by Terri Moon Cronk Department of Defense News Military OneSource’s MilTax forum opened for business yesterday as the IRS began accepting tax returns, said an official with Defense Department Military Community and Family Policy. Kelly Smith, program analyst with MC&FP, said the biggest factor DOD wants its service members and their families to know is that MilTax is an option for them when they’re considering how to file for this tax season; the deadline is April 18. To reach MilTax, go to MilTax: Free Military Tax Return Preparation Services, Military OneSource at https://www.militaryonesource.mil/ financial-legal/tax-resource-center/miltax-military-tax-services/, or call 800-342-9647.
“We know there are many other tax products out there, but MilTax is 100 percent free of charge [without] rank or pay restrictions,” Smith said. Service members are entitled to the tax-filing benefit they’ve earned and can use MilTax’s filing software and consult with a MilTax consultant even if they have just a question. The MilTax consultants are well-versed in military-specific tax situations,
she said, noting that MilTax results are guaranteed. For example, the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act is an issue that comes up quite often, Smith said. “There are rules that military spouses need to know when it comes to filing their taxes, and there are some eligibility requirements [under the MSRRA], and it applies when a spouse lives in a state different from his or her residency state.” Because military families move often, there are certain qualifying military moving expenses that can apply to filing taxes, she said. One qualifier involves moving household goods and personal effects, and the other is reasonable travel and lodging expenses, she added. And particularly applicable to spouses is self-employment, otherwise known as working in the gig community, Smith said. Operating a small self-business requires a Schedule C tax form, she added. The Child Tax Credit can also come into play for 2021 tax filing, Smith said. According to Military OneSource, the child tax credit maximum amount of credit is $2,000 per qualifying child and is refundable up to $1,400. The bill also includes a temporary $500 nonrefundable credit for other qualifying dependents. As part of the American Rescue Plan to help Americans recover
financially from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 child tax credit was expanded to $3,600 for children ages 5 and younger, and $3,000 for children ages 6-17. Eligible taxpayers will receive monthly payments totaling half of their 2021 child tax credit from July 15, 2021 through the end of the year. Taxpayers can claim the other half when they file their 2021 tax return. For more, visit Advance Child Tax Credit 2021, Military OneSource at https://www.militaryonesource. mil/financial-legal/tax-resourcecenter/special-tax-considerations/ advance-child-tax-credit-2021/.
For those who are deployed overseas during the tax season and need an extension to file, Smith said DOD wants its service members to focus on their mission and not worry about filing tax forms. The IRS automatically extends tax deadlines for U.S. Armed Forces personnel deployed to a combat zone or in support of operations in a qualified hazardous duty area. More information on tax extensions can be found at: https://www. militaryonesource.mil/financiallegal/tax-resource-center/specialtax-considerations/ins-and-outsof-filing-military-taxes-when-youare-deployed/.

In the revision, workplace access is restricted to vaccinated, recovered or tested employees. In light of the revised act, we want to remind our communities that testing capabilities at military treatment facilities are reserved for official purposes and individuals who present medical symptoms. Unit Leaders who have questions regarding the revised act should reference Force Health Protection Guidance (Supplement 23) which established COVID-19 screening testing for unvaccinated individuals. Story and photo by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron Vehicle Registration office recently created two quick response codes to assist their customers at Kapaun Air Station, Jan. 24. The QR codes provide customers with information they need when scheduling their appointments and virtually reserving a place in line with an estimated time until they can be seen. “The QR codes are a really big deal for us,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Brandon Jackson, 569 USFPS vehicle registration clerk. “It allows customers to check what they need to bring with them to mitigate issues and ensure our customers can leave here with their cars and the information they need when they come again.” Jackson said the most common mistake made during the registration process is vehicle insurance. Unfortunately, the vehicle registration office cannot find out about potential issues until they run the customer’s social security number. Jackson said with the QR code the customers can come prepared and are much less likely to be turned away. The second QR code keeps customers from standing out in front of the office and lets them know when they can be seen. This new innovation helps everyone save time and ensures customers can get what they need and get on with their day. “We’ve made another QR code, which allows customers to check-in on their mobile devices,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Vincent

