To the men and women of the 86th Airlift Wing, After three quarters of a century, our wing and its Airmen continue to answer our nation’s call. Through the years, we have delivered airpower through bombardment, air defense, reconnaissance, and close air support. Today, across six countries our Airmen stand ready to project U.S. and NATO airpower if and when called upon. Although time and the global landscape are continually changing, there are certain fundamentals that remain con-

stant. It is these fundamentals that must forge our daily battle rhythm.

COMMENTARY: leading through adversity

by Lt. Col. Alexis Johnson 86th Civil Engineering Squadron commander Am I the only one that thought 2020 was a crazy, yet revealing year? From the COVID-19 pandemic, the wildfires that plagued Australia, the missile attack on Balad Air Base, the untimely death of the great Kobe Bryant, to the numerous protests of the racial injustice that struck the United States at her core…2020 was an emotional roller coaster of a year. I would be lying if I told you 2020 did not affect me.

On the contrary, it affected me on a professional and personal level. But more than that, I wondered how the events were affecting my Airmen. To my surprise, which should not have come as a surprise, my young Airmen were stepping up and leading through the vast array of adversity. And I was very proud.

These young Airmen did not shy away from having those tough conversations, from finding new ways of leading through a pandemic, and displaying maturity and humility enough to listen and show empathy. That is what is so great about the U.S. military; our differences make us

stronger, and has since President Truman’s Executive Order 9981 in 1948 was issued to abolish discrimination “on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin” in the armed forces. The U.S. military was one of the first American institutes to integrate, and has been a leader in every respectable category ever since.

People around the world look towards the U.S. military as the example due to our values, our resilience, our fight, and our hope. These same pillars are what young Airmen displayed in 2020.

One such great leader approached myself and the rest of my squadron leadership and said, “I think we need to do something. We need to all talk, we need to listen to each other’s stories to get a better understanding of what people are going through and how the events in the United States are affecting us.”

This was well before the Air Force recommended to conduct small group discussion.

He saw a problem, and he knew that if it affected one person, it affected us all. So he started the small group discussions within the Fire Department, and then

expanded to the rest of the squadron. And guess what… it worked! This young Airman shared his story of the racism, injustice, and judgment he experienced and it opened others to speak up. People listened, they showed empathy, and you heard responses such as, “wow, I would have never known”, and, “that has never happened to me,” and “I could not have imagined” and many more.

One of my Airmen approached me one day and asked if I had a story to share.

I paused for a second because I had so many, and I honestly did not want to walk down memory lane of all the racial injustice, bigotry, sexism, and other injustices that I experienced directly and indirectly. But I told my story. I told them how I was born in a predominantly Black city of Memphis, Tennessee, and my dad’s job transferred us to Atlanta, Georgia. My family and I settled in a small city south of Atlanta called Jonesboro. It is famously known as the location where “Gone with the Wind” was filmed. We moved into a house in a predominantly white neighborhood, and were about one of three Black families. I remember like it was yesterday, after our second day at the house, we woke up to our garage spray painted with, “Go Home …” You can imagine what unspeakable words were on the garage. I recall walking to the grocery store to buy candy and the cashier telling me to “Go back to Africa.” On Saturdays, my dad would take my sister and I to the carwash to help wash his car. In the distance I saw a large crowd gathering at the carwash. I asked my dad what the words on their signs meant. He immediately told my sister and I to get into the car.

He drove us home and dropped us off. He went into his closet and retrieved his shotgun, put it in his car, and went back to the carwash to finish washing his

car. I overheard him telling my mom later that night that there was a Klan rally and fundraiser at the carwash. That was the first time I heard anything about the Klan. I was nine. My third grade teacher purposely placed me in the back of the classroom. I did not understand why, I thought it was because I was the tallest one in class. On the last day of class, she called my mom to have a parent/teacher conference. I was outside the classroom as my mom was speaking to my teacher. After five minutes, my mom immediately left the classroom, took my hand and walked me out of the school. My mom was, and still is, an educator.

My teacher was telling her that she was recommending to enroll me into Special Education and keep me in the 3rd grade that next year. I could not understand. I was making straight A’s.

However, my teacher was telling my mom that I was cheating off my classmates, but could not prove it. My mom went to the Principal and then to the Board of Education to file a complaint.

Of course my teacher’s false claims did not hold and I moved on to the 4th grade. After that ordeal, my parents sat my sister and I down to have that “tough conversation” of what we may experience in this world due to the color of our skin. I was nine. This was not the 1950s or ‘60s. This was 1991.

Discrimination did not stop in grade school, nor college, but I also experienced it while in our Air Force. My first day of active duty was at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, I can recall the First Sergeant introducing himself and then providing me a list of cities in the area to stay away from. This was 2005, not the ‘50s or ‘60s. One day, I found myself in one of these “cities” pumping gas in my car. Out of nowhere, two large trucks start to encircle me. The guys in the passenger seat begin to light matches and throw them

at me as I was pumping gas. I ran inside the store and told the cashier to call 911. I reported the incident to the Office of Special Investigations the next day. I will never forget that day.

I recall as a young 2nd Lt. briefing my squadron and someone out in the crowd called me out by my name. I looked towards my leadership for a response, to have my back, or even openly discipline the person. And I got nothing. I was told that I was in a male-dominated career field and to get used to it. I remember requesting initial feedback from my first squadron commander, and he cancelled all eight of my initial requests. And then looking at my male white counterparts asking for initial feedback, and they were receiving the feedback immediately. I had enough. I told myself that I would never do that to any of my Airmen. I would stand up for them, I would provide feedback immediately, have a voice for them when others would not.

