Ramstein celebrates Diversity Day Story and photos by Senior Airman Branden Rae 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
The 86th Airlift Wing’s Special Observance Council hosted a Diversity Day at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center Mall, March 24. After nearly three years since the last Diversity Day, this event provided a venue to increase awareness and highlight the impact each diverse group has in cultivating our nation’s culture. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86 AW commander, opened the event emphasizing that diversity in the community is what gives it strength. “If we want a culture of diversity and inclusion, we must practice it daily, and instill it in our Airmen and our people, to set the success for our replacements and in our kids,” Olson said. “Diversity and inclusion is also about connecting with one See DIVERSITY DAY, Page 3

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Alexandra Longfellow 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs ANDRAVIDA AIR BASE, Greece — The U.S. Air Force is participating in INIOCHOS 22 at Andravida Air Base, Greece, from March 27 to April 8. INIOCHOS is an annual Hellenic air force-sponsored operational and tactical level field training exercise hosted by the Hellenic Air Tactics Center at Greece’s fighter weapons school and in various locations across Greece. “We are here strengthening NATO partnerships and strengthening our war-fighting readiness,” explained Col. Jason A. Camilletti, 48th Fighter Wing commander. INIOCHOS 22 is designed to provide advanced and realistic aircrew training to strengthen interoperability of allied and partner air forces during joint operations and air defenses in order to maintain joint readiness. The exercise aims to enhance combat readiness, fighting capability and the enhancement of the procedural and system interoperability of the participating forces, such as members from the United States, Greek, Cypriot, French, Israeli, Romanian, Italian, Slovenian, Austrian and Canadian militaries. “INIOCHOS 22 brings together
hundreds of participants in face to face planning, briefing and debriefing, thus maximizing training benefits and promoting cooperation and exchange of ideas on tactics, between participants with different experience,” said Brig. Gen. Nikoloas Kokkonis, Hellenic Air Tactics Center commander. Training with allies and regional partners allows for synchronized and prepared responses to regional security threats worldwide contingency operations. “The exercise exposes the participants to a multiple threat environment such as Anti-Access Area
denial, where long range surface based Air Defense Systems, 4th generation RED aircraft and Tactical Ballistics Missiles, form a multilayer challenge for Allied forces,” Kokkonis added. The exercise builds upon the nations’ joint capabilities, ensuring a much stronger partnership and enhanced interoperability. “The modern operational environment is dynamic and complex and in order to take control of it, we need to develop and maintain operational agility and synergy, which will allow us to employ, whenever is necessary, air power, across

domains in the most effective way,” Kokkonis added. Interoperability gives the opportunity for various allies to not only work together, but also allows the ability to learn from each other. “We hope to learn that there is a commonality of purpose and tactics and that we are coming from the same kind of place and together we can move forward and increase not only the individual unit readiness but the entire readiness of the alliance,” said Camilletti. The exercise also provides an opportunity for Airmen to enhance their professional relationships and
improve overall coordination with allies and partner militaries. “Soak it in,” Camilletti said. “An assignment at USAFE [U.S. Air Forces Europe] is like none other. We get an opportunity to go to cool places and meet cool men and women and do an important mission. That’s quite frankly, given the world events right now it is very front and center about how important it is.” INIOCHOS will continue to help improve and adapt the U.S. Air Force ability to complete the mission in new and more efficient ways.
Members from the 48th Fighter Wing at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, prepare for the INIOCHOS 22 exercise on March 21. Participation in INIOCHOS 22 will allow the opportunity for the U.S. Air. Force pilots to develop and improve air readiness and interoperability with allied and partner air forces.

