COMMENTARY: Reflections from OAR

by Chaplain (Maj) Sarah Schechter Branch Chief, Plans and Programs 86th Airlift Wing Chaplain Operation Allies Refuge is the largest noncombatant evacuation operation in the history of the United States, and I am fortunate to say, “I was there.”

The Operation included 22 Religious Support Teams who provided 24/7 religious accommodation to our 35,000 guests and was nothing short of miraculous. It was a collaboration of joint military, German Police, embassies, the State Department, USAID, the USO, interpreters, volunteers, and big hearts of all kinds.

I am an Air Force Chaplain (Rabbi) and belonged to this once in a lifetime team. At the close

of daily leadership meetings, the officer in charge called on me for final thoughts. “And Chaplain, what do you have for us today?”

The turn of events had impacted my perspective on our presence in Afghanistan the last twenty years.

I experienced a range of emotions and prayed to God for insight.

It then occurred to me that this operation was our country adopting another people as its own, and how extraordinary that was.

That realization defined the rest of the operation for me and thus at the camp meeting I said, “Our Afghan guests are about to be adopted by our country to be our fellow American citizens. Our role at Ramstein is much like that of a foster family. What does a foster family do? It provides love, care,

stability, safety, nurturing, and shelter. We are the foster family, and our guests are on their way to becoming family. Our family!

And our fellow Americans.”

Months after that meeting, as the operation came to a close and last flights departed Ramstein with passengers smiling ear to ear, many a heart ached. Hearts ached at having to say farewell to children, whose little feet they clothed in socks and shoes.

Children with whom they played ball, taught English, and snuck candy into hands, just to bring a smile and make their difficult life more pleasant. Hearts were aching because in the bittersweet moment, they are now all gone off, we pray, to a brighter future.

The once teaming tent cities that

sprang up overnight are now empty, silently echoing the nonstop, problem-solving, rhythm of their life here. Now a ghost town. The Islamic call to prayer we played over loudspeaker to thousands, five times a day, for two months, is no longer needed.

Operation Allies Refuge, one of the most challenging and powerful experiences of our life, was a foster family. And with those last planes, many of us grieved like empty nesters.

I escorted the last Afghans leaving Ramstein and realized that I was there due to a decision I had made twenty years ago. I joined the military because of September 11th and by some uncanny coincidence, I was the last military member to say goodbye, on one of

the last flights to the United States.

For me, this closed that chapter of September 11th.

Former Chief Rabbi of England, Rabbi Sacks once said, “We are as great as the challenges we have the courage to undertake.”

This operation, and its various challenges, has been a courageous undertaking. We are providing the homeless with a home, the nationless with a nation. People who had no future, now have a future.

How is greatness achieved? To again quote Rabbi Sacks, “When we hand our values to the next generation and empower them to build a future.” Our newest American citizens are Our family and Our next generation. May God bless them, and may God bless America, through them.

On-base clothes dryer safety Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. But did you know how critical taking care of your clothes dryer is? With a few simple safety tips, you can help prevent dryer related issues.

There are two different types of dryers used on the installation, depending your location and type of home. Condensed water and vented dryers: 1. For condensed water dryers, ensure you empty the condensed water container after every drying cycle. Condensed water can cause health problems in people and animals. Please don’t drink it!

2. For vented dryers, check and clean the flexible hose connected to your dryer for lint accumulation at least once a month.

MORE SAFETY TIPS: »» Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer. »» Always use the lint filter. »» Clean clothes dryer lint trap after each use.

Never place plastic articles in the dryer. »» Keep the area around your dryer clear of clutter like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc. »» Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry first; then they can be washed and dried as usual. »» Check the outdoor flap on vented dryers to ensure it is not blocked or covered. »» Turn the dryer off if you leave your home or when you go to bed.

Ages: AD and dependents 16+ LRMC information As you may have heard, due to rising numbers of COVID-19 infections, Germany has revised the Infection Protection Act, which is applicable to U.S. Forces in Germany in accordance with Article 54 of the NATO-SOFA Supplementary Agreement. In the revision, workplace access is restricted to vaccinated, recovered or tested employees. In light of the revised act, we want to remind our communities that testing capabilities at military treatment facilities are reserved for official purposes and individuals who present medical symptoms.

