 9 years old at the time, remembers looking out over Lake Garda from his home in Torbole, Italy, wondering when the Americans would arrive and the war would be over. “Everybody was waiting for the Americans. Every day the children asked their parents when the Americans are coming,” Bombardelli said through a translator. Then, on the evening of April 30, 1945, Bombardelli said he was outside his home when he heard screams for help coming from the lake. He raised the alarm, ran down to the water and managed to help save one person, U.S. Army Cpl. Thomas Hough, a lifeguard before joining the Army. However, 25 other Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division, including artilleryman Pfc. Frank Miller, drowned when their overloaded boat lost power and sank in the lake. A few years ago the boat was discovered sitting upright on the lakebed in about 250 meters (820 feet) of water, however no remains have ever been recovered. The event went largely unrecognized until this past April 30, 71 years later, when a monument to the fallen was erected next to a church by the lake in Torbole. The monument was placed adjacent to another monument for Brig. Gen. William Darby, an assistant division commander in the 10th Mountain Division and founder of the Army Rangers, who was also killed April 30, 1945 in Torbole by shrapnel from a German shell. Just two days later on May 2, 1945, all Nazi German forces in Italy surrendered unconditionally to the Allies. The war was over for Bombardelli and the people of Italy. “I always asked myself why the Americans came here and lost so many Soldiers for us,” Bombardelli said On Sept. 15, one day before National POW/MIA Recognition Day, leaders from across 2nd Signal Brigade gathered for a staff ride in the Verona and Lake Garda area. The staff ride was hosted by the 509th Signal Battalion and included presentations on World War II and modern history of the area, cultural excursions and team-building activities, as well as a ceremony to honor Darby and the 25 Soldiers who died crossing the lake. Several friends and relatives of Miller were present for the ceremony, including his daughter, Joanne Lien, and
son, Arnie Miller. Other special guests included the mayor of Torbole, members of the Italian Alpini and the local historical society, historians, friends, and now 81-year-old Bombardelli. Speaking at the church in Torbole where the monuments are located, Gianni Morandi, mayor of Torbole, said, “We’re honored to welcome our American guests and to honor the lives that were lost here in the Second World War.” Lien said she was just 2 years old when her dad died. She had never been to Italy before and said visiting the area where her father and the others died was an emotional experience for her. “I’m amazed at all this community has done to try and keep the memory of this going and give them some deserved recognition — I’m kind of in awe of that. It makes me realize what a wonderful people the Italians are and it advances the cause of friendship between our two countries,” Lien said. Col. Jeff Worthington, commander of 2nd Signal Brigade, said events such as the staff ride expand professional knowledge and are important for building relationships, esprit de corps and for strengthening the team. “I think it’s very important to bring people to someplace like this where we can touch some of the past and understand some of what the Italians have gone through. It’s different than learning from a book or in a classroom — you get to see on the ground how things happened,” Worthington said. Sgt. Christopher McCullough from the 2nd Signal Brigade S6 said he learned a lot on the staff ride just by being able to interact with senior leaders. “The knowledge you can get from them, picking their brains, knowing what to look for, what to understand, what’s the important goal, has helped me so I can pass it along to my fellow Soldiers,” McCullough said. He said he didn’t know much about the history of what happened in the area during World War II, but was glad to learn from historians and locals and to honor fallen Soldiers. “It’s always an amazing thing to be able to honor fallen veterans. I think it’s nice that as an Army we are still able to look back at our veterans and thank them for what they’ve done and the sacrifices they made,” McCullough said. Danny Dusatti, a member of the Torbole city council, said, “It’s an honor to be free, but it’s not to be taken for granted.” Bombardelli agreed.“It’s a great, great thing to have this occasion to remember. I hope that something like this war will never happen again,” he said.

The Basics
Everyone age 6 months and older needs to get a flu shot (vaccine) every year. The seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and others from the flu. For many people, the seasonal flu is a mild illness. But for some people, the flu can be dangerous or even deadly.
The flu can sometimes:
• Cause serious infections like pneumonia. • Make existing health problems worse (for example, flu can cause asthma attacks in people with asthma). • Lead to hospitalization or death. The flu spreads easily from person to person. When you get a flu vaccine, you don’t just protect yourself. You also protect everyone around you.