I know we’re all excited to come together, and it’s a good way to meet people within our community and form connections.” Some of the ways the Air Force identifies diversity are personal life experiences, race, culture, spiritual perspectives, socioeconomic status, cognitive, behavioral, and occupational skills. Memorial ride participants and members of the 76th Airlift Squadron stand together before beginning the annual Grant’s Ride at Ramstein Air Base, March 24. Davis, a 76 AS evaluator communication system operator, was struck and killed by a vehicle while cycling off base on March 26, 2016.
Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 76th Airlift Squadron hosted its annual Grant’s Ride memorial event at Ramstein Air Base, March 24. The cycling event honors U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Grant Davis, who was killed by a vehicle while cycling off base March 26, 2016. Davis was a hardworking Airman assigned to the 76 AS, a unit that goes by the name “Fightin’ Doves.” During his time at Ramstein, he flew over 1,260 flight hours and 445 sorties, but he was also known for his passion for fitness and as an avid cyclist who rode his bike to and from work every day.
“This morning, I went to his roadside memorial,” Lt. Col. Melissa Dombrock, 76 AS commander, said. “On a sharp curve, next to the narrow road, there’s an old bike with our 76 AS patch and his bracelet. I reset the wreath of flowers and took a moment to say thank you and offer a toast to him. I feel very strongly the communal grief for having lost one of our own.” Dombrock also shared a letter with participants that she received from Grant’s father, Jeff Davis: “On behalf of my wife and children, we are happy that the members of the 76th Airlift Squadron are remembering Grant with a bike ride again this year. We do miss Grant. We know he loved to bike, and he had a deep commitment to the Air Force. Keep us in
mind during your ride. Thanks to you and all of the Doves for honoring our son.” This year’s ride gave participants the option of cycling on or off base. Participants who chose the off-base route carried flowers with them while riding to leave at Davis’ roadside memorial. The memorial ride, which encourages bicycle safety, serves as a celebration of Davis’ life and service and as a reminder to all motorists to be careful of their surroundings while on the road.

April is DOD’s Month to Recognize Military Children by Terri Moon Cronk Department of Defense News For nearly 40 years, April 1 has marked the Defense Department’s kickoff for the Month of the Military Child, and this month promises to be packed with events for parents and children of all ages, said a program analyst in DOD’s Children, Youth and Families, Office of Military Family Readiness Policy, Military Community and Family Policy. Dianna M. Ganote said DOD is supporting this month with the theme of mental health and the overall well-being of all military children. The Month of the Military Child is a time to focus on and celebrate the contributions of military children and the unique needs of their lives, she noted. The objective for this month’s recognition is to “highlight the unique life and challenges of military children. Our goal is to improve their quality of life and help mitigate the demands they experience from all the transitions, such as frequent moves, parental separations for military training and worrying about their parents when they’re deployed” Ganote said. While DOD sets aside April to recognize military children, support for them is present year-round, she noted. At the installation level, families will find such support resources as child development centers, youth centers, Military and Family Support Centers and military and family life counselors. tant mission of serving their country. “I’d like us to remember what military children’s lives are like and how unique their challenges. It’s quite incredible when we think about the transitions they go through that most children don’t, and our military children are so resilient through it all.” she said. And the color purple is important to the DOD community, because it reflects all branches of the military. “Across the nation, and around the world every April, states, governments, schools and families all do their part by wearing purple or shining a purple light on their homes, schools, state capitals and local landmarks,” Ganote said. “I would invite everyone to take a moment to support military children during April,” she said. Ganote highlighted how military children have a tough road to travel as an integral part of DOD’s readiness by moving approximately six to nine times in their lives. When their parents are deployed, their children’s milestones such as birthdays, the holidays and graduations are sometimes missed. But these children are not alone, she said, because without their children’s support, military parents wouldn’t easily handle the impor-

Story and photos by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Space Force Tech. Sgt. Hollie Baire, 86th Communications Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of the technical control facility, looks like your
average Guardian. But, there is more than meets the eye with this particular NCO. Baire was awarded the title of Airlifter of the Week for her outstanding efforts, which led to a high rate of increased efficiency in her shop, and she does not plan on slowing down anytime soon.
Baire led two four-member teams, to plan and configure $750,000 of new defense information systems. She also coordinated with the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron to survey and provide power to hardware specific equipment. “If it was just me I could not have accomplished this,” Baire said. “I have the best team anyone could ask for. I am just the face of the award. The stellar Airmen I lead should get all the credit. I am grateful for the title, but I want to pay it forward to them.” Baire, a true team player and leader, said no matter what accolade she has earned during her career, it was because of the hardworking and helpful people she serves with every day.
“These guys are champions and I owe all of it to them,” Baire said. “These are the unsung heroes of the [86th CS]. They come to work every day and make the magic happen. It’s an honor to work side-by-side with them.” Baire expressed that the inspiration behind everything she does is her daughter. “Behind all my personal growth and aspirations I had one driving factor — my daughter,” Baire said. “She is my whole world. Whenever I have a tough day, she is what cheers me up. I want to spend as much time as I can with her and watch her grow into the amazing person I know she will be.” Baire strives to create a healthy work-life balance. She