Unit Leaders who have questions regarding the revised act should reference Force Health Protection Guidance (Supplement 23) which

established COVID-19 screening testing for unvaccinated individuals.

ATTN: Those packing up and leaving the KMC Many members wait too long to begin the household goods moving process, thereby causing additional stress and delays. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Personal Property Office advises movers to call them three weeks before moving to begin the booking process.

The Wing is always in need of volunteers The RAO is in need of more volunteers to help perform administrative duties. Your Retiree Activities Office has relocated to Building 2118, Room 138, on Ramstein Air Base. The RAO exists to support, unite, and enhance the lives of retired military and DoD civilians, veterans, family members, and active duty in our community through positive volunteerism. All retirees (regardless of service affiliation), surviving spouses, separated veterans, and service members preparing to retire can receive assistance and guidance from the RAO on numerous topics and concerns.

Staff members are appointed by the Director and perform administrative duties in the RAO. The office is now open Tue-Thu, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Registry of Motor Vehicles operating hours update The USAREUR-AF Registry of Motor Vehicles customer service desk located in building 216 on Sembach Kaserne is again open Fridays. Operating hours on Fridays are 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron The 86 VRS has established a base shuttle to support deployed/TDY individuals in support of current operations here in the KMC. The shuttle currently services work centers, QoL & lodging facilities on Ramstein Air Base, but has routes planned for lodging at both Kapaun and Landstuhl to be activated as required. Our simple QR code will take you to our current shuttle routes/times so we can remain flexible to changing requirements and keep the latest shuttle schedule posted for all customers. Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Emmeline James 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs It’s the early hours of the morning when the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System crew arrives to begin their day. They receive a quick briefing before the E-8C JSTARS aircraft is prepared for departure.

The JSTARS aircraft, deployed to Ramstein Air Base from the Georgia Air National Guard’s 116th Air Control Wing at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, provides an airborne battle management, command and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platform.

JSTARS are operated by Guardsmen from the 116 ACW, active duty Airmen from the 461 ACW, and U.S. Army Soldiers from the 138th Military Intelligence Company.

During their time in the U.S. European Command theater, the

unit is supporting training exercises and events demonstrating the U.S.’s steadfast commitment to NATO allies, enhancing interoperability with multinational partners, and deterring any actions that could destabilize regional security.

“We are here to support EUCOM operations in the area, including operations in support of deterring aggression within neighboring countries.” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Stephanie Bisagno, 10th Expeditionary Airborne Command and Control Squadron intel noncommissioned officer in charge.

The 10 EACCS squadron comprises 19 different Air Force Specialty Codes, all essential to the in-house maintenance, planning and intel parts of the mission.

“Everyone plays a role on every sortie,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Joseph Sullivan, 10 EACCS director of operations. “The mission is very dependent on people being compe-

tent and effective at their jobs.”

Sullivan added the Airmen and Soldiers, who fly during each mission, integrate ground commanders to ensure all members have the most up-to-date information necessary for mission success.

Using radar, communications, operations and control subsystems, the JSTARS crew can communicate real-time situational awareness of ground operations to the joint force and NATO partners and allies.

“As a C2ISR(command and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) platform, the E-8C is capable of wide area surveillance of targets on the ground,” explained U.S. Air Force Capt. Dale Warfield, 10 EACCS JSTARS mission planning chief. "Our Airmen and Soldiers are working hard to ensure that decision-makers — in the ground and on the air — have the information they need during any mission.”

TALK OF THE TOWN: Union Community Landstuhl

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages or towns surrounding Kaiserslautern and in the heart of the Palatinate Forest.

Talk of the Town is a series highlighting the union communities within the County of Kaiserslautern, the City of Kaiserslautern and the Union Community of Winnweiler in neighboring Donnersberg County. The series aims to inform American service members and their families about the communities they’re joining during their time in the KMC. A Union Community is an administrative territorial community composed of a group of individual towns or villages. Each month we will feature a different community and provide facts about its history, heritage, and the local experiences it offers.

The next stop in our series leads us to the Union Community of Landstuhl, located just south of Ramstein Air Base, and invite you to discover interesting facts about your home away from home.

