Amy Glisson 86th Mission Support Group, commander When I found out I was going to be the Commander of the 86th Mission Support Group, I was beyond excited and knew I had landed my dream assignment. I had always wanted to lead a dynamic group in a challenging location, and really make a dif ference … then BAM! Welcome to Ramstein! Since arriving in June 2021, I have been in awe of our Mission Support Group and the tre mendous impact our mission sets have on Team Ramstein, the inge nuity and resiliency of our team mates, and just how special each and every one has been as I got to know all ~3,500 of us. This spring, I sat down with our leadership team and wanted to get after three priorities: Taking care of People, Customer Service, and Culture and Heritage. Together we decided to get after Culture and Heritage first, instilling pride in our teammates, our mission and our Air Force. Knowing that pride will carry into everything we do, we will Take care of People and provide the best Customer Service in the Air Force. To get started, we created a MSG Heritage Team. They worked hard to define, build, and brand what we SEE in YOU every day. Their efforts are on display and showcased in the design of our new 86 MSG patch. The focal point of the patch is the Greek Titan God, Atlas. Atlas was tasked with holding up the universe upon his shoulders. He is a warrior, just like our MSG team who is tasked to hold up all of Team Ramstein and the Global Gateway. The castle behind Atlas represents our physi cal footing here in Germany, while grounding us in the Air Force core values. The American and German flags illustrate unity with our host nation and coalition partner. The constellation of 7 stars represent the seven units in the MSG, and serves as a reminder that we are Stronger Together. The stars also mirror the European Union flag and capture the support we provide to NATO and other mission partners throughout Europe. The globe embodies our pres ence beyond Germany and Europe, as our influence and mission sets reach across, and into, every continent of the world. The three deltas represent the three wings we support in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. They also represent the three aircraft flown by the 86th Airlift Wing. Finally, the deltas remind us we have United States Space Force Guardians on our team. The V-shaped contrails nest us within the 86th Airlift Wing and their motto of “VIRTUS PERDURAT” which means Enduring Courage. Finally, the Polaris (North Star) between ΑΤΛΑΣ ΔΥΝΑΤΟΣ & ATLAS STRONG is the brightest star in the sky; it serves as our True North — a reminder to not only do things right, but to always do the right thing. An Airman assigned to the 1st Air and Space Communications Squadron discusses future scalability innova tions of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platforms at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 3. The 1st ACOS showcased a new mobile ISR platform and discussed its capabilities while also showing the current way of performing ISR duties.
A goal for the project was to develop a faster, lighter platform that could complete ISR operations with out compromising security. “After testing its capabilities, we can tell that signals going in and out were able to be blocked off by the pro tocols and the materials that we have,” said Airman 1st Class Marcus Greene, 1st ACOS cyber security technician. Robinson attributes the success of the demonstration to the team, and he stressed that their work doesn’t stop“1sthere.ACOS has put a lot of work into this,” Robinson said. “We’re looking forward to seeing this go from what it is now to the future and bringing more capabilities to the warfighter downrange cause at the end of the day, it’s helping us do our mission and keeping Airmen safe.”
The 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron held an internal demonstration with wing leadership for a newly developed prototype at Ramstein Air Base, on Aug. 3. The squadron showcased their new project to Col. Bryan Callahan, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing commander, and other staff members from U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air ForcesTheAfrica.prototype was designed to improve the way 1st ACOS accom plishes Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance operations. Twenty 1st ACOS Airmen and con tractors repurposed a vehicle with the technology and equipment needed to accomplish ISR duties on the go. Their goal was to prove that they could take their existing capabilities and mobilize them on a scale that hasn’t been accomplished yet. “In the past, for ISR, we have never put it on such a mobile plat form before,” said Staff Sgt. Justin Robinson, 1st ACOS unit deployment manager.Traditionally, Airmen would have to spend a great amount of time and energy forward deploying to a loca tion and setting up all the equipment needed to accomplish their duties. Their newly developed concept would alleviate some of that burden and introduce a new method of provid ing ISR in addition to their existing capabilities.“Itallows for quicker informa tion,” Robinson said. “We can just send a [vehicle] that’s ready-to-go out the door, instead of sending out a tent with a kit then waiting for teams to set it up so this gets information out to the warfighter at an increasing rate that we haven’t seen in the past.”

The data 1st ACOS transmits directly impacts USAFE leaders’ abil ity to make informed decisions in the “Wetheater.operate at the speed of need,” said Lt. Col. Phillip Alvarez, 1st ACOS commander. “Our Airmen are able to conduct ISR on the go already, but this new system is all about taking us from mobility to agility. As the the ater continues to rapidly evolve, we’re adapting to get data needed for com manders to be able to make decisions faster. What we’re trying to do here is innovate scalable solutions to feed the fight of tomorrow.”
The demonstration sought to show that the 1st ACOS could take their capabilities and mobilize them to meet the future needs of USAFE, prompting positive feedback from 435th AGOW leadership. “It’s exciting to see our Airmen developing solutions to the unique challenges we face in this theater,” said Callahan. “The AGOW is an elite wing, leading the way at the forward edge. Our 1st ACOS Airmen are no exception, and I’m pleased to see the innovative strides they’re taking to enable Agile Combat Employment in Europe.”

