Garrison employees shred their way to success while protecting privacy

Andreas Schork ensures a pallet of records destined for destruction fits onto the truck. The records will be shredded and sold to a mill that makes toilet paper.

“We originally had this as a cost project,” said Dr. Richard Calnon, director of human resources. “We were going to pay someone to destroy it and they shifted over to a zero-cost contract through con tracting because of the expressive interest in having the resources. The resources being the paper.”

Story & photos by Nicole Alberico U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Garrison employees at Panzer Kaserne, reached a major mile stone Aug. 15 when the last of near ly 19,200 boxes of expired records were loaded onto the truck for destruction – at relatively no cost to theThegovernment.loadhauled out of the Records Holding Area weighed more than 15 tons, or about the weight of 12 small cars and was removed and disposed of securely by a contracted shredding service. The removal was part of an Armywide push to digitize paperwork and lower the need for garrison record holding areas. The team worked for four weeks sorting and loading 20 truckloads worth of paper files. The shredded records will eventually turn into ... toilet paper. Yes, toilet paper.

The garrison’s Chief of Administration Services Brian Raymond displays an example of the company’s shredding quality. He says this type of shredding exceeds the Army’s standard for documents that contain personally identifiable information.

“We are protecting the records until they don’t exist,” said Calnon. Despite a heavy weight –583,122 pounds to be exact – being lifted off the Records Holding Area, that doesn’t mean the area is clos ing just yet. Raymond said there still are records that must be kept. By law, certain records must be retained for decades, or in some cases, forever. The Army will keep those records locally until they are eligible to be moved to a federal holding area such as the National Archive and Records Administration in College Park, Maryland. Despite the contracted heavy load of work, the team didn’t escape time in front of the shred der. Paper that isn’t cutout to be toilet paper, such as X-rays from the early 2000s, must be destroyed by the in-house shredder.

“There’s still work to be done,” Raymond said. “But now we get to be ahead of the game. This frees up manpower, and manpower is money.”

The records’ chance at an after life not only saved the garrison money, but also contributed to the “Ready Garrison” efforts on becoming a greener garrison.

The garrison’s Chief of Administration Services Brian Raymond oversees the Record HoldingRaymondArea. ensured skeptics that the old adage of “you get what you pay for” doesn’t apply here. He said the secure shredding ser vice used exceeds the Army’s stan dard for the documents that often contain social security numbers, birthdates, banking information, and other personally identifiable information.Additionally, the documents are shredded along with the compa ny’s current workload. That means an archived Army Civilian’s living quarters allowance application or a Soldier’s paper leave request from 2002 could be shredded alongside a mortgage paper application from a commercial bank in Frankfurt. The company then sells the shreds to a mill that produces toilet paper and paper towels. To add an extra layer of secu rity, Raymond said member of the records team followed the truck to its shredding destination to ensure the records not only arrived at the shredding facility securely but were also destroyed within hours of arrival.

U.S. Air Force Col. Bryan Callahan, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing commander, places a wing coin on a memorial for fallen 435th Troop Carrier Group per sonnel in Normandy, France, Aug. 11. The ceremony involves placing sand from Omaha Beach in the let tering of the headstones, followed by the placing of American and French flags. The process is meant to honor service members who gave their lies during Operation Neptune (D-Day) on June 6, 1944. Members of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing walk on Omaha Beach during a Battle Staff Ride in Normandy, France, Aug. 11. BSR participants visited multiple locations and historic sites where aspects of Operation Neptune took place in 1944.

