Getting to know new 86 AW commander: A conversation with Brig. Gen. Williams

As U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Adrienne L. Williams, 86th Airlift Wing commander, takes the helm of the Global Gateway, she is eager to share her personal values, leadership philosophies and resiliency tips and tricks to Airmen and their families under her command.

Q: Can you give us a little information about yourself that might not be found in your official bio?

A: When I was in kindergarten, first grade and second grade, my father was in the Air Force and was stationed here at Sembach back when it had an airfield. After that, he transferred to the Air Force Academy in Colorado. So, for the bulk of my life, all I’ve ever known was the Air Force.

I’m also married and have a daughter who is 15, and a son who is 12. I enjoy running, snow skiing, hiking, swimming and anything outside. I also really enjoy cooking.

Q: What personal values do you bring to your role as a commander and how do they influence your decisions?

A: For me, I like to keep things simple. Of course, the Air Force core values are paramount, but I really embrace what’s called the A.R.T. of leadership.

The “A” is your Attitude. Essentially, you can take that hill or that hill can take you. Everyday you wake up and make the decision on how you are going to tackle that day. You’re going to have bad days — we all do, we’re human. But it’s how you deal with it and how do you learn from it. How are you as a resilient Airman going to move forward with that?

The “R” is Respect. We talk a lot about respect. Respect is paramount in what we do. The thing I like to ask to challenge folks is, “do you respect who you are, and do you respect yourself, your morals and values?” That’s going to play directly into your attitude. If you respect who you are, even though maybe you stubbed your toe, or didn’t make the best decision or

get the best PT score you wanted, at the end of the day you still like who you are. Your attitude is going to reflect that.

The last is “T” for Trust. We need to trust each other, and we need to trust that we are doing the right thing to get after the mission set. I trust all of my Airmen and commanders to execute our no-fail missions, and I thank them for the trust they place in me.

Q: Coming into command, what priorities do you have in mind?

A: I sum it up into three things.

Readiness. It’s not just about being prepared for the expected, but also for the unexpected. We have to be ready for whatever may be handed to us. A multitude of items will fall into that category, and we must be ready for all of them.

The second thing is Airmen. When I talk about Airmen, I mean

capital “A” Airmen. This includes not just those of us in uniform, but also our civilian employees, our host nation partners, and our family members, spouses, dependents, and significant others. Together, we form a diverse yet unified family and team.

Relationships really matter. We are not going to move forward without them. We have partnerships with our host nation, the many different units here at Team Ramstein, and the global gateway. It’s very important that we all, each one of us, foster those relationships, continue to develop them, and grow so we can get after readiness and take care of our Airmen.

Q: Leadership comes with its challenges. How do you handle setbacks, and what do you do stay resilient in the face of adversity?

A: I’m going to revert back to

the A.R.T. There will be times when things might not necessarily go our way, but we need to look for the positives and embrace them. Then, we face our challenges, attack them with a positive attitude, and move forward. Anytime I encounter a setback, I usually try to take a deep breath, take a step back figuratively and literally, and then figure out how to take my two steps forward. I carry two toolboxes around. In one, there are all the things I’ve seen other leaders do that I think are phenomenal and I try to emulate. I put those in my “to-do” toolbox. And in the other toolbox are things that just didn’t work out so well or things I just didn’t appreciate that much. Those are things that I try to learn from and help me take a right turn instead of a left turn so I don’t make the same mistakes.

Q: Effective communication is key to a successful command.

What strategies are you implementing to ensure open lines of communication across all levels?

A: I have an open-door policy. I’m an email and a phone call away, but I think the most important thing is getting out and being visible. It’s important to be visible, shake my Airmen’s hands, and look them in the eye.

The other important aspect of authentic leadership is active listening. This means having a conversation with someone and actually hearing what they have to say instead of thinking of something else.

So, going forward, I want to be visible in the community. I really want to get out there. I told both my group and squadron commanders that I not only wanted to get to know them but also wanted to get to know their Airmen. I want to get out to your areas and work centers, see what everyone is doing, and have discussions.

Chief Ludwig and I are at the newcomer’s brief every Wednesday. Usually, after we are done giving some introductory remarks, I like to ask, “Hey, what’s on your mind? What are your questions, and what are your concerns?” That goes back to active listening. What the Airmen have to say really matters. We must take that into account. We may not have all the answers. There are definitely some things we aren’t able to do, but as long as we think about it, put our heads together and listen to our Airmen’s fantastic and innovative ideas so that together we can move forward.

Q: Do you have any parting thoughts for the team?

A: Readiness, Airmen, and relationships all tie together. In order for us to be ready, we have to take care of our Airmen — capital “A” Airmen. We must have the right relationships. I like to say, “Words matter,” but actions speak louder than words. So, we need to work together to take care of each other to take the Global Gateway to the next level.

The mission of the 86th Airlift Wing is to Defend U.S. interests, project power, and enable the Global Gateway.

