Air Force commissions first female Muslim chaplain Story & photos by Tech. Sgt. Armando A. Schwier-Morales Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs In a room full of family, friends and mentors, history was made with the affirmation “So help me God.” Chaplain candidate Saleha Jabeen was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Chicago at the Catholic Theological Union by the Air Force chief of chaplains, Dec. 18, 2019, becoming the first female Muslim chaplain in the Department of the Defense. “I first came to the United States 14 years ago as an international student,” Jabeen said. NCOs gain school attendance flexibility from EPME self-registration platform by Kat Bailey Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs The Air Force’s Personnel Center has created a self-registration scheduling system for all in-residence enlisted professional military education courses for active-duty noncommissioned officers. The new scheduling system allows NCOs to choose when they attend the NCO Academy, Senior NCO Academy and Chief Leadership Course once they have been notified they are eligible to attend. Resident EPME completion became required for promotion to the ranks of staff, master and chief master sergeant begin-
ning with the 2018 promotion cycle. “The self-registration system gives NCOs flexibility and control over their professional education,” said Chief Master Sgt. Dan Hoglund, AFPC’s command chief. “We’re really focused on making the right adaptations to our processes to ensure we are enabling a system that is simple, transparent, agile and responsive to the Air Force’s and Airmen’s needs.” Eligible NCOs will receive an email from myPers in either June or December depending on when they become eligible. They will have 60 days to prioritize their preferred class dates for school attendance by

AFPC will then fill any remaining open seats with those eligible Airmen who did not respond to the self-registration requirement, based on rank and time-in-grade. Jabeen followed her brother into the Army where more lessons about her goals and dreams came to light. While in the Army Medical Corps, Jabeen received opportunities to work alongside chaplains and help out her fellow Soldiers. “My brother has been the source of my inspiration,” Jabeen said. “It was because of his dedication and getting to see his military career that I recognized the importance
of the chaplaincy in the armed forces. I saw that when one member gets deployed, all of their family members join them.” During her time in the Army, Jabeen met Army 1st Lt. Jamal Bey, from the 451st Civil Affairs Battalion. They became good friends and mentored each other. When Jabeen told Bey about her dream of becomimg a Muslim chaplain, Bey at the time didn’t have a reference point but he supported Jabeen in blazing a trail for being the first. “The commissioning of Saleha is great because as a father you want to be able to tell your children that they can be anything,” Bey said at Jabeen’s commissioning ceremony. “I now have Jabeen to point to as an example of a woman that broke this barrier.” Air Force chaplains are

religious ministry professionals who support the spiritual needs of Airmen around the world. The Department of Defense has service members of many faiths and those of no faith, but the DoD didn’t have a female Imam, a spiritual leader in Islam. “Any time we advance religious freedoms, it’s a win for all persons of faith,” said Maj. Gen. Steven Schaick, Air Force chief of chaplains. “The fact is America is a place where the Constitution guarantees your freedom to embrace or abstain from religious ideals, and the
Chaplain Corps, which Jabeen just entered, exists to ensure every Airman has a religious freedom advocate. This is a big day not just for Muslims, but for persons of all faiths. I could not be more proud of our Air Force for being willing to commission and embrace the first female Imam in the Department of Defense.” Jabeen was endorsed by the Islamic Society of North America to become the first female Muslim chaplain in the Department of Defense. But, Jabeen’s journey in the Air Force chaplaincy has just
begun. She is scheduled to complete training and will then be assigned to a duty station where she will support Airmen. Along the way, she hopes to continue inspiring people and breaking barriers. “When other people look at what I have done, I want them to know that God has a plan for you and to go out there and be the best version of yourself and accomplish the mission you were specifically designed to complete. Don’t let anyone or anything stop you and when they try — be kind, be generous, be resilient and don’t quit.”