When do I need to get the seasonal flu vaccine?
Get a flu vaccine soon after it’s available each year. After you get the vaccine, it takes about 2 weeks for your body to develop protection against the flu. That’s why it’s a good idea to get the vaccine before the flu starts to spread in your community.
Herald Union
Flu season can be different from year to year. It can start as early as October and last as late as May. Most years, flu season is between December and February.
What is the flu?
The flu is caused by viruses that infect your nose, throat, and lungs. It’s easily spread from person to person when someone with the flu coughs, sneezes, or talks. It’s also possible to get the flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
Symptoms of the flu may include: • • • • • • • •
Headache Tiredness Cough Sore throat Runny or stuffy nose Muscle or body aches Fever of 100 °F or higher* Feeling feverish or having chills • Vomiting and diarrhea *Remember, not everyone with the flu has a fever.
Am I at high risk for serious complications from the flu?
• For some people, the flu is more likely to cause serious
illness that can lead to hospitalization or even death. • People at high risk for getting complications from the flu include: • Children under age 5 – especially children under age 2. • Pregnant women and women who’ve had a baby in the last 2 weeks. • Adults age 65 and older • People with some longterm health conditions (for example, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, or cancer). • People who live in long-term care facilities, like nursing homes. • American Indians and Alaska Natives. If you are at high risk from the flu, it’s very important to get a vaccine before the flu starts to spread in your community. If you care for or spend time with someone at high risk from the flu, you can protect both of you by getting a flu vaccine.
Are there any side effects from the seasonal flu vaccine?
Most people don’t have any side effects after getting a flu shot. Some people may have mild side effects that begin soon after the vaccine is given and usually last 1 to 2 days.
Side effects may include:
• Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. • Low fever • Aches These side effects aren’t the flu. You can’t get the flu from the flu shot because it’s made from killed flu viruses.
Take Action: Get a flu shot. Getting a flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting yourself from the flu. Get yourself and your family prepared by getting your flu shot during one of the upcoming Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic’s community vaccination times listed below. The Magnificent Seven — Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ “The Magnificent Seven.” With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns - Sam Chisolm, Josh Farraday, Goodnight Robicheaux, Jack Horne, Billy Rocks, Vasquez, and Red Harvest. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
Movie plots The Girl on the Train — Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux, Haley Bennett, Edgar Ramirez and Allison Janney star in DreamWorks Pictures’ THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, from director Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) and producer Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, Into the Woods). In the thriller, Rachel (Blunt), who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds. Based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel, The Girl on the Train is adapted for the screen by Erin Cressida Wilson and Taylor. The film’s executive producers are Jared LeBoff
and Celia Costas, and it will be released by Universal Pictures. The Storks — They deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world. Deepwater Horizon — A story set on the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, which exploded during April 2010 and created the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

TODAY: Asian Noodles with Vegetables and Fried Egg Ingredients (for 4 people)
• 1 small piece of ginger • 1 clove of garlic • 4 tablespoons soy sauce • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar or white wine vinegar • 6 tablespoons sesame oil • ¼ teaspoon salt, plus salt for boiling noodles and vegetables • 1 pound broccoli • 1 bag of sugar snap peas (approx. ½ pound) • ½ of a head of Chinese cabbage • 1 ½ pounds of Chinese noodles • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil • 4 eggs
Finely dice the ginger and garlic. Mix with soy sauce, vinegar and 3 tablespoons sesame oil. Use a large pot and prepare Chinese noodles as directed on the package, then strain noodles once they are cooked. While noodles are cooking, prepare the broccoli by cutting into small pieces. Chop the cabbage, removing the stem from each piece. In a second pot, boil water and cook broccoli for 2 minutes. Add the sugar snap peas for 1 minute. Strain these vegetables and put into ice water so that they will keep their nice green color. Heat the remaining sesame oil in a pan. Add all the Chinese cab-
bage allowing it to roast for 1 minute. Remove broccoli and sugar snap peas from ice water and add to the roasting pan to get them warm. Use a pan to prepare the fried eggs in sunflower oil. Cook them sunny side up. Put noodles in pan with vegetables and add the ginger and garlic sauce. Stir all together. Add seasoning to match your taste. Plate the noodles and vegetables and top with a fried egg. This is a nice dinner for a day when you are in the mood for a vegetarian meal.

