TACTICAL TRAINING from Page 1 The 435th Security Forces Squadron hosted and led a tactical leaders course at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 26 to March 1. The U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa course was designed for tactical leaders of NATO partner countries responsible for weapons security to train together in a simulated environment. The course focused on building the foundational knowledge and tactical competency to effectively secure military assets and amplify force protection. The United States, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, and Belgium sent 21 students to attend the course, which built valuable interpersonal relationships throughout the coalition “It’s essential for NATO to participate in this course because so many of them work together,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Christian Klima, 435th Security Force Squadron defender. “Having the members compare and contrast their standard operating procedure brings them all together.” The ability to integrate with partners at the tactical levels allows operators to better measure their skills and combine forces to have the greatest effect in any battlespace. “Members should be adaptive to their environments as well as their battlespace,” Klima continued. Throughout the scenario-based training, instructors prepared tailored operational environments to exercise classroom problems in a real-world environment. Each nation led a different problem set, which allowed command and control of the scenario to flow between nations while giving instructors the opportunity to evaluate their skills and effectiveness. “The most important part of this training is to see how NATO members’ different techniques and tactics work together,” said German air force Master Sgt. Björn Große, Büchel Air Base security forces platoon sergeant. “If tactics aren’t working, a plan is constructed to correct the issue and ensure future success and a better understanding.” Students received instruction on breaching capabilities, advanced gunfighter tactics, close-quarters battle training, and recapture recovery training. “Even though there are some differences in execution, NATO forces work with the same intentions,” said Große. “It is important for us to understand those differences and find a way to make it us all.” The 435th Security Forces Squadron will continue building advanced courses to benefit the NATO coalition effectiveness of combined security forces response teams.

In the revision, workplace access is restricted to vaccinated, recovered or tested employees. In light of the revised act, we want to remind our communities that testing capabilities at military treatment facilities are reserved for official purposes and individuals who present medical symptoms. Unit Leaders who have questions regarding the revised act should reference Force Health Protection Guidance (Supplement 23) which established COVID-19 screening

testing for unvaccinated individuals. ATTN: Those packing up and leaving the KMC Many members wait too long to begin the household goods moving process, thereby causing additional stress and delays. by Jim Garamone Department of Defense News In yet another sign of the world’s revulsion of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen told Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III that “in these troubled times, Finland stands ready to work together with the United States.” During Pentagon meetings today, Kaikkonen and Austin looked at ways to deepen the already strong sense of cooperation between the two nations. Kaikkonen told Austin that Finland was shocked at Russia’s aggression toward Ukraine. NATO and the European Union in response to the Russian invasion. Austin, too, highlighted the need for more cooperation in light of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “war of choice” in Ukraine. The defense secretary expressed his admiration for the fight that Ukraine is making against the Russian invaders. “Their courage inspires all of us,” Austin said. “Now, all of us must, likewise, stand with Ukraine and stand up for the rules-based international system that we built together some 75 years ago. Your government’s decision to send assistance will certainly help the brave people of Ukraine, and I know that they’re grateful for it.” The U.S.-Finnish bilateral rela-

Mil-to-mil couples gain time to make separation decision after childbirth

Starting March 1, either parent of a Department of the Air Force military-to-military couple may now have up to 12 months to request separation from the service after the birth or adoption of a child. A military-to-military couple is defined as a DAF active duty member married to another DAF active duty member. Caregiver separation and childbirth separation give both parents more time to learn how to balance family and career, allowing them to continue to contribute to the DAF mission, before making a decision to separate. “As part of our ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts, this is a positive step we can take to allow new parents more time to decide how to balance their

careers with a new child,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel, and services. “It’s vital that we continue to find creative ways to develop and retain talented and skilled Airmen and Guardians.” Additionally, new parents are encouraged to use the MyVector online mentoring system to find mentors who can provide support and guidance as they navigate service and family. “This new family friendly policy recognizes the work-life balance our Guardians seek and provides greater opportunity for choice,” said Patricia Mulcahy, deputy chief of space operations for human capital. This initiative is in addition to pregnancy separation, which currently allows for voluntary separation for pregnancy before the birth of a child, and childbirth separation, which currently allows for voluntary separa-

tion for up to 12 months after the birth of a child. Other initiatives include new parental leave guidance authorized in the FY22 National Defense Authorization Act, which eliminates primary and secondary caregiver designations and provides for up to 12 weeks of leave for new parents. The Office of the Secretary of Defense and the services will implement that new policy within the coming year. In an effort to balance mission while taking care of Airmen and Guardians, only one spouse will have the opportunity to separate under either the pregnancy, childbirth, or caregiver

