ELEFSIS AIR BASE, Greece — U.S. and Greek service members arrived for Exercise Stolen Cerberus IV, a routine bilateral training deployment, at Elefsis Air Base, Greece, April 18. “The purpose of this exercise is to improve our C-130J training while building partnership, capacity, and capability with the Hellenic air force here in Greece,” said 1st Lt. Aven Claire Sanders, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot. “We’re focused on up-training and our own improvements with new training techniques and scenarios while working with the Greeks.” Approximately 110 Airmen and three C-130J Super Hercules aircraft from the 37 AS, will participate in the exercise with the Hellenic air force and the U.S. Army until April 28. “It is extremely important that we train and exercise together,” said Capt. Ryan Brooks, mission commander for the exercise. “Not only does it make us better as individual units, but when it comes to moving forward and having to come together as an alliance, we know how each of us are going to act in a certain situation and can execute the intended plan in an effective manner.”

The Airmen will work alongside aircrew, maintainers, and paratroopers from the Hellenic armed forces, as well as work jointly with U.S. Army Soldiers from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 5th Quartermaster Company. During the exercise, U.S. service members will work alongside the Hellenic air force to participate in personnel, cargo, and low-cost, low-altitude drops, as well as search and rescue missions. “I’m hoping our service members learn and experience working with another military and become better overall Airmen and Soldiers,” Brooks said. “I hope we have a good forward training deployment out here and I’m excited and look forward to expanding our abilities as an Air Force and working with our NATO allies.” Through exercises such as this, the U.S. strengthens its partnership with its North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies.

Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the 1st Combat Communications Squadron along with 37th Airlift Squadron Airmen pack like pros to load a deployable navigational aid onto a C-130 April 15 on Ramstein. “It’s not an everyday piece of equipment,” said Staff Sgt. Cory Martin, 1 CCS airfield systems supervisor. “The equipment barely fits into the C-130 so we have to work hand in hand a lot with the 37 AS to train regularly just because they don’t see that a lot. The equipment was on its way to support the 122nd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron for joint training in Romania. “Our equipment is a navigational aid so that pilots can go out on their mission and find their way back to the base.” Martin said. The Tactical Air Navigation System works simply by receiving a signal from incoming aircraft and then sending another signal back to the aircraft. From that

point, computers calculate the bearing and distance of the aircraft which allow the air traffic controller to assist the aircraft in landing. The operation aims to foster positive international relations through cooperation with our allies. “This mission is a part of the theatre security package. It’s going to support our NATO allies,” said Tech. Sgt. Franklin Wilson, 1 CCS non-commissioned officer in charge of deployable air traffic control and landing systems. “This is where we exercise with them and show off our capabilities and teamwork with our NATO personnel.” In deployed locations, Wilson said there are only three pieces of equipment needed to set up an air strip. “The radar, air traffic control tower, and the TACAN work in unison,” said Wilson. “The radar goes around in a 360 degree and gets a picture of what’s out there. Aircraft, weather, landscape; it’ll give you the whole picture. That’s how the air traffic controller who’ll be either sitting in the tower or the radar portion can see out to about 200 nautical miles.

“From there the tower would take over and the air traffic controller would talk to the pilot themselves and guide them down to the runway,” Wilson said. “The TACAN is what the plane

sees, it sends signals to the plane and the plane can use that guidance to make it to the runway.” Postured to respond with world-class airlift and expeditionary combat support, the 1 CCS continues to assist Ramstein in strengthening partnerships between our NATO allies.

“We can go set the TACAN up and it would be like opening an airfield. The air traffic controllers would have all of the capabilities of a fixed air base,” Wilson said. “As long as they have it laid out and have a runway, we could set up and they could operate just as normal.”

