Jonathan Redfern, Brian Brackens Air Force Life Cycle Management Center In November, the Air Force completed fielding of an improved chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear protective mask for aircrew on rotary wing aircraft, allowing operational units to achieve full operational capability. This next-generation mask, also known as the Joint Service Aircrew Mask — Rotary Wing, replaces the Aircrew Eye and Respiratory Protection system on HH-60G Pave Hawk and UH-1N Huey aircraft. The new mask provides aircrew vastly improved ocular, percutaneous and respiratory protection and integrates with night vision goggles, requires no aircraft modification, and has joint service commonality, a five-fold increase in fit factor, a
six-fold increase in battery life, and a removable faceplate. In addition, the mask gives aircrew an enhanced field of view so they can better conduct combat missions in a CBRN environment. “With recent and continuing world events, our nation’s ability to effectively fight and win in an environment that involves weapons of mass destruction has become more and more important,” said Dr. Mohamed Mughal, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s CBRN Defense Systems Branch chief engineer. “So far, the Air Force has already delivered JSAM RW masks to almost a dozen airbases around the world.” Fielding teams from the joint program executive office for CBRN defense and Air Combat Command have trained aircrew flight equipment personnel on sizing, fitting and preventative maintenance checks and services for the JSAM See CBRN PROTECTIVE MASKS, Page 3

While meditation, exercise and adhering to your normal routine are common checklist items on how to cope with a traumatic event, another method to reconcile the process is storytelling. Six Kaiserslautern Military Community members embraced this method during a U.S. Air Force Storytellers event on Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 16.
On the dimly lit stage, a diverse panel of storytellers shared their triumphs of resilience covering heavy topics, including battling eating disorders, alcoholism, surviving sexual assault, and post-traumatic stress disorder. “The best lessons I’ve ever learned in life have come from the worst experiences,” said one of the event’s participants, Maj. Our culture needs authentic leaders who aren’t afraid to highlight the simple fact that we are all human, no matter what our age, rank, or background.” In a U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health Journal, Laurel J. Kiser writes about the benefits of storytelling within a family. Kiser wrote, “We are social beings. In trying to make sense of the good and the bad things that happen to us, we naturally share those experiences with those closest to us often through storying.” Kiser said sharing a narrative becomes a new language of hope and discussing a stressful event aids healing. “I have been going to therapy for about a year now, but it was never as gratifying as being on that stage,” said Senior Airman Imani Strong, 24th Intelligence Squadron geospatial analyst and an event participant. “Speaking at Storytellers has helped me cope with my challenges by knowing that someone was hearing my story and my struggles and can see a way out of what they might be going through.” Airman 1st Class Sierra Adams, 603rd Air Operations Center information operations analyst also spoke at the event and said she had 10 people approach her after, thanking her. “They related to my pain somehow,” Adams said. Adams reiterated the importance of speaking up stating, “Your story can impact others. Someone, somewhere is going through something similar. That’s why I was so willing to share my story.” Storytellers started at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, in 2012. Since its launch, Airmen across the globe have connected with audiences to

better heal, encourage, and support one another who may have experienced similar trials. “Letting others know that they are not alone in their pain is a
powerful gift,” Adams concluded. “I hope the attendees walked away knowing that they are not what has happened to them, but they are what they choose to become from it.”

As autumn fades, the most magical time of year approaches. The coming days bring excitement, resolutions, and celebrations large and small. It’s the most wonderful time of year. If that doesn’t sound exciting to you, perhaps this will hold your interest: did you know that the earlier you file your taxes, the sooner you can collect any refund the IRS may owe you? That’s why it’s best to start thinking about the paperwork you might need to file federal and state income taxes as soon as possible. To help you with that, the volunteer income tax assistance program at the Ramstein Law Center would like to make sure you know what paperwork is needed to prepare your taxes properly: First, your tax preparation assistants will need to determine that you are you. You will need your photo ID and social security cards for you, your spouse and dependents. You will also need to know the birthday of every dependent to be listed on your tax return. Next, you will need written proof of any and all income you or your dependents earned during the cal-

