Bus, road safety key to safe school year Head Up, Phone Down In the last 20 years, the death rate for kids of all ages declined more than 50 percent, according to the National Safety Council; however, there has been a large demographic shift with children from ages 5 to 9 to teenagers being the most likely to be struck by a vehicle. Safe Kids Worldwide stated one in five high school students and one in eight middle school students cross

the street while distracted. With the increased use of handheld devices, distracted walking has become a problem, escalating the chance of being struck by a vehicle. Teach one another to stay attentive to your surroundings. Keep your head up and phone down. The following are SafeKids. org year-around safety tips to eliminate distracted walking: • Never walk while texting or talking on the phone • If texting, move out of the

way of others and stop on the sidewalk Never cross the street while using an electronic device Do not walk with headphones on Be aware of the surroundings Always walk on the sidewalk if one is available. If a child must walk on the street, he or she should face oncoming traffic Look left, right, then left again before crossing the street Cross only at crosswalks

Safety tips for children • Be on time. Walk, do not run, to the bus stop • When waiting for the bus, take at least three large steps away from the curb • Take your seat on the bus and stay in it while the bus is moving. If there are seat belts, buckle up • When getting off the bus, take three large steps away from the curb and wait for the bus to depart before crossing the street • Never cross the street in front of or behind the bus Also, active escorting by responsible caregivers helps promote safety and security.

Safety tips for parents • Ensure children know and use the safest route possible to and from the bus stop • Teach children how to use crosswalks, pedestrian crossings and traffic lights • Dress children with bright clothing, easily visible to motorists • Teach children to stand on the sidewalk and wait for the bus to depart before attempting to cross the street • Talk with children about their behavior when riding in a car and on a school bus

NEWS

The school year is approaching, and the 86th Airlift Wing Safety office wants to remind Kaiserslautern Military Com-munity members to advise children on safety concerns during their commute to school. From parents to top-tier leadership, student safety is a priority. “Every school year U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity-Europe places safety and security in the highest regard for its students and staff,” said Bill Heiges, DODEAEurope safety and security officer. “Coordination takes place from (all levels) to ensure all efforts are focused on providing a safe and secure environment for students to learn and achieve success.” Achieving a safe commute to school starts with educating children on precautions to take. Staff Sgt. Dave Looby, 86th AW Safety occupational safety craftsman, said conversations about safety have to start at home. “Give your child the tools to be safe on the road,” Looby said. “It’s important to know the hazards that are associated with traveling on the road (in order to) prevent future mishaps.” The 86 AW Safety office has important safety reminders for the KMC before the school year begins.

Children Accident and Injury Prevention In Europe, the traffic does not stop for loading and unloading school buses. Teach your children a lifesaving rule: Never cross the street in front of or behind the bus. In addition to that, look both ways before crossing. According to SafeKids. org, children are most often hit by cars during the hours before and after school, with a peak in September.

JSOAC commander recognizes Ramstein Airmen for aircraft recovery

Airmen talk after a coin ceremony Aug. 10, 2016, on Ramstein Air Base. Master Sgt. James McConaghay, U.S. Air Forces in Europe directorate contingency manager, Tech Sgt. David Hobeck, 86th Maintenance Squadron unit deployment manager, Tech Sgt. Austin Schierberg, 86th MXS repair and reclamation craftsman, Staff Sgt. Cory Garland, 86th MXS repair and reclamation journeyman and Staff Sgt. Geoffrey Brew, 86th MXS UDM, were recognized for successful completion of an aircraft recovery mission.

Col. Robert Orris, Joint Special Operations Air Component commander-Africa, coined Ramstein Airmen for completing a recent aircraft crash recovery mission, Aug. 10. Five 86th Airlift Wing Airmen collaborated with battlefield Airmen, Navy seabees, Army and Air Force special forces and local nationals on a short-notice mission to recover a C-146A Wolfhound after the right main landing gear became stuck in a remote location’s soft sand. Master Sgt. James McConaghay, U.S. Air Forces in Europe directorate contingency manager, Tech Sgt. David Hobeck, 86th Maintenance Squadron unit deployment manager, Tech Sgt. Austin Schierberg, 86th MXS repair and reclamation craftsman, Staff Sgt.