Air Force announces Spark Tank 2020 selectees The selectees to present at Spark Tank 2020 are:
As the Air Force continues to build an organizational culture that empowers intrepreneurs, it doesn’t hurt to celebrate them and give them a stage to share their projects too. It’s been nearly a year since Master Sgt. Jonathan Maas was selected to present his prototype of a renewableenergy chemical agent detector during Spark Tank 2019, alongside five other ideas from Airmen across the force. With the arrival of 2020, the Air Force has selected six more ideas to be shared directly with Air Force senior leaders at the Air Force Association’s Air Warfare Symposium, Feb. 28 in Orlando, Florida. “Spark Tank is a chance to celebrate our Air Force risk-takers, idea makers and entrepreneurs who refuse to accept the status quo, and have determined their own fate by developing solutions that make it easier for us to bring our very best to the fight,” said Lauren Knausenberger, Spark Tank director. The selection process looked at the need for specific capabilities as well as concerns of safety, policy, Air Forcewide implementation, technical feasibility and scalability. Spark Tank also offers Airmen the opportunity to get their ideas in front of key enabling agencies that can share expertise and resources such as funding or personnel for the projects being
presented and demonstrate pathways for intrepreneurs to make their initiatives successful. Although only six ideas will be pitched on stage at this year’s Spark Tank, more than 200 Airmen took the plunge and submitted ideas during the campaign on the Air Force’s Ideation Platform, which spurred multiple mini-events at the major command level connecting Airmen with local resources such as public affairs, contracting and legal. Key themes included improved task management, commercial best practices for healthcare, workforce development, automation, maintenance, airfield assessment innovation and suicide detection and prevention. “When it comes to finding new and creative ways to improve our Air Force, often times, we don’t have to look any further than our own teammates,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. “It’s incumbent upon us as leaders to encourage creativity in problem solving. We must create a culture where Airmen are often trying, sometimes failing, and never giving up. This is how truly innovative teams get ahead. We owe it to our team, and to our nation, to do everything we can to bring the best ideas forward with programs like Spark Tank.”

CMSgt takes a leap of faith U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jackie Harris, 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group superintendent, locks hands and prays with a member of the church at Kaiserslautern - City Mission, Dec. 7, 2019. On Jan. 1, Harris officially retired from the U.S. Air Force after 27 years of service.
Story by Senior Airman Kristof Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In Dec. 2019, U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jackie Harris, 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group superintendent, retired after 27 years of service. The close of this chapter provides Harris the opportunity to focus on a different type of service. Harris, with his wife, Senetra, will continue serving as pastors for Kaiserslautern-City Mission, an extension of the Ramstein Air Base Chaplain and Religious Services. There is rarely a better opportunity than a holiday communion to showcase the true impact that the church’s volunteers have on the surrounding community. Earlier this month, a holiday service
led by Harris was held at the church located in the center of “K-Town.” Dozens of German families showed up for the night’s festivities. Pastors, volunteers (almost all U.S. service members) and German families participated in prayer and shared laughs. They ate together, drank together and sang together. Towards the service’s conclusion, German families received gift baskets containing non-perishables and holiday related items while the German children received their own individual presents. The faces of each child lit up as they received their gift. In total, the church handed out 1500 dollars worth of children’s presents during the Dec. 7 holiday service. “It’s important to keep in mind we do things like this for the community on a regular basis,” said Harris. “This isn’t a
Local families wait to receive a gift-basket full of non-perishables and holiday related items following the conclusion of the holiday service at Kaiserslautern - City Mission church in Kaiserslautern, Dec. 7, 2019. one-off type of event.” Every Saturday, the church distributes donated bread and pastries to the community. Danny Triscas, KaiserslauternCity Mission associate pastor, stated last year alone, 37,000 dollars worth of bread and pastries were distributed to the community. Six times per year, KaiserslauternCity Mission passes out donated clothing to German families in the community. A vast majority of the donated clothing comes from military members on Ramstein. “You know, maybe these families are PCSing from Ramstein or maybe they work out a lot so they grow out of their clothes, but either way, a lot of what we receive for our clothing distribution are from military families and we are really appreciative for that,” said Triscas, pastor and close friend of Harris. “We receive great brand name clothing 100 percent for free and give it back to the community for free.” Running a food bank is another way the church and its volunteers stay actively engaged with the community. In one food drive held for the KaiserslauternCity Mission church last year, 4,000 pounds of food were collectively raised after two flights on Ramstein competed to see who could raise the most food. Triscas said there are a lot of families in need, and through the food bank they are able to assist those in the most dire of situations. With bread and pastry distribution, clothing distribution and food banks, is this magnitude of relief warranted and necessary to help keep families heads above water? Does Kaiserslautern need this support? “Absolutely, what we do here is nec-
Page 5 essary,” said Triscas. “Kaiserslautern has a 30 percent poverty rate. I can’t believe it, but that just means we have a calling and a reason to be right here, at this time, serving the community.” As pastor of 14 years, Harris agrees with Triscas’ sentiment. However, the decision to remain in Germany following Harris’ military retirement didn’t come without sacrifices. “I’m going to be honest, the decision to remain here in Germany was difficult,” said Harris. “We have our kids and our family back in the states. There’s something compelling though about being in a place you believe you were called to be in.” In addition to the challenge of being far from family, there is some anxiety as the Harris family explore life without the military. “There is some anxiety and trepidation on one end because all we’ve known for 27 years is the Air Force,” said Harris. Harris’ retirement, however, lifts a weight off of his shoulders as he is now able to concentrate and put his time and effort into the ministry. “Both the Air Force and the ministry are 24/7 kind of jobs,” said Harris. “My heart and priorities are with God and yet the Air Force brought me over here so I fulfilled those duties to the best of my ability. The fact that I can retire over here from the 693rd ISRG, a unit I love, is a blessing. I feel blessed in general to have served 27 years in the Air Force and to have the opportunity I do now to continue serving with the ministry.” City Mission is a Ministry to the Military, with a rich history of serving the KMC for approximately 60 years. Using language borrowed from U.S. Air Force General Tod D. Wolters, former United States Air Forces in Europe and Africa commander, Harris states, “while City Mission is a Ministry to the Military church, with so many U.S. service members volunteering their time and giving back to the community, it is clear that a major part of the organization’s success can only happen, By, With, and Through the Military.”
Danny Triscas, Kaiserslautern-City Mission associate pastor, speaks from the heart during prayer towards the end of the holiday service on Dec. 7, 2019. Triscas is a close friend of recently retired Chief Master Sgt. Jackie Harris, 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group superintendent.

