Two U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortresses conducted the bomber aircraft’s first-ever live weapons drop in Sweden on March 11 during Bomber Task Force mission VIKING NEBULA.
The mission also included a low-formation flyover of the Swedish Parliament to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Sweden’s accession to NATO.
The flyover, coordinated with Swedish defense officials, highlights the strong security cooperation between Sweden, the United States, and other NATO air forces. Bomber Task Force missions provide critical opportunities to integrate and train with regional partners.
Sweden’s partnership has been crucial to the success of our Bomber Task Force operations,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Kendall “Spartan” Smith, U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Bomber Task Force chief. “Access to their airspace, logistical support and seamless integration with U.S. bomber aircraft have made joint missions more efficient and effective.”
During the mission, the aircraft were escorted by two Swedish
JAS 39 Gripens to the Vidsel Test Range, where they released GBU38 joint direct attack munitions. Ground support was provided by U.S. and Swedish Joint Terminal Attack Controllers. The mission reinforced coordination between air and ground units, refining precision strike capabilities in a new, complex training environment. “Through detailed planning and deliberate coordination, we’ve built a stronger coalition with our Arctic Allies to hone our collective ability to deploy large, combat-credible forces and strengthened NATO’s deterrence capabilities in the High North,” Smith said.
The B-52s and aircrew are currently deployed with the 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron at RAF Fairford, England, where they continue to execute operations alongside NATO Allies and partners across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, bolstering collective lethality and improving integration.
VIKING NEBULA marks the eleventh operation completed during this BTF iteration.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, Col. Jeffery Higgins, hosted the winter Real Property Planning Board Council of Colonels Engagement Meeting at the workforce development center, Sembach, Feb. 18. The RPPB is a forum for the garrison to align infrastructure priorities with tenant unit and mission partner leaders while incorporating forecasted personnel growth, organizational changes and the Army’s modernization efforts.
Higgins said the Council of Colonels meeting is a key step in the process of building real property plans aligned with the priorities of the Senior Responsible Officer, Maj. Gen. Ronald Ragin, 21st Theater Security Command commander, and the Senior Commander, Gen. Christopher Donahue, U.S. Army Europe and Africa commander.
“This is where leaders engage in open dialogue, much like a city council meeting, to make informed decisions that will directly impact the future of our installations,” Higgins said.
The full RPPB takes place in the spring, where the garrison team, tenant unit leaders and mission partners formally present their agreed-upon project priorities to the SRO and SC. These priorities are then integrated into the overall garrison Facility Investment Plan listing.

Service members stationed at Sembach Kaserne just got a major quality of life upgrade! Until now, nearly 300 service members living on Sembach Kaserne had limited access to essential items outside of traditional Exchange hours. The new 24/7 Minimarket changes that — offering Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardians, and civilians around-the-clock access to food, drinks, medication, personal hygiene items, and more. Sustaining the force isn’t just about convenience — it’s about readiness. When service members have what they need to stay focused, fueled, and fit for duty, they’re better prepared to execute the mission. Quality of life upgrades like this directly enhance warfighting capabilities, because a well-supported force is a stronger force!

Being promoted to noncommissioned officer is an important achievement and milestone for any Soldier but being promoted to noncommissioned officer during the Army’s 250th birthday year is particularly special.
Army Spc. Maggie Wilson was promoted to corporal March 10 at Daenner Kaserne’s NCO Field in Kaiserslautern. She said to be entrusted by her leadership and the Army and be promoted to noncommissioned officer during the Army’s special 250th birthday year is truly extraordinary.
“I hadn’t really thought about it until today,” said the newly promoted human resources NCO at the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s administration and human resources directorate (S-1). “Two hundred and fifty years? I do take a lot of pride in that. It’s going to be a cool story to tell down the line. Happy 250th birthday, U.S. Army!”

Across the entire force, there will only be a small percentage of Soldiers promoted to corporal or sergeant this year, said Wilson, who graduated from the Basic Leader Course in Grafenwoehr, March 7. To be one of them is unique, she said, adding that she hopes to be promoted to sergeant in the next month or two while the points for her military occupational specialty stay relatively low.
Wilson is 22 years old and originally from Chicago. She will have four years of activeduty Army service this August, and she’s reenlisted for four more March 13. “That’s a lot,” Wilson admits — a BLC graduation, a promotion to corporal, and a four-year reenlistment — all in a week. But she’s always up for a challenge, she said.
