instructed and rode from Columbus, Georgia, to North Carolina,” Wright said. “When I got off the bus, you know who met me? It wasn’t my sponsor, it wasn’t my supervisor: it was Joe Winbush. He threw me into the car and drove me from the airport to Pope Air Force Base.” “It seemed like a seven hour ride, but it was probably just only 20 minutes,” Wright continued, shaking his head and smiling. “And man, I got a talking to… I got a talking to.” That same day, Winbush picked up Wright from his dorm and took him to his house for dinner. “He sat me down and said, ‘Let me tell you why what you did made no sense,’” Wright recalled. “‘Let me tell you how to be a professional, how to wear the uniform, how to stay out of trouble, and how to deal with adversity.’” Thus began Wright’s Air Force career, and his long journey through mentorship. Wright admitted that having Winbush as a mentor was not easy.

However, Wright acknowledged that Winbush’s firmness helped steer him in the right direction in his career. “He was always tough on me; he always told me what I needed to hear, not what I wanted to hear,” Wright said, followed by a long pause. “Let me tell you, without now Master Sgt. retired Joseph Winbush, I would be nothing.” “I’ve received letters of counseling, letters of reprimand, basically every LO you can think of,” Wright added. After a string of negative paperwork, Winbush ordered Wright to join the base honor guard. In the honor guard, Wright would perform various military ceremonies, including funerals. It was at one particular funeral where Wright found a turning point in his career when he was presenting the flag to the deceased’s next of kin. “I got down on one knee, gave the statement, and for the first time I actually locked eyes with the spouse,” Wright said, this time taking a more serious See MENTORSHIP, Page 3
LIFESTYLES
“Let me tell you about the power of mentorship,” said Chief Master Sgt. Kaleth Wright, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa command chief, before a crowd of Airmen and civilians at the 86th Comptroller Squadron on Ramstein. “What I think is important for all of you is deliberate development. There are tons of opportunities for you to grow, develop, and be a better person, but sometimes we’re not as deliberate as we should be.” Wright, who is slated to become the 18th chief master sergeant of the Air Force, visited Airmen to discuss with them the importance of having a mentor, and the impact a mentor can have on an Airman’s career. Wright shared his own story of how his mentor helped him change the course of his career when he was a young Airman.
“When I was an Airman, I was a menace to society,” Wright said jokingly, drawing a roar of laughter from the audience. “Sometimes I’m almost embarrassed to talk about some of the things I did as a young Airman, and how misguided I was.” Wright remembered taking leave after graduating from his technical training in 1989 and calling his first duty station, Pope Air Force Base — now Pope Army Air Field, North Carolina — to tell them he was going to be late because he was “still hanging out.” That was when he was introduced to his future mentor. “Whoever answered the phone said, ‘Ok, hold on,’” Wright recalled. “And they gave the phone to Tech. Sgt. Joe Winbush,” he said smiling sheepishly. The now retired Master Sgt. Joseph Winbush was not pleased. He gave Wright a piece of his mind and ordered Wright to report for duty at a certain place and time. “So I jumped on the bus as he

Breaking down walls: NCOs, senior NCOs reach out to mentor young Airmen Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Master Sgt. Timothy Herrman, U.S. Air Forces in Europe unit deployment cell superintendent, was young and alone when he arrived at his first duty station, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, as a security forces Airman. Although it was the beginning of a long and uncertain journey, he was also excited to begin a new chapter in his life. “I was scared,” Herrman recalled. “When I arrived at my first duty station almost 16 years ago, it was an eye-opener. My emotions were probably intimidation … but I was also highly motivated to be the best Airman I could be.” Herrman acknowledged that his career started off rough, but after a while, he started getting the hang of his job. He moved up the ranks and eventually became a senior noncommisioned officer. It was a journey approximately 16 years in the making on a road still being paved. Herrman is just one of many senior NCOs working to mentor junior Airmen, hoping to pass down his knowledge and experience to those

who are eager to develop themselves and their careers. Staff Sgt. Kenneth Welch, 86th Maintenance Group maintenance qualification instructor, works with Herrman to help young Airmen find direction in their careers. Noting that rank and age are common barriers which might cause many Airmen to turn down mentorship opportunities from NCOs, Welch hopes to convince Airmen to look past these hindrances for the sake of bettering themselves and their careers.