provisions. The other spouse may not separate under any of these provisions, but may qualify to voluntarily separate under hardship or any other reasons for voluntary separation under AFI 36-3208, Administrative Separation of Airmen and AFI 36-3207, Separating Commissioned Officers. Members may apply for caregiver separation under the “miscellaneous reason” provision already included in both officer and enlisted separation instructions, which apply to both Airmen and Guardians. The requests are evaluated based on individual merit and may be dis-

approved if it is determined that the separation is not in the best interest of the DAF. Members may apply as early as the day following childbirth or adoption, applications must be submitted no later than 12 months following birth or adoption, and the requested date of separation must not be more than 12 months from the application date. Waivers of active duty service commitments will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. For more information about personnel programs, visit https://mypers.af.mil/.

Fairchild refueling wing deploys Airmen, KC-135s to Germany

A KC-135 Stratotanker assigned to the 92nd Air Refueling Wing, Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, arrived at Spangdahlem Air Base, to augment existing U.S. forces in theater March 9. U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa are committed to standing side-by-side with NATO allies and partners to ensure the independence and security of Europe. Photos by Tech. Sgt. Anthony Plyler

by 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs Office FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. — Approximately 150 personnel from the 92nd Air Refueling Wing deployed four KC-135 Stratotankers to Spangdahlem Air Base. The aircraft arrived at Spangdahlem to augment existing U.S. forces in theater, improve readiness, enhance NATO’s collective defense posture, and further capabilities with allied and partner nations. The deployment is with the full cooperation of the German government. “We are always ready,” said Col. Cassius Bentley, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander. “Our Airmen and aircraft are always prepared, working hard to ensure that we are ready to support when called. This deployment proves we can provide rapid global mobility, reach, and power.” The 92nd Air Refueling Wing is the Air Force’s largest active duty air refueling wing, warranting the title “Super Tanker Wing.” Fairchild directly supports Air Mobility Command’s mission, providing global reach airpower and deploying expeditionary combat support forces in support of worldwide contingency requirements. “These are purely defensive

forces,” chief Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said. “These additional personnel are being positioned to respond obviously to the current security environment caused by Russia’s unpro-

voked invasion of Ukraine, and certainly to help reinforce and bolster deterrence and defense capabilities of the NATO alliance.” This deployment was conducted in full coordination with

host nations and NATO military authorities, and although temporary in nature, they are prudent measures to increase readiness and enhance NATOs collective defense during this

period of uncertainty. The 92nd ARW capability of aerial refueling enhances the Air Force’s ability to accomplish its mission of projecting the joint force with rapid global mobility.

Airmen assigned to the 726th Air Mobility Squadron, Spangdahlem Air Base, and the 92nd Air Refueling Wing, Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, unload cargo from a KC-135 Stratotanker at Spangdahlem AB, March 9. The support and basing of these forces is evidence of the strong commitment to NATO Allies and to a whole, free and peaceful Europe.

Soldier Spotlight: Sgt. Cortney Marie Carmona

Services:

Story and photo by Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 16th Sustainment Brigade Name: Sgt. Cortney Marie Carmona Job title: Religious Affairs Specialist Assigned: 16th Special Troops Battalion, Headquarters and Headquarters Company Location: Baumholder, DE Experience: 6 Years as a 56M Religious Affairs Specialist Hometown: Watseka, IL

Can you explain what you do and what you are responsible for at your unit? Some responsibilities that I have is we care for the soul of the Army, they say, just taking care of Soldiers, planning resiliency events, providing religious support wherever we can, whether that be in the field or in garrison or here at the unit, just planning events is a big part of it and caring for everybody and just ensuring that we’re following up with Soldiers, making sure they’re doing OK and planning events like suicide prevention, resiliency events, doing prayer, breakfast and then integrating with the staff regularly. Why is what you do in your unit important? I would say what we do is important to the unit and the mission because the Army as a whole would not be able to operate without a

unit ministry team. As Soldiers, we carry weapons; as a Unit Ministry Team, we carry the Soldiers. We care for the soul of the Army, which can often be overlooked. What do you enjoy about your job, and what motivates you? My favorite thing about what I do in my job would be that I get to be with Soldiers and their Family Members. Not a lot of jobs have the opportunity where they say, Hey, I’m going to work and just going around and talking to Soldiers. I enjoy caring for Soldiers and their Family Members and being able to do the resiliency events we do, having people just come by to talk, and being a part of their lives. Service Members smile knowing that they are taken care of. That is what keeps me motivated at the end of the day, every day, and I am glad to be a part of something like that.

