Serving as the global gateway to Europe and beyond, and home to a host wing containing seven groups and 30 squadrons that provide the only airlift, airdrop and aeromedical evacuation flying operations for U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, the operations tempo remains high, forging ready and resilient leaders.

Seeing these leaders return to the base, even if just to visit, is always an honor and a privilege, especially when that individual is now the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

On her way to becoming the 19th chief appointed to the highest noncommissioned officer position in the service, CMSAF JoAnne S. Bass had two five-year assignments at Ramstein, once as a noncommissioned officer and once as a senior noncommissioned officer, including her time as the 86th Operations Group superintendent.

December 10, 2021 CMSAF BASS IS BACK from Page 1 walking through familiar locations and even running into some familiar faces. She met with various units, discussed the successes and challenges faced with Operation Allies Welcome, checked in on dayto-day operations and hosted an all-call.

“There is so much to love about the region here,” Bass said.

“I think the best experiences about living in Germany are the people and the rich friendships that you build through the experiences of living with your German neighbors, side-by-side. We learned to slow life down a little bit, enjoy company, enjoy our food and enjoy life.”

After speaking with Airmen from multiple units about their roles during OAW and their personal experiences with the operation, Bass quickly learned about the overwhelming amount of support that poured in from the surrounding community.

“There are villages everywhere where everybody came together wanting to support each other,” Bass said. “Even on this base, I talked to so many of the local nationals who have worked here for 30, 40, 50 years. It’s because of those bonds and the relationships they have built that it’s really one team.”

As she toured hangars, offices

and the air traffic control tower, Bass greeted Airmen with notable sincerity. Perhaps another German characteristic Bass picked up during her time at Ramstein, whenever she greets anyone, she looks them in the eye, and kindly asks how they are doing. She’s not looking for a casual ‘fine,’ or ‘good, how are you?’ She wants details and she is ready to listen. She truly cares about what’s going on in their life.

“My focus is really on people, readiness and culture, but specifically the people piece,” Bass said.

“I’m focused on how we make sure that we have the right people and the right talent serving, so that in 2029 or 2049 we don’t have another nation becoming a world dominant power.”

Bass also discussed Air Force initiatives, lines of effort and plans for the future.

“So, what am I thinking about all the time?” Bass asked. “Where is my headspace, and where’s the headspace of Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown and the Secretary of the Air Force? I’ll tell you there is not a day that goes by that we are not utterly focused on strategic competition. What’s my mind focused on? It is 100% focused on any bad actor who wants to harm our nation. My hope is that every Airman, whether you’re E-1 all the way to O-10, really understands the gravity of

what’s going on in today’s landscape.”

Pointing out that the Air Force has changed since she first joined, Bass made sure that Airmen realized in addition to the conventional military domain focuses of air, land and sea, today’s military is also heavily focused on information, cyber and space.

“You have to have a strong air, land and sea component, but now all of a sudden, we have these new domains that are a fact of life,” Bass said. “Those new domains are information, cyber and space, and if we lose in any of those domains, we can never get after air, land and sea.”

Bass asked Airmen to consider how they will help the Air Force be successful in the long-run and to really think about Gen. Brown’s challenge to all Airmen to “accelerate change or lose.”

“We need to take a holistic look at how we evaluate talent in today’s Air Force because we’re focused on the long game and how we have the right talent in our Air Force,” Bass said. “My ask to people is while you’re serving in an allvolunteer force, all I ask you to do is move the ball and make the Air Force better.”

Bass ended every speaking engagement thanking Airmen and their families for their service and sacrifice, “It has been a pleasure spending time with all of you.

Thanks for what you guys do.”

FALL & WINTER TIPS WEATHER, ROAD AND CLIMATE SITUATIONS The Ramstein and surrounding areas are subject to severe winter weather and temperatures. You can prevent unnecessary damage(s)/vehicle accidents by keeping these procedures in mind: 1. Remove water hoses from outside water faucets whenever the outside temperature is expected to fall below 35 degrees Fahrenheit or 1.6 degrees Celsius.

2. Secure all items in your yard during high winds. If you have an outdoor storage shed, ensure that the storage shed doors are locked to avoid potential wind damage.

3. Whether living on or off-base, ensure that you close your home’s Rolladens (rolling shutters) when high winds occur or when a high wind warning has been issued.

4. If you have power or heating problems in your quarters/home, you can call the Housing Maintenance Contractor (Vectrus, COMM: 06371-4639510). If you live off-base, immediately contact your landlord.

5. During periods of inclement weather, please call ahead to the location you are visiting as frequent changes may occur. LRMC information As you may have heard, due to rising numbers of COVID-19 infections, Germany has revised the Infection Protection Act, which is applicable to U.S. Forces in Germany in accordance with Article 54 of the NATO-SOFA Supplementary Agreement.

In the revision, workplace access is restricted to vaccinated, recovered or tested employees.

