On Saturday, Sep. 21, Munich mayor Dieter Reiter will tap the first beer barrel to declare Okotberfest or “Wiesn” — as Munich’s citizens call it — officially open. This year, the world-famous festival runs through October 6. It is the most famous event in Germany and the world’s largest fair, with some six million people attending every year. Here’s what you need to know before you go to Oktoberfest!

The 2024 Living Pattern Survey is now open through Sep. 30! The survey is open once every three years to determine where service members shop and how they allocate their purchases between local markets, U.S. Government, and online shopping facilities. The survey can also lead to increases or reductions of OCOLA rates year-to-year.

COMMENTARY: Grover: My guardian through shadows

Story

photo

Red and blue lights surround my house. Tears are streaming down my biological mother’s face. Her boyfriend is yelling at the men with shiny badges and guns on their hips. I am sitting on the couch quietly.

At age five, my life was about to change dramatically in West Virginia.

My mother, Dawn, was young when she found out she was pregnant with me — just 18 years old. We lived in a Section 8 housing unit. It was a two-bedroom, one-bath house that had very little furnishings. It smelled like booze and cigarettes.

My room was barely a bedroom. Ratty towels as blankets and a dingy, yellow-stained pillow without a pillowcase were against the wall to resemble my bed, and dirty clothes were always crumbled in a pile in the corner. I had no toys, but I did have a clear storage box full of broken Crayola crayons and two coloring books — Clifford the Big Red Dog and a Disney princess.

When I was finally old enough to begin pre-kindergarten at age four, teachers quickly began noticing the signs of various abuses I had been suffering through the years. Teachers saw bruises on my arms and legs, my unkempt hair, filthy clothes, shoes that were two sizes too big, and clothes that fell off my skinny body. It was only a few short months before the authorities were contacted about what was happening in my home.

The night I saw those blue and red lights pour into the living room, a police officer knelt beside me and gave me a sad smile that showed he felt sorry for me. I don’t remember if he talked to me, but he handed me a stuffed animal — something I have kept on my bed for nearly 30 years.

Once a vibrant and fluffy companion, Grover has weathered the passage of three decades showing the signs of a life well-loved. Its fur, once a brilliant blue, has now softened to a more muted hue, bearing the marks and stains of countless tears, snotty noses, and enthusiastic embraces. Its shifting and settled stuffing give it a charmingly misshapen appearance, fitting

perfectly in hand during nightly slumbers. Grover’s scent combines childhood memories and time, instantly transporting one back to simpler days.

Between ages five and eight, I quickly and efficiently learned to pack my things in black trash bags with red handles, shoving my few clothes, a hairbrush, and a toothbrush in them. I moved from one foster home to another, each lasting a few days or months. This happened fifteen times until I was eight and finally “picked” by my adoptive parents, John and Charlotte. Grover was with me at every home on the way, tucked under my arm, never in a trash bag.

“You don’t have to worry anymore,” John said softly while Charlotte was smiling, standing beside him. For some reason, I did not trust those words.

I faced problems at the beginning of this new chapter of my life. I acted out a lot. I lied about stupid things and stole things I didn’t have to. Despite the crumbs on my shirt and the chocolate on my face, I would steal Little Debbie’s snack cakes and lie about it being me. John and Charlotte took corporal and emotional punishment to the next level. Grover was always there after the trashing I would get from Charlotte.

There were so many kids in and out of our home, as John and Charlotte were also foster parents when I was growing up. I remember screaming, “Who stole my Grover? Who stole him? Who did it?” when I couldn’t find Grover sitting atop my military-style made-up bed. One of the

younger foster kids decided they wanted it, and Charlotte agreed with this grimy-handed, knotted-haired, snotty nose of a kid.

“You are too old to hold a stupid stuffed animal,” she sneered.

I cried to sleep that night and didn’t even get out of bed until the sun was scorching in my room. When I finally pulled myself together to walk down the hall and force myself to participate in “family time,” I opened my bedroom door and saw Grover sitting there with a written note attached to his hand. It read, “You are never too old to have a stuffed animal. Keep me safe under your pillow from now on.”

I could only assume John wrote it, as the letters were all in small, shaky capital letters, written on yellow-lined notebook paper. I never asked him, though.

When I was eleven, John and Charlotte adopted two more children, Jennifer and Zackary, who would become my new sister and brother. Jennifer was only two years younger than me, 9, and Zack was barely one. Shortly after the adoption, we moved from Roane Country to Wood County to live closer to John’s work.

We were so excited! We would have neighbors, a park down the road we could walk to, and a swimming pool to which we could get a season pass. Neither Jennifer nor I had ever been swimming before.

Our lives would severely change the week we moved into our new home.

John and Charlotte said Jennifer

and I could go to the pool on the weekend if we cleaned out the garage and basement with all the boxes from our move. We squealed with delight and decided right then and there to begin cleaning up.

“John!!” I yelled from the basement. “I accidentally tipped the weed eater that had gasoline in it on the floor. It’s all over the floor.”