Taking care of our canine heroes by Spc. Xuyang Zhao 21st Theater Sustainment Command

On March 13, 1942, the Army founded the K-9 Corps and began training a highly motivated force to serve among the brave men and women in defense of this nation. The anniversary of this occasion, today better known as K9 Veterans Day, commemorates the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history. “Military working dogs are incredibly important to the mission because they have senses that you can’t replicate with machines,” said Spc. Zoe Gillespie, animal care specialist with 64th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services Support), 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 30th Medical Brigade. Working dogs have been used by the U.S. Army dating as far back as WWI, where they served a crucial role in delivering messages between troops. Today, it is not uncommon to hear the heroic stories of military dogs such as Conan, who in 2019 helped to eliminate al-Baghdadi, then leader of the Islamic State; or Maiko, whose service in 2018 in Afghanistan saved the life of his handler and several other Army

Members of the Veterinary Medical Surgical Team training with Military Working Dog Blus and his handler Spc. Eric Kappel from the 18th Military Police Brigade in Vilseck, March 11. Pictured from the rear left: Spc. Zoe Gillespie, Maj. Shawn Thomas, Sgt. James Romer, Pvt. Jasmine Pennetta. Front from left: Cpl. Andrea Serrano, Spc. Eric Kappel and MWD Blus, and Spc. Rangers at the expense of his own life. “To sum it all up, it’s about loyalty,” said Sgt. James Romer, noncommissioned officer in charge of the Veterinary Medical Surgical Team. “If

o t n i h c r Ma Spring t n e d n e p e D ID Event

a handler gets injured and can’t go on, often the dog will not leave his or her side. A lot of the time, they might have to be sedated to be taken away from their handlers.”

Today’s incredibly motivated canine Soldiers hail from a long lineage of dogs who have served with unwavering dedication and loyalty.

For Maj. Shawn Thomas, veterinarian and officer in charge of the VMST, taking care of these working dogs is his top priority. On large-scale deployments, role 2 medical teams generally take care of working dogs on the front lines. “But when there are issues, then they’re going to need to refer them to higher levels of care — and that’s us,” said Thomas. In addition to providing higher levels of care for MWDs who are injured on duty, the 64th MDVSS also conducts routine training with dog handlers in garrison environments to ensure the best care is available. “We want to be there,” said Thomas. “We want to help them have a safe deployment, help them return to duty, and help them finish their career and have a good life.” Since April 2021, the 64th MDVSS has instructed several K-9 Tactical Casualty Combat Care courses to multiple allied NATO partners including Greece and Turkey to further a common understanding of how to best treat injured working dogs in real combat scenarios. This K-9 Veteran’s Day, supporters can adopt a retired service dog or give to their local animal shelters.

World traveler becomes Airlifter

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Brandan Wilson, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron flying crew chief program manager, grew up in Derby, Kan., and always wanted to join the Air Force. Wilson went to basic training almost 18 years ago. Since then, he has had many assignments, but only a couple stand out to him as favorites: Pápa Air Base, Hungary, and Ramstein Air Base. The mission at PAB is to build a multinational team capable of quickly responding to strategic airlift taskings. The integrated team

made up of service members from 12 nations focuses on all C-17 Globemaster aircraft missions: Airlift, air refueling and air drop. Wilson enjoyed working with other countries while stationed in Hungary. The base’s small size made it easy to see how each unit works together toward the mission. Being stationed at Ramstein allows Wilson to travel, and he has been to most of Europe for both work and vacation. Some of his favorite places to visit were Greece and Croatia because he could take boats out to different islands. While he has expressed his passion for travel both on-duty and off-duty, Wilson has never been anywhere in South America. He

said he would like to visit someday, regardless of if the mission takes him there or not. “I really like to do international traveling and the whole experience with different cultures and intermingling,” he said. “I was working with [service members from] other countries, and then we just became friends and our families started hanging out.” Aside from traveling, Wilson said he likes being stationed at Ramstein because of the mission to build Airmen, project power and support partners. “[At Ramstein], we’re a part of everything,” Wilson said. “It feels like we’re always on the front helping with COVID-19 supplies,

Wilson, who recently was awarded Airlifter of the Week, has managed and scheduled 57 contingency operation missions since January.