In light of the revised act, we want to remind our communities that testing capabilities at military treatment facilities are reserved for official purposes and individuals who present medical symptoms.

The Hacienda has been in the same spot in Kaiserslautern since 1986. The current manager and most of his staff of 30 people have been running the business since 2008. They used the downtime during COVID to reupholster the furniture and upgrade the kitchen.

You will find rustic setting with a mix of colorful Mexican decor and you can hear quiet Mexican jazz tunes playing in the background.

Every table has a small hand-woven flag to hoist once you are ready to order. There is a whole page with lunch specials to choose from and during lunch time you get free refills on soft drinks (Monday-Friday until 2 p.m.). Chips and salsa for the table

are free at anytime of day which is a nice treat while you wait for your food. The service is good with polite, multi-lingual waitresses and waiters and the kitchen works fast.

Thinking about the Hacienda, it’s hard not to imagine the sound, smell and taste of the sizzlin’ fajitas being carried out of the kitchen. If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, the fresh Cesar Salad with or without chicken breast is always a good option, or a nicely filled crunchy taco with ground beef, shredded beef or shredded chicken, plus the usual lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese on top. The Hacienda menu does not disappoint in variety. You’ll find the typical Mexican starters like Chile con Queso, Nachos, Ensaladas and Sopas, main dishes like Burritos, Tacos, Tamales which can also be combined to a mixed platter of your choice, even American style wings and burgers aren’t missing and last, but not least, there is an extensive list of Postres —desserts— with Flan, Helado, Churritos and more.

Wait, let’s not forget the kids! They have their own menu with Nachos, Pizza Mexicana, fresh, grilled chicken breast or hamburgers… just to name a few.

The staff and kitchen are well informed when it comes to gluten and lactose intolerance and are prepared to give you options. You’ll have to ask though, these are not on the menu.

Quench your thirst with their homemade lemonade and iced tea or a frozen margarita with or without alcohol. For those of you who like try a different kind of beer, be sure to check out their selection of Mexican beers like Dos Equis, Sol or Corona Extra.

The restaurant can easily seat 200 people with an additional party room for up to 90 people. It’s possible to book the party room for company events and seminars or private get-togethers and celebrations. You can choose your own buffet style set-up or eat “à la carte”.

They also accept large to-go orders and offer party services.

During the summer months they open their outdoor top-level terrace to enjoy the fresh air with your fresh food.

Olson visited multiple facilities, such as the air traffic control tower, the firefighter department and the petroleum, oil and lubricant facility. Olson was shown the work being done there

by the Airmen who accomplish the 424 ABS mission of delivering world-class airfield operations for the North Atlantic Alliance. Olson presented his coin to multiple Airmen for their hard work and dedication to the mission, leaving a lasting impression on them and encouraging them in their future endeavors.

Chièvres AB runs on Coffey

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Aaron Coffey, 424th Air Base Squadron emergency team leader, grew up enjoying history and mixed martial arts.

He had limited options when it came to entertainment as a kid living in a rural town. His love for his-

tory began when his grandmother introduced him to the Bible.

“The earliest memory I have is when my grandma bought me a Bible,” Coffey said. As I flipped through the pages and saw the inside cover, before Genesis even started, there was a map of the Middle East. It had a map of the Hittites, Babylon and Egypt. As a kid, my mind was blown. I kept

wondering ‘How far back does history go?’”

Ever since that, Coffey became fascinated with history and has had a love for maps.

“I have maps from long ago posted all over my walls of Europe, China and the Middle East,” said Coffey. “It's really the maps that fascinate me and make me want to learn more about history.”

While stationed at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, Coffey hopes to travel and visit many historical landmarks.

“My goal in life is to be able to spin a globe and randomly point to any landmass on it and be able to give a rundown from as far back as we have evidence of civilization — a generalized idea of their history all the way up to present day,” said Coffey. “That basically gives you a perspective that makes you realize that no matter how different human beings from different places may appear, we end up doing the same things.”

Not only does Coffey love a nice history lesson, but he also is a MMA fanatic.

“There's just something about squaring off with another human being. It’s beautiful in a weirdly violent way,” said Coffey.

In addition to watching Ultimate Fighting Championship matches, Coffey also participates in them.

“I am an all-around average person when it comes to my height and physique, but, when it comes to MMA and jiu-jitsu that is highly irrelevant,” Coffey said. “If you have enough training you will always be able to defend yourself, no matter how big the other person is.”

Learning MMA is a detail-oriented sport requiring commitment, diligence, hard work and humility to prosper. These are the same qualities that make Coffey the Airman he is now.

“Due to us having such a small shop and people taking leave, a lot of responsibilities have fallen on me and I have had to do the job of a staff sergeant, or even a technical sergeant would normally do,” said Coffey.

“Leadership saw I was doing a good job and chose me to be Airlifter of The Week, which makes me really happy.”

