“This is my favorite commander’s call of the year,” August said.

This was the first time the 52nd FW sent Airmen to a forward-operating location in support of ACE. Although maintainers and crew chiefs are known for the launch and recovery of jets, there is a lot more work that goes on behind the scenes.

“2020 has already presented so many incredible opportunities for all of us to exercise our abilities as United States Air Force Airmen,” August said. “It’s an honor to lead an organization like the ‘World’s Best Wing,’ for as long as the chief and I have had the opportunity to do so. We look forward to seeing you all doing these amazing things.”

During their trip to Lajes, August and Rendon met with key personnel at several base facilities and received hands-on demonstrations of the installation’s mission capabilities. They were able to engage with Airmen and recognize the hard work they put in every day.

“This is the one time the chief and I get an opportunity to talk to all of you and say, ‘This is what you do that leads to the bigger mission: the mission of the base, the mission of the wing, the mission of the command, and the air power options we offer to the United States Air Force.’”

The all-calls allowed August and Rendon to discuss professional airlift operations and the capabilities Ramstein and its geographically separated units provide based on their strategic locations.

“Just about any mission that needs to be done happens either at, through or with the support of the 86th Airlift Wing,” Rendon said.

“It’s Airmen like you, experts in everything you do, that enable us to provide professional airlift support here at the ‘Gateway to the World.’

GSUs – including Lajes, which is one of the largest platforms we’ve got in the middle of the Atlantic – create the North Atlantic Air Bridge, giving us the ability to flow 30-day surge operations without fuel resupply.”

Leadership also detailed the need and benefit of joint and coalition partner engagement.

“A huge thing for the 52nd LRS is the planning and executing portion,” said Airman 1st Class Kyle Babauta, 52nd LRS logistics planner.

Days before the exercise, the squadron’s Installation Deployment Readiness Cell received tasks and requirements. After IDRC Airmen notified personnel and cargo tasked to participate in the exercise, the 52nd LRS provided transportation to Ramstein.

“The goal of the 52nd LRS during ACE is to ensure the deployment arm of the wing is able to deploy

passengers and cargo at a moment’s notice to increase survivability,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jason Martin, 52nd LRS IDRC superintendent.

52nd LRS Airmen also refueled the F-16 Fighting Falcons while they were at Ramstein AB. The squadron’s work directly supports Spangdahlem’s mission.

“ACE is one of the top priorities for the wing,” Martin said. “It’s vital that the 52nd LRS not only participates in the exercise, but leads ACE’s deployment functions from start to finish.”

Col. David Epperson, 52nd FW commander, has three priorities: the strike mission, ACE, and integrated base defense. ACE ensures

Tucker participated in an Agile Combat Employment exercise to ensure wing readiness and deter aggressors. A small team of 52nd Fighter Wing Airmen shipped cargo, loaded munitions, and refueled F-16 Fighting Falcons while participating in the exercise.

U.S. Air Forces in Europe are ready to protect and defend allies at a moment’s notice. One of the main goals of ACE is to deter adversaries by spreading out, making the political risk calculus too complex.

Past ACE exercises conducted by the 52nd FW took place at Spangdahlem Air Base, but the wing plans to exercise at other forwarddeployed locations in the future.

ACE operations require advance planning to make the mission happen.

“Logistics is one of the most important functions in any deployment operation,” Martin said.

“Precise planning from beginning to end starts with the IDRC.”

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class William H. Pitsenbarger was a pararescueman (also known as a PJ) medic who personally saved over 60 men. During a rescue mission on April 11, 1966, he was offered the chance to escape on the last helicopter out of a combat zone heavily under fire, but he stayed behind to save and defend the lives of fellow soldiers assigned to the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division, before making the ultimate sacrifice in one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Thirty-two years later, respected Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman (Sebastien Stan) on a career fast-track is tasked with investigating a Congressional Medal of Honor request for Pitsenbarger made by his best friend and PJ partner on the mission (William Hurt) and his parents

GROSTENQUIN, FRANCE  Before C-130 pilots can even fathom the idea of touching down in an austere environment, the ground must be tested. Prior to this, the landing zone must be secure and cleared of any hostile intent.