“I look at all of us as people,” Welch said. “I respect everybody as an adult human being. So when I come to you, I don’t look at your rank first; I look at you as a person — a person that has feelings and emotions so I can talk to you as such. I tell my Airmen … don’t be afraid to go up to a senior NCO, because they’re humans as well,” Welch added. One of the avenues both Herrman and Welch use to reach out to Airmen is The Huddle — a club geared toward mentoring Airmen, but which wel-
comes all people. “We accept everyone; we even get Airmen who come in with their families,” Herrman said. Herrman encouraged Airmen to take advantage of the opportunities The Huddle offers, explaining that it is an environment where they can seek help without fear of being judged or ridiculed. The mentors do their best to guide Airmen to positive solutions without leaving a negative impact on their workplace relationships, he added. “The Huddle is about bringing junior Airmen, NCOs and senior NCOs together to be able to talk about tough issues and keeping a positive drive on everything,” Herrman said. “This isn’t a place where you can sound off about everything that’s negative about your workplace; this is a place where you can ask for advice if there is something going on. We don’t go against supervisors and the way people run their squadrons. We provide unbiased opinions, especially since we’re outside your career field.” As the older generation of the Air Force prepares to pass the baton to the next, Herrman, Welch, other NCOs and senior NCOs hope that junior Airmen can learn as much from them before they hang up their uniforms.

Air traffic controllers keep eyes in sky
A KC-135 Stratotanker takes off Dec. 12 from Ramstein. Air traffic controllers are responsible for managing aircraft throughout their flights and guiding them through their respective airspaces.
Story and photos by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Maintenance keeps aircraft operating efficiently and pilots operate the aircraft, but while in the air, it’s the eyes on the ground that are critical to the safe operation of aircraft. Airmen from the 86th Operations Support Squadron air traffic control tower have possibly the most stressful job in the Air Force as they are charged with communicating with pilots to safeguard million-dollar aircraft and priceless lives during takeoffs, landings, and in flight. “One mistake on our end could have a dire impact to the Air Force and families of the crew members on the plane,” said Airman 1st Class Francis Dyball, 86 OSS air traffic controller apprentice. “We have to stay healthy and alert at all times to ensure we are only doing our best, day in and day out.” On any given day, Ramstein air traffic controllers can oversee approximately 200 sorties and safely guide each aircraft in the airspace to its destination. Airmen in the ATC career field undergo rigorous and continuous training to help build their skills and confidence in preparation for any challenges they may run into. “On average for air traffic controllers in the
Air Force to receive their (occupational) badge, it takes approximately 12 months,” Dyball said. “After being rated, when we move to another base, we have to start from square one with training. We then learn the operations for the specific airfield and its aircraft at our new location.” At Ramstein, cargo planes are the primary aircraft that operate within the airfield, but many others have been guided through the airspace. “Even though heavy cargo aircraft is the primary type of airframe we have in our airspace, we see a wide range of aircraft come through,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Hoffman, 86 OSS air traffic controller journeyman. “The variety of aircraft we see here can add multiple challenges. Each airframe has different restrictions and operational limits which we have to plan out when communicating to the pilots.” After the daily stress of the job dissipates and Airmen retire to their personal lives, the accomplishment of air traffic controllers maintaining the wing’s mission of generating and employing airpower leaves the controllers with a sense of pride. “The best part of the job to me is the prestige,” Hoffman said. “It’s a difficult career that not everyone can do, and the challenge of getting your badge makes it very humbling. I couldn’t imagine doing any other job.”

tone. “All she said was ‘thank you,’ and a tear rolled down her cheek. “That day I cried,” Wright continued. “At that second, at that moment, I said to myself, ‘Kaleth, you have to do something with your life; you have to get right.’ That started the process of my 180 from being a menace of society and a troublemaker to trying to make something of myself.” Wright would eventually rise through the ranks and become a mentor himself. One of the beneficiaries of his mentorship was Tech. Sgt. Gerry Volcy, 86 CPTS financial management analysis supervisor. The two met when Volcy was at his first duty station, not very long after he emigrated from his homeland, Haiti. “Joining the Air Force after being in the U.S. for a few years was a shock,” Volcy said. “He took me under his wing and started to mentor me to be a positive father figure, role model and so forth. This eventually evolved to mentorship in my career. I didn’t know or understand what mentorship was, but he reached out to me although I was not in his unit. He continued to keep a close eye on my progression as I became a military training instructor and moved through the ranks.” “Chief Wright, to me, is that parent and teacher you can’t fool; he will give you the candid feedback you deserve,” Volcy added. As Wright continued his talk, he encouraged Airmen to abandon the mentality that in order to be leaders, they must first attain a high rank. All Airmen can be mentors in their own right no matter what their rank is, as long as they have the right attitude, he said. “If you’re going to do it, you’re going to do it now,” Wright stressed, pounding on the table. “That’s part of the deliberate development process; we have to take care of each other. All of us are leaders, I don’t care what your rank is; you can lead from right where you are.” Although Wright covered a wide range of topics during his visit, his talk hung on one principle: everyone needs to be teachable, no matter how old they are, or what their rank is.