Securing the ‘third runway’ in cyberspace The 86th Airlift Wing gen erates and employs air mobil ity and operates key Air Force power projection platforms. Less commonly known is that Team Ramstein also operates a power projection platform in cyberspace. You can’t see it, but Ramstein hosts a “third runway” where cyberspace operations occur daily over ter restrial and satellite commu nications links. This third run way is called the Air Force Information Network, or AFIN. The Command Cyber Readiness Inspection sched uled for May 22 through 26 is an inspection of the cyber security posture of Team Ramstein’s segment of the AFIN led by the Defense Information Systems Agency, or DISA. The CCRI will mea sure our technical and oper ational compliance against cybersecurity and computer network defense policies. It is the Cyber Superbowl, and will validate our cur rent cybersecurity posture and inform us how we can become even more secure. While the 86th Com munications Squadron takes a leading role in authoriz ing administrators, operating and maintaining base infra structure, and supporting net work users on Ramstein and in the KMC, the 86 AW is not the only unit inspected under the CCRI. The KMC is home to 13 fulltime com munication units, including the Department of Defense Information Network hub for U.S. Air Forces in Europe Air Forces Africa as well as numerous organizations with cyberspace support and oper ations personnel dedicated to operating and maintaining discrete missionenabling net work systems. Each and every member of Team Ramstein has a role in ensuring our col lective success for this impor tant readiness inspection. There is no doubt that Airmen are the first line of defense when it comes to cybersecurity. Cyber attacks come in many forms… from large government funded efforts to the single insider

threat. It is incumbent upon all Airmen to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. By exercising the routines below, you are doing your part in keeping the third run way secure. • Log out and restart comput ers daily. This allows for proper installation of secu rity patches and updates. • Know your unit Cybersecurity Liaison. They are your first focal point for all cybersecurity matters. • Only connect authorized USB devices into gov ernment computers. USB devices are a vector for malicious logic and can expose us to intrusion. • Always secure Common Access Cards and network tokens. • Always encrypt email con taining FOUO information. • If you have Secret Internet Protocol Router (SIPR) computers, turn them on during the network scan windows for application of security patches and updates. • Never leave an active SIPR machine unattended. The 86 CS works hard to ensure Ramstein’s network is configured properly and com pliant with cybersecurity and

computer network defense policies, but it takes effort from every Airman to keep

our networks secure. Through our collective efforts we can ensure a positive outcome not

only in the upcoming CCRI but as we operate the third runway 365 days a year!

Deployed-in-place – building resiliency by Tech Sgt. Darnell T. Cannaby 480th Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance Wing Public Affairs Tackling how to normalize and strengthen resiliency for Airmen who never leave the battlefield because they may be involved in operations during the day and go home to see their daughter’s ballet recital is a striking paradigm. Deployed-in-place Airmen working in the intelligence community encounter these unique stressors that demand solid resiliency habits and rituals to maintain peak performance levels across the course of their careers. The 450th Intelligence Squadron, in partnership with the 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance Group’s Airmen Resiliency Team, host a monthly Warbird Resiliency Week at Ramstein. This program provides a venue for deployed-in-place Airmen to collectively discuss how they deal with the stressors of having such a lifestyle and offer a normalized, phased resiliency period for every squadron member. “No one questions the importance of routine preventative maintenance on a privately owned vehicle, or phased maintenance for aircraft. Things and people tend to break down over time in the absence of regular maintenance,” said Maj. Reed Reichwald, 693 ISRG director of operational psychology. “Motivation to maintain all the healthy habits we know that we should sometimes give way to the pressures of our lives and jobs.” Resiliency week is a four-day prevention program targeted to all Airmen of the 693 ISRG. It’s comprised of lessons such as whole person wellness, relaxation training and mission nutrition; along with team building activities like blind puzzles, yoga and hikes.

“I personally enjoyed the relaxation discussions the most,” said Tech Sgt. Heather, 450 IS, who participated in resiliency week. “I have a hard time transitioning from a work-to-home mentality on a daily basis; a lot of stressors and frustrations from the day stick with me throughout the night. It was extremely beneficial to be able to discuss similar relaxation issues with other members of our squadron and we were offered a lot of practical and tailored suggestions to help us improve. I’ve since applied quite a few of those suggestions and it really has made a difference.” Resiliency Week borrowed from the model used by the Deployment Transition Center for the traditional downrange redeployer and combined that with Comprehensive Airmen Fitness pillars used by the Airmen Resiliency Team for deployed-inplace Airmen. “Programs like the resiliency week are perhaps a natural outgrowth of (former 480 ISR Wing commander) Brig. Gen. Jeff Kruse’s decision to embed Airmen Resiliency Teams comprised of medical, mental, health, and religious support assets at key locations across the enterprise,” added



