The exercise was designed to enhance the 435th CRS’s ability to coordinate and operate mobility operations with the 37th AS in a semi-permissive environment. Since the only thing that separates the two squadrons is Ramstein’s flight line, the 435th CRS went to the other side and they both got to work.

The 435th CRS command and control function paired with the air terminal operations center kicked off operations on the ramp. Nearly a third of the 435th CRS worked seamlessly with the 37th AS for two 16-hour days. Maintainers prepared four C-130J Super Hercules aircraft while aircrew worked with mobile aerial porters to load small cargo pallets for airdrops and combat offloads.

“We are in a resource constrained Air Force and we’re always trying to do more with less,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Brad Seehawer, 435th CRS assistant operations officer.

“We are doing this exercise to show that we can train our

members without having to fly them across the continent or back to the United States.”

To maximize training opportunity and current operations, Airmen rotated from the squadrons to the exercise location. The rotation allowed Airmen from the two squadrons to get familiar with each other since they would be working together in a deployed location.

“This is the first time we’ve done exercises on Ramstein with the 37th Airlift Squadron,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt Deven Kauppi, 435th Contingency Response Squadron mobile aerial porter. “We usually go out with them to various countries like Romania, Poland or Bulgaria to conduct training.”

The exercise saved the Air Force thousands of dollars because it was on their home installation. The location reduced additional flight hours and personnel travel required to conduct an extensive training like Agile Wolf.

“Working alongside our partner nations is extremely important, so there’s incredible value in honing our skills in our backyard first, to add even more value to our effectiveness in the European area of operation,” Seehawer said.

After downloading the app, Ramstein personnel can search for Ramstein Air Base and make it a “Favorite.” Once a duty station is marked as a favorite, users will receive all relevant notifications for that installation. When personnel PCS from their current duty station, they can quickly redesignate their new duty loca-

A Johnston, Colorado, native, Ingalls demonstrated outstanding work in the facilitation of installation support.

Her involvement in preventive maintenance, work requests and projects that help keep up 5.9 million square yards of pavement, 86 miles of roads and 26 miles of perimeter fencing across Ramstein caught the attention of leadership.

“Ingalls dictates the maintenance and inspections of all the pavements, airfield and roads, and she’s been instrumental in us standing up a lot of our new CE programs of being preventive instead of reactive,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Justin Jones, 786th CES requirements and optimization section chief.

“She always gives attention to detail, looks for guidance and tries to be educated to be the best she can at the job.”

U.S. Air Force Col. Matt S. Husemann, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, and U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto J. Rendon, 86th AW command chief, visited the 786th CES requirements and optimization section to congratulate Ingalls on her accomplishments.

“I don’t know if you guys know the impact that CE has each and every day, and I don’t know that we say ‘thanks’ enough,” Husemann said. “You guys are kind of the quiet professionals in the background that are doing everything.

Whether that’s the roads we’re on, whether it’s fixing the fences that are out there, or leaning forward and building things, what you do takes care of the families that are here, each and every day.”

Outside of work hours, Ingalls dedicates time to volunteer projects raising money for college-bound high school students and the

This past fall, Ingalls, with the help of her spouse, Amber, exemplified the core value of service before self, when she coordinated the building and operation of a haunted house that took 33 days of planning and work with three organizations, 35 volunteers and over 600 visitors.

Their efforts raised 4,800 dollars in scholarships to Kaiserslautern Military Community high school seniors and 750 dollars for the CES Booster Club, Ingalls said.

Accomplishments like these, coupled with a high level of job dedication, are what the Airlifter of the Week program recognizes.

“We have a lot of recognition programs, but this one is about reaching out to all of our groups, and saying, ‘This is your window now to tell us who your finest Airmen are, who are making the job happen,’” Rendon said. “You work extremely hard, not just on duty, but obviously with stuff that you don’t have to do, like the haunted house, and you’re doing it really well. You and your spouse should be proud, along with all of your family.”

CES is like a close family, and the support within and recognition that is given to each

other is very much appreciated, Ingalls said of winning the award.

Before the end of 2019, all hard-working Airmen that individuals like Ingalls represent, were reminded by leader-

ship to take some well-earned rest and enjoy time with their families and friends.

“We just went through the exercise, and now we’re getting ready to go into the holiday season, so please take some

time to be with family and friends,” Husemann said. “We need to give you that break.