makes an effort to break away from the grind by enjoying time with loved ones and traveling when she can. “I love my job, but at the end of the day I just want to relax,” Baire said. “It can be hard to separate my home life and work life. I used to bring work home with me and it was causing me a bit of trouble. I just had to start saying ‘work will be there tomorrow,’ and enjoy time with my family. We are also in a prime location for travel so I try to go out and explore and get away from it all.” Baire said she is proud to have joined the Air Force, and then have the opportunity to transition to the Space Force. Her goal was to make a new start and see the world. “I wanted to get away from my hometown and make my own life,” Baire said. “I thought it would be a good idea and I could travel and meet people and have great experiences. It has worked out for me really well so far, and I am excited to see what new adventures are around the corner.”

21 TSC celebrates Women’s History Month
During Women’s History Month, we recognize Dr. Jennifer Lares, Mortuary Affairs Officer; Sarai Watkins, Family Readiness Support Assistant; and Staff Sergeant Zanyah Kabbaj-Spates, Career Counselor, from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, for their outstanding contributions to the unit.
Story and photos by Pvt. Samuel Signor 21st Theater Sustainment Command March is Women’s History Month and the United States Army celebrates and honors the accomplishments of female Soldiers and civilians across the globe. Women play a critical part in shaping today and tomorrow’s Army by setting the groundwork for future generations to make an even better Army. Dr. Jennifer Lares, a professor at Emory College and a Mortuary Affairs Officer for the U.S. Army Regional Mortuary Europe and Africa, sees the impact females are making on her career field. “I can tell you from observations of our admissions and registrations that we’re seeing three out of four females are mortuary students, and that’s a big trend and change from prior years on the industry as a whole,” said Lares. “I think as a whole, I can say from my observations here as well as within teaching that within, the field that more women are entering, there’s value being attributed to what they bring.” Staff Sgt. Sameen KabbajSpates, 21st Theater Sustainment Command Special Troops Battalion career counselor, found her purpose in the Army by working towards a goal.
“I wanted to find my purpose in service as a female,” said KabbajSpates. “I did not want to be the “useless female” or the female that was just getting by — I wanted to be the high performer.” Kabbaj-Spates’ motivation was her job and the Soldiers who surrounded her. “I wanted to impact the next generation of the Army, but I wasn’t the fastest, I wasn’t the strongest, I wasn’t a male, and I wasn’t empowered,” said Kabbaj-Spates. “Instead of chasing promotion I found a position that would give me that empowerment, purpose and the opportunity to affect every Soldier in my formation.”
Dr. Lares has first-hand experience with the impact stereotypes can play on someone being hired for a job or being judged just on appearance. “When I came out of Mortuary College and was looking for work as an intern as a young female in my 20’s, a pretty big problem I would run into was that they would look at me and assess me physically and assume that I wasn’t capable of lifting and moving things,” said Lares. Sarai Watkins, the 21st TSC Special Troops Battalion Family Readiness Support Assistant, states that passion plays a significant role in a person’s success.
AY MOND Y DA PASTA €5.50
“In such a male-dominated field, it can be very intimidating to join the Army or work with the Army,” said Watkins. “If working with the Army is something you’re passionate about, I say go for it and don’t let anyone deter you from your passion or dreams. Women are powerful and capable of anything we put our minds to. Be confident in your passion and stay the course.” Brig. Gen. Wanda Williams, commanding general, 7th Mission Support Command, plays a significant role within the European Theater. She is not only the commander of the 7th MSC, but she also serves as the 21st TSC dep-
uty commanding general. As a premier leader for the U.S. Army Reserve here in Europe, this is a month that is dear to her heart. “One out of every four Soldiers in the Army Reserve are women,” said Williams. “It is an honor for me, as an Army Reserve Soldier, to stand beside all of these dynamic Soldiers as we continue to contribute and uphold the legacy of the great ladies in the military that paved the way before us. This year’s theme is women providing healing and promoting hope, and I personally want to thank all of the brave female Soldiers and Civilians that provide that care to us all each and every day.”