Reichwald. “Forward-leaning leaders across the Wing have leveraged ART resources in a variety of ways to ensure that their Airmen are being taken care of, and learning the skills they need to maintain peak performance in a very demanding, high-ops tempo environment. Resiliency week is just one instance of commanders’ efforts along these lines.” Occupational health research from the Remote Pilot Aircraft / Distributed Common Grounds System communities suggested the need for a variety of interventions to improve the health, well-being, and quality of life for deployed-in-place Airmen. “While we do not face the difficulties inherent to a deployment in austere locations; DCGS Airmen and other teams in the 480 ISRW face difficulties that have stressful impacts due to our mission,” said Capt. John, 450 IS, who participated in the resiliency week. “Resiliency week presents a prime opportunity for decompression and morale improvement while simultaneously imparting information that may be new to first term Airmen and reenforcing key tools and resources to supervisors.” Initial feedback from the resil-

This course will run two concurrent courses, one for the 450 IS and one for the 24 IS. This expansion is the first step in scaling the program for broader resiliency across the 693 ISRG. Resiliency week at DGS-4 is made possible, in part, due to the partnership with the DTC, which is committed to serving deployed-in-place Airmen and helping the Air Force community understand the unique demands placed on Airmen as the way we fight our nation’s wars continues to evolve. “The human weapon system is the Air Force’s most extraordinary asset, and it requires routine preventative maintenance in order to maintain peak performance over time,” said Reichwald. “Our Airmen’s efforts along these lines will not only optimize their performance at work, but at home, and in their relationships, and it will help them to find purpose and drive them toward achieving their goals in all aspects of their lives.”

Air Force senior enlisted leaders conduct full EPME review by Senior Master Sgt. Katherine Grabham Office of the Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force WASHINGTON (AFNS) — More than 40 Air Force senior enlisted leaders and subject matter experts met at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, April 4-5 to perform an extensive review of all facets of enlisted professional military education during the 2017 EPME Triennial Review. “We reviewed every level of EPME provided to our enlisted Airmen, from policy to content to delivery,” said Chief Master Sgt. JoAnne Bass, the chief of Air Force Enlisted Developmental Education. “This forum discussed in great length the educational component of the continuum of learning as well as the other components, training and experience, and how we can maximize leader development to build strong, resilient Airmen.”

The intent of the two-day review was to examine the state of enlisted education and the changes implemented since the last review while identifying target areas of improvement. Additional time was dedicated to analyzing issues associated with effectively executing the continuum of learning. “The triennial review is critical to the evaluation of EPME’s alignment with Air Force priorities and force development strategies,” said Russell Frasz, the Air Force director of force development. “We must ensure our Airmen are developed and ready to meet future mission challenges in joint, coalition and multi-domain environments.” Working groups were formed following the triennial review, tasked with providing the Air Force’s policy and decision makers with proposed courses of action. The groups will develop plans of action for possible changes, including when in an Airman’s career

education should be delivered, potential content delivery models, and how to smoothly transition any potential changes into currently existing EPME frameworks. The EPME triennial review provided the perfect forum for Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright to address training, which he established in February as one of his three key focus areas. “From day one, one of my objectives within this focus area has been to ensure timely, focused and operationally relevant training solutions at all levels,” Wright said. “We need to work toward eliminating redundant, ineffective or superfluous training.” Members of the triennial review process also focused on ways to align EPME with Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein’s focus area of revitalizing squadrons. Wright said that in order to maximize a squadron commander’s effectiveness and revital-

ize the squadron as a place where warfighting excellence is fostered, the Air Force needs well-trained, motivated and professional enlisted corps. “Airmen have spoken and we’re listening,” Wright said. “They have been clear that they want professional education and development, but they don’t believe the way the current content is being delivered, especially through the existing distance learning framework, is developing them in ways they value or find meaningful. We’re keeping that feedback in the forefront of our minds as we move forward developing our (course of actions).” The working groups are expected to move quickly, developing suggested COAs over the next few months. This will allow senior enlisted leaders time to package actionable items for delivery to decision makers following the next enlisted force development panel meeting in the fall.

