ULTIMATE DIY GUIDE

ADVENT CALENDAR

Christmas may still be a month away but as Michael Bublé slowly defrosts across the pond, it’s time to start planning one of the best parts about Christmas: Advent Calendars. They’re the perfect opportunity to get creative and make someone very happy in the process. Whether you’re planning on making one for a friend, your partner or your children, here’s everything you need to design and fill the perfect, unique Advent Calendar to make the days leading up to Christmas fly by on any budget.

Anyone and everyone, no matter your level of craftiness, can do this. If you’re absolutely helpless when it comes to crafting, you can always buy the ‘frame’ and only worry about the filling.

History

Advent calendars first appeared around 1850. In its early years, people lit one more candle every day or hung pictures on their walls, some simply counted the days with chalk marks on their doors. Being the classic consumerist culture we are, this soon turned into 24 days of presents. Nowadays, you can find them at every toy and delicacy shop in Germany, some so expensive that you can only wonder what the actual Christmas presents will look like, others simple and all of them serve one purpose: To count the days leading up to Christmas eve.

Stuffing

Let’s start with the fun part: Stuffing! I have three siblings so my mother kept our ‘gifts’ small in order to fit them into little pots and usually went for little candy bars, mini santas on the 6th (Nikolaus) and 24th. We would always grab our surprises before going off to school and enjoy the extra sugar rush along with our lunches. For the sake of this article, I got it out a little sooner than usual but come Advent 1, my mother will add twigs of evergreens for those extra holiday vibes. (We might be all grown up now but whoever comes to visit gets to pick something and I hope that tradition never dies.)

If you see something throughout the year, just buy it and put it in a box so you don’t need to come up with 24 items in November. Here are some inexpensive (around €1–3) suggestions that will make anyone smile. You can never go wrong with useful things such as toiletries (just browse through the travel sized section of your local drugstore and you’ll be able to stuff every sock) and €1 stores hide great useless items that no one would ever buy for themselves.

• Nail polish

• Candy

• Chapsticks

• Mini toy cars

• Small books

• Gummi bears

• Christmas tree ornaments

• Stationery/pens/highlighters/pretty paperclips etc.

• Photos of you two and/ or a cherished memory

• Face masks (they make them for men as well!)

• Chocolate

• A puppy (that was a joke, please remember that pets are not suitable as gifts unless you are positive the recipient is responsible enough for the financial and emotional commitment)

• Socks

• Mini hand creams or hand sanitisers

Packaging

Once you’ve gained a general idea of your filling’s size, it’s time to think about containers. The options, again, are endless. I have put together a few things that can be bought in family-sized packages at a decent price (you don’t want to waste all your money on the ‘shell’) and hold items up to a certain size. Germans celebrate on the 24th so that’s all the numbers you get if you choose a store-bought frame but you can always add another surprise for the 25th. If you want to wrap every gift separately, you might not need to get anything like this.

• Envelopes. Yes, boring old envelopes from your office can be pimped with washi tape, glitter glue, crayons and about anything else that’s colorful and sticks to paper. However, depending on its size and the size of gifts you’re planning on buying, they can be too small.

• Baby socks. Aside from the fact that they’re adorable, they are quite flexible when it comes to their shape, so you don’t need to worry that sharp or larger objects will tear them.

• Sandwich bags. Another low-cost item you most likely already have at home. Pretty ribbons, stickers, more glitter glue and bows suffice for a glowup.

• Boxes. Boxes can be purchased in all shapes and sizes at any crafting store. I suggest buying the gifts first to make sure they all fit. This option can be a bit pricey.

• Flower pots. Unless they’re individually wrapped, the receiver will immediately be able to identify all her/his gifts on the first day but if you’re going for things like candy, this should not be an issue.

• Hand-sewn or store-bought satchels.

Frame

You may not need a frame at all. Depending on the size and material of your packages, you might want to wrap them separately and put them on a window sill or table.

If you do wish to hang it up or want it to be set up in a certain pattern, you can either go for a classic string and simply pin the gifts with clothespins or choose something a little more robust. You can also super glue or sew the packages on the string. This way you won’t have to worry about it anymore next year. Large, wooden picture frames and some sort of net make for a great basis.

Is your decidophobia stressing you yet? Just go for a different theme every day, vary the content, alternate between envelopes, flower pots, paper bags and cotton satchels. This is your artwork and only you make the rules.