An Airman’s journey on 9/11: Reflections on service, sacrifice

The weather in New York City was remarkably clear and calm. The sky was a pristine, deep blue, without a cloud in sight — a light breeze blowing gently, with the temperature approaching mid-to-high 60s. The morning of September 11, 2001, began as an ordinary day in a bustling metropolis known for its fastpaced lifestyle. Thousands of commuters started their journey into the city. Coffee shops, breakfast cafes, and delis opened early catering to the morning rush. Students arrived at schools and universities and attended their first class of the day.

The city was alive with the movement of millions of people going about their daily routines, unaware that this ordinary day would soon be transformed into one of the most tragic days in American history. The ordinary hustle and bustle of the morning, with its myriad of activities and routines, starkly contrasted with the unimaginable events that were about to unfold.

September 11, 2001, will forever change many lives.

Over 1,200 miles away, the then U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Bryant D. Roy was on leave in south Florida visiting his parents. Roy was excitedly waiting for his wife, Wylisha, to fly from Oklahoma so they could head to the University of Miami vs. University of Washington football game later that week.

Roy began his Air Force career in March 1995. In 2001, he had been

in the armed services for over six and a half years. He was working at the 966th Airborne Air Control Squadron stationed at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, as an Airborne Radar Technician instructor, flying on board the E-3 Airborne Early Warning aircraft. In simple terms, he is a Career Enlisted Aviator who taught and trained others to operate and maintain radar systems on the plane, which is crucial for detecting other aircraft, weather conditions, and ground features. Unbeknownst to him, his job was critical in the coming months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Roy’s immediate future drastically changed. He was sitting in his parent’s living room, swapping players on his Fantasy Football team, the television on to the right of him. He heard the news anchor say, “Now we go live to New York City, where there is breaking news.”

“I turn around as the television switches to a live feed of the first World Trade Center on fire,” Roy said. “It looked like where the KoolAid Man punches through the wall or how Bugs Bunny breaks through the ground. You could clearly see the outline of where the first plane had hit, dead on, in the middle of the World Trade Center. I could see the bright blue sky behind it, and here is a smoking hole right in the middle of the World Trade Center.”

He explains how he felt this attack was “absolutely intentional.”

“I said to my parents, within the first 30 seconds of watching the TV, ‘That’s a terrorist attack,’” Roy continued. “One hundred percent. That is what this is, a terrorist attack.”

As Roy and his parents are sitting there discussing this turn of events, they watch the second plane hit live, coming out from the corner of the screen.

“Within the hour, we started hearing about the flights that crashed into the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania,” Roy said. “That is when I started to put it together. There were no apps for flight trackers, and we didn’t have cell phones.”

With the overwhelming emotion of being appalled, powerless, and disgusted, Roy began thinking about his wife in the air, where, later that

day, he was supposed to pick her up from the airport.

When Wylisha landed in Atlanta, she called her husband to ask what was going on and why all the flights had been canceled.

“I was like, babe, you need to go look at a TV right now,” Roy stated before his wife hung up the phone call.

A few days later, Roy and Wylisha were reunited after days without her luggage and a long Greyhound bus trip down to Florida.

The morning of the attacks, Roy called back to his office in Oklahoma. Although not the answer he sought, his boss told him, “Sit tight for now.”

His team had some crews preparing to leave for the East Coast as part of what became known as Operation Noble Eagle.

Roy felt stuck… stuck at home, wanting… ready to return to work.

He finally got back to Oklahoma within the week and was directed to begin flying missions with his team.

“We were basically flying in a racetrack shape, up to New York and back down to D.C.,” Roy explained.

“Normally, you would see hundreds if not thousands of planes flying [on the radar]. But, outside of a few fighters and air refuelers, it was a completely clean air picture [on the screen].”

“I remember looking out the window and being able to look towards New York and still being able to see the smoke coming up from Manhattan,” he continued.

This was Roy’s life every day for five to six months after the attacks in the United States, but his primary job as an aircrew instructor did not stop there. His other mission was training new crewmembers to continue the forthcoming operations for years.

During the first years of the War on Terror, Roy served in the training unit America’s G-Flight, but almost all of the schoolhouse cadre wanted to fight.

“As we saw our students graduate and bring the war to the Taliban in the mountains of Afghanistan, especially supporting the coalition air and ground efforts in Operation Enduring Freedom,” Roy said. “It was a hard pill to swallow, and as hard-charging NCOs [non-commissioned officers] most of us felt left out of the direct action.”

Their primary mission was to train students and fly sorties to defend the homeland as part of Operation Noble Eagle.

“We eventually were able to contribute directly in many ways over the years, but during the first few, we had to take pride in the quality of the warfighters we were producing,” Roy continued. “Our former students, now proven technicians, would sometimes return to the schoolhouse following deployments to talk about some of the experiences and often became instructors themselves. All of us in G-Flight were united in that sense of pride, and to this day, it is one of the best work environments I ever served in. Although almost all of America’s G-Flight cadre have since left the Air Force, many remain in contact today. It was a special group, ironically, one I did not choose and instead, where my leadership placed me.”