John didn’t even get up from the chair and said the gasoline would evaporate, and it was okay. Excitedly, I ran upstairs with the weed eater and passed Jennifer on the stairs, heading back to grab more items. We were almost done; just a few more items left to clean the basement.

Little did he realize there was no airflow, and the gas did not evaporate. The gas leaked under the heat generator and blew it up — BANG! Black smoke filled the basement within seconds, and a fire blazed in a small section by the stairs. It was pitch black. I heard coughing. I ran towards it, realizing Jennifer was stuck down there.

Three days later, she died from third-degree burns. John and Charlotte blamed me.

For years, John and Charlotte haven’t spoken directly to me. I was never allowed to be in the same room as them. I couldn’t eat dinner with them, watch TV at night before bed… no more good night kisses. I was shunned. Again, Grover was my best friend. I cried with him, I screamed at him, I threw him, yet he was the only comfort I had.

I was depressed and had little hope that things would ever get better. I put a good face on at school, which was my sanctuary. There, I could smile, laugh, and forget how I would feel when I stepped through the doors at the end of the day to go home.

“How about you get your own room?” Charlotte asked. I stood there in shock. Was she looking directly at me, talking to me?

“Sure,” I stuttered.

My new room would be in the unfinished basement where the accident occurred.

Every night, I would grab Grover with both hands; his soft, fuzzy fur was a familiar comfort against my skin. Drawing him close, I would bury my

face into his plush blue body, the fabric yielding to my touch. His scent would wash over me as I inhaled deeply –an intoxicating blend of detergent, a hint of worn-out cotton, and a faint sadness.

In my senior year of high school, John came storming into the house from a doctor’s appointment with Charlotte. “YOU…you made your mother have a nervous breakdown, and now she has brain cancer,” as he backhands me in the face. The whole left side of my body was numb, the same feeling when my feet started falling asleep.

I was shut in my room (with Grover) for the remainder of my senior year.

Three weeks after graduating high school, I boarded a plane for Air Force Basic Military Training in San Antonio, Texas. My blue-colored pal was taped up in a box awaiting my completion of training.

I had lonely nights not having Grover gripped in my hand while sleeping. My hand would pat the cold, empty side of the bed, trying to find him, but after six months of training, Grover was finally reunited with me at my first duty station in Louisiana.

While living in Louisiana, Charlotte died on Memorial Day in 2007, and only a year and a half later, John followed. It is hard to describe how I felt – mad, angry, frustrated, relieved, happy…a weight was lifted off my shoulders, yet Grover was there for me then, too.

Grover has traveled alongside me on every work trip, deployment, and vacation. Even my teenage children know how special my ratty, scrawnylooking bedtime companion is. My daughter, 16, has her Ben, a large, yellow TY Beanie Baby bear she has had since she was an infant. It was her cousin’s and given to her when she was born. My son, 14, has a soft monkey he calls Boop, named after the sound when I would “boop” him on the nose with his monkey to make him laugh. We all have something we know will always be there for us. These worn and well-loved plushies are not just toys but a symbol of comfort and security in life's uncertainties. Grover, Ben, and Boop will always be a comfort.

Thracian Summer 24: Another great year

U.S. Airmen with the 86th Airlift Wing and 435th Air Ground Operations Wing from Ramstein Air Base, and U.S. Soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group from Stuttgart, participated in exercise Thracian Summer 24 at Plovdiv Airport, Bulgaria, Aug. 19 - 29.

The exercise was designed to strengthen the capabilities of U.S. Airmen and Bulgarian armed forces through interoperability, joint readiness, and partnership.

“The Thracian exercise series is an annual to bi-annual exercise the 86th Airlift Wing has been executing with our Bulgarian partners for more than a decade,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Zachary Palisch, Thracian Summer 2024 mission commander. “No matter the time of year, our ever-growing relationship with the Bulgarian military has been a true constant, built to stand the test of time.”

U.S. Air Forces in Europe has held training events like this in Bulgaria in the past. The training is conducted in coordination with the government of Bulgaria and is intended to bolster interoperability between the nations and build upon a shared commitment to regional security.

Learning was a constant throughout the exercise. Members, such as U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Zatavious Warren, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, viewed the exercise as an opportunity to learn and grow by working with different groups and people.

“We’re working with different agencies within the Air Force and the Army, as well as our host nation,” said Warren. “We coordinated everything really well, and we worked as a great team!”

This year’s exercise held an open media day event for local

and international outlets to view a joint aerial demonstration and conduct interviews with U.S. Air Force Maj. Sean Andrews, Thracian Summer 24 detachment commander, and Bulgarian Minister of Defence Atanas Zapryanov. The media event allowed both U.S. Air Force and Bulgarian military leadership to discuss joint capabilities through operational and tactical discussions.

“As we prepare for future endeavors, our continued training with all NATO partners has never been more important,” said Palisch. “Strengthening our partnerships with the Bulgarian air force ensures a key component for the team that will help preserve a peaceful future and keep our shared adversaries at bay.”