“A strong foundation built on character, the Army Values, the NCO Creed, and all the leadership skills I gained during BLC — these are things that didn’t come naturally for me before joining the Army. But now — through BLC and various situations throughout my career — I’m able to tap
a lot in one week,” said the human resources NCO at the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s administration and human resources directorate (S-1).
into them. It’s amazing how much I’ve grown personally and professionally in a short timeframe,” said Wilson.
Wilson has nothing but positive things to say about her experiences in the Army so far, and more positivity is on the horizon, she said. Wilson is set to be assigned to the 519th Field Hospital under 30th Medical Brigade, soon.
“It could be next week. It could be next month. Those decisions are above me,” said Wilson, who is assigned to 21st Theater Sustainment Command and attached to the 405th AFSB.
“Being a 42A [human resources specialist] is rewarding in ways I never thought about,” said Wilson. “And working in a career enhancing position with the 405th AFSB provides me with a different perspective. The people here are great. I feel very supported. I know that if I were to ever need anything I could call Mr. [Venice] Jones or anyone in the S-1 office, and I would be good to go. That’s a good feeling.”
The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment
Command and headquartered in Kaiserslautern. The brigade provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa — providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces.

Army and Navy barracks may one day be 3D printed or built using mass timber construction that involves large wooden structural beams manufactured from smaller lumber.
Dave Morrow, director of military programs for Army Corps of Engineers, and Keith Hamilton, chief engineer for Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command, met with lawmakers from the House appropriations committee, subcommittee on military construction, veterans affairs, and related agencies, to discuss the current and potential future uses of innovative construction techniques and technologies by the armed forces, on Capitol Hill, March 12.
Additive construction — 3D printing buildings — high performance cement and concrete mixes, geosynthetics, mass timber, composite materials, industrialized construction, tension fabric structures and carbon fiber reinforced polymers were all part of the discussion with lawmakers about how the Army and Navy can develop the most cost efficient and resilient military construction projects.
“In an increasingly complex global security environment, our commitment to innovation in military construction is not just about building structures, it’s about building the resilience and readiness our forces need to prevail,” Morrow
said. “By working with industry to leverage these advancements, we can deliver more durable, sustainable and cost-effective infrastructure for our military, ensuring taxpayer dollars are used efficiently, while equipping our troops with the best facilities in the world.”
The Army Corps of Engineers, Morrow said, has already piloted 3D printed construction at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, and Fort Bliss, Texas. At Fort Bliss, three new projects involving barracks were constructed using 3D printing technology.
Morrow said this technology can be used in garrison or in expeditionary environments.
“Additive construction has [the] potential to reduce costs, manpower, logistics and time, while opening the door for improved and new applications, such as unconventional countermeasures,” he told lawmakers.
The USACE’s Engineer Research and Development Center has played a part in the development of unified facilities criteria, to allow additive construction in 80 percent of the United States, Morrow said. The criteria, developed jointly, sets basic technical requirements that must be followed to deliver code-compliant, complete and usable military facilities.
In Hampton Roads, Virginia, the Navy is now piloting the use of mass timber, also called cross-laminated timber, for construction of a child development center, Hamilton said.
In testimony submitted to the committee, Hamilton said the new facility will use a hybrid mass timber exterior envelope consisting of cross-laminated walls and diaphragms.
“DOD has expressly acknowledged the applicability of CLT with the creation of a guide specification,” Hamilton said. “As the CLT construction industry matures, CLT may prove more competitive and could be utilized more broadly in DOD construction.”
The USACE is also working with mass timber projects, Morrow said.
“We recently designed the Army’s first barracks made primarily with mass timber structural elements and are soliciting interest in construction of a project at Mountain Home Air Force Base,
ID, calling for the incorporations of mass timber design,” he said, adding that mass timber construction in those projects may reduce construction timelines.
At Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, NAVFAC was involved in piloting the use of high-performance concrete to build a new F-35 Lighting II hanger, Hamilton told lawmakers.
Advancements within HPC include durability, strength, and resistance to extreme environmental conditions, as well as improved thermal and acoustic properties.
“HPC has been used extensively for our piers, runways and other critical infrastructure; and we are broadening its application,” Hamilton wrote in submitted testimony.
Like USACE, Hamilton said, NAVFAC is looking to newer technologies to provide better facilities and better capabilities to warfighters.