You all have earned it, and we’re going to hit it again coming in the New Year because the mission does not stop.”

by Jason S. Tudor U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs In January 2019, Mychelle Eckstein got word she’d been hired for a job at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

Excited as she was to get working, she knew her 2-year-old daughter, Lyla, would need child care. That’s when anxiety crept in.

“I’d heard from social media and others that you could be ‘wait-listed’ for more than a year trying to get into one of the area Child Development Centers,” said Eckstein, wife of Army Sgt. Nathaniel Eckstein, 102nd Signal Battalion. “I was expecting to have to find another child care provider.”

These kinds of expectations, like long wait times to get into area CDCs, true or false, are not uncommon and are usually the product of not having accurate information from the source, according to Jason Etchell, who serves as the coordinator for seven Armyrun CDCs at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. He believes in the mission of what he does.

“Our mission is to (support Soldier and family readiness) by reducing the conflict between mission requirements and parent responsibilities,” Etchell said. “Placing children so military members can go to work is of prime importance to us.”

In February 2019, now Secretary of Defense Mark Esper added his support to Etchell’s ability to support mission readiness. “Child care is very important, so I want to put dollars there and I want to make sure we get the policies right,” said Esper during a town hall meeting with the Association of the U.S. Army. “I’ve got a lot of military kids who are not in on-base child care, and they should be. So it’s things like that I’m going to change, either from a funding perspective or a policy perspective.”

GETTING ON THE LIST More than 200 Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation employees serve seven Army CDCs in the garrison footprint — two at Baumholder, two at Landstuhl, and one each at Kleber Kaserne, Miesau Army Depot, and Sembach Kaserne. Kleber CDC reopened in August 2019. The Air Force also offers CDCs at Ramstein Air Base and Vogelweh Housing Complex.

the world. Eckstein found the initial enrollment tricky but, once enrolled, said the website performed well.

“It was much smoother than I was expecting,” she said. “It was a breeze to use.”

Once in the system, applicants are broken into areas of priority set by Department of Defense with regard to the sponsor type (military or civilian) and spouse status (active duty, full-time working, student, seeking employment). The system then uses the assigned priority along with the request of care date to determine the sequence on the wait list. According to Etchell, the type of families that fall into ‘category 1,’ the highest priority category, include: • Families with ‘wounded warriors’ • Child and Youth Services staff members • Single- and dual-military families • One parent military or DoD civilian with full-time working spouse The system also prioritizes fulltime students, as it does families with a parent that does not work (on a space-available basis) and others.

“We actively work this wait list and try to figure out ways to get parents in as quickly as possible,” Etchell said.

“Our staff work very hard. I know they really don’t like when they need to tell someone who needs child care that they will need to be on the wait list.”

BEING UNDERSTANDING, FLEXIBLE FOR FAMILY NEEDS Eckstein said she waited about

three weeks before she got word on an opening — and a challenge. She wanted Lyla to be cared for at one of the two Landstuhl CDCs. However, the first available opening came from Vogelweh.

“We weren’t thrilled and it wasn’t convenient, but we accepted it,” she said. “We live on Vogelweh, but we wanted Lyla at Landstuhl. It just made more sense for us,” Eckstein said.

Eckstein’s dilemma is one that confronts many families and is solved only when someone vacates an available slot or staffing is increased. Some wait weeks, even months, for a slot. Some settle. Fortunately for Eckstein, a family got orders and a space opened in Landstuhl.

“The CDC staff at Landstuhl is fantastic. They are always so nice,” she said.

The space versus ‘want’ dilemma is a reason why Etchell and others ask families to be flexible in the process.

“If it comes to a point where we have a wait list and it’s more than the capacity of those centers, it is a challenge,” he said. “There’s only a finite amount of space in all CDCs.” Etchell and his team have also been able to open more space by other means. Previously, CYS school-age centers had before- and after-school hours. CYS decided it could use the time in between ‘before and after’ for care of younger children by shifting parts of part-day programs over to the school-age center.

CAREGIVERS NEEDED NOW Staffing is the primary means CDCs are able to open more slots.

Each center needs more help, Etchell said, and is eager to hire people.

To help with the USAG RP cause, the secretary of defense has made some policy changes with regard to child care and is trying to increase capacity at CDCs by easing hiring practices to get workers in more quickly.

“In many cases the reason why our child development centers are not at full capacity is that we have an insufficient number of providers,” Esper said.