Maintaining a close relationship with NATO allies and partners facilitates the opportunity to share knowledge and tactics to build up a stable coalition force.

“Since its infancy, the number one objective of this exercise has been to continue to grow and strengthen our relationship with our Bulgarian partners,” said Palisch. “Low-level flying, tactical data-link training, oversized cargo loading, bi-lateral personnel drops, and dissimilar formation flying with the C-27J make up just some of the objectives accomplished during this exercise.”

During their training with the Bulgarian armed forces, U.S. Airmen were able to conduct unconventional and specialized events.

“Bulgaria offers training we simply cannot get anywhere else,” said Palisch. “They have mountainous terrain and airspace that allow our pilots to fly at night and in a new challenging environment that we simply cannot get in Germany. Exercises like this, where we are away from home station with limited supplies and personnel, force our members to adapt and train like they would

in a real, contested environment should that call ever come.”

The partnership between the U.S. and Bulgaria has strengthened over the years through exercises like Thracian Summer and members from both nations are appreciative for the training and friendships they have made.

“Our job is to identify the differences between our flying communities and develop procedures to overcome them,” said Palisch.“In the future, I would love to see the exercise continue to grow with more people, objectives, planes, and resources. The only way to continue to grow our NATO relationships is by committing ourselves to ensuring exercises like Thracian Summer happen each year.”

From Air Force to IMCOM: A legal legacy, a life of service

tours as a Staff Judge Advocate.

For more than two decades, Stephen Blewett has been a cornerstone of legal support for the Installation Management Command Europe, providing steadfast guidance and contributing significantly to the organization’s mission. As IMCOM-Europe’s first full-time legal advisor, Blewett has seen the organization evolve from its early days as the Installation Management Agency to its now current state as IMCOM, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a dedication to service.

Blewett’s journey to IMCOMEurope began long before he joined the organization in 2004. His career started in the United States Air Force, where he served for nearly 21 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

A native of New Hampshire, Blewett earned his Juris Doctor from Franklin Pierce Law Center, now the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

After practicing law privately for a couple of years, he was drawn to military service, inspired by a family friend who extolled the opportunities the military could offer.

Blewett joined the Air Force in the early 1980s as a reserve officer before transitioning to active duty. Over the years, he held various legal positions, including three

His assignments took him across the globe — from New Hampshire to England, North Dakota, Egypt, Spain, and Spangdahlem.

Each role added to his growing expertise, particularly in environmental law, a field in which he eventually earned a Master of Laws from George Washington University.

In 2004, Blewett transitioned to a new chapter in his career, joining what was then IMA-Europe. He quickly established himself as a vital part of the organization, becoming the organization’s first full-time legal advisor.

Initially, his role involved working closely with the United States Army Europe Office of the Judge Advocate, but as IMCOM grew, so did his responsibilities.

Over time, Blewett’s focus shifted entirely to serving the needs of IMCOM-Europe, where he provided legal counsel to the director and staff on a wide range of issues, including ethics, environmental law, and real estate agreements with German authorities.

“The people are the best part of the job,” said Blewett, reflecting on his time with IMCOM. “I’ve had the privilege of working with talented and dedicated individuals who make the job both enjoyable and fulfilling.”

His role at IMCOM also allowed him and his family to fulfill a per-

sonal goal — living in Europe. Having previously been stationed in Germany during his Air Force career, Blewett and his wife were eager to return, and the opportunity with IMCOM provided the perfect avenue to do so.

Throughout his tenure, Blewett has seen IMCOM-Europe navigate significant challenges, from the realignment of U.S. forces in Europe to the complexities of managing relationships with host nations.

His legal expertise has been crucial in ensuring that IMCOMEurope operates smoothly within the legal frameworks of both the U.S. and the host nation.

Looking back on his career, Blewett takes pride in IMCOM’s role in supporting soldiers and their families. “IMCOM is dedicated to protecting soldiers and their families, and they truly walk the walk when it comes to their mission,” said Blewett.

As he prepares to transition to a new role at IMCOM Headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, Blewett reflects on the importance of enjoying one’s work.

“Make sure you leave room to have fun at work. The camaraderie you build with your colleagues is unique and invaluable,” said Blewett as he advises current and future Army civilian professionals

to focus on building relationships with those around them.

After completing his assignment in San Antonio, Blewett plans to retire and, perhaps, take advantage of military space-available flights to travel the world — a fitting reward for a career spent in service to his country and its military community.

Before leaving IMCOM-E, Blewett was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal for exceptional service as the legal advisor for IMCOM-E.

Blewett’s contributions to IMCOM-Europe have left a lasting impact that will continue long after he has moved on to his next adventure.

US Air Force F-35 Lightning II makes historic first on highway in Finland

by U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

Two U.S. Air Force F-35 Lightning II aircraft assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing, Royal Air Force Lakenheath, U.K., executed a historic, austere landing on a pre-designated highway in Finland Wednesday during exercise BAANA 2024.