I still keep that promise and determination to this day.

So to all of the young Airmen who stepped up to the call, thank you for having the courage to say something and make things happen. Leadership can happen at the lowest level, and the Airmen have showed us the leaders that they are. I want to thank my fellow squadron commanders here at Ramstein for also having the courage to have these tough conversations, not only within their Squadrons, but with each other. I hope they all understand of how grateful I am that we can talk to each other peer to peer. Although we have our differences, we can still relate. It takes courage to step out when you know others will not follow you, and it takes courage to speak up. The diversity of our military is great, and is what makes us stronger. Let us continue to step out in courage, have the conversations, and lead the way.

173 Airborne, 37 AS enhance interoperability Story and photos by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade joined forces with the 37th Airlift Squadron to conduct a rapid deployment exercise of personnel and equipment on Jan. 20.

“This joint exercise by the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 86th Airlift Wing demonstrates that the 173rd Air Brigade can rapidly deploy from anywhere to meet our Army Contingency Response Force mission in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Josh Brown 1-91 CAV commander.

As part of the Army Contingency Response Force in Europe, elements of the 173rd Air Brigade can rapidly deploy to conduct contingency operations in Europe, Africa and Asia. To do this well, both organizations coordinate regularly to conduct these deployment readiness exercises.

Since Aug. 2020, the 173rd Air Brigade has expanded its responsibilities, aligning with the U.S Army’s Southern European Task Force – Africa, and gaining expanded alert requirements supporting U.S. Africa Command in addition to U.S. European Command.

“The Air Brigade is a rapidly deployable, Airborne Cavalry Squadron responsible for maintaining a cohesive, combat ready, army contingency response force,” Brown said.

Strengthening interoperability, the 173rd AB worked seamlessly with the 37th AS and 86th AW air and ground assets to further enhance their training and mission capabilities.

“As the primary C-130J Super Hercules aircraft lift asset in Germany and Italy, the 37th AS and the 173rd Airborne maintain a strong working relationship in support of fixed wing air support,” Brown said. “Our professional and personal relationships bolster the combat readiness of the 173rd A U.S. Army paratrooper assigned to the 1st Squadron (Airborne), 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, assigned to Grafenwoehr Training Area, tightens the straps of a parachute for another soldier during a buddy-check at Ramstein Air Base, Jan. 20. Once the paratroopers arrived at Ramstein they immediately initiated mission planning, joint rehearsals and the airload process with Airmen assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron and the 86th Logistical Readiness Squadron.

allowing us to provide a critical capability as Europe and Africa’s emergency responders.”

The 173rd Airborne Brigade and their joint partners in the 37th AS routinely conduct deployment readiness exercises from both Germany and Italy into numerous drop zones in Europe. Exercises like this set the foundation for expanding the joint capability to deploy both Airborne and Stryker capabilities anywhere in support of EUCOM, AFRICOM and U.S. Central Command priorities.

“We provide a ready-now option that is tailorable and scalable to commanders at echelon in the EUCOM, CENTCOM and AFRICOM through execution of rapid, nonotice deployment in support of non-standard mission sets,” Brown said.

During the training exercise, approximately 130 paratroopers, additional personnel, numerous vehicles, containers and supply pallets deployed from Grafenwoehr to Ramstein Air Base within hours of notification.

“During Airborne operations, we hone our paratroopers’ proficiencies and competencies to ensure our paratroopers can conduct their jobs and meet the commander’s intent,” said U.S Army Capt. Dean Purpura, 1-91 Cavalry air operations and training officer.

Once the paratroopers arrived at Ramstein they immediately initiated mission planning, joint rehearsals and the air-load process with 37th AS loadmasters to prepare for their follow-on mission.

Capping off the exercise, 1-91 Cavalry conducted static-line jumps back into Grafenwoehr Training Area from a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft while being supported by 37th AS pilots and loadmasters.

“This mission is more than just an Airborne operation,” Brown said. “It is a truly joint and multifunction endeavor, and relies on a great number of organizations all seamlessly working together. This is why we must practice these missions under multiple conditions, and often.”

86 VRS slams brakes on wait times

Story and photos by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron implemented a new innovative brake testing system that saves time and ensures the safety of military and local national vehicles.

“The primary goal of our new brake testing system is to provide a means to show that we have safe braking systems on all of our vehicles before they leave the shop,” said Senior Airman Jacob Croushore, 86th VRS vehicle mechanic. “This new test allows us to do that in an efficient way and we get vehicles back to their units more quickly.”

Prior to acquiring the new brake testing system, it took approximately 30 minutes to test the brakes for one vehicle. The new system allows the 86th VRS

to run a full brake diagnostic in less than five minutes.

“We used to have to drive all the vehicles to another location on Ramstein to test their brakes, sometimes delaying our task, but now we can stay in our shop,” said Challil Kessler, 86th VRS shop supervisor. “Our mechanics are more productive when we have the necessary tools available to them in house.”

With the extra time saved from this new innovation, Airmen are able to inspect more vehicles and complete additional tasks, ultimately allowing for shorter waiting periods for their customers.