From Jan. 14-17, Defenders put their knowledge to the test with some help from the 1st Combat Communications Squadron with their coinciding exercises, Frozen Defender and Heavy Rain.

Defenders Pave the Way A Defender without a field training exercise is like a sword without a grindstone; the blade dulls and becomes ineffective. Frozen Defender served to sharpen the security forces Airmen’s responsiveness.

“Frozen Defender is our annual validation event,” said U.S. Air Force Capt.

Squadron director of operations and Frozen Defender lead planner. “For anything we’ve scheduled in our annual training plan, we have to come here and validate our ability to execute it. We also come to places like Grostenquin, France, so we can ensure we are able to complete our primary mission: open airfields.”

These Defenders — whose parents walked to school, uphill, in freezing weather — finally have a comeback: “Have you rucked in that climate with 80+ pounds on your back?”

“We try to work in different environments, mainly harsh ones, because there’s a look toward arctic operations,” Thrasher added. “We’re trying to make sure we are ready if we’re asked to go. Secondly, we want to make sure we can execute our mission any day, anytime, anywhere. Being able to work in rain, snow, sleet or hail makes the sunny days in the summer even easier.”

Exercise planners injected a myriad of scenarios to prove the unit’s capabilities. It

Overgrown foliage was the only sign of life, covering dilapidated buildings with rusted doors and shattered windows. When troops stepped off the bus, the exercise commenced.

“As soon as they landed, we took all of their vehicles and extra equipment, gave them the bare-bone essentials, then said, ‘dismount to your objective rally point,’” Thrasher said.

Approximately 40 Defenders threw their bags on their shoulders and traversed the grounds in formation to their bed-down area, while providing security along the way to ensure a safe arrival.

From that point, the Airmen confirmed the location for operations, seized the airfield, and slowly made their way to the main operating base with all their equipment. As the Defenders swept the airfield, they were confronted with opposition forces.

“Opposition forces are the simulated enemy while we’re out here,” Thrasher

said. “We try to make sure we have subject matter experts as OPFOR. We were able to task the 86th Security Forces Squadron from Ramstein; some really high-speed cops were able to come out here to test us to make sure we’re doing things the right way.”

To enhance the realism of the exercise, the 435th SFS and OPFOR used blank rounds. The sounds of which reverberated across the airfield. Some of these blank rounds found their way into friendly territory. Simulated “friendly” casualties tested the Defenders’ abilities to respond quickly and neutralize threats. They used portable litters to carry ‘downed Airmen’ and performed self-aid and buddy care as needed. One Defender even had to apply a tourniquet to his leg in the contested area.

“One thing we really pride ourselves on is we’re always willing to push the limits and think outside the box,” Thrasher said. “We use the resources we’re given to come out to an austere environment and test ourselves against some harsh adversaries to sharpen

With the Defenders sharp and at the ready, the rest of the 435th Contingency Response Group can focus on their primary mission knowing they’re in safe hands.

“The main objective is to solidify ourselves within the CRG to make sure we are worldwide deployable within the 72-hour timeframe it takes to open a base and assess an airfield so aircraft can land in any environment,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Baca, 435th SFS Ground Combat Readiness Training Center instructor and Frozen Defender mission planner.

Opening airfields anywhere in the European area of responsibility is the 435th CRG’s bread and butter. It allows for a strategic advantage by giving the U.S. Air Force the ability to perform air operations no matter the climate or location. Whether it’s U.S. sister services, NATO allies, or partners, this allows Airmen to directly support troops on the ground. This capability could not be possible, however, without the security

forces component of the 435th CRG. “It’s important for us, as security forces members and being part of the CRG, to do these exercises to validate that we are able to do these things in a real-world situation,” Baca said.

Combat Communications Rain Down Electronic Warfare While Defenders performed operations in the field, the 1st CBCS was nearby providing an added obstacle as part of their coinciding exercise, Heavy Rain.