QR code gets you rolling
A 569th United States Forces Police Squadron Vehicle Registration clerks look over a customer’s paperwork at Kapaun Air Station, Jan. 24. The 569 USFPS created two QR codes to increase efficiency and save time.
Freigo, 569 USFPS vehicle registration clerk. “The app lets them know how long until their appointment begins. This means they can use their time more efficiently and save their place in line so they don’t have to stand out in front of vehicle registration for an hour or more.” Jackson believes the QR codes
provide more than just a resource for customers, but peace of mind. He knows it makes his customers’ lives easier and if the vehicle registration office works more efficiently Airmen can accomplish the mission and take care of their families. “The QR codes are more than just a modern solution to me,”
Jackson said. “They are a way for us to help people. If service members and their families get their cars they can go out and travel, take care of their business and get to work. Their personally owned vehicles help accomplish the mission and increase quality for members of the community.”

For the first time in more than seven years, Airmen and Soldiers assigned to the Kaiserslautern Military Community can once again wear uniforms off base. Out of an abundance of caution due to threats at the time, U.S. European Command in 2014 ordered all troops serving on the continent to limit wearing uniforms off base to the maximum extent possible. The original mandate applied across all of EUCOM, meaning even areas identified as low-threat felt the impacts of the blanket policy. Last year, EUCOM delegated the approval authority to each service to determine its offbase uniform policy. U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Randall Reed, Third Air Force commander, authorized wing commanders in Germany, Italy and the
United Kingdom to implement local uniform policy changes at their discretion with an effective date of Feb. 1. U.S. Army Maj. Gen. James Smith, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commander, also issued a change in policy effective Feb. 1 for Soldiers stationed in the area and other parts of Europe. The uniform policy changes are a long-awaited return to normal after months of careful analysis and discussion by the services, providing service members more flexibility in their daily lives. The policies permit both services to wear military uniforms between a person’s residence and official duty locations, at offbase establishments including restaurants and cafés, barbershops, gas stations, drugstores, quick convenience stops at shops, and other similar locations within the local area of one’s commute.
Check us out on
However, some locations and services remain prohibited in uniform for both services including off-base bars, nightclubs, dance clubs, and hookah lounges. Additionally, service members are prohibited from consuming alcohol off base while in uniform. The Air Force and Army policies contain some minor differences in permitted activities. Personnel should review the policy letters carefully and check with unit supervisors if they have questions. Air Force leaders and security forces personnel have worked in tandem to ensure this policy change implements procedures that best balance risk, the welfare of Airmen, and bolster community relations. The uniform policy will be evaluated on a regular basis to determine if changes are required based on the threat and risk at the time. “This policy opens the doors to many great new opportunities for both our service members and host nation partners here in the KMC,” said Tech. Sgt. Jacob Petersen, 86th Security Forces Squadron Antiterrorism/Force Protection noncommissioned officer in charge. “It is extremely vital with this new freedom of movement within the local area that all personnel continue to make smart decisions while off installation and keep operations security in the forefront of their minds. Remember that a solid OPSEC and Antiterrorism Program requires every individual to maintain awareness, practice personal security measures, and report suspicious activity.” As Airmen do stateside, they should be prepared to practice safety and security precautions, and report any suspicious activity through the Eagle Eyes program.