“We’re allotted a certain amount of money each year for tools and equipment, so we requested funds for the new brake testing system, because we knew it would greatly benefit our shop and every squadron at

Ramstein,” Croushore said.

The new system allows 86th VRS mechanics to test the shocks, wheel alignment; front, rear, and parking brakes of each vehicle, all in less than five minutes.

“This new system saves us about 25 minutes per vehicle, which reduces our labor overall, saving us around seven manhours per week, 25 man-hours per month, and 300 man-hours annually,” Croushore said.

The new brake testing system is widely used throughout the Kaiserslautern Military Community. All of the 86th VRS mechanics are trained on how to properly use the system as well as understand the diagnostics readings, which allows the 86th VRS to place Airmen in any auto shop, without having to retrain them on a multitude of tasks and equipment.

by Staff Sgt. Kirby Turbak 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Out of the nearly 3,000 service members who arrived at Ramstein Air Base, in 2020, more than 450 members and their families have not enrolled in the TRICARE Overseas Program.

Checking off this simple administrative task can save time and money in the long run.

While members must perform a mini-registration for COVID19 testing, this does not automatically enroll members with the facility. To prevent delays and unnecessary costs for medical treatment, all service members and their families must intentionally enroll in the TRICARE Overseas Program within 90 days of arrival at Ramstein.

If members don’t enroll within 90 days of arrival, the command sponsored active-duty family member’s TRICARE Health Plan coverage will default to TRICARE Select Overseas (TOP Select), which involves cost shares and payment of annual outpatient deductibles.

TOP Select is an option for eligible non-active duty service members living overseas. TOP Select works like the stateside

TRICARE Select program with similar benefits, requirements and costs. TOP Select beneficiaries will have access to care on a “space available” basis in Ramstein’s Medical Clinic.

For those wanting to enroll in TOP Prime, there are two ways: in-person and virtually. To reduce foot traffic within the facility, virtual is the preferred option.

In-person: Beneficiaries can go to the clinic and enroll in person. Take a copy of your Command Sponsorship orders and a completed enrollment form.

Virtually: Send an encrypted email with a copy of your Command Sponsorship orders and the enrollment forms to the following inbox: usaf. ramstein.86-mdg.list.mdss-tricare-enrollments-all@mail.mil.

Update on influenza vaccinations, COVID testing for pre-travel

by Col. (Dr.) Ryan Mihata 86th Medical Group Commander Thanks to everyone who came to get their influenza vaccine last week! We immunized more than 6,000 people from across the KMC. It was a huge success, and we thank our Landstuhl Regional Medical Center teammates for their collaboration. There will be other (smaller venue) opportunities in the coming weeks if you still need to get your influenza shot; stay tuned for an announcement.

The good news is that levels of influenza in our area remain exceedingly low. According to the European CDC, across Europe only one out of about 900 surveillance samples was positive for influenza.

On the COVID front, numbers in Kaiserslautern are trend-

ing downward, although still high between 95-117 cases per 100,000 population. As most of you know, Germany extended its lockdown restrictions to the middle of February with increased requirements for specific mask wear in certain areas.

New DOD and CDC guidance is directing increased COVID testing related to travel. Commercial airlines now require a negative COVID test within 72 hours for commercial travel to the United States. To attempt to meet some of this requirement, the 86th Medical Group started pre-travel testing for official travel and emergency leave only. The testing is from

7:30-10 a.m. Monday-Friday at the Ramstein Enlisted Club. This is on a walk-in basis, and can be accomplished in less than an hour to provide you documentation for the airline. It is intended for Air Force personnel assigned to Air Force installations in the KMC, including uniformed members, civilians and dependents who are traveling for official purposes or for emergency leave. Any other travel must be worked through commercial locations on the economy. Guidance is changing rapidly. Stay aware by checking the Ramstein COVID webpage and social media accounts.

Lastly, we are out of our first shipment of COVID vaccines.

This shipment was primarily for first responders and frontline personnel. We have ordered the next shipment, but we do not

expect that to arrive for at least a couple weeks. Starting Feb. 1, we will be giving the second dose to the people who were immunized with the first shipment. As a reminder, the second shot should be given around 28 days after the first. Our local partners off base have been aggressively vaccinating,

as well. Approximately 1.5 million Germans have received at least one dose of vaccine. Sadly, in the United States the number of deaths rose to more than 410,000, which is more American deaths than our country experienced in World War II. I hope you all stay safe and healthy.

Physical therapy: Run, walk, run again

Story and photos by Senior Airman Jennifer Gonzales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In all my life, I never thought I’d need physical therapy. Sure, I struggled with some aspects of exercising. Not everyone’s built the same. Despite that, I was still surprised when my shins and back decided to give out on me during a regular physical training session.

Imagine burning-hot jagged lines shooting vertically through your shins, coupled with an ache that feels as if a bubble is bursting inside your spine. Then that bubble causes crackling pain to travel through your hips and halfway down your thighs.

Welcome to my world. The elements of the earth, metaphorically speaking, struck me all at once. I didn’t tell anyone this happened. Why? I figured no one would believe me or I was just trying to get out of exercising. Physical problems beyond broken bones aren’t exactly easy to prove. As a result, I continued on as normally as I could. My lower back ached with a burning pain whenever I walked too long, and even more so when I ran. My shins felt as if they were bowing each time my foot landed on the ground while running. Even the gentlest

press of my finger against them resulted in pain.