86 AW Retiree Activities Office closure The 86th Airlift Wing Retiree Activities Office (RAO) will be closed from today through Jan. 1, 2019. RAO will open again on Jan. 2, 2019. B10 construction period The B10 at Pirmasens/Fehrbachtunnel will be reduced to one traffic lane only. The total construction period will last until Dec. 12. Motorists are asked to drive carefully and follow road signs accordingly. B420 detour The B420 in the community of Medard will be blocked for traffic until Dec. 20 while a new lane divider is being built. Road signs will designate detours. Motorists are asked for considerate driving and understanding for any inconveniences. L498 road work The L498 between Burgalben and Donsieders will be blocked for traffic until Dec. 30. Main Street (Sandweg) in Waldfischbach-Burgalben will also be partially blocked. The carpooling parking lot will still be accessible for vehicles. Road work has become necessary as rain has washed out the embankments potentially causing rocks to roll down onto the road. KMC Post Office new website The new KMC Postal Operations SharePoint site is ready for CAC users (Active Duty/Contractor/Civilians) to use for Inprocessing, Mail Hold or Forwards, OutProcessing, and Volunteer Opportunities at the Ramstein (North/South) and Kapaun Post Offices. The site can be found through the USAFE SharePoint portal. Questions? Contact the Northside, Southside, or Kapaun Post Office Customer Service sections. Parking discs needed In certain parking lots on Ramstein Air Base, display of a parking disc is required. The maximum allowable time a car may remain in these lots is posted; the driver must set the disc to the arrival time and make it visible. The following are some parking lots where discs are required; MOMS, Ramstein Officers’ Club, the commissary, the library and the community center. Parking without displaying a disc or remaining past the allowed time could result in a citation. Visitor Control Center process and hours The Ramstein Visitor Control Center now issues passes with a scannable barcode. These passes are valid for one to three days and may be used at any KMC Air Force or KMC Army installation. Any request longer than three days will require customers to receive a long-term pass. Customers should understand with the process, waiting times may be longer than usual. The VCC opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., seven days a week. After hours, customers may still sign in guests at the west gate. The sponsor must be registered in IACS to sign in visitors. Furthermore, ID card holders who forget their ID may also be searched in IACS and be granted base access.

Flight commanders: Leading charge

Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Approximately 16 company grade officers assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing and their geographically separated units attended the 521st AMOW flight commander’s course on Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. The course focused on training officers in flight commander positions to fill the liaison role between Airmen on the ground and the squadron commander. “I think the biggest thing, especially as a flight commander, is listening to your Airmen, figuring out where the issues are and how you can be that translator between your squadron commander and your Airmen, and figuring out what they need to employ that in the best way possible,” said U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Sara Loveless, 721st Aerial Port Squadron air terminal operations center duty officer. For newer officers like Loveless, this training helped build a network of fellow officers she can reach out to when she needs additional guidance. More experienced officers like U.S. Air Force Capt. Christian Lora, 424th Air Base Squadron airfield
operations flight commander, praised the curriculum. “This is the first time I’ve been in this course. It’s been awesome. One of the key take aways is that (the course) is very broad. It touches on a lot of different things, not just supervising enlisted members,” said Lora. The course brought in briefers who’ve held multiple flight commander roles to share their experiences on how they successfully lead their Airmen. “It has been an awesome opportunity to hear from other officers that range from brand new second lieutenants to mid-level captains from multiple different career fields,” said Loveless. The course also demonstrated how to lead through recent changes in the enlisted force structure, and how flight commanders should use first line enlisted members to better accomplish the mission. “It’s been an awesome opportunity to soak up the wisdom of those who have had a lot more experience,” said Loveless. “This program has been able to give me the tools to do my job. I’m now able to rate my Airmen the way the Air Force wants me to,” said Lora. “They are giving me the right tools to do it well and I’m giving everyone an opportunity.”