In 2018, it was taking an average of 134 days to hire a civilian, and Esper said his goal is to get it below 60 days.

The garrison advertises entry level positions in classrooms, administrative, support and management positions via USAJobs.gov. Etchell encouraged people to apply, adding that in addition to high placement on the priority list for child care, funding for college classes and many other incentives come with the job.

“If we get enough people to work for us, we can offer as many spaces as the operational capacity of our CDCs will allow,” Etchell said. “We have a very passionate staff that wants to provide the best possible care. They are committed to not only meeting basic needs of the children, but preparing kids with skills to be successful in school and for life.”

KEYS TO SUCCESS Etchell said parents should act quickly after notification of an assignment to find a space they want.

“As quickly as possible, go apply at MilitaryChildCare.com and designate as many child care options as are available. It will really help us help them get the care that they need.”

In reflection, Eckstein said patience and flexibility were the key to getting Lyla into a CDC of choice. “I would say not to settle for one specific day care center. That helped me. I wait listed for all of them, I was going to be happy with whatever I got,” she said.

Mo’ money, no problems; A&FRC helps Airmen budget Starting Jan. 15, the Rheinland Inn dining facility at Ramstein Air Base, will close for renovations. Based on where dorm Airmen live, they may receive either basic allowance for subsistence I or II. BAS is meant to offset the cost of food for service members who aren’t provided meals from their military installation.

For many Airmen in the dorms this will be their first time receiving this allowance. It can be tempting to cash-out their whole pay increase, but it’s always important to live within their means.

“One of the main concerns we’ve had is Airmen going out and using all of their BAS on things like car payments and trips,” said Angelica Williams, 86th Force Support Squadron Airmen and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant.

To combat this, the A&FRC holds one-on-one meetings to help Airmen of all ranks to set up a budget.

“The biggest thing that they can

start off doing right now is developing a budget,” Williams said. “They’ll track how much they’re spending that first month and then go ‘I spent about 400 dollars a month, I still have another 300 dollars.”

By tracking their spending they

can not only prevent future financial troubles but build a better financial foundation as well.

“It’s a good time to look at increasing your investments with the extra money they have after they’ve taken care of their need for food,” Williams

said. “They can definitely prepare for their future during this time by putting into a personal savings or their Thrift Savings Plan.”

US Army combat medic saves airline passenger

by Russell Toof Regional Health Command Europe In a real-life situation reminiscent of something from a movie, a U.S. Army combat medic used the skills she learned from a 17-year career to help an unconscious passenger on a Dec. 14 flight from Portugal to Germany.

“We were about 90 minutes from landing and the flight crew made an announcement that they were looking for a doctor onboard,” said Sgt. 1st Class Teresa Prupis. “Nobody stood up so I did.”

old man passed out in his seat and covered in sweat. “I checked his airway, his breathing, his circulation and asked for what medical equipment they had onboard while my husband helped me get this man out of his seat and onto the floor.”

“I asked the flight attendant to get his legs elevated so more blood would circulate to his vital organs and I applied an oxygen mask,” said Prupis.

“Eventually he came to, we got him back to his seat and I was able to ask questions through an off-duty airline

employee who was able to translate for me.”

“At one point the captain asked if they needed to divert the flight and it was awkward for me because depending on what I said, that’s what was going to happen,” said Prupis. “I told the pilot we could land in Germany as scheduled.”

“We landed in Frankfurt and there was a medical staff and doctor waiting as soon as they opened the door to the plane,” she said. “The Germans knew English so I was able to explain to them what had been happening and what I did. The flight crew thanked me profusely once he was off the plane.”

Amazingly, this was not Prupis’ first time providing medical assistance on a flight. “My family says they don’t want to fly with me anymore,” said Prupis with a smile.

“I’m a person who believes your path is set forward. I’m just apparently in the right place at the right time. It’s a privilege and an honor to do medical care.”

11. She was a police officer in North Carolina but chose to be a combat medic after seeing the care her father received while he battled with and passed away from cancer. “I was taken back by the care he received and the compassion,” she said. “I wanted to

return that care to others.”

The combat medic specialist is primarily responsible for providing emergency medical treatment at the point of injury on the battlefield, limited primary care, and health protection and evacuation from a point of injury or illness.

“Being an Army combat medic is beyond rewarding and I have no regrets about picking this career field. I think the U.S. Army does such a great job training personnel and it’s an honor to assist anywhere.”