The beaten path: An Airman’s 381-mile walk for refuge (Part II) Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Staff Sgt. Martha Otto’s excitement began to soar as a helicopter landed at Kakuma refugee camp in Northwest Kenya, November 2000. The former South Sudanese refugee and recent 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron training manager survived gruesome attacks caused by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army, and waited anxiously for her and her older brother’s departure to the U.S. “I was so excited about it all,” she said, recalling her neighborhood’s tall American tales. “I remember being told ‘you don’t have to worry over there.’ If you want to go somewhere, they have these special shoes you put on and hit a button and it takes you somewhere.” Otto said she believes the magic shoes they talked about were roller skates. For someone who grew up walking from village to village her entire life, the idea was captivating. “I was going to finally see the place where food comes out of the wall!” she chuckled. Otto had only been in a car a handful of times in her life and was giddy with anticipation as they rose above the hardened, Kenyan ground during her first helicopter ride. While traveling to Nairobi Airport, the turbulent helicopter welcomed the fourteen-year-old’s motion sickness. Yet, no amount of vomit could wipe the smile off her face. “I threw up everywhere!” she exclaimed, laughing. They reached the big city airport and Otto was astonished by the technology, infrastructure and people. “The airport was beyond a village,” Otto said. “I was like, ‘this cannot be real’. I’ve never seen a regular bath-

room before where you push a button.” Several flights and time zones later, the Ottos hit U.S. soil. They signed their names at Ellis Island and caught another flight to the Midwest, just in time for a Nebraska winter. “We got to Omaha Nov. 6, 2000. I was wearing a skirt, a button down shirt, my best shoes were flip-flops and everything I owned was in a plastic bag. It was freezing outside and it was snowing... I’d never seen snow before. That was the beginning of my life as I have it now, in America.” The teenagers were part of a program helping sponsor war-torn civilians to the states. Once refugees receive a job, they pay the trip fees back to the program so the program can continue paying it forward and help other refugees migrate to the U.S. They lived with their sponsor for a few months, who also assisted with their personal transitions. Rationing for food and searching for safety came to a close, but Otto still had many obstacles to overcome her culture shock. The East-African native had never seen a computer, let alone use it to complete her school work. Her new school was a frigid 45-minute walk every day. But, she said, as many times as she felt like quitting, she heard her mother’s voice echoing in her head: “Better not stop going to school! If you don’t get your education there’s no other way of making it,” Otto said, remembering her mother’s words. “You have to get your education. The education you have will open doors for you, that even me, your mother, I cannot open for you.’” A month later, Otto moved to a closer school and the siblings rented their own apartment. Throughout the next few years, the orphaned teenager persevered working various jobs, taking night classes and attending sum-

mer school. She earned her high school diploma in 2003, at approximately the age of 19. Otto attended college for a short time and turned to the Air Force when searching for other ways to pay for school. She left for basic military training in May 2007, and continually looks to build on becoming a better person. “I try to improve myself every day and try to make myself a better person every day,” Otto said. “I feel like because of my obstacles, I missed a lot of lessons and things I should have known; I never stop learning.” Otto graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice in 2012 from Saint Leo University in Tampa, Florida. The technical sergeant-select is passionate about using her experiences to encourage others. She shares her story at private events focused on resilience. “I think of what had happened to me and how I grew up, I have this need in me to have to help people,” Otto said. “I have to help even if it’s my last dime; I have to do something. I’ll put myself in strain to make sure another person is okay.” Otto has two nieces and a nephew today, who are walking the same beaten path she did years ago at a camp ten kilometers from Uganda’s Achol-Pii. The war in South Sudan continues. According to Mercy Corps, a non-profit organization, six million citizens have been forced to flee their homes, making it the third-most fled country in the world. More than 1.5 million people are

on the brink of famine while many are already dying from starvation. Otto is driven to change her family’s fate and open doors of opportunity. This past month the children were able to leave their refugee camp to attend boarding school because of her financial assistance. “In all this, I’m grateful for a lot of things. I’m really grateful for the U.S., to allow me the opportunity to come and be part of their society. To whoever it was who picked up my application and said yeah…we’ll take this group of refugees; that is one thing I’m really, really grateful for. Another thing I’m grateful for is being a part of the most powerful Air Force in the world. I have no words. Nobody [growing up] knew me to be in one of the most respected Armed Forces.” The 10-year Airman attributes her motivation and successes to the supportive friends she has made during her time in service. She believes success is based on being able to give back and have more impact in making a difference in other people’s lives. The root of her strength stems from her arduous journey fleeing the LRA’s gruesome attacks in addition to her mother’s lessons, an intrinsic drive to help others, and her foundation of supportive wingmen. “The Air Force didn’t have to accept me, they had other more qualified applicants out there, but I’m still here,” Otto said, smiling. “I get to wear this uniform every day and there is power behind it that’s beyond me.”