The austere landing demonstrates advancements in the NATO Alliance’s ability to perform operations under the U.S. Air Force’s agile combat employment concept and promotes closer integration among Allied forces.

“The successful first-ever landing of our fifth generation F-35 on a highway in Europe is a testament to the growing relationship and close interoperability we have with our Finnish Allies,” said Gen. James Hecker, commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa.

“The opportunity to learn from our Finnish counterparts improves our ability to rapidly deploy and employ air power from unconventional locations and reflects the collective readiness and the agility of our forces.”

Since Finland’s accession to NATO in 2023, it has provided U.S. Airmen significant opportunities to learn from Finnish counterparts. Among the most recent activities, the Finnish Air Force was among a total of nine national air forces to participate in the 1v1 air superiority exercise held in June at Ramstein. During that event, fighter aircraft and pilots from the nine nations participated in a series of aerial combat simulations.

Loadmaster in heat of Thracian Summer 24

The sun sits low in the evening sky, bathing the flightline in a warm, golden glow. Down the tarmac, looming giants sit tall, their gray skin in stark contrast with the impending sunset. These are C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. Their mission is to drop cargo, paratroopers and to fly with Bulgarian allies.

Next to these colossal aircraft, a figure can be seen. He is an instrumental part of the mission taking place here. He is a loadmaster from the 37th Airlift Squadron. He is U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Zatavious Warren, and his job is not an easy one.

As a loadmaster, he’s responsible for many aspects of the aircraft. Supervising uploads and downloads of cargo, vehicles and people, mathematically preplanning the placement of cargo, managing passenger safety and comfort, secur-

ing cargo and taking part in airdrop operations being chief among them.

“One of my parts in this exercise was coordinating between our forces and our Bulgarian allies, and also helping to coordinate our airdrops,” said Warren. “A loadmaster is important. We handle the weight and balance, fuel, cargo, passengers, the airdrops, cockpit display system, and others.”

Thracian Summer 24 put his, and many others’ skills to the test. Cargo drops, paradrops, low altitude flying, cargo uploads and downloads, and sorties were frequent occurrences. The Thracian exercise series is an annual to biannual exercise the 86th Airlift Wing has been executing with Bulgarian allies for over a decade. This year was no different, with Bulgarian and United States forces working side-by-side to accomplish the common goal of creating a more secure Europe.

The exercise was a great learn -

ing opportunity for Warren. It afforded him a chance to put his skills to the test in a joint environment away from his home station.

“I learned a lot about foreign relations,” said Warren. “We’re working with different agencies within the Air Force and the Army, as well as our host nation. We coordinated everything really well, and we worked as a great team!”

As the exercise came to a close, Airman 1st Class Warren loaded up the cargo and passengers on his C-130 back to Ramstein. Finally at cruising altitude, he strung up his hammock and took a moment to relax. This exercise may have ended, but partnerships continue — not only in Bulgaria, but across the entire European area of responsibility.

Face of Defense: Army Officer earns rare Triple-Tab Triumph

Army 1st Lt. Mackenzie Corcoran, inspired by fellow U.S. Army Ranger School graduates, became one of few women to earn the coveted Ranger, Sapper and Jungle tabs.

Corcoran followed the progress of three women graduating from Ranger School: Army 1st Lt. Erin O’Hara, a college classmate; Army Capt. Sara Febbo; and Army 1st Lt. Rachael Kicklighter, the first female honor graduate. Although she was not present at the ceremonies and wasn’t in the same units as these graduates, hearing about their achievements continually boosted her confidence.

“If they can do it, I can do it,” said Corcoran assigned to the 29th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where she has been triple-tabbed with the Ranger, Sapper and Jungle.

This realization helped her finally break through the barrier of self-doubt that had stood between her and Ranger School. To bolster her confidence further, she sought encouragement from five Rangertabbed soldiers who had motivated and supported her throughout her journey.

As she stood in the Brigade Hall of Heroes, the brigade command team — who were also the Rangers who had motivated her — each took turns shaving her head.

“Having people that truly believe in you,” said Corcoran, “is the biggest step towards Ranger.”

From chemistry lab to jungle warfare

Corcoran joined the Army in May 2021 after graduating from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Shortly after graduating from the Basic Officer Leader Course in June 2021, she was assigned to the 29th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th ID at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Corcoran said she always knew she wanted to attend the Jungle Operations Training Course, or JOTC, a 12-day course that teaches students how to navigate and operate in jungle environments using various tactics, techniques and procedures.

One week after arriving at her unit in January 2022, she was given the opportunity to attend JOTC at Lightning Academy. She graduated and earned her first tab, an arch worn on Army uniforms that signifies a special skill.

on her chest — each a testament to her growing list of achievements.