“NAVFAC is actively testing and employing innovative technologies, materials and methods for design and construction today, and we are leaning forward to increase collaboration with industry, academia and other government partners to identify and leverage future opportunities,” Hamilton said.
Within the Navy, he told lawmakers, new guidance requires NAVFAC planners and engineers to evaluate if new military construction projects can use alternative construction methods to meet warfighting requirements, lower costs and accelerate project delivery.

From selection to retirement, elite multipurpose canines are the silent Green Berets who don’t always bask in the spotlight but are equally deserving of it.
These four-legged warriors of the Army Special Forces undergo rigorous vetting, endure the same hardships as their human teammates and retire with the dignity of professionals. Their careers mirror those of the special operators they serve alongside, forging bonds that often transcend their time in the military.
In the shadows of America’s most exclusive fighting force, these dogs prove that courage, loyalty and sacrifice aren’t exclusive to the men and women who wear the uniform — a testament to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s warfighting focuses on meritocracy, standards and lethality.
For one Special Forces dog handler — an 18D medic whose identity remains classified, like that of his canine partner — the connection with his dog is as much a brotherhood as any forged among the soldiers of his team.
“He’s a … soldier himself,” the handler said. “He gets a seat in the vehicle, a seat in the helicopter and he’s as much a member of the team as anyone else.”
He’s also a gifted tracker whose natural talent elevates him above his peers and has earned him an exclusive position within the Army’s special operations community, his handler said.
The journey begins with a selection process not unlike the grueling assessments faced by human candidates aspiring to join the Special Forces community. Before a canine sets a paw in the Army Special Forces kennels, the dog undergoes a battery of evaluations that include
X-rays, physical exams and behavioral screenings.
“They get screened just like we do,” the handler said.
The goal is to identify Belgian Malinois with the physical resilience and mental clarity to thrive in the chaos of special operations — a rigorous standard aligned with the defense secretary’s vision.
Not every dog makes the cut. Some assessments reveal health issues — hidden until the strain of leaping from helicopters or sprinting toward enemy combatants takes its toll. Others lack the temperament to balance aggression with control. Army Special Forces seek a rare breed that’s levelheaded yet fierce, capable of biting a combatant on command while remaining calm under pressure.
“We’re going against hundreds of years of breeding that taught dogs not to bite humans,” the handler said. “But we need them to do it professionally — until I say, ‘no more.’”
Much like a soldier overcoming the instinct to avoid violence,
these dogs are trained to channel their prey drive into precision. The result is a canine operator that can lock onto a target with unwavering focus, holding steady until the mission demands otherwise.
Once selected, canines integrate into Army Special Forces as fullfledged team members. They ride alongside their handlers in planes, helicopters and wheeled vehicles, their presence accounted for in every plan.
“You don’t plan for the dog to be on the floor,” the handler said. “He gets a seat.”
This isn’t just a courtesy — it’s a recognition of the dog’s role. They are assets, trained in explosive detection, tracking and apprehension, often deployed on directaction raids where split-second decisions mean life or death.
The parallels to their human counterparts deepen in combat.
Just as Green Berets face the unnatural stress of gunfire and explosions, their dogs endure the same.
“It’s not natural for a dog to be around that,” the handler admits.
The demanding nature of their service can leave a lasting impact on these courageous dogs. Some, after enduring multiple deployments, return profoundly altered, unable to carry on. Others, scarred by the intense pressures of even a single tour, find themselves needing a different kind of life away from the frontlines. Their struggles serve as a poignant reminder of their sensitivity and the invisible wounds they carry.
Still, many dogs soldier on, their intelligence and work ethic shining through.
The dogs have high IQs and learn to associate stressors — like the roar of a helicopter — with the job, thriving in the pack mentality of the team, the handler said.
“Everyone smells the same, dresses the same, gives off the same endorphins,” he said. “The dog knows we’re going to work, and they love it.”
The physical toll of life on a Special Forces team is equally
humanlike. The dogs break teeth, rip toenails and jam necks chasing down threats with blatant disregard for their well-being. Preventative surgeries are standard procedure. When injuries occur veterinary services mirror the actions of medics who patch up their two-legged teammates.
When a canine’s service ends, the parallels between their human counterpart persists. Retirement isn’t a haphazard affair — it’s a deliberate transition, reflecting the canine’s contributions to the team.