Roy is now a chief master sergeant stationed at Ramstein Air Base, as the 86th Operations Group senior enlisted leader. He will retire in June 2025 after more than 30 years of selfless service.

“I still believe in our country,” Roy said. “It’s a place worth defending.”

ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

Do not succumb to the pressure of opening your oven while cooking. Your oven has to work overtime to compensate for the lost heat each time you open the oven door.

Tips:

1. Use the oven timer for proper cooking time or utilize the oven light.

2. If possible, switch off the oven earlier when baking and use the residual heat.

3. Not preheating also saves electricity.

4. Also, bake several dishes at a time to minimize oven usage.

5. Lastly, always de-frost food before putting it in the oven. This means that less heat and energy will be needed to cook it.

70 years of flight: C-130’s legacy, future

Since its first flight Aug. 23, 1954, the C-130 Hercules has proven to be one of the most versatile and active aircraft in the Air Force’s fleet, having carried troops and supplies from the tundra of Antarctica, to the deserts of the Middle East, to the tropical islands of the Pacific, and nearly everywhere in between.

Robins Air Force Base, host of the C-130 70th Anniversary celebration, has played a key role in keeping the C-130 fleet not just flying, but equipped with the technology and modernizations that make it a critical component of the contemporary Air Force fleet.

“It’s the greatest airplane ever built, and it’s stained honorably with American blood, sweat and tears,” said Gen. Mike Minihan, commander of Air Mobility Command. “That airplane is a monument to everyone that flies, fixes, and supports it … From the assembly line, to the flight line, to the depot line, it’s the hands that touch it that make it so powerful.”

The Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex at Robins AFB is the central hub for depot maintenance and modernization of the C-130. With 12 different C-130 models spread across seven major commands and the Air National Guard, totaling 436 aircraft in the Air Force fleet, effective and efficient maintenance is vital to keeping the mission running — especially in an era of Great Power Competition.

“We’re the best at what we do here,” said Ben Stuart, 560th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron director of operations. “The first flight was in 1954, and we’ve been doing depot maintenance on C-130s at Robins since 1964.

We’ve got mission partners with

the program office, engineering, the Defense Logistics Agency and Lockheed Martin,” Stuart continued. “That combination is what makes us the best in the business, and we have been doing it for 60 years. Nobody else in the world does the repair and overhaul work that we do here at Robins.”

Around 50 of the aircraft come through each year for maintenance, to include planned depot maintenance, unplanned depotlevel maintenance like battle damage repair, and modifications.

While Robins does significant C-130 work on the installation, the scope of its mission does not stop at the gates.

The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s C-130 engineering team regularly receives Engineering Technical Assistance Requests, where in-unit maintenance teams run into issues they are not able to solve on station. In 2023, the AFLCMC team received almost 3,500 ETARs, many of which resulted in the aircraft being grounded. In responding to these, Robins AFB coordinates with the home units to find a solution. When needed, engineers will deploy to the aircraft’s location to resolve the issue, keeping the global C-130 fleet flying and active.

As the Air Force calls on its members to reoptimize for Great Power Competition, the C-130 is being prepared for its next chapter. The call for reoptimization, the emphasis on Agile Combat Employment and the challenges of the Pacific theater mean that the C-130 will need to continue evolving.

“To survive and operate in that environment, it will absolutely be on the backs of our C-130s,” said Michael Beasley, the Mobility Directorate C-130 Hercules division senior materiel leader and retired

maintenance officer.

According to Beasley, one of the biggest challenges in reoptimizing for GPC is the logistical hurdles that come with the change in area of responsibility.

Beasley spoke on how flights in the Middle East were often short range, only lasting a few hours, with less concern for fuel and range management.

Moving to operations in the Pacific, with major hubs often thousands of miles apart with nothing but ocean in between, that sentiment has changed.

“In the past we never had to worry about that, right? We’re just flying from Ramstein Air Base, down to Iraq,” Beasley said. “We didn’t have to worry about that long term, or that margin at the end of the flight that says, ‘Man, I need to squeeze just another hour and a half out of this airplane.’

GPC has us thinking about how we can do that.”

From increases in engine power and efficiency, to new propellor technologies and weight reduction efforts, the modernization efforts of the C-130 are a series of upgrades that not only provide individual benefit but work in tandem to make the aircraft as effective as possible.

“We’re trying to squeeze out every bit of performance out of this airplane we can, because we know that we’re probably the bedrock of that ACE concept,” Beasley said. “Once we get everything in theater and we’re in the battle, what’s going to keep that battle alive are the C-130 tactical transports, getting that stuff from island to island.”

The C-130 has also seen a number of avionics upgrades aimed at increasing effectiveness in a connectivity-contested environment.