Austin visits US troops, meets with leaders in Latvia
Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III visited some of the 600 U.S. troops in Latvia and met with Latvian leaders to discuss ways to ensure the defense of an important NATO ally and to beef up deterrence against neighbor ingTheRussia.secretary and Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks met 1st Infantry Division troops in Lielvarde Air Base. “You are here for a purpose,” Austin told the U.S. and Latvian troops at the base. “That is to defend every [inch] of NATO territory.” He told the U.S. soldiers that they were the best ambassadors the U.S. has and urged them to get to know their Latvian allies. “Get out and get to know your Latvian partners that you may have to fight alongside,” he said. In a question-and-answer period, one soldier asked the sec retary if there wasn’t a way to increase realistic training with Latvian troops and other NATO forces in the nation to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin. The secretary told the troop that one reason he is in the country is to find ways to increase those trainingThereopportunities.willbemore U.S. forces in Latvia and other NATO allies on the alliance’s eastern flank. President Joe Biden announced the decision at the NATO Summit in Madrid. At that historic meet ing, Biden announced the deci sion to keep in place the sub stantial U.S. military forces that had surged to the region during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Part of that decision was to deploy a brigade combat team headquarters in Romania with units further deployed to the Baltic Republics. The president called for “a persistent heel-totoe rotational presence in all three Baltic countries to reinforce the combat-credible capabilities of the alliance, in general, and the United States in particular,” said a senior defense official trav eling with the secretary. One of the advantages of having brigade combat teams headquartered in Europe will be the ability of the United States and NATO allies to do consistent training together, which keeps American forces in Europe ready, the official continued. “What’s even better, it enhances interop erability and the readiness of our NATO allies.” The secretary will meet Latvian leaders in the capital city of Riga and thank them for their contributions to the defense of Ukraine. U.S. Air Force’s F-22 Raptor has arrived to the 32nd Tactical Air Base, Łask, Poland, to support NATO Air Shielding. The aircraft are from the 90th Fighter Squadron, 3rd Wing, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, and will be supporting Air Shielding as the 90th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron.

The Raptor has made vital contributions to the U.S.’s peacekeeping efforts around the world by deterring potential adversaries and enhancing lethality against all advanced air threats. It provides NATO a more permanent deterrence option through Air Shielding and ensures the stability and security of NATO’s airspace.“The Air Force has relied on F-22 deployments to improve combined tactical air operations, enhance interoperability of forces and deter potential threats for the past 15 years,” said Lt. Col. Michael Kendall, 90th EFS commander. “Raptor capabilities allow us to provide air superi ority and dominance, rapidly and at great distances. We came here to enhance NATO’s posture and increase warfighting capabili ties along the Eastern Flank in support of our Allies and partners.”
The NATO Air Shielding mission is an enhanced posture that integrates Allied Air and Surface Based Air and Missile Defense and offers rapidly deployable options from the Baltic to the Black seas. However, this mission retains the flexibility to address any emerging threat in the region. The F-22 will also support Agile Combat Employment operations and exercises throughout the region to validate new ways to deploy and maneuver assets during a crisis or conflict to operate in contested environments. The F-22 has the ability to fluidly move across the theater to seize, retain, and exploit an adversary, ultimately presenting layers of operational unpredict ability to an adversary’s strategic decision making.“The F-22 ensures a lethality that no other aircraft can provide,” said Kendall. “We are unwavering in our commitment to extended deterrence and ready to go when ever they need us.”