Communities The union community is comprised of the individual towns of Bann, Hauptstuhl, Kindsbach, Krickenbach, Linden, Mittelbrunn, Oberarnbach, Queidersbach, Schopp, Stelzenberg and Trippstadt, as well as the City of Landstuhl.

During the course of a communal and administrative law reform, the union community was combined with former towns belonging to KaiserslauternSüd. It has been in its current form since Jul. 1, 2019, with the City of Landstuhl acting as the administrative center.

With a population of 28,000, about another 3,738 members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community (U.S. and NATO) reside in the union community.

The Mayor of the Union

Community, Dr. Peter Degenhardt, has been in office since 2013 and would like to extend a warm welcome (see box on page 7).

Celts, a castle and a medical center Early traces of a settlement date back to about 500 B.C. at the Heidenfels (heathen rock) and is attributed to a Celtic settlement.

It is said to have been a holy site until the Roman times in the first century. The king’s court of Nannenstuhl was first mentioned in conjunction with the king’s court of Lutera around the year 850 as part of the Lorscher Imperial Urban (document).

Around the year 1160 emperor Friedrich Barbarossa had Castle Nanstein built on a hill in the southern part of the town, first mentioned in a chronicle in 1253. The town “Landstuhl” was first documented as a city in an official certificate in 1326 and since 1995 it has officially held the title “Sickingenstadt Landstuhl,” in honor of the noble Sickingen family.

The Lords of Sickingen acquired responsibility in the late 15th century and their most famous member, Franz von Sickingen, transformed the castle into a fortress during his reign.

While large parts were destroyed, some sections still tower above the city as the most prominent landmark.

Since 1953 Landstuhl has also been home to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest U.S. medical center in Europe with a military housing area on the base as well.

Wanderlust, canyon hikes and a natural gas trail There is plenty for outdoor fans to do and discover in and around Landstuhl. Various hiking trails lead to and from Castle Nanstein on long or short routes. Discover historical traces at Steinberg or take a relaxing stroll in the wild and romantic Karlstalschlucht (Karl’s valley canyon) near Trippstadt. An educational natural gas trail will inspire you to learn about natural

resources and a walking trail from Queidersbach to Schweinstal lined with sculptures will lead you to the Picard quarry. Mountain bikers have nine trails to choose from and regular cyclists can discover the Palatinate Forest on a variety of trails.

The Cubo is a popular spot for wellness fans and offers a sauna with a spa area. The nature inspired sun and fun outdoor pool is ideal for children and is just adjacent. Nature lovers may also enjoy the Bärenlochweiher, a natural swimming lake in the forest, with a picnic area near Kindsbach.

Various sports clubs and associations offer a multitude of fitness activities for young and old. In addition to popular German soccer, other clubs offer table tennis, fishing or even events for tractor fans and meetings with working dogs.

Arts and culture Performing arts events are held at the Stadthalle in Landstuhl with musicals, concerts and plays.

The Sickingenmuseum in the Zehntenscheune offers a tour through the life and times of Franz von Sickingen, the most prominent Landstuhler of all times. It highlights the effects of his political and personal development onto the centuries to follow. There is also a separate department called “The Knight and his Era” with original letters and pictures.

Iron processing and a journey through time The Eisenhütten Museum in Trippstadt provides a glimpse into the world of forest, water and the iron industry closely connected to Trippstadt and neighboring Karlstal’s history of iron processing. It is situated within the “Schmiede Huber” complex under historic protection and iron processing demonstrations and courses can be booked.

The museum Sickinger Höhe was opened on the occasion of Queiderbach’s 1000th year anniversary. It is situated in an old school house and city hall built in 1836. The museum is about 500

Festivals and fun On May 7, the Sickingen Herolde parade through the

city in colorful, historic outfits with horns and drums in honor of Franz von Sickingen. The “Sickingenmarkt” takes place the end of April and the “Stadtfest” in September, with food and beverage booths and musical stages throughout the city. Each individual community has its own village fest in the summer months and festivities, such as the “Schnappsbrennerfest” in Mittelbrunn in July and the “Hahnenfest” in Bann in June, are well known even beyond the region.

An Airman from the 86th Airlift Wing plans and programs office was celebrated as Airlifter of the Week for his efforts in ensuring base readiness through communication and coordination.

