USAF’s newest Herc joins Ramstein fleet

by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A crew assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron crossed the Atlantic Ocean to retrieve a brand new C-130J Super Hercules from the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company production facility, in Marietta, Georgia, Nov. 29.

The C-130J, an upgraded version of the C-130 Hercules legacy model, adds 15 feet to the fuselage and increases usable space in the cargo compartment.

The new aircraft replaces one of 14 C-130Js in Ramstein’s fleet, helping avoid potential problems with the Air Force’s aging fleet.

Air Force travelers reminded of flat rate per diem policy JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIOLACKLAND, Texas — Some Air Force travelers may not be aware of a flat rate per diem policy established a few years ago that focused on extended temporary duty travel.

Congress instituted the flat rate in November 2014. The new policy reduced per diem from 100 percent to 75 percent for TDYs from 31 to 180 days and to 55 percent for TDYs over 180 days. What this means is for a trav-

eler whose TDY runs 31 to 180 days in length, the entire TDY per diem is paid at 75 percent. For a traveler whose TDY runs more than 180 days, the entire TDY per diem is paid at 55 percent.

The flat rate per diem policy was put in place to encourage travelers to take advantage of cost saving opportunities available for longterm travel. All government travelers performing TDY for more than 30 days in one location (continental U.S. and overseas continental U.S.) will receive a flat rate per diem.

The commercial lodging industry considers stays greater than 30 days to be “extended stays” and typically

offers reduced rates to ensure occupancy. Travelers may also consider furnished apartments or similar types of lodging which are typically cheaper than room rates in commercial lodging. Data analysis demonstrates the flat rate per diem adequately covers lodging, meals, and incidental expenses, more accurately reflecting actual costs incurred.

Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center finance officials encourage Air Force travelers whose temporary duty travel exceeds 30 days for their approving officials to be knowledgeable of the policy.

“We want to make sure Air Force travelers and approving officials understand the policy when creating travel authorizations and filing vouchers so that payments can be made timely and accurately,” said Col. Burke Beaumont, AFIMSC’s Resource Management Directorate deputy director.

The Defense Travel System features a program that routinely checks to ensure travelers comply with the policy that was initiated three years ago. Flat rate per diem information is available at the Defense Travel Management Office website at http:// www.defensetravel.dod.mil.

Mentoring the future Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Service member and civilian volunteers in the Kaiserslautern Military Community made strides to inspire and mentor children with special needs at the KMC Winter Special Olympics at the Vogelweh Military Complex, Dec. 1.

The group comes together every spring and winter to conduct the KMC Special Olympics. The events are intended to help build selfconfidence and camaraderie in the children who participate, said Master Sgt. Naomi James, 86th Medical Squadron quality and management superintendent.

“It brings everybody together,” said James, who helped organize the event.

“It’s giving back to the community and the kids. It gives them time together as well as friendly competition between the schools. But it’s all about them.”

James added that she was pleased with the positive effects on the children’s emotional well-being, saying that seeing the participants happy makes her happy.

“I couldn’t stop beaming,” she said. “Everybody was able to make it. They’re whole, they’re having fun— it’s just overwhelming.

The winter events featured bowling and arts and crafts. Children who participate come from various schools in the local area, both American and German. The KMC Special Olympics uses a buddy system in which participants are paired with volunteers for the day. The vol-

unteer accompanies the child and participates with the child in the events.

James added that not only are volunteers striving to help the children, but also making an effort to build bonds between Americans and locals.

“This gives us an opportunity to give back to them,” she said, referring to the German community. “To show our appreciation that we are here and we are together. We’re all people; it doesn’t matter what our background is, who we are, or where we come from.”

Tech. Sgt. Kristina Hailey, 86th Dental Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of the instrument processing center, served as the master of ceremonies for the KMC Winter Special Olympics. She expressed how happy she was to help with the event and hoped others would do the same in the future.

“They’re out there and they need our support,” she said. “I love to work with kids. They have so much energy and a useful spirit. They would just tell you how it is.”

Hailey also said she was impressed by the intelligence displayed by some of the children and was amazed by the optimism displayed by the participants.