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, ILL. U.S. mili-
tary C-17 Globemaster III aircraft often arrive at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, and Travis Air Force Base, California, from foreign locales, transporting cargo, but also at times, ill or injured service members returning stateside for continuing medical treatment. As the Department of Defense’s single manager for global patient movement, U.S. Transportation Command conducts this lifesaving mission via the U.S. Air Force’s aeromedical evacuation system, which provides in-transit health care for America’s wounded warriors from the point of injury or illness to medical facilities with the level of care needed to properly treat their medical conditions. From JBA and Travis Air Force Base, some patients, dependent on medical condition and/or servicedirected requirements, are subsequently transported to other locations within the continental U.S. to reach the best facility for their particular circumstances. “On a weekly basis, USTRANSCOM moves up to 40 patients from overseas to CONUS, with a broad set of final medical destinations,” said U.S. Air Force Col. John Andrus, command surgeon,
USTRANSCOM. “Just like in our overseas theaters of operation, the weekly movement of DOD patients across the United States involves the USTRANSCOM Patient Movement Requirements Center–Americas, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, validating the patient(s) and the 618th Air Operations Center (Tanker Airlift Control Center) also at Scott, coordinating the aircraft from JBA or Travis AFB to the final medical treatment destination. When military aircraft are not available, contract air ambulances are used.” Using a hub ( JBA/Travis Air Force Base) and spoke (final definitive care destination(s)) system, the CONUS patient distribution process can manage current workload. Contingency planning and patient movement exercises continue to refine and advance the interagency effort that would be required to accommodate a larger number of ill and injured servicemembers coming back from a large-scale conflict or contingency. When needed, military, Veterans Affairs’, and National Disaster Medical System hospital beds across the nation are identified through a collaboration between the Departments of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security, as well as the DOD and VA. Patients are assigned and moved to those beds through a hub and spoke