Capt. Adam Olligschlager, 86 AW Plans and Programs action officer, is responsible for the outstanding organization and execution of the Secretary of Defense Dispersal Plan.

“Because of his performance, we achieved a 95 percent score during a SECDEF Office of Continuity Assessment,” said Bruce Bartholomew, chief of the 86 AW plans and programs office. “This ensures that the 86th Airlift Wing, the 521st Air Mobility Operations

Wing and United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa are prepared to receive, move, protect, lodge, feed and enable the President and Vice President of the United States, the SECDEF and other executive branch secretaries to continue their work uninterrupted upon arrival at Ramstein.”

As an action officer, Olligschlager communicates information sent down from USAFEAFAFRICA to all groups involved to ensure they’re aware of their responsibilities.

“We’re basically the middleman for the base,” said Olligschlager.

“We make sure that everyone gets what they need, both information and equipment, so that everything runs smoothly.”

Outside of his duties as an action officer, Olligschlager is also part of

the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron where he works as a flight nurse evaluator.

As an evaluator, he ensures that flight nurses remain clinically and operationally competent and are ready to execute their duties at a moment’s notice.

“Despite these demanding tasks and the time required to dedicate to them, Capt. Olligschlager was able to finish his Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration, graduating with honors,” said Bartholomew.

Olligschlager, a Howell, Michigan native, plans on staying in the Air Force for a full 20 years. He is leaving Ramstein soon to continue his journey at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, where he will become an instructor at the Aeromedical Evacuation Schoolhouse.

Reserve Soldiers at Baumholder log 4,000 volunteer hours during 9-month rotation

by Nicole Alberico U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Five Soldiers with the 455th Expeditionary Terminal Operations Element received the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal during a ceremony, March 9.

In addition to the service medal, Baumholder’s United Services Organizations presented the 455th with the Silver Mission Award for outstanding volunteer performance — the first time the Baumholder USO presented this award.

“Our goal was to fulfill our mission as perfect and best we could and support the community in which we are stationed,” said Maj. Jody Babineaux, element commander. “We have done both magnificently. I am proud of my unit.”

The 455th ETOE has a footprint in 15-18 different states but is based in Europe.

According to awards documentation, from June 15, 2021, to Feb. 9, the five Soldiers volunteered 4,000 hours in support of U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Family & Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs, USO missions and programs in the Baumholder and Kaiserslautern Military Communities.

Baumholder’s Military Personnel Division and

Installation Access Control System were two garrison offices on the receiving end of hundreds of the volunteer hours.

According to Babineaux, the Soldiers used their rapport with more than 30 agencies that have a nexus to in- and out-processing to ease backlogs during permanent change of station season heavy summer months.

They further assisted with passports, consular birth reports, Status of Forces Agreement cards and issuing new social security numbers.

“They assisted in the establishment of an appointment-based system that ensured Soldiers were in-processed within 24 hours of arrival into the DEERS/RAPIDS system,” said Babineaux. “That decreased the customer wait time by over 80 percent and increased the garrison’s Installation Access Control Service security services.”

The unit’s efforts did not go unnoticed by BMC Deputy Garrison Manager Jae Kim. “I’ve personally noticed them helping our garrison’s IACS/ DEERS/ID Card section operations, but their support didn’t end there,” said Kim. “This unit volunteerism has contributed significantly to the quality of life for the Baumholder Military Community under the resource strained operations during 2021-2022, due to the required COVID-19 mitigation measures to be implemented for all activities.”

When asked how his Soldiers found the time to log so many volunteer hours, Babineaux said, “When not on mission, I push my Soldiers to be active in the community. Back in the rear, I’m a schoolteacher and baseball coach in Laurel, Mississippi, and I do the same to my athletes. I look at the talent we have and put that talent in the best spot.”

Separating waste in Germany by the German-American Community Office Rules in Germany for separating waste may greatly differ from those in the United States. The German-American Community Office has put together a few guidelines for properly disposing glass in containers.

According to the Waste Management Administration of Kaiserslautern County, proper use of glass containers, intended for later recycling, is of great significance.

What goes in the glass containers?

Non-returnable glass bottles, jars and flasks — clean, without residue and without lids (lids belong in the yellow bag).