LRMC nurse scientist recognized for research, contributions to profession Story & photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Much like Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Pauline Swiger, a nurse scientist and deputy chief of the Center for Nursing Science and Clinical Inquiry at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, is no stranger to asking questions to improve patient outcomes.

Swiger was recently recognized for her career-long contributions to the field of nursing and patient care delivery as one of two active-duty Army nurses receiving a military nursing practice award for 2019.

“I’ve always asked a lot of questions,” said Swiger, a native of Bedford, New Hampshire. “What’s awesome about research is it’s your job to ask ‘why?’ or ‘how can we do it better?’ and to challenge the status quo.”

Being curious is far from the only characteristic which earned Swiger the recognition, as she has been part of numerous studies, authored various professional publications and mentored several junior Army Nurse Corps officers in their pursuit to improve patient outcomes. “(Swiger’s) dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment to her profession and to her peers are unparalleled,” said Dr. Patricia Patrician, who nominated Swiger for the award. “She is always eager to jump in and help struggling colleagues and mentees, leading the way with kindness, tact, and a genuine passion to see others succeed.”

The award is presented to activeduty Army Nurse Corps officers in the ranks of major or lieutenant colonel who have made a noteworthy mark on military nursing and patient care delivery. In addition to the research Swiger has contributed to the nursing field, she’s also initiated a joint-service research interest group with Navy and Air Force counterparts to promote, assist and guide less experienced military nurses toward collaboration and research of their own.

The Centers for Nursing Science and Clinical Inquiry focuses not only on nursing research, but also applying evidence-based best practices to improve LRMC operations and deliver unsurpassed health care to beneficiaries.

“We have a threefold mission: to conduct original research, improve clinical care by implementing evidence, and provide decision support to the hospital,” said Swiger.

Still, corroborations formed through the research and study at LRMC goes beyond the European theatre.

inpatient nurse and head nurse for cadets at the U.S. Military Academy, Swiger deployed with a combat casualty care research team to Baghdad, Iraq, to conduct research focused on mass blood transfusions, analyzing most effective tourniquets for casualties and documenting patient outcomes. Although deployed in the role of a research assistant, Swiger’s dedication to nursing and patient care pushed her to aid when she could.

“What was really awesome about my job was I got to be right there and help them. If there was (a casualty influx) going on, I was a nurse. But when we had enough staff, I was an observer that was gathering information to make important decisions for what we were going to do next, when the next person came in,” said Swiger. “You don’t get enough information or data from civilian institutions to make changes when it comes to trauma. When you’re in theater, there was so much trauma coming through the door.”

Swiger’s deployment drew her interest toward conducting research in efforts to improve military medicine and patient outcomes, leading to a

Master’s degree and eventual Ph.D. in health services research.

“I kind of held on to that experience as a silver lining of all that tragedy. For me, it was like saying, ‘Okay, that stuff is happening. We’re doing the very best we can and we’re working hard to get better’ and I loved that,” said Swiger. “I saw the power of research. The power of thinking in a systems sort of way, using the robust information that was out there to make clinical decisions, and put it together.”

Additionally, Swiger supports overall Army Nurse Corps functions through her work with the Patient CaringTouch System, a patient-centric framework for healthcare delivery designed to reduce nursing care variation and improve patient and nurse outcomes across the enterprise.

Swiger’s interest in progressing nursing practices and mentoring junior Soldiers has led to numerous accolades from colleagues, mentors and mentees.

“Since (earning her doctorate degree) she has had several funded grants and is mentoring junior investigators in their research projects,” said Patrician, a retired Army Nurse Corps officer

who advised Swiger during her Ph.D. “Swiger is the type of professional who will continue to make contributions to the nursing profession, long after she retires from the military.”

Others in the hospital share the same sentiment as Patrician.

“She’s been an awesome mentor so far,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Shelby Müller, staff nurse and assistant officer in charge of LRMC’s Same Day Surgery Clinic. “Having her there has been fantastic. She always thinks of things that I wouldn’t have thought of.”

As part of the Clinical Nurse Transition Program, Müller and her peers presented an evidenced-based research project, as required for all nurses in the course, which led the team to conduct further research and analyze effects of Human-Centric Lighting in the inpatient setting. Müller’s curiosity led to her involvement in a larger project to further research, fund, and implement her research at LRMC with the help of Swiger’s guidance.