After multiple discussions about the wing’s future, staff rode down to Normandy to learn more about their wing’s historical roots, specifically regarding the 435th Troop Carrier Group and its support of Operation Neptune on June 6, 1944. The 435th TCG with its four Troop Carrier Squadrons, 75th, 76th, 77th, and 78th, flew two missions on D-Day in direct support of the 101st Airborne Division (dropping para troop infantry) and the 82d Airborne Division (landing glider artillery). Callahan stressed the significance of including the staff ride as part of the con ference.“Iwanted my commanders to know where they came from, what their heritage is, and to use that heritage to inform their idea of what this wing is today.” Before departing, participants received formal education on the sites they’d be visit ing and the history of the operation. Doctor Jeffrey McGovern, 12th Air Force historian, led the instruction and the staff ride across the region. McGovern previously served as the 435th AGOW historian before moving to 12th AF at Davis Monthan AFB, Arizona. During the staff ride, participants vis ited multiple locations including Omaha and Utah beach, Normandy American Cemetery, Pointe du Hoc, overgrown airfields, and a crash site where the 435th TCG lost five per sonnel. After visiting Omaha beach, participants visited the graves of two 435th TCG Airmen at Normandy American Cemetery and held a short ceremony honoring their sacrifice. The ceremony involved placing sand from Omaha beach into the engraved lettering on the headstones, followed by placing of the American and French flags. Maj. Lane Campbell, AGOW wing chaplain, provided a short message as well. While being able to visit these historic locations in person was valued by everyone, Callahan said it was watching his command ers build relationships that left the biggest impression upon him. “Watching our leaders discover each other was the most powerful part of this trip. Seeing them learn this wing’s legacy and how they are part of that together was amaz ing. Now we’re looking ahead to see how we can weaponize that legacy and integrate with each other more in the future.”

“The intent for this week was to integrate the wing and a new leadership team into our processes in systems,” said Callahan. “We wanted to form a strong team quickly!”

“We spent the summer reconstituting the wing’s response to crisis, but now we’re going to be getting after taking what we’ve started and making it better,” Callahan said, discussing what Airmen can expect to see at the 435th in the coming months. “In order to reflect how our wing operates in the real world, Airmen will see more integration across our routine exercises.”

“Life is hard, and some people have a hard time navigating through that. Maybe if they get one tool they can use, it can save them some time and pain.”

Story & photo by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Christopher Thao, 65th Air Base Squadron network operations tech nician, was inspired to join the military by the legacy of his fam ily members who fought in the Vietnam War. “For me, it was just the torch being passed down,” Thao said. “A lot of our uncles and grandparents died. They fought on the militia side with the Americans during the war and rescued their families to go live in America. If they could do that, I thought I could join too.” When Thao walked into a recruiter’s office in 2019, he was ready to accept any job that would get him into the Air Force as soon as possible. He had previous experi ence with information technology, which helped him select a career in cyber systems operations. “I told myself if I joined, I would throw in 110 percent every day no matter how hard or easy the day was,” Thao said. Since leaving for Basic Military Training in October 2019, Thao hit the ground running, living up to the expectation he set for himself by working to be better than he was the day Whilebefore.stationed at his first base, Schriever Space Force Base, Colo., Thao earned Senior Airman belowthe-zone, a program allowing Airmen to sew on Senior Airman six months early. Afterward, he implemented a mock BTZ board system, assisting five other Airmen to promote.Thaoalso implemented a $1.2 million virtual desktop infrastruc ture system within a week. The system works by installing mul tiple servers which host virtual machines, creating a main image that everybody on the installation can log into allowing the network to function much faster through automation.Alongwith making physical improvements to the base, Thao taught resilience classes to new Airmen at the Schriever SFB First Term Airmen Course to build morale and future leaders.

“Some personal achieve ments of mine I never thought I could accomplish are running a half marathon and climbing multiple 14,000-foot mountains in Colorado,” Thao said. “Prior to joining the Air Force, I could barely run a fourth of a mile.”

German American Community Office & 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Germany is a great place to enjoy life with dogs. Germans love their pets, but there are rules for dog owners that Americans may not be aware of before moving to the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The German American Community Office has put together some important information. When walking your dog near fields or in wooded areas, there are several things to keep in mind. Just recently, five deer were hunted to death by unleashed dogs in the KMC, which under German law is a criminal offense and will lead to legal consequences for the owners. Avoid any areas where wild ani mals might seek protection and cover, such as bushes, scrubs or overgrown grassy areas. Farmers’ and forest paths may generally be used for recreational strolls and to walk your dog. Your dog should be leashed at all times to be on the safe side and to avoid your dog not reacting to your com mands or running out of sight. Be courteous and make sure that your dog does not frighten or jump at joggers, pedestrians or oth ers walking their dogs. Retractable leashes will allow your animal to run and play, but can be drawn short, if required. Also, do not let your dog eat or chew any objects found along the way. Unfortunately, there have been cases of dogs being poisoned or injured by pieces of meat, sausage or treats spiked with sharp obstacles. Enjoy Germany’s fresh green fields and beautiful forests with your dog and make it fun for everyone! tourScoutsC-130J