Two technologies being utilized are the Real-Time in Cockpit and Dynamic Retasking Capability systems. These allow the C-130 to receive key information from command-and-control communication systems, or C2CS, prior to entering a battle space and provides the ability to forward this information off to advance commanders. Not only does this increase the awareness of the air crew, but also acts as a force multiplier in expanding the reach of C2CS.

With 70 years of history as one of the most versatile and battletested aircraft in the Air Force fleet, the C-130 looks to enter its next era in the reoptimization for Great Power Competition – and just as Robins AFB has kept the aircraft flying the last seven decades, it will be sending out the aircraft to maintain air dominance for years to come.

Honoring Legacy of Women’s Equality Day: Voices of Women in 65th Air Base Group

Women’s Equality Day, observed annually on Aug. 26, is more than just a commemoration of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. It is a day to reflect on the journey women have taken toward equality, celebrate the progress made, and recognize the work that remains. For women in the U.S. Air Force, this day holds a profound significance, as it symbolizes not just a historical victory, but also an ongoing commitment to equality in a profession that demands resilience, courage, and leadership.

A commitment to equality and leadership

Colonel Carina Harrison, Commander of the 65th Air Base Group, sees Women’s Equality Day as a celebration of both historical progress and ongoing efforts towards gender equality. “This day underscores the achievements of women and fuels my drive to advance equal representation,” she explains.

Inspired by her mother and influential women who overcame significant challenges, Colonel Harrison’s career reflects a deep commitment to fostering inclu-

sion and support. Her leadership roles, including standing up in Lean In circles and contributing to the Women’s Air and Space Force Foundation, highlight her dedication to empowering others. She envisions a future where women’s roles in the Air Force continue to expand, bringing new perspectives and innovations. “I hope my career demonstrates that with passion and perseverance, we can achieve anything,” she adds.

Looking ahead, Colonel Harrison is excited about the potential for women to influence the Air Force’s future. “We are on the cusp of seeing even greater leadership and opportunities for women, and I am committed to paving the way for the next generation,” she says.

A personal reflection on equality and service

For Master Sergeant Ebonie Hills of the 65th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Lajes Field, Portugal, Women’s Equality Day serves as both a celebration and a call to action. “Women’s Equality Day is a profound reminder of the strength, resilience, and potential of women everywhere,” she shares. “As a woman serving in the U.S. Air Force, it symbolizes not just the recognition of our rights, but the celebration of our contributions

and sacrifices. And oftentimes, silent sacrifices.”

Hills draws inspiration from numerous women, both historical figures and those in her personal life. From Harriet Tubman and Dr. Maya Angelou to Michelle Obama and her own mother, she finds strength in their stories of perseverance and leadership. “My mother has been my pillar of strength and source of inspiration. Her perseverance drives the work ethic I have exhibited in my successful U.S. Air Force career. She is my hero.”

Throughout her career, MSgt. Hills has been a driving force for equality and inclusion, leading initiatives that foster resilience among Airmen. “My leadership style has taught me that together we can foster an environment where every woman, regardless of her background, can soar to her fullest potential. We must continue to prioritize self-care, uplift, support, and stand in solidarity,” she affirms, reflecting her deep commitment to driving positive change.

Empowering others through leadership and mentorship

Technical Sergeant Jessica Yelkovich, who served in the 496th Air Base Squadron at Morón Air Base, Spain, is dedicated to empowering others, especially in

environments where women are underrepresented. Reflecting on Women’s Equality Day, Yelkovich credits her upbringing for her strong work ethic and commitment to honesty and fairness. “I try to be the best version of me every day and empower everyone to be the best versions of themselves,” she shares.

As the only female active-duty member in her squadron during a Developmental Special Duty assignment as a Military Training Leader, Yelkovich ensured her female trainees received the respect they deserved. “I made sure my female Airmen were treated fairly and with respect,” she recalls, highlighting the challenges they faced in a tough training environment. Her leadership style, marked by vocal advocacy and tough love, was shaped by her experiences in male-dominated fields.

Looking ahead, Yelkovich is optimistic about the evolving role of women in the Air Force. “More women are being put in leadership roles, which I love to see. We just need to continue this,” she says, hoping to inspire the next generation of women to see that “we can do anything that a man can do.”

Breaking barriers in predominantly male fields

Reflecting on Women’s Equality

Day, TSgt. Mandelyn Cook-Jones of the 496th ABS sees it as a celebration of progress and the ongoing opportunities for women in maledominated fields. Her Air Force journey has been shaped by early mentorship from pioneers like MSgt. Michelle McCullough-Cruz (Retired), the first female senior non-commissioned officer in her career field, who guided her during her formative years at Kadena Air Base, Japan. “She mentored me as a young first-line supervisor, and I’ve carried that mentorship forward as I’ve advanced in rank,” Cook-Jones shares.