“We went from a simple end-oftraining requirement to actually going on and (implementing the research),” said Müller, a native of Paducah, Kentucky. “If you’re sleep deprived, research shows you can have more pain and increased wound healing time. So we’re trying to make an overall better experience for the patients.”

Müller’s project, one of many in which Swiger has been an essential part, will soon be implemented at LRMC’s inpatient ward, providing patients an evidence-based environment which stimulates their healing.

Swiger continues a path toward higher learning, currently attending the Department of Defense’s highest level of officer professional military education, Senior Service College.

Swiger hopes to ultimately contribute to improving the quality of care and processes across the DOD. For now, Swiger is enjoying her role in the Army Nurse Corps and mentoring junior Soldiers, which she considers the greatest asset to military medicine.

“Don’t ever stop asking why, it’s so important. When you’re just not sure about something, when it doesn’t feel like you have a good justification for what you’re doing, it’s such an important time to look at (the process) and ask, ‘What does the evidence say? Is this the right thing for our patients?’” said Swiger. “( Junior Soldiers) are at the point of care day in and day out. I don’t ever want them to think that they are insignificant. When we talk about being a highly reliable organization, where we defer to expertise, the (junior Soldiers) are (those) experts.”

WARTAC course concludes, graduates receive VA job offers Story & photo by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Fifteen transitioning service members from throughout Europe graduated from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Warrior Transition Advancement Course at a ceremony in Sembach, Dec. 19, 2019. Along with certificates came job offers with the VA. The WARTAC program aims to provide graduates who, after leaving the military, are ready to join one of the 56 Regional Veteran Service Centers throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

Fourteen Soldiers and one Airman attended the 10-week course to learn skills needed to become Veterans Service Representatives and handle VA disability claims for fellow veterans.

Every individual received a job offer by the fifth week of the course.

“Many people come to a point where they decide it’s time to take off the uniform, and the question becomes, ‘what’s next?’ That’s what this program is all about – helping them get to what’s next,” said Installation Management Command-Europe Command Sgt. Maj. Samara Pitre, guest speaker for the ceremony.

“These 15 personnel decided they want to continue to serve — they want to continue to serve those who have served in the past just like they did.

They decided to go into this program to see what they can do about helping veterans as they move forward, and they successfully made it through 10-weeks of training so that they can go on and continue to serve as best as they can,” she said.

Army Sgt. Luis Ramos, from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment at Vilseck, Germany, equated transitioning from the military to receiving the green light to jump out of a sky diving plane, only to find that the parachute will not deploy. He explained that the cut-away is there for safe landing should the main parachute be dysfunctional.

“Allow me to paint the picture for you on how I felt 365 days ago,” Ramos said. “I was not ready for the green light from SFL-TAP. My plan to transition out of the Army was failing fast.

WARTAC was the cut-away after the parachute failed… WARTAC provided a safe landing, along with a 10-digit grid that will lead me to the new organization I will call my family.”

“With my brothers and sisters graduating today, I can gladly say that we are all on the same mission; with integrity, respect, commitment and excellence we will advocate for veterans and their families,” he said.

Gregory Cross, VA Central Office training chief and presenter for the ceremony, spoke of the VA’s core values before giving each graduate an ‘I CARE’ pin.

“I CARE – Integrity, Commitment,

Advocacy, Respect, Excellence — these are common traits that we have in the military. They will continue with you throughout your career,” he said to the graduates. “Going forward, starting today, you are a part of the VA.” According to Cross, more than 1,100 individuals have graduated from the WARTAC program since its inception at Fort Belvoir in 2014. This was the second iteration of the course in Europe.

The next WARTAC VSR course will take place April 13-June 25, at Sembach Kaserne. Applicants must be active-duty service members transitioning from the military no later than Oct. 10, and must be available to begin employment no later than Aug. 24. Service members stationed outside local commuting distance can attend WARTAC on permissive temporary duty status.

Once again, the City Image Maintenance Kaiserslautern (Stadt bildpflege) published a new edition of the “Garbage Guide of the City of Kaiserslautern” for 2020.

The garbage guide provides important information for English-speaking citizens on topics such as waste reduction, recycling, re-use, and disposal of waste for the entire municipal area on a total of 32 pages.

The useful brochure shows, for example, the addresses and open-

ing hours of the municipal recycling centers, the locations and dates of the hazardous waste collecting trucks (Umweltmobil) and details regarding the pickup of Christmas trees.