Worried your perfectionism will ruin this one? Remember that whomever you’re making this for will love the gesture more than the gifts and any flaws will simply make it more unique.

You can make one for your dog or your cat or your parrot, your grandma, your accountant or yourself. There is no right or wrong way to go about this. Just get started and see where it leads you!

VISIT NUREMBERG CHRISTMAS MARKET

If you are looking for a little bit of charm, romance and holiday enchantment this time of year, then the “Christkindlesmarkt,” or Nuremberg Christmas Market, is the place to go. Around two million tourists travel to Nuremberg every Christmas season to indulge in the holiday festivities. It may seem like this is perhaps a major tourist overload, but think again.

The Christkindlesmarkt is actually three markets all smashed into one. There is a large market with rows of Christmas delights that takes place in the heart of the Old Town on the main market square. In this market you will find traditional Christmas smokers, or figures that “exhale” incense smoke, nutcrackers, Christmas-themed figurines and food vendors galore. There is nothing like indulging in a steaming cup of Gluehwein, or hot mulled wine, and traditional “Lebkuchen,” or gingerbread. Don’t forget to order “Drei im Weggla,” three delicious Nuremberg sausages in a roll.

The second market in Nuremberg is called the “Sister Cities” market at the Rathausplatz next to the Christkindlesmarkt. It is full of international booths with colorful themes and traditional goods. This market sells goods relating to cities all around the globe: Aného (Togo), Antalya (Türkiye), Atlanta (USA), Bar (Montenegro), Braov (Romania), Kharkiv (Ukraine), Córdoba (Spain), Corrèze, formerly Limousin (France), Gera (Thuringia, Germany), Glasgow (Scotland, GB), Hadera (Israel), Kalkudah (Sri Lanka,) Kavala (Greece), Klausen and Montan (South Tyrol, Italy), Krakow (Poland), Nice (France), Prague (Czech Republic), San Carlos (Nicaragua), Santiago de Cuba (Cuba), Shenzhen (China), Skopje (North Macedonia), Venice (Italy), Verona (Italy) — all sister cities of Nuremberg.

Last but not least, there is the “Kinderweihnacht,” or Children’s Christmas, with low windows and steps for the shorter people in our lives. And, of course, no Christmas market is complete without an ornately decorated carousel.

With such a wide selection of Christmas markets locally, one might ask them-

selves, why travel all the way to Nuremberg? One reason is because of the town’s rich history. The Christmas market was originally mentioned in a document dating back to 1628. Most of the products sold at the market are made by regional manu-

facturers; and the stalls are made of regional spruce trees, many of them originally constructed in 1890.

If food is your motivation, the Nuremberg Christmas Market has that covered. Lebkuchen was invented in the 13th century and

is sold in decorated tins. These tins have become highly sought after collector’s items. The way the sausages are made in Nuremberg dates back to 1497. Only sausages bought within the city limits are deemed “Original Nurembergers.” The sausage must weigh 23

grams and be as thick as your little finger. Wash it all down with Nuremberg’s Gerstacker blueberry Gluehwein, and you’re all set. You will be hard-pressed to find anything like it.

The Nuremberg Christmas Market runs from 10 a.m. to

9 p.m. every day beginning November 29 to Dec. 23., and on Christmas Eve until 2 p.m. The opening ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m.

WINTER HIKING WITH YOUR DOG

Hiking during winter months as the world transforms into a snow-covered wonderland can be a magical experience. One of the most striking aspects of winter hiking is the silence that blankets the landscape and the breathtaking views. And who to better share it with than your four-legged companion?

When it comes to winter hiking with your dogs, there are some important things to remember.

Not every dog is suited to hike in the cold. Some breeds, like the different types of sled dogs, are made for the cold weather and will need little or almost no gear. Breeds with longer fur might be able to stay warm longer but are prone to snow clumping. Short-haired dogs, or breeds without an undercoat will get cold faster. Remember too, that smaller dogs will have a harder time hiking through deep snow. Your dog should be physically fit and puppies or elderly dogs are better kept at home.

Even if your dog’s breed is built for cold climates, they might not be used to long hikes in snow. Tailor your hikes

to the needs of your dog and start with a shorter distance. The distance can always be increased over time considering your dog’s ability. Also remember that during the winter season trails may take longer and be tougher to hike than in warmer seasons. So, before you go on a hike check the trail conditions, since they can vary day to day, and rules, since some might not allow dogs during winter months.