AETC continues to develop Airmen, celebrates 80th anniversary
Chief of Staff of the Air Corps Lt. Gen. Hap Arnold visits San Antonio to speak to Airmen in training at the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center, Dec. 1942. The center is now Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, and home to the Air Education and Training Command. U.S. Air Force photos
by Air Education and Training Command Public Affairs Members of Air Education and Training Command celebrated the command’s 80th anniversary recently, honoring the Air Force’s oldest major command and all the students and trainees who have been recruited, trained and educated at First Command. Throughout 2022, members at AETC have plans to celebrate the 80th milestone for AETC with various events around the command. The first event to honor the anniversary was Jan. 22, when Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., provided remarks virtually. “The familiar torch of knowledge has been continuously passed and still lights our way in a complex world,” Brown said. “Everything the men and women of AETC do underpins the Air Force’s critical role in national defense and global security. We must never forget AETC is where we started, and where we came from. Your history is the Air Force’s history, and you chart our important path into the future.” Other events planned during 2022 to highlight the anniversary are the Wings Over Columbus Air Show and STEM Expo at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi, March 26-27; Fiesta San Antonio, March 3-April 10; the Great Texas Air Show at JBSARandolph, April 23-24; and the Legacy of Liberty Air Show and Open House at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, May 7-8. “For 80 years, AETC has taken America’s sons and daughters – young men and women who have volunteered to serve their country in difficult times – and forged and developed them into professional Airmen and Guardians,” said Lt. Gen. Brad Webb, AETC commander. “Our legacy then and now is fighting through challenges. We must continue to invest in learning opportunities that allow Airmen to learn the way they live. Accelerating change starts with an empowered workforce that has the foundational competencies, the right
skills and the drive to innovate.” Throughout AETC’s history, training to develop Airmen, and most recently Guardians, has been a priority. “Our people, are our greatest weapon system, no matter the decade,” said Chief Master Sgt. Erik Thompson, AETC command chief master sergeant. “We celebrate in the fact that nearly all Airmen begin their careers in the First Command and continue to return to us throughout their careers for their development. We take pride in knowing that our people programs keep Airmen ready to meet the challenges of today and the future.” Key AETC historical events • Feb. 20, 1910 – Wright Brothers open flying school at the future site of Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama • March 2, 1910 – Lt. Actor, filmmaker Robert Duvall was Navy ‘brat’ turned soldier by David Vergun Department of Defense News

Actor and filmmaker Robert Duvall grew up a Navy brat — an endearing term for a child whose parent is on active military duty. Duvall’s father, Navy Rear Adm. William Howard Duvall, wanted his son to attend the Naval Academy and have a career in the Navy. But that was not to be. Instead, Duvall enlisted in the Army in 1953, just after the end of the Korean War. He served for two years and was stationed at Camp Gordon (now Fort Gordon), Georgia. After his enlistment was up, he was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of private first class. Duvall then used his GI Bill benefits to attend acting classes at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. Classmates included future actors Dustin Hoffman, James Caan and fellow veteran Gene Hackman. In 1962, his big-screen break came playing Boo Radley, alongside actor Gregory Peck, in “To Kill A Mockingbird.” In the years and decades that followed, Duvall would appear in many acclaimed films. Those with military themes include: • Director Robert Altman’s 1970 dark comedy “M*A*S*H.” in which Duvall played Army Maj. Frank Burns during the Korean War. The movie spawned a highly successful TV series. • Director Lewis John Carlino’s
1979 movie “The Great Santini” in which Duvall played main character Marine Corps Lt. Col. Wilbur “Bull” P. Meechum. The film was set in 1962, and Meechum is an F-4 Phantom jet naval aviator. • Director Ronald F. Maxwell’s “Gods and Generals.” Duvall played Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in the 2003 film. Duval’s father was a descendant of Lee. • Director Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 film “Apocalypse Now” in which Duvall played Army Lt. Col. William “Bill” Kilgore, the commander of 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, during the Vietnam War. In “Apocalypse Now,” Duvall’s character was a composite of several real-life soldiers, including Army Col. John Stockton, the actual commander of 1st Squadron, 9th Cav. Reg.; Army Lt. Gen. James F. Hollingsworth, who served in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967; and Army Maj. Gen. George Patton IV, son of famed World War II veteran Army Gen. George S. Patton. Duvall once said that he was upset that a scene where Kilgore saves the life of a Vietnamese baby during the beach assault was cut by Coppola, as he felt that it added to the complexity of his character. During his spare time, Duvall, now 91, sometimes visits Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals across America to thank injured veterans for their service.

USAFE supports NATO Enhanced Air Policing Photos by Staff Sgt. Megan Beatty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Two F-15E Strike Eagles, assigned to the 4th Fighter Wing from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, NC, are parked at Ämari Air Base, Estonia, Jan. 26. The F-15E Strike Eagles, along with Belgian F-16s, are deployed to Ämari Air Base in support of a NATO enhanced Air Policing mission. NATO’s enhanced Air Policing missions demonstrate solidarity, collective resolve and its ability to adapt and scale its defensive missions and deterrence posture in response to the evolving security situation facing the alliance.

Operations conducted with U.S. forces, allies and partners demonstrate the U.S.’ commitment to strong relationships that are necessary for peace and stability in the European theater.