Diving into new year: Ramstein Aquatic Center now open Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Ramstein Aquatic Center on Ramstein reopened on Jan. 3. The base pool was drained for approximately three weeks for annual maintenance, including replacing old tiles in the pools and locker rooms, redoing some of the grout work and replacing two water slides in the children’s pool. Sarah Alcarez, Ramstein Aquatic Center director, explained that the annual closure and maintenance was the best way to ensure the facility’s services continue without major longterm interferences. “Without closing annually, we would run into more sporadic prob-
lems. It’s these sporadic issues that would lead to us needing to drain the pool more than just once a year, which I think would be a bigger inconvenience to our customers,” Alcarez said. December was chosen as the month to close the pool because it is generally the month with least customers, she added. “We’ve tracked patronage for the eight years we’ve been open, and December is definitely that lower month,” Alcarez explained. “I apologize for any inconveniences, but it is well worth it in the long run.” The facility’s lap pool has a capacity of 332,857 gallons and takes three days to fill. With the Ramstein Aquatic Center now open, customers can dive into the new year.

Fuels Airmen: Foundation of 86 AW mission
Airman 1st Class Austin Bashaw, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels distribution operator, carries a hose from the fuel truck to a parked C-130J Super Hercules Dec. 12 on Ramstein. Fuels specialists are also responsible for operating the vehicles, equipment and storage facilities that are essential to the refueling operation, while also ensuring the compliance of all safety regulations involved with handling these volatile liquids.
Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Technology is advancing every year. It keeps us warm during the winter, cooks our food, and ensures transportation gets us from point A to point B. But no matter how far we technologically advance, we will always need fuel. Here, fuels technicians must work across the base to ensure the mission gets done, because without fuel pilots are pedestrians. One of these technicians, Airman 1st Class Austin Bashaw, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels distribution operator, works with JP-8 jet fuel, unleaded, and diesel fuel every day, ensuring it’s transported to the right place at the right time. “The primary thing I do day to day is refuel aircraft,” Bashaw said. “This task is accomplished with either one of our
R-11 fuel trucks or a pantograph, which is essentially stainless steel piping with a meter on wheels. The R-11s have a tank that holds a capacity of 6000 gallons. The pantographs are hooked up directly to the underground fuel hydrant system and fuel is supplied directly to the aircraft from the tanks.” It is the job of the fuels management flight to manage every aspect of refueling for every aircraft on the flightline. More than handling fuel, these professionals are also responsible for operating the vehicles, equipment and storage facilities that are essential to the refueling operation, while also ensuring the compliance of all safety regulations involved with the handling these volatile liquids. Here, the process begins when fuel enters the base from the European pipelines. It is then directly received in storage tanks scattered across the base. Some hold more than 1 million gallons.
Airman 1st Class Austin Bashaw, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels distribution operator, adjusts the output from a fuel truck during a refueling operation Dec. 12 on Ramstein. It is the job of fuels specialists to manage every aspect of refueling for every aircraft on the flightline.
The fuel is then issued via truck or pantograph. Throughout the process, fuels laboratory technicians periodically sample and analyze the fuel to ensure it is clean, dry and serviceable prior to being issued to the customers on the flightline. “Some of the challenges include meeting response times so that planes may leave on time,” Bashaw explained. “Sure you have to work pretty hard most days, but working in fuels has been a very rewarding experience for me.” These are just some examples of what fuels Airmen manage every day, Bashaw said. The fuel mission itself is similar to many around the world, but the scale and location of it makes it different, according to Master Sgt. Terrance Ladd, 86 LRS fuels superintendent. “Ramstein’s heavy airlift mission and being the gateway allows our Airmen the opportunity to see immediately how
their job impacts missions across the globe,” Ladd said. “Our Airmen have an unique ability to wake up to some news channel about a humanitarian ops mission in Europe, come to work and issue fuel to the aircraft supporting that mission, then read about how successful the mission was later in the week. They have a sense of accomplishment knowing they had input.” From point A to point B, fuels specialists take on the task of ensuring planes have the energy to provide air power across the world. And while technology advances how we complete our day-to-day tasks, the fuel it needs to function will never go unneeded. “The way I see it, no matter how well an aircraft or vehicle is put together or if it has all the newest parts put into place, the aircraft will never move off the ground if it does not have fuel,” Bashaw said. “You can’t have an Air Force without working planes.”