Dogs too rattled for further Special Forces missions often move on to serve in conventional units — like Air Force security forces — where they patrol bases in less strenuous environments. Others find new purpose with law enforcement, their explosive-detection skills still sharp. For those too damaged by service — physically or mentally — retirement means a quieter life, often with their handlers.
For this particular handler’s own dog, retirement looms. After years of surgeries and kennel rest at the handler’s home — where he’s a family member — the transition promises to be seamless.
“My kids know him, my wife knows him, my other dogs know him,” he said. “He’ll have no trouble becoming a couch dog.”
The deepest parallel lies in the relationships these dogs forge. For the Army Special Forces handler, his canine is more than a system — he’s a partner and friend.
Bringing the dog home during recovery periods has blurred the lines between duty and family.
“Since I started working with dogs, I’ve become accustomed to that lifestyle,” he said. “My canine inspired me to continue service through some of my toughest years in uniform. He’s as responsible for my success as anyone else on my team.”

The United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, is designed as a crucible to test cadets and turn them into commissioned leaders of character prepared for a career of professional excellence in the U.S. Army.
If those young cadets are competitive athletes on the West Point golf team, however, the dark and cold winter months at West Point can be particularly challenging.
“There’s a period from January to about April, sometimes May, where color does not exist on the Hudson River,” said Capt. Nick Turner, an aviation Basic Officer Leadership Course instructor with 1st Battalion, 145th Aviation Regiment, Fort Novosel, Alabama.
“You walk outside and it’s gray everywhere: there’s gray buildings, gray trees, gray souls [laughs], gray faces, everything. And there’s no golf, it’s always freezing.”
Members of “The Long Gray Line” must consistently balance rigorous academic requirements with their military duties. It was in these circumstances that Turner first met Capt. Peter Kim, now an artillery observer controller/trainer with the 188th Infantry Brigade, Fort Stewart, Georgia, and Capt. Justin Williamson, a company commander with the 326th Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Kim, then a senior, was a captain on the golf team when Williamson reported for his plebe year and Turner returned for his second year at West Point.
“New guys on the team, it’s always nice to see some fresh faces [and] see what they can do out there,” Kim said. “These guys were pretty high-ranked, and they were playing some really good golf coming in.”
Williamson, who’s father is a Navy veteran, recalled seeing an Army-Navy golf competition that initially got him interested in attending the USMA.
“I did a visit down at the Naval Academy and did a visit up at West Point,” Williamson said. “And I went to West Point because on my visit I was really impressed with the golf team and how they were very humble, but strove for excellence, and that was the kind of culture I wanted to be in.”
Turner also attended an ArmyNavy tournament the previous year, which contributed to his decision to commit to the Army.

“Winning matters, it doesn’t matter how you put it,” Kim said. “Playing good is great, but winning means so much to me personally because it’s on behalf of the Army, being able to represent the Army, [and] being able to stay on top. It makes me proud to know that I did something for the Army.”
Williamson and Turner both had the same response when asked how it felt seeing Kim come away with the top spot for Army: “Normal.”
“We’ve been convincing him to play [competitive] golf for so long, and he’s so good,” Turner said. “Watching him shoot 70, 68, 71, 73 is like normal for him, so the fact that he was able to pull that out today was awesome to see.”
thing bigger than yourself,” Turner said. “That’s why we all wanted to be a part of the team, as well as refining yourself and who you are as a person to serve the nation.”
Through the following year, the cadet golfers would play in numerous competitions together, meet President Trump at one of his golf courses, and spend countless hours together in the classroom, off campus, and traveling for golf tournaments.
However, the Army goes rolling along. The three cadets, now activeduty officers, would communicate sparingly over the first few busy years in their military careers.
“Obviously, just things happening in the Army, whether you’re bogged down in command, or you’re flying, or, you know, I’m just somewhere in the woods trying to blow something up,” Kim said with a laugh. “It’s kind of hard to try to keep contact sometimes, at least from my perspective.”
That is, until the 2025 Armed Forces Sports Golf Championship. Teams of six men and four women from each service component competed Feb. 24-28 at the Legends Golf Course, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.
Kim, Turner, and Williamson made the All-Army Sports team after the Army competition and had a chance to reconnect after several years of Army service.