Cory Garland, 86th MXS repair and reclamation journeyman and Staff Sgt. Geoffrey Brew, 86th MXS UDM were the five Airmen recognized. Their efforts in communicating between joint forces, equipping for the mission and completing a significant short notice tasking led to Orris commending the Airmen on a job well done. “The speed you (completed the mission) was remarkable to us,” Orris said. “It was truly a joint and combined effort.” According to Orris, a wide variety of Airmen and individuals played a role in assisting with the aircraft retrieval. Schierberg and Garland led the ground team as the Crash Disabled Damage Aircraft Recovery team dispatched. “The location’s terrain was very

difficult (to work with),” Garland said. “Working with (limited equipment) was definitely challenging”. “We were limited to what we could bring and we had to make do with what we had.” Although their CDDAR course supplied Garland and Schierberg with the knowledge to make repairs in similar situations, the isolated location’s few resources required them to take their skills to a completely different level. “The beginning was the most challenging,” Schierberg said. “Every time we would dig, more (sand) would fall in the hole. It was hard to compact it and keep it at bay. It was kind of deterring. We’d dig and dig, then the aircraft would shift. It felt like we were going nowhere.” The burning heat and inclement weather also proved difficult, but the Airmen persevered. “It rained on us one of our nights

and set us back a little bit. We were able to bounce back from (the setback) and surprisingly the day after it rained (was) our most successful day.” The success was shared by some towing help from local nationals. “One of the locals had a three-axle truck,” Schierberg said. “It was monstrous. It was probably bigger than the aircraft. We hooked it up with some tow slings and pulled (the aircraft) out like a champ. It came out exactly like we wanted it to.” Schierberg said the recovery went excellently. In the end, by utilizing their training capabilities the team’s effort led to a fully operational aircraft. “I’m glad I had the opportunity to be a part of the actual mission and (gain) first-hand experience,” Garland said. “It was really cool experience, and I definitely learned a lot.”

Team Ramstein honors families of deployed Airmen By Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Ramstein Enlisted Spouses’ Association and Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted a party for family members of deployed Airmen Aug. 12 at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The party provided a variety of games to play and food to eat at the Ramstein Aquatic Center. Michele Dresel, 86th Force Support Squadron AFRC director, believes the party brought the Kaiserslautern Military Community members attendees closer. “One of our goals with events like these is to encourage people to meet new individuals and make friends. We like to think about what people grew up with that would bring out a sense of community,” Dresel said. “A lot of people may never connect with their environment enough, especially out here in Europe.” Every month, the AFRC hosts events to bring the community together. They range from movie nights to outdoor events and intend to bring deployed Airmen’s families together for a supportive environment. The event also provided backpacks for families getting ready for the new school year. “When one spouse is deployed, and the other is left to take care of the kids, sometimes there’s a lot to

435 CTS trains Lithuanians with MAAS by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Cadre from the 435th Construction and Training Squadron trained Airmen from the U.S. and Lithuania on using the Mobile Aircraft Arresting System July 20 on Ramstein. These students attended the training to bolster allied partnership capabilities and ensure they return to their home station with a wealth of knowledge they couldn’t obtain elsewhere. The MAAS is a contingency airfield asset that allows for the safe retrieval of tail hook aircraft during an in-flight emergency. It is air-portable and can be installed in a variety of methods and on practically any surface type to provide coverage in a variety of scenarios. According to Tech. Sgt. Ryan Robart, 435 CTS NCO in charge of power production contingency training, the training can benefit more than just Lithuania. “After the training and certification, the Airmen will have all the knowledge and skills necessary to install the MAAS in a deployed location,” Robart said. “As a NATO partner, the Lithuanian military helps support other NATO allies in certain situations. 13 FIS fights crime, protects Air Force assets Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