“We’re helping with Frozen Defender by coordinating with the missions they want to accomplish,” said Staff Sgt. Matthew Oravec, 1st CBCS cyber defense technician. “There are certain times they want to try to operate in a contested communications environment. We’re working as an intermediary for them during the scenarios they want training for, and we provide the interference.”

Blocking the Defenders’ ability to communicate is an atypical tactic, but one that is

important to be ready for.

“Because of advances in technology of our adversaries, we need to consider we might be a target of something like that too,” Oravec said. “Recently, it has become a real threat for ground communications in the kind of missions we support.”

Exercise Heavy Rain allows the combat communications technicians to practice detecting and combating spectrum interference.

“Spectrum interference is when your signal becomes degraded because someone else is transmitting on that same frequency at a higher power,” said Master Sgt. Britton Hanson, 1st CBCS flexible communications package flight chief and Heavy Rain team lead. “By being able to identify that, if we deploy in support of a real-world mission and that happens, it’ll allow us to get our computer network back online faster, which then can result in the proper people thwarting the interference altogether.”

Understanding how to detect interference is crucial to mission effectiveness, Oravec said. Adversaries can both block means of communication, and leak false information into their communication channels.

“This exercise is important because no one in tactical communications deals with electronic warfare on a regular basis,” Oravec added. “This is going to set groundwork for all the different units that deal with tactical communications to detect and counter when they’re being interfered.”

Frozen Defender and Heavy Rain allowed Defenders and Combat Communications Airmen to discuss ways to improve future exercises and strengthen the joint effort.

“Hopefully in the future, we can incorporate the rest of the CRG,” Thrasher said.

“We really want to make sure if communications go out, we can combat things like interference with some of our brothers that we don’t always work with, and then re-integrate properly to make sure we can complete the mission.”

86 OSS Airman shines in the night

It’s the end of the work week, and the building gradually empties. The busy, fluctuating noise of the workplace is replaced by the steady hum of computers and monitors, only to be broken by the occasional report over a two-way radio. One Airman enters the building, coming out of the darkness and into the fluorescent-lit hallway. He greets the leaving personnel with smiling eyes and a mustache-lined grin. His joyful spirit and ambitious nature do not seem typical of a night-shift worker.

“He finds humor and positivity in just

about anything,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Catrell Wilson, 86th Operations Support Squadron airfield manager. “I’ve never seen someone, as a Senior Airman, that just looks at a position or looks at a situation on the airfield so dynamically.”

The Senior Airman walks up to one of the few remaining Airmen sitting at a desk, who eagerly enquires, “Shift change?” The day-shift service member’s hopeful look is met with an assuring nod and he proceeds to brief the recently-arrived night-shift lead on the day’s events.

The two switch places, and the 86th OSS mission continues.

A Dallas, Texas native, Hadnot is known for conducting himself in a state of readiness to respond to and fulfill any airfield requests that come to the 86th OSS, Wilson said.

When U.S. Vice President Mike Pence visited Ramstein in October 2019, Hadnot’s efforts were integral to a seamless foundation for the after-duty-hours arrival of the aircraft.

“We immediately started doing our checklists,” Hadnot said. “My counterpart assisted me with making sure all services were taken care of prior to him landing, and making sure that a ramp freeze was in effect whenever he landed, so there were no issues and he could get on the ground safely.”

Hadnot also provided flight planning and coordination of airfield space for the E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System aircraft assigned to the 116th Air Control Wing, Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, during the unit’s temporary deployment here.

“When they first came here they did not have any way to file their flight plans, so we provided any help that we could for them to get their own process set up,” Hadnot said.

“Whether it be flight plans, delaying their flight plan, canceling it, things of that nature, we’ve been assisting them from behind the scenes, so they can get their mission done.”

In-depth airfield knowledge is another way Hadnot supports operations. When the Defense Threat Reduction Agency came to evaluate Ramstein’s airfield security and safety, Hadnot was a key point-person.

He provided a 2-hour airfield tour, preresearched scenarios and a detailed assessment to DTRA for their evaluation, Wilson said.