As a leader, TSgt. Mandelyn Cook-Jones has actively promoted diversity and inclusion, organizing Women’s History Month events at Morón Air Base that provided a platform for women to share their experiences and challenges in the military. “Whether you are a woman or a man in my chain of command, I will respect you both up and down the chain and across the ranks,” she asserts. Looking forward, Cook-Jones envisions expanded roles for women in both combat and leadership positions within the Air Force. Inspired by pioneers like Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne Bass, she reflects, “I hope I’ve empowered the younger female Airmen I’ve served with,” while

Women’s Equality Day, as celebrated by the 65th Air Base Group, highlights both the progress made and the ongoing pursuit of gender equality in the U.S. Air Force. Colonel Carina Harrison, Master Sergeant Ebonie Hills, Technical Sergeant Jessica Yelkovich and Technical Sergeant Mandelyn Cook-Jones see this day as a call to action, emphasizing the importance of leadership, mentorship, and breaking barriers. They draw inspiration from past trailblazers and are committed to fostering a more inclusive future where women play pivotal roles across all levels of the Air Force.

resonating with Bass’s belief that “self-care is not selfish.”

A shared vision for the future

As these women’s stories illustrate, Women’s Equality Day is not just a moment to reflect on the past — it is an opportunity to look forward, envisioning a future where equality is not just an aspiration but a lived reality. The role of women in the Air Force is evolving rapidly, and the next decade promises to see even greater strides in gender equality, driven by the leadership, mentorship, and determination of women like Col. Harrison, MSgt. Hills, TSgt. Yelkovich, and TSgt. Cook-Jones.

MSgt. Hills looks forward to a future where women “not only

occupy a broader range of leadership positions but also play pivotal roles in all operational capacities.” She believes that continued support for work-life balance and family-friendly policies will enhance women’s contributions and roles.

TSgt. Yelkovich acknowledges the progress made, stating, “We, as women, have come such a long way over these last few decades,” while referencing Ayn Rand’s quote, “The question isn’t who’s going to let me; it’s who’s going to stop me.”

TSgt. Cook-Jones reflects on the remarkable progress since 1948 and expresses gratitude for the ones that served in all branches of the military and have paved

the way to equality for women.

“Serving alongside our brothers in uniform is something I do not take lightly,” she says.

Colonel Carina Harrison sees Women’s Equality Day as a critical reminder to keep pushing for progress. “This day underscores the importance of advancing equal representation and breaking barriers in the Air Force,” she notes. Harrison’s commitment to leadership and mentoring reflects her dedication to shaping a more inclusive future.

Together, these voices remind us that the pursuit of equality is an ongoing mission, celebrated every day as women in the Air Force continue to inspire, lead, and break barriers.

Ramstein Air Base Chess Club

fosters learning, community

Nestled within the Ramstein Air Base Library, a unique gathering takes place twice a week where strategy, concentration and friendship come together over the timeless game of chess. Led by Senior Airman Joseph Williams from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, the chess club offers a welcoming environment for both beginners and seasoned players alike. Williams, a systems technician assigned to the 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron, joined the chess club shortly after his arrival at Ramstein.

“When I first got here, the previous director had a chess club going, but he was very busy. Since chess is one of my passions, I volunteered to help out and it grew from there,” Williams said. “Chess has been around for hundreds of years, but we still find new ways to improve and new strategies to explore. I love that aspect of it.”

The chess club meets every Monday and Thursday, with sessions tailored to different age groups. Lunchtime sessions cater to adults working on base, while the afternoon sessions from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. are designed for children. “The kids’ sessions are particularly rewarding,” Williams said. “It’s incredible to see them develop their skills, even though they might not always express it vocally. Teaching them has been a learning experience for me as well, as I’ve had to pay close attention to their cues and adjust my approach.”

One of the club’s members, eight-year-old Kepler, has been a regular attendee for three months.

“My favorite part is saying ‘checkmate,’” Kepler said.

Kepler’s father, Lewis Pesek, sees the chess club as a fantastic opportunity for his son to grow both intellectually and socially.

“He absolutely loves it. He’s got a thirst for knowledge, and playing chess here quenches that thirst,” Pesek said. “Learning from kids his age and from Airmen like Mr. Williams has been an awesome experience for him.”

Williams emphasized that chess is not just a game, but a tool for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

“Chess is a game for everyone. It’s never too late to start playing, and it offers countless benefits, especially in enhancing logical and critical thinking abilities,” Williams said. “It’s also a great way to bring people together, whether they’re learning or teaching, because each person’s understanding of chess brings something unique to the table.”

The Ramstein Air Base Library Chess Club is open to all ages and skill levels, offering a welcoming community where members can learn, grow, and share in the fun of chess.

For those interested in joining the chess club or learning more about the events at the Ramstein Library, stop by the library or check out the latest updates on the 86th Force Support Squadron’s Facebook page.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Soldiers complete ACFT, prioritize readiness

Story and photos by

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company Soldiers are ready for action! On Aug. 22, Capt. Rudolph “Trey” Smith III, HHC commander, along with Sgt. Shane Douglass and Spc. Jayden Brown took part in the Army Combat Fitness Test at the Functional Fitness Center on Rhine Ordnance Barracks.