In the near future, Corcoran plans to attend the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program 2, a three-week course that evaluates and selects the best Rangers to be assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment. After promoting to captain and graduating from the Captains Career Course, she hopes to be assigned to Fort Liberty, North Carolina, to be closer to family and participate in more airborne operations.

“As long as I am serving the Army and the Army is serving me, I see no reason to get out,” Corcoran said.

As she progresses in her career, Corcoran says she would like to attend Air Assault School and Pathfinder School, and she would like to achieve and earn her Expert Soldier Badge.

“I want to continue challenging myself by attending as many Army courses as possible,” she said.

Completing JOTC was the first of many accomplishments for Corcoran. She said she believes it is a great starting point for anyone wanting to challenge themselves in an Army course that requires skills such as teamwork, navigation, communication, and that it effectively builds self-confidence as it did for her.

“It taught me that I can accomplish an Army school and inspired me to really pursue Sapper,” Corcoran said.

Sapper: Pushing beyond the limit

With the help of her command team she managed to find time in her schedule from November to December 2022 to attend the Sapper Leader Course without impacting her platoon leader responsibilities. The Sapper Leader Course is a challenging 28-day course for combat engineers focused on developing leadership while reinforcing essential skills and teaching advanced techniques.

Corcoran had never undergone the physical challenges she encountered during the Sapper Leader Course. She was uncertain how limited rations and sleep would affect her body, mind and leadership methods.

No one realizes how far our bodies and minds can actually go until we push them to the limit,” Corcoran said.

Every day, the students were given an hour for eating and sleep-

ing, known as “Sapper time.” On one particularly hard day, the famished and exhausted students were running laps in the pouring rain, cutting their usual one hour down to 20 minutes.

Once the students were allotted their Sapper time, Corcoran huddled under her poncho, wet and tired.

“It was miserable, we were all miserable,” Corcoran said, choosing to eat her field rations over taking the time for sleep.

A close friend soon joined her, confiding that he was having thoughts of quitting.

Corcoran objected, “We are three days away from finishing; we’re not quitting.”

A Ranger’s challenge

Corcoran faced many challenges throughout her journey collecting each tab, the biggest of which was her lack of confidence in herself.

“Everyone is afraid of failure, but I knew I would hate myself if I didn’t try,” she said.

Corcoran earned her promotion to first lieutenant in January 2023. She achieved another milestone in her quest for a challenge by completing Ranger School. Ranger School helps prepare both enlisted soldiers and officers to lead while facing the challenges of combat and is named one of the most challenging and demanding military training programs.

Corcoran said, “Ranger was physically easier than Sapper, but with so much time to my thoughts, it made it more mentally challenging.”

Ranger School consists of three phases: Benning, Mountain and Florida. Soldiers have two attempts to pass each phase; if they fail, they must start that phase over. Corcoran experienced that firsthand, having had to recycle the Benning Phase once.

Corcoran was the 135th woman to graduate and earn her Ranger tab, making her the eighth woman to be double-tabbed with Ranger and Sapper.

Aiming high

Corcoran is proud to wear the Ranger, Sapper and Jungle tabs on her shoulder along with the airborne badge prominently displayed

Wearing each of her hardearned and well-deserved tabs brings Corcoran confidence in herself. She hopes to inspire that same confidence in soldiers across the Army by encouraging all soldiers who want to attend an Army course to pursue it.

“You are going to be your biggest advocate,” she said. “The best time to go is yesterday.”

Ask the Doc: What are ways to protect my mental health?

Dear Doc,

I’m feeling pretty low and very stressed out. A good friend recently died by suicide, and no one saw it coming. I’ve been thinking about him a lot. On top of that, I feel guilty for uprooting my young family when we recently PCSed across the country. Also, I’m anxious about how I’m fitting in at my new assignment, and the world news both weighs me down and makes me angry. It’s like I’m stuck in a deep, dark hole. How can I feel better?

Feeling hopeless, U.S. Air Force Airman I.M. Blue

Airman Blue,

It sounds like you are overwhelmed and recognize the negative impact on your mental health. These turbulent days affect each of us differently. Moving your family is a huge life stressor by itself, not to mention all the other changes. How we respond to major changes and uncertainty about the future is important.

I’ve found an expert who describes several coping strategies that you may find helpful. These strategies can boost your readiness to take on a new assignment, and help you rebound from your dark moods and hopelessness. U.S. Public Health Service Capt. Meghan Corso holds a doctorate in psychology and is chief of behavioral health clinical operations at the Defense Health Agency. Here’s what she suggested.

First, it’s important to keep telling yourself you’re not alone, and things won’t always be this bad. Whatever you’re going through, it’s important to remember you will get to the other side. Be patient.

Change takes time.

However, if you feel you’re about to reach a crisis point, call 988 for the Military and Veteran Crisis Line and press “1,” or text 838255, or chat with a live counselor. (Para Español, apretar “2.”)

Second, suicide’s impact ripples, touching many people. Postvention strategies may help get you in touch with your feelings about your friend as well as the pain you are going through. Another helpful resource is the nonprofit Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. Its “10 Things We Know to be True: Surviving Suicide Loss” offers good perspective.