“I walked up and saw them on the range, and it was like nothing changed. It felt like we were playing his [Kim’s] senior year,” Turner said. “That’s the uniqueness of the brotherhood: Like, we may text each other three times, four times, in the past five, six years, but it doesn’t matter. You show back up
and you’re right back to where you were at.”
That camaraderie bleeds off the course and contributes to a greater understanding of their different roles and experiences in their first years of military service, Kim adds.
“Sometimes I just pick at their brains, like the other day I asked Justin ‘hey, how many people are in your company?’, because I know for a [field artillery] battery we don’t have a whole lot,” Kim said. “We all have very different jobs in the military, but coming back together and reminiscing on the experiences that we’ve had and just making this one another great experience is what I wanted out of this for sure.”
The competition is also a chance for the Army captains to sharpen their competitive edge, which helps contribute to their overall effectiveness on the battlefield.
“I think any time that you go out and compete, no matter what the sport is, you’re sharpening your-
self and putting yourself in pressurized situations and seeing how you do,” Williamson said. “I think that directly translates to work, so any time you go out and experience that and put yourself in those situations, it makes you better at your job.”
The Legends Golf Course is rated as a par-72 course, meaning that a professional golfer is expected to end an 18-hole round with a final recorded score of 72 strokes. Scoring better than this mark is called “shooting below par.”
Kim, Williamson, and Turner all shot below par at least once during the four days of competition, beating the professional standard.
After a grueling back-and-forth battle with two Marine Corps competitors on the final day of tournament play, Kim was awarded the gold medal in the men’s individual division with a final overall score of 282. Williamson and Turner weren’t far behind, finishing with scores of 288 and 296, respectively.
Kim wasn’t the only Soldier who left Parris Island with a win. The Army women’s team ended their week with a championship of their own on the Marine Corps’ turf. Cpt. Lauren Theilen, Cpt. Carleen Schumacher, Sgt. Hansol Koo, and Sgt. Brittany Lindesmith combined for a gross score of 606 to clinch the championship. Thielen clinched the silver medal in the women’s individual competition.
The All-Marines men’s team took home the gold from the men’s team competition for the first time ever, recording a gross score of 1459.
The top six men and top three women, including Kim, Williamson, and Thielen, were named to the U.S. Armed Forces Golf Team. Team USA will compete at the 16th edition of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire, or CISM, World Military Golf Championship at the Diamond Leisure Beach & Golf Resort, Kwale, Kenya from June 22-29.
CISM seeks to promote sport in armed forces across the world, foster confidence and cohesion amongst service members internationally, and contribute to the fitness and motivation of service members.

EXHIBIT: OPERATION VITTLES
MARCH 23, DOCU CENTER RAMSTEIN
The Berlin Airlift is still considered one of the most impressive humanitarian air supply operations in history. During the Berlin Blockade of 1948-1949, when the Soviet Union closed all land and water routes to West Berlin, the USA, Great Britain and France supplied the occupied city with essential goods from the air in record time. More than two million tons of goods ended up in West Berlin. The “raisin bombers” became a symbol of solidarity and hope around the world. The traveling exhibition at the Allied Museum in Berlin provides an overview of the history of this aid campaign. The DCR takes a look at the role of the 86th Fighter Bomber Wing as an escort for the deployed transport aircraft as well as the role of the Labor Service Unit. The 86th Airlift Wing Historian Office also contributed with photos and documents. The exhibition is open daily from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. from March 22 to June 29 (except Mondays).

Our next stop on our tour around Kaiserslautern County leads us to the Union Community of Weilerbach. We invite you to discover interesting and maybe not-so-wellknown facts about your home away from home.
The current Union Community of Weilerbach consists of the individual towns and villages of Erzenhausen, Eulenbis, Kollweiler, Mackenbach, Reichenbach-Steegen, Rodenbach, Schwedelbach and Weilerbach as the administrative seat. The total union community has 14,300 inhabitants and an additional 5,000 members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community also call it their home.
Churches, a customs station and Bavaria
The town of Weilerbach was first mentioned in a certificate in 1214 when King Friedrich II granted Reinhard von Lautern patronage rights to the churches in Ramstein, Weilerbach and Spesbach. Throughout time Weilerbach was governed by various royal families, from 1559 to 1592 it belonged to Pfalz Lautern, then up to the 18th century was part of the Kurpfalz (Electorate Palatinate). At an intersection of roads the community also served as a customs station. After changing governments and under French rule from 1798 to 1814, it then became a part of Bavaria. After World War II Weilerbach became a separate community in the newly established State of Rheinland-Pfalz.