April is Sexual Assault Awareness, Prevention Month The Ramstein SAPR Team and the Southside Fitness Center are hosting a series of events throughout the month to promote sexual assault awareness and prevention. Help us raise awareness!
CHALK THE WALK – SOUTHSIDE FITNESS CENTER, APRIL 13, 2-4 P.M. Come help by drawing your best sidewalk art in support of SAAPM or writing a message for survivors of sexual assault in front of the Southside Fitness Center. VOLKSMARCH - AN AWARENESS WALK & FAIR, SOUTHSIDE FITNESS CENTER, APRIL 14, 10 A.M.-2.30 P.M. Please come and support our main Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month (SAAPM) event! This awareness walk and fair will feature booths, activities, and visual installations sponsored by the Fitness Center and in collaboration with KMC helping agencies. Highlights: Victim testimonies, letters to survivors, SAPR bingo, DJ on-site, KMC agency educational booths. Drinks and snacks will be provided. SAPR punchcard: Complete your punchcard by visiting all of the educational booth and have a chance to win a prize! NATIONAL DENIM DAY – APRIL 27 Help raise awareness by wearing jeans on this day! Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April every year in honor of sexual assault awareness and prevention month. Peace over violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to the case and the activism surrounding it. Victim blaming is the attitude which suggests that the victim rather than the perpetrator bears responsibility for the assault. In an Italian supreme court ruling, a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans “she must have” helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. What started as a local campaign to bring awareness to the destructive myths, has grown into a movement as the longest running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history. Make a social statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconception that surround sexual assault.

How to tell if you have sleep apnea by Claudia Sanchez-Bustamante Military Health System Communications Do you sometimes wake up feeling tired, headachy, or have a sore or dry mouth? These could be symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, also known as OSA. It’s one of several common sleep disorders affecting service members. Getting proper sleep means sleeping at least seven hours a night and sleeping continuously through the night. Good sleep remains vital to service members’ physical and psychological strength and resilience. “OSA is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder,” said Army Lt. Col. (Dr.) Jennifer Creamer, a sleep specialist at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Yet it “remains undiagnosed in most affected men and women.” “It’s caused by the repetitive collapse of your upper airway during sleep,” she said. This occurs when your throat muscles relax, blocking your airway while you sleep. That makes it harder to get enough air, which decreases the oxygen levels in your blood, explained Creamer. Your brain senses your breathing problem and wakes you up briefly throughout the night so you can reopen your airway. Symptoms include loud snoring, choking or gasping. The repeated sleep interruptions can make you feel tired, irritable, or unfocused throughout the day. “Sleep fragmentation contributes to lighter and less restorative sleep,” said Creamer. It can affect your mood, your performance and your quality of life.
A service member participates in a sleep study at Madigan Army Medical Center, Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. Sleep technicians connect 26 sensors to patients that measure eye and muscle movements, brain activity, heart rate, and breathing. Photo by Staff Sgt. Christopher Klutts
The symptoms for women with OSA are distinct. Women are more likely to have insomnia and less likely to snore or show noticeable pauses in breathing, she explained. Still, several factors can influence a sleep apnea diagnosis, including excessive weight. Other risk factors include advancing age, having a recessed jaw or enlarged tonsils, Creamer added. Sleep apnea can also be linked with other health problems, such as heart, kidney, and pulmonary diseases; high blood pressure; and stroke, she
said. It can also contribute to depression or anxiety. How is it diagnosed? Health care providers can evaluate people at risk for OSA and order a sleep study to confirm evidence of the disorder. Some sleep studies require a patient to stay overnight in a sleep lab. Home sleep tests are also available. During an overnight lab study, a technician attaches electrodes to your scalp to record your brain waves. They also monitor your breathing, the oxy-
gen levels in your blood and your heart rate as well as your eye and leg movements during the night. The home tests use breathing monitors with sensors that track your breathing and oxygen levels. One type has a probe that goes over your finger and the other has probes over your finger, under your nose, and on chest belts. How is it treated? Depending on each patient, doctors can recommend numerous treat-
Who’s at risk for OSA? OSA can affect anyone at any age. However, it affects younger men at a higher rate than younger women, Creamer said. Among older people, that gender gap closes. “Sleep apnea increases in women at the time of menopause,” she said.
For more information, or if you’re concerned that you may have OSA, see your primary care provider for further evaluation. If you meet criteria, your provider can refer you for a sleep study. Some sleep studies are covered by TRICARE on https://www.tricare. mil/CoveredServices/IsItCovered/ SleepStudies.