Check the temperature to make sure it isn’t too cold. If it is above freezing, you can go on longer hikes. If there is any chance of a storm coming in or high winds leave your companion at home.

During the risk of a whiteout or low visibility conditions, stay at home.

Remember dogs can get frostbite

too, so if you need a balaclava, limit your time outside. If there is fresh snow and you will need to break trails, go on a shorter hike.

There are a lot of gear options that can help keep your dog comfortable and safe during a winter hike. From coats to dog shoes, even googles and sleeping bags are available. The clothing must be moisturerepellent and warm. Remember to bring winter-proof snacks and food, an insulated bottle with water and a foldable bowl. An insulated pad for your dog to lay on is also recommended, as direct contact with the cold ground should be, depending on breed, avoided. Bring a first aid kit, so you can treat injuries to paws caused by ice.

Keep your dog on a leash and harness

in high-risk areas, and be careful around lakes, streams and avoid avalanche areas altogether.

Pay attention to your dog and recognize their cues. If they start shivering, licking, chewing, dragging their paws it is time to stop. Other signs can be changes in behavior as in walking slower or their head is down instead of their usual alter posture, whining, whimpering, or barking, cold ears, inconsistent when it comes to recall or sitting down all together and not moving.

Be respectful of other hikers and remember that some might not like dogs as much as you do. Keep your dog from disturbing wild animals and always clean up after your dog.

FIVE STEPS TO BUILDING YOUR OWN HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

“Holiday traditions” are often so ingrained that we rarely stop to think about them. What happens, then, when you and your family move abroad and are cut off from grandmother’s pumpkin pie? Do you try to video-conference into a dining room filled with bleary-eyed loved ones nine time zones away? Do you desperately decorate your house with blazing lights and violate a dozen local ordinances in the process?

No. You do something better. You take a deep breath, get strategic, and build your own traditions. Doing so can create a lifetime of happy holiday memories. Even more importantly, this process may help avert future family holiday awkwardness. That alone should be enough to give this exercise a try. Ready to get started? Here are five steps to tradition-building mastery.

Step 1: Be intentional about acknowledging reality.

you do? Choose a moderator to make sure everyone participates.

Step 3: Dream big.

Keep the brainstorm going. You live in a place where the possibilities for holiday adventure are staggering. You could see northern lights in Scandinavia or sun yourself on Spanish beaches. Gorge on gasthaus Sunday brunches or fly to Bratislava to hunt for hand-painted holiday eggs. Wrap yourself in stinky Estonian spa mud or go for something more pine-scented in Karlovy Vary. All these places (and hundreds more) are available to you during the holidays. Many people back home would call them “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunities. And here you are…

When you move abroad, reality has a way of not being subtle. New rules, new languages, and new country codes are hard to ignore. But holidays are sneaky. Even in a new place, holidays tend to produce bubbles that fool us into thinking things haven't changed that much. To move forward, the bubble has to pop. So pull out a pen and write down what you loved about holidays past. Then acknowledge that some of those things are gone. If it helps, have a ceremony in which you say goodbye to them.

Step 2: Have a “holiday traditions” brainstorm — all brains are required.

Now that you’ve mourned the loss of what once was, focus on the present. Gather your family and begin brainstorming. Write everything down. Ask yourself — and answer — questions like: what do the holidays really mean? What do you like about them? What do you not like? If you were free to start from scratch — if someone, say, picked you up and set you down in a different country — what would

Step 4: Think long-term. By definition, traditions endure. But most of us are only going to be here, in Europe, for a finite period of time. The tradition-building process, however, is portable and highly adaptable. So when you move to Korea, Texas, Kansas, Italy, or wherever, take this process with you. Make tradition-building a tradition!

Step 5: Write down your plan and go.

Once you’ve mourned, brainstormed, and dreamed your way to what your family’s new holiday traditions could be, pick a short list of winners and write them down. Then stack hands and start executing the plan.

If you need inspiration, your home- built holiday traditions plan might look something like this:

• Take at least one holiday dream trip. For the moment, you’re a short (and usually cheap) flight away from Mediterranean islands, North Africa, the Arctic Circle, and many other spectacular places.