Operation Allies Welcome, and now Eastern Europe.” Wilson, who was recently selected as Airlifter of the Week, is an active member of the 86th Maintenance Group Agile Combat Employment/Multi-Capable Airman working group. His contributions to MCA include defining and developing the concept into the workings of aircraft maintenance. As a section chief, Wilson is instrumental to leading 21 maintenance Airmen for the 86 AMXS FCC program by scheduling them and managing their times and training. Since January, Wilson has managed and scheduled maintenance personnel in support of 57 contingency operation missions in Eastern Europe

for a total of 442 flight hours, movement of 697 personnel and approximately 608,000 pounds of cargo. Lt. Col. Kelly Collier, 86 AMXS commander, said Wilson is able to balance the schedules of his Airmen from ensuring they are fully trained and qualified to ensuring they are able to take leave and rest from being away often. “Wilson is one of the most adaptive Airmen I have ever had the privilege to work with,” Collier said. “Watching him interact with the FCCs and seeing how they work together to get the right person on the right mission at the right time and then watching all of that change when a new mission gets tasked is truly incredible.”

Her assignments following basic training at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois, included: Naval Base Ventura County, San Nicolas Island, California; and the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. While on the Roosevelt, she deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning the enlisted aviation warfare designation. Her duties included aircraft handler and aviation logistics. She also worked as a representative for the Roosevelt’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program, advocating for sailors who had experienced trauma resulting from sexual assault. In 2020, she returned to military service, receiving an Army commission in the California State Guard, serving in public affairs. In an interview by Justin Sloan for military.com, Marshall said: “For anyone who is on the fence about serving — life is 90percent attitude and 10percent circumstances. In the military, you will sometimes feel like it is 90percent circumstances and 10percent attitude. It’s not. Just keep your eye on the prize, take pride in what you do, work hard and you will be rewarded, whether while in the service or once you separate.” She added: “It sounds like a kindergarten saying, but I always like to say if something needs accomplished, vets can do it. Vets can do anything, so go out and do it.”

Soldiers celebrate Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps veteran’s 101st birthday

Annie Laura Bailey, one of the first women in Georgia to join the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943, poses for a photo with Spc. Dionna Smith, left, and Spc. Ahmyra Hollis, right, both Soldiers assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Statesboro, Georgia, Feb. 27. U.S. Army 3rd ID Soldiers celebrated Bailey as part of Women’s History Month, which recognizes the contributions women have made to the nation and the specific achievements they have made over the course of history.

Story and photo by Pfc. Elsi Delgado 50th Public Affairs Detachment Walking around during her lunch break, a bright, blue-eyed, 23-yearold Annie Laura Bailey stopped to look at the bright red, white and blue poster of a white haired and bearded

man with a tall hat pointing at her with the words, “I Want You,” written in red, insistent letters. The curly, styled, dark haired woman wanted to serve her country like her father did in World War I. So, in 1943, Bailey joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, the women’s branch of the U.S. Army

where about 150,000 served between 1942-1978. “I saw Uncle Sam in my daily life,” said Bailey. “It just felt like joining was the right thing to do.” At first, she was leery about joining, but was unable to get Uncle Sam out of her head and finally decided to join. “After that, I didn’t have time to think too much because all of a sudden I was in Daytona Beach, Florida, where the WAAC were building up,” she said. While stationed there, Bailey worked as a telephone signal opera-

tor for the WAAC. Bailey had already had familiarity with such systems from her civilian career as a telephone operator for Southern Bell Telephone Company. “I was just one of those women who knew how to work the telephone, so it came naturally to me,” she said with a warm smile. Seventy-eight years after joining WAAC, Bailey, now with white wispy hair, celebrated her 101st birthday on Feb. 27, in Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Statesboro, Georgia. To thank Bailey for her service, the contributions she made to the nation and her achievements in the

Army, several 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers attended the celebration. “She has paved the way for us as women to live our dreams and serve our country,” said Lt. Col. Lindsey Elder, the 3rd Infantry Division’s public affairs officer. “It’s an honor to represent the 3rd ID and the Army with you today.” Bailey was vibrant as she said she was thrilled and thankful for the new generation of Army women to have attended this huge milestone in her life. After opening her gifts, Bailey met and talked with two female Signal Corps Soldiers from the 3rd ID. Bailey shared her experience as a signal Soldier and gave some sage advice to the new generation of female Soldiers. “I really enjoyed meeting and conversing with Mrs. Bailey,” said Spc. Ahmrya Hollis, a Soldier assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 3rd ID. “Learning how the Army has transformed and grown was definitely an eye-opening experience.” Women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of the U.S. Army in countless recorded and unrecorded ways and Mrs. Bailey is among those women. “Communication and equipment that the U.S. Army Signal Corps creates and manages has changed over the years, but the commitment of Soldiers in any environment remains constant,” said Lt. Col. Danny Morrison, the officerin-charge of the division G-6. “I am incredibly proud that our 3rd ID Signal Soldiers had the honor to meet with one of our veterans about how far we have come as an Army.”