transportation system. For example, the Army, Air Force, Navy, and the VA operate over 60 Federal Coordinating Centers, which serve as patient reception hubs and spokes throughout America. This system gives returning wounded warriors access to military, VA, and NDMS beds, as required. “Established in 1984 and managed by HHS, the NDMS demonstrates a whole-of-government approach in receiving — and treating — large numbers of patients. For instance, during a contingency, such as a hurricane or earthquake, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is the lead federal agency, would identify DOD and VA FCCs to support the contingency,” stated U.S. Navy LCDR Liza Soza, U.S. Public Health Service, HHS’ liaison officer, USTRANSCOM’s Command Surgeon Directorate. “Whether in a defense support of civil authorities’ situation or conflict, FCCs serve as a critical component in the CONUS patient distribution system, enabling a coordinated and comprehensive response that enhances our wounded warfighters’ medical treatment, and ultimately, their survivability.” Annually, the USTRANSCOMled Ultimate Caduceus commandpost and field-training exercise evaluates the command’s capability and capacity to conduct global patient
movement in a contingency or conflict, as well as assesses the interoperability across services, government, and interagency partners. This year’s exercise occurs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in June, and will feature significant VA participation. The host installation will act as the FCC hub, distributing patients to spoke medical treatment facilities located in nine nearby metropolitan areas. “As the lead for global patient movement, USTRANSCOM ensures the safe, secure, and sound transport of our nation’s wounded warfighters inside and outside of CONUS,” Andrus said. “Throughout the 24/7 process, our incredible team executes this unique mission with the utmost professionalism, precision, and proficiency, always putting each patient — and their medical care — first and foremost.” USTRANSCOM exists as a warfighting combatant command to project and sustain military power at a time and place of the nation’s choosing. Powered by dedicated men and women, we underwrite the lethality of the Joint Force, we advance American interests around the globe, and we provide our nation’s leaders with strategic flexibility to select from multiple options, while creating multiple dilemmas for our adversaries.

by Airman 1st Class Jennifer Gonzales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The dining facility closed on Jan. 15 due to some much-needed renovations, and it looks like it’ll be out of commission for about 18-25 months. Many Airmen, myself included, may be wondering where their next meal is coming from and what it’s going to cost. There’s no need to worry, though. U.S. Air Force Capt. Lynnsee Moberg, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron nutrition programs manager, wants to help. She’s a registered dietitian, certified specialist in sports dietetics and has a master’s in nutrition and exercise physiology. Currently, Moberg is conducting hands-on, healthy cooking demonstrations where she teaches how to use a crockpot, knife-cutting techniques, and maximizing the use of your microwave. Additionally, Moberg has recipe books available that tie into the cooking lessons, so snag one when you get a chance. The books contain groceries listed by food group, tools to have in your dorm, tips on food storage, and ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner so you don’t have to wreck your brain about what to do with all that food you might buy. There are plenty of alternative plac-
es to eat, too. Jawbone Flight Kitchen in building 3332, next to the passenger terminal, is a great choice to grab a meal. It’s open 24/7, so, for those working a midnight or swing shift, they’ve got you covered. The Base Exchange has plenty of options, however, most of the food places there are “fast food.” On the bright side, the food court has “Salad Wednesdays” and post calorie information so you can be aware of how much you’re really eating. Regarding expenses, some Airmen living in the dorms will get an increase in basic allowance for subsistence to compensate for the cost of purchasing food. Ramstein dorm residents will get double BAS — totaling 738.78 dollars added to their monthly paychecks, plus the cost of living allowance. For those living at Kapaun or Vogelweh, they’ll see the standard BAS of 369.39 dollars, and COLA as well. The extra BAS means purchasing any cooking utensils shouldn’t be a problem. If it’s concerning, check out the Airman’s Attic. They often harbor some pretty nifty stuff ! The Airman’s Attic is in building 2162, next to the barber shop. They’re open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays to E-4 and below. With all that said, these cooking lessons are a wonderful idea and I
encourage those that live in the dorms to attend. After all, who doesn’t like free food? You may even get some free cookware, too, as well as the recipe book. For more information on these
demonstrations, contact Capt. Moberg at DSN 480-1689. If you’re concerned about budgeting or managing expenses, you can contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center for information and assistance at DSN 480-5100 or civ 06371-47-5100.