• Create a gratitude tree. Buy a posterboard, grab a Sharpie, and draw a tree — it doesn’t have to be fancy. Then each day in December, every member of the family creates a new “leaf” by writing down one thing for which they are thankful. On New Year’s Eve, gather as a family to read — aloud — what has been written. Do this every year, and do not throw these away. You’ll be amazed how meaningful they become over time, and how fun they’ll be to re-read as a family in the coming years.

• Each year, attend a holiday concert, ballet, religious service, or something similar in a language that is not your own.

• Make a small gift to a local charity, and then don’t mark them as spam when they send follow-up emails. It is good to remember that you once made a difference in the places you lived.

WINTER IS COMING

No matter what side of the wall you live on, there is no disputing that the glory days of Fall will soon enough be replaced by snow and ice. Now you live in the country of efficiency, you might as well go native and start planning your winter preparations now.

PREPPING YOUR BODY

Stay fit & healthy Winter’s an excellent time to indulge in comforting foods like pies and puddings. But your body’s immune system needs to be in place to cope up with attacking virus and being dehydrated.

Cold weather tends to cultivate two bad habits in people:

• drinking less water and hence snacking more;

• skipping breakfast due to darker, colder mornings.

Don’t be drawn into these bad habits. A strong immune system will reduce your chances of catching a common cold.

Use Autumn seasonal food to stock up on your zinc levels which are found in seafood, pumpkin seeds, beans, nuts and whole grains. This is especially important for men.

Leeks, sweet potatoes, garlic and leafy greens are all great foods for maintaining the bacteria in our digestive systems which is strongly linked to a strong immune system.

As the days become shorter and the temperature drops, our natural supply of vitamin D (known as the sunshine

vitamin) starts to drop. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium for healthy bones and also helps to keep our immune system rocking. Milk, egg yolks, salmon, tuna, beef liver and cheese are all sources of this important vitamin.

Exercise

Cold, dark mornings can be very compelling to continue sleeping in and wash out exercise routines till spring arrives. It’s not so much cold temperatures as the lack of bodily preparation that lands us sick or injured. Start a training plan now and make it a habit by winter — pick something that is going to be easy to maintain and you won’t ditch it at the first sign of bad weather. Choose something you enjoy — running, biking, swimming, dancing, zumba, spin-racing, boxing, aerobics. The options are endless so there is no excuse for not finding something that suits.

Having a training partner is great for motivation (and safety), as a few choice words can spur you on and help you find that extra bit of energy required to finish your run.

Alternatively, join a local club and train with other enthusiasts — a great way to stay safe and meet new people.

Skincare

Your skin needs extra care and attention as the weather changes. Adding extra hydration and protection now, will stand you in good stead come the big freeze. Moisturers needn’t be expensive, some of the best ones aren’t. But you will need a slightly heavier one that you might use in the summer, including a UV filter — winter sun is just as damaging as the summer rays.

You should continue to drink plenty of water throughout Autumn and Winter — as much as you would in the summer actually to ensure you are thoroughly hydrated inside and out. Your skin will thank you for it!

Clothing

Start looking around now for the right kind of winter clothing. Layering is best, and technical fabrics (breathable) even better.

For pre-loved ski and snowboard gear you can find exceptionally good deals on classified sites.

Don’t forget that sunglasses are also pretty essential here to prevent glare from low setting sun on gloriously sunny winter days.

PREPPING YOUR CAR

Winter tires

Your tires are the first thing you need to check — it’s the law! German regulations state that you must have winter tires on your car when the winter conditions including ice, black ice, frost, snow and slush are prevalent.

Winter tires are defined as having the markings M + S (mud and snow) on the side of the tire. Previously, drivers were allowed to use tires that only carried the “M+S” symbol, often also known as all-weather tires. Now, however, winter tires must also carry the “Alpine” symbol, which features a snowflake within a triangleshaped mountain symbol.

The consequences for not having the correct tires can be severe. High-performance “summer” tires

have little or no grip in snow. Not only are you risking the safety of you and your passengers, but other road users too.

The fine for being caught without the correct tires range from €60-120. Accidents with incorrect tires could also bring potential insurance implications, as well and they have the right to refuse part of your claim.

Because winter conditions can’t really be predicted or pinned down to a definitive date, most Germans use the rule of thumb O-to-O (Oktober to Ostern/Easter). Order your tires now and make the appointment with your local tire mounting service to have them changed.