An overview regarding proper waste separation is also provided at the end of the brochure.

All pickup dates in 2020 have already been published on the City Image Maintenance Kaiserslautern home page www.stadtbildpflege-kl.de.

Here private households and businesses can create their own individual pickup schedule for nonrecyclable waste, scrap

paper, cardboard, biodegradable waste and yellow bags. Additionally, upon request, our email service will send customers a timely reminder when and what type of refuse container will be collected the following day.

The garbage guide is available for pickup at the GermanAmerican Community Office, Lauterstrasse 2 in Kaiserslautern, municipal recycling centers, at the “Buergercenter” in the Kaiserslautern Rathaus, in the city’s recycling centers as well as at the City Image Services Center on Daennerstrasse 11.

FIVE SPECTACULAR DAY TRIPS FROM KAISERSLAUTERN

Living in Europe gives you many opportunities to travel far and wide.

Here are a few options for day trips not far from the KMC.

2. TRIER Unless you are new to the area, you’ve probably been to Trier or at least know about it. Trier is Germany’s oldest city and is a great place to spend the day.

They have a downtown area much like Kaiserslautern with plenty of shopping and restaurants. Trier offers a little bit of everything from Roman Baths to craft shopping. Even though it is technically a day trip, you might have to make it more than once since there are so many things to do!

1. FREINSHEIM

Freinsheim is a smaller town in the Bad Durkheim region of Germany. It’s one of those quaint wine villages that we stumbled on one day on a Harley ride. We like it so much that we started looking for events that would bring us back. We have visited the town a couple of times just to wander through the streets and browse the shops. Recently we were there for their Blütenfest to kick off spring and enjoy some wine. Every year, during the month of January they have a night festival that takes you on a torch-carrying tour throughout the town and local vineyards.

Things to Do in Freinsheim: Toy Museum: We haven’t been to this (because we no longer have kids at home), but I can see where young kids would enjoy this.

How to Get There: Freinsheim is approximately a 1 ½-hour train ride from Kaiserslautern. The train station is very close to the city Centre so this is really the most convenient way to get there, es-

Things to Do in Trier: Imperial Roman Baths: The Kaiserthermen or Imperial Baths is a large Roman bath complex. This is also designated as part of the Roman Monuments and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have been here a couple of times and it is definitely worth the 3 € to take a selfguided tour. You can read my blog about our visit here.

How to Get There A drive to Trier is about 1 hour and 20 minutes northwest of Kaiserslautern, 1 hours and 50 minutes southwest of Wiesbaden and 3 hours and 10 minutes northwest of Stuttgart.

I’m sure everyone has heard of Heidelberg and its castle. Actually, it is the first place I heard about from my parents when we learned we would be moving to Germany. It’s the first city they visited back in the sixties when my dad was stationed here during the Vietnam Era. It was also the very first trip we took after arriving and unpacking.

Heidelberg is situated on the Neckar River and is a very popular tourist destination.

Things to Do in Heidelberg: Schloss Heidelberg: A truly impressive castle overlooking the equally impressive town along the river. We were last there in the fall to visit the castle along with the world’s largest wine barrel and the German Pharmacy Museum.

How to Get There The Heidelberg Castle by car is approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes east of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 5 minutes south of Wiesbaden and 1 hours and 30 minutes north of Stuttgart.

Bernkastel is a well-known winegrowing centre on the Mosel River.

The town sits in the valley along the river overlooked by vineyards and a castle. We’ve been there every fall for

their Wine Festival that ends with fireworks over the castle. You can read about our experience here.

The downtown area is a medieval market place zone strictly for pedestrians, which is great because you can enjoy it without the annoyance of cars.

Some of the houses, dating as far back as the 15th century, are a little crooked yet have stood the test of time while others are a bit more spacious. There are plenty of little stores, pubs and cafes as well as historic places.

Things to do in Bernkastel-Kues: Mosel Wein Museum: This multimedia museum will give you a much better understanding of the region’s winemaking traditions. Guided tours and wine sampling are available daily.

How to Get There Bernkastel is an easy one hour or so drive from Ramstein. It’s an hour and 20 minutes northwest of Kaiserslautern, 1 hours and 25 minutes west of Wiesbaden and 3 hours and 10 minutes northwest of Stuttgart.

This is by no means an entire list of all of the things to do in these towns. It is simply a recommendation for where to start. Go explore!