Six immediate health benefits you will see if you lose a little weight by Janet A. Aker Medical Health System Communications Did you know that dropping just 10 pounds of body weight takes 40 pounds of pressure off your knees? That’s equivalent to not carrying around a cinder block. Losing even a little weight now can have a major impact on your health and quality of life. This long list of benefits might help motivate you to adjust your habits to achieve a happier, healthier lifestyle. Reduce blood pressure Eating more nutritious foods and drinking more water can reduce high blood pressure, and its risk of stroke and heart attack. Nearly half of service members diagnosed as overweight or obese are also diagnosed with hypertension, Defense Health Agency data shows. Reduce joint and back pain Carrying less body weight will reduce stress on your entire body. DHA data shows that one in

five overweight service members reports lower back pain. Women’s health Obesity can also have significant consequences for women’s reproductive systems, including menstrual disorders, infertility, miscarriage, and poor pregnancy outcomes. If you plan to get pregnant, now’s the time to shed some weight. Better sleep The more weight you lose, the less likely you are to snore or have sleep apnea, where your breathing actually stops for short periods of time throughout the night. You might even get to stop using your C-PAP device. DHA data finds that 1 in 4 service members who are overweight share a diagnosis of sleep disorder like apnea and snoring. The result of better sleep? You’re less fatigued, have more energy, and a happier bedroom partner. Reduced risk of diabetes Another bonus of losing weight?

Your chances of developing prediabetes or full-blown type 2 diabetes drop significantly as your blood sugars drop. Mood improvements As you take more control of your weight, you may see a decrease in symptoms of depression and an improvement in self-image. Finally, you likely will reduce the anxiety that hovers over you knowing that you’re going to have to pass that fitness test.

How to start So get started. Talk to a nutritionist, dietitian, or physical trainer about getting your weight loss plan in place. In the long run, finding and sustaining a healthy weight lowers your risk of serious chronic diseases. Now’s the best time to start. Pro Tip 1: Drink more water What should be your first step and how quickly can that help you? The answer is as simple as

drinking more water. Drinking water throughout the day fills you up, lubricates your joints, improves your skin, eliminates toxins faster, and helps with digestion. No more acid reflux, also known as GERD, or eating handfuls of antacids like candy! Start carrying water with you at all times and sip it until you need a refill. Then do it all again. Making this one change can help with joint pain which comes with being overweight, as well as reducing arthritis symptoms. Pro Tip 2: Start small The best advice from nutritionists is to start small and then make more changes as your health improves. Start with a specific, measurable goal that is achievable within a short period of time. That will make it relevant to you. For example, try to lose 5 percent of your body weight, dropping 1 or 2 pounds a week. For a 230pound man, that’s about 11-1/2 pounds.

Edinburgh Castle

steeped in history, was the site of ancient bloody battles, and boasts some of the country’s best-loved architecture. There are plenty of reasons to visit Edinburgh! 1. Shopping City breaks are all about shopping, and that’s something Edinburgh does really well. Take a stroll down Princes Street to find high street stores and designer boutiques. You’ll pass the enchanting Princes Gardens that are overshadowed by the towering facade of Edinburgh Castle, giving you a great view while you browse. Don’t forget to stop by Jenners, a top department store that has delighted Scottish shoppers since it first opened in 1838. Nearby, Harvey Nichols has its one and only store in Scotland right on St. Andrew Square. It’s a great destination for upscale items and brand name clothing. If you’re more of a vintage shopper, the historic Grassmarket area is the place to go. You’ll find old and rare books for sale as well as vintage clothing and antique jewelry. 2. Attractions You might need more than a short break in Edinburgh to discover everything this city has to offer, so let’s give you a head start. The famous National Museum of Scotland is one of the world’s top 20 most visited galleries. It has over 20,000 artifacts to view, if you can tear yourself away from its life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex. Another popular choice is the National Museum of Flight where you can view all manner of aircraft from World War planes to a grounded Concorde. The interactive exhibitions are always a hit with kids. 3. Sport and Recreation Muirfield is the popular Edinburgh-