Coffey was awarded AOTW for his commitment to excellence for his shop. Coffey assisted in overseeing the unit’s leave, duty schedules, additional duties, individual medical readiness and 24-hour operations, Nov. 24.

“Coffey is a hard worker and if anything needs to get done, he is your guy,” said Senior Airman Timon Richardson, 424 ABS emergency response security forces. “I can call him at any hour of the day and he’ll be out and ready to help in just a few minutes.”

When COVID-19 restrictions loosen, Coffey has now made it his goal to see all of Europe and visit each and every historical landmark.

Story and photo by Katie Lange Department of Defense News It was dark at Pearl Harbor's Tripler Hospital on the evening of Dec. 7, 1941. The bombings by the Japanese had stopped, but the concern of more attacks continued.

Window blinds were still drawn and lights were still out. The injured and dying lay everywhere, and as many people as possible were taking care of them.

It was an extraordinary time — especially for one young mother, who gave birth in that chaos.

“There was a baby born in the evening, in the dark. They had a flashlight. That’s what [the nurse] used to illuminate for the doctor,” said Winnie Woll, the daughter of Army Pearl Harbor nurse Teresa Stauffer Foster. “This baby came into life when all these other people around were dying.”

When Woll told me that story, I was a little bit shocked and even more curious to find out who that baby was. I eventually learned his name was David Burpee. It turns out he was one of two infants born that day, and the military pretty much became the theme for his whole life.

When I said I would be interviewing Burpee, a lot of colleagues jokingly asked if I was going to see what he “remembered” from that day. Clearly, the answer is nothing, but he definitely knew the details from the story his parents told him.

Mom and Dad Burpee’s father, Harry, had enlisted into the Army Signal Corps and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii before being sent to Wake Island to help install bomber beacons.

“On the way out, his sergeant talked to the commander and said, ‘Don’t forget, Sgt. Burpee is going to have a baby. You’re going to send him back, right?’” Burpee recounted. Apparently, it took a while for that promise to be kept, but eventually his dad was shipped back.

“He was halfway in between Wake and Hawaii when the attack occurred. His unit was all shot up in Hawaii, and everybody on Wake was killed or captured and died in a prison camp,” Burpee said, referring to the Japanese attack on Wake Island around the same time as the Pearl Harbor attack.

As for Burpee’s mother, Amney?

She’d been in Tripler for three days already, expecting his arrival.

shift maternity ward to just a regular ward, because they were bringing in the wounded so fast,” Burpee said.

Much like many Americans intimately involved in World War II, Burpee’s mom didn’t talk about her Pearl Harbor experience much.

“It was strange — she was like a soldier who had really been on the front lines,” Burpee said. “They’re the ones who don’t talk about it much, and she didn’t either.”

Not alone Perhaps the most fun things Burpee learned about his birth?

That he had a nickname from Day 1 — and he wasn’t the only baby.

“There was one other child, a male, born in Tripler that day,” he said. “There were privacy concerns as well as wartime concerns, so rather than release names, they gave the babies nicknames. He was born during the attack, so his nickname was ‘Blitz,’ and I was born after the attack, when things quieted down later at night, so my nickname was ‘Blackout.’”

Three weeks after the attack, because there were concerns of a land invasion, officials moved all female civilians and children onto a troop transport to take them to California. So, Blackout’s stint on Hawaii didn’t last long, but it’s something that he eventually realized was pretty special.

“I think the first time of significance was when I was in high school, and a local newspaper found out that I was a Dec. 7, 1941, baby.

They came out and did an interview, and I thought, ‘OK, that’s kind of interesting,’” he said.

A military life Burpee went on to become a

lifelong Army man himself, rising to the rank of colonel during a 28-year career that included a combat tour in Vietnam. Burpee served in several public affairs positions, too, including as the media officer when U.S. Central Command formed. Burpee was the personal public affairs advisor to NATO’s supreme allied commander for Europe during the Gulf War. He also worked at the Pentagon’s press room and for the Office of Secretary of Defense before he retired in 1993.

“I loved every minute of it.

One job was better than the next,” Burpee said. “For me, it’s been the interaction with the people, … being exposed to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, because most of my time has been spent in joint or unified or international commands. It’s really very gratifying to see.”

As for that other baby, Blitz?

Burpee said his name is Stan Loer, he lives in Oregon, and they met for the first time when they both returned to Pearl Harbor for the 75th anniversary of the attacks in 2016.

Burpee’s parents had passed before that 75th commemoration, but he and several other relatives returned to the scene of his birth to attend the remembrance ceremonies at Hickam Field, where his parents had lived. While he won’t be attending the 80th commemoration this year, he said he wishes he could continue honoring the men and women who lived, died and fought that day.

Special tactics Airmen compete together for Team USA bobsledding

by Capt. Alejandra Fontalvo 24th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs For the first time, two special tactics Airmen assigned to the 24th Special Operations Wing competed together in a major competition for Team USA bobsledding Nov. 28-29 in Park City, Utah.