“The kids have so much talent,” she said. “They enjoy having a new buddy and meeting new people. They have hobbies just like us. It’s just amazing — the creativity and imagination they have.”

Hailey encouraged KMC members to step up and volunteer for Special Olympics events, saying she would do it again if given the chance.

ROSC luncheon

The Ramstein Officers’ Spouses’ Club will hold their monthly luncheon Wednesday at the Ramstein Officers’ Club. Toys for tots drive

The Marines assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion East at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center will host their annual Toys for Tots drive through Dec. 19 to collect new, unwrapped toys throughout the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Weapon-like toys or cash will not be accepted. The toys will be donated to military families through Army Community Services as well as needy families in the local community through the German Red Cross and Streetkidz International. Toys can be dropped off in Toys for Tots boxes at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Mall on Ramstein, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center dining facility, USO Warrior Center on Landstuhl and Armstrong Club on Vogelweh until Dec. 19. Free layaway at KMCC

Military members, families and retirees can get a head start on holiday shopping with fee-free layaway from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. The Kaiserslautern Military Community Center Exchange will waive the $3 service fee for items that are placed on layaway and paid for by Dec. 24, including toys and bikes.

Purchases of $25 or more are eligible for the layaway plan. A deposit of 15 percent is required to hold items on layaway. Shoppers can visit customer service at the KMCC Exchange for complete program details and eligibility information.

Green Dot training

Have you taken your annual Green Dot training? If not it is not

too late to sign up. This annual training increases awareness and prevention of interpersonal violence, to include sexual assault, domestic and interpersonal violence, and suicide. We are providing additional training opportunities in order to spread the Green Dot creed and culture to the entire community. This year, You have two choices for your training. If you completed the Green Dot training last year you only need to take the Green Dot Refresher training (about 1 hour). PMEL Airmen keep Europe calibrated

by Airman 1st Class Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Most tools are designed to do one thing and to do that one thing perfectly. From flight systems in an aircraft measuring altitude, to the scales used to measure the weight of a vehicle, everything is calibrated to perform its function perfectly. When those items start to fail, the mission is affected and something needs to be done about it.

That’s where the 86th Maintenance Squadron’s test measurement diagnostic equipment flight, better known as PMEL, comes into play. These Airmen bring tools and items back to their factory specifications to ensure the mission is completed properly and according to specification.

The mission of the PMEL flight is to ensure safe, accurate, reliable, and traceable measurement equipment to the warfighter.

The PMEL flight at Ramstein is one of a limited number of locations in the Air Force. Due to the environmental requirements set by the Air Force Metrology and Calibration Program, items are sent from installations from all over U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Central Command, and U.S. Transportation Command, for calibration.

“The PMEL flight supports and maintains an inventory of over 14,000 tools and measurement items,” said Master Sgt. David Valdez, 86th MXS laboratory section chief.

Airmen who train as PMEL technicians undergo an eight month technical training school before they get to their first base.

Once at their first base, they continue to train.

“The biggest challenge is getting the newest Airmen trained to a point where they are proficient enough to perform the mission without continued oversight,” said Valdez. “This usually takes anywhere from eight to 12 months.”

Calibrations are accomplished by Airmen trained in sections specializing in different functionalities.

The K1/K8 sections calibrate electrical items that deal with

voltage, resistance, current, and capacitance. Some of the items include counter measure tests which test the flare systems on the C-130J Super Hercules.

The K3/K4 sections calibrate items that deal with time, frequency, power, and waveform analysis. These items can include tactical air navigation systems both onboard the aircraft and on the ground.

The bulk of the work done by the PMEL flight is calibrating test equipment that falls under the K5/K6 section, which are items that deal with force, torque, pressure, temperature, along with some specialty items. These items can include torque wrenches used by maintainers, to scales used by the Office of Special Investigations.

“It is paramount that my job be performed correctly, as the measurement tools I certify are trusted by Airmen out on the flight line,” said Senior Airman

On top of performing calibrations on tools and measurement items, Airmen are also required to determine the faults of a broken item, before sending the item back to the owning squadron.