Many companies, such as look4tyre.com in Kaiserslautern specialise in best price tires and fittings for Americans, including the use of VAT forms.

A factor that is often overlooked is the importance of maintaining correct pressure in your tires.

The main external factors governing tire pressure is temperature change. For every 10-degree change in temperature, a tire can lose approximately one pound per square inch (PSI). So, while your tires were properly inflated all summer, they now will require additional air to maintain the proper pressure as the temperature begins to fall.

Getting a tune up

Safety should be your first priority and so make sure to get a seasonal tune-up and winterize your car appropriately for the weather conditions. Tuning your car helps to maintain it so that the necessary repairs are done on time and your car is in good condition to avoid any mishap while you are on road.

If your car battery is more than

three years old make sure to test it. The average life of a car battery is less than five years. Checking your battery life will help you avoid the possibility of battery failures in cold winter conditions while you are on the road.

Visibility is one of the very important things for safe driving. Choose good quality wiper blades which are designed to resist ice or snow build up. They are not expensive, if necessary go wild and replace them both.

Make sure that your engine coolant levels are correct and that your fluid is ready for the winter. Check or change the bulbs in your lights.

Stocking up your trunk

It is a legal requirement to carry a first aid kit, warning triangle and high visibility vest in your car in Germany – this is applicable all year, not just in Winter.

If you live in a hilly or mountainous area, consider keeping snow chains in your vehicle to assist with treacherous road conditions. If you are a skiing family, you will need these to drive to many ski resorts anyway, especially in Austria.

Mucky windows are a curse and severe safety hazard during winter. Consider carrying an extra bottle of windshield fluid in your vehicle. Make sure you have a good spare tire, wheel wrench and proper jack for your vehicle.

Keep a couple of blankets and a few items of warm clothing in your car. Don’t forget your warm gloves — essential!

By preparing your body and your vehicle for the forthcoming winter now, you are going to be fitter, safer and will be in a much better position to enjoy the snowy season in Germany.

TEACH YOUR KIDS TO GIVE BACK!

December is right around the corner, and Christmas lists are flying through the mail in true first-class fashion. This is the time of year children live for — the pre-season warm up, scouting out toys in the ads and trying to remember that good behavior counts.

Parents are used to giving — it’s part of the job. Whether it’s time, money or attention, most mothers and fathers spend a good portion of their resources serving and caring for their children. But children have to be taught the fine art of service. There is no time better than the holidays to sneak in a few extra lessons on giving. Here are a few ideas to spark the real Christmas spirit of giving with your children this holiday season.

THE CHRISTMAS GHOST

This isn’t your typical ghost. The Christmas Ghost sneaks around doing nice things for other members of the family. Using either a wand or some tangible artifact to represent the Christmas Ghost, someone starts by secretly doing some act of service for someone in the family, like making a bed, and then leaves the Christmas Ghost marker behind. That person then follows suit and does some act of sneaky service for another family member. Children and grown-ups alike can snatch the wand when it’s out of play and practice “striking” random family members, always keeping it a secret. It makes service a fun family game, perfect for the month of December.

DONATING

Talk to your children about donating their toys to the local thrift store or to a family with young children who benefit from a collection of well-preserved toys. It’s not about de-junking; have your kids choose toys that are well cared for and special. There’s a feeling of satisfaction that comes from giving your best to someone else.

MANUAL SERVICE

Whether your neighbors are American or German, anyone can benefit from an extra dose of holiday kindness. Work together as a family to remove snow from a neighbor’s walk before school, or sweep the street for an elderly person. Just be sure to work together. Service that requires an extra bit of manual effort brings as much, or more, joy to the givers as they do the receivers. Don’t worry if your kids start out grumpy, you will end with a feeling of family togetherness and accomplishment that will leave every member with a smile.

CHRISTMAS ANGELS

If the Christmas Ghost isn’t your thing, try Christmas Angels. At the beginning of December, put everyone’s name into a bowl and have each person in the family draw someone. Keep the names a secret. Explain that during the month you will be secretly doing nice things for your person. At some point during the month, have a special gift exchange where everyone reveals who he or she had and gives that person a special present. Have them write a personal letter or draw a special picture to go with the gift. This works well with both little kids and older children, and the letters are far more valuable than anything you can find at the BX.