When hearing the word “special agent,” a stereotypical sleuth might come to mind: a man sporting a trench coat while holding a magnifying glass in one hand and a tobacco pipe in the other. Although this stereotype might not fit Air Force Office of Special Investigations agents, one thing is for certain: they have sworn to enforce the law, and they will do what it takes to bring criminals to justice. “If an Air Force organization is ridden with crime, it cannot properly do its job,” said Lt. Col. Neil Whelden, 13th Field Investigations Squadron commander. “The commitment of the people who work here to fight crime is second to none.” The 13th FIS is one of many AFOSI units, and it services Air Force interests in the entire Kaiserslautern Military Community. “I am extremely optimistic about this unit,” Whelden said. “I serve with great people with an excellent work ethic. For this reason, I feel blessed. Our job here keeps us busy. No two days are the same, and there’s never a dull moment.” There are three different categories in which 13th FIS agents operate: criminal investigation, anti-fraud and counterintelligence. Criminal investigation deals with homicide, domestic and drug abuse, felonies and other crimes. Anti-fraud is the financial protection aspect of Air Force operations. Agents track the money of the Air Force to ensure it goes to its proper recipients and is used for proper purposes. Counter-intelligence is the information protection arm of AFOSI, where agents are responsible for making sure the U.S. government’s adversaries do not gain any information which would give them a window into the Air Force’s operations. “We investigate anything that may do harm to the U.S. Air Force, this base or the personnel here,” said Special Agent Rudy, 13th FIS. “If someone is spying against the U.S. military, our job is to investigate that person.” Whether as simple as briefing an Airman going on vacation to a foreign country or engaging in a psychological chess match with enemy operatives to prevent them from accessing important information, counter-intelligence agents work hard to protect the warfighting capabilities of the Air Force. Being an AFOSI agent is not easy; the risks and hazards that come with the job of law enforcement are real. An agent may be exposed to a crime scene’s chemical or biological hazards

Air Force Office of Special Investigation 13th Field Investigations Squadron agents demonstrate a DNA sample search on a towel Aug. 11, 2016, at Ramstein Air Base. There are three fields of operations at the AFOSI: criminal investigation, fraud investigation and counter-intelligence investigation.

or face a disgruntled suspect looking to harm them. Therefore, practicing situational awareness, risk management and operations security is a must for AFOSI agents. “The threats are broad, especially on deployment,” Whelden said. “We go outside the wire on a regular basis.” Despite these threats, serving in the AFOSI has its rewards. “Doing this job made me realize that there’s more to just the Air Force itself: it’s keeping the people safe,” Rudy said. “That’s what keeps me going every day; it’s a very rewarding career.” For an enlisted Air Force member to become an AFOSI agent, a per-

son must undergo a rigorous selection process, which includes an extensive background check, interviews, financial checks and a medical clearance. Upon passing all the requirements, the Airmen are sent to a 20-week training course. “Our primary focus is in the staff sergeant corps (for enlisted applicants),” said special agent Rosa, 13th FIS. “You usually have to be either a staff sergeant or a staff sergeant select. We rarely hire senior airmen unless they’re very sharp.” Rosa explained that not everyone can handle the job of an AFOSI agent, and those who wish to join must be ready to deal with the dark side of the career.

“It’s challenging,” Rosa said, “At times, it’s scary, and it’s definitely dangerous.” However, Rosa believes the work AFOSI agents do is necessary. “The intelligence we get is saving lives,” Rosa said. “In the end, when you see the results and impact, it is definitely very humbling … and very rewarding.” Although the nature of crime can be unforgiving, the 13th FIS Airmen are determined to catch the perpetrators and serve justice, Whelden said. No matter how hard the case may be to crack, the Airmen of the 13th FIS are committed to serving and protecting Air Force interests in the KMC.

This additional primary care capacity provides significant access to our Space-Available patients in the greater KMC area for care that includes routine wellness exams, health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, and referrals for access to specialty consultation. The Enhanced Access Clinic offers primary care to Space-A patients in the following Medical Service Account/ Pay Patient categories: Air Force, Army and Navy civilians; DODDS employees; NAF employees; U.S. contract employees; authorized foreign military members/civilians; and command sponsored family members of any of the above. For more information, call DSN 590-5202/Commercial 063719464-5202 or visited the Enhanced Access Clinic website at http://rhce. amedd.army.mil/landstuhl/services. cfm?MTFinfo_id=902 Specialty Care Services Did you know that high quality specialty care services are available at LRMC on a Space-Available basis? Many specialty services are open to retirees, DOD civilians, contractors, DODDS teachers and their family members, as well as active duty servicemembers and their families. Beginning last March, LRMC began offering a monthly availability report