“The work the flight performs has far reaching impacts,” said Chief Master Sgt. Donald Ledbetter, 86th MXS TMDE flight chief. “As a pilot glides into a landing, they need to know their altitude. They have an altimeter in the cockpit, but how do they know the altimeter is correct? They know because a crew chief has checked it.

How does the crew chief know their equipment functions correctly? Because they brought it to our flight.”

With a rotating inventory of more than 14,000 items, PMEL technicians keep themselves busy, and Europe stays calibrated.

Ramstein kicks off holiday season with Christmas tree lighting

As the countdown to Christmas Day drew closer, members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community and local officials from RamsteinMiesenbach gathered to celebrate the lighting of the base Christmas Tree, Nov. 29.

“The annual Christmas tree lighting means a lot to us,” said Brig. Gen. Richard Moore Jr., 86th Airlift Wing commander. “The tree was donated in 2010, and has grown, much like our ever-growing relationship with the local community.”

The night began with a musical program from the Ramstein combined choir. Families from the KMC and local community sang Christmas carols with the choir to get into the spirit of Christmas.

After the musical program,

Chaplain Erik Nelson, 86th Airlift Wing deputy wing chaplain, gave remarks before the group moved to the traffic roundabout where the tree is located.

Members took photos and children jumped around as soon as they saw the giant Christmas presents sitting under the tree.

After a short speech, Moore gathered all the children to jointly turn on the Christmas tree lights.

As soon as the lights lit up the festive roundabout, sirens blared and emergency lights flared as Santa Claus made his appearance in a firetruck.

Santa walked around and greeted the crowd before retreating to the Ramstein Officers’ Club to take photos with the children.

This marked the seventh year for the annual Christmas Tree lighting, and much like how the tree has grown, Moore hopes to see the relationship with the local community to continually grow stronger.

said Col. Joseph Wenckus, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, “Replacing older aircraft rotationally allows us to balance out the number of older and newer planes in any given location across the C-130J enterprise, which strengthens the force.”

The concept, according to Air Mobility Command, is called “Enterprise Fleet Management” and allows extended aircraft life by rotating aircraft amongst units across the Air Force. Locally, this means the new aircraft will replace a C-130J that will transfer to Yokota Air Base, Japan.

Due to a challenging operational environment or increased requirements driven by mission demands, there is the potential for the lifespan of these aircraft to be prematurely shortened, said Wenckus.

“With missions, required maintenance, and wear and tear more evenly distributed across all Air Force units, we are able to better maintain Ramstein’s C-130J fleet and guarantee world-class

tactical airlift to two combatant commands,” said Wenckus.

According to Lockheed Martin, the aircraft is built on the legacy of the basic C-130 design, however, the C-130J features a large, unobstructed, fully-pressurized cargo hold that can be rapidly reconfigured for carrying troops, stretchers, passengers, or airdrop of troops and equipment into battle zones.

The aircraft also features upgraded avionics, improved lift capacity, superior climb performance, and long-range landing field capabilities.

“The avionics are astronomically better in this aircraft than the older legacy model,” said Maj. Kyle Bucher, 37th AS C-130J pilot. “It has improved performance, it’s faster, burns less fuel, carries more, and requires fewer crew members.”

The versatile aircraft is used across the Air Force for medical evacuation, delivering humanitarian aid, airdropping equipment and personnel, cargo delivery, firefighting, aerial refueling,

aerial spray, and arctic support missions.

With continuous production longer than any other military aircraft, the C-130J has earned a reputation as a workhorse ready for any mission, anytime, anywhere.

The 37th AS provides air support to U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, ensuring tactical airlift assets and mission readiness for the theater, said 1st Lt. Jane Marlow, 37th AS C-130J pilot.

“The thing I love the most about the Herc is the mission,” Marlow said.

“It’s the sound of home. Whether it’s picking personnel up from deployment, bringing beans and bullets to the troops that need them, or dropping Christmas care packages to deployed locations, I believe the C-130J is the best aircraft in the Air Force.”