TAILOR AN ACTIVITY

It doesn’t matter what your family likes to do together, there’s a way to use it this Christmas. If your family is musical, have them perform at a hospital or church event. If they like to play sports, plan a special activity where you can help out at a preschool by playing with the children. If your kids are artistic, have them make Christmas cards for neighbors. Every family has something to offer. Find a place to use your hobbies to bring joy to others.

FRIENDSHIP DINNER

Invite a family that is new to the area, or that has a deployed parent during the holidays, for a preChristmas dinner. Have your children help with all the preparations. They can make invitations and plan the menu, decorate the table and help with the cooking. Learning to give friendship is one of the most important things to teach.

LET KIDS EARN IT

Help your kids earn their own Christmas money. Have them each set a goal of how much they want to earn then encourage them to find extra babysitting jobs or dog walking opportunities. Give younger children special Christmas chores, like cleaning the car or clearing out summer flower boxes. Make “Shopping Spree” jars for everyone to store their Christmas funds and then invite each child on a special “shopping date” with Mom or Dad to privately spend their money. This gives kids a sense of pride and ownership on Christmas morning.

CHRISTMAS LETTERS

Sit down with your children one night and write letters to grandparents or relatives expressing holiday wishes with love and gratitude on paper. There’s something special about getting a real letter in the mail, especially in today’s super tech world. Teach children the importance of saying “Thank you” in ink.

TASTERS NIGHT

If you live on the economy, you’ve likely had to reach out to your German neighbors for help. For those Germans who have welcomed you into the community, have your family plan a Tasters Night with American holiday food and invite them over as a “thank you” for their kindness in accepting you into their culture.

‘A CHRISTMAS STORY’

Try taking your children to a Christmas production like “The Nutcracker” or “A Christmas Carol.” If you cannot find a playhouse or movie theater, put on an old DVD or stream one of the classic movies. This a great way to make a family memory and teach children about giving.

HANDMADE GIFTS

Instead of taking them shopping for their friends or grandparents, encourage your children to come up with handmade gift ideas. For friends they can make pencil blocks (a drill and a block of wood), home cooked play dough or key chains. Use fabric markers and decorate handkerchiefs for grandpas or aprons for grandmas. The Internet is a live wire of hand-crafted kid creations, a little research and some extra time will yield a super special gift.

10 WAYS TO ENJOY WINTER IN CHAMONIX, FRANCE

Set in a gorgeous tree-lined valley and surrounded by massive, jagged mountains, Chamonix is a wonderland in the winter. Here are 10 tried-and-tested ways to have a blast in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

1. Go skiing (or snowboarding)

People come from around the world to ski and snowboard Chamonix. And yes, the ski areas are rad and generally great at accommodating skiers of all levels. But the entire experience in Chamonix is next-level. If you’re a beginner, the ski instructors are fantastic (and you can find excellent English speakers). If you’re an expert, then you’re in the place that invented extreme skiing. The views on clear days are staggeringly beautiful. And the vibe is outstanding; because you’re rubbing elbows with people from almost literally every continent, you meet a lot of cool people. And you learn that everyone on the planet wipes out in the same awkward way. Which is kind of comforting.

2. Shop, shop, shop

Chamonix’s downtown rocks. It has book shops, gear shops, art shops, a toy store, grocery stores, oddity shops, t-shirt shops with one-off custom designs that you can only buy in Chamonix, shoe stores, jewelry stores…you get the idea. Even people who don’t like to shop don’t mind shopping in Chamonix.

3.

Fuel your tank with great food

Chamonix is one of the best ski town dining destinations I’ve ever been to. And best doesn’t equal fancy (though you can totally go high-end in Chamonix). We’re talking outstanding slope-side food, reasonably cheap and high-quality

pizza, fondue galore, meats, cheeses, takeout, the works. It’s kind of like having access to big-city options in a small town setting. And then, of course, there are the pastries. This is France, after all. My last trip there, I had a new type of magnificent cake every single day. And never got tired of it.

4. Be a slack-jawed tourist

Which is to say: marvel at the incredible place in which you’ve found yourself. Stare unabashedly at the mountains. Take the tram to the top of Le Brévent and snap selfies with Mont Blanc over your shoulder. Sit on benches and just…take it all in. One of the best parts of going to a winter wonderland is appreciating the fact that you’re there.