on its public website at http://rhce. amedd.army.mil/landstuhl/services. cfm?MTFinfo_id=895 where you can go to for updates on what specific specialty care services are available. For more information, please contact the Managed Care Office at the TRICARE Service Center (Bldg 3744) at DSN 590-6443/Commercial 063719464-6443 or visit in person at Bldg. 3744 near the AAFES Gas Station on Mondays through Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. LRMC has made great strides to make your specialty care appointment happen as fast as possible. As of January, LRMC has reduced the time it takes to be contacted for a specialty appointment to only 72 hours after your Primary Care Manager refers you to see a specialist. Please take advantage of these appointments available to you and make LRMC your first choice for specialty care! Robot Assisted Surgery Beginning last October, LRMC began using the da Vinci Surgical System, a robotic system controlled by surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgeries. It can be used by multiple disciplines for operations on the digestive tract, kidneys, bladder and reproductive organs. This minimally invasive and precise surgical procedure can speed up recovery time thanks in part to smaller, precise movements inside the patient’s body that can help reduce blood loss from up to one liter to one tenth that amount for procedures such as prostate surgery. One of the first patients to receive their surgery with da Vinci at LRMC was sent home the same day and was well on her way to recovery within days of her gallbladder surgery. “(The day after the surgery) I was up and moving around all on my own, in very little pain,” the patient said. “I wouldn’t even really call it pain; it feels more

like I had a very intensive ab workout.” Physical Medicine & Rehabilitative Services Physical Medicine & Rehabilitative (PM&R) Services treats patients for a variety of muscle, tendon, joint and nerve disorders using a patient-centered focus on improving your quality of life. PM&R is staffed with specialists with a broad spectrum of training, including pain management, orthopedics, neurology, rheumatology, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, and provide state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment methods to not only reduce pain but also to increase function. In addition, PM&R also offers chiropractic services for active duty Service Members from all branches of the military. PM&R is also leading the way by developing Pediatric Concussion Guidelines for Regional Health Command Europe, which for the first time will provide comprehensive evaluation and triage guidelines for children with minor head trauma. Please see your Primary Care Provider for a consult to our clinic. TBI & Rehabilitation Program Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) has been referred to as the signature wound for injuries sustained in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, Traumatic Brain Injuries, more commonly known as a concussion, account for approximately 2.4 million trips to the Emergency Room each year for injuries sustained from routine activities around the house, spills on the playground or falls while biking or skating. The TBI Clinic offers evaluation, assessment, treatment and follow-up services for Servicemembers, beneficiaries and retirees who have sustained a TBI and have ongoing symptoms. Treating more than 1,300 appointments per month, the TBI Clinic helps patients address sleep difficulties, chronic pain, mood disorders and cognitive issues. You can contact the TBI Clinic at

DSN 590-5601/Commercial 063719464-5601. Anesthesia Interventional Pain Management Clinic Offered to Everyone Pain is a complicated, often debilitating medical problem that can have a major impact on your physical and mental well-being. The Anesthesia Interventional Pain Management Clinic, also known as the Pain Clinic, offers a comprehensive range of services for patients suffering from chronic pain. Our team of pain medicine specialists provides advanced treatment options for various chronic pain syndromes in a supportive, compassionate environment. They have successfully helped patients return to independence and comfort and have restored their quality of life. The clinic offers innovative techniques such as nerve blocks; Battlefield Acupuncture, which consists of small studs placed on the earlobe and around the ear; as well as traditional acupuncture. The clinic is also leading the way in research with the Stellate Ganglion Block for PTSD Study that began this month. LRMC is teaming with other Army medical centers on a research study to evaluate the effect of treating PTSD by injecting a local anesthetic into a group of nerve cells and nerves in the neck. For more information, call DSN 590-7522/ Commercial 06371-9464-7522. TeleHealth Wouldn’t it be great if you could just Skype with a LRMC specialist instead of making a four-hour drive from places such as Vilseck? LRMC is helping to make that happen with TeleHealth. TeleHealth is paving the way for the future of military medicine in Europe by bridging geographical distances between patients and specialty care providers, increasing patient access to care, and supporting mission readiness. This innovative approach to military medicine allows