SHOPPING BEYOND
THE MILITARY BASE Perhaps you have just arrived or even been in Germany for a while, and you would like to venture out and explore the local economy. However, you do not know where to begin or where to go. Well we are here to help you get started on your shopping journey beyond the gate guards! Below, you will find info on popular grocery and hardware stores as well as drugstores.

Grocery Stores
Let’s first head to the grocery store! Depending on which part of the United States you are from, you may be familiar with Wal-Mart Megastore, Publix, Piggly Wiggly, County Market, Food City, Safeway, Whole Foods, Arlan’s Market, Giant Food, Kroger, and many many more. If you are looking for grocery stores in Germany, then look out for Aldi, Lidl, Netto, Penny, Edeka, Globus, Real, and others. Although German grocery stores may be a little smaller and have less items than what you are used to in the U.S., you will find all your necessities such as food items (fruits & vegetables, dairy products, meats, breads, canned goods, frozen goods, organic products, snack foods, etc); beverages (including alcoholic drinks); cleaning products; paper products; health products (lotion, shampoo, etc.); sanitary products, baby products, and much more. Additionally, many of the German stores offer their own brand goods at a cheaper price than the well-known brand products.
One of the first things you will probably notice which is different about German stores is the shopping cart. In Germany you will need a coin (usually a 50 cent, 1 or 2 Euro) in order to use it. You just simply place the coin in the slot to release the chain that is connected to the other carts. And when you finish using the cart, replace the chain to get your money back. Carts can be found outside in the parking lot or in the front of the store. Other things that you may find different are the following: the cashiers are sitting; you must bag your own items and take them outside as there are no baggers; and you must pay for plastic bags. Alternatively, bring your own bags or a shopping basket for your purchases. If wanting to use a (U.S. or German) credit card or a (U.S. or German) debit card, it is best to ask the staff before purchasing because some stores accept cash only but this is changing more and more. Drugstores
Photo by Iakov Filimonov / Shutterstock.com
Back home we are familiar with Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid. In Germany, large drugstore chains include Müller, DM and Rossmann. Their range can be divided into four areas: remedy (teas and essences); beauty and wellness (body care and skin care products, fragrances, essential oils, cosmetics, etc.); organic health foods; and product for house and garden maintenance. Müller offers the following products: perfumes, stationary including school supplies, toys, multi-media (i.e. DVD movies as well as music CDs), commodities and fashion accessories. DM’s product range can be broken down into the following: • Beauty products (makeup, natural cosmetics, face, body, hair, fragrance and intimate hygiene) • Health (over-the-counter medicine, vitamins & minerals, etc.) • Nutritional (food, drinks, organic products and special dietary) • Baby & child (pregnancy care, diapers, nutritional items, bottles & pacifiers, games, clothes, etc.) • Household goods (kitchen, bathroom, washing, cleaning and animals) • Photo service (Order photo products online & instant print service)
Hardware stores
Are you thinking about adding a deck to your backyard or redesigning a room in your apartment? Are you a “Do-It-Yourself” kind of person? What probably comes to mind back home would be Home Depot, Ace Hardware or HomeBase. Here in Germany, a few large hardware chains are Toom Baummarkt, Obi, and Globus Hardware. Get your DIY juices flowing by selecting various items including: building materials; build & technology; garden & outdoor; grills & grill accessories; living & design; plumbing & installation; bad & sanitary; flooring & tiles; paint & wallpaper; heating, air conditioning & ventilation; kitchen; lights & electrics; machine tools & workshop; awnings & sun protection; zoo & aquarium, etc. The list goes on! German hardware stores also have professional staff available to assist you with your purchase or give advice on your DIY project. Though language barrier may be a problem, you can usually find someone that speaks English and will enjoy the chance to show it off.