ments for mild OSA. Losing weight can be helpful. Another tactic is to change your sleeping position, such as sleeping on your side if your OSA occurs when you sleep on your back, continued Creamer. Reductions in smoking or alcohol consumption can also reduce OSA, according to the National Institutes of HealthNIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute website on sleep apnea. Another option is to wear a device over your teeth while you sleep. It fits over your teeth like a retainer to keep your jaw in a forward position and keep your airway open. For moderate to severe OSA, treatment options include upper airway surgery or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, known as CPAP, therapy. CPAP machines use a facemask and mild air pressure to keep the airways open.

German Rental Security Law in a nutshell Photo by Andrey_Popov/Shutterstock.com
by Joerg Moddelmog Senior German Attorney 21st Theater Sustainment Command Many American personnel live off-post in rented quarters. The landlords almost always require payment of a security deposit. Under German law, landlords may ask for a deposit not to exceed three-months’ net rent. However, the tenant has the right to make the rental security deposit payments over a threemonth period in three equal monthly shares. The landlord has to keep the rental security deposit apart from his other assets and has to deposit it with a banking institution at the usual rate of interest for savings deposits with withdrawal notice of three months (§ 551
para. 3 BGB, German Civil Code). The interest drawn by the deposit accrues to the tenant annually and increases the rental security deposit. However, what happens when the bank does not offer any interest but charges a deposit fee, effectively negative interest, and thus reducing the amount paid in rental security? The answer depends on the market situation, i.e., whether negative interest has become customary. As long as there are banks that do not charge a negative interest, the landlord will have to switch the account to a corresponding bank in order to comply with his statutory obligation to keep the rental security deposit in an interest accruing account. The purpose of the rental security is to cover the landlord for
potential damages if the tenant fails to fulfil his obligations under the lease. Therefore, the landlord has an interest of his own to sustain the amount and to have it increased over time by accruing interest although he merely holds the money in escrow as it still belongs to the tenant. Likewise the tenant does not want to see his money diminished for the tenant is responsible to keep the rental security deposit at the agreed upon amount. If negative interest cannot be avoided, the tenant will be under an obligation to fill up the account to the agreed upon amount of rental security. The tenant also has to bear the bank charges associated with maintenance and closing the account. To avoid the aforementioned fees and risks, the landlord
and the tenant could mutually agree, instead of paying the rental security deposit into an escrow account, to allow the tenant to present a bank guarantee to the landlord. A tenant is entitled to a return of the deposit only after the premises have been turned back to the landlord. And while the landlord has to be afforded a reasonable period of time for the return the security deposit - usually 6 to 12 months - the movingout protocol should help to speed up this process and lead to at least a partial repayment of the rental security deposit; interest remains accruing on the portion still withhold. It is recommend putting a clause in the rental agreement specifying the terms of return/settlement.
If the premises have been sold, the new owner/landlord has to pay back the rental security deposit to the tenant, even if the former owner/landlord did not transfer it to him/her. In any case, the former owner remains liable as a secondary debtor if the tenant cannot obtain the rental security deposit from the new owner/landlord. Finally note, a tenant may not set off the rental security deposit against any rent payments due, unless the landlord agrees to it. An exception applies where the landlord — despite the tenant’s request – fails to demonstrate his compliance with the statutory or contractual rental security rules. Before taking such action, the tenant should obtain legal advice.