As for tips on defending your mental health, I have collected a number of techniques and practices. These can be grouped into three buckets I call “Protect, Seek, and Optimize.”

Protect Practice just a few of these habits a day to build and maintain a strong psychological foundation and help protect against stress and negative, depressing thoughts.

• Exercise not only improves your physical health, but it also is a good way to get “feel good” hormones such as serotonin flooding your brain. This may help reduce the cumulative impacts of stress to your brain and body.

• Balanced nutrition from your diet directly affects the growth and repair of brain cells and fuels your ability to cope with physical and emotional stressors.

• Quality sleep is healing and restorative. It enhances your cognitive and physical health and your ability to manage stress. Here are some tips for better quality sleep.

• Relaxation and meditation practices such as yoga and controlled breathing on a daily basis help promote a state of relaxation, enhance your sense of wellbeing, and can enhance physical and mental health for stress management.

• Setting goals helps to reduce stress hormones such as cortisol and increases a sense of control and accomplishment.

• Break your big goal down into chunks so they are realistic and obtainable. Start small. Success at the beginning can fuel further success. A small goal could be something such as, “I’m going to connect with my family by having family meals once a week.”

• Positive perspective provides hope and helps us to keep moving forward. Try to reframe one

or two things from your day with a positive approach. You can also make a choice to be positive for the day. It may not actually happen all the time but keep making this choice; it may become habit.

• Social connections help to reduce stress, increase your sense of well-being and positive experiences. Reach out to a friend, catch up with former colleagues, or join a sports league.

Seek help early

Mental health resources can be used to manage and improve everyday life, and they don’t always involve a therapist or treatments. Seeking care early can help address mental health challenges before they worsen and prevent a crisis. These resources include:

• Chaplains, peer-to-peer counseling, substance misuse programs, and many other non-clinical and clinical programs are available across the Military Health System. The Mental Health Hub on health.mil has a complete list of resources for immediate assistance or to make appointments.

• Military OneSource is a 24/7 gateway to trusted information for service members and their families that provides resources and confidential help. Call 800342-9667. Military OneSource also has a searchable database of local morale, welfare, and recreation resources.

• The Real Warriors Campaign is a public health effort to decrease stigma attached to mental health, increase psychological health literacy, and open doors to get care for service members, veterans, and their families. The

campaign was expanded in 2023 with a collaboration between the DHA’s Psychological Health Center of Excellence and the Department of Defense Suicide Prevention Office. The campaign also provides free mental health resources including online articles, print materials, and videos.

Optimize

• Practice mindfulness daily. By trying to stay in the moment, you may improve your ability to pay attention and concentrate and help reduce the accumulation of stress hormones in your body.

• Keep a journal. By expressing your thoughts and creativity (think doodling) on paper or a computer may help you organize and process potential negative experiences and create mental distance from harmful or intrusive thoughts and actions.

• Set aside a time each day to journal about what you are feeling and hope to achieve. Writing it all down and then physically putting the day’s entry aside can help you to push the negative thoughts away.

• Be aware of your thoughts and practice alternatives to negative thinking, which includes repetitive thinking about things you have no control over, jumping to conclusions, and discounting positive experiences.

• Practice gratitude and identify the positive aspects to be found in a negative situation, such as it being the opportunity to learn more about yourself, learn something new, or help someone else.

• Find daily meaning and value in yourself and what you do. Identify high-value and long-term goals

and hopes you can strive toward, which gives you a sense of the larger world. This process alone may enhance your cognitive performance, overall happiness, and improve your physical health.

• Engage in activities or hobbies that are positive. These can reward you daily and keep you engaged in your environment in a way that potentially changes how you feel. Naturally rewarding activities such as giving back to the community, being physically active, or connecting with others can help to combat stress and improve your mood.

Airman Blue, I hope Capt. Corso’s suggestions resonate with you, and help you feel better about yourself. Please don’t give up. If you reach out and don’t feel you are being heard, keep trying through all the channels and ranks or have a trusted advocate help. If these different strategies are not working, and you are still feeling stressed, please call your military hospital or clinic. They can assist you in connecting to care or services. You are surrounded by people who care about you. Even though it can be a struggle, remember, mental health is health. As always, stay safe out there.

Editor’s note: This article deals with mental health issues and resources that may help. If you or someone you know is having a mental health crisis, call 988 for the Military and Veteran Crisis Line and press “1”, or text 838255, or chat with a live counselor. Para Español, apretar “2”. Civilians can also call 988 to reach the National Suicide and Crisis Line.

ABC IN KMC: Oktoberfest

O’ ZAPFT IS!

When service members are notified of their selection for an overseas assignment, they may feel a sense of anticipation for various reasons, including the opportunity to travel and immerse themselves in a new culture.

This holds true for many service members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, who may have missed the chance to experience an authentic Oktoberfest. This year marks the 189th celebration of Oktoberfest in Munich.