based golf course that has hosted 16 British Open tournaments, and is the location for the 2022 championship. It’s just as popular with visitors wanting to test their skills in the home of golf. Just outside Edinburgh, the Pentland Hills have the city’s only dry ski slope. They also boast some wonderful walking trails that let you escape the hectic inner city streets for a day in the country. If you’re a bit of a water-baby, the miles of idyllic beaches that surround Edinburgh are a great spot for scuba diving, sea kayaking and surfing. Taking your surfboard with you might be problematic, but you can always rent the gear you need. 4. Family Days Out Starting at Edinburgh Castle, which is always fascinating for families, you can take a stroll down the iconic Royal Mile for more family-friendly attractions. The Real Mary King’s Close is a little tricky to find (it’s tucked away down a back alley and hidden from view). But when you

do get there, you’ll find yourself exploring under the city in a maze of hidden tunnels. The Edinburgh Dungeon provides interactive entertainment and tales of adventure that might scare the socks off you. If you are looking for a gentler option, then head to the ever popular Edinburgh Zoo with its endless list of unique animals. 5. Discover Your Scottish Roots Do you have a little Scottish blood in you? You’d be surprised just how many people around the world have Scottish roots. If you think you might have or you’d just like to find out, Edinburgh has a wealth of information and is a great starting point on your genealogical adventure. The General Register Office of Scotland is situated right here and hold records of all the ‘hatches, matches and despatches’ (births, marriages and deaths) in Scotland. Over at New Register House you can buy a day ticket to access all the records held. Who will you discover

you’re related to — William Wallace or Robert Burns? You might be surprised. 6. Great Holiday Cottages in Edinburgh With so much on offer, Edinburgh also boasts an impressive number of holiday cottages that are perfect for your trip. You can enjoy inner-city apartments overlooking the water, have easy access to nightclubs and shopping areas as well as enjoy the eclectic selection of restaurants. Just outside the city, rural retreats for two, large lodges for families or groups, and beautifully appointed child-friendly holiday homes with luxury kitchens and outstanding views give you the freedom to explore Edinburgh in your own time. Flights to Edinburgh Travelers have the option to fly with one of the national airline companies such as Lufthansa, British Airways, KLM and Air France from the Frankfurt and Stuttgart International Airports.

Due to regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, bookings and trips may be cancelled or postponed, and travel to neighboring countries may not be allowed. Please verify the status before making plans to attend. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies.

2022 SkillsUSA European Championships by Ken Robinson SkillsUSA European Regional Lead AFCEA Chapter 158 hosted their fifth annual SkillsUSA European Regional Championship event. The competition took place over the course of four weeks. Students from six high schools were invited to participate in ten Career and Technical Education competitions. The majority of the contests were held virtually and ranged in length from four weeks (Engineering Design) to a one-day live showdown (Nursing Assistant Challenge), having most contests take place over a 2 ½ week period. SkillsUSA is the largest nonprofit national education association of its kind offering quality educational experiences for students in leadership, citizenship, and character development. Serving more than 400,000 members, SkillsUSA is committed to producing the most highly skilled workforce in the world through both education programs and competitions. AFCEA Chapter 158 supports the SkillsUSA vision by hosting the annual NY State Region VII (European) championships. Chapter 158 recruits local professionals to develop rigorous, industry relevant CTE challenges designed to help raise the level of workforce readiness and reduce the current skills gap. Additionally, it is AFCEA chapter 158 who provides all the funding and cash prizes for the event. Students from throughout central Germany who believe in their skills, believe in their future, and

see SkillsUSA as an opportunity to be recognized and rewarded for their talents, eagerly accepted this open invitation. Top winners for each contest received both medals and cash prizes. Below are the first-place winners from each of the ten CTE contests: • Advertising Design – Cali Adams and Amaree Barrier • Computer Programming – Michael Brenner • Engineering Design – John O’Leary and Roman Angular • Cybersecurity – Michael Brenner and Logan Malcolm • Photojournalism - Amarachi Okoroafor • Television Video Production – Marisela Cruz and Elijah Grifford • Video Game Design – Ethan Davis • Web Design – Kemka Okoroafor and Amarachi Okoroafor • Marketing – Annika Sabol and Isabel Mayuri • Nursing Assistant – Emilee Mullennix For more information about the 2022 SkillsUSA Regional Championships and to see the full list of contest finalists, please visit the AFCEA Chapter 158 website – https://kaiserslautern. afceachapters.org/SkillsUSA.