While technical focus may overshadow Tyner’s nerves at the Bonneville starting line this year, the end goal is to get the bike to the finish“Hopefullyline. we get another record and not a smoldering, melt ed motor or one of us crashing,” he said. “That sucks at these speeds!”

“I grew up riding, and Bonneville is on a bucket list for gear heads and people that like motorcycles,” Tyner said. In 2017, Tyner and his wife finally visited the salt flats. That day, Tyner volunteered at a race and said from then on, he was hooked. This year, the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials is sched uled to run Aug. 27 to Sept. 1.

When he’s not racing, Tyner serves as an official, a motorcycle inspector and a technical steward for the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme, the international organization for motorcycling activ ities.“These highly specialized bikes require careful inspection by three licensed technical stewards to be deemed safe to race,” he said. As one of only five licensed stew ards at Bonneville for this year’s race, Tyner will spend a lot of time inspecting race bikes and working in the tower as a controller. “Experience and attention to detail go hand in hand with being successful in racing and being a DLA Energy QAR,” Tyner said. “Not adher ing to the standards in the fueling world can have severe consequences for equipment and personnel.”

The team plans to race their 2002 Suzuki TL1000, “Mad Max,” which currently holds the record for that motorcycle class at 171 mph with streamlining and 157 mph “naked” without any streamlining. This year, the team plans to race the bike naked“Weagain.plan on racing again to break our own record, if luck is on our side,” Tyner said. “We want to go faster than 171 mph.”

“Most of our bikes are 100 percent purpose-built and not just souped-up street bikes,” Tyner added. “You can’t just order up a kit to make a recordbreaking bike. I design and make nearly everything by hand, including the chassis, injection systems and computer triggers.”

Tyner, a 21-year Air Force vet eran and 13-year Defense Logistics Agency Energy quality assurance representative, is a member of a motorcycle race team that is mul tiple-time national champion and world record holder for land speed racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Nicknamed the “Speed Capital of the World,” Bonneville is ideal for racing because of the bar ren, flat and vast terrain.

Jaron Tyner, a quality assurance specialist for Defense Logistics Agency with 34 years of fuel experience, sits on his team’s motorcycle called the Coconut Express before a race at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, August 2021.

“We are a grassroots effort,” Tyner said. “Our machines are designed and built solely in our garages by our own hands.” His goal is to come up with inno vative ideas to make them go faster.

You’re pushing it to the limit and hoping, more than any thing, it doesn’t blow up on you.”

The team hopes to race another bike they call, the Coconut Express — a heavily modified Ducati Superbike. While they aren’t plan ning to break any records, their goal is to gather data for next year’s attempt, Tyner said. “There’s no place to test the 10-foot long, 3-foot tall, twin turbo racer with only a tiny rear brake,” he said. “It needs a minimum of 5 miles just to test.”

Try to: • Walk to school, the mall or work instead of taking the bus or getting a ride • Ride a bicycle to the grocery store, your bus stop or to your job • Include a walk in the park as part of your date • Do sit-ups or push-ups during the commercials on TV • Walk or jog laps at your school track or at the local mall • Remember, any movement counts!

• Walk the dog (again!), or go for a walk with a sibling or a friend. Walking is excellent exercise and exploring can be fun!

• Go swimming! Just paddling around in a swimming pool is excellent aerobic exercise, and its fun too.

• If you live on military base, find out if they have a skate park, or even a bowling alley. With so many different ways to exercise it can be hard to choose.

• Pace or walk in place when watching YouTube videos • Do squats or raise up and down on your toes when talking on the phone

After school:

• The local “Y” offers mem berships to military families and personnel though the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Military Outreach program.