728 AMS: 50 years of mobility support at Incirlik by John M. Lacomia 521st Air Mobility Wing History office For more than 65 years, Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, has hosted many aircraft that countered the Cold War Soviet threat and has responded to numerous crises in the Middle East. From earthquakes, humanitarian relief operations, to wartime activities, Incirlik has been at the center of operations in that region of the world. At the heart of operations at Incirlik is the 728th Air Mobility Squadron. An element of Ramstein’s 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, the 728 AMS provides en route support to aircraft passing through Eastern Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia. The 728th specializes in aerial port operations, aircraft maintenance, and command and control. They also provide passenger and cargo services for all airlift missions that originate from, transit through or terminate at Incirlik. Another function of the squadron is aircraft maintenance. The maintainers generate, launch, recover, service and repair C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Lastly, the command and control part of the mission directs the operation of airlift support and all AMC aircraft landing and departing Incirlik. Appropriately, this 50-year old squadron adopted the motto “Strength Through Wisdom.” The squadron activated on January 6, 1966, as the 628th Military Airlift Support Squadron by the Military Airlift Command. Since their activation, the 628 MASS has provided critical aerial port operations keep-

ing cargo, passengers and equipment moving throughout their area of operations. In May 1971, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the city of Bingol in eastern Turkey. The earthquake destroyed 90 percent of the city, left over 800 dead and another 15,000 homeless. Less than two days after the earthquake, the 628 MASS played a vital role in the delivery of more than four tons of medical supplies, tents, and blankets from Incirlik to Ankara for the Turkish Red Crescent Society. In August 1978, Iran found itself

confronted by Islamic revolutionaries. Violent protests spread throughout Iran that threatened U.S. citizens living there. They needed to be evacuated quickly. The U.S. Air Force used MAC C-5 and C-141 Starlifter aircraft to move more than 5,800 people out of Iran from December 1978 through February 1979. Airmen from the 628 MASS processed passengers as they came through Incirlik and on to other locations. After the 1991 Kurdish uprising in Iraq, Saddam Hussein retaliated against the Kurds forcing almost two million Kurds to flee their homes into Iran, Turkey and to the cold mountain slopes on the Turkish border. The U.S. and five other nations partnered together for Operation Provide Comfort and began sending humanitarian relief to the Kurds. Personnel from the newly redesignated 628th Air Mobility Support Squadron once again transferred relief supplies from C-5s and C-141s to U.S. Air Forces in Europe C-130 Hercules aircraft. The 628 AMSS contributed to more than 7,000 tons of relief supplies and medical personnel to aid the refugees. Members of the 628 AMSS and Incirlik continued to play an integral role in succeeding operations (Northern Watch, Provide Hope) throughout the 1990s. The Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist
attacks on the U.S. led to a change from peacetime to wartime operations. During this same time, the 628 AMSS was redesignated the 728th Air Mobility Squadron. As this war on terror intensified, the U.S. and its partners relied heavily on the Airmen at Incirlik. Throughout Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom, the threefold mission of the 728 AMS was called upon repeatedly to keep the cargo and equipment moving. For well over a decade, the high operations tempo continued and the 728 AMS ceaselessly accomplished the mission. While the war on terror officially ended in 2014, the capabilities of the 728 AMS are still in demand. The 728 AMS has become one of the leading air mobility squadrons integrating expertise, innovation, compliance and professionalism in the execution of its mission. Five decades after activation, the 728 AMS continues to project rapid global mobility. For their outstanding and gallant service during numerous contingencies, the 728 AMS has earned 17 Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards and contributed directly to six Air Force Meritorious Unit Awards received by its parent wing, the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing. After 50 years of service, the 728 AMS continues to gain “Strength Through Wisdom.”