The crew traveled across three countries and three states within the U.S. in one week to pick up Ramstein’s new aircraft, having the unique opportunity to tour Lockheed’s warehouse facility at their headquarters in Marietta.

Defender Café grand opening on ROB

“This ribbon cutting ceremony is a celebration for food service as we formally introduce the Kaiserslautern Military Community to the Defender Café and recognize the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command’s continued dedication to food service excellence, to the Soldiers, family members and the civilians of the community,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gayann Eccleston, command food advisory assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 10th AAMDC. Eccleston said there are several unique things about the new dining facility.

“There are several selfserve bars that are available to the customer such as a pizza bar with calzones that are made with fresh dough daily by members of our staff,” she said.

new dining facility is bigger than the last and offers more improvements.

“In this new dining facility, we hope to bring a greater variety for the Soldiers, improving the environment and the morale by offering them better quality and versatile food choices in the hopes of making them feel more comfortable in a restaurant environment.”

Special guest speaker Col. David Shank, commander of the 10th AAMDC, thanked everyone for coming out to the ceremony.

“This is a big day. It took us over two years to move about 400 meters,” Shank said. “Construction began in 2015, and today is that day that we will cut that ribbon and will officially open the Defender Café. It does not

go unnoticed the hard work [done] by the food service employees in the variety of uniforms.”

The Defender Café is run by a staff of 10 military personnel, 20 contracted cooks and around 18 dining facility attendants, Eccleston said.

Hours of operation are: Breakfast 7 to 9 a.m.; lunch 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and dinner 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Red Cabbage & Bread Dumplings Over the next weeks, I will be presenting a fall menu for 4 people with a recipe each week. Happy cooking!

Red Cabbage

(ingredients for 4 people) • 1 large jar of red cabbage (Rotkraut on the economy) • 1 large apple, peeled, cut in thin slices • ½ tablespoon margarine • ½ tablespoon lard • 1 tablespoon cherry marmalade • 3 medium onions peeled and finely sliced • 1 cup apple juice and 1 cup red wine if serving adults • 2 cups apple juice if serving children • Season with salt and pepper • ½ teaspoon sugar

Airmen scrub the aircraft with a cleaning solution before they are sprayed down with hot water.

In a pot heat margarine and lard on medium high heat. Add onions and apples and let it simmer 4-5 minutes. Add red cabbage from the jar.

If only adults are eating the cabbage, you can add red wine and apple juice for 2 cups of liquid.

If you have children, you can use all apple juice.

After one hour add the cherry marmalade. Let is simmer for 1.5 hours so that the flavors mix throughout the cabbage. Season to match your taste with salt and pepper.

Bread Dumplings

• • • • • • • • •

(ingredients for 4 people) 6-8 dried bread rolls 2-3 cups milk 2 eggs 2 tablespoons bread crumbs Salt and ground white Pepper ½ cup chopped parsley ½ cup diced bacon ½ cup diced onions 1 teaspoon margarine

Slice dried bread. Put in bowl with seasonings. In a pan, heat margarine and roast bacon and onions until onions are glassy and you can smell the bacon. Add to the bread rolls mixture along with chopped parsley. Heat the milk in a pot. Pour it over the bread rolls. Let it sit 30 minutes to cool. Then stir in eggs. Form dumplings.

Heat a large pot of salted water. When the water is boiling, add a small dumpling. If it doesn’t fall apart, you know your mixture is the right consistency. If it falls apart, you need to add more bread crumbs. Add all dumplings to boiling water once you are sure you have the consistency correct. After they rise to the surface, reduce the heat to let them simmer for 15-20 minutes.

They will be ready to serve immediately.

The use of such devices, such as cordless phones, wireless routers, and baby monitors, could interfere with critical communications systems supporting fire departments, emergency services, banks, rail systems, medical equipment, or security systems.

The best way to tell if an electronic device is approved for use in Germany is by looking for a specific symbol. U.S. manufactured electronic devices prominently display the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) logo, but in Europe the device must have a Conformité Européene (CE)

logo. If the device does not contain a logo, do not use the device. The logo can be found on the box, user manual, or the device itself.