Making a plan can help take the guess work out of figuring out what to do each day, and keep you on track toward meeting your health goals. The heart is a small muscle in your chest that is the size of a fist. It pumps blood all over the body so the body has enough oxygen and nutrients to function prop erly. It is important to exercise your heart just like you would exercise any other muscle in your body. Exercises that increase your heart rate and strengthen your lungs are called aerobic exercises. Aerobic exercises pump blood from your heart at a faster rate and expand your lungs to more effectively move oxygen. When your heart and lungs are working harder during aerobic exercise, they are getting stronger just like doing sit ups to build your abdominal muscles. If your doctor says it’s OK, you should exercise at least 60 minutes a day to keep your heart healthy. Some different types of aerobic exercises are skating, bicycling, swimming, basketball, hiking, and running.

Getting started • Being active does not have to be about exercising only in the gym, during gym class or even a specific routine. It can be about doing something fun that you enjoy. It can be as simple as doing jumping jacks, racing up and down the stairs, jogging in place or even danc ing. Mix it up and make it work for you. You can start by: In the morning:

Running around, walking down the hall or playing hoops, dancing and yoga all count as exercise. Keeping active and moving is good for your body. Your body needs your help, so let’s get moving! Are you a couch potato? Being active is not only good for your body but also for your heart and joints. Keeping active helps prevent “sitting disease.” Yes, sitting disease is real and it is no joke! Sitting disease happens when you spend more time sitting down either on the computer, watching television, or looking at mobile devices. Here is what happens: When you sit for a prolonged period of time, your body goes into “sleep” mode. When the body goes into “sleep” mode, our metabolism slows down. When the body goes to prolonged states of “sleep” mode, the body becomes at risk for obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease. It doesn’t take much to prevent sit ting disease. Any movement, even lei surely movement, is better than none. Try this to prevent sitting disease:

• Stand during commercials when watching TV

• Stand up, walk to the kitchen and drink a cup of water every hour when studying. Set a timer on your phone to remind you!

• Mow the lawn. Huh? That’s right, mowing the lawn or even vacuuming inside the house is good exercise and will score you bonus points for doing chores too!

• Wake up 10 minutes earlier than you usually do and do some deep stretching before you begin your day.

Dodge ball, flag football, even freeze tag! Are all great sports and games, and you don’t have to be a star athlete to play. Recreational leagues are full of people that just want to have fun and get some exercise.

MYW_Kids_FS.pdfmoveyourway/materials/PAG_https://health.gov/paguidelines/started: Plan for success There are so many different ways to get up and get moving it can be hard to choose.

• Sign up for a rec league or intramural sport just for fun.

• Visit the Boys and Girls Club and find out what activities they offer.

• Walk during lunch break instead of sitting and talking after you are done eating • Sign up for a school sport! There are lots of sports to choose from, and it’s a myth that you have to be a pro to make a team by the time you’re in high school. There are lots of sports teams looking for beginners to participate too.

• Walk the long way to your class instead of arriving early and sitting longer • Participate in PE. Use the time in class to get some exercise!

• Ask you parent to park fur ther away from the store when going shopping so that the walk to and from the car is a little bit longer.

“I had no doubt in us,” said Spc. Preston Hatsell, a member of the V Corps winning squad. “I think we performed really well out there, and it was very exciting to hear we won.”

The runner-up squad, rep resenting 7th Army Training Command, lay claim to the “Top NCO,” an award given to non commissioned officer Sgt. Alexis Ortiz-Rivera. Spc. Anthony Falson, assigned to 21st Theater Sustainment Command, received the “Top Shot” award.

The U.S. Army Best Squad Competition will be in September, leaving the V Corps squad — now the U.S. Army Europe and Africa squad — approximately one month to prepare. “I’m looking forward to it; it’ll be more difficult and the competi tion may be tougher, but we’ll just have to train harder and get after it when we get there,” said Spc. Garrett Headden, a member of the winning squad. The competition, centered around the U.S. Army’s This Is My Squad initiative, showcased out standing cohesion, camaraderie and leadership among Soldiers of various backgrounds and ranks.

right now of how proud I am of the hard work they put into this com petition,” said Staff Sgt.