Ämari Air Base is hosting the Belgian and U.S. Air Forces to conduct an enhanced air policing mission for NATO. Enhanced air policing was introduced in 2014 with the goal of assuring north eastern and south eastern allies demonstrate the collective resolve of allies and demonstrate the defensive nature of NATO to deter adversaries from aggression or the threat of aggression against NATO allies.

Members of the 336 FGS and 336th Fighter Squadron are deployed to Ämari AB to support a NATO enhanced air policing mission. Although the air policing mission has been executed continuously since 1961, frequent training and exercising is critical to ensure NATO forces remain fully prepared. This allows for practicing multi-domain operations during air policing missions and exercises to develop allied forces and strengthen the alliance. The 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson AFB is home to two operational and two training F-15E fighter squadrons, making it one of the largest fighter wings in the U.S. Air Force.

Security deposits for your rental in Germany
By Find-It-Guide.com
It is likely that you will be renting a place to live in while you are here in Germany, which means you will be dealing with a security deposit. The amount you may need to come up with can be substantial, especially when you take into account the current exchange rate. The amount of the deposit could be two months rent, but can be as high as three months rent. It cannot be more than three months rent by German law and it can be spread out over three months if you are able to negotiate that with your landlord. Additionally, your landlord is required to put the security amount in an interest bearing account. This must be a separate account from the landlord’s account where the rent is deposited so you are protected if the landlord runs into any financial problems (like bankruptcy). Assuming there are no damages to the house or apartment, the landlord is required to pay the tenant the interest that was accrued during the time of the rental. If you stay in your dwelling for a number of years, this could actually amount to a decent sum of money (although nothing anyone will get rich from). When it comes time to move out, the landlord will evaluate the rental to see what repairs may need to be done. Once the final inspection is done, the landlord must get a list of the items that need to be repaired in what is described as “a responsible time.” This is where it can get a little difficult if you are moving into a new place and need that security deposit returned quickly. “A responsible time” by German law says it could be anywhere from three to twelve months if assessing the damage is complicated. If it is straightforward and there are no real issues, the landlord is expected to get it back sooner. If you are PCSing and will not be in Germany while the landlord is calculating the damages, you may want to consider finding a responsible party that can act as a legal representative or give a “power of attorney.” With regard to damages, it is always good to do a complete review with your landlord of the condition of the dwelling. With today’s technology, you may want to take pictures of everything as the pictures taken on a smartphone will have a timestamp that can be very helpful. You should get the advice of your housing office or a lawyer if you are not familiar with renting a house in Germany as there are many laws that are different than those of the United States. Q: Can you explain what you do and what you are responsible for at LRC Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder? A: I have three sections under my responsibility. I have the Personal Property Processing Office, which handles all the inbound and outbound household goods shipments as well as quality control, the customs program and passenger travel. Another section I manage is the transportation motor pool with over 200 government leased and a couple dozen government owned non-tactical vehicles. We also provide a post shuttle bus service, primarily for our single Soldiers who live in the barracks. And the third section I manage is the Drivers Testing and Training Station in Baumholder. In total, I have over 30 local national employees and a small number of Army civilian
employees. I get involved when there’s an issue, a dispute with a customer or they need clarification on regulatory guidance. I provide a wide variety of reports up through LRC Rheinland-Pfalz to the 405th AFSB headquarters, mostly concerning capabilities and workforce status. Q: Why is the Transportation Division mission in Baumholder is so important? A: I think each of the sections in transportation have their own various reasons why they are important. Starting out with PPPO, without this section no one could change duty stations. We’re the ones facilitating the pickup and delivery of everyone’s household goods as well as passenger travel. Our customs team pre-clears everyone’s shipments to help get their belongings to their next duty stations as quickly and problem-free as possible. The TMP section helps enable the units and organizations here in Baumholder to complete their missions by providing a reliable transportation capability. The Drivers Testing and Training Station is important because it provides U.S. Army Europe certificates of license to all our Baumholder community members as well as non-tactical vehicle drivers training and motorcycle riders training. All this helps to get our community members out on the road safely. Q: What do you enjoy about your job, and what motivates you? A: The biggest thing for me — including both my time as an Army civilian and my time as an active duty Soldier — is my passion to support Soldiers and Army