Disruptive interference has recently been discovered in Vogelweh housing by U.S. Air Force Spectrum Management personnel and the Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA, German Telecommunications Agency) when investigating a complaint filed by a German telecommunications company to U.S. European Command. The BNetzA and USAF Spectrum Management personnel are prepared to conduct future checks, so again, residents are reminded to check their electronic wireless devices for the logo to ensure they are approved for use in Germany.

‘Wave of Light’ to support those experiencing loss

Maj. Mark Rendon, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Family and Life Chaplain, will be hosting a “Wave of Light Celebration” at the Java Café on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Dec. 12.

The celebration is to honor pregnancy and infant loss babies by celebrating the joy they brought to families across the Kaiserslautern Military Community and is an opportunity to join bereaved parents, families and friends and commemorate all babies who passed away.

Even though October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month — where many organizations throughout the world conduct events recognizing stillbirth, miscarriage, neonatal death and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and the official month of the “Wave of Light” — the Rheinland-Pfalz Family and Life Chaplain felt this was something parents needed and did not want to wait until October 2018 to help support area families in need.

“There was an event in Landstuhl in October,” Rendon said. “But, I wanted to give the opportunity to families that either didn’t know about the event or those that didn’t think they were ready to attend. I wanted to give them a chance to share their story.”

This celebration is to help break the silence around the death of babies by talking about individual experiences that could potentially help others that have gone through something similar, cope with their pain.

“My wife and I have lost three of

our own babies, and subsequently after each loss there was little to no support,” Rendon said. “Oftentimes what happens is there is support at the hospital and you leave and you feel alone.”

The Wave of Light is a creative concept developed by English and American organizations, based on progressive candle lightings all around the world. The thought is people across the globe would light a candle at 7 p.m. for at least an hour, and as the light is being extinguished

in one time zone, a new time zone will take on the duty of lighting a candle causing a continuous wave.

“I think the lives that have been lost through pregnancy are just as important as the old parents that you lay to rest,” Rendon said. “Maybe their life was short but there’s value in all those little moments, and that’s important.”

The loss of a child can cause stress on families and a strain on relationships. There are resources that will be made available to families during the event.

“Starting in January, I’m going to start a support group, one evening a month for family members to come and talk and know that they are not alone,” Rendon said. “I’m passionate about what I do, I want to love people and I want to help people through their journey.”

Buzzards head home after Blue Flag 17

Story and photos by Senior Airman Abby L. Finkel U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa Public Affairs UVDA AIR FORCE BASE, Israel — After two weeks of flying missions, Blue Flag 2017, the third iteration of the Israeli-hosted exercise, wrapped up at Uvda Air Force Base, Israel, Nov. 16.

Participants from seven nations hosted by Israel, including approximately 200 U.S. Air Force Airmen and seven F-16C Fighting Falcons from 31st Fighter Wing in Aviano, Italy, are now headed back to their home stations.

The multinational live-fly exercise,

the largest of its kind hosted by Israel, was aimed at strengthening military partnerships and improving strategic communication between the participating nations.

“Anytime we participate in a multinational exercise with many different partners and players, it builds our interoperability,” said Brig. Gen. Lance Landrun, 31st Fighter Wing commander. “It builds our ability to communicate, it builds our common understanding of culture and it builds our common understanding of capabilities and tactics.”

This strengthening of partner forces didn’t just happen in the air — it also

happened on the ground and in the planning stages of each sortie.

“What we went for when we designed this exercise was that we wanted to find the common ground for each air force,” said an Israeli air force pilot, “which means that when we planned our missions we did it together, and everyone shared their way of how they fight each mission.”

This year, Blue Flag participants were able to gain even more insight into how partner nations operate as several new countries, including India, joined the exercise for the first time.

“As a professional force it is our duty to keep improving ourselves,”

said an Indian air force spokesperson.

“Here we saw a lot of countries that have varied combat experience, especially Israel, from which we could learn.This is a place we could all learn from each other’s combat experiences,” he continued. “We are friends from different countries, learning to operate together.”