Allied Air Forces support emergency services in fighting wild fires Air Command Allied air forces and armed forces
Climate change has created nat ural disasters in countries world wide from floods to catastrophic wild fires. This year, again, many Allied countries have been devas tated by wildfires in the last few weeks. We witnessed forest fires e.g. in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, Turkey, the United States and Canada. However, climate change affects not only the southern countries, but also hits in the north like the Czech Republic and Germany. As the affected nations are mus tering all their civilian emergency services to fight fires around the globe, the military makes avail able their unique equipment both on the ground and in the air to support the national firefighting efforts. Using planes and helicop ters allows the firefighting crews to respond quicker in hard to reach areas with extinguishing material, which otherwise would take longer with traditional firetrucks. The mission of Allied Air Command is to collectively support enduring operational deployments under national and Alliance securi ty, and — at the moment specifical ly — NATO’s air shielding posture along the eastern flank. “The Allied air forces — togeth er with the civilian and military emergency services — are doing their best to help protect the popu lations put in danger by the wide spread fires that have been impact ing virtually all countries over the last weeks,” said Lieutenant Colonel Panagiotis Filis a career pilot of CL-215 firefighting aircraft with the Hellenic Air Force and now a mem ber of Allied Air Command. “Aerial firefighting missions are among the most complex in aviation, as crews have to deal with the four classic elements of water, earth, fire and air. We are grateful that you help keep us all safe,” he added. Allies help each other with their specially adapted aircraft, whether it is concerted firefighting action or one nation helping put out fires in another. Kearns has been in the unit for only one week and has already learned a lot from her new family within the 16th Sustainment Brigade. “I’m so new, it’s personal pride to see my growth learning on the job with these amazing Soldiers,” said Kearns. “I never knew I’d learn so much from my Soldiers and I’m so proud of them. They’ve been phenom enal.”Outside of the larg est onward movement mis sion conducted at this port in Antwerp-Brugge, in her single week within this job, she’s con ducted one port operation and one commercial line haul. Kearns loves her job in the Army and has future plans of attending medical school once her contract is complete.

Marshall Mains is a transportation management coordinator assigned to the 260th Movement Control Team, 39th Transportation Battalion and is working within the larg est onward movement operation at the port of Antwerp-Brugge in 21st Theater Sustainment Command history. This is the first leadership opportunity during a port operation within the U.S. Army, and he will be moving 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division’s equipment within Europe by rail, barge and commercial line haul. “I am proud to take more of a leadership role this year,” said Mains. “I can anticipate where problems could occur, adapt and overcome and take ownership for my part of the mission.” Mains is in charge of account ing for every piece of equipment that comes off the vessel. His team is comprised of three Soldiers and they will be confirming and doc umenting over 3,000 pieces of equipment.Mainshas just over two years left in the Army. He looks for ward to applying for the Naval Expeditionary Warfare internship and seek a new path back in his home state of California within the Engineering field.

“Finding him like that, I just did what anyone would do and took care of my best friend,” said Pfc. Jason Hernandez a fire con trol specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 75th Field Artillery Brigade. “I was pretty scared, but I believe in putting people first, so that’s what I did.”
After duty hours that Monday, Hernandez decided to check in on his friend and teammate. When he found him, he realized the Soldier was in the middle of a life-threat ening mental health crisis. He immediately acted by notifying the chain of command and transport ing the Soldier to a local hospital. “[Hernandez] easily could have called it a night and went to sleep,” said Capt. Phillip Herold, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery commander. “He did what we ask all Soldiers to do and look out for each other. He didn’t wait; he didn’t hesitate. He came up with a plan and took the right actions that saved a Soldier’s life.” Hernandez stayed with the Soldier for more than 14 hours and after leaving the emergency room, he continued to assist the Soldier, who was later moved to another facility.“This is a prime example of intervention and ‘People First,’” said Col. David Norris, 75th Field Artillery Brigade commander. “Hernandez’s tactical expertise and dedication to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the ‘Diamond Brigade.’”

4. Vision screenings
Your child’s mental health is also important. It’s something that you can bring up with their doctor, especially if you have questions or concerns. TRICARE covers medi cally and psychologically necessary mental health services for families during times of stress, depression, grief, and anxiety. If care is needed, keep in mind, you don’t need a referral or pre-authorization for most outpatient mental health care. This includes services like therapy and counseling. While you’re scheduling appointments for your child, don’t forget about preventive screenings for yourself or other family mem bers. Check the Getting Preventive Care page to learn how to get care under your TRICARE health plan. Your whole family can use this time to stay on top of their health.
1. Routine health screenings and physicals Get a health checkup for your children while they’re still on vaca tion. As a result, your doctor can con firm they’re healthy and illness-free before they rejoin their classmates. Also, some schools require a physi cal for enrollment. TRICARE cov ers physicals when they’re required for school enrollment. This doesn’t include sports physicals, which are separate. TRICARE doesn’t cover annual sports physicals. For younger children, TRICARE covers well-child exams from birth until age 6.

5. Mental health check
A simple eye exam can show if a child is having any vision issues and ensure that their eyes are healthy overall. You can get routine eye exams, depending on your beneficiary status, your health plan, and your age. Children of active duty service members can get annual eye exams. Children of retired service members with TRICARE Prime can get routine eye exams every two years. If your child has vision coverage through FEDVIP, follow the rules of that plan.