August 26, 2016 more than 30 specialty care providers at LRMC to cross commands, countries, and continents to provide highquality, patient-centered care to beneficiaries residing in or deployed to Europe by using video-teleconferencing technology and advanced medical devices that allow LRMC providers to listen in realtime to patient heart and lung sounds. Those unneeded fourhour trips have added up. To date, LRMC TeleHealth has saved more than 2,300 work and school days, 1.5 million dollars in travel costs, and more than 900,000 kilometers. In recognition for its accomplishments, LRMC TeleHealth received the Wolf Pack Award in March from U.S. Army Medical Command, which “recognizes and celebrates successes of teams throughout Army Medicine, and highlights teamwork that drives excellence.” Specifically, LRMC TeleHealth was lauded for accomplishing 2,658 TeleHealth visits in a 12-month period, marking a 160 percent increase from the previous year. Combining Forces The Pain Clinic, TBI Clinic, TeleHealth, Physical Medicine and Neurology have combined forces to offer more comprehensive care. Doctors from Physical Medicine and the Pain Clinic travel each month from LRMC to the Vicenza Army Health Clinic to provide direct care, and follow up with their patients via Virtual Health. Physical Medicine provides the same service at the Vilseck Army Health Clinic. In addition, Physical Medicine, TBI and Neurology now work in unison to form the Department of Neurorehabilitation for more effective treatment for medical conditions with overlapping problems. Evolution Program The Evolution Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program for Post-Traumatic Stress at LRMC is the only one of its kind in the European theater. Evolution is an evidence-based, eightweek therapeutic program designed to help Service Members from all branches deal with the lasting effects of

traumatic events. Evolution can be contacted at DSN 5906302/Commercial 063719464-6302 or 24/7 at usarmy. lrmc.evolution@mail.mil Patient Transfer Center Whether you are in Paris or Pirmasens, the LRMC Patient Transfer Center can assist 24/7 with inpatients transfers to LRMC, determining whether LRMC has capabilities and capacity to accept the patient, and facilitating communication between LRMC providers and Host Nation medical facilities. When you call for help, your primary POC will be a bilingual Nurse Case Manager who will gather clinical info, coordinate air/ground evacuation and communicate with necessary LRMC personnel. For more information, contact the Patient Transfer Center for more information at DSN 590-5075/Commercial 06371-9464-5075. New Patient Survey LRMC outpatients began seeing a new satisfaction survey sent to them this summer, but the new survey’s impact remains the same – changes and improvements happen as a direct result from patient feedback. The Joint Outpatient Experience Survey (JOES) replaced the Army Provider Level Satisfaction Survey (APLSS) used by the Army, as well as outpatient surveys used by the Air Force and Navy. In areas such as the Kaiserslautern Military Community where a patient can be seen by an Air Force and/or Army provider for the same medical condition, JOES will provide a standardized customer service questionnaire regardless of the branch of service where the care was provided. Patient satisfaction surveys lead to noticeable improvements for patients. Through feedback provided from patient satisfaction surveys, LRMC was able to establish Wi-Fi in patient waiting rooms at the Emergency Department and Pharmacy, purchase new equipment for accelerated scheduling of mammograms and MRIs, and enhance the dining experience through a la carte menus for inpatients.

86 VRS hosts car show The 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron hosted the 10th annual VRS Auto Show Aug. 20, in the Ramstein Enlisted Club parking lot, at Ramstein Air Base. Approximately 180 participants from around the Kaiserslautern Military Community and Europe gathered to showcase their vehicles in hopes of winning a trophy. “(Besides Department of Defense members) we have people from Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and France here, as well as Germans from the local area,” said Staff Sgt. Jonathan Garrett, 86th VRS vehicle mechanic. “(This event) is open to anyone; they just have to go through the proper channels in order to get on base.” Garrett said he was pleased to see the results of his hard work in coordinating the event, even with the bad weather that rolled in over it. “It’s very tiresome.” Garrett said. “But it’s very rewarding when we start seeing all the cars show up. As long as I see the cars out there and people are staying even with the bad weather, they know it’s a good event.” Contestants’ vehicles were judged based on several factors: appearance, physical condition, additional work on the engine and accessories added to the vehicle.

“Anything added to the vehicle after stock is worth extra points,” Garrett said. Winners received trophies in several different categories, which included the best Asian-made car, best American-made car, best European-made car, best truck and best classic car. Participants also received awards based on the most horsepower and loudest muffler. Patrick Sliwinski, a participant from France, won the Best Overall award. Sliwinski said coming all the way to Ramstein was well worth his time. “It’s wonderful,” Sliwinski said. “I did not (waste) my time coming; I love to meet the people (and) to look at the other cars. “It was perfect,” Sliwinski added. “Very nice people, very nice place; I was very welcome.” Garrett believes the event was a success due to the large variety of participants and volunteers. “We have more volunteers from outside our squadron than ever before, and we have more cars than ever before,” Garrett said. “Overall, even with the stress, it was a very good event. “Usually the local nationals make up about half of our vehicles as it is,” Garrett continued. “We really love our local nationals and hope we can get them involved again next year.” Although the participants at the auto show were from different countries, they found a common bond in their love for cars.