Frohe Ostern — Happy Easter!
Easter trees, egg shootings, bonfires, bunnies on the beach
Many Easter traditions, such as the Easter bunny, egg hunts and chocolate or candy bunnies, are quite similar in the U.S. and in Germany, however, there may be a few customs you are not familiar with. In Germany, Easter is historically a Christian holiday with church services on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Both Good Friday (April 15) and Easter Monday (April 18) are public holidays in Germany and all stores, banks and official offices are closed. Switzerland

by Germans, may not be so familiar. Tradition has it that some families only eat pure vegetarian meals, preferably in green. Popular dishes include spinach with potatoes and fried eggs, potatoes with green herb sauce, a specialty from Frankfurt, or egg salad with mustard and herb dressing. In honor of St. Peter, who was a fisherman, fish is typically served, fried or steamed, on Friday. Salmon with potatoes and green asparagus is popular, while kids may prefer simple fish sticks. An Easter Sunday dish could be “falscher Hase” (false rabbit), a type of meatloaf, or the traditional Easter lamb, served with rosemary potatoes and fresh spring vegetables. Typical desserts include carrot cake, a braid shaped cake called “Osterzopf” or cakes and cupcakes with fresh fruits and cream. Chocolate Easter bunnies, eggs, chicks and other sweets remain the all-time favorites for younger (and older) children. Easter bonfires are lit in some villages, which traditionally served to drive winter spirits away. In some parts of Germany it is common to burn rotten wood and old furniture, no longer needed clothes and shoes, and even rags in the “Lumpenfeuer” (rag
bonfire), so as to clear the house of unnecessary items, an early form of spring cleaning. A popular sport during the season is “Ostereierschiessen” (Easter egg shooting). Contestants shoot at paper goals marked with Easter figures or eggs with the aim of hitting as many “eggs” as possible. Each successful shot brings about a real egg and the winner of a whole tournament is crowned as the “Schützenkönig” (champion marksman). You may find colorfully decorated flower bouquets or even wreaths with bright spring flowers such as crocus, primroses, tulips, daffodils and Easter ornaments in households and stores. Others decorate pussy willow or forsythia branches with small wooden eggs, bunnies or lambs or tidy up their front yards by hanging ornaments on bushes. Some communities even offer colorful and elaborate Easter trees in traffic circles or on market squares. A somewhat older tradition is to pull moss from below trees and shrubs and bind it into natural Easter baskets for the bunny to fill with eggs and small gifts. Self-made willow baskets are also popular and younger families might plant wheat seeds into a glass bowl or vase about three weeks prior to the holiday for children to watch the KAISERSLAUTERN Easter nest grow. North and Baltic Seas, the Easter bunny likes to hop around the beach, lay eggs in the sand and children can dig for the precious “seafood” with buckets and shovels. Have you ever wondered why bunnies, rather than hens, deliver the eggs? Rabbits have historically been seen as a symbol of fertility (offspring can be up to 20 bunnies). In addition, in Byzantium a rabbit was an early symbol for Christ. Both in Greek and Germanic mythology, rabbits were considered to be holy animals for Greek Goddess Aphrodite and for Germanic Spring and Fertility Goddess Ostera. According to legend, children were sent to meadows to search for eggs in Zürich, Switzerland, and since they more often saw rabbits than hens, they believed that the long-eared animals had left the eggs. In Germany, the rabbit first became popular in 1678 (Reformation time) by Protestant families and the bunny finally became a “star” thanks to the chocolate industry. The Easter season can offer a lot of fun and some communities hold Spring or Easter Markets around the holiday. 10 Handwrit ing Tips… no pencil required! by Lisa Helenius GrowingUpTherapy.com Is your child learning handwriting in school? Are you wondering how to support this process at home? Did you pick up a pencil and promptly break it in half at the mere thought of this endeavor? Handwriting readiness is a tricky topic. Some children show an interest in learning to write as early as preschool. While this is great for some children, it is not very common and should not be expected of most children. In fact, the brain and body are not developmentally ready for handwriting until about 5-6 years of age. So, what can you do? These tips can help avoid frustration and maximize success! 1. Start with shapes. There’s actually a hierarchy of what is easiest to learn up to what is hardest. Have your child practice drawing a plus sign, circle, square, triangle and… very last… a diamond. Being able