Maj. Chris Walsh, a special tactics officer, and Staff Sgt. Matt Beach, a combat controller, competed together at the International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation North American Cup for a chance to represent Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

As a special tactics officer, Walsh is trained to lead teams of special operations ground forces for global access, precision strike and personnel recovery missions, however since August of 2019, he’s been training and competing as a full-time athlete in the

Air Force’s World Class Athlete program. The WCAP provides active duty, National Guard and Reserve service members the opportunity to train and compete at national and international sports competitions with the ultimate goal of selection to the U.S. Olympic team while maintaining a professional military career.

“It’s great to be in the Olympic team picture at all,” Walsh said.

“Competing with Team USA, USA Bobsled and the other athletes is a pretty big honor and to represent the Air Force on an international stage is awesome. You hope that you’ve done enough and things work out to where you end up making the olympic team, regardless of that outcome, to me the whole journey of learning a new sport and being able to compete and push myself to the highest level has been very rewarding.”

Beach, currently assigned to the

22nd Special Tactics Squadron at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington, started his bobsledding journey in 2020 under the guidance of Walsh and fellow Air Force Special Operations Command teammate and bobsled athlete, Capt. Dakota Lynch, a U-28 Draco pilot.

“Being introduced to the sport by a fellow ST member is an example of just how good the leadership in the community is,” Beach said. “Having people like Maj. Walsh and Capt. Lynch to coach me through the process has been pivotal to getting me to where I am. Very rarely does anyone come in and instantly master the push and load. It’s a process, but it’s a process I look forward to.”

Both ST operators are push athletes, who use their explosive strength and precision to accelerate a two or four-man bobsled. In order to excel in this role, the athletes have to con-

duct thousands of correct repetitions to make sure every hundredth of a second counts. Although the physical training for this process is different from the fitness training required for special operations missions, the mindset needed is similar.

“The biggest thing from Special Tactics that translates to bobsledding is the mindset that you gain from going through all the ST training,” Walsh said. “It’s that no-quit, figure out how to find a solution, figure out a way to be successful-type of mindset. There are days where it’s really tough and you have to do a lot of late-night work on the sled and then get up early the next morning to compete, so having that gritty mindset is very valuable.”

In addition to the “gritty” mindset, special tactics operators are accustomed to being in extreme pressure situations where high levels of precision are required in rescue missions, controlling aircraft or guiding bombs on targets, which in turn helps them as athletes compete at the highest levels.

“To compete at this level requires the same focus and attention to detail as pre-mission prep and mission execution,” Beach said. “(Bobsledding), believe it or not, has a lot of parallels with the ST community.”

Unlike Walsh, Beach is not currently part of the World Class Athlete Program and still works as a fulltime combat controller continuing to train alongside his teammates at the 22nd STS. “Competing at this level while maintaining all the currencies expected of us as operators is not an easy feat,” Beach said. “Scuba diving all day and jumping out of planes in the middle of the night is not the best recovery when having to race some of the best athletes in the nation, but I have found a way to make it work.”

In typical ST fashion, both athletes and operators are determined to continue to push themselves to the highest level in whatever they do. For example, last year, Beach took on a popular internet fitness challenge back at his squadron in which he had to complete a sub-five-minute mile and squat 500 pounds in the same day. Not only did he complete the challenge, but he made sure it was executed to the highest standard by using a certified professional running track and receiving official review from USA Powerlifting judges to verify the squat.

Meanwhile, Walsh also had his eye on professional car racing and became the first active-duty service member to compete in the TC America Series, a touring car racing series in Virginia earlier this year. He ended up placing third overall among some of the top racers in North America.

Although the ST Airmen hope to represent their country on the Olympic stage, in 2022 for Walsh and 2026 for Beach, even more so, they love the thrill of a good challenge and encourage others to pursue their goals no matter what.

“The best advice I can give anybody to accomplish anything they want to do is, to just start it,” Walsh said. “There’s never a perfect plan from the beginning. I can wait until the moment’s right or I can jump when I’m at an 80-percent solution and see where I land. And if I fail, figure out how to fail better the next time and eventually succeed. Just begin to build whatever it is that you hope to do. Once you start, you can figure things out as you go.”

Walsh and Beach placed 6th overall in their most recent competition, despite some equipment issues. They will be competing once more before the 2022 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York Dec. 18-20.

Often, deposits can be steep in Germany meaning you would like to get all of it back or at least as much as possible.

There is a very high standard in Germany when it comes to cleanliness. What you assume to be “clean” possibly doesn’t meet the standard your landlord may be used to.

It is also likely they will be checking places you would never think to clean (like the top of cabinets or other hidden places). The easy route to go would be to hire a cleaning company that specializes in PCS cleaning to save on the stress of not knowing if you will be up to snuff. Here is a handy link to cleaning companies: www.finditguide.com/ cleaning-services. If you choose the route of do it yourself, then here are a few tips that may help you during the dirty job.