EOD Soldiers have a blast during visit from 21st TSC Command Team

Soldiers from the 702nd Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) pose with the 21st Theater Sustainment Command Team, Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, and Command Sgt. Maj. Alberto Delgado in their EOD bomb suits Aug. 11.

By Sgt. 1st Class Kyle Theres 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — Soldiers from the 702nd Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) did a bang up job during a visit from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command Team Aug. 11 at the company compound detonation area. Soldiers from the 702nd demonstrated the capabilities of several EOD systems to Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble and Command Sgt. Maj. Alberto Delgado. The demonstration included robotics platforms, EOD bomb suit, electronic counter measure systems, and mine detection equipment. “EOD Soldiers train with these items daily to develop and maintain proficiency,” said 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Sims. “Having them able to demonstrate their knowledge to Maj. Gen. Gamble and Command Sgt. Maj. Delgado is an opportunity to build confidence in the Soldiers and good training.” The ordnance company Soldiers are responsible for locating, identifying, evaluating, rendering safe, recover-

ing, and determining the final disposition of all explosive items, including chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear ordnance, improvised explosive devices, unexploded ordnance, and previously unknown ordnance throughout United States Army Garrison Bavaria. Additionally, EOD teams spend countless hours training with their equipment to ensure proficiency. Every new team member must pass certification processes that test their knowledge of every tool and piece of equipment. “It’s rewarding to see the 21st TSC command show genuine interest in what we do on a daily basis,” said Spc. Michael Epshtein, an EOD Team Member. “Having the opportunity to show them our procedures and observing them in our bomb suits was a great experience. “The experience emphasized to all of the Soldiers within the 702nd that their actions and accomplishments are seen at the highest levels of leadership within Europe. The opportunity to show their knowledge and experiences with the command team is something that will stay with them for the remainder of their career.”

86 FSS preps families at SNCO seminar

Tech. Sgt. Gerry Volcy, 86th Comptroller Squadron supervisor budget analyst, speaks during a professional enhancement seminar Aug. 11, 2016, at Ramstein Air Base. Master sergeants and master sergeants select learned about ethics, mentoring, counseling, stress management and core values during the three-day course.

Srory and photos by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Team Ramstein hosted an annual professional enhancement seminar for over 165 master sergeants and master sergeants select Aug. 9-11, at Ramstein. The PES served to prepare Airmen and their spouses from the Kaiserslautern Military Community for the move to the senior NCO corps with stress management, ethics, core values, mentoring and counseling training. According to Senior Master Sgt. Robert Berrier, 86th Force Support Squadron career assistance advisor, the importance of the course is making the transitioning stage matter to the new senior NCOs. “We conduct these seminars to aid the junior-to-senior-NCO transition and help build on the foundation of professionalism, dedication and commitment that these men and women have already established,” Berrier said. The three-day course kicked off with leadership welcoming the master sergeants select into the program. Berrier said the positive differences

between the two tiers of NCOs will be felt by the Airmen they serve with. “We always try to highlight the change, impact and influence that our newest senior NCOs will have on their units and their Airmen,” Berrier said. “We challenge them to think about the challenges they will face, while leading and developing our future Air Force leaders and what their legacy as a senior NCO will be.” For the first time at Ramstein, spouses were involved in the mentorship seminar. According to Tonya Wright, senior spouse mentor, this is a move in the right direction in better preparing Team Ramstein. “With this big promotion comes new aspects to the job,” Wright said. “We figured that spouses needed to also be trained on learning what to expect as their spouse makes the leap into that tier. They might have to work more, so spouses’ relationships might be affected. This new seminar’s goal is to give spouses a platform to relate with others and handle their stress levels better.” As Ramstein Airmen take the next big step, the PES aims to ensure a smooth transition by preparing senior NCOs and their spouses for the next chapter in their Air Force lives.

Senior Master Sgt. Clinton Ellis, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron logistics superintendent, speaks to a crowd of senior NCOs and senior NCOs select during a professional enhancement seminar Aug. 11, 2016, at Ramstein Air Base. More than 165 Airmen are becoming senior NCOs, demonstrating that Team Ramstein’s PES is made to ensure SNCOs make the transition as smooth as possible.