The U.S. Air Force regularly participates in multinational training exercises and has participated in all three iterations of Israel’s Blue Flag.

Exercises like this further strengthen the relationships between attending nations and also promote regional peace and security.

Bryant was born in Lax Kw’alaams, a native village on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. He is part of the Gitando Clan, bearing the raven crest. Bryant moved to Europe nearly 20 years ago and currently resides in Austria. He is the only Tsimshian on this side of the world.

“I have nobody to dance with here.

There are no Northwest Coast people here. There is only one,” Bryant said.

He explained that he was grateful for the chance to share his songs and dance with Americans here in Europe.

In fact, this event was the first time he had ever set foot on a military base in his life.

His performance won’t soon be forgotten. Audience members had the

opportunity to hear Bryant speak in Sm’álgyax, a dialect of the Tsimshian language, meaning “real tongue,” play a handmade drum, perform a mask dance and more.

After Bryant’s performance, Equal Opportunity Adviser to Regional Health Command-Europe Sgt. First Class Jason World Turner spoke to the audience. Growing up as both Lakota and Dakota Sioux, World Turner felt ashamed of his heritage for a long time. He explained that as he grew older, he came to realize that he was wrong to feel that way. He now embraces his background and speaks proudly of it with hopes that others will be proud to share theirs as well.

“I see that [people] are split on how we view other people of different races and ethnicities, but those like myself are optimistic and try to see the good in all.”

His determination to spread awareness and positivity is fitting of his original name — “He Who Turns the World, So That All People May Live” — before it was shortened to World Turner.

The observance concluded with LRMC Commander Col. Timothy Hudson presenting both Bryant and World Turner with certificates of appreciation for their efforts. A Soldier from the audience gave Bryant one of the patches on her uniform, as a token of gratitude and a keepsake from USAG RP and LRMC.

Sankt Wendel combines tradition with medieval market

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The city of Sankt Wendel will hold its Christmas market combined with a medieval market Saturday to Dec. 17.

More than 160 little decorated houses and booths will offer arts and crafts, gift ideas and regional culinary specialties 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The medieval market will feature vendors in historical costumes, who sell their merchandise. Craftsmen such as basket makers, lantern makers, blacksmiths, potters, turners and soap makers will dem-

onstrate their work and ask visitors to try to do the same.

Jugglers, dancers, singers, musicians and a magician will entertain in the streets and on stage. Camp groups demonstrate how people lived, worked, ate and celebrated in the Middle Ages.

Every afternoon at 4 p.m., the Three Holy Kings from the Orient and their camels will go through the center of town. Back at their camp they will perform the Christmas story in colorful scenes.

Gingerbread: traditional Christmas cookie with long history

“Lebkuchen,” or gingerbread, is one of the most popular, oldest and beloved Christmas cookies in Germany.

A big variety is available – there are lebkuchen in different shapes, with chocolate, nuts or marmelade filling.

It’s not a clear thing as to where the name “Lebkuchen” comes from. It has nothing to do with the word “leben,” to live. It most likely stems from the Latin word “libum” meaning flat cake or sacrifice cake.

In early times, people sacrificed to gods what was most important to them: bread, also called “Laib.” Throughout the years “Laibkuchen” turned into “Lebkuchen.”

Lebkuchen go back to Teutonic times. Teutones thought that the predecessor of lebkuchen, the “Honigkuchen” or honey cake, had magical powers and helped keep bad spirits within bounds.

Also, the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks believed that honey came from the gods and had magical and healing powers. They took honey cakes to the battle and placed them as burial objects into Egyptian kings’ graves.

In the Middle Ages, gingerbread was used as a means of payment. Vassals paid their feudal duty with the specialty, and dukes and civil servants were bribed with it. It was known for bringing good luck at wedding and baptism ceremonies. Gingerbread was difficult to obtain by most people, because it was a valuable specialty made of expensive ingredients.

“Lebkuchen” or gingerbread is one of the most popular Christmas cookies in Germany.

a monastery near Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria mentions the “Pfefferkuchen,” pepper cake, for the first time.