Clean the oven Ovens often go ignored through the year and unless you regularly clean them, you are in for a big job to get it “German clean.” If

you put it on “Self Clean” mode (if you even have that on your unit), it can take a really long time and may make your whole place stink. Try baking soda and vinegar (it is safe with no chemicals).

• Start with a ½ cup of baking soda and a few tablespoons of water.

• Mix them together and coat the oven in the paste you just made.

• Let it sit overnight.

• Wipe out the oven the next day.

• Spray some vinegar on areas where baking soda residue exists (and watch it foam).

• Do a final wipe down Clean the glass electric cooktop It is common in Germany to have a cooktop that is made of glass that is electric.

If you don’t clean these every time you use them, it can be a tough job when it comes to moving out.

• Baking soda or lemon juice can help clean stubborn stains.

• Use a razor blade carefully to scrape up the encrusted bits (but be really, really careful!).

• Use citrus based cleaners from your German grocery store (try “Frosch” products!).

Cleaning tips for your PCS Did we say clean after every use!

Use a good vacuum If you are doing your PCS clean, you are probably (and should be) going into lots of cracks and crevices. That will mean you need a good vacuum to get all the areas that need cleaning.

Clean cabinets inside and out (and on top) Just cleaning the face of the cabinets is not good enough. Making sure you get inside and cleaning shelves is important not to forget. You will also probably want to make a run at the top of cabinets. Often there are decorations put at the top of cabinets, so this can be considered usable space.

Steam clean rugs If there are any permanent rugs in your apartment or house, they will need to be steam cleaned. Rugs can be home to all sorts of stuff like bits of food, hair and even bugs.

The only way to make sure the next tennant is in a clean place is to steam clean it.

Get on your hands and knees and scrub It is likely you are not going to see all the dirty areas from a standing position. In order to really see how dirty areas are, you are going to have to get down there and inspect... and then start scrubbing. Just mopping a floor is likely going to leave areas that are not clean (like the corners). These are small things that can trip you up when inspection time comes.

Bonus Tip Clean your barbeque so it is spotless — You may not have a barbeque as part of your rental, but if you brought your own barbeque, and you plan on taking it home, it will need to be spotless in order for a shipping company to pack it. All grease traps, burners and housing must be extra clean or they will not take it!

Rocha-Mendoza and other OAW volunteers were recognized during a series of three ceremonies at Armstrong’s Club, Vogelweh Military Complex, Nov. 30.

Story and photo by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command More than 400 Kaiserslautern Military Community volunteers contributed 2,000 hours of service at Rhine Ordnance Barracks during Operation Allies Welcome, as the 21st Theater Sustainment Command coordinated life support for more than 7,000 Afghan travelers during September and October.

At three ceremonies, held Nov. 30 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh, 21st TSC Commanding General Maj. Gen. James Smith and 21st TSC Command Sgt. Maj. Sean Howard presented volunteers with certificates of appreciation, citing the breadth of services they provided and the positive impact their efforts had on travelers and mission success.

The three successive ceremonies were necessary to ensure compliance with current COVID-19 restrictions limiting gatherings to a maximum of 50 people at any one time. Rather than cancel or postpone the ceremony, 21st TSC leadership committed to “triple down” and host three separate ceremonies.

“I am humbled to stand here and publicly say thank you to each and every one of you for your outstanding role in support of Operation Allies Welcome,” said Smith.

From welcoming travelers with blankets and goody bags, to providing English language lessons, volunteers enhanced the living environment and interacted with the travelers in a myriad of ways. “More significantly, you’ve provided them hope,” read the certificates of appreciation.

Kaiserslautern Elementary School Sure Start teacher Linda RochaMendoza was moved to volunteer after reading a call for help in an email.

“I never donated any clothes, but

I can donate my teaching time, so I signed up,” said Rocha-Mendoza.

Even with 20 years of experience teaching in Kaiserslautern, she learned something new teaching English as a second language (ESL) to the Afghan travelers. “I just jumped in and helped out. It was awesome, because I learned so much from them [the younger teachers].”

Thinking about what the children and their families had been through affected her deeply. “I went home the first two days crying,” said Rocha-Mendoza. “They had left their whole world, and they were going to something new. But kids are kids in any language, wherever they are. And they were just so excited to learn.”

Rocha-Mendoza was one of many area DODEA and local community teachers, led by Kaiserslautern Middle School ESL teacher Morgan Guinn, who volunteered in the evenings after a full day of teaching. Many said they felt more energized at 10 p.m., after volunteering, than they did at 3 p.m. after their normal workday. What began as a request for whiteboards, grew, thanks to Guinn’s initiative, into English lessons for children, and eventually into classes for adults at every LSA at Rhine Ordnance Barracks.

“Every day we just grew and grew,” said Guinn. “We were providing writing lessons, listening lessons, speaking lessons, geography lessons, American culture lessons. It was way more than just English. I think we were an amazing team,” said Guinn.