From the 18th to the early 20th centuries, employment was scarce in a rural area. Therefore, many talented musicians roamed the region playing music, often traveling with circuses and acrobats. Some even emigrated to the United States, where they formed the “Mackenbacher” music organization. It is noted that some became very successful and wealthy, and prestigious houses in Mackenbach are reminiscent of the wandering musicians and their legacy.
Heinrich Jacob from Mackenbach was one of the musicians to seek his fortune in the USA. He was rather successful under his artist name “Bill Henry” and his band called “Headliners.” One of his early band members, legendary Frank Sinatra, later became a world star. The Wandermusikanten Museum in Weilerbach has a diverse display of the life and times of the musicians and showcases Sinatra’s original trombone in its selection of artefacts.
The Kaiserslautern Military Community Medical Center is due to replace the existing facilities at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center built in 1953. Construction has been delayed but is expected to be completed by late 2027. The planned facility will include 120 patient rooms and a polyclinic, an administration tract, energy facilities and an entrance control point. A small section of the complex is located within the boundaries of neighboring RamsteinMiesenbach.
In 1911 two Erzenhausen residents discovered an abandoned stud when fetching water, now known as the Tropfsteinhöhle Erzenhausen (stalactite cave). The discovery was a sensation with a surprise being 20 centimeter long and 1- to 1.5-centimeter-thick stalactites that had formed over 200 years. When light shines onto them, this creates a spooky atmosphere and a flashlight and sturdy, waterproof shoes are necessary for a visit.
Findings indicate that there was a Celtic settlement near Weilerbach dating back to the late Hallstatt Era, about 620 – 450 B.C. During excavation work in 1875 a wagon grave was discovered along with a sheet metal ring, neck and arm rings out of bronze and wheel boxes and fittings. As the only cultural site of its kind in the Pfalz region, the Weilerbacher Wagengrab is a significant joint European Cultural Heritage site.
In the year 1874 another Celtic grave mound was discovered and based on the valuable grave goods, it is assumed that a prestigious man was buried there. The grave, dated back to about 400 B.C., now known as the “Fürstengrab von Rodenbach,” is considered to be the most significant finding north of the Alps during the La Tene Era, with its valuable golden arm bracelet and a ring. The “Rodenbacher Heidegericht” is an old place of jurisdiction found with 13 stone chairs. Twelve of them are in a circle and the somewhat larger one in the center, with its origin assumed in the Celtic period in Rodenbach.
Bikers, hikers and a cool refreshment
Numerous biking paths lead to Weilerbach and the vicinity. The Barbarossaweg from Worms

Hikers can enjoy the Pfälzer Musikanten Weg, a certified German hiking route, or Skulpturen Wanderweg Rodenbach, which is a route with 21 sculptures focused on Celts and water. It is also a partial section of the famous pilgrimage route Jakobsweg (Way of St. James) from Worms to Metz with the Jakob’s shell as directional symbol. https://www.weilerbach. de/tourismus/wandern/
If you have a green thumb and are interested in local fruit trees, you may also want to walk the Obstbaumlehrpfad Untere Pfeifermühle, an educational route that leads along orchards. Fruit trees have been an integral part of the landscape for centuries and served as a substantial means of nourishment.
Aqua lovers might enjoy a cool refreshment at the Waldfreibad Rodenbach located along the forest. The solar heated pool is equipped with a sports pool, diving boards, a “water experience area” with bubblers and a water mushroom and separate splash pool for small children.
The Entenweiher (duck pond) is a great place for a relaxed afternoon. It offers three playgrounds, a ropeway, benches and tables for a picnic, a water and sand pump with mill for children as well as a soccer field and basketball nets. A new “Bürgergarten” (garden for residents) is soon to be opened.
Three museums invite you to step into the history of the area. The Reinhard-Blauth-Museum gives insight to history starting with prehistoric farming in the Neolithic period, to grave goods from the Celtic era up to daily life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Wandermusikanten Museum showcases the life and times of the musicians, while the Beerenwei(n) museum displays artefacts focusing on the tradition of making wine out of a special type of pear only found in this area.
A farmer’s market takes place in June and the annual Weindorf (wine village) in August. The largest town festival “Kerwe” and a culinary wine hiking tour occur in September. The magical Weihnachtsdorf (Christmas village) highlights the holiday season at “Alter Bahnhof.”