by Sgt. 1st Class Michael O’Brien 16th Sustainment Brigade Public Affairs MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU, Romania — A heavy equipment transporter team verified main supply routes capable of moving an M1A2 Abrams tank on a HET convoy that started Dec. 6 in Romania en route to Bulgaria. “The 16th Sustainment Brigade’s HET proof of principle enables uninterrupted combat power generation, endurance and operational reach in support of the United States Army Europe forces,” said Col. Michelle M.T. Letcher, 16th Sustainment Brigade commander. “Our junior leaders and allies executing the convoy are validating freedom of movement and the ability to move combat power along interior lines of communication.” The convoy consisted of six vehicles: two M1070 Heavy Equipment Transporters, two M1078 Light Medium Tactical Vehicles, one M969 Fueler and one M984 Wrecker. A total of 13 Soldiers coming from three different companies in the
18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion planned, prepared and executed the convoy operation. The junior leaders from the 16th Sustainment Brigade worked in conjunction with Romanian and Bulgarian NATO allies, as their military and civilian escorts integrated in the convoy to make sure the routes were clear to travel. “We are working with our allies to proof routes required to enable the ‘speed of assembly’ required for tactical and operational maneuver,” said Maj. Gen Duane Gamble, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commanding general. “Proofing routes helps us understand where we have freedom of movement and where we must apply leadership, effort and resources to achieve the freedom of movement required to deter and defend.” “The proof of principle offers a unique set of opportunities for my Soldiers and me,” said 1st Lt. Adrian Dilley, 317th Support Maintenance Company platoon leader. “The mission allows Soldiers to extend their influence beyond the chain of command, and it establishes routes that will be used by the United States mili-
tary as a whole.” At the end of the six-day convoy operation, Soldiers completed their validation of heavy equipment
transportation routes in Romania and Bulgaria, many of which had been previously untraveled by military vehicles from the U.S. Army.
Staff Sgt. William Kyle, 51st Transportation Company motor transport operator, delivers a convoy brief to Soldiers from 51st Trans, 240th Quartermaster Supply Company and 317th Support Maintenance Company prior to movement in preparation for a five-day proof-of-principle movement through Romania and Bulgaria Dec. 6. Junior leader Kyle, who is leading the convoy, and Sgt. Charles Zotto, another motor transport operator in the company who is the assistant convoy commander, are thriving in this complex environment.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz welcomes new senior enlisted adviser, farewells outgoing CSM
Col. Keith E. Igyarto, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, passes the garrison colors to incoming Command Sgt. Maj. Ulysses D. Rayford during the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz change of responsibility ceremony Dec. 16 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh. Rayford assumed responsibility of the garrison from Command Sgt. Maj. Edward J. Williams III.
Story and photo by Cameron Porter U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs A change of responsibility ceremony for the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz took place Dec. 16 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh. Command Sgt. Maj. Ulysses D. Rayford assumed responsibility of the garrison from Command Sgt. Maj. Edward J. Williams III during the ceremony. Much of the ceremony’s motivation and emotion came by way of Williams, who will retire soon from the Army with more than 30 years of service. “I am a Soldier, and today like every day is a great day to be a Soldier,” Williams said. During the ceremony the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, Col. Keith E. Igyarto, offered nothing but praise and respect for Williams, talking specifically about his service as the garrison’s command sergeant major. “He spearheaded changes to Soldier and family programs and services, including in- and outprocessing sponsorship, barracks, the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers
program and the Soldier for Life Transition Assistance Program,” Igyarto said. “His efforts supported the readiness and resiliency of thousands of service members and their families.” Igyarto also noted Williams’ support of Soldiers and families comes from the home front as well. Besides always being there for her husband, Vanessa Williams, provided countless Soldiers and spouses with much-needed service and support for the past 26 years, the commander said. “You have touched many lives with your service and (have) been a source of inspiration to many more,” Igyarto said to Vanessa. “Command Sergeant Major Williams, Vanessa — thank you … not only for your service here at USAG Rheinland-Pfalz but for a lifetime of dedicated service to our nation and her allies.” During his speech, Williams’ lifelong dedication to the Army was evident when he touched upon an emotional subject — what it takes to be a Soldier. “I am a Soldier, and like many Soldiers, endure hardship as a good Soldier should. I am a Soldier, and like so many Soldiers, suffer from survivors’ remorse,” Williams said. “I
subscribe to the belief that if everyone does not come home, none of the rest of us can ever fully come home either.” Igyarto told Rayford and everyone present at the ceremony that he is excited about the new command sergeant major’s arrival, and he looks forward to working together as the new USAG Rheinland-Pfalz command team. “We’ll need strong, enlisted leadership for our Soldiers to navigate change, and I’m confident we will have that in Command Sergeant Major Rayford,” Igyarto said. Rayford responded during his speech by simply stating that he’s excited to be a part of the team, and even though he’s coming off the bench, “he’s ready to be a star.” Rayford’s last command sergeant major assignment was with the Information Systems Engineering Command at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. He entered the Army in 1992 as a multi-channel telecommunications operator and served at every level of leadership for a noncommissioned officer from team chief to brigade command sergeant major. Some of his assignments include Fort Hood in Texas, Germany and the Republic of Korea as well as multiple assign-
ments to Fort Gordon in Georgia and Kuwait. In addition to obtaining a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Excelsior College, Rayford completed every level of noncommissioned leadership training, culminating with the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in 2011. Rayford is married to Tammy Taylor Rayford, and they have two children — a 21-year-old son, Chauncey, and a 17-year-old daughter, Alyssa. Williams entered the Army in 1986 and served in numerous locations throughout the course of his career to include Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, South America, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., and Fort Campbell, Ky., among others. He held leadership positions ranging from team chief to brigade-level command sergeant major. Williams is a 2008 graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy and completed all levels of noncommissioned leadership training. Williams also holds a master’s degree from Northcentral University with a concentration in organizational leadership. Williams is married to Vanessa, and they have three adult children — Edward IV, Josselyn and Eric.