January 17, 2020 something few Americans get to do,” said 27-year-old Sierra. In preparing for their first child, Cocoa, Florida natives, used LRMC’s services for expecting parents such as prenatal care and learning opportunities. The hospital provides a full range of specialty services for over 250,000 eligible beneficiaries throughout Europe, Western Asia, and Africa to include high-risk prenatal care, genetics counseling and screening and breastfeeding education. “We pride ourselves in providing compassionate, patientcentered care consistent with our professional association guidelines and standards of practice,” said Lt. Col. Jerremie Siegfried, chief, Division of Women’s Health and Newborn Care at LRMC. “Our staff consists of a team of OB/ GYN Physicians, Certified Nurse Midwives, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Health Technicians and Medical Support Assistants committed to serving our beneficiaries’ health care needs and providing them with the best experi-
ence possible.” In 2019, over 760 newborns were delivered at LRMC. Labor and delivery staff estimates an average of 750 deliveries per year at LRMC. Additionally, there is an average of 3-5 couples with a new addition to their families staying at LRMC each day at the hospital’s private rooms with pull-out beds for dad or guests. The Mother-Baby Unit also maintains a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, “special delivery” meals, a Neonatal Critical Care Air Transport Team and neonatal ground transport teams. According to the Dubles, currently at their first duty station, the staff and education received at LRMC has prepared them as they start their family at the only forward-stationed medical center for U.S. and Coalition Forces. “It’s been a learning curve for us to prepare for parenthood,” said Sierra. “Every nurse we’ve had during our stay, and everyone else have been pretty good (delivering patient care). We really enjoyed it.”

Specialized training strengthens LRMC care for critically-ill patients

Story & photos by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Critical care nurses at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center recently participated in training to familiarize themselves with Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies, to advance capabilities of LRMC’s Intensive Care Unit for patients with kidney failure. A two-week long training session at Brooke Army Medical Center provided a pair of LRMC critical care nurses with hands-on training operating and troubleshooting dialysis equipment used in continuous 24 hour-per-day therapy. The training marks the first time LRMC ICU nurses have traveled overseas for CRRT training. “(BAMC) has a fair amount of (CRRT) patients, as the Defense Department’s only Level 1 Trauma Center,” said Petra Wine, one of the
critical care nurses who participated in the training. “We do need (CRRT capabilities) because it is our mission, to stabilize our patients and then send them (to the United States for further care).” Wine, along with U.S. Army Capt. Arfan Malik, a staff nurse at LRMC’s ICU, are tasked to function as subject matter experts for CRRT training at LRMC to magnify current capabilities. “It is essential for Army Critical Care Nurses to maintain their skill set especially at LRMC, since we randomly receive patients from various locations throughout Europe, Asia and Africa who may require CRRT,” said Malik. “There is also potential for nurses to fly with the patient and the (Critical Care Air Transport Team) if needed for better patient outcomes, even more reason for us to maintain our skills.” As casualty rates from combat
have decreased, the need for retraining focused on specialized care, such as CRRT, was recognized in the ICU. Additionally, the unique position of LRMC as an American hospital on foreign land further complicates opportunities available for hands-on training outside the military treatment facility. The intensive therapy and language barrier also complicates options for patients and their families, adding unnecessary stress to a difficult situation. Nurses may also be limited in their scope of practice at host-nation medical facilities. According to Wine, simulation training for CRRT limits the unexpected interruptions which may exist with real patients. For the ICU Nursing Team, the hands-on training received at BAMC with actual patients under supervision maximizes
their exposure and competence to the modality. “We need to be ready for our service members when they come and when they’re injured,” said Wine. “This is what we’re here for, so we should give them the best care we can and we need to train up so that we are ready.” Eventually, the ICU hopes to develop more CRRT champions to evenly disburse responsibilities and provide 24/7 CRRT coverage at LRMC. Although some cases of kidney failure is linked to illness and disease, acute intrinsic kidney failure is caused by physical trauma, such as vehicle accidents, leaving a dire need for nurses to be well trained in CRRT operation and troubleshooting. “There’s constant ongoing training, and there’s a constant desire from the nurses to take care of these patients so they don’t lose those skills,” said Wine.