Scintillators take second at StellarXplorers national finals

by Ken Robinson Kaiserslautern High School StellarXplorers Kaiserslautern High School sent two teams over spring break to the StellarXplorers national finals. The all-expense paid trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., featured the top 10 high school teams in the nation. KHS’ top team, the Scintillators, took second place while their counterpart, “Buckets of Coleslaw,” captured the fifth spot. The StellarXplorers competition is the premier space design competition. The program is designed to inspire and motivate high school students to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through a challenging, space system design competition. The competition is designed to not only explore the mechanics of space travel, but to allow students to truly practice their 21st century skills as they collaboratively solve realworld technical problems. Teams are provided with computer simulations for orbit determination and propagation, computer-aided system design, system performance assessment, and budgetary constraints. With nearly 20 pages of technical data, teams must be able to efficiently organize, analyze and evaluate mission data in order to make critical decisions concerning their mission. Teams have an eighthour block of time to make all the final decisions. For these teams, this is the ulti-

mate test where higher-order thinking skills are competing against both time and space. The Scintillators, in addition to the title of National Runner-ups, received a $2,000 scholarship for each of the participants, courtesy of the U.S. Air Force and United Launch Alliance. The Scintillator team was co-captained by senior Henry Hill (Chief Engineer) and sophomore Karina Sahli (Mission Manager). Rounding out the team are seniors Renee Sahli (Systems Engineer) and Bethany Salas (Project Analyst), with Flight Dynamics Engineer Justin Kockx (sophomore) overseeing the orbital projection and spacecraft altitude. The “Buckets of Coleslaw” team, who were just two points shy of 3rd place, was captained by senior Sam Donovan (Systems Engineer) and reinforced by seniors Vincent Povilaitis (Flight Dynamics Engineer) and Danielle Boyd (Mission Operations Manager). Rounding out the team was newcomer sophomore Tyler Palam (Mission Assurance Officer). These fortunate nine students from KHS received an education that most only dream of. These experiences shape, mold and more overly motivate students in ways that cannot be measured from a standardized test. Although the Raider teams did not walk away with the national title, their impressive second and fifth place finish and unique five-day education was well worth the price of their spring break.

Braised Lamb Shanks Ingredients (for 4 people)

About 1kg lamb shanks, off bone 1 cup diced carrots 1 cup diced parsley root 1 cup diced celery 1 cup diced onions 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 stalk thyme 1 teaspoon tomato paste ¼ cup red wine Salt and pepper to taste 45 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups tomato juice 2 cups beef broth

Preparation

Season lamb shank with salt pepper and

garlic. Put 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a Dutch oven. Slowly roast the lamb from all sides. Set aside. Put the rest of the oil in the Dutch oven and roast carrots, onions, celery and parsley root for 3-4 minutes on medium heat. Add tomato paste. Roast 2 more minutes. Add red wine and ¼ of tomato juice and broth. Let it reduce. Add a second quarter of tomato juice and broth. Add the stalk of thyme. Now put the lamb shank on top of the vegetables. Place in 160 degrees Celsius oven. Let the shanks roast for 2-2.5 hours. Add broth and tomato juice in ½ cup increments every 20 minutes. When all the liquid has been added, use a basting tool to continue to moisten the meat. You can also turn the meat to keep it from being too dry on one side. Take the lamb out of the Dutch oven and wrap it in aluminum foil and put it back in the warm, switched-off oven. Put the vegetables on the stove. Remove the thyme stalk. Make a sauce from the vegetables using a blender. Slice the lamb shank to plate. A nice side dish are green beans and potatoes Boulangeres or mashed potatoes.