Families. Since I became an Army civilian one of the biggest challenges I faced was working with a civilian workforce, but with time and effort that’s now become one of the most enjoyable aspects of my job as a manager of well over 30 civilian employees. I have three fantastic teams of local national and Army civilian professionals who are all very proficient at what they do and a true pleasure to work with. LRC Rheinland-Pfalz and 405th AFSB: LRC Rheinland-Pfalz is one of seven LRCs under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. LRCs execute installation logistics support and services to include supply, maintenance, transportation and food service management as well as clothing issue facility operations, hazardous material management, personal property and household goods, passenger travel, and non-tactical vehicle and garrison equipment management. When it comes to providing day-to-day installation services, LRC Rheinland-Pfalz directs, manages and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. LRC Rheinland-Pfalz reports to the 405th AFSB, which is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and under the operational control of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The brigade is headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. Forces throughout Europe and Africa — providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces. Brigade honors life, legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
U.S. Army NATO Brigade Command Sgt. Maj. Bryan J. Valenzuela wrapped up the brigade’s Martin Luther King Jr. observance at Sembach Kaserne with an impromptu speech thanking the organizing committee of Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Burney, Sgt. 1st Class Ruben Avila, Staff Sergeant Miles Pierce, Staff Sergeant Daphne Pierre, Sgt. Terrell Harper and Spec. Dameyne Toney. He also encouraged the young leaders in the audience to spread the message of diversity to their Soldiers.
Story and photos by Troy Darr U.S. Army NATO Brigade U.S. Army NATO Brigade Soldiers and civilian employees commemorated the life of Martin Luther King Jr. at Sembach Kaserne on Jan. 21. The observance kicked off with a brief speech by the brigade commander, Col. Miles T. Gengler, followed by a one-mile march to honor those who participated in the March on Washington on Aug. 28, 1963, to advocate for civil and economic rights for African-Americans. “That was a novel experience for me,” said Mark McLeod, brigade chief of staff. I have never been to a Martin Luther King Jr. event that
started off with a one-mile march.” After the march, participants settled into the Tiger Theater with snacks provided by the USO to watch the documentary “The March,” narrated by Denzel Washington in 2013 to highlight the events leading up to and including the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The brigade’s Command Sgt. Maj. Bryan J. Valenzuela wrapped up the event with an impromptu speech thanking the organizing committee of Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Burney, Sgt. 1st Class Ruben Avila, Staff Sergeant Miles Pierce, Staff Sergeant Daphne Pierre, Sgt. Terrell Harper and Spec. Dameyne Toney.
Spec. Dameyne Toney (front left) and Staff Sgt. Toney works in the brigades G-6 section and comes from Chattanooga, TN. Pierre works in the brigade’s Headquarters Company Supply Office and comes from Homestead, FL.
During his speech Valenzuela tied the current generation to the generations who lived through the civil rights movement. “Think about the experiences they went through during that critical time and think about everything that lead to the hardship America was facing prior to 1963 that really goes unnoticed,” said Valenzuela. “Think about the people in this room and the organization you are in. We are not predominantly one color, one race, one religion. “I can talk to you each and every day, but everyone of you in the room is a leader. It takes you young leaders in the room to actu-

ally make a difference, to talk to your Soldiers. “You listening to me is like listening to your grandfather talk or your father telling war stories. “The way you’re going to make an impact is as a young noncommissioned officer or as a young captain who may be a company commander someday. You have to relay that message to your Soldiers and spread the word of diversity and the message it entails,” said Valenzuela. Spec. Dameyne Toney said he volunteered to serve on the com-
mittee because “observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day is important because it reminds us of our past, represents our historic struggles and inspires future generations to continue to fight.” U.S. Army NATO Brigade provides support to Soldiers and their families to provide ready and resilient Soldiers to the NATO alliance, maintain our joint and multinational partnerships and enhance the alliance. 1 ICTC receive AAME Award from Major General Smith Story and photo by Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 16th Sustainment Brigade Functional equipment is arguably one of the most crucial components of completing any mission. Without fully mission capable equipment it will be near impossible to preform missions and requirements. This is not an issue for the 1st Inland Cargo Transfer Company, 39th Movement Control Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade. Their maintenance program is impeccable and they routinely maintain an above standard operational readiness on all their equipment. This is why for the second year in a row they were awarded the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence by Major General Smith, signed off by General Christopher G. Cavoli, the commanding general of United States Army Europe and Africa. During
the 39th MCB formation Captain Lovely, the Company Commander of
1st ICTC, received the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence for his
Company’s outstanding achievement. This award is by no means easily obtained, as only one company can win it annually - yet 1st ICTC has done it twice in a row! The award is focused around improving and keeping standards regarding field maintenance readiness, understanding how maintenance can effect unit readiness, improving methods to maintain a high operational readiness while reducing waste, and recognizing those who make this program successful. The
1st ICTC has fulfilled all of these tasks exceptionally well. As Major General Smith described each mission’s occupational specialty has its own part in the overall success of any maintenance program. The supply specialist must ensure the parts required are ordered, the mechanics must ensure those parts are installed correctly, and the leaders must conduct meetings and ensure overall readiness and planning is tracked. Together it is a team effort and in this instance 1st ICTC was the winning team.