After two months, I finally couldn’t take it anymore, so I made an appointment with my primary care provider. I told him everything that happened and how long it had been going on.

After an examination, he told me I may have had a stress fracture.

An X-ray confirmed I didn’t, so the more likely culprit of my pain was shin splints, which also may have had something to do with my back pain.

Thus, I was referred to physical therapy. The first two appointments were virtual because of COVID-19, both of which my provider and I spoke about what kind of pain I was having and which exercises I could do at home to try and alleviate it. For my shins, I was told not to run or participate in any exercises involving jumping. For my back, I was instructed to avoid sit-ups and to do a few specific stretches to get my back muscles more flexible.

At first, each stretch hurt more than I care to admit and my range of motion wasn't very far. I couldn’t even do ‘good mornings’ correctly. On top of that, watching my peers run during physical training left me with a sense of longing. I wanted to get better, ‘get back on the horse,’ so to speak,

but I knew it would take time.

Within a couple of weeks, though, I noticed the pain eased up a bit. Stretching felt better and I believed my flexibility was improving.

About a month into doing as instructed, I went for an in-clinic visit. My legs hurt less so I figured it was time to try running again, yet I was still feeling some pain in my back. After some chiropractic stretches from the physical therapist, it was concluded that my back muscles as well as my hamstrings, were incredibly tight. I was given the option to do foam rolling and hamstring stretches. Foam rolling felt a little strange at first, but the more I did it, the better it felt.

There were days when I wanted to give up. Even though I was feeling improvement, it wasn’t fast enough and it’s not fun feeling like the weak link. However, I learned patience is key. I kept telling myself everyone is built differently and to have patience with myself.

All of that brings us to now.

Physical therapy has helped me tremendously and I encourage anyone who may be having difficulties to reach out to your PCM. Personally, I wish I’d done it sooner. I’m continuing to improve and I hope to be back in tip-top shape within the next few weeks.

Airlifter of the Week: Money matters Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Money is important.

This makes managing the finance office of one the biggest Air Force bases outside the United States even more important, but somebody has to do it.

Tech. Sgt. Carl Wheaton is that somebody.

“I treat every customer as if I have that problem that they’re having,” Wheaton said.

Wheaton, recent Airlifter of the Week, takes every challenge his job throws at him in stride.

As the non-commissioned officer of customer service at the 86th Comptroller Squadron, Wheaton takes care of any and all financial issues, whether it’s separation or retirement payments, temporary duty travel pay or debts.

Wheaton earned an accounting degree prior to entering military finance, but admits that education comes second to doing tasks hands-on.

“I feel like a [degree] just lets someone know that I can pay attention to something for four years,” Wheaton said. “But as far as knowledge goes it comes with experience and doing the same thing repetitively.”

Wheaton isn’t only handling spreadsheets, as customer service can make managing finance even more difficult. Wheaton notes that

presenting good service to the largest population of Americans outside the U.S. and geographically separated units throughout Europe can be demanding at times.

“It can be overwhelming, especially when you take pride in your job,” Wheaton said. “I get satisfaction from knowing that I helped a customer, no matter how simple or complicated the problem is.”

In February 2020, Wheaton was assigned to his first deployment in Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. He was tasked with filling a senior non-commissioned officer position where he became a resource advisor managing budgets, handling cash and contract payments.

“It was completely different from customer service and more budgeting than accounting,” Wheaton said. “It was managing millions of dollars versus managing customers.”

COVID-19 added a new layer of challenge for Wheaton as the closure of borders and businesses made it difficult to fulfill his mission. Wheaton and his colleagues were able to prevail with new protocols mandating face coverings, hand sanitizers and gloves.

“We just kept pushing and [talked] with different local nationals out there,” Wheaton said. “We tried to understand the language and make as many transactions as we could while also promoting being an ambassador for the Air Force.”

Wheaton's dedication was rewarded, as his leadership guided his deployed team to winning Team of the Month twice at their deployed location.

Wheaton’s work would not go unrecognized at home either. On Jan. 14, he was recognized as Airlifter of the Week, an award recognizing outstanding Airmen across the 86th Airlift Wing.

Wheaton has educated about 1,200 newcomers during a total of 42 in-processing briefs since his arrival in September 2019. He has processed military travel entitlements that led to a disbursement of roughly $3 million overall payments for 6,100 customers.

Money isn’t the only important matter in Wheaton’s job, as he also values being a good role model for his subordinates.

“My Airmen are looking up to me and knowing that the future is going to be in their hands, I have to set that example,” Wheaton said.

“If I slack, they’ll slack.”

The guidance and mentorship has paid off, with Wheaton leading his team to earning two Senior Airman Below-the-Zone promotions and 11 quarterly or annual awards at the Wing level or higher.

Overall, the title of Airlifter of the Week only inspires Wheaton to aim higher at his job.

“It makes me want to [try] even harder,” Wheaton said. “People are noticing me, what else can I do?”

Air Force to allow longer braids, ponytails, bangs for women

by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs As an outcome of the 101st Air Force uniform board, Air Force women will be able to wear their hair in up to two braids or a single ponytail with bulk not exceeding the width of the head and length not extending below a horizontal line running between the top of each sleeve inseam at the under arm through the shoulder blades. In addition, women’s bangs may now touch their eyebrows, but not cover their eyes.

These new changes will be effective upon publication of the new standards in Air Force Instruction 36-2903 in February.