Usage rules: • Be considerate of local residents and pay attention to disposal times. MondaySaturday from 8 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm. Not on Sundays and public holidays.

• Separation of green, white and brown glass. Blue, red, yellow glass belongs to green glass.

• Glass container sites are no dumps Dumping any kind of waste constitutes illegal waste disposal, which can be punished with a fine.

LRMC nurse scientist earns elite designation

William Brown, chief for the Center for Nursing Science and Clinical Inquiry at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, was recently awarded the Army Medical Department’s 9A Proficiency Designator in recognition of his contributions to Army Medicine as a Nurse Practitioner.

The 9A designator is presented to select individuals who have demonstrated exceptional professional ability in the advancement of their specialty and is only awarded by the Army Surgeon General. To put into perspective, Brown is one of only 52 active duty Army nurses out of more than 3,000 to hold this designation.

More than a certificate of achievement or decoration to hang on a wall, the designation labels Brown as a national expert in his field, affording him the opportunity to become an associate professor at a college or a university.

Although the designator is the pinnacle of expertise for Army medical professionals, Brown doesn’t plan for greener pastures anytime soon.

“The one thing that’s cool about being a nurse scientist is you get to ask questions,” said Brown, whose passion includes mentoring junior officers and encouraging research to help field the next generation of problem solvers.

Army Maj. Albert Knight, a perioperative clinical nurse specialist at LRMC, recently coauthored a peer-reviewed article at LRMC

during Operation Allies Refuge and Operation Allies Welcome. “(Brown) leads by example and is always ready and available to assist me with reviewing evidence-based practice, while at the same time offering expert practice recommendations from a distinguished nurse scientist perspective.”

In a testament to his scientific contributions to the field, Brown was also recently recognized as a Fellow by the American Association for Nurse Practitioners. The title recognizes nurse practitioners “who have made outstanding contributions to health care through clinical practice, research, education or policy” according to the AANP website.

After leading LRMC’s CNSCI section for years, Brown secured several grants and authored numer-

ous scientific peer-reviewed papers in his quest for evidence-based best practices. His curiosity and grant-funded studies have directly impacted patient care across the medical community.

“If you have that curious, inquisitive mind, then research is perfect for you because it allows you to come up with a plan to potentially answer a why, which is profoundly gratifying and hopefully helps others in the process,” Brown said.

Army Lt. Col. Christopher Stucky, deputy chief of CNSCI and fellow 9A designator, says “(Brown) has mentored me and numerous others on scholarly writing, publishing, and research. It is great to partner with such an experienced and accomplished leader, and scientist.”

Brown and regards him as a natural mentor to others and strategic thinker in the research community.

Currently, Brown is the site principle investigator working on a multimillion dollar grant exploring the impact of yeast infection detection test kits which will give women control over their own health in austere environments.

When asked what he would like to tell the younger generation of Army nurses Brown says, “Most people don't know, LRMC is one of five research cells in the Army Nurse Corps or CSI Centers for Nursing Science and most people in the Army don't even know we exist, particularly junior officers. If you want to provide the best care, you have to provide the best evidence; to get the best evidence, you have to keep doing research.”

Sports heroes who served: Olympic gold medal winner, Soldier

by David Vergun Department of Defense News Army 1st Lt. Amber English is an American sport shooter who competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, setting a new Olympic record of hitting 56 of 60 targets and becoming the second woman in American history to ever win an Olympic skeet shooting gold medal. She contended for a spot on both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Teams but did not qualify for either. This motivated her to join the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit in Fort Benning, Georgia, in February 2017.

In 2018, she was part of a U.S. sweep at the World Championships, where she earned a bronze medal. In total, she now

has four world cup medals won in 2010, 2016, 2018 and 2019.

“I was very fortunate to put everything together at the right time,” she said, speaking of her gold medal win. “I trained very hard. The shooters that adapt faster are the ones who get better results. All I could control was my own shooting and emotions. It is always down to the last wire.”

English began shooting at the age of 6 and is a member of a distinguished shooting family.

Her father and uncle were U.S. Running Target National Team members and resident Olympic Training Center athletes, while her mother and aunt were members of one of America’s top collegiate rifle programs at the University of Kentucky.

shooting have been recreational activities for the entire English family.