Wellness program helps garrison employees reach goals in 2020
Community members exercise at Landstuhl Physical Fitness Center, one of the seven Army fitness centers at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. With the Army Civilian Wellness Program, supervisors can authorize up to three hours of paid excused absence per week for employees to participate in wellness activities.
Story & photo by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz employees have support reaching 2020 wellness goals thanks to the Army Civilian Wellness Program. The program encourages civilian employees to develop mental and physical health to enhance quality of life and productivity by allowing supervisors to authorize up to three hours of paid excused absence per week to participate in wellness activities. “The workforce is the cornerstone of everything we do, and we must always invest in that,” said Dr. Kevin Griess, deputy garrison commander. “But the most important part is that we invest in ourselves. Self-care is the cornerstone of our own lives – being productive, living long, being healthy, being ready to come to work and support our teammates, and being ready to get the mission done.” “Just like we expect our Soldiers to be fit to fight, for our civilian force it’s important that we have the opportunity to maintain our fitness as well,” added Margaret Bunton, workforce program development specialist. “Fitness is all about a balance – it’s
not just the physical part, it’s what you’re eating, what you’re putting into your body and everything else that’s going on with you,” she said. “It’s mental and physical and if there are classes available for an employee to take that can improve upon those areas, like a nutrition class, that all falls into civilian wellness as well. It’s not just about going to the gym and working out, it’s about the overall holistic fitness approach.” Per the policy, a CWP activity is any activity designed to improve or maintain an employee’s physical and mental health, which may include but is not limited to: cardiovascular endurance, meditation, yoga, muscular strength and endurance, therapy, flexibility, and group or individual sports. The program isn’t new to the Army or to the garrison, but an increased emphasis in 2020 is part of what Bunton said is “the overall initiative of the garrison to make sure employees have everything they need to be happy and healthy.” The CWP is available to fulltime Non-Appropriated Fund, Appropriated Fund and Local National civilian employees assigned to the garrison. Participation may include up to three hours of duty time per week, with
times agreed upon by the participant and supervisor. The program is not to exceed six consecutive months and can be used one time for every three years of service with the U.S. Army. Along with promoting the program to her fellow workforce, Bunton is also participating in it. With two young children at home and a husband working shift, Bunton said some days she wasn’t making it to the gym until 10 p.m., which put her to bed after midnight and didn’t allow for a solid night of sleep. “The program has been helpful – I don’t have to work out at 10 p.m. anymore,” she said. Bunton arranged with her supervisor to leave work one hour early three days a week, when workload and mission allows, and uses that hour to exercise so the rest of the evening can be spent with her family. “Being able to get out [early] and work out, it does something for the mental, and for me it’s very important to be able to have that outlet,” Bunton said. “Knowing I can come to work, do my job, and have time to take care of myself, really does make a difference in work performance and energy level. If I can work out at the end of the day between 4 and 5 p.m. versus at 10 p.m.,
it frees up my time in the evening so that I can go to bed on time.” Also participating in the program is the deputy garrison commander. “I am part of the program myself and it is very difficult to break away from work, to walk away from the emails and things like that, but I have to do it – I take the time because this is important,” Griess said. “I’ve lost weight and personally I feel better mentally and physically.” Griess said he wishes he started with the program sooner, and he doesn’t want other people on his team to wait as long as he did. “We wanted to dust off the program and remind people that it’s available and should be used. Supervisors and employees alike should ask for it and continue forward to make themselves healthy. We want people to take advantage of it and be healthier and more positive,” he said. To enroll in the program, employees should talk to their supervisors and work together to fill out the enrollment packet available from the Workforce Development (Task Force 5) Office. More information may be requested from TF5 at DSN 541-3012 or civ 0611-143-541-3012.

Survivors Guide to Recycling by Vincent Jassak MilitaryinGermany.com
The Brown Bin (Bioabfälle) : This bin is meant for organic or biodegradable waste. Here’s what goes in this bin: grass clippings and weeds, coffee filters, tea bags, vegetable and fruit scraps, eggshells, bread, used paper towels and napkins, nut shells, banana and citrus peels
and leftover cooked food. This container is also collected every two weeks, alternating with the black bin. Summertime can be interesting as this bin sits in the heat; so you can wrap any left over food and meats in used paper towels to keep the bin smelling more fresh (sort of )! Remember, raw foods go in the black bin. The Blue Bin (Papiertonne): This container is meant for most paper products. This includes: newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, books, envelopes, file folders and items like cereal boxes. This bin may get full quickly, especially around your PCS time. This also takes some planning and breakdown of boxes since it is only picked up once a month. In my house, we tend to fill this before the 4 weeks are over.
The Yellow Bags (Gelbe Säcke): These yellow bags can be picked up at your local government office. In my town they are distributed at the Verbandsgemeindeverwaltung. (Have you noticed Germans like to connect words together to make a new one?) They are free and, for us, are used for a majority of our trash. Here’s what goes in them: any plastic bottles, plastic wrappers, plastic containers (yogurt, margarine, etc.), any styrofoam packaging, any metal food or drink cans, any aluminum food containers and foil, including yogurt tops, bottle caps, empty spray cans, juice and milk cartons. Things like sponges, old CDs, outdoor furniture or plastic toys do not go here. They should go in the black bin. These bags are collected the same day as the black bin. Glass: In your area, you will see dome-shaped containers, usually in groups of three. These are meant for glass. The three containers correspond to the color of the glass: brown, clear and green. This is usually an every-other-week trip for us, so it is not too bad. As you may have noticed, glass is used more often here; make sure the container you have does not have a pfand. This is a bottle deposit that you paid when you bought the item. It is usually applied to beer and water bottles and dairy products like yogurt.