Service before self is one of the many

qualities Hadnot exemplifies, and it is not limited to his support of airfield operations. He also makes efforts to build unit camaraderie by stepping up to lead functions such as the squadron’s Halloween event.

“Halloween is my favorite holiday because it’s the one time of the year people can change who they want to be, and kids can go out and have some care-free fun without anything really crazy going on,” Hadnot said. “I thought maybe we could have a haunted house for the kids and give them a safe environment to go trick-or-treating.

Each section in the building, including the fire department, provided their own theme for the event, and we provided food and refreshment for the families, so parents didn’t have to pay for dinner.”

The consideration Hadnot shows for his fellow Airmen, and the relentless hard work he puts in every day, or in his case, night, help drive the Ramstein mission forward.

The mission doesn’t sleep, and because of Airmen like Evan Hadnot, neither does the “World’s Best Wing.”

“We host Soldiers from all of our outlying clinics (including Army clinics in Italy and Belgium). We have (service members) who are forward-deployed to Afghanistan, (and) Kuwait, and they come over so they can maintain their EMT certifications.”

Combat medics are Soldiers with basic emergency medical technician training, enabling them to provide basic life support functions and trauma care. Although these Soldiers do attend an intensive 16-week training program following basic training, the MEDIC program introduces latest best practices to Soldiers. New procedures and modalities, such as using ketamine versus morphine for acute pain, and injectable medicines to aid blood clotting on the battlefield, require medics to familiarize themselves with to modernize developments in combat medicine.

“The training included specialists coming in to teach extra (patient care practices) we don’t actually learn in (Advanced Individual Training),” said U.S. Army Spc. Jessie Despirito, a combat medic with 1st Infantry Division Forward, and native of West Pelzer, South Carolina. “The training introduced us to orthopedic techniques and physical therapy (among other medical specialties), and since musculoskeletal injuries is the top injury in the Army, it was great.”

Despirito is one of many medics who travel to LRMC for the training while

deployed, with the program open to not only whoever requires the training, but even those who want to improve their battlefield medicine capabilities.

“We welcome anybody that wants to come in and get the knowledge,” said Williams, a native of Springfield, Vermont. “It’s a higher level of EMT training, because if I go down (as a casualty) I hope there’s someone who has this training to provide aid.”

The program’s culminating event, a combat scenario where simulated casualties are assessed, treated and evacuated, further tests participants’ ability to operate under pressure, stress and in austere environments.

“First of all, it was very informative, but unlike other classes I’ve done we could actually get hands-on,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Timothy Grier, also a combat medic with 1ID (FWD), and native of Wichita, Kansas.

“The fact that we could get hands-on training and then (do) the actual combat casualty assessment, they put a lot of effort into intensifying the training with (environmental stressors).”

The 1st Infantry Division Forward, currently based out of Poznan, Poland, is just one of the units priming combat medics by utilizing the monthly training as they conduct military operations overseas.

“As medics, we just don’t get trained (to this degree) during initial training,” said Grier. “But, you know, the more hands on the better (training).”

Got VAT?

U.S. service members and their families stationed in Germany or on temporary duty orders in the country are granted tax-relief as they are covered by the Status of Forces Agreement.

The SOFA is a set of entitlements and responsibilities which govern how U.S. service members live and function as a military community in the host nation of Germany.

Value-Added Tax, or VAT, relief is authorized under the SOFA. It is similar to a sales tax in the U.S. There are different rates for different products which range from seven to 19 percent and is added into the price. In order to participate, a U.S. service member must establish an account at their local VAT office by filling out a registration form. After the process is complete, the individuals are granted tax-relief by

purchasing VAT forms.

“German vendors normally collect the VAT and pass it on to the German fiscal authorities,” said Ardenne Hackett, 86th Force Support Squadron VAT office manager. “Then the German government uses that money just like the U.S. uses sales tax.”