“A great group of people came together at the right moment.”

Volunteers were critical in ensuring travelers had appropriate clothes and shoes for the colder German climate, as well as personal hygiene items and toys for the children.

Sylvia Sanderson, who works at HQ USAREUR Vehicle Registration,

volunteered during the evenings and on weekends to solicit and distribute needed items.

“I organized clothing donations, shoes, strollers, bassinets whatever the demand was,” she said.

“I reached out to the garrison at Vilseck/Grafenwöhr and Wiesbaden as well as the Kaiserslautern Military Community, and took care of the logistical part of pickup and delivery in person” The communities were able to respond quickly to the need for specific items that may have taken longer to access through normal military procurement channels.

“I was just a tiny part of it,” she said, crediting other volunteers and community support.

As the travelers prepared for the next leg of their journey, she helped organize luggage donations so families could transport their goods. She said getting the items, including crafts, crayons and backpacks for the children, into recipients’ hands was heartwarming. She encourages others to volunteer to help people in need and make new connections.

“I’ve been a military spouse for over 34 years, have volunteered throughout the years and there is always a need for volunteers,” said Sanderson.

21st TSC Deputy Commander Col. Douglas LeVien, who welcomed the volunteers at each ceremony, said they contribute a sense of community to the 21st TSC and make the United States Army a family.

“By getting our Afghan travelers into a better place both mentally and emotionally, you accelerated their integration into American society,” said LeVien. “You made a tremendous difference in thousands of Afghan lives.”

According to the volunteers, the Afghan travelers had a similar effect on them.

A text- and telephone-based notification system helps Soldiers, civilians, and family members navigate storms, avoid black ice, and stay safe.

Quickly getting weather, incident, and closure alerts with U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz is as easy as signing up with the Alert!

Mass Warning Notification System.

Alert! will quickly notify Soldiers, civilians, local nationals, and family members of important information in the garrison footprint. Alert! messages come through on DOD desktops via a pop-up, a telephone call, and/or a text message.

“All service members, civilians, and contractors are required to register for this program, and we highly recommend that local nationals register as well,” said Claude Jones, garrison operations officer. “If your place of duty is on a DOD facility, you must sign-up for Alert! and ensure your contact information is current.”

“Alert! is important for all of our community members,” continued Jones. “It is a quick and efficient way for us at the garrison to reach community members quickly. We use the system to notify our users of emergencies, road conditions, and garrison closures or delays.”

Family members can also receive notifications; however, their sponsor must sign up first and enter family member information.

The garrison safety office highly recommends having Alert as part of a complete information update matrix.

“When you register for Alert!, please sign up for all the installations you frequently go to,” said Diaz. “Some people commute between the Kaiserslautern area and Baumholder. These installations are two separate areas, so you will need to receive notifications from both.”

Staying connected with the garrison for possible hazards in the community is essential, said Larry Strickland, garrison safety chief.

“We want all of our community members to be up-to-date and quickly informed of all safety and hazardous information,” said Strickland. “This program allows us to do that quickly and efficiently. Safety is everybody’s responsibility. Let’s be Army Safe, Army Strong.”

Family members are not required to register for the system,

but they are highly encouraged to sign up, so they also receive all the garrison’s notifications, Jones said.

“TDY and deployments mean that sponsors are not always near their family members. By registering them for Alert!, you will ensure they receive the garrison’s notifications.”

Jones also recommended checking the system once a year to ensure information is current.

“The system stays with you throughout your career,” said Jones. “We all move around and go to different duty stations,

Baumholder commemorates 70 years of American military presence

by Nicole Alberico U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Like most relationships that span 70 years, they are guaranteed to have their ups and downs. That rings as true today as it did 70 years ago when the Americans took control of the Baumholder Military Community from the French military.

In normal times, such an occasion would have been marked with merriment; however, the ongoing pandemic turned today’s commemoration into a quiet celebration.

“The host nation relationship in Baumholder Military Community is one of the strongest in Europe and not being able to celebrate such a momentous milestone with our German-American community is unfortunate,” said Jae Kim, BMC Deputy Garrison Manager. “We hope to recognize this historical occasion and reinforce our strong partnership once it is safer to do so.”

At a recent annual lighting of the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Christmas tree at BMC, Baumholder District Mayor Bernd Alsfasser expressed gratitude for the GermanAmerican partnership and called on everyone to get through the pandemic together.

“To all of you — Soldiers, civilians, family members — we offer our sincere appreciation for your efforts and enhancing the safety and security of prosperity in the Baumholder community. Together we are strong.”

Boom town On March 18, 1945, at about 3 p.m., American tanks rolled into Baumholder from the direction of Birkenfeld. In a 1945 agreement, the French occupied the post after World War II. The German army built the post and adjacent range as a training base in 1937.

In late 1951, the Americans took over the post and soon began a large construction program turning the city of Baumholder into a boom town.