by Keith Wright Air Force Safety Center Public Affairs On Nov. 15, the Air Force Safety Center released a mobile version of the Airman Safety App enabling Airmen at installations Air Force wide to voluntarily report safety issues with their devices as they encounter them. A capability designed to advance the Airman Safety Action Program, this simple proactive tool utilizes every Airman as a sensor to identify hazards in their workplace and throughout the installation for the purpose of mishap prevention. “We are leveraging technology to capture those unintentional errors, hazardous situations, and high-risk activities that may not be identified through traditional safety reporting channels,” said Kevin Tibbs, Airman Safety Action Program manager for AFSEC. “The Safety Center receives more than 60 reports a month that may not have been revealed otherwise.” Submissions to ASAP using the Airman Safety App are designed to encourage open reporting of safety concerns and information that might be critical to identifying precursors to accidents. This includes initiating reports identifying (1) the existence of hazards, (2) events or conditions negatively affecting nuclear surety, and (3) chronic, workrelated occupational illnesses. As of Nov. 1, more than 4,500 ASAP
reports have been filed since 2009. Of those, 858 in FY18 were remote submissions via the URL-based app. The Airman Safety App, once downloaded from the major app stores — Apple or Android — is accessible anywhere, anytime, and focuses on minimizing the most common obstacles, making reporting quicker and easier to accomplish. “The main advantage of the downloadable app vs the web-based app is that it is self-contained,” said Frank Svet, deputy chief of the Analysis and Cyberspace Operations Division at AFSEC. “It does not need a data connection or a browser to enter and store inputs to the application, while the web-based app requires a data connection to reach the URL initially via a browser, then the app is cached and can be utilized from that point on without a data connection.” The application brings a modernized touch to the Air Force’s safety reporting by providing a paper-free connection between the submitter and the safety professional at their own installation saving countless hours in the process. Additionally, the report will be instantaneously available for that safety office to triage the issue and start mitigating identified hazards. “Whether it’s a young Airman at the gate or a pilot in the plane, feedback is important to closing the loop,” added Tibbs. “Not only does the submitter receive a response to their issue through
active messaging, but ASAP helps “next generation” Airmen by passing on valuable lessons learned across the force.” Air Force personnel with a Common Access Card can access the ASAP "Scoreboard" on a protected website in order to see what others are reporting and to see what remedial actions have been taken to address those identified hazards. While the majority of the functionality of the URL-based app will be replicated on the downloadable app. One enhanced feature enables air crew to default to aviation only questions. Another feature will enable the user to submit test/practice reports to the Air Force Safety Automated System simulations environment. The downloadable app was a costeffective initiative developed and tested “in-house” by AFSEC personnel to provide Airmen with advanced reporting options and improve the center’s ability to capture hazards at installations around the world. “Technology has transformed how Airmen send and receive information now more than ever,” said Douglas MacCurdy, chief of AFSEC’s Analysis and Cyberspace Operations Division. “This app capitalizes on these advancements and takes our mishap prevention efforts to the next level by providing users with real-time access to submit safety hazards and issues.” Download the Airman Safety App on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store TODAY.

The 86th Airlift Wing commander and command chief lauded U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Dillion Matautia for his excellence in executing the Air Force’s mission across the European theater of operation.
Matautia, a Washington state native, led 10 active duty personnel and Local National team members who were recognized as the sole receiving point for two NATO exercises and President of the United States support. Aside from operational accomplishments, Matautia and his team collaborated with 86th Munitions Squadron on a 24-hour operation to receive Ramstein’s largest shipment of ordnance since Operation Allied Force in 1999, in support of NATO’s European
Deterrence Initiative. Matautia expressed gratitude to the LRS for their support and is thankful for having the opportunity to serve in the U.S. Air Force. “You never achieve anything alone,” said Matautia. “You achieve goals as a team. So to everyone here that has supported me, thank you.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World ’s Best Wing.