The village Einsiedlerhof once belonged to the Weilerbach community. In a communal reform in 1932 it was added to the City of Kaiserslautern.
The union community has reached a milestone in becoming a “100 percent Zero Emission Village.” Residents are inspired to install state-of-the-art energy saving equipment, such as solar panels and the use of wind energy, and saving up to 50 percent electricity.
The highest wedding room in the Pfalz region is located in the Eulenkopfturm (tower) outside of Eulenbis. Imagine giving vows with a spectacular view over the Pfälzerwald, Sickingerhöhe, Potzberg and Donnersberg!

cyclable cities, Münster has an incredible history, a beautiful old town, tons of green space, a rocking urban lake, and a nonstop array of yearround cool activities and destinations.
5 must-dos in Münster
A city of just over 300,000 people in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (just north of Rheinland-Pfalz), Münster rarely gets a lot of love when it comes to must-see destinations in Germany. Maybe it’s the name. After all, Münster does sound an awful like ‘monster,’ even in German.
But there’s nothing monstrous about Münster. This is a city that’s been a center of commerce and culture for more than a millennium. It was once named the world’s most liveable city, thanks to its laid-back vibe, economic vitality, and plentiful green space. It has more than enough fun for several long weekends, so it’s definitely worth
your attention. Without further ado, then, here are five must-dos in Münster.
1. See the ‘Peace of Westphalia’ Hall
Europe, of course, has seen its share of terrible wars. Before the modern era, one of the worst was the Thirty Years’ War, which raged across Europe during the first half of the 17th century. This war was so unbelievably destructive that some parts of Germany lost half their population.
When peace was finally achieved, it happened in Münster, over the course of several years. The peace in Münster did more than just end the war: It put in place a structural approach to keeping the peace in Europe that lasted for more than 200 years, until the even more destructive 20th century.
A trip to the Peace Hall, located inside Münster’s amazing old town hall, is well worth any visitor’s time — if only to remind you of the horrors of war, the importance of peace, and the importance of paying attention.
2. Chill out at Lake Aa Münster has what just may be the best named lake of all time. Say it with me now: Lake Aa. Can’t you just feel your cares floating away?
To be fair, the German “Aasee” also sounds pretty entertaining. And both names don’t really convey the more accurate idea that Aasee is actually Münster’s gorgeous (It was voted most beautiful in Europe in 2009) central park.
But let’s not get caught up on names. This is a definite must-do, even if the weather happens to be less than great (which does occur sometimes…one of Lake Aa’s best attractions is the Münster Zoo, which is literally called the ‘Allweather zoo’). There’s so much to do here. You can walk, run, bike, picnic, take naps in the grass, sail, people watch, eat, or drink. Or you can just chill out!
3. Visit the Münster Wochenmarkt
As a general rule, German markets are awesome. There’s something kind of incredible about having all those fairly
priced meats, cheeses, vegetables, honeys, and flowers in one beautiful space.
Münster’s weekly market is next level. We’re talking more than 150 (often very friendly) vendors in the plaza right outside the city’s famous St. Paulus Dom (also known as the Münster cathedral, which is iconic and worth a visit). The market is held every Wednesday and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Also good to know: Unlike many places in Germany, dogs are not allowed at the Wochenmarkt.
4. Walk Münster’s Old Town
For more than 400 years in the Middle Ages, Münster was part of the Hanseatic League which, in its prime, was a network of roughly 200 cities connected by commerce and trade. The impact of Münster’s affiliation can still be seen — and felt — today, especially in the Old Town. Cobblestone streets, gabled buildings, and still plenty of shops.
The Prinzipalmarkt is a mustsee, and is honestly one of the most beautiful town centers in
Germany. You can wander, shop, eat and drink there. You are also super close to some of the city’s best sights, including the Rathaus (city hall, which offers stunning views of the city from its top floor), Peace Hall, the Dom, and more.
5. Visit the Botanical Garden
Münster’s botanical garden is part of the University of Münster, more than 200 years old, and is fantastic. It offers thousands of plant species, six large greenhouses open to the public, cool tropical plants, gorgeous flowers, and much more.
Located at the edge of the city center, visitors can easily spend a couple of hours there. Even better, the garden is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and admission is free.
Getting to Münster By car, Münster is about 4 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3 hours from Wiesbaden, and 5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