Bernd Mai, a garrison public affairs specialist at Baumholder, has lived in the area his entire life.

only assume how it was 70 years ago, but he pulls his historical knowledge from the book “50 years of Americans at Baumholder” and from conversations with the author Herbert Grimm, as well as other contemporary witnesses.

According to Mai, construction companies from all over Germany brought in thousands of workers daily.

From 1953-1954, the first housing areas north and west of the city border, known today as Smith Barracks housing, were built. A 200-bed hospital, 524 apartments, a school, and a gymnasium went up at unimaginable speed, said Mai. Also in 1954, the so-called “Tank trail” that leads around the

city was constructed, said Mai. The trail relieved the city of military vehicle traffic, including tanks.

“Many visitors came from far and near to experience the unique Baumholder atmosphere. Even though it was illegal, they brought with them cigarettes and whiskey, or visited the American clubs on the installation to enjoy the high quality entertainment that was offered,” said Mai. “Baumholder began to earn a bad reputation during this time, but the visitors didn't stop coming.”

According to Mai, during its heyday, Baumholder had more than 30 bars and taverns and more than 20 restaurants.

The BMC has played a part in most world events involving the U.S. since its beginning, according to Mai. He points to the post-WWII Cold War when tanks from Baumholder would’ve been some of the first units into the Fulda Gap to stop a Russian advance. Other events like the Berlin Airlift, Desert Storm, 9/11 and Enduring Freedom meant troops and equipment were mobilized and put into harm’s way.

Mai said Baumholder drastically changed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He said the city stood by its American friends as spontaneous memorial services took place.

However, after being an open post for decades — where local residents were used to walking on post at their leisure, Baumholder immediately closed. According to Mai, suddenly guards controlled access onto the installations and a fence was built.

Baumholder Military Community’s comeback in the making The BMC was slated for closure in 2009 and the money for infrastructure was cut off. That decision was reversed in 2014, but those five years took its toll.

Now, the U.S. Army plans to move troops to Baumholder from other parts of Germany. Buildings are being renovated and made ready as the time for more Soldiers and families inches closer.

“The strong partnership between the U.S. military and Baumholder area communities directly contributes to the wellbeing of the service members and their families, military readiness and regional financial health,” said Kim. “As we celebrate the 70 years of this close relationship, the future looks bright as ever for the community.”

A local memorial for Brian Kirby will be held Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. at Northside Chapel on Ramstein Air Base.

attended Wichita State University, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree (summa cum laude). On a visit home in March of his sophomore year of college, Brian officially accepted Christ as his Savior, and was baptized in the river by his dad. Cold temperatures and low water flow necessitated digging out a space to be immersed, but what a memory.

He lived his faith throughout the rest of his life.

Beginning in 2001, Brian spent his career as an Air Force civilian working for the medical group in Health Promotion.

During his career he spent time at McConnell AFB, Ellsworth AFB, Shaw AFB, Whiteman AFB, and Ramstein Air Base. Just three months before he passed, Brian was proud to be recognized for

Having grown up in his parents’ auto repair shop, Brian took much pride in knowing how to fix his vehicles and helping friends and family with their cars. Brian loved to cook and took every opportunity to prepare meals for friends and family. Brian thrived on service to others, most notably to his wife and daughter. A lifelong Christian, Brian’s faith guided his service to others and devotion to his family.

A local memorial in Germany will be held Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. at Northside Chapel on Ramstein Air Base. Stateside services will be held in his hometown of Syracuse, Kansas in mid-December. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to samaritanspurse.org in support of Operation Christmas Child.

Brian Christopher Kirby, 46, of Steinbach am Glan, Germany, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 26, at St. Johannis Hospital in Landstuhl.

Brian is survived by his wife of 21 years, April, and their daughter Amelia, age 13.

He is also survived by his parents Robert and Arlene Kirby of Syracuse, Kansas and his younger brother Alan (Sandra) Kirby of Pittsburg, Kansas. Brian is also survived by several aunts, uncles, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Brian was born February 18, 1975 in Syracuse, Kansas at Hamilton County Hospital, delivered by Dr, C. E. Peterson, the same doctor who delivered his mother 23 years earlier. He loved books, learning to read before starting kindergarten. When he was 2 ½ years old, his brother Alan was born. They spent many hours riding big wheels in the back yard, eventually progressing to a go-cart they roared around in the parking lot next to his parents’ auto repair shop.

Brian loved playing little league baseball, building model rockets, and anything electronic. He learned to play the piano, playing the song “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” for Grandpa Fred and Grandma B to dance to at their 50th wedding anniversary when he was 8.

Even though Germany is one of the most populous countries in Europe, it still contains forests, mountains, and quiet natural places. If you pay attention, you’ll quickly find that you’re not alone out there. Germany also has a great deal of wildlife that can be safely spotted!

“Wilderness” probably isn’t the word that comes to mind when you think about Germany. If you’ve been here for a while (and even if you haven’t), you might think first about autobahns, tidy villages, or big cities like Berlin and Munich.