“As I outlined in Action Order A: Airmen, this decision is a commitment to supporting the Airmen We Need and sustaining the culture and environment of excellence that will continue to make the Air Force an attractive career choice for Airmen and families,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. “I’m thankful for the feedback and research conducted from a number of women leaders, the Women’s Initiative Team, the Air Force uniform board, and our joint teammates.”

The Air Force uniform board convened virtually in November 2020 to discuss ideas sourced from Airmen across the Air Force who participated in a dress and appearance crowdsourcing campaign. Participants on the board included 19 diverse Airmen of various ranks from across the major commands and headquarters directorates.

The board reviewed all ideas including a recommendation from the Air Force’s Women’s Initiative Team. Thousands of women across the Air Force provided feedback to the Women’s Initiative Team, stating constraints to hair grooming standards resulted in damage to hair, migraines and in some cases, hair loss. “In addition to the health concerns we have for our Airmen, not all women have the same hair type, and our hair standards should reflect our diverse force,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “I am pleased we could make this important change for our women service members.”

In addition to addressing issues associated with personal health and hair loss, adjusting female hair standards supports ongoing efforts to address diversity and inclusion in the ranks. Earlier this year and in her role leading the Defense Department’s Diversity Board, then-Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett played a prominent role in supporting

these types of adjustments to ensure a more inclusive culture in the services.

The Air Force chief of staff approved the policy after considering feedback from the force, the uniform board recommendation, and the professional image and standards of the Air Force and U.S. military.

“We remain committed to removing barriers to service,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “In an all-volunteer force, we want fully qualified volunteers who are representative of the nation to see us as a great opportunity to maximize their talent and serve.”

Members must adhere to current occupational safety, fire and health guidance, and

mishap prevention procedures emphasizing when and how to mitigate the potential for injury from hair of varying lengths around machinery, equipment, power transmission apparatus or moving parts. Airmen are encouraged to reach out to their safety office for assistance in analyzing any potential hazards, as applicable.

Another idea considered by the board related to beard wear for men. Unlike with women’s hair standards, there are no known health or hair loss issues associated with current male grooming standard compliance.

As such, the Air Force plans to continue under the current male grooming standards without adjustments. 569 USFPS: Practice like you play

In the past, they used blank rounds or participated in simulators known as Milo Range Training Systems, but leadership for the 569th USFPS felt it was time for a change.

“Recently, my commander wanted to give the unit more realistic training, which means more trigger time,” said Master Sgt. Nakoma Pratt, 569th USFPS training section chief. “We took out one of our simulator options and incorporated the 300 meter [shooting] range.”

The live ammunition training is designed to build the unit’s proficiency and muscle memory. It gives them a sense of how their bodies may react in different scenarios downrange.

“We can always play a video game and see how to take down a threat, but you don’t know how you react or what mechanics you’re lacking until you use an actual weapon,” Pratt said.

Using live ammo provides a more realistic experience than shooting blank rounds, and it allows personnel to witness bullets hitting their intended targets.

“With the blanks, you can hear the (weapon fire) and feel the trigger pull, but you don’t know if you

actually landed the round on target,” Pratt explained. “(Live rounds) actually give them a sight picture.”

The training started with a small workout for the team to elevate their heart rates. This simulated the stress they may experience during real-world situations.

“We have them do pre-physical training to get their heart rates pumping, so they know their mechanics and when they should or should not pull the trigger while neutralizing a threat,” Pratt said.

The live-fire training initiative will provide over 400 defenders the opportunity for additional live-fire training and promoting weapon utilization, efficiency and familiarization.

The effort directly contributes to the development of more ready, lethal defenders to execute dangerous missions downrange and defend U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s “Global Gateway,” as well as the Air Force’s most prominent air power projection platform.

Project inclusion town halls to help develop culture of diversity, respect

Italian local national employees from the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s Logistics Readiness Center Italy prepare a shipment in support of the Humanitarian Assistance Program. The 405th AFSB hosted a virtual town hall Jan. 22 with the intent of improving diversity, equity and inclusion, and eliminating all forms of discrimination and harassment across the command.

Several hundred members of the 405th AFSB from across Europe took part in the virtual town hall Jan. 22. The primary focus of the town hall was local national employee inclusion. Every other month the brigade will conduct a project inclusion town hall on another area of concern.

The idea is to develop a culture at the 405th AFSB where we are all looked at as one team, said Col. Brad Bane, 405th AFSB commander. Whether a local national, a contractor, an Army civilian or a Soldier – the entire team needs to be aligned in order to support the mission.

“When you’re able to communicate, and you’re able to share ideas, and you’re able to treat each other like valued members – what you get is a diverse organization that’s able to get the job done regardless of the circumstances,” Bane said.

Prior to the town hall in small group settings, personnel from across the 405th AFSB brainstormed ideas and provided several areas to focus on. They are

local national inclusion, gender inclusion, communications, local national professional development and mentorship, military and Army civilian professional development and mentorship, sexual harassment and assault prevention, and equal opportunity.

The brigade will target each one of these areas every other month, said Larry Torres, director of operations, 405th AFSB. Working groups and town halls will continue throughout the year as the brigade makes improvements and becomes an even better organization.

The small groups identified several areas of concern regarding local national inclusion during their discussions, such as not including local national employees in the problem solving and decision making processes; not acknowledging the value of local national subject matter expertise and experience; not acknowledging local national employees as equal members of the organization and more.