The ACFT serves as the assessment for the physical domain of the Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness System. This general physical fitness test utilizes an age and gender performancenormed scoring scale to evaluate a Soldier’s physical fitness.

Recent updates to the test include performance-normed scoring standards tailored to age and gender, with the plank now designated as the sole core-strength event.

Smith said that the test is designed to reflect real combat scenarios, making it relevant and beneficial for Soldiers’ readiness.

“I believe the ACFT is important because it provides a better and more well-rounded assessment of physical fitness for Soldiers,” he said. “A Soldier’s strength, power, speed and stamina are all tested. With it being a “combat” focused fitness test, it provides scenarios that Soldiers could see during combat.”

The ACFT consists of six events: Maximum Dead Lift, Standing Power Throw, HandRelease Push Up, Sprint/Drag/ Carry, Plank, and the 2-Mile Run. To pass, Soldiers must achieve a minimum score of 60 points in each event, as outlined in the revised scoring tables.

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz serves, supports, and secures the total force community enabling power projection for the European Theater.

Outdoorsmen find passion in Rugby, Army life

Patrick Oglesbee grew up in the rural community of Glennville, Georgia, where hunting and fishing were a way of life and satisfying pastimes.

Emosi Bainivalu grew up on the rural, volcanic Fijian island of Taveuni where he fished and hunted wild chickens and boars.

Both boys were raised half a world apart. Both would eventually join the Army and play on the same rugby team.

This week, they played on the Army team, with matches against four of the other service teams at the Armed Forces Men’s Rugby Championship. Their team captured gold during the championship match in Glendale, Colorado, on Saturday.

Oglesbee had dreamed of going to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. He studied hard and was accepted, receiving his second lieutenant commission in May.

A good fit for team Army, Oglesbee scored a hat trick against the Marine Corps team on Friday, the first day of the matches. A hat trick is when a rugby player scores at least three tries in a game. A try is the rugby equivalent of a touchdown in football.

When asked how he prepares himself for rugby matches, Oglesbee said that besides working out and thinking strategically, he always says a prayer and “leaves everything in the hands of God.”

Oglesbee is stationed at West Point, where he works in the academy’s athletic department. Later, he will go to job training in the communications field.

Bainivalu won the green card lottery in 2012, which is a U.S. government program that provides a limited number of visas

to applicants from countries with low immigration rates with the goal of creating a more diverse U.S. society.

After arriving in the United States in 2014, he decided to enlist in the Army in 2016 and began playing rugby in the All-Army Sports Program in 2017.

Besides being in excellent physical shape, Bainivalu said he plays every match as if it were the championship match, never easing up or letting his guard down.

About once every three years, he returns to Taveuni to visit his parents and other relatives and to

ride his three horses.

Army Sgt. Bainivalu is a motor transport mechanic based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He’s been deployed to Thailand and the Philippines as part of Exercise Cobra Gold. He also deployed to South Korea for nine months.

KALMIT KLAPPRAD CUP, READY FOR KLAPP OFF

SEP. 7, 3 P.M., MAIKAMMER/KALMIT

Bicycle fans listen up! Have you ever heard of a “Klapprad?” This is a folding bike with small tires and no gears that was rather popular in the 1970’s. Every year, a race with these nostalgic vehicles takes place up the hill to Kalmit, while contestants are in costume. This year the slogan is flying, so Klapp Air Flight KKC-2024 will take off at 3:00 p.m. at Maikammer Vineyard International Airport and the “flycyclists” will ease their way up the hill non-stop for 600 meters to Kalmit Heights Airfield. Don’t miss out on this spectacular and very extraordinary event! Details: http://www.kalmit-klapprad-cup.de/

WEINMARKT 2024 (WINE MARKET)

UNTIL SEP. 8, CITY PARK, MAINZ

Mainz will present itself from its most beautiful side: the Mainz wine market in the city park attracts numerous winemakers and exhibitors from the region on two weekends. During the popular event guests can stroll around the grounds and taste their personal wine selection from participating winemakers. For those interested in art and anyone who simply wants to be inspired, the popular artists’ market will take place in the rose garden. Handmade treasures such as jewelry, ceramics and woodwork are offered at numerous stands.

WINE FESTIVAL BINGEN

UNTIL SEP. 9, BINGEN/RHEIN

Another Rheinhessen-awarded event is the Bingen Wine Festival at the apex of the Rhein and Nahe Rivers, which offers visitors products from the local wineries. For 11 days, the people of Bingen celebrate the artistry of their winemakers, making it the longest wine festival along the Rhein! The extensive program makes time fly: there is live music every day, several fireworks light up both Klopp Castle and the banks of the Nahe, the traditional parade rolls leisurely and yet sublimely through the city center, the amusement park near Hindenburg complex attracts fun and adventure.