Staying vigilant through the holidays Story and photo by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz The holiday season is upon us, with festivities such as Christmas markets, celebrations, concerts and other public gatherings. Though these activities are sources of fun and enjoyment, potential risk is always present. U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz force protection officials remind military personnel and their families to exercise caution and stay vigilant through the holidays. USAG RP Antiterrorism Officer James Miller said it’s important for personnel to reduce potential risk when traveling or visiting attractions, entertainment and other venues and activities during the holiday season. “It is prudent to develop, refine and implement sound individual or family safety plans,” Miller explained. “Ensure everyone in the family or travel group
knows the plan and continues to take appropriate measures for their safety, security and well-being.” Miller said these plans will differ based on whether you’re traveling to another country or simply heading downtown to a local Christmas market. Plans should be developed regardless of how close or far you’re traveling and should be specific for the location of travel - however, every plan should contain the following safety tips: 1. Maintain a low profile, avoid wearing clothing or accessories that cause you to stand out. Blend in as much as possible. 2. Know the locations of U.S. Consulates and other safe havens — such as local police stations and hospitals — and carry emergency numbers with you. 3. Avoid civil disturbances or demonstrations of any kind.
4. Never travel alone. Always travel in groups of two or more. Miller also stressed the importance of enrolling in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and checking the Department of Defense Foreign Clearance Guide before planning a trip. “These sites will give you important travel information before you start traveling,” he explained. “Several countries have travel restrictions, so check before you purchase your tickets.” Visit these sites at: STEP: https://step.state.gov/ Foreign Clearance Guide: https://www. fcg.pentagon.mil/ Additionally, the USAG RP Antiterrorism Protection Office developed Travel Guidance and an Individual