Craig Shields, the director of the Logistics Readiness Center Stuttgart, 405th AFSB, brought up awards panels and the importance of recognizing the local national workforce for their efforts supporting the brigade’s missions.

“I can say that an awards panel does work. That’s what we do here. We have an awards panel that includes our works council so that it’s fair and maintains transparency,” said Shields, who believes

communicating with local national employees and emphasizing how well they are doing is extremely important.

“When I saw the comments that came out of my local sensing session, it hit me in the gut,” said Keli‘i Bright, the director of the Logistics Readiness Center Italy, 405th AFSB. “A lot of it has to do with perception, and a lot of that can be fixed by increased communications with our workforce,” Bright said. “It all goes back to what you are trying to address at the enterprise level. That’s leadership’s job – to standardize, to codify and to institutionalize.”

“I acknowledge we’ve got some work to do,” Bright added.

A wealth of information – to include questions, concerns and ideas to help improve the organization — came out of the small group discussions and the first town hall. Many people actively participated and provided valuable input.

And what comes next is change.

“Hold us accountable for implementing change, implementing processes to get after this so that we don’t continue to replicate what’s being perceived,” said Jody Fasko, deputy to the commander, 405th AFSB. “That was really the idea of those peer groups,” said Fasko, “to hold us accountable and keep progress moving forward so that employees at all levels feel heard, see change and make a difference.”

The next project inclusion town hall for the 405th AFSB is scheduled for March and will be focused on gender inclusion.

During the ceremony, Sgt. Maj. Adam Bezanson, Chief Culinary Management SGM, USAREUR-AF, presented the U.S. Army Europelevel Philip A. Connelly Award trophy to Weeks, and other Titans Team members, from 55th Quartermaster Company, 16th Special Troops Battalion.

“Events, like the Philip A. Connelly or the Food Service Discipline program, are very important for us in our MOS,” said Weeks. “And in the Army,

because it’s always the same thing every day, competitions like this set those people apart.”

Established in 1968, the Connelly program aims to recognize excellence in Army food service and is named for the late Philip A. Connelly, former president of the International Food Service Executives Association. The program seeks to improve Army food service personnel’s professionalism to provide the best product and service to military members and provide recognition for the excellence of Army kitchen staff in dining facilities and during field kitchen operations.

The Mobile Kitchen Trailer field feeding team will compete for the 2021 Department of the Army level Connelly Award as one of the six finalists in March.

by Russell Toof Regional Health Command Europe Since winning the 2020 Regional Health Command Europe Best Medic competition back in November, Sgt. Michael Metcalf and Spc. Walter Galdamez from U.S. Army Medical Department ActivityBavaria have been hard at work training for the Army competition.

The 2021 Command Sgt. Maj. Jack L. Clark Jr. U.S. Army Best Medic Competition will be conducted at Fort Gordon, Georgia, Jan. 25-29. On Jan. 22, the competitors and cadre will enter restricted area access for the competition duration and will have been screened for COVID-19 by the time the competition starts.

“I’m proud to have both Sgt. Metcalf and Spc. Galdamez represent RHCE at the U.S. Army’s

Best Medic Competition,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Kyle Brunell, the RHCE command sergeant major. “They’re highly trained, super fit, and extremely motivated and I think they have a great chance to win.”

Even in a COVID environment, maintaining readiness is a top Army priority.

“It’s important to keep training to remain ready for combat,” said Brunell. “We can and must do it safely and realistically. We owe it to our Soldiers and to those we serve to be ready and able to save lives in combat.”

The Army’s Best Medic Competition is held every year.

The two-Soldier team competition challenges the Army's best medical personnel in a demanding, continuous, and realistic simulated operational environment. The teams compete to be named as the most technically competent, physically and mentally tough medic team in the United States Army.

“The RHCE competition showed me that working as a team is essential to achieving success,” said Galdamez.

“Sgt. Metcalf and I relied on working off of each other to perform as best as possible. The RHCE competition also

taught me that I did not want to let my teammate down.”

Metcalf also spoke positively about his experience back in November.

“I learned a lot about mental toughness,” said Metcalf.

“My eyes were opened to the amount of technical skills needed to perform the tasks at hand.

Knowing the Army expects us to be mission capable at any moment, it is my job to foster the skills to perform life-saving capabilities whether medic or non-medic. The RHCE competition made me realize that and how I needed to start the preparation to represent RHCE at the Army-level competition.”

Training over the last several months for Metcalf and Galdamez included sharpening their combat medical skills, weapons familiarization, combat water survival, land navigation courses, and room clearing.

“These guys have put in ridiculous amounts of hard work, time, and dedication to prepare for this competition,” said Sgt. Nicole Price, an operations noncommissioned officer for MEDDAC Bavaria. “I had the privilege of training these gentlemen and I know they will represent our command well.”

In late 2018, Operation GRIT was implemented across U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa bases.

It replaced facilitator-led training for a more hands-on approach from frontline supervisors and commanders to enable more meaningful conversations in small group discussions using Check 6 topics.

“We remain steadfast in our dedication to build for our Airmen a culture of professional warriors who strive to do right, carry out the mission, and understand they are a valued and integral part of the team,” said Wesley Yancey, USAFE – AFAFRICA Community Support Program manager. “We continue to focus on the essential character traits we want our culture and climate to be comprised of.”