The German government uses VAT tax to support education, healthcare, transportation, public assistance, pensions, recreation and environmental projects. It is important to note the following: • VAT is not related to customs • Vendors are not required to accept VAT forms • Individuals should ask the vendor if they accept the VAT form prior to making a purchase • Purchases are tracked for tax evasion and violators will be sanctioned • Ask the local VAT Office before using VAT forms for real-estate related expenses

“VAT forms are official U.S. Government order documents that [the VAT offices] are authorized to issue to eligible participants,” said Hackett. “In turn, these documents permit the eligible customer to purchase certain items without the sales tax.”

There are two types of VAT forms. Normal Form-1 (NF-1) VAT forms are for purchases under €2500 and expires two years from the date of issue. Normal Form-2 (NF-2), are for purchases over €2500 and expire 90 days after the date of issue. Eligible individuals may be issued 10 NF-1’s, at a time. They will not receive new forms unless they turn in the used or expired VAT forms.

VAT forms are considered controlled documents, and are not transferrable; there are no exceptions to policy.

“If someone loses (a VAT form), a purchase order must be recorded and is counted as a violation for that particular household,” said Rafael Wunsch, U.S. Army Installation Management Command international operations manager.

When a storm is forecasted, the process of determining the road condition begins with the 86th Security Forces Squadron.

“The on-duty flight chief and all the mobile patrols are looking at the roads and assessing the conditions during inclement weather,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Christopher Torres, 86th SFS police services assistant. “They’re looking for snow accumulation, ice, visibility… anything that might make driving more dangerous. If they see certain criteria, we’ll call for a condition change.”

What do the Road Conditions mean?

Road Condition Green is the default: normal driving conditions and normal operations.

Road Condition Amber represents mild to severe conditions, alerting drivers to exercise more caution. During Amber, the roads may have reduced visibility of 65-164 feet, slush, several inches of packed snow, and black ice.

An elevation to Road Condition Red represents very hazardous conditions, with usually four to eight inches of snow, sheets of ice, snow drifts, and reduced road visibility to less than 65 feet. Red is typically accompanied by delayed reporting or early release, and likely a closure of all except mission essential activities.

Road Condition Black represents the most severe road conditions, and is initiated when driving is considered extremely hazardous to dangerous. Conditions that typically trigger a change to Black are snow accumulation of more than eight

inches, extreme sheets of ice, heavy snow drifts, and reduced road visibility to less than 50 feet.

Winter Safety It’s recommended that drivers winterize their vehicle in preparation for inclement weather.

Winterizing includes ensuring the fluids in your vehicle are topped off, using winter or all-season tires, and packing a winter survival emergency kit, according to U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Henrie Young, Occupational Safety section chief.

“We’ve all seen a car broken down on the side of the road here in Germany, with the occupants standing outside with their reflective vests on,” Young said. “Now imagine that happening when there’s snow on the ground and the temperature is dropping around you.”

Young recommends stocking a basic winter survival emergency kit with blankets, extra winter coats, gloves and hats, bottled water, snacks, a tow rope, and a flashlight.

Due to Germany’s various microclimates, it’s crucial that service members who live off-base stay alert for the conditions in their area.

“Keep in mind the road conditions apply only for on base,” Young said. “Check the weather in your area, it could be Amber where you live, but as you drive closer to base it could gradually get worse. Call your supervisor and report late is necessary.”

1. When the road condition is changed, service members and their families can check the Ramstein Air Base Facebook page cover photo (https://www.facebook.com/RamsteinOfficial/) for the most current conditions.

2. By downloading the Air Force Connect app, adding Ramstein Air Base as a favorite, and enabling notifications, members of the KMCC can also receive up-to-date alerts on changes in road conditions, or click on the Road Conditions button.

LRMC sleep expert stresses effects of shift work on sleep Seven hours of sleep a night is recommended for adults by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. While 24/7 operations in the Army make shift work a necessity, this also affects the body’s circadian rhythms which signal the body when one should feel alert or sleepy.

To help service members and leaders understand the effects of shift work on sleep, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Matthew Rodgers, officer in charge of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Sleep Disorders Center, gave a presentation to Soldiers with U.S. Army Signal Activity Kaiserslautern, 102nd Strategic Signal Battalion, at LRMC, Jan. 8. “(Shift work) is absolutely mission essential for us,” said Staff Sgt. Darrel Zirk, a multichannel transmission systems operator with USASA-K. “The training might help give leaders a little consideration with regard to shift workers’ sleep

schedules, because we’re always fine tuning our operations and trying to make it better for shift workers.”