The Black Bin (Restmüll): This container is meant for what is considered general garbage. The general rule is that items placed in here are no longer usable and not recyclable. This includes: vacuum cleaner bags, used diapers, raw meats and food, worn-out shoes and clothing, cigarette butts, kitty litter and dog waste, soiled paper, old pots and dishes, toothbrushes, etc. As you can see, there is very little that should go in this container. This container is collected every two weeks, alternating with the brown Bio bin.

Recycling can be one of the more daunting tasks when living in Germany. Here is a cheat sheet about Kaiserslautern County’s recycling “rules.” If you live outside of the county, your regulations may be different. Please check with your local government office to verify what you need to do. Basically, in Kaiserslautern, there are five different types of recycling. Four of these five, waste, paper, compost, plastics and metal, are usually taken care of at your home location and the fifth, glass, is done in a centralized area in town. Here, by name and color, are some dos and don’ts about what belongs in each bin:

MERZIG – WOLF PARK
Photo by Nadezda Murmakova / Shutterstock.com
When we moved into our home, our landlord informed us that hunting wild boar was a popular pastime in our village. Of course, we haven’t seen the slightest hint of a boar in three years. But perhaps this awareness of living “amongst wild beasts” has left me with a skewed perception of my survival skills. That might explain why I packed up my husband and dog and brought them to a wolf park.

INTRODUCING: J’TRAINE’
Page 25 Advertisement
Soul, R’n’B, Jazz & American European Connection (AEC)
J’Traine’ is a group of professional musicians, singers, and instrumentalists from America, South America, and Europe. These continental diversities are the signature trademark of J’Traine’. Their mission is to provide professional quality live and recorded music, to bring enjoyment to you, and have fun doing it. The members’ musical backgrounds include classical music, jazz, smooth jazz, Brazilian jazz, soul music, rhythm
and blues, and popular music. The diversity of this group can be found in the live music programs in various venues all over Germany as well in their first CD “RightOn!” to be released this month. You’ll be able to purchase it online or as a digital download (i.e. on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and more). You can listen to samples on their website. The high energy, savvy social media skills, and progressive nature of the younger members tempered by the experience and wisdom of older members makes J’Traine’ unique. They have earned a reputation as one of the most diverse, talented and professional groups in recent time. On stage, you’ll find up to 13 musicians at a time playing the keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, saxophone and vocals creating a
musical conversation surely brining joy to your heart and rhythm to your body — making it irresistible not to get up and dance. The group plays a variety of genres ranging from the seventies and eighties dance music to a smooth jazz or R’nB’ selection. They love to change out their set at each gig, keeping it fresh and interesting, so the audience will never hear the same lineup when they see J’Traine’ multiple times. The founder Grant Jones has been in the music industry for over 40 years now. In his youth, he was totally taken by the thunderous thump of the bass and made it his goal to be as good as the infamous Gary King, focussing on mastering the bass with its articulate, warm, and clear presence, much like his idol.
Grant has recently taken his passion about music from “just” playing and entertaining to another level. He founded AEC — American European Connection — which is geared towards individual artists and groups looking for a consultation platform to help guide them through the process of managing and monitoring their own success. AEC has different tools to choose from consisting of media, digital and conventional components which have been proven to be effective. You can easily create a platform tailored to your needs and budget. Let AEC be the professional support you need to get your music off of the ground and out in the open. Contact: Grant Jones Web: www.jtraine.com Mail: info@jtraine.com Facebook: @JTraine2019 Mobile: 0174 4701320 Now it’s time to hop on the J’Traine’ for a journey of great live music with fantastic people who share your love and passion for a fun filled evening. Next gig: February 15, 2020 Seehotel, Gelterswoog 20, 67661 Kaiserslautern Dinner & Live Music: € 47.50, starts at 7 p.m. Live music only: € 22.00, starts at 9 p.m. Reservations: 0174 4701320 or 0631 35300