In previous years, topics were released a few days prior to the month they were intended to support. This year, Operation GRIT developed a toolkit to provide all 12 Check 6 topics at one time, allowing leadership at all levels to tailor the topics more effectively to their individual work centers.

Check 6 topics focus on different aspects to promote self-awareness, improve focus and effectiveness, strengthen personal motivation, and deepen relationships with Wingmen and family.

“The goal of the toolkit is to equip leadership with powerful and proven resources needed to engage Airmen at all levels through meaningful, strategically-curated discussions that focus on the protective factors of connection, personal performance and a shared sense of purpose,” said Yancey.

According to the toolkit pamphlet, the 2021 Operation

GRIT toolkit is USAFE-AFAFRICA’s holistic approach to further develop resilience and reinforce the protective factors that help the community deal more effectively with stressful situations and environments.

“The toolkit allows chaplains and religious affairs Airmen — the unit’s religious support team — to focus on topics that command, wing, and squadron leadership feel are most critical to being a ‘Wingman, Leader, and Warrior,’ and an American Airman,” said Col. Trent Davis, USAFE-AFAFRICA command chaplain. “Operation GRIT focuses on the heart of the Warrior and offers opportunities for the religious support team to speak on spiritual resilience topics that are core ingredients to America’s Airmen.”

The monthly discussions also satisfy annual training requirements of Suicide Prevention for Airmen who have completed the foundational Wingman Intervention Training. For those who haven’t, the training is still offered.

In addition to the Check 6 topics, the toolkit includes a communication plan to facilitate a focused synchronized message each month on various social media platforms.

“When we think about the actual tradeoff for just a small cost of our time, we’re building and reinforcing the culture we want here in USAFE – AFAFRICA, which is people taking care of themselves and each other,” said Yancey. “Ask questions, learn and grow. We’re stronger together, it’s the USAFEAFAFRICA way!”

Indispensable Army volunteers flex to needs during pandemic

The Army now has a new way for volunteers to manage their hours

Story and screenshot by Keith Pannell USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Volunteers are an indispensable asset in an overseas military community, even during the pandemic, according to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz volunteer organizers.

Now, tracking volunteer hours has been made simpler thanks to a new website championed by the garrison’s FMWR team.

“All of the garrison organizations are on there, along with the volunteer opportunities within the organization,” said Tim Siebeneck, USAG RheinlandPfalz Army Community Service volunteer coordinator. “All volunteers should use this website if they are volunteering within an Army organization. It gives

protections like workman’s compensatory protection.

“The volunteers are treated like they’re Army employees in that regard,” he added.

Volunteers using the previous system should have received instructions on how to manually claim and transfer data between sites from their organization point of contact or Soldier Family Readiness Support assistant.

Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to create an account at armyfamilywebportal. com. With an account, community members can research and apply for open listings within the garrison footprint.

Additionally, the free webbased tool serves as a transcript of volunteer services, allowing volunteers to easily track hours and activity through official record.

If a volunteer already has an AFWP account, nothing needs to be done. After logging into the modernized Volunteer Management Information System for the first time, the volunteer will be asked to fill out extra profile information.

The pandemic has not lessened the need for volunteers, according to Siebeneck.

“There have been less events, but more need for personallevel assistance,” he said.

As some types of volunteering efforts, Siebeneck cites the Family Readiness Group and other social activities like checking in with unit family members or teleworking co-workers.

“Pre-COVID, we may have needed more volunteers for things like MWR trips and outdoor recreation,” said Ryan

Bloom, who volunteers to run the Army Family Web Portal website for the garrison. “Now, current COVID restrictions mean we need more post office and Red Cross volunteers for the intense influx of mail and extra support families need. Opportunities have simply moved to other groups or changed in format.

People should broaden or rethink their search.”

Siebeneck said creating a new account will track volunteer hours, and show Army leadership where a lack of services exists.

“If you’re doing something very impactful, AFWP is a way ‘Big Army’ can account for your action and maybe resource it in the future so there’s actually staff,” Siebeneck said. “So,

once you move away, there’s actually a continuation of the program.”

Bloom reflected on the many hours he spends as a volunteer and what those hours add to garrison mission effectiveness.

“Volunteering allows me to continue learning and networking,” said Bloom. “I also love to be involved with others and help our community to function well.

I’ve always liked being part of an organization, and Tim and others at ACS are wonderful to work with.”

Virtual learning survival guide:

12 essential tips

Parents never dreamed they would spend 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the role of teacher, counselor, tutor, nurse, and coach — in addition to mom/ dad. Teachers could have never imagined trying to connect with students on a meaningful level in two dimensions.

Let’s face it, virtual learning is tough on all of us. These tips may help: 1. Establish Rules. Consider posting your virtual learning rules where everyone can see them. Better yet: have your student write the rules and decorate the poster. These can be as simple as: • “Dressed and in my spot by 8:00.”

• “Use kind words.”

• “Offer help to someone who needs it.”

• “Try first, then ask for help.”

2. Relationships are critical.

Research shows that children are more likely to cooperate and follow rules and routines if they feel supported and cared for by parents/teachers. If tensions are high, take

a break, take a breath, give a hug, step away and allow your child to share what they are feeling.

Ownership of the workspace. Give your student a special spot in the house for school. Even if space is tight, you can designate a corner of the kitchen table as a “school desk”. Let your student decorate their workspace with some stickers or removable decals.