In 1293, the first gingerbread baking guild was documented in Silesia. In the 14th century, the making of gingerbread became popular in Munich, Frankfurt, Basel, Vienna and Nuremberg, which is famous for its “Nürnberger Lebkuchen.”

Beekeepers from a little town near Nuremberg helped bring fame and a good reputation to the town. With plenty of fir and pine trees, oak trees and linden, sloe trees, hazelnut bushes, spurge-laurels and heather growing in the forests near Nuremberg, enough nectar was available for the bees. The socalled “Zeidler,” forest and house beekeepers, founded a large guild, and harvested the honey from honeycombs in tree holes or crevices.

At that time, honey was the only existing sweetener.

Due to worldwide commercial connections of local merchants, the bakers of ginger-

bread were able to receive all necessary ingredients — pepper, ginger, cinnamon and other spices.

In the Nuremberg area, the beekeepers maintained about 50 farms and in 1350, Emperor Karl IV gave them the privilege of being the only people allowed to harvest the honey in his forests.

The beekeepers wore their own costumes, crossbow and arrows and were the emperor’s bodyguards. They also maintained their own court of justice where they handled all crimes committed in the forests and against the beehives.

In 1796, Prussian occupants limited this jurisdiction, and three years later, they took it away totally.

Today the making of gingerbread is still considered an art clothed in secrets. The modern production still relies on old recipes that masters have passed down from generation to generation.

Gingerbread is a must when arranging a Christmas cookie plate in Germany.

Ramstein’s Christmas market offers gift ideas, food, entertainment

This year’s gluehwein mug displays the Ramstein train station, which will be 150 years old in 2018.

Santa Claus will pass out sweets and little gifts at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, the duet Unerhoert will present Christmassy music 7 to 10 p.m., and Sunday, Voice and Strings will perform 5 to 7 p.m.

The Cinnamon and Waffles Market will be open 6 to 10 p.m. today, 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m.

Sunday. Stores will have an extended opening time Saturday; they will stay open until 6 p.m.

Santa Claus makes his appearance at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Ramstein-Miesenbach Cinnamon and Waffles Market.

Ramstein-Miesenbach will sponsor its 13th annual Christmas market called “Cinnamon and Waffles Market” today, Saturday and Sunday on the local Marktplatz in the center of town.

The market fountain will be turned it into an Advent wreath.

Next to it, vendors in decorated wooden booths will sell a variety of merchandise such as Christmas decorations, handcrafted angels, candles, knitted items, jewelry and other gift ideas. The local Kolping youth group will serve Flammkuchen, tarte flambée (similar to pizza). Other associations will offer potato, cinnamon, bacon and sweet waffles, as well as bratwurst, roast pork and French fries.

Each year, visitors will be able to buy the mug in which gluehwein will be served.

This year’s motif will show the Ramstein train station and a steam train because of the 150th anniversary of the train route Landstuhl to Kusel, and the 150th anniversary of the Ramstein train station in 2018.

Christmas market activities will begin at 6 p.m. today. Mayor Ralf Hechler will hold an opening speech and welcome all visitors at 8 p.m. The Brigger Christmas Wind Section will entertain the audience with Christmas songs until 10 p.m.

Café Goldinger is a lovely place located in Landstuhl. For 50 Years it has been in the same location, Master Ludwig Goldinger and Paul Goldinger are part of the family. In 1974 the company expanded and enriched their selection of delicious cakes, chocolates and the selection of confectionary and cheese, as well as fine pastries and other creations.

Goldingers sports a beautiful terrace and interior that is both relaxing and comforting, whether you are there for their wonderful breakfasts and special lunches or having a relaxing cup of coffee. They offer a large selection of rich coffee in their shop since 1967.

The menu includes great sandwiches, daily specials, a wide range of homemade bakery products, numerous chocolates, berliners, and pastries. Family Goldinger is on the premises most days and a very friendly and helpful staff is there to welcome you always. All credit cards are accepted at both their café and hotel. Hours of operation are 6:30 to 18:30 Monday through Saturday and Sunday 8:00 to 18:30. Tuesday is the only closed day.