While the annual festival enjoys worldwide recognition, it is possible that many are unfamiliar with its history and how it has evolved into the celebrated event we know today.

Oktoberfest originates from Munich with the marriage of Ludwig I, the future king of Bavaria, and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, Oct. 12, 1810 where celebrations lasted five days. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the royal wedding, participate in festivities, and watch horse races.

According to the city of Munich’s website the celebration was so popular it was brought back the following year and included an

agriculture fair. Many new additions were made in following years including horse races and food and drink vendors. These vendors eventually moved to beer halls in the 20th century.

Today, Oktoberfest celebrations throughout the world pay homage to the Oktoberfest in Munich. The festival is traditionally a 16 to 17-day celebration, ending on the first Sunday in October. Since 1950, the mayor of Munich has kickedoff the festival by tapping the keg. What might be a surprising fact for visitors is that the large tents are completely newly constructed with fresh timber every year and construction starts in July!

FUN FACTS:

• When the Oktoberfest hosts move to the fairgrounds on Saturday, a total of 40 horses pull the magnificently decorated brewery wagons onto Theresienwiese during the parade. These horses are usually huge cold-blooded horses that can pull the heavy wagons with ease.

• Only beer brewed in Munich may be served at the fest and they are Augustiner, HackerPschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner und Spaten. Locals call the fest “Wiesn,” which is derived from Theresienwiese, named after Princess Therese

who married there. Locals prefer to visit the fest from Mondays –Thursdays when it’s somewhat less crowded!

• Nobody raises their mug until the mayor says so! Since 1950, the festival has only started after the official gun salute and the mayor shouting O’ zapft is! (“It’s tapped!”) and offering the first mug to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. Only after that, the festival can start.

• The hairier the hat, the wealthier the wearer. During Oktoberfest, traditional visitors wear Bavarian hats (Tirolerhüte). The more tufts of goat hair on your hat, the wealthier you are considered to be.

• The beer is specially brewed for Oktoberfest and it’s extra strong. One mug of beer here is equivalent to 8 shots of Schnapps.

• There’s an on-site Red Cross tent. And it’s usually full! In 2023, at least 5,800 people needed medical attention.

• There are 14 large fest tents, the most famous one is Schottenhamel because it’s where the mayor taps the first keg. The biggest one is HofbräuFesthalle which seats almost 11,000 people.

• There is also a wine tent. Besides 15 different types of wine, there’s also champagne and sparkling

wine in the Weinzelt.

• Albert Einstein once worked there as an electrician and helped set up one of the beer tents in 1896.

• Beer mugs are popular souvenirs and guests love to take them home. But in 2023, 130,000 beer mugs were confiscated and taken back to their tent owners.

• Waiters at the fest are expected to carry ten Mass glasses (one liter each), in addition to the weight of the liquid, the glasses weigh about one kilo each, adding up to 20 kilos at once!

• Church and Oktoberfest? Sounds out of place. Well, a mass is held every first Thursday of the Oktoberfest in the Hippodrome tent.

• Kid friendly: The idea of bringing children to a massive beer festival might seem pretty far out, but the truth is that there are hundreds of children that attend the festival every year. There are ferris wheels, roller coasters, rides, carousels, games and traditional parades. And, believe it or not, there is a lost and found children office on the premises!

• Lost & Found collects around 5,000 items each year. Items include wheelchairs, baby carriages, passports, keys, crutches

and dogs! And a pair of teeth are found almost every year. Wedding rings also seem to get surprisingly loose during Oktoberfest.

• Americans are the most frequent foreign visitors, followed by Australians.

• In 2023, 7.2 million guests visited Oktoberfest, drinking 6.5 million liters (1.7 million gallons) of beer!

Oktoberfest will be held Sept. 21 to Oct. 6 this year. Members planning to attend Oktoberfest celebrations — locally or across the country — should ensure they have a plan for transportation if drinking alcohol. Local tour operators offer package tours and special trains are also available to Munich.

Members celebrating in the local area are encouraged to have a plan and use resources available like local cab companies, public transportation, a designated driver, and their immediate supervisor. Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving is available Fridays and Saturdays between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Members should call AADD at 0152-5172-3356 if their original plan falls through.

Parades a’plenty

A huge parade of Oktoberfest landlords and breweries is the official prelude to the opening of the Oktoberfest. It involves about 1,000 participants, including the landlords’ families in decorated carriages, the magnificent horse-drawn drays of the Munich breweries, waitresses on decorated floats and all the beer tent bands. Starting at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sep. 21, the parade runs from SonnenstrasseSchwanthalerstrasse to the Oktoberfest grounds.

The first Sunday of Oktoberfest, the Oktoberfest Costume and Rifleman’s Parade takes place, which includes over 9,000 performers.