Ten ways parents can help kids make good nutritional choices by Claudia Sanchez-Bustamante Military Health System Communications Nutrition is a critical element in the Total Force Fitness strategy to main a medically ready force. It plays a big part in the force’s overall readiness and performance because the nutritional choices we make affect every aspect of life, including sleep, mood, and performance. “Eating healthy can empower individuals to make good choices, which influences both readiness and their overall health,” said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Melissa Amescua, a registered dietitian and manager of the Navy nutrition program at the 21st Century Sailor Office. “Eating healthy keeps us mentally prepared and physically fueled to take on any situation that comes at us at any time.” For children, its important parents and caretakers set the example by eating healthy with their kids and by providing healthy foods for the children to eat. “Food provides our children with energy to grow, concentrate, the ability to play, and to perform,” she said. “All things that are needed for them to be successful in school and at home.” Keeping children healthy by providing the right foods for them is also critical for prevention. “Our brain needs good nutrition to manage stress, maintain alertness, and optimize physical and cognitive performance,” said Amescua. “Mentally, just like our warfighters, they can perform so much better with nourishment because the food they consume affects their brain development.” Additionally, “not eating healthy can lead to being more overweight and obese, which also increases the need for more medical care and the risk for musculoskeletal injuries,” she said. “It puts us at risk for having a diagnosis such as diabetes or heart disease and even puts us at risk for getting viruses such as COVID-19.” The expert noted it’s not only important to make smart choices about what we feed kids, but also how much we feed them — portion sizes make a difference. “Children should be eating a wide variety of nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, dairy, and lean proteins,” she said. “Avoiding or limiting foods daily that are high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and many pre-packed processed foods may also need to be limited.”
The Health and Wellness Center at Langley Air Force Base, VA, offers portion control plates to assist in healthier eating practices. Each meal should include protein, vegetables, fruits, and a grain, with each serving approximately the size of a fist. Photo by Senior Airman Brittany Murphy
To meet their nutritional needs, she said most children should eat three meals and at least one snack during the day. Resources such as myplate.gov and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans can help make smarter choices. Additionally, Amescua recommends the 10 tips below for military parents and families to encourage kids to make smarter nutritional choices: 1. Be a role model. Children are more likely to eat foods that their parents eat while they are growing up. This means if the parent does not eat brussels sprouts, then nine times out of 10 the kids won’t either. To get kids to choose healthy foods, adult family members must choose them too. 2. Encourage drinking water. Ensure your child is drink-
ing water throughout the day, understanding that if they have juice that 4 ounces or half a cup of 100 percent juice is a serving. Kids who drink soda, energy drinks, or some types of juices consume mostly sugar and other ingredients such as caffeine that they do not need. These drinks encourage obesity, poor attentiveness, and even decrease calcium consumption. 3. Portion control. Your portion is not always their portion. Understand what a portion size looks like for you and for them, so they do not consume more than what their small bodies need. Excess calories can cause weight gain. 4. Make time for family mealtime. Research shows that families that eat together live a healthier lifestyle. Family meals can help prevent obesity