HOMBURG FLEA AND ANTIQUES MARKET

SEP. 7, 8 A.M.–4 P.M., FORUM/LANDRATSAMT, HOMBURG

The biggest flea market in southwest Germany, always takes place on the first Saturday of the month. The flea market was launched in 1975 and has developed into the largest in southwest Germany. Traders and customers find opportunities to sell and buy goods from January to November. The flea market has

become the top address for customers from France, Luxembourg and Belgium, and all this makes the flea market a tourist attraction. Further dates: Oct. 12, Nov. 2, Dec. 7 (Christmas Flea Market)

WURSTMARKT (WINE FEST)

SEP. 6–10/13–16, FAIR GROUNDS/CITY CENTER, BAD DÜRKHEIM

Said to be the largest wine festival in the world, the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt (sausage market) is yet another highlight that lures guests to the German Wine Route for 9 days and nights with an extensive program. Delicious specialties from the Palatinate are offered to you almost everywhere and around 300 wines and sparkling wines from the entire region await you - there will certainly be one or two drinks for you with which you can enjoy the evening musical fireworks! The event is rather popular among KMC members and invites you to celebrate. However, beware: the Polizei is out there. Special trains will be running from Kaiserslautern, so hop on and enjoy the festivities, but make sure to get home safely!

DISCOVERY TOUR IN ENGLISH

SEP. 7, 11:15 A.M., CASIMIR SAAL (CITY HALL), KAISERSLAUTERN

It is approximately 1.5 hours and leads through the underground illuminated tunnel with information and sound effects about the history of Kaiserslautern. The meeting point is the Tourist Information Office, next to Fruchthalle. Bookings are required at 0631 - 365 –4019 or per email: touristinformation@kaiserslautern.de

HERBSTMARKT MIT WEINDORF (AUTUMN MARKET WITH WINE VILLAGE)

SEP. 7–16, CITY CENTER, LANDAU

The Landau autumn market, between the two major dates in Bad Dürkheim and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, invites you to its traditional wine village in the south of the Pfalz in mid-September. Between the Ferris wheel, roller coaster, carousel and grocery stalls, the main focus of the folk festival is the famous regional hospitality - here you can sway, sing and laugh! And since the Palatinate festivals are always designed to be barrierfree for everyone, everyone can take part in the fun. Culinary delights are not neglected either: in the festival mile, jokingly known as Fressgasse, you can expect original and modern interpretations of hearty Pfalz cuisine, regional winemakers are also happy to offer their best products. The diverse varieties of the Southern Wine Route are particularly impressive: In addition to Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Rivaner, a total of 71 white and 52 red grape varieties are cultivated here.

OKTOBERFEST

SEP. 21–OCT. 6, THERESIENWIESE, MUNICH

The world’s largest beer fest is scheduled to start with the parade of the brewery horses and tapping of the keg on Sat. 16. Large tents with music and Bavarian Händl (rotary chicken), a multitude of exciting rides, vendors, food, drinks and sweets invite international guests to 17 days of lively Bavarian spirit. Local tour operators also offer tour packages to the event.

KINDERALTSTADTFEST

SEP. 21., 12 A.M.–5 P.M., STOCKHAUSPLATZ/PLATZ DER KINDERRECHTE, KAISERSLAUTERN

Since 1996, the Children’s Old Town Festival has been celebrated in Kaiserslautern every year on the occasion of World Children’s Day. The festival will take place on Saturday in the area from Stockhausplatz to Kaiserbrunnen. The Children’s Old Town Festival guarantees a colorful program with lots of fun and action, and is a wonderful experience for children and their companions. The topic “refugee children”according to Article 22 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is the focus of this year’s Children’s Rights Week.

ABC IN KMC: Tricentennial Kerwe Ramstein

Happy Anniversary!

The Union Community of Ramstein-Miesenbach was founded Apr. 22, 1972, and celebrated its 50th anniversary two years ago. This year marks another year of celebration, the awe-inspiring 300th anniversary of its Kerwe!

Ramstein-Miesenbach is best known as being the host community to Ramstein Air Base since 1951 and is comprised of the four individual communities Hütschenhausen, Kottweiler-Schwanden, Niedermohr and Steinwenden, as well as the City of Ramstein-Miesenbach itself. In 1991 the City of RamsteinMiesenbach was granted its city rights and can look upon a rich history of ever-changing situations.

There are traces of a settlement prior to the Roman era along the old west-east road, located north of the West Palatinate moorland. Ceramic and coin findings and the remains of a villa near the Unterschernauer Mill are reminiscent of a settlement during the Roman era about 2,000 years ago.

CROSSWORD

Ramstein was first officially mentioned in a certificate dated Jun. 2, 1215, when emperor Friedrich II, grandson of Friedrich Barbarossa, granted the patronage of the mother church to Ramstein and of two daughter churches in Weilerbach and Spesbach to Reinhard of Lautern. In the late 14th century Ramstein became a part of the “Kurpfalz” (Electoral Palatinate) as a part of Bavaria.