She began competitive shooting in 2006 at age 17, competing in women’s skeet shooting matches. After progressing up the ranks of international skeet shooting, English moved to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to become a full-time resident athlete in 2013, where she competed in various domestic, international and world cup matches.

Besides shooting, the 32-yearold Colorado Springs-native has worked as a paramedic in various locations in her home state.

When she isn’t training for sport shooting, she enjoys hiking, fishing and hunting in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.

“This is really a Celtic burial mound.

Archaeologists found all those other things in the burial.” Beside the shroud are a collection of copper bowls and pots, an iron sword, and a glittery gold bracelet and ring.

“It says here he was a Celtic prince.”

She is reading the informational sign, which is in both English and German.

“That would explain all the special stuff, and his huge burial mound.”

We are deep inside that actual mound just outside the village of Rodenbach.

There are actually two burial mounds here and a ritual stone circle labeled as an ancient court. The largest of the mounds was excavated in 1874 and found to contain the remains of a Celtic man from before 400BC. Celts in Germany The Celts (Kelten in German) were a tribal people group that ranged throughout northern Europe in ancient times.

Though they saw themselves as unique clans; modern archaeologists use the word Celts to refer to their shared lifestyle, culture, and language group.

The earliest known unified Celtic culture is called the Hallstatt culture. It is named for the archaeology dig in Hallstatt, Austria, where the first iron age celtic site was unearthed. This culture group slowly brought the Iron Age to the rest of Europe over time between 1200 BCE to 450 BCE. There are various theories about where this cultural change began, but the power was centered in the area of eastern Austria along the Danube. Tribes of the Hallstatt period controlled trade from Greece into northern Europe and between the river systems including the Danube, Rhine, and Seine. The Kaiserslautern region would’ve been on the western edge of later influence.

Another local mound At another location near Rodenbach, there is a massive partially-reconstructed burial mound from the later Hallstatt time period. The excavation here in 1875 found iron sheets, bronze neck and arm rings, plus metal wagon bushings and wheel parts.

This grave is known as the Celtic Chariot Grave because of these findings. It is unique for the area, being so old and very large.

There are signboards (in German) describing the grave, the excavation, and the late Celtic Hallstatt period in Rheinland-Pfalz.

Being partially reconstructed is helpful to visualize the size of the mound from the interior.

A new Celtic culture The Celtic Hallstatt culture slowly evolved into what archaeologists call the La Tène culture. Again, this cultural time period is named for the location where its unique artwork was first excavated in northeastern French-speaking Switzerland.

The center of Celtic power shifted to Gaul: Eastern France and Western Germany. Kaiserslautern was near the heart of this influential region that centered on trade along the Rhine. Note that

the word Gaul was used by the Romans to refer to this people group in the same overarching way we use the word Celts.

La Tène Celtic culture slowly spread over much of Europe during the time from 450BCE to the Roman conquests around 1 BCE. This was the largest extent of Celtic culture – expanding into the far east of Romania and west into the British isles.

The Celtic prince in Rodenbach This is the time of our Celtic prince’s grave. There were Celtic settlements all over the Kaiserslautern area including two very large hilltop fortresses – in Donnersberg and Otzenhausen.

Eventually, the Celts would either be pushed out of Europe or absorbed by the Romans. Celtic culture made its final stand in Britain.

In the Prince’s Grave Mound my daughter has finished reading the info board.

“It’s a replica. The real items are at the Pfalz History Museum in Speyer,” she says.

“So, not a real dead body?” I ask.

“Nope,” she smiles.

The city of Rodenbach celebrated its 700 year anniversary in the year 2000 by reconstructing some of the Celtic sites in their area, including the Prince’s grave.

and the Chariot Grave Mound walking from Rodenbach pool, which is a good place to park. Note that the Prince’s grave is accessible all year, but the interior is only open from April-October. For an active day out, both can also be reached via the Barbarossa Cycle Trail.

Each class had a “Book Picnic” featuring guest readers from the fifth grade, and a book themed snack cart. There was a school-wide Mystery Author contest and everyone that guessed correctly won a free book. The whole staff got involved by sharing their favorite children’s books. It was a wonderful week for the entire school.

Treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan recruits street-smart Nathan Drake to help him recover a 500-year-old lost fortune amassed by explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