Take frequent movement breaks. Every time there is a break on the screen, give your child something to do that is screen-free. Jumping jacks. Dance party. Hang upside down. Walk backwards around the house.

Yoga. “Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes.”

Hydrate! Make sure your student has a water bottle. Sports bottles with built-in straws are great, because using a straw can help improve concentration. Crazy straws are also fun and helpful!

Routines and Schedules.

Even if your child’s schedule is available online, consider printing it or writing it out it in a more simple, linear manner. Picture cues are helpful for younger students (e.g. story, writing, snack, etc.)

and checklists work well with older students (e.g. 5 math problems, break, science lesson, etc.).

7. Posture is Paramount. The ideal sitting posture has the hips, knees, and ankles at a 90 degree angle, both feet flat on the floor and the table at elbow height. If little legs don’t reach the floor, use a plastic storage bin or ottoman to allow for stable support.

8. Fidgeting is “A-O-K.” As long as your student is paying attention to the virtual lesson, allow them to do so in a non-traditional manner.

For example, sitting on a balance cushion or therapy ball, standing, holding a fidget toy, rolling their feet on a rolling pin or pressing a bungee cord that is attached to the chair legs. Moving and fidgeting actually improves concentration and listening skills for most students.

9. Encourage a Growth Mindset. It is so easy to feel frustrated and children are definitely feeling more anxious during these times. The word “yet” is very powerful.

“I can’t do multiplication” can be transformed to “I have not mastered multiplication yet” or “I can ask my teacher for extra help with multiplication.”

10. Focus on strengths. Find at least one positive thing your child contributed to a lesson each day and let them know you saw that positive behavior.

For example, “I like how brave you were to ask for help with that math problem” or “You used kind words with your friend when they were feeling sad.”

11. Give your eyes a break!

School-based occupational therapist Arlene Labeste says, “A good rule of thumb is for every 20 minutes of screen time, take a 2-5 minute break.” Try a movement break.

Look away from the screen at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds – look outside as far into the distance as you can.

12. Don’t be afraid to ask for modifications.

Teachers

are experts on “differentiated learning.” If your child is not able to do a task like their peers, ask the teacher for an alternative. For example, if your preschooler cannot yet hold scissors, the teacher may suggest other pre-scissor activities, such as using big kitchen tongs to pick up play-dough pieces.

Most importantly… give yourself a break! You are all doing great! Hats off to parents, teachers, counselors, therapists and especially...students!

Can’t-miss German day trips A-Z: Xtra Special Winter Outdoors Edition

by MilitaryinGermany.com Whether you love winter or simply endure it until spring arrives, one thing is true: getting outside and active is important for your health during the long, dark months.

Fortunately, there is no shortage of excellent outdoor opportunities in Germany. Even during the COVID era — when most closeto-home ski resorts are closed — you still have a ton of options for seeing the wintry world in a whole new way.

Here is a short list of Xtra special winter outdoor activities that are perfect for winter-brightening day trips: 6 ways to get warmer and (mostly) healthier Strap on snowshoes If you’ve never been snowshoeing, you don’t know what you’re missing. Snowshoeing is awesome. When you walk across the top of the snow, rather than plunging into it, it feels like you’re flying. As a bonus, snowshoeing is for everyone – children and first-timers included.

There’s no long, painful learning curve like there is with downhill skiing or snowboarding.

If you don’t have snowshoes, check with your local Outdoor Recreation about rentals. Then find a snowy patch of nearby wilderness, and get out there!

Go cross-country Cross-country skiing is the ultimate winter workout. It is also an incredibly beautiful way to experience the winter wilderness.

Germany has a plentiful amount of terrain that is ideal for cross-country skiing, much of it located near U.S. military bases/posts. While cross-country skiing does take a bit of getting used to if you’ve never tried it, the payoff is worth it.

Put on hiking boots Germany is perhaps the ideal spot for winter hiking. You’ve got loads of forests and clearly marked trails. You have pines and tranquility. You have world-class winter hiking destinations such as the Palatinate Forest, the Black Forest, the Hessen Spessart Nature Park, and more. If the snow isn’t heavy — or even with an absence of snow — hiking is an excellent way to feel like you can make winter yours.

Find a snowy hill Sledding! If you were a veteran sledder as a child, then you know what to do. If you were raised somewhere where snow never showed, then you’re in for a treat. Sledding is simple, and so much fun. You need a sled, a snowy hill, a modicum of common sense, and a sense of adventure. Push off, fly down the hill, and warm yourself up by hustling back up the hill. Repeat until you

are the good sort of exhausted.

Plan next year’s ski/snowboard trip.

Reality check: one of the best parts of Germany in winter is the ability to ski the Alps (or the Vosges, or Bulgaria, or…). For the moment, that door is closed. But COVID won’t last forever. Do your homework now. Find that amazing ski resort in Austria, France, Slovenia, Italy, Germany, or… wherever. Join your local German ski club, which usually helps you find amazing deals and meet new people. When things open back up, you’ll be ready to secure the winter trip of a lifetime.

Eat warm, eat well Treat yourself after a long day of enjoying the winter weather. Think hot chocolate, coffee, chili, cookies, etc. Everything tastes better when you’ve earned it!

Getting out there During ordinary times, all of Germany can be your oyster during the winter season. Nowadays, however, make sure you pay attention to travel and movement restrictions as you’re planning your trip.

For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies when it comes to travel.