During the Thirty Years’ War 1618-1648, Ramstein and the surrounding villages were depopulated, and people only gradually began to re-settle. By 1684, nine families were accounted for and by 1802 the population had increased to 368. The original church on the school hill was destroyed and fell to the Protestants at the end of the 17th century. In 1718 Ramsteiner Catholics regained ownership of their church and began reconstructing the ruins.

The church along with a cemetery was completed and consecrated Sep. 10, 1724, and a Kirchweih was celebrated in honor of the occasion. Ever since then, the people of Ramstein have been celebrating

their church festival on the third Sunday in September, this year from Sep. 13–17.

A further church in the city center, St. Nikolaus was built and completed in 1903. The original sacral building on the hill had become too small for the growing community, was weather-torn and demolished except for the tower, which eventually collapsed in 1916. The columbarium, an urn church with 2,000 urns, was established in its place in 2023, based on construction plans

of the initial church by Dr. Werner and Maria Heinrich.

The celebration grounds have also moved to the city center and an initially religious oriented celebration has evolved into a lively town festival throughout time. Ramsteiners and visitors alike can enjoy a typical Kerwe with rides and music, food and drinks, a Kerwestrauss (a colorful handbound pole with streamers) and lots of fun for family and friends, not to forget the annual silly

speech on a ladder and the parade on Sunday.

The Straussjugend (a group of youngsters organizing the event) are working on a few special activities for the anniversary. The weekend event kicks off on Friday evening when rides start at 6 p.m. and the Straussjugend meet for the “calibration” at 9 p.m. with numerous former Straussjugend participants, followed by live music with “Hüttenrocker.”

Tapping of the keg will be on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., followed by live music with “Strassenmusikanten” and fireworks at 9:45 p.m. On Sunday rides will pick up at 1 p.m. and line up for the parade at 2 p.m., which will circle around town and end for the “Kerwerede.” Monday starts with “Frühschoppen” and the Straussjugend will sing at the market fountain at 7 p.m. On Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. the Straussjugend will meet for the last time to “bury” the Kerwe. Don’t miss out on the fun, join the festive weekend and help Ramsteiners celebrate the tricentennial!

Why tidal flats matter

Tidal flats are a big part of Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park; in fact, they make up 70 percent of the park! But let’s back up a minute. Why are tidal flats, which can look like, well, massive stretches of mud, important, and why are they worth seeing?

First, tidal flats provide homes for all sorts of wildlife. Birds love them, mostly because the food is so good there. The flats in Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park positively teem with food sources like snails, which birds (and even some humans) adore. Even if you’re not a birder, it can be amazing to see literally millions of ducks, geese, gulls, and other sorts of shorebirds in their natural habitat.

More importantly, though, tidal flats are important for understanding the human impact on shorelines — and in figuring out ways to mitigate that impact so that humans can continue to live on shorelines. This is no small thing: according to the UN, approximately 40 percent of the world’s population lives on or within 100 kilometers of a coast. So what happens — or doesn’t — at Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park has global ramifications for researchers.

Having fun at Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park

Fun fact: less than 4 percent of the park is non-mudflat land, which means that it forces those of us who don’t have wings or gills to get creative when visiting. Never fear! There are plenty of ways to have a good time in and around the park. Here are four ideas for places to start.

1. See an artificial island… from a distance. Another fun fact: The park has three islands, and one of them is artificial. Nigehörn, the little island that could, was built in 1989 to help protect its sister island Scharhörn from the ravages of erosion. The plan worked! The 74-acre baby island has grown to 120 acres since its inception, and has helped strengthen Scharhörn. Neither of the islands are accessible to visitors, but you should definitely take them in by boat, if only to say you’ve seen one of Germany’s best engineering feats.

2. Visit the island of Neuwerk. Even though it isn’t far from the coast and has been culturally and economically

attached to Hamburg for more than 700 years, the island of Neuwerk feels like something from a different world. This could be because it only has 40 or so residents, a smattering of charming restaurants, a lighthouse, and a cool national park center. Or it could be because it’s so small (1.2 square miles) that a determined hiker could probably use it for speed lap practice. Speaking of hiking: truly dedicated folks can actually walk to the island. Remember those mud flats? When the tide is low and the weather is good, it’s only a 7-mile walk to get there. Otherwise, ferry options are available from nearby Cuxhaven.

3. Visit Bremen, Hamburg, or both. Two of Germany’s best northern cities are located within an easy drive of Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park. Bremen is a historic, thriving, and energetic university city that is only an hour from Cuxhaven. Hamburg is one of Germany’s best and biggest cities: it has museums, an excellent nightlife, tons of stuff to do with kids, and a fantastic harbor. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Getting to Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park By car, the park is approximately 6.5 hours from Kaiserlsautern, 7 hours from Stuttgart, and 6 hours from Wiesbaden. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