to copy a diamond correctly is actually an easy readiness “test” for handwriting. People, too. Have your child draw a picture of a person or complete a drawing you make by adding “missing parts.” Sensory drawing. Paint shapes on butcher paper at an easel or on the wall. Draw with a q-tip dipped in paint. Use a spray bottle and a kitchen sponge to draw shapes during clean up time on the kitchen table. Coloring is key. Coloring builds up endurance and visual-motor control. If your child’s grasp is “funky,” a simple tip is to break off a tiny piece of crayon. About 1 inch long. This way, his/her fingers have no choice but to use a proper, tripod grasp. Big to small. It is much easier to use big muscles to learn a motor pattern. Have your child practice shapes and letters by drawing on the carpet or in the dirt with his/her toe or with
a stick. You can also practice on the wall in the shower with shaving cream or foam soap. Grab a party streamer and try it in the sky, making big strokes above your head! 6. Easy to hard. On that note… it is developmentally easier to learn “straight line” letters, such as an “L” or an “F” and it is hardest to learn diagonal lines, such as a “K.” Also, upper case letters should be learned first, as they occupy the same space and don’t “dip down” or “go high” like lower case letters. 7. Chalk — old school is best. Did you know that drag feedback into the small muscles in the hand reinforces correct
motor patterns? Have your child use sidewalk chalk to draw and trace or use a good old fashioned chalkboard. This is actually how the “Handwriting Without Tears” program teaches letter formation. www.lwtears.com 8. Clay writing. Get some modeling clay. Spread it on a cookie sheet. Grab a wooden dowel or chopstick. You draw a shape or letter lightly and have your child press firmly to trace. 9. Guessing game. Draw a letter on your child’s back or on the palm of their hand with your pointer finger or the eraser on a pencil. Let them guess and then try to draw it on your back or hand.
10. Start at the top. Almost all letters should start at the top. Reinforce this basic rule during practice. You can also practice “start at the top” strokes by having your child add lots of vertical lines to a “birthday cake” that you have drawn. These pointers should point you in the right direction. Pun intended! Author’s profile: Lisa Helenius is a practicing occupational therapist with over 25 years of pediatric experience. She currently is a partner at Growing Up Therapy. the call. You won’t be disappointed. Let’s begin in the ivy-shrouded tea room at river’s edge. Located near one end of the ancient stone bridge that spans the river from the valley village of Llanwrst, it looks like a hobbit house or something from a fairy tale. But this place — the Tu-Hwnt-I’r Bont tea room — is sturdy and real. Duck through solid wooden stable doors and nestle up to a worn table near a crackling fire. Biting rain swirls outside, and no matter. Here, in the coziest spot in northern Wales, travelers can take a cup of tea, a warm plate of bread and melted cheese known as Welsh rarebit, and get down to discussing the wonders outside. Take the mountains. They’re everywhere, and are remarkable in their diversity. Jagged peaks loom in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. Wild moors, golden and windswept, cover treeless hills as far as the eye can see. Emerald forests swallow valleys and stretch along ridges. In Wales, one doesn’t hike these hills. One walks them. And they make for quite the walk. On a March morning at dawn, for instance, an hour of lung-busting uphill walking can bring you to the top of Ro Wen, a bold, bald ridge that towers above the village of Dolwyddelan. The sky is clear and snow covers distant peaks, testament to last night’s weather. It’s hard to admire the view for long, though. Hundred-kilometer-per-hour winds scream in from the sea: they are strong enough to topple a grown man. Even so, it’s amazing to take in the ancient stone shelter on the peak and the brilliant colors all around — golds, greens, whites, and blues. Then there is the sea, which is never far from even the most hidden mountain valley. This proximity to the

water is a feature that makes northern Wales special, locals say: you can find so much natural beauty in one compressed spot. The Welsh coast contains multitudes. There’s Conwy, for example, a safe harbor that is home to a magnificent castle and the UK’s smallest house. Less than an hour to the west, one can visit the wild, steep cliffs near Trefor, which offer spectacular sea views as well as narrow sheep trails that lead to smooth stone beaches and hidden coves. Finally, and naturally, northern Wales is a place of good cheer. Cozy cottages, warm pubs, fireplaces, and friendly people can be found everywhere. Shelter is an art form here, and few things are so comfortable as coming in from the wild. Some of the best tea rooms in the world are found in northern Wales, like Tu-Hwnt-I’r Bont or Ty Hyll, located in the woods near Betws-y-Coed and now known by English speakers as the (very inaptly named) Ugly House.