5. Party like a Euro après-ski bum

If you’re into parties, you can find one in Chamonix. It rightfully has a reputation for having a terrific après-ski scene, with a good balance of chill vibes and Eurolevel raucousness. Start at a pub or a restaurant. Mingle with some of those people from around the world that you met on the slopes. Make new friends. Hit a night club, or a hotel bar, or a hole in the wall like Bar’d Up. Don’t worry about the fact that you’re still wearing a ski bib and a stocking cap. No one will judge you.

market, too. And, while it does not resemble a classic German version, it’s still a lovely experience. White lights strung across a stone and wood plaza. Stalls that sell sweets that actually taste like sugar was used. Funky keepsakes and sleek ceramics. Warm drinks and a gentle ambiance. It’s a good place to be.

7. Go sledding

Sledding mountains is So. Much. More. Fun. than sledding the occasionally steep and always bumpy river hills where I grew up. The Chamonix valley has multiple areas that are dedicated solely to sledding. You’ll find groomed runs, easy access, low costs (runs are generally free, but some areas require you to buy a pedestrian pass), and a time-tested way to wear out your kids (if you have them). Bring your own sled, or buy/rent one in town.

8. Ring in the New Year

New Year’s Eve in Chamonix is straight-up awesome. The “everyone is always in a good mood” vibe skyrockets to “everyone is in a fantastic mood.” Bars, restaurants, and shops throw parties. When the fireworks go off, it’s like something out of a dream, with the snow, the mountains, and the soft city lights. Ringing in a new year in Chamonix reminds you of all that can be good in the world.

9. Watch a ski race

One of the first times I went to Chamonix was during an era when Bode Miller and Alberto Tomba were skiing superstars (so, a while ago, then). I still remember seeing them downtown, and feeling the palpable excitement around the World Cup event. Watching worldclass skiing live is an incredible experience. It’s like watching a Formula 1 race or an NBA game, but without having to pay for tickets (that’s right, it’s free!). Look for events in January 2025.

10. Don’t fear the ice

There are two ice skating areas in Chamonix - one indoor, and one outdoor. Both are loads of fun and offer skate rentals. If you like hockey (or even if you think it would be a good cultural experience to watch a French hockey match (which it is), then you should check out the Chamonix Pionniers, who play in France’s first division. They have home matches all winter long. Ticket prices are very reasonable, ranging from €14-30 for adults, with reductions for families and for kids under 16.

HOLIDAY ALTERNATIVES TO TURKEY

If it seems like each holiday meal has become repetitive or if you simply want to try something a little different for your next big gathering, here a few recipes that can be used as alternatives to the standard turkey dinner.

Turkey is traditional and maintains a familiarity with many of those who love to cook, but mixing things up can spark interest when families and friends gather during the holidays and can also be a source of good memories to reflect on in later years.

Lemon Pepper Mackerel

Start to finish: 1 hour

Servings: 8

• 3 large mackerel fish

• 2 tablespoons butter with infused basil

• 2 teaspoons lemon pepper seasoning, mixed with crushed peppercorns

• 1 jar hollandaise sauce

Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rinse the fish and pat dry before lying them side-by-side on metal or glass baking trays.

Spread butter evenly over both sides of each of the fish, then handsprinkle the lemon pepper mix atop both of the buttered sides of the fish.

Place fish in the oven and bake 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove from the oven and liberally spread the hollandaise sauce onto both sides.

Replace in the oven and continue baking at 350 F for 20 more minutes.

Chuck Roast

Start to finish: 2 1/2 hours, once thawed

Servings: 8

• 5-pound roast

• 2 whole garlic bulbs, chopped

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon pepper

• 3 rosemary sprigs

• 4 potatoes, chopped

• 4 carrots, chopped

Thaw and/or let roast set in a refrigerator for at least 24 hours, then set out for 30 minutes prior to preparation. Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Carve small slices into the meat all around the exterior. Stuff each slit with pieces of chopped garlic. The garlic should be distributed evenly around and throughout the expanse of the roast.

Once the meat is cut and infused with the garlic pieces, liberally sprinkle salt and pepper all over the top, then flip it over and do the same to the bottom side.

Flip the roast back upright and prepare to bake by placing inside a roasting bag. The roast can be cooked without a bag, but using one will create a gravy juice that can be poured over the meat when serving.

Inside the bag, sprinkle a few rosemary sprigs all around the meat and add the cut potatoes and carrots before sealing the package.