USASA-K operates the largest Army-operated satellite communications facility outside the continental U.S., which provides internet services via satellite on five continents and across three oceans, making shift work vital to operations.

In 2018, the Army led the four military branches in sleep disorders among its members, averaging 15.9 percent of the total force being diagnosed with at least one sleep disorder (sleep apnea, insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders among others.), according to the Defense Department’s 2018 Health of the Force report. The report also states lack of sleep can impair cognitive function, decreasing performance and increasing the risk for injury and accidents. Insufficient sleep is also associated with a number of chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and depression.

and employing risk mitigation strategies such as napping before driving.

According to Rodgers, changing shift schedules to later times may increase the efficiency of shift workers in more than one aspect of their lives. On their days off, shift workers tend to go back to their normal sleep schedule, said Rodgers. Instead of shifting sleep schedules by 12 or nine hours (with current shift changes at 6 or 7 a.m.), it’s only shifting two to three hours (if changes occurred at the 11th hour), which may not be as impactful.

Although Zirk’s section doesn’t work night shifts, they do have to consider the uncommon schedules when planning training and operations for the unit.

“I think part of the main takeaway is what you should or shouldn’t be doing when you are off (shift),” said Zirk. “Making sure you set time away for distressing, using melatonin if you have to, just doing what you can to make it as painless as possible.”

The new Fun Park Kaiserslautern awaits you with over 3,000 square meters with a state-of-theart trampoline arena. The owner is Matt Beck who brought his American dream to the KMC: a family entertainment center at its finest.

He teamed up with partners in Landau who have been running BaseJump there since 2017. Matt and his managing director Marc Kuntz have spent most of last year prepping this gigantic hall which was once a storage building for construction materials for a local hardware store. As of December 2019, Einsiedlerhof is now home not only to trampolines and a ninja obstacle course, but also offers indoor baseball and softball, escape rooms and virtual reality —promising you maximum fun and action for all ages all day long.

The jump surface has over 80 trampolines for you to jump on by yourself or with your friends. You can shoot hoops and try to dunk on two baskets, put your reaction time and speed to the test and go against your buddy on the Reaction Tester or compete against your friends on the Battle Beam like an American gladiator and see who can stand the longest after being hit by joust poles. And if that’s not enough and you still need to be challenged, then check out Wipeout! It offers a mix of fun, action and sport, but you better make sure your timing is right, otherwise you’ll be wiped out. For those of you with more stamina, be sure to try out the ninja course with different obstacles lined up with various levels of difficulty demanding muscle strength and mental skills to make it to the end.

On top of all of this, there

is a secluded sports area with more than 500 square meters of artificial turf where you can play baseball and softball in batting cages. Baseball pro Zach Johnson is on site to teach and guide you. He also leads the Rheinland-Pfalz Baseball Academy with training camps.

Would you rather just use your mental skills instead of getting a full-body workout?

Then you must experience Virtual Reality: the 3D 360° vision lets you dive in, use a bow and arrow, overcome your fear of heights or make you more scared of them, fight monsters and zombies by yourself or play against each other in the arena team shooter. This is a whole new world!

Another option is one of the five escape rooms located above the arena. They offer exciting adventures and puzzles to solve as a team or as a competition. Beware, for some of the rooms, you must

be 18 years or older to play.

This entire place is not only great for a family outing, but is also ideal for birthday parties, corporate events, group get-togethers, school field trips and more.

By the way, there is a snack area with pizza and other convenience food, as well as non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. You’ll find room for up to 200 people to sit.

Jump time starts at the top of the hour with a maximum of 100 jumpers at a time. It’s best to reserve your slot online where you can also directly see what’s still available. A play area for toddlers will be opening soon, so your little ones have something to do while your big ones are jumping off the walls — which is literally possible at the FunPark.