But Germany still has wild spaces, and plenty of them.

Chances are, in fact, that you’ve got a forest within walking distance of where you live. And if you can find a forest, then you can find some excellent wildlife.

Before you start searching, always remember that the animals you find in the wilderness are WILD animals. Which means that you should never approach them, even if they look really cute.

Here’s a short list of creatures for which to keep an eye out.

Foxes are a joy to spot. They’re cute, sleek and definitely afraid of humans. They also like pastures, fields, forests, and even village edges. Keep a lookout during

afternoon walks. It also helps to be quiet and dog-free.

Jackrabbits

The European hare is massive, as far as rabbits go, and possesses a towering pair of ears. When they bound off after spotting you, it’s also impressive to see how far they can jump. Take care, though, if you’ve got semi-excitable dogs.

They may well drag you down if you’re not careful. Or you might not see them for a while if they’re off the leash.

Wild boar

These are some of the coolest animals you could hope to see in the wild…from a distance.

German wild boar can grow to be quite large. They’re also wily and can be really aggressive if they feel confronted.

Though wild boar are generally elusive (remember, they’re clever), they are frequently sighted all over Germany, even in cities. Also good to know: they are nocturnal creatures, so keep a close watch along forested roads when you’re driving in the evening.

Red deer

Though deer are incredibly common in most parts of the United States, they’re less ubiquitous in Germany. This relative scarcity makes it all the more interesting when you see one!

Red deer can frequently be seen in fields, so keep an eye out for doe herds or the occasional buck

if you’re walking along a ridge, or anywhere that gives you good long-distance views.

Wolves

During the past two thousand years, German wolves were hunted to the point that they were pretty much nonexistent by the year 2000. Apparently, no one was particularly fond of large, intelligent wild dogs that hunted in packs.

But things are slowly beginning to change, especially in the east. Wolves were reintroduced about twenty years ago, and their numbers have been steadily growing. There is no real indication that they’re anywhere near the western part of Germany, so you’ll have to travel if you want to see one in the wild.

Other creatures

Germany has a ton of cool birds, including hawks, falcons, and eagles (especially in the mountains). Barn owls and short-eared owls can often be seen in the KMC. Look for them at dusk. But even ordinary birds, like crows or magpies, can be highly entertaining to watch, especially if they’re battling over territory.

There are also many different kinds of smaller mammals that are unique to this side of the Atlantic, like European pine martens or the wonderfully largeeared European red squirrel.

1. Take a night walk in the city Winter has the power to turn even the most active among us into hibernators.

Fight the urge to sleep, especially when the sun goes down early!

Fortunately, Kaiserslautern has some great hibernation antidotes. One of the best involves bundling up and walking around the city center after dark. It’s like a place transformed. Gaslights, street lights, and shop lights illuminate pedestrian plazas. During the Christmas season, you get an added bonus of beautiful illumination.

Shopping isn’t required to make this a refreshing outing. Even if you’re only going to sneak peaks at shop windows, the time spent will be well worth it.

2. Check out the Christmas markets That’s right, Kaiserslautern has

markets, as in plural, as in more than one. The Fruchthalle, in the city center, offers a large variety of vendors, goods, and goodies. There is also a smaller outdoor market nearby.

In addition, lots of smaller villages surrounding Kaiserslautern offer their own Christmas markets.

3. Tour neighboring villages Speaking of KMC villages, many of them will be well worth your while, for a variety of reasons. Otterberg has a lovely downtown, an ancient church that’s worth a look, and a cute little plaza. Föckelberg offers incredible views of the surrounding area. Neuleningen has an always-open castle, narrow winding streets, and breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley.

The list goes on and on. If you live anywhere near Kaiserslautern, there are sure to be loads of hidden gems less than thirty minutes from your place. Ask your friends for tips. Ask your neighbors. Do a little research. And then get out there!

4. Hit the forests German forests are excellent for many reasons. During an era in which travel restrictions change on an almost-daily basis, one of the best things about forests are that they stay wonderfully the same.

Walk (almost) wherever you want. Go for free. Stroll for hours and hours.

You can get exercise, see new things, stumble across hidden treasures (like wild animals and great views). If you’re solo or with your family, you can also leave the mask off. Forests are everywhere around Kaiserlsautern, and they rock.

5. Try out winter specialties So when you’re done braving the great outdoors, there’s also this: Germans know

how to eat well and drink well during the holidays.

If you haven’t done so already, join them. Put down those microwave taquitos and frozen pizzas. Save that run to the food court. Find a butcher’s shop, a bakery, and a farmer’s market. Start simple by looking up German recipes online.

Discover mulled wine, or Pfalz wine, or German beer. Buy a bottle of sprudel and learn to love the bubbles.

Kaiserslautern has all of these things, in spades. If you’re going to stay local during the holidays, don’t be afraid to try living like a local.

It makes the season all the more magical!