because they eat more slowly and talk more. 5. Eat breakfast. Encouraging your child to have a healthy breakfast daily can help with how they perform in school during the day. Breakfast equals brain power. 6. Choose healthy snacks for kids. Most children eat at least one snack per day. Use snack time to increase fruits and vegetable intake, keep different healthy snacks available, and avoid processed foods and added sugars when possible.
7. Teach your children to eat a rainbow of colors. Different foods provide different vitamins and minerals that are very important. Talk about where food comes from and how it helps nourish their bodies. 8. Don’t give up with those picky eaters. It can take 10 to 15 times for a child to like a new food – if they do not like it now do not give up. Implement the two-bite rule, where they must at least try the food. Remember children’s tastebuds change as they get older: When they are young, they are very strong, hence they do not like many foods, but the older they get the more likely they are to like new foods in different ways. 9. Avoid using food as a reward. If parents give ice cream or a dessert as a reward for good grades or good behavior, it enforces unhealthy behaviors of eating every time they do well. Instead of giving them a sweet treat, buy them a new book, toy, or take them to a movie or find time to do their favorite activity with them. 10. Involve them in meal planning, grocery shopping, and filling their lunch box. The more children feel a part of the meal and that they contributed to it, the more likely they will eat it with others. Also, remember to ask them to try new foods and incorporate their ideas into the meal preparation.

KONSTANZ from Page 1 since the Middle Ages, reveals how this traditional trading town came to life. The town’s unique location on the shores of what the Germans call Bodensee (Lake Constance) and the River Rhine, along with its proximity to Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein, make Konstanz an ideal holiday destination and touring base for excursions in the surrounding region. Bodensee (Lake Constance) Bodensee (Lake Constance) is the largest lake in Germany with a surface area of 536 km² and a volume of 48,5 billion m³ of water. At its longest, the lake measures 63 km and at its broadest it measures 14 km between Langenargen (in Germany) and Rorschach (in Switzerland). It’s the third largest lake in Central Europe. Konstanz has had settlers since the Stone Age and became established around 40 AD when the first Roman settlement on the area was recorded. It is home to the University of Konstanz, which for over 1,200 years used to be the RomanCatholic residence for the Diocese of Konstanz. The Rhine River as it begins its journey from the Swiss Alps runs across Lake Constance where the north part of the river houses the largest area of the city including the University of Konstanz, Industrial estates and residential areas. Towards the Rhine River’s southern side is the old town, lots of shopping facilities and administrative center including the University of Applied Sciences. There are car ferries available on Lake Constance to connect you with Meersburg, or a Catamaran shuttle service for pedestrians to reach Friedrichshafen. What to do in Konstanz There are so many things to do in Konstanz that you might like to grab a guide book as your itinerary or even take a guided tour organised by the tourist office (available in English). If you prefer independent travel then you might start by visiting Insel Mainau (Island Mainau) by taking a boat where you can view the famous butterfly house, a huge selection of flowers, exhibition halls, souvenir shops, picnic facilities and some beautiful spots for lunch. The lakefront promenade in Konstanz offers a superb platform for all kinds of outdoor activities. Pedestrians, roller skaters and cyclists all enjoy the perfectly paved promenade and adrenalin junkies looking for a bigger rush will find this is a hot spot for a variety of water sports. Konstanz is a top lakeside destinations so taking a boat trip is a must once you are there. You can take a boat to such destinations as Bregenz, Lindau, Friedrichshafen, Rohrschacherberg

and Mainau. There are boat excursions departing for Schaffhausen and Sten am Rhein for anyone interested in viewing the Rheinfall (Rhein Falls), the largest plain water waterfall in Europe. The Petershausen Abbey, a Benedictine monastery was founded in 983 and is well worth a visit. As is the Rosgarten Museum. Once a butchers’ guildhall it now highlights regional art and history, with an emphasis on medieval panel painting and sculpture. If impressive buildings are your thing, then you must see the restored protocathedral, Konstanz Minster, which has stood in Konstanz for centuries and is a rather magnificent piece of architecture. Other main sights in the city include the Konzil edifice that goes back to the 15th century; Niederburg or the Lower Castle, the remains of a Roman fortress; the Schnetztor, a fortified gate which was a part of the old city walls; the 9 meter-tall sculpture known as Imperia; an Archaeological Museum; and the Jan Hus Museum where the life of John Hus is documented. Hus was a Czech priest and philosopher who is considered the first Christian reformer (he lived before Luther and Calvin) and was crudely burned at the stake in 1415 for heresy because of his rebellious attitude towards the catholic church.