A varied succession of regional costume groups, “troops” in historical uniforms, marching bands, riflemen, thoroughbred horses, oxen, cows, goats, the decorated drays of the Munich breweries, floats displaying typical local traditions and historic carriages all pass by in a 7-kilometer-long procession through the streets of the city center. Ribboned trees, harvest garlands, craftsmen’s tools from bygone days, harvest produce, dancers decorated with flowers, stars and crowns, trumpeters on horseback, flag-throwers and a host of other performers transform this traditional Munich procession into a brilliant highlight on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest.

Family attraction

Munich’s Oktoberfest is very much intended for families. There are dozens of fairground attractions such as shooting galleries, dodgem cars, merry-go-rounds, ferris wheels and high adrenaline rides. There is something for everyone, and brand new white-knuckle rides and attractions are added each year.

Plus, there are hundreds of stalls offering candy floss, gingerbread biscuits, sweets of all descriptions, tasty savory snacks and lots and lots of souvenirs.

From Monday through Friay (except holidays), from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.., the sign “Mittagswiesn” means discounts for attractions, admissions and prices.

Festival beer tents

Munich’s largest and most traditional breweries invite you to join the fun in one of a dozen or so huge festival beer tents – the most famous party tents in the world. Drink beer by the liter, or eat traditional Bavarian food such as giant pretzels with Obatzda (a Bavarian cream cheese delicacy).

Party to live music from brass bands playing traditional Bavarian schlager (party) music as well as current hits, and enjoy yourself with thousands of other people from all over the world, dancing and singing the hours away. It’s terrific fun.

You should expect to pay around €14-16 for a Mass (liter mug) of beer. And prepare to be very impressed by the servers who can carry up to five mugs in each hand!

Big Oktoberfest tents

• Augustiner

This is the only tent still serving the beer from large wooden barrels rather than from the steel ones used elsewhere. The tent seats as many as 8,500 people.

• Bräurosl (Pschorrbräu)

Not long ago Pschorr celebrated their 100th anniversary with a specially brewed beer. The tent seats 8,400 people.

• Hackerbräu

This is the only tent with a revolving stage in the middle. The tent seats 9,300.

• Hofbräu

As this is the tent tourists are most familiar with it is the one with the most international flair. Party till you drop is the order of the day here! You will even get served with a beer if you haven’t got a seat. The tent seats 9,350.

• Löwenbräu

This tent is the traditional meeting place for fans and players of 1860 Munich football club. The tent seats 8,500.

• Ochsenbraterei (Spatenbräu)

This is a must just to see the ox on a spit! Some 70 to 90 oxen are consumed during the 16 days of the fair. The tent seats 7,400.

• Winzerer Fähndl (Paulaner)

A tent with real Bavarian charm and the occasional celebrity. Players from FC Bayern Munich can sometimes be seen here. The tent seats 10,900.

Smaller Oktoberfest Tents

These slightly smaller tents are run exclusively by Munich-based publicans, all of whom are under licence to the larger breweries.

• Armbrustschützen (Paulaner)

This tent is all about hunting and visitors can sit in the themed boxes (pheasants or badgers) and admire the hunters’ trophies. The tent seats 7,430.

• Fischer-Vroni (Augustiner)

This is a small and cosy tent located right next to at the entrance which offers grilled fish as well as sander, whitefish and salmon trout. The tent seats 700.

• Festhalle Schottenhamel (Spatenbräu)

This is the oldest tent at the Oktoberfest dating way back to 1867. It is extremely popular with the younger visitors. The tent seats 10,000.

• Hippodrom (Spatenbräu)

Not long ago the Hippodrom had two reasons to celebrate: the 100th anniversary of the tent taking part in the Oktoberfest and the 50th anniversary of serving Spaten beer. The gallery is always full of celebrities from the worlds of film, sport and business. The tent seats 4,200.

• Käfer’s Wies’n-Schänke (Paulaner)

Meeting place for the rich and famous. Because of the extended licensing hours to 1 a.m. there is always a real crush to get in here after the other tents close at 11 p.m. The tent seats 2,900.

• Schützenfesthalle (Löwenbräu)

Old Bavarian specialities such as Boeff Lamotte or suckling pig are served here. The tent seats 5,442.

Note: During weekends, beer tents are often closed by noon due to overcrowding, so either reserve in advance, get in early or go during the week.

Oktoberfest food

Visitors also eat huge amounts of traditional hearty fare such as Hendl (chicken), Schweinsbraten (roast pork), Haxn (knuckle of pork), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl (sausages) along with Brezn (Pretzel), Knödeln (potato or bread dumplings), Kaasspotzn (cheese noodles), Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), Sauerkraut or Rotkraut (red cabbage) along with such Bavarian traditional food as Obatzda (spiced cream and butter) and Weisswurst (a white sausage).

It’s all delicious and perfect for soaking up beer and wine. Just don’t think about the calories.

Dare to Dress Up

Lederhosen (leather shorts) for men and Dirndl (traditional Bavarian dress with full skirt, apron and tight bodice) for women are practically compulsory. Well not really, but you will be the odd one out if you do not go in costume.