The 31st car-free adventure day will take place 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday along the German Wine Street. From Bockenheim in the north to Schweigen in the south, Germany’s oldest wine tourist route will close to motorized traffic. Bicyclists, skaters and hikers will have the 85-kilometer car-free route to themselves. This year’s motto is “Heavenly Pfalz.” Parishes and church communities along the route will support the event. According to organizers, the Pfalz is a paradise for wine lovers, since it is not only the biggest growing area of the Riesling grape worldwide and the biggest red wine area of Germany, but with its vine diversity, it also offers something for every taste. The minis-

ter president of RheinlandPfalz, Malu Dreyer, the Palatinate Wine Queen, Julia Kren, Bishop Dr. Karl-Heinz Wiesemann and Christian Schad, president of the Protestant Church in the Palatinate, will officially open the event at 10 a.m. in Klingenmuenster. The ringing of church bells and hundreds of balloons will accompany the opening. Church institutions will serve “Heavenly Appetizers” on 12 stations such as cheese sticks with Madonna grapes, pilgrim waffles, heavenly broccoli with goat cheese and beet sauce, heavenly nut mixes and cakes from paradise. For €5 the appetizers will be served with the right drink such as wine, prosecco or coffee. Visitors can ask for stamps and win prizes with two stamps. About 30 villages and towns along the German

Wine Street will take part in the car-free wine street day, offering entertaining programs with many attractions to include music, sports and games. The Pfalz Sports Association will sponsor its traditional 10-kilometer run, which will start in two places again. The route in the north will go from Bockenheim to Kirchheim, and the one in the south from Weissenburg to Bad Bergzabern. Starting time will be 10 a.m. Organizers ask all bicyclists, walkers and skaters for mutual respect. DRESDEN, A HISTORIC CITY with a Will to Live

Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com Dresden, the capital of Saxony, is situated along the River Elbe valley close to the Czech border. It is a city that has been destroyed by European wars a couple of times, but has always risen and reinvented itself to some admirable glory. It’s a beautiful city that beckons you for a visit!

History Dresden has one of the longest histories as the royal residence and capital of the Kings and Electors of Saxony that for hundreds of years gave the city a unique artistic and cultural splendor that spread to all of Europe. Dresden has been settled since 7500 BC with its founding associated with the massive expansion towards the east of Germanic peoples. The city of Dresden was founded

in 1206. By 1270, Dresden had become the Margraviate capital and returned to the Wettin dynasty in 1319. The Saxony dukes looked at the city as their seat in 1485 before the electors did the same in 1547. From 1809 to 1918, Dresden city became the Kingdom of Saxony’s capital. Napoleon also made Dresden an operations base during his Napoleonic Wars where he won a major victory in 1813; the Battle of Dresden. Nonetheless, during the 19th century, Dresden was a strong economic city where food processing, motor car manufacturing, medical equipment manufacturing and banking were taking place. By the early twentieth century, Dresden had become famous for its successful cigarette factories and camera works. Until 1933, the German city was the center of modern art in Europe as well as being the first ever Free State of Saxony capital from 1918 to 1934. It is during the twentieth century that Dresden suffered its heaviest blow that is still felt to date. As the heart of art and manufacturing and communications, it suffered greatly when over 90 percent of its city center was destroyed by allied bombing on February 13, 1945. Apart from the fact that the City of Dresden was bombed into obliv-

ion, the historic buildings around the city were reconstructed. In fact, the perfection of the reconstruction and attention to detail will make you wonder whether the bombing really happened. The city center is quite compact and you can cover a good number of its highlights in 24 hours.

Where to Visit You can begin at the Semperoper or the Opera House’s outer plaza for a satisfying walking tour. The rich and colorful exterior design is the stuff of every casual visitor with a guided tour in German and English also provided. There are music and opera performances every night and it’s a place to be if you have the time. Zwinger Palace close to the opera house is a favorite site for many in the city of Dresden due to its ornate exterior in the Baroque style. Re-

naissance and Baroque priceless art is housed in the Old Masters Picture Gallery or the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. It is also a place to find the Nymphaeum with lots of nymphs and a wonderful Baroque fountain. In the open plaza is the Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady, offering a 360-degree quaint view of Dresden from its cupola. The bird’s eye view of Dresden from the top of the Frauenkirche is hugely unforgettable. How to Get There By car Dresden is approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern.