New Year’s resolutions to help KMC stay safe by Heidi Porter 86th Mission Support Group As the community misconduct specialist, I deal with many problems service members face that could be easily resolved by some precautionary measure and common sense behavior. Here are some hints to help our community stay safe and have a better new year: • Secure your vehicles and house to prevent thieves from gaining easy
access. Do not leave items in open view in your car, including GPS systems, cell phones, military equipment, recall rosters and sensitive equipment. • Do not purchase expensive items such as vehicles or houses without first inspecting the item and knowing the seller is legitimate. • Be careful when you give an individual a general power of attorney, often a limited power of attorney will suffice. Check with your
legal office for details. • Understand the importance of your government documents, including your Common Access Card and passport. Always keep them with you or in a safe place. • Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances; always have a plan. • Don’t become a victim of extortion. A known technique is to threaten to expose embarrassing photos that you unknowingly gave to an
online scam artist. • Do not walk around downtown in any city alone, especially at night. If someone tries to fight you, walk away if possible and call the police. • Ensure children are supervised in accordance with the KMC child supervision matrix. • Report all traffic accidents to polizei or security forces, regardless of how minor, in order to prevent being charged with “failure to report” and “fleeing the scene.”

Children disguised as the three holy kings come to people’s doors from after Christmas through today. After singing, they leave a blessing above the door.
by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs From after Christmas until late January, children disguised as the three holy kings can be seen walking from house to house in the KMC. They have paper crowns on their head and carry a big golden star on a pole. They sing, pray and ask for charity collections for their parish. Each year, about 500,000 children participate in the fundraiser event which was established in 1959. More than €600 million were collected to support more than 51.000 projects and relief programs for children in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Oceania and Eastern Europe. Today is the official day when Germans observe Three Kings Day or Epiphany. The day marks the end of the Christmas season. The Christmas tree is lit for the last time and discarded, and the ornaments are packed away until next Christmas. It’s one of Germany’s most traditional and characteristic religious holidays, but only in the

states of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria and Sachsen Jan. 6 is a legal holiday. The children asking for donations represent Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In former times, when ringing doorbells, they received Christmas cookies, pretzels and sausages. After receiving a donation, the three holy kings bless the house by writing with chalk “20C+M+B17” above the doors to keep evil from entering. The three letters C, M and B do not stand for the kings’ initials but for the Latin words “Christus Mansionem Benedictat” and literally mean “Christ bless this home.” The blessing has to stay over the door until the next Three Kings Day. Caspar is Persian and means treasurer; Melchior is Hebraic and means the king of light; and the Babylonian name Balthasar means “the Lord may protect the life of the king.” The three wise men were considered kings, because people believed that only kings would be able to bring such gifts as gold, incense and myrrh to the stable where Christ was born. As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA finds untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians, which serves as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. These women quickly rise through the ranks of NASA, alongside many of history’s greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit and guaranteeing his safe return. Starring Octavia Spencer and Taraji P. Henson. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (PG-13) In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things and, in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves. Starring Felicity Jones and Mads Mikkelsen.