Five health care checkups for your child before school starts by TRICARE Communications Summer isn’t quite over yet, but it’s almost back-to-school sea son. For parents, this means that it’s time to make a list of all the things your child needs for the new school year. As you begin to shop for new notebooks, pencils, bind ers, and clothes, don’t forget your child’s school-related health check list. Now is the time to schedule appointments and beat the rush, as health care providers are usu ally busy just before the school year begins. TRICARE provides sev eral clinical preventive services for children.“Acheckup with the doctor is a chance for children to get a thorough physical exam that also addresses any emotional, develop mental, or any other questions and concerns that parents may have,” said Dr. Stacy Usher, lead nurse consultant of Clinical Oversight and Integration for the TRICARE Health Plan, Defense Health Agency. “TRICARE covers many preventive health services with no out-of-pocket costs for families.” Follow this checklist for your child’s back-to-school health care needs.
2. Immunizations This is a great time for your children to catch up on routine immunizations. Their doctor will review their immunization records and confirm that they’re up to date and meet the school’s requirements. You can get covered vaccines from any TRICARE-authorized provider at no cost. But you may have to pay copayments or cost-shares for the office visit or for other services received during the same visit. Keep in mind, you can also get some cov ered vaccines at no cost at TRICARE retail network pharmacies. Did you know that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends COVID-19 vac cines for everyone 6 months and older and boosters for everyone 5 years and older, if eligible? Use the CDC’s COVID-19 booster tool to learn if and when your child or teen can get boosters to stay up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.
3. Dental checkups and cleanings When was the last time your child saw the dentist? Scheduling a den tal cleaning will allow your child’s dentist to look for potential prob lems before they get worse. If you can schedule appointment in the summer, it’ll ensure that your child doesn’t need to miss a day of school because of a dental appointment. TRICARE offers dental coverage to active duty family members (includ ing National Guard and Reserve fam ily members) through the TRICARE Dental Program. According to the TRICARE Dental Program Handbook, TDP covers two routine cleanings and two fluoride treatments during a con secutive 12-month period for chil dren ages 1 and older. You can enroll your children in TDP at any time. If your child has dental coverage through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program, follow the rules of that plan.

In sports, there are the athletes. Then there are the supporting positions such as the coach, general manager, team president, sports writers and so on.
Harry Glickman Harry Glickman left college in 1942 to enlist in the Army. He served with the 12th Armored Division in Europe until 1945. Glickman was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valor in combat. In 1970, he founded the Portland Trail Blazers, a National Basketball Association team, and became the team’s general manager until his retirement in 1994. In 1977, his team won the NBA championship. Bill Gildea Bill Gildea was a sports columnist and sports edi tor for the Washington Post newspaper from 1965 to 2005. He also authored several books that were sports related.Gildea served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

The military analogy to team effort often is expressed this way: In the Army and Marine Corps, not everyone can be an infantryman or in the com bat arms. Support people such as engineers and logisticians are also needed to make a winning team. Similarly in the Air Force and Navy, not everyone can be a fighter pilot. Mechanics and administrative per sonnel are necessary for the success of the team. Five people who served in the military and who played supporting roles in sports are featured here.
Howard Cosell Howard Cosell was a prominent sports commenta tor. He’s best known for covering heavyweight boxing matches in the 1960s and 70s that included fighters such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Ken Norton and George Foreman. He’s also known as one of the first commentators to add “color” to Monday NightDuringFootball.World War II, Cosell served in the Army Transportation Corps from 1942 to 1945 and was hon orably discharged with the rank of major.
Earl Hutto Earl Hutto served in the Navy during and after World War II from 1944 to 1946. He worked as sports director at WEAR-TV in Pensacola, Florida, from 1954 to 1961, WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Alabama, from 1961 to 1963, and WJHGTV in Panama City, Florida, from 1961 to 1973. Hutto also represented Florida in the House of Representatives from 1972 to 1995.
Gene Budig Gene Budig was president of Major League Baseball’s American League from 1994 to 1999. In 1999, the AL and the National League were abolished, so Budig was the last AL president. Budig also served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Nebraska Air National Guard in 1992 with the rank of major general.

American Military Cemetery The American Military Cemetery, which is 50.5 acres (20.4 ha) contains the remains of 5,076 American service mem bers. On 22 occasions two broth ers rest side-by-side in adjacent graves. Most of the interred died during the Battle of the Bulge which was fought nearby in win ter 1944/1945. The 5,076 head stones are set in 9 plots of fine grass, lettered A to I. Separating the plots are two malls radi ating from the memorial and two transverse paths. Two flag poles overlook the graves area. Situated between the two flag poles lies the grave of General George S. Patton Jr. Not far from the cemetery entrance stands the white stone chapel, set on a wide circular platform surrounded by woods. It is embellished with sculpture in bronze and stone, a stainedglass window with the insignia of the five major U.S. commands that operated in the region, and a mosaic ceiling. The cemetery is located in Hamm, Luxembourg City, so is easy to find and visit to pay your respects. It is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Under a U.S.Luxembourg treaty signed in 1951 the U.S. government was granted free use in perpetuity of the land covered by the cemetery.