Garrison environmental office, students hike Sembach nature trail Story and photos by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate What better way to learn about nature than to view it first hand? That’s exactly what 25 Sembach Middle School students did April 12 with the help of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Directorate of Public Works Environmental Office and local forest masters when the group hiked a nature trail to celebrate Earth Day. “It is essential to teach young people about the natural environment around us,” said Claudia Weber, an environmental engineer with DPW for 14 years. “Bringing them outside in the forest areas will help raise awareness for the animals, plants and insects that live there.” Many people think that recycling garbage is being environmentally conscious, but that is only a part of the issue, Weber said. “We recycle to save natural resources, which helps our environment. But what is our environment?” she asked. “Our intent is to give the children a basic understanding of our environment, and how they can preserve it.” Special guests Werner Zell and Joachim Kunz with the Otterberg Forest Agency both became forstmeisters because of their understanding and appreciation of nature. “I really enjoy teaching the children about the environment because they will educate our future generations about natural resources and sustainability,” said Zell, a forstmeister for 40 years. “We need to give children the understanding by teaching them from an early age the responsibility of respecting and taking care of our environment.” The sustainability of our forest ecosystems is vitally important, said Kunz, a 30-year forstmeister and a participant of the Forest Education Program since 2001. “The younger the children are, the better to learn and appreciate nature,” he said. “At this age, they have natural curiosity and have fun learning.” The children began their journey by playing a team-building “string ball” game, where they stated their names and favorite animals before using several strings to lift, carry and deposit a wooden ball onto a stick as a group. After performing the group event, they began their forest discovery hike learning about deer, birds, rabbits, hedgehogs and insect habitats along the way. For 10-year-old Lance, the Earth Day hike was exciting.

“This was really fun and interesting,” said the fourth grader, who said lions were his favorite animal. “The best part was seeing a deer antler up close.” The group also spied a real deer while hiking up and down the nature trail, which was challenging and fun, he said. “I like nature,” said fellow fourthgrader, Tatum. “I never went on a nature trail before, but I really like it,” said the 10-year-old, whose favorite animal is apple-head Chihuahuas. “Maybe I can explore it more in the summer with my family.” After the three-hour hike, the students received event certificates from USAG RP Deputy Garrison Commander Deborah Reynolds, who participated in Earth Day events with Sembach Middle School students for three years. “These children are our future generation, and therefore it’s vital they develop an appreciation for our planet and a desire to preserve it,” she said. “This was a fun and interesting way to learn important lessons about our environment outside of the classroom, and I’m glad I was a part of it.

Wolfstein sponsors culinary wine hike Sunday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The city of Wolfstein will offer its 5th annual culinary spring and wine hike Sunday. The hike leads along the 6-kilometer “Panoramaweg,” or panorama path, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We invite visitors to explore our wine hiking path and enjoy the wonderful blooming scenery at this time of the year,” said Herwart Dilly, mayor of Wolfstein. “Hikers will have a great view on Wolfstein, the Lauter Valley and onto the impressive Koenigsberg mountain massif.” Along the stroller-friendly hiking route, eight culinary stations will be put up. Hikers interested in tasting wines from different vintners, can buy a wine pass to include a wine glass with bracket for €8 at Info Point (Station No. 1) on the local Rathausplatz. With this wine pass, they can have their own

wine tasting event and get their glass filled for €2 at each station. The wine pass is the entrance ticket and helps to finance the diversified musical program. “Hikers can keep the glass as a nice souvenir and participate in a raffle with great prizes,” said Christoph Molter from the organizing event agency. “But visitors who do not drink wine, don’t need to buy the glass with that pass.” Culinary specialties include barbecue specialties, pulled lamb burgers, surf ‘n’ turf burgers, game specialties, Mediterranean red wine meat, salmon from the Finish Kota grill and grilled vegetables with honey-mustard dip, crepes, waffles and cakes. Children can have fun in the children’s paradise and have their faces painted at hiking station 1, where a Palatinate afternoon with live music will begin at 3 p.m. The band Simply Unplugged starts entertaining the audience at 5 p.m.