A cycling holiday Without a doubt, one of the best ways to experience the whole of Bodensee is to cycle around the lake, taking in several stops along the way. The BodenseeRadweg (Bodensee Cycle Route) begins in Konstanz and includes three countries and 273km along the way. The cycle path is usually flat, very well maintained and perfect for beginners and families. It’s of course possible to do smaller sections of the path if the full 273km seems a bit too much! Nightlife in Konstanz Konstanz is a laid back town that will suit anyone looking to party or just relax and soak up a great atmosphere. You can begin with the wonderful atmosphere of the Die Cocktailbar — don’t miss the daily happy hour between 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Klimper Kasten is another lounge/bar in the old town and a place that blends good music and retro decor with standard beer choices and cocktails. Also recommended is Heimat and Seerhein to discover something new each time. Where to eat There are many places to eat in Konstanz and there is no better place to begin your cuisine adventure than Hafenhalle — a wonderful beer garden
and restaurant, where you can try the local dish known as Maultaschen (stuffed pasta). The beer garden is a chance to enjoy great German beers and German pub food such as schnitzel, half chickens, wurst and pommes. There is also a lakeside cafe known as Hote Riva with a sunny terrace and known as one of the coolest places you can be seen in. To grab a lunch time light bite, try the Suppengrün for a fantastic selection of Soups. It has a very kidfriendly modern interior which is great for families. Konstanz’s main square is the home of the Cafe Münsterhof, a very inviting cafe where you can also catch a glimpse of the Minster Church as you feast on apple strudel. You can also get some delicious Singaporean food at the Meera Restaurant. Or try Le Bento, which offers fresh and healthy food, such as salads, smoothies and fresh sandwiches. Getting there Driving to Konstanz from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden is a surprisingly short 3.5 hour drive. From Stuttgart it’s a mere 1.5 hours drive which even makes it suitable for a day trip. But the most relaxing way to arrive is to take the train and start your trip from the minute you leave home. Due to regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, bookings and trips may be cancelled or postponed, and travel to neighboring countries may not be allowed. Please verify the status before making plans to attend. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies.

Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has survived through hatred and self-loathing in 1850s California. When she meets Michael Hosea, she discovers there is no brokenness that love can’t heal.
Wes Craven re-invented and revitalised the slasher-horror genre with this modern horror classic, which manages to be funny, clever and scary, as a fright-masked knife maniac stalks high-school students in middle-class suburbia. Craven is happy to provide both tension and self-parody as the body count mounts - but the victims aren’t always the ones you’d expect.

Exhibition “Hängengeblieben / Stayed” at Stadtmuseum Kaiserslautern Story and photo courtesy of Stadtmuseum Kaiserslautern The U.S. military has been present in RhinelandPalatinate since the beginning of the 1950s. Since then, the number of active duty military, civilians and their dependents has gone into the millions. At certain points in time, they have constituted up to five percent of the total state population. Currently about 55,000 individuals account for the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Many have remained in the area after their assignments ended in the last decades. The Docu Center Ramstein, headed by director Michael Geib, curated the exhibit to be shown at the Stadtmuseum in Kaiserslautern. The exhibition Hängengeblieben / Stayed highlights those who decided to stay in the area. Locating people of varying backgrounds and life experience was the aim of the project using individual interviews.
The DCR attempts to find out about the individual ways of life of those who “got stuck” here. The interviews mainly focus on their reasons for leav-
ing their homes, arriving and getting acclimated in Germany as well as their very personal feelings and impressions. Photographer Thomas Brenner
uses these interviews to create very expressive portraits within their environments. Fifteen extremely personal life stories in pictures and sto-
ries were created in the end. The spectrum of persons displayed ranges from a Vietnam veteran to a young German-American woman in the second generation, up to a castle-loving U.S. pensioner with Jamaican roots and an ex-military cop, who as a contemporary witness, offers tours of his former working place for visitors. The selected biographies do not claim to paint a full story, but rather showcase different life stories and would like to draw attention to a scarcely observed chapter of GermanAmerican postwar history. The Stadtmuseum Kaiserslautern – Theodor-ZinkMuseum / Wadgasserhof, is host of the exhibition with 15 highgloss photographs and biographies in German and English. The exhibition is from Feb. 5 to Apr. 10, Wed-Fri from 10 a.m.5. p.m, Sat and Sun 11 a.m.-6 p.m., admission € 5.00 adults/€ 2.50 children. For more information, visit http://stadtmuseum-kl.de.