If you don’t use a roasting bag, simply follow the same steps and cook instead in the roasting pan. Place the roast in the oven. Using a meat thermometer to check temperature, bake the roast until the temperature of the middle of the roast is 160 F, approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Spiraled Ham

Start to finish: 2 hours

Servings: 8

• 5-pound spiraled ham

• 1/4 cup cloves, ground or diced

• 1/2 cup brown sugar

• 1 can pineapples, sliced/round

Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Place the ham in a baking pan and put cloves inside the various layers of the spiraled ham. Next, sprinkle brown sugar on top of the ham and pat all over the surface.

Open the can of pineapple and pour the juice all across the entire ham, including into the various layers. Then cover the ham with the whole pineapple slices.

Cook for 60 to 90 minutes, turning and basting periodically while it cooks so the ham doesn’t dry out.

(Recipe submitted by Judi Vlassis)

Cornish Game Hens

Start to fi nish: 2 hours

Servings: 8

• 4 Cornish game hens

• 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

• 1 teaspoon seasoned salt

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon pepper

• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wash the hens well in a sink and pat dry with a paper towel. Hens need to be dried well before other ingredients are applied.

Rub or brush each hen with olive oil. Sprinkle a light covering of seasoned salt, followed by salt, pepper and garlic powder, sparingly. Be sure to turn the birds over during preparation to ensure full covering with all the seasonings.

Cook for approximately 70 to 90 minutes, checking to ensure the birds are cooking through completely and are not overcooking.

WINTER WONDERLAND GETAWAYS

Interlaken, Switzerland

Interlaken is Switzerland’s “city between the lakes,” nestled in the Swiss Alps of the Bernese Oberland region of central Switzerland. The twin lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, sparkle as they reflect the surrounding mountains that hold numerous hiking and skiing trails. Interlaken also holds history in the form of its monastery, which was active from 1133 until 1528 but is still open to the public. Though small, Interlaken is the perfect place to rest up before or after the hectic holiday season.

London, United Kingdom

Each of London’s famous attractions, from Big Ben to the London Eye, looks even more attractive when the city is blanketed in snow. London Christmas markets also draw a crowd. “The Christmas markets in London are so different from the ones in Germany,” said Jasmine Browne, wife of Staff Sgt. Cliff Browne. “My family and I try to make a trip there every year.” While Christmas markets are fun, the true culmination of Christmas in London is found in Trafalgar Square, home of the capital’s biggest Christmas tree. Christmas carol services envelope the tree for the entire month of December, and families are encouraged to attend.

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is the picture of a European fairy tale. Medieval buildings, cobbled streets and glistening canals come together to transport visitors into the past. Bruges is famous for the floodlighting of evening sunsets that emphasize the picturesque layout. If traveling in the winter, visitors have the city almost entirely to themselves, as it is the slow season for tourism. See the famous Belfort or any of the city’s museums without fighting the crowds during the holidays.

The winter holiday season is a popular travel period in Europe. Christmas markets in and around Germany draw large crowds from the KMC, but they are not your only options. Low-priced airfare and Europe’s interconnected rail system make many cultures and attractions well within your reach. Here are a few alternative destinations for your winter getaways that will not disappoint.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna is the perfect destination for arts fans of all ages. Classical music enthusiasts can attend concerts at the Vienna Concert House, where they will enjoy performances of Christmas carols and the New Year Gala. The culmination of Vienna’s winter concert season is “The New Year’s Concert” at the city’s Golden Hall of the Musikverein. Vienna is the perfect place to introduce children to the world of arts and culture. Rather than attend another production of the Nutcracker, visit Volksoper Wien, Vienna’s most popular opera house, for Hansel and Gretel, the classic story by the Grimm Brothers. Children will be drawn in by the beauty of the production, and families can relive the experience when they read the fairy tale for bedtime afterwards.

Prague, Czech Republic

Franz Kafka once said,

“Prague never lets you go.

This dear little mother has sharp claws.” This couldn’t be more true in the winter season. Prague is another city with minimal tourism during the winter, so heavy foot traffic won’t be an issue. The gas-lit street lamps and warm cafe hot chocolate more than make up for the cold. Visit Prague Castle, take the children ice skating in the city center or meander through Prague’s unique take on Christmas markets. Family fun waits around every corner.

Any one of these destinations would make for an outstanding family holiday in Europe. Do not let the cold keep you shut up indoors!