A decorated May wreath will be hoisted at 6 p.m. to welcome the following day, which is an official holiday, known as May Day or German Labor Day. The Rossbach sports club will then present dance performances. “I wish all guests a wonderful sunny hiking day and a lot of fun in our nice town,” said Dilly. Starting point of the hike is Rathausplatz in the center of Wolfstein. For the GPS, type in: Im Tauchental 3, 67752 Wolfstein. The town is located on B270, north of Kreimbach-Kaulbach. Residents off-base must watch homes, vehicles Sunday night Germans observe official holiday Monday

Residents living off base might experience some weird things happening in their neighborhood Sunday night. They must keep a watchful eye on their houses and vehicles since Germans observe “Hexennacht,” or Witches’ Night, April 30. Legend says that on the night of April 30, evil ghosts represented by cold weather, snow and darkness meet with witches and demons at Blocksberg hill in the Harz mountains. Here they get into mischief before they take off on broomsticks, pitchforks and billygoats at midnight. Today, it’s a custom for mainly children and teenagers to play tricks on neighbors. They ring doorbells and run off, put mustard on door handles, hide ﬂoor mats and trash cans, remove garden gates and wrap cars in toilet paper. Sometimes, older children or adults do destructive things like lifting drainage covers in the middle of the road or moving trafﬁc signs. Motorists are asked to be very careful at night or the following morning, because these actions create safety hazards and result in property damage. German Polizei will patrol the neighborhoods that night and take appropriate action if necessary. The origin of witches’ night goes back to Pagan times, when people believed that evil ghosts tried to prevent the

“Queen of Spring” from entering the country. Witches and demons were masters of people and things, so people did a lot to protect themselves. They hid billygoats and broomsticks so witches would not be able to ride on them through the night and do evil things. It was an unwritten law that children must not get beaten with a broomstick, because it could be a witch’s tool. Also, socks were put crossshaped on children’s beds, pentagrams were put over house entrances or sacred salt was scattered over the threshold. Residents used several herbs known to ban witches to smoke out houses and stables. Herbs included rue, St. John’s wort and juniper. Another German tradition observed at the beginning of May is to “dance into May.” Various associations and sports clubs sponsor “Tanz in den Mai” with live music in community halls, sports gyms, or other facilities that house dancing halls. Dances will be offered at 8 p.m. in Erfenbach’s community hall, Kreuzstein 8; and at 7 p.m. in Landstuhl’s Zehntenscheune, Kirchenstrasse 1. In several villages of the KMC, the May tree will be put up and May fest will be celebrated. Sometimes this ceremony is combined with a village fest. The May tree usually is a ﬁr with the lower branches stripped and only the treetop untouched. The pole is deco-

rated with colorful ribbons and craftsmen’s trade ornaments like sausages for the butchers, pretzels for the bakers, or carved wooden figures. May poles symbolize the beginning of spring and hope for a good harvest. Story and photos by Brittany Jones 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs The 21st Theater Sustainment Command said goodbye to Special Troops Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Caprissa S. Brown-Slade and Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Williams during a change-of-responsibility ceremony, April 13, at the Kleber Kaserne Gymnasium. Lt. Col. Jason Berdou and Command Sgt. Maj. Defarreo Poole assume command of the STB. Among the attendees for the ceremony were soldiers from the 21st TSC, family members and friends. Special guests included Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, 21st TSC Commanding General, and Command Sgt. Maj. Alberto Delgado, 21st TSC Senior Enlisted Advisor. “The only regret I have for this command team is that Command Sergeant Major Williams only took four days of leave during his time servicing command,” Gamble joked as he thanked the duo for its commitment and service. Brown-Slade and Williams served as the STB’s command team for two-

and-a-half years. During their time in command, the battalion helped spearhead the “Not in My Squad” initiative and supported various retention-related programs and projects. During Brown-Slade’s final words as acting STB Commander, she gave thanks to all members and soldiers involved in making the battalion a success. She also gave special thanks to Williams and noted how their partnership was referred to as “Thunder and Lightning” – illustrating the duo’s ability to effectively and powerfully handle challenges. Brown-Slade will head to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virgina, where she will serve as Deputy Commanding Officer of the 7th Transportation Brigade. Williams will be off to Camp Humphreys in South Korea, where he will serve as 8th Army’s G1 Sergeant Major. “A pledge to our NATO partners and to our gracious German Host: We promise to do our best to continue to foster and strengthen our alliance in the immediate community as well as across Europe as we move from assurance to deterrence,” said Berdou in his first speech as 21st TSC Special Troops Battalion Commander.

The American Red Cross will sponsor an hourlong Disney program called the Pillowcase Project for homeschoolers grades 3 to 5.