Jason Edwards echoed Miller’s sentiments about exercising vigilance this holiday season. “Everyone should maintain a high level of situational awareness and apply appropriate measures to reduce risk,” Edwards said. “Stay vigilant in crowded areas, especially mass-transit nodes such as airports and train stations and have the information ready to quickly report suspicious activity. Most importantly, enjoy the holidays and take care of yourself and your loved ones.” To report suspicious activity, notify local law enforcement, use the iSALUTE link at the bottom of the garrison website or download the U.S. Army Europe iReport mobile app.
National 3D Prevention Month saves lives through education Story and photo by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz During December’s National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month, emphasis is placed on reducing the number of impaired drivers on the road to prevent loss of life. This is done through an active campaign to help educate drivers about the risks and consequences of driving while impaired. “It is important to remind our community to avoid getting behind the wheel while impaired and prevent others from driving while impaired as well,” said Velia Bravo-Johnson, National 3D Prevention Month coordinator and intern with the Army Substance Abuse Program. “This is for our own safety and that of everyone around us.” Although impaired driving is an issue year-round, these instances may spike during the holiday season, BravoJohnson said. “During the holidays, I think people often want to relax and celebrate, and they forget to make a plan. Some people may have a few drinks, think they are fine, decide to take the chance and get behind the wheel,” she explained. Bravo-Johnson also mentioned that when judgement becomes impaired, people may have a false sense of sobriety and make the mistake of getting behind the wheel. Impaired driving is a crime, wheth-
er drivers are under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription drugs – that’s why the 3D prevention campaign is committed to ensuring the safety of all drivers and passengers on the road. In 2017, there were 10,874 fatalities in the U.S. caused by drivers with blood alcohol concentrations of .08 grams per deciliter or higher, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Closer to home, there were 132 instances of people Driving Under the Influence in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, according to the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Directorate of Emergency Services. That’s 132 potential accidents with possible loss of life. So what are some things people can do to mitigate impaired driving risks? Since alcohol and drugs can impair a person mentally and physically, the first step is to recognize when someone is impaired and step in to prevent that person from getting behind the wheel, Bravo-Johnson explained. “Remove car keys from an impaired individual if necessary. Offer to take the person home or offer him or her to stay the night. If this is not an option, call a taxi, a trusted person who is sober or as a last resort call KMC Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving,” she said. Bravo-Johnson also advised using low-risk guidelines like – 0, 1, 2, 3, which signifies:
0. Illegal drugs / prescriptions not prescribed for you / driving after drinking / alcohol or drugs while pregnant 1. Standard drink per hour 2. Standard drinks per day – not to exceed 14 per week 3. Maximum standard drinks on any given day “There is nothing more destructive to a person’s life, family or career than the catastrophic consequences from drunk or drugged driving,” said USAG RP Deputy Garrison Commander Dr. Kevin L. Griess. “When you drink or get high and then drive, you are weaponizing your bad decision. Your vehicle then becomes one of the most dangerous things possible. You will create a high risk of being killed, maimed or worse — killing someone else. My own father was severely disabled for decades after being struck by a drunk driver. This is not a matter of ‘if ’ something will happen, it is ‘when.’ Make a better choice. Enjoy yourself. Have a ‘Plan B,’ get home safely for yourself and others.” People who need help dealing with substance abuse and sub-
stance use disorders can contact the Army Substance Abuse Program and Substance Use Disorder Clinical Care for assistance. Sankt Wendel combines tradition with medieval market by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event. The city of Sankt Wendel will hold its Christmas market combined with a medieval market Saturday to Dec. 16. More than 140 little decorated houses and booths will offer arts and crafts, gift ideas and regional culinary specialties 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The medieval market will feature vendors in historical costumes, who sell their merchandise. Craftsmen such as basket makers, lantern makers, blacksmiths, potters, turners and soap makers will dem-
onstrate their work and ask visitors to try to do the same. Jugglers, dancers, singers, musicians and a magician will entertain in the streets and on stage. Camp groups demonstrate how people lived, worked, ate and celebrated in the Middle Ages. Every afternoon at 4 p.m., the Three Holy Kings from the Orient and their camels will go through the center of town. Back at their camp they will perform the Christmas story in colorful scenes. Each night, at 7 p.m., there will be a show with fire, lights, music and dancing. Children can meet Santa Claus and his reindeers 11:30 a.m., 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. daily. They can have a seat on his sleigh and tell him their wishes for Christmas. A 12-meter tall Christmas pyramid, life-sized nutcrackers, a dwarfs’ forest and a big
nativity scene will lure visitors as well. A nostalgic merrygo-round, mythical creatures, forest and water ghosts, and a dragon will provide some more excitement for children. A night watchman with horn and lantern will patrol the market at 7 p.m. before the brass players perform from the basilica tower at 7:30 p.m. to let visitors know that the market is about to close. Kaiserslautern boys, girls win basketball opener For the Kaiserslautern boys and girls basketball teams, playing the game was the easy part. They both won, but it was a road trip they would rather forget. Because of nasty winter weather and the subsequent traffic slowdown on the autobahn and some transportation issues, a trip to Vilseck that normally takes four hours turned into a nine and a half-hour ordeal, causing the Friday games to be cancelled. They were able to play the Saturday contests as scheduled and despite the delay and Friday cancelation, they gathered their composure and both gutted out close victories. It was the season opener for both. The girls had to figure out how to check Vilseck’s strong post play in Rebekah Heckert and Tedega Marshall. Vilseck started out strong by hitting a few jumpers from the wings and dominating the boards. With outstanding post players Heckert and Marshall having their way inside, Coach Scalise made a defensive change and went box and one, putting defensive sparkplug Dezi Joihnson on Marshall. It worked as the Raiders, spearheaded by leaders Emanjanae Hawkins and LaJhanique
Brown, who scored 18 and 17 respectively, clawed their way to take a threepoint lead at halftime and held on to win by that margin, 43-40. Heckert finished with 16 points and Marshall with a double-double posting 15 points and 17 rebounds. For the Raiders, Brown had 21 points and teammate Hawkins added 14. Coach Scalise cited Brown’s overall court awareness and solid floor game as the difference. The Raiders play undefeated Ramstein tonight. Ramstein defeated Wiesbaden 63-21 in it’s opener. The Kaiserslautern boys also came out on the winning end 51-46, but struggled early before finally finding their stride. Vilseck had everything their way in the first quarter and started with a 21-5 lead. “It appeared that everything we had practiced in the last three weeks was thrown out the door,” veteran Raiders coach Corey Sullivan said. “Their 20 point scorer was very good. He did not force things. He made shots when he was open. We tried to make sure we knew where he was when it came to crunch time in the fourth quarter.” So, faced with the travel ordeal, the cancelled game, and the fact that this was their first game, how would the
Raiders react to the adversity? It was gut check time. They made up their minds to toughen up and go to work. Even though they were down, they remained calm and patient and slowly started their comeback. “What we did to get out of that 16 point hole was simply go back to what we’ve done. We switched defenses, but the kids started to execute so much better,” Sullivan said. The defense tightened the screws and, led by Eric Santiago, Bryan Lunn and Brandon Morris, started to shut down the potent Vilseck offense. The Kaiserslautern offense was led by Tre Dotson and Isaak Pacheco who both registered double figures. Their next contest is the long awaited rematch with Ramstein tonight. The boys will host the four-time defending champion Royals while the girls will play Ramstein.

Shopping Beyond the Military Base
Grocery Stores Let’s first head to the grocery store. Depending on which part of the United States you are from, you may be familiar with WalMart Megastore, Publix, Piggly Wiggly, County Market, Food City, Safeway, Whole Foods, Arlan’s Market, Giant Food, Kroger, and many many more. If you are looking for grocery stores in Germany, then look out for Aldi, Lidl, Netto, Penny, Edeka, Globus, Real, and others. Although German grocery stores may be a little smaller and have fewer items than what you are used to in the U.S., you will find all your necessities such as food items (fruits & vegetables, dairy products, meats, breads, canned goods, frozen goods, organic products, snack foods, etc); beverages (including alcoholic drinks); cleaning products; paper prod-
ucts; health products (lotion, shampoo, etc.); sanitary products, baby products, and much more. Additionally, many of the German stores offer their own brand goods at a cheaper price than the well-known brand products. You will find some unexpected non-food items at a German grocery store that you would not typically find back home. For example, have you ever thought about buying a bicycle or a computer at a Piggly Wiggly or a Publix? Well, you can sometimes find these items at a discount store like Aldi or Lidl. Some non-food items may include pots and pans, electronic devices, appliances, clothing, sports and leisure goods, school and office equipment, crafts and gardening goods, toys, magazines and newspapers, DVDs and other items. Because German bakeries are essential to its people’s way of life, it is not surprising to find a bakery located in all German grocery stores, offering fresh bread, pastries and more. You can also find a fresh meat, seafood and cheese sections in larger stores such as Edeka and Real, but they may not be available in discount stores such as Lidl or Penny. One of the first things you will probably notice that is different about German stores is the shopping cart. In Germany you will need a coin (usually a 50 cent, 1 or 2
euro coin) in order to use it. You just simply place the coin in the slot to release the chain that is connected to the other carts. And when you finish using the cart, replace the chain to get your money back. Carts can be found outside in the parking lot or in the front of the store. Other things that you may find different are the following: the cashiers are sitting; you must bag your own items and take them outside as there are no baggers; and you must pay for your own bags. If you are wanting to use a (U.S. or German) credit card or a debit card, it is best to ask the staff before purchasing because some smaller stores like bakeries, stores accept cash only, but this is changing more and more. Drugstores Back home we are familiar with Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid. In Germany large drugstore chains include Müller, DM and Rossmann. Their range can be divided into four areas: remedy (teas and essences); beauty and wellness (body care and skin care products, fragrances, essential oils, cosmetics, etc.); organic health foods; and products for house and garden maintenance.
